"That's not important right now." As far as Scarlett was concerned, the only thing that mattered in that moment was attempting to talk some sense into her brother who was obviously still reeling from the conversation that had just taken place with their mother. While she hadn't been home to witness the back and forth for herself, John Ross had managed to do a pretty decent job of giving a recap, probably without even trying.

"Don't you remember what happened all those times Daddy tried to lock her away for drinking? What makes you so sure this time's gonna be any different?" A good handful of them had only been threats, and neither of the couple’s two children had been born yet when J.R. had actually put Sue Ellen in that Fort Worth sanatarium, but Scarlett had heard enough bits and pieces over the years to put two and two together. She could tell how much the experience scarred her mama and how little it'd actually helped.

Then again, maybe John Ross had a point. What other options did they have, really? Sue Ellen had openly admitted that she'd been drinking the night before the funeral, and it’d broken what was left of her daughter's already deeply wounded heart. Maybe it shouldn't have come as all that much of a surprise to learn the one night had turned into multiple, especially given the circumstances, but Scarlett had been hoping deep down that her mother was stronger than that. Just because she'd been sober for around twenty-five years or so, that apparently didn't mean it was okay to no longer worry about the possibility of a relapse. As much as it hurt to consider, maybe things wouldn't have gotten this far if she'd just taken the time to set her own grief aside and keep a better watch over Sue Ellen's.

"Look, why can't we just try ‘n handle it on our own first? I don't care if I have to search the house from top t' bottom to make sure she doesn't have some sort of secret stash anywhere. I'll get rid of all the alcohol, and then I'll keep her here until she dries out. Maybe then she'll be more willing to talk about goin' to a meeting and whatever happens next."

It was worth a shot, wasn't it? John Ross surely had to see just how serious his little sister was about the whole thing, especially given that she was so willing to take full responsibility and manage everything on her own so he could get back to his own life and whatever he already had up his sleeve business wise. After all, she'd helped to make at least a part of the mess, so wasn't it her duty to help clean it up now?

"Just promise me you won't put her back in that sanitarium. All it's gonna do is backfire on all of us, and the last thing this family needs right now is one more backstabbing betrayal to add to the list."

Being the eldest child had its pros and cons, and this was definitely one of the cons. John Ross always felt like he needed to carry the weight of the family on his shoulders, especially now that J.R. was gone. He was essentially taking over the man of the house role, and clearly he was set to follow in his father’s footsteps in more ways than one. He listened to what Scarlett had to say about the situation, genuinely hearing her out, but he still didn’t think trying to handle this at home by themselves was a good idea.

“You wanna take on that responsibility? Fine. Go for it. But I’m not helpin’, and the second I see her drunk again, I’m gonna ship her off whether you like it or not.” 

He wouldn���t let Sue Ellen continue down this path and potentially cause the company - and the Ewing family name - to deteriorate because she couldn’t help but imbibe every day. If Scarlett truly thought she could keep their mother from somehow stashing alcohol around the house or getting any of the staff of the ranch to run out and grab more for her when she discovered it was all gone, then good for her. John Ross knew better; he knew that there was nothing they could do to stop their mother from drinking unless she truly wanted to be done with the vice - and it was evident from her actions as of late that she did not.

“I can’t make any promises about that,” he stated truthfully. “I’ll do my best to keep her outta that place, but if it comes down to that, I’d rather her end up there to get the help she needs than be here where she can slowly drink herself to death!” 

Surely Scarlett could understand that some things had to happen, even if they didn’t seem like the best option at the time. Placing a hand on his little sister’s shoulder, he clapped it a couple of times, offering her a complacent smile. 

“Everythin’ is gonna be alright, Scar. We’ll make sure of it, one way or another.”

OKAY SO I JUST FINISHED SECRET INVASION (I know I'm late to the party but it was airing while I was at Stagedoor and I have like no signal there and wifi is spotty at best) AND I AM 1. U N W E L L and 2. BREAKING OUT THE RED STRING REGARDING THIS GOING INTO THUNDERBOLTS SO STRAP IN

(spoilers below the break and also this is gonna be a long one)

So I know they've said the Thunderbolts movie is gonna have things to do with Vibranium, and I get that, but part of me thinks the Skrulls are gonna play a part in it.

Edit: HAD TO EDIT THIS POST BC I FULLY FORGOT ABOUT THE EXISTENCE OF JOHN WALKER. LIKE. TRULY IMPRESSIVE HONESTLY.

Okay so I have a lot of thoughts so we're just gonna word vomit

HEAR ME OUT

This may be entire circumstantial evidence but looking at the lineup we have 3 people who fight with brute force in a hand to hand situation (Bucky, Alexei, Antonia kinda), 3 people who are shown to be amazing ranged weapon fighters (Bucky, Antonia, Yelena)

And also Ava bc I havent figured out how her specific power set factors into this theory but I think someone like her is just giid to have around for strategic/espionage/surveillance reasons.

We've seen in SI that Skrulls even without the Super Skrull machine have some sort of enhanced strength with Talos in like the first or second episode and then again during the Motorcade fight when he saves the President

(and we will GET to the president)

which for Super Soldiers might be an even match, like Steve and Bucky in CATWS

or at least they can take a lot more damage and heal a lot quicker than the others.

Ranged weapons, I mean there's a full on human/Skrull war going on now, you're probably gonna want at least some people who can stay out of direct fighting

or in the case of Bucky and Antonia, you can't have them taking damage all the time,

and then also having someone like Ava who can sneak around unseen and undetected is of course a good way to infiltrate Skrull bases undetected/figure out who all is a Skrull/again she's just generally a strategic advantage to any team she's a part of imo

The Vibranium could also still factor into it too

I mean Skrulls are an alien species and Vibranium is a metal from space like it isn't unheard of

Also I have a horrible thought that won't happen bc Chris and Scarlett are gone but Bucky and Yelena having to fight Skrulls that look like Steve or Nat respectively would make me U N W E L L

I don't think it would inhibit them tbh, I think it would go a lot more like the Mustang Vs. Envy fight at the end of FMAB where it's like "they're dead I know they're dead and the fact you're wearing their face isn't weakening me it's making me angrier"

I'm basing this solely on a rumor I heard months ago abt Ross's role Thunderbolts so big grain of salt here

but from what little I know about him he seem like an "ends justify the war crimes" type guy

so my thought is he's sending the Thunderbolts in to do something relating to Skrulls

The Super Skrull machine may be how we specifically get Red Hulk too

I know we established in She-Hulk that the Hulk blood can be injected and stuff

But my thought is maybe he recreates it or something

And when infused with Radiation instead of Gamma rays (I don't know science they might be too different idk) it gives us Red Hulk instead of the usual Hulks we get, or anything like Abomination

That one has less backing it I just think it's neat

Top Names, Jackie and Hyde.

Okay, so this one's a bit different from the Eric and Donna posts. Because Jackie would have so many girl names she would love, but she would pick from a fairly small pool of boy names. She really, really wants a daughter, and it shows.

Meanwhile, Hyde's more lax about names than Eric, Donna, and Jackie. He wants to name his kids after relatives and other people that are important in his life (whether it's his best friend Eric or music artists that mean a lot to him).

But for the most part, he isn't that picky. He would absolutely rip into Eric if he named his daughter Leia, though (which Eric wouldn't). and he would generally draw the line at something really weird or a name that symbolizes something he hates/is generally questionable.

For example. Jackie would love the name Ashley in the 80s and 90s, but Hyde would hate it, because it would remind him of Gone With The Wind, a movie he hates (especially after he discovers he's half black). And if Jackie and Hyde were millennials, Jackie would absolutely love the name Scarlett. Which, once again, Hyde would hate. Because of the Gone With The Wind connection.

The Girls:

Sarah. It means princess, after all.

Olivia. After Olivia Newton John, but Hyde really loves the nickname Liv.

Jessica. The most popular girl's name of the 80s and early 90s, which Jackie loves. Meanwhile, Jennifer has some baggage in my verse, so she stays away from that.

Gabrielle. After Coco Chanel, duh.

Katherine, or Caitlin. One of the few names added by Hyde. After Kitty, obviously.

Sophia/Sophie. It means wisdom.

Grace. After Grace Kelly.

Nicole. Perfect for a Christmas baby.

Rebecca. It holds special significance in my verse, but in general? Jackie loves names that end in -ca. Jessica, Rebecca, Veronica, Bianca, etc.

Alicia. A girly girl 80s name that Hyde would likely be fine with.

Honorable Mentions: Audrey and Diana, but they sound meh with the surname Hyde. Stephanie, after Steven. Mariah, from the 90s onward, since Jackie's a huge Mariah fan. Emma, if she has a baby late in life, after Rachel's baby in Friends (even though Jackie hates Ross and Rachel with a burning passion).

The Boys:

James. Steven's middle name. It's also after Jimmy Page, and after James Taylor (who Jack and Jackie listened to excessively when she was young). Plus, James means "supplanter," just like the name Jacqueline. So it's after his mother, too.

John. Jack's birth name, and after John Lennon. And Elton John. The name Jonathan's not out of the ballpark, either.

William. After WB, of course.

Steven, after her puddin' pop.

Gabriel. Jackie's pick, the male version of Gabrielle. Still after Coco Chanel.

Honorable Mentions: Reginald, after Red, but it's more likely to be a middle name (same with the name Eric, too). Nicholas, like Nicole, would be for a Christmas baby. Daniel, after the Elton John song, since Jackie and Hyde listen to lots and lots of Elton John together. "Tiny Dancer" is their favorite, and is basically their song. And "Your Song" is basically their song, too.

She decided to thank the gesture by sleeping with my husband and intentionally sabotaging me for fun." Her words were concise, without emotion. As if she had distanced herself from the very raw pain it had instilled within her veins. The sole Barnes daughter was now observing it like some kind of failed antic of a child. "I've hit rock bottom several times, Scarlett. I learned not to ask for help. I helped myself. Chose to feed the fire, and not let it consume me. If she can't do that on her own, she deserves whatever else comes to her. I'll help Ann in anything she needs, but Emma to me--is a walking corpse I want nothing to do with. If you want to help her out, know you'll likely fall into the sinkhole she inevidently creates. Try not to let it take too much of you."

"I knew this was a mistake. I tried to tell you, but no. You're the big brother, and you always have to be right."

"What’re you talkin' about?" John Ross had barely stepped foot into the kitchen before the accusations were being hurled in his direction. To say he was confused as to where they were coming from and what had suddenly brought them on would be a definite understatement.

"Like you don't know," Scarlett scoffed, clearly not in the mood. "That little plan to have Mama committed -- that I still can't believe I let you talk me into, by the way -- it completely backfired right in our faces. She clearly doesn't trust either one of us, and I honestly wouldn't be surprised if she actually hates us for how cold and cruel we were."

A somewhat involuntary roll of the eyes was John Ross' initial response to his younger sister's argument. She always did have a flair for the dramatics, ever since they were kids. Some things truly never changed.

"I didn't force you to do anything, Scar. If you didn't want to go along with the plan, you never should've agreed to it."

Maybe her brother had a point, but that didn't mean Scarlett was ready to admit to anything just yet. Oh no, she wouldn't back down and move on until she'd come out on top victorious in the whole thing, whether she was actually in the right or not.

"We should've found another way to handle it. That's all I'm saying. I mean, she was sober for over two decades before she fell off the wagon this time. That has to count for something, right? Maybe all she needed was a couple of drinks to get her through the initial shock of everything, and ---"

Now it was John Ross' turn to scoff. Did Scarlett honestly not remember what it was like when they were growing up? Had she for one reason or another purposely blocked out the times when J.R. had told them Sue Ellen was sick, when in actual reality she was simply too drunk to tuck them into bed at night?

"I'm not tryin' to make excuses for her." That much Scarlett wanted to make clear, almost as if she could read her brother's mind in that moment. "I just remember certain things differently than you do. That's all."

"Do share," he prompted, both wanting as well as needing a bit more elaboration.

"I'm just sayin' that by the time I was old enough to retain actual memories, she'd already quit drinking. She and Daddy were happy together, and we were a real family. Then when the Wicked Witch of Weststar swooped in and completely ruined everything, instead of goin' right back to the bottle, she just tried to ruin Daddy's life instead."

The explanation made enough sense, but John Ross still stood by his earlier decision.

"Just because you might not remember how bad things used to be, it doesn't mean she doesn't have a problem."

Once again, there was no valid argument for Scarlett to fire back with, and both siblings knew it.

"We did what we had to do at the time. What's done is done." As far as he was concerned, it truly was as simple as that.

The smallest hint of a soft sigh filled the space between them as Scarlett finally gave in, just not before having the last word.

"I hope you're right, Jerkface.”

Various D-Sides Spooky Month Concepts/Headcanons

Skid and Pump

They met one Halloween after the Hatzgang got done bullying Skid. Pump just sat on the curb beside him and Skid offered him some candy

Pump is selectively mute and only really talks to Skid, Lila, and his family

While the large fang is part of his costume, Skid actually does have a pair of small natural fangs

Pump is actually a specter, not a ghost, and he just calls himself a ghost because more people know what that is

Pump was also born a specter and is capable of aging, albeit slowly

They broke into Daddy Dearest’s mansion during week 2 as part of a dare from the Hatzgang

They were the ones who named D-Sides Monster “Chester”

Skid wouldn’t actually be heartbroken if he found out Pump was a ghost; if anything, he’d be sad that he didn’t find out sooner

Skid is freakishly strong for a smol bean, he could easily pick up Roy

If the two had new names better fitting their costumes, they’d be Drac and Ecto

They go to the coffee shop a lot bc it sells hot cocoa and cherries

Kevin

Works at a coffee shop instead of a candy store

His associated colors are green and brown instead of pink and white

Actually pretty happy with his job, but still pretty tired bc he works a late shift

Two-tone hair, light brown and dark brown - basically looks like a swirled mocha cup

Has freckles

Lila

Cute scientist during the day, punk MILF at night

Way more aware of the supernatural than her canon counterpart, and much more interested in it; had she not become a scientist, she would’ve gone into parapsychology

Basically the same personality-wise, though Jack is a bit more competent and is afraid of mimes rather than clowns

Reformed criminals and masters of disguise! They work undercover jobs at the same precinct John and Jack do

Are always wearing clothes/costumes that cover at least one part of their faces

Frequently assigned to the same cases John and Jack are. They butt heads a lot

The taller one has sharp teeth

The Hatzgang

Their names begin with “Re” rather than “Ro” - Reese (Roy), Reid (Ross), and Reggie (Robert)

Reggie is short for Reginald and he gets super embarrassed when people call him that

Reid has an emo fringe and bangs that cover his left eye, Reggie has super fluffy hair that covers his right eye, and Reese has glasses, though they’re usually just hanging off his sweater

Reese has sharp teeth

Moloch

An electricity demon

Skid and Pump still summoned him, though because Lila is much more aware of the supernatural, she figured out he was up there way sooner and struck a deal with him - he now powers the lab she works at and even gets paid for it

Overall surprisingly chill if you don’t tick him off

Dexter

His “needs” are focused onto plants rather than animals/people, so he’s much more stable (albeit still pretty weird)

Works at the same coffee shop Kevin does, during the day shift

Is also friends with Kevin

One time he planted weeds into some of the flowers they had around the shop to see how long it would take for the plants to die/for someone to notice. When someone inevitably did notice, he blamed it on the place they got the plants from

Owns a fuckton of carnivorous plants

Actually likes Skid and Pump bc they listen to him talk about said plants

If he met Chester, he’d be super fascinated by him but also would not take him seriously at all

Hair is green with brown tips. Man looks like he shoved his head into a bush
