Now you're the future + Like a storm in the desert!

Oh, thank you! I was particularly fond of the now you're the future series (and the specific fic it takes its name from, part of the past, but now you're the future is probably my personal favorite of them!).

[For others: The series premise is simply that Jyn and Cassian survive Scarif and make it back to Yavin 4, but only Jyn and Cassian. It mainly deals with their escape, the immediate consequences, and where they're at later on.]

And like a storm in the desert is an interesting choice, too, because it's a premise I thought about a lot—I chattered at @ladytharen about it before I had any idea of what to do with it—but I hadn't really figured out how to write it. But a prompt series got me barreling through it in the most self-indulgent way possible and I ended up with a finished(?!) fic. It was really fun and I'm glad that I was able to get the idea for it working.

[The premise for this one is that everyone assumes Jyn and Cassian are together already, and they end up cooperating in the assumption for their own reasons even before going undercover as married, for maximum Fake Relationship energy.]

[Then Y/N spotted Simon sitting on the bench at the playground, holding his baby brother, and seems to be sad]

Kid!Y/N : Is that… Simon?

Kid!Y/N, gasps : It is Simon! SI! *runs to Simon*

Kid!Simon, perks up hearing his signature nickname : Y/N?

Kid!Y/N : It really is you! Good golly, I haven’t seen you around for weeks! Where have you been, silly? You made me worried!

Kid!Y/N, swinging legs : So uhh do you wanna talk about why you weren’t allowed to come to hang out with me?

Kid!Simon, blew raspberries : Nothing out of usual, my dad argued with my mom. I stood up for her, only for him to hit me again. Then he grounded me.

Kid!Y/N : Oh.. I’m sorry Si

Kid!Simon, shrugs : It’s fine, I can handle it. Y’know I managed to get out because they were arguing again, and I thought that Tommy might wanted a different view than boring grey walls.

Kid!Y/N : . . .

Kid!Simon : . . .

Kid!Y/N, gasps : I know a way to cheer you up!

Kid!Simon : Oh yeah?

Kid!Y/N, standing in front of him : Okay, so whenever you feel upset or angry, you collect it into your palms!

Kid!Simon : Uhh how do I collect upset and angry?

Kid!Y/N : You just feel where it is and go get it! There’s usually some in your belly or your neck!

[Confused Simon copying Y/N’s actions by grabbing his upset from his belly into his palm]

Kid!Y/N : And always remember to check your ears, okay?

[Simon & Y/N bounce up and down with their heads cocked, as though they're trying to shake something out of their ears, with their hands held out to catch it while giggling]

Kid!Y/N : Now did you collect all your upset and angry in your hands?

Kid!Simon : Yeah, what do I do with it?

Kid!Y/N : Do you want to keep it?

Kid!Simon, sticking his tongue out in disgust : No way!

Kid!Y/N : Well if you don’t want it, you throw it into the garbage bin!

[Cues to Simon throwing his ‘upset’ & ‘angry’ into the bin, then Y/N closes the lid]

Kid!Y/N : There, now how do you feel?

I immediately started making up rules for myself because I'm that kind of person, so I'm excluding a) fics that I've never put on AO3 and b) fics that I'm not very far into actually writing (I was tempted to include Love, Pride & Delicacy but no, it's early days). Also, my faves are not perfectly consistent over time. BUT at this moment, in no particular order:

per ardua ad astra: Jyn/Cassian Star Wars AU where Jyn, Cassian, and Bodhi escape Scarif in an Imperial shuttle only to get caught in the Death Star's tractor beam and forced to pass themselves off as Imperials. Mostly but not quite finished & on hiatus, and uneven in points, but a true labor of love <3

First Impressions: m!Elizabeth/f!Darcy retelling of P&P. Complete! I had to wrap it up very quickly at the end for the exchange it was part of, but it's still my baby.

The Jedi and the Sith Lord: the third fic in my f!Luke Skywalker series, The Adventures of Lucy Skywalker, and easily my favorite part of it; apart from a few localized changes in the first two fics, they were mostly glued to the rails of canon to set up the "real" story of TJATSL (and its outlined but unwritten sequel). This one starts with Lucy being taken captive at Cloud City by Vader to turn her to the Dark Side before the Emperor/patriarchy can strike her down, and follows their perspectives during her direct captivity. Technically completed but in a setting-up-the-sequel way.

the gift of men: a fic about Eldarion’s youthful marriage to one of Faramir and Éowyn’s daughters/a sort of guided tour through the early Fourth Age in Gondor as seen by Eldarion. This is easily my least popular fic on this list for some predictable reasons, but I really enjoyed writing it (over several years, though it’s only 1k!).

in tongues and quiet sighs: back to SW! This is a companion piece to my now you’re the future series about Jyn and Cassian (and only Jyn and Cassian) making it off Scarif and being active in the OT era. I’m fond of the other fics, but I think this is my favorite one—it’s the one about the dynamic between Leia, Cassian, and Alderaanian/space Spanish.
