Just finished reading Elle(s), a comic series by Aveline Stokart & Kid Toussant
Tumblr media
I’m struggling to find other people with OSDDID reviewing this, so I guess I’ll drop my 2¢ in.
There was a lot that felt really relatable in here — especially having an alter who goes completely quiet and shuts people out when conflict happens, and people you’re close to feeling confused and concerned by your completely different reactions to things. The art is gorgeous, and the visual indicator of the hair color changing was a neat way to show which alter is fronting.
There’s some inner world stuff that’s central to the story and while there are a lot of fantasy elements, I actually didn’t mind it as a storyline and a way to explain some of the amnesia Elle experiences and her general experience in brain space.
Where I start having issues is the explanation for Elle’s alters. I guess I have to admit, Elle isn’t diagnosed with DID or OSDD in-story. She’s technically (mis?)diagnosed with bipolar disorder (which, I think a lot of people with OSDDID will also relate to. That was a diagnosis I got and then had removed later when it was clear something else was going on). So while the narrative doesn’t explicitly tell you “this is someone with a complex dissociative disorder!!!” it’s very much in the subtext.
Which is why the turn in the second volume is … kind of a slap in the face? (Spoilers ahead.)
I kept waiting to find out what had caused each alter to split. I was especially interested in the personality who doesn’t speak — I figured there was an interesting origin story there.
Instead … the story veers off in the direction of, “Elle is the is way because she was actually several embryos who fused into one.”
Oof.
It doesn’t explore trauma beyond mentioning a kidnapping attempt when Elle was young (and not even delving into it as the cause of a split. It’s just a thing that happened).
It feels like the creators of this work may have wanted to do something else with it? Elle was supposedly adopted as an infant, but there are no baby pictures of her and no photos at all until around age 6. This is never explained. The kidnapping attempt is mentioned but downplayed. The ending feels exceptionally rushed.
It’s frustrating because MUCH of this story is very relatable, and the inner-world fantasy aspects might not be super grounded but they don’t completely come off as misinformation. But that chimera plot point (and look — chimerism in people is real and SUPER cool. It just doesn’t cause complex dissociative disorders) and the pacing issues near the end make it kinda come to a crashing stop.
I guess this means my search for good OSDDID rep in media continues …

Why isn’t SBC getting updated anymore :(
On patreon I am redrawing my comic so everything I’m doing has stopped p much
On webtoon because it’s in a period where I took time off from SCBME in real time! Its coming back on the 19th
I know it can be kind of annoying but because I am working on like times 3-5 projects at once to keep myself a float so I have to give myself enough space inbetween things so I don’t die

What did you think of Matt Lucas as Theandier?
LOVED him.
I think he is a great example of some roles don't need an incredible Broadway voice if the acting is there.
Matt Lucas sings decently. Not great, but serviceable, but he embodies the character and he looks like he's having so much fun up there.
Thenardier is a comic relief role, he doesn't need to be sung amazingly, he needs to be the jester. And Matt Lucas embodies that beautifully. SO MUCH BETTER THAN SBC. Master of the House is such a treat, to see him having such a great time up there.

Iterator OCs 2: Electric Boogaloo
And the followup to my first Iterator OCs post: the other four! Same as last time, big credit to JuniperRainz for the bases I used and mildly edited for these characters!
Scries for Stained Light, he/they. SSL is a calm Iterator, being rather kindhearted for any little creature that wanders near him. He holds many pearls and memories of Ancients that were given to him, especially holding those given by children dear. However they’re not immune to gossip, having at one point seen two Iterator puppets free from their cans via an Overseer, and spreading the news to a good friend, SBC. SSL really just lives for the sentiment, and continues to ponder the Great Problem, not out of boredom or necessity, but rather because he knows the Ancients would have loved to hear his thoughts, even if they no longer can. Some days, though, they do wish they could have walked in their city among their Ancient friends, or go down and explore the lands Ancients once claimed to create them, and meet their fellow Iterators in person. But until the day he’s shoved into the situation in which he can go free, he’s content to stay where he is and ponder an unreachable solution.
Tumblr media
Once Flawless, she/he/it. OF is an old, old Iterator, being one of the first created, hence the name. Over time her puppet and structure was overcome with rust and breaking systems, leaving her isolated from communications. Even despite this fate coming much sooner than any other Iterator, he doesn’t hold anything against his creators, instead just staying on his lonesome with no care for what should come of his future. It’s content to play with the lizards, regardless of its degrading systems preventing it from doing much. Her structure ended up collapsing from wear, and her only real reaction was that creatures will be more able to reach her. Even despite his apathy towards his own state, he’s horribly caring to every other Iterator and creature in the world, worrying endlessly when his most common visitor doesn’t come back one cycle, or another comes back injured.
Tumblr media
Flooded Stream of Tears, they/them. FST is cynical and rude, but knows when to calm down and approach things from a softer angle. They think distastefully of their creators, hoping to eventually reach a self-destruction after the legend of Sliver of Straw spread to their local group. In doing so, however, they make sure to avoid harming any others, having heard the horror stories of Sliver’s group falling apart, and not due to aging metal. Being found by TCU was a sort of saving grace, the other Iterator giving them a perfect out, locating the Void Sea. Their journey takes them far, but they’re determined. And, via a modified Vulture designed to act as portable communication arrays, is still able to talk to other Iterators and report their findings across the lands!
Tumblr media
Astronomical Complacence (yes I spelled her name wrong in the thing), she/they/it. AC can be best described by ‘little shit’. They’re trolly and funny and wants everyone to be happy, even though their methods of doing so are less than conventional. One too many nearby Iterators have had a trained lizard or slugcat crawling into their chambers and proceeding to juggle, guarded by a purple Overseer. Nevertheless, it’s attempts do succeed, and its happy to be the comic relief when everything else gets far too stressful. When members of their local group begin freeing themselves from their cans, AC gets the idea to basically host a sort of travelling circus, in which they’ll tame various creatures and travel to any Iterator they wish, and offer them company and a fun show to boot! Still, their own worry is strong, as they want everyone to be happy and that’s a hard task to fufill, especially when the stories of the local group some ways away reaches theirs. Such sad souls fill the land, and a task as impossible as hers can only lead to mental deterioration.
Tumblr media
And that’s all! Thanks for reading if you did and I hope everyone has a wonderful day <3

I know shared/extended universes have been done to death at this point but I have this Curse you see (aka I was a MCU fan for 7 years. no im not ashamed of this I think [most] of those movies are genuinely good fight me). I say this because my 3 main paracosms (Phantasmagoria, Mad as a Crow, StoryBook City) are connected. Like, not only are there alternate versions of some paras that exist in each universe (Calypso, Jervis, and Phineas are all Alternates/technically the same person in this regard) but each paracosm exists within the other.
"Mad as a Crow" is a comic book series held in a comic book store that False Moon canonically visits at the end of Phantasmagoria. Like Calypso has read about Jervis & is probably like "he just like me fr".
"StoryBook City" is actually a show called "Toybox Tutors" -- a children's show where each spokesman is a teacher & all the other Fables are students. Jervis & Alice grew up watching it and it canonically sparked their interest in Alice in Wonderland thanks to how Phineas & Alice were portrayed in that show. I think it's also a show Blair watches frequently because that would be perfect.
"Phantasmagoria" is a game....I haven't worked out the specific details but I think Eddie worked on part of "Fade into Insomnia" (since i sometimes imagine it in the style of those rpg horror games) before getting fired and becoming a criminal.
I haven't really worked out how Phantasmagoria & MaaC appear in SBC yet. It's not like they don't exist I just don't know how they do.

To understand the lay-offs at DC Comics and Warner Brothers, you have to understand who is calling the shots. Warner was recently bought by AT&T. And like any villain in a story, AT&T is a disguise.
I used to work for Pac Bell, the California Phone company. In the 1990s it was bought by SBC, a Texas Company that went on a buying spree of phone companies. It paid for it by cost cutting - laying people off.
They were also “we know best” and squashed any new ideas. Imagine, telecommuting was a concept photo companies sold to business because it would require buying data lines. But SBC didn’t trust its own employees to telecommute. You needed to get a vice-president’s approval to work at home.
By aughts, the Long Distance Company AT&T was in dire financially straits. So SBC bought it. No one knew what SBC was so it bought AT&T because it had the best name recognition. So AT&T is really a backward thinking Texas Company. That’s who is making decisions regarding Warner and DC Comics.
In 2014, AT&T paid $67 billion to acquire Direct TV in an effort to get into the television business. That didn’t go so well (they are now trying to sell pieces off). This is what motivated their next purchase.
AT&T paid $85 billion for Time/Warner. As I’ve explained above, they immediately follow purchases with lay-offs. Comic books don’t make enough profit to impact AT&T’s bottom line so naturally DC Comics’ staff was a target. But in their backward thinking they don’t realize how comic books build fan bases, and fans go to the movies that create billion dollar movie franchises.
