Down The Cabbit Hole: The Weird World of Klonoa Literature - An Archive (Part 1)
Tumblr media
It was the Summer of 2022: the HD collection of Klonoa: Door to Phantomile and Klonoa 2: Lunatea's Veil was released unto this world, and into my life. My reaction in seeing these videogames briefly in the forefront of (semi)popular culture was one of insurmountable elation. To bask into the vicarious feelings of people discovering The Fluffy Boy and his bittersweet adventures for the first time was an indescribable experience, almost as much as it was to re-immerse myself into it all. For a short time in human history, there was a proper, tangible Zeitgeist, a palpable excitement, surrounding one of my favourite things of all time, ever. Naturally, as a long time fan, an educated Klonoa scholar, I have provided several important contributions to the fandom... and I have bothered many Twitch streamers, in the process.
Exhibit A:
youtube
At this time, one of my biggest endeavours was the creation of a fan-page on the old deceased bird website, celebrating the existence of these games as well as the weird history of the series. That account's activity has all but gone the way of said avian critter but there is still a rich archive worth of material that I *needed* to conserve for posterity. I wouldn't want anyone on the Internet to be deprived of my immaculately composed memes, after all!
Here's a small selection, presented without context:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
By far, the biggest body of work on that fan-page was my deep dive into the extremely lopsided plain of Klonoa comics, the mere presence of which left me scared and confused for reasons that shall become all too clear in a few moments. With the premise out of the way, I am going to share with you my various posts on the subject of Fluffy Boy Literature, mostly raw and unaltered, for your eye-balling pleasure. These salvaged tweets contain my thoughts, musings, honest reactions and critiques over the (surprisingly) multi-faceted girth of comics available to us, in one form or the other, as well as several panels to contextualize said reactions. Join me down the Cabbit hole, won't you?
We begin this journey with the Bandai Namco officially licensed webcomic, Klonoa: Dream Traveller of Noctis Sol.
---
18 July 2022
-
Perhaps against my better judgment, I have made the decision to read the ill-fated Klonoa webcomic series written between 2012 and 2014. It is an odd curio of officially published media that was released in an unconventional manner. Stay tuned as I report on my findings.
Tumblr media
-
The publisher was a website called ShiftyLook which seemingly hosted a whole plethora of comics based off several Namco's franchises: titles such as Wonder Momo and, of course, this non-canonical Klonoa adventure.
-
It was drawn by Hitoshi Ariga, whose claim to fame comes from illustrating a respectable amount of Megaman manga and Pokémon trading cards, as well as volumes of The Big O adaptation. Jim Zub is credited as the writer which is a big deal - according to Wikipedia.
-
I am cautiously excited about reading this story even as I am fully aware of its untimely demise. More over, the fact it's been forcibly removed from whatever passes as The Canon means I won't have to be too pedantic about its interpretation of the *grander* Klonoa narrative.
-
Which is good because I inherently disagree with any and all attempts to expand on the inner-mechanics of "Dream Travelling" when the lack of an explanation leaves the door opened for much more interesting discourse and analysis. Not knowing is what makes Klonoa interesting.
-
I HATE THIS IMMEDIATELY!!!
Tumblr media
-
Oh no, you didn't!
Tumblr media
-
I can just picture the conversation in my head. "You have OTHER friends, Klonoa?" "No. I have BETTER friends, Huepow." Hey, if you have to completely ruin the endings of two of the best games ever made, you might as well GO THERE!
Tumblr media
-
On the other hand, this is a primo villain design.
Tumblr media
-
There was a rather jarring change in art style for this page. The new illustrator is Jeffrey "Chamba" Cruz, another prolific comic maker.
Tumblr media
-
Ah, of course! Guntzland! Guntz's place! The place of Guntz! The place made specifically for Guntz! ... That Guntzland? I feel like I'm going insane.
Tumblr media
-
Ariga has thankfully returned to illustrate this comic. His quality work is in the only highlight in this otherwise abysmal experience.
Tumblr media
-
A black and white dream world is a rather cheeky way to justify saving money on colouring.
Tumblr media
-
"I FOUND YOU, FAKER!"
Tumblr media
-
You know, I had hoped, perhaps naively, that Klonoa could have spared me the evil doppelganger routine. This comic is a constant cavalcade of nonsense advancing at the speed of thought whilst ironically bereft of any.
-
The gang is all here. Waaaaaahoooooooo....
Tumblr media
-
This is the last page. This is the note in which the comic ends. It's probably for the best, really.
Tumblr media
-
Overall, this was a toothless, dull approximation of a *Big Crossover Event* the likes of which could not possibly appeal to anyone. It was too entrenched in the games' (unneeded) continuity to attract new fans and it was too much of a travesty to please old fans. It was just bad.
-
The choice to undercut the emotional, narrative and thematic impact from both Door to Phantomile and Lunatea's Veil for the sake of cheap fan-service makes this *OFFICIALLY LICENSED* material exceptionally vapid even by corporate standards. Read fanfiction, instead.
---
Appropriately enough, the next piece of literature under the proverbial lens would be an unofficial continuation to the cancelled webcomic. So, yes, I followed my own suggestion there.
However, as I find myself encumbered by arbitrary image limits on this blog, I will continue my archival sharing in the next instalment of this now multi-part series. Stay tuned, fellow Phantomilians, for the story is about to get much more interesting.

On January 6th 1981, the Scottish author AJ Cronin died in Switzerland.
AJ Cronin was born in Cardross, Dumbartonshire in 1896. He was a fine athlete as well as an outstanding student; qualifying in medicine at Glasgow with top honours. He worked at the Rotunda, Dublin, and on the Clyde before moving to Tredegar in Wales. He was a Medical Inspector of Mines, and was involved in the mining disaster at Ystfad colliery in which 38 miners drowned, and drew on these experiences in his writing. He moved on to Harley Street in London and finally established a very successful practice at 152 Westbourne Grove in Notting Hill, west London, where he practised until 1930.
Cronin’s writing career began when he was given six month’s bed rest for a digestive complaint. While convalescing from an attack of gastric ulcers on a lonely farm in the Highlands, he wrote Hatter’s Castle in 1931, about a Scottish hatmaker obsessed with the idea of his noble birth. It became a best seller. In the United States, a reviewer for The New York Times found it a work of a novelist “destined for the seats of the mighty.”
Thereafter, Dr. Cronin devoted himself full-time to writing. In 1935, he wrote The Stars Look Down, the story of a North England mining community that quickly captured attention. While The Times of London said the author had “a bent for melodrama,” The New York Times found him “uncannily like Dickens.” In 1941, the book was made into a highly praised film directed by Carol Reed for M-G-M. Story of Missionary in China.
The Citadel again drew on Mr. Cronin’s own experiences. It was the story of a young Scottish doctor in a Welsh mining village who sets up a fashionable practice in London and realizes the values of the life he had abandoned.
When The Keys of the Kingdom was published in 1941, it passed the half-million mark in sales and was a Book-of-the-Month Club selection. The hero of the novel was a self-sacrificing Catholic priest sent by his superiors into long service as a missionary in China.
By 1958, the total sales of his books in the United States alone had passed the seven million.
Arguably Cronins most well known work is ‘Dr. Finlay’s Casebook, about a pair of Scottish doctors sharing a practice. It became one of the longest-running British television series.
A J Cronin died at the age of 84 in a clinic in the village of Glion, near Montreux, Switzerland, where he had lived for the last 25 years of his life.
The pics include a curios advert for Ballenitins’s an American brewery, the campaign created a series of ads with at least thirteen different writers. They asked each one “How would you put a glass of Ballantine Ale into words?” Each author wrote a page that included reference to their beer
His 1952 piece for Ballantine was done as a reminiscence of his first taste of Ballantine in America, just after a well-played round of golf:
My first meeting with Ballantine Ale is still vivid in my memory.
It was a sweltering summer day at York Harbor, Maine, shortly after I first came to these United States. I thought it would be a memorable day because I shot the lowest golf score I ever made — a 72.
But in the locker room after the game, a friend said: “Try a Ballantine.”
I did — straight from the icebox. And as it flowed over by parched throat — tangy and refreshing in every swallow — I realized with a big thrill that my search for my favourite beverage was ended. I had always like ale, but here was something lighter, something better than anything I’d ever had abroad.
Well, my discovery outweighed by golf course. I remember that day as the time the “three rings” first rang the bell for me.
The last pic is of his grave at Cimetière de La Tour-de-Peilz La Tour-de-Peilz, District de la Riviera-Pays-d’Enhaut, Vaud, Switzerland

SCAVENGER, a popular cartoon about a boar adventurer named Claribel Scavenger, and a rotating selection of sidekicks, including her son, Sonny Scavenger, who in season 2, touched a cursed idol that changed her into a girl. This plot point for some reason goes unresolved by the end of the episode and just kinda sticks.
The show was vaguely 30sish, like, Indiana Jones sort of setting, with occasional anachronism for retro-futuristic technology and such.
Claribel is boisterous and lucky, always ready to venture into ancient tombs full of traps and curses, a little bit for treasure, but mostly for the excitement.  Often there’s an excuse as to why plundering these ancient treasures is totally cool but like. Y’know.  She’s absurdly lucky, far moreso than her companions. The recurring gag is of course that she makes stunts and evasion look effortless and then whoever’s with her this episode just totally pratfalls their way through.  Her luck extends to pretty much everything, too. Never play cards against her. Never play cards against her.
Sonora was the shy, quiet type who got dragged along adventures largely against her will.  She was a little nerd who would rather have spent all her time in the movie theater or maybe just school in one place for an extended period of time, although by the start of season 3, she became notably more confident in her adventuring. Still would rather watch movies.
By the end of the series, Claribel opened up her own little curio shop, to show off and sell some of the treasures she’d acquired over the years, with Sonora, grown up now, being absolutely pleased to manage the store.  Despite the famous name attached to it, the fact that Claribel was never there (a true adventurer never retires!) and the fact that everything was either too expensive or just straight up cursed meant that it was not a popular destination.
Naturally, some of the multiverse out there shows up as tv shows in other universes. Infinite possibilities and all that. That’s how Claribel’s Trades got picked up by Venture and Sonora was whisked away to a world much different than her own.
This is where she discovered Hot Topic, and fell in love immediately.
Claribel, after reconnecting with her missing shop, was absolutely ecstatic about the possibility of visiting other worlds.  Think of the new and exotic tombs to explore that she had never dreamed of! Now she truly never had to retire!
Claribel loves being recognized and recounting her escapades with fans.  Sonora mostly just finds it uncomfortable when people know very specific details about her life.  Still, she likes it here. It’s cool, and now you can watch videos on a phone, which you can take with you. Crazy.

Things That (Should) be Happening in 2023
You can also read and boost this on itch.
I've gone back and forth over making a post (or chain thereof) like this for some time, but always flaked out on some lazy excuse of "I like dropping things with no warning for the surprise factor," and "Being scared of accountability."
And, yeah, project jumpscare is fun for a while but I'm starting to feel left out of the cycle of teasing little bits of what you're working on for people to comment on. Before that felt pointless because I had no comments point blank, but now I've got a few eyes on my stuff it feels like a decent time as any to start. One game even got fanart. Wild.
I'm currently on the forth of this cycle, so I'm riding it and making a full deal of it. If it ends up I hate doing this I'll just stop and never acknowledge it again.
Here's things that (should) be happening this year.
I'm Exhibiting at WASD Curios
Yeah I still don't believe this either, and ENGLAND ON FIRE got accepted into the WASD Live "weird" indie selection.
I'm going to be at WASD in person at the Curios booth from March 31st to April 1st. If you're going, feel free to drop by and say hi. I'll be handing out some pins if you do.
The PC Problem
As some of you may or may not be aware, I'm currently without my main PC. Most of my stuff was left with my parents when I moved down on a short let, and I am living in what feels like a closet right now and only have access to a chromebook that stutters trying to open discord. Lack of Windows aside, next to no computing power puts intensive game dev out of the question. It can barely survive bitsy once projects start getting chunky.
Fortunately, I'm completely unimpeded doing pure writing, which does work out nicely for me. The games I make spend well over 90% of their time in google docs, and only leave it to get shoved into an engine at the last minute. And for the last 10%, I'm lucky enough to work a job where I can fuck about for an hour on a stupidly powerful PC.
The good: for the games you guys are used to seeing from me, I can make these mostly unimpeded, if not a little slower than usual. Once I get used to the new workflow, it should be business as usual. The bad: this locks me out of doing any complex projects, of which I had several I wanted to take a crack at. This is annoying, for now, but I have enough in mind to keep me occupied—
Until the PC Comes Back
I've got a series of Quinn & Flynn sequels in the works, and this will fill the gap until I get my PC back. Currently, it's looking like a series of 5 games including the first (and even as I'm writing this now, I'm looking at my notes and a tentative 6th). I'm also not making any guarantees that all of them will be released by the time my PC is back, but I will make a guarantee that the run will be finished, at some point, and probably later compiled in omnibus form.
The series is also headed into adult-only territory. There's going to be on-screen sex and no real way to dodge it that doesn't impact the narrative. My apologies if you were under 18 and wanted more Quinn content but also congratulations to the sickos who want more stories with cum.
The 2nd game is going to follow Elias' POV. What happens, you'll have to wait until it comes out.
Pun not intended. I just noticed this while proofreading.
The PC Returns
So, the PC is back, and now I can work on those bigger projects I keep mentioning. Right now, I've got two I've been rotating in my mind and getting increasingly mad I can't pull together.
The first, in full spirit of what inspired it, would be a not-quite remake, and a not-quite sequel, of one of the most popular games I've made so far. I had a whole stack of cut content I wanted to put in that I couldn't because of the jam time limit, and now I want to redo it from the ground up in a bitsy-like engine that's far more flexible. We might even see the old Spdrcstl Special and have multiple engines glued together. You'll have to wait and see what that inspires.
The second is going to be a Proper Game. As in, something with a play time well over a couple hours. It's a Narrat game and leaning hugely into the disco-like mechanics. I'm planning to have enough content to sell it for about 10 quid or so, with the obvious caveat that I don't give a shit if you steal it if you can't afford it.
You'll be a paranormal investigator, tasked to a rural town in Cheshire where, to no rational explanation, buildings have been disappearing. The big twist, however, hinges on how you approach the case. A sceptic in this town may get a completely different story to the superstitious. It's on you to see where belief takes you.
This is going to be extremely heavy, British, and Northern. CWs abound for this one.
Since we're on a wider timescale and I'm still unsure when my beloved returns to me, I have no guarantees I can make here. At the very least, I'd like the first game to be fully released, and the second to have a demo that runs to the end of day one. Keep your eyes peeled.
Other Bits
This bit's a dumping ground. These are projects that have been floating around my head or I have some notes for down already. I decided to throw these here in case one or two make you go "Hey, that sounds cool, line it up next."
These, in no particular order, are:
A wiki-style game a-la Excalibur. I'm planning one in the same universe and as compliment to No Saints Go to Heaven. The main problem is I've gone Motherfucker Unlimited on the worldbuilding of this setting, and beyond that being a task in itself is filtering it all through an in-universe lens. Happening, but a while out. And speaking of—
No Saints Go to Heaven, in a full demo form. I still want to tack bullet hell quasi-rhythm game battles onto it and see if people like it. The problem being this requires a musician and probably a dedicated programmer who knows what they're doing, so this one may be out of the question for a while, as dearly as I love it.
Something with the 12 Cannettes engine. It captivated me the instant I played it and I've been desperate to make a game. I've got something in mind already, but might wait for a jam to fully flesh it out.
Something with Decker. Need to play with this to see where the limits are but I promised myself I would try it after having to pass on Decker Jam. Pending experimentation.
A web engine. It will let you make point and click adventures in the same style as the Club Penguin PSA missions. I am deadly serious about this. Pending more web dev knowledge.
A Len'en fan game. This is literally just that sentence in turns of planning, but I'll make one as soon as an idea comes around. I am very normal about Len'en.
Something using King Gizzard's Polygondwanaland. It's CC0. Album of all time. Have to. Pending what I'm actually going to do with it.
Other Other Bits
Also known as "Stan has a back-and-forth debate over starting a kofi and/or patreon or not."
On one hand, it feels a bit iffy when I have a fulltime job. That money could be going to devs who fully need it rather than me, you know? On the other hand, people are free to spend their money how they want, and extra pizza money sounds decent.
If I do the patreon route I haven't got any ideas for it beyond it being a glorified tip jar that auto-renews. Maybe down the line when I'm working on a Proper Game that has enough meat for update posts it could be a bonus dev log. But if I were to start it up, like, tomorrow, it would be a glorified tip jar.
aight
I think that's about it, for now. I need to put a disclaimer that any and everything mentioned in this post is subject to jam inspiration, scoping, Shiny New Tool syndrome, random hyperfixations, explosions (figurative), explosions (literal), "I didn't feel like it"-itus, and other bullshit under the helpful label of Life.
With that said, Elias & Flynn is definitely happening.
Have a good one.

poe heist cheat sheet PC T0K&
💾 ►►► DOWNLOAD FILE 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 › poe-heist-cheat-sheet. Hello everyone, Heist is my main Currency income and here are some tips about how to invest and get rich using this mechanic. Loot from a 60% delirious t16 Elder Burial Chambers with 4 scarabs, playing solo. From a new/returning player: am I supposed to not be able to. I am FAR from an expert of this league or PoE in general. palatinae (Topic Creator)1 year ago#2. Question after watching a quick couple YouTube on the. Most liked games – ARPGs (Diablo , PoE, TL1&2, TQ&IT), Souls series (DS&Elden Ring) and JRPG, especially Xenoblade and FF series. Also big. Please consider helping keep the wiki up to date. Check the to-do list of updates needed for version 3. Game data exports will becoming later as the technical changes in addition to regular changes take some more time. Quick Guide: This article has a quick guide that shows you how to perform a complete Grand Heist Blueprint. Grand Heists are a single-player or multi-player mechanic introduced in the Heist league , and are performed using Blueprints at The Rogue Harbour. The player must infiltrate a facility that contains multiple wings, retrieve the guarded items without raising an alert, and escape with the contents alive. Unlike regular Heists , Grand Heists require multiple Rogues to complete. The target item, inside a Curio Display , will be a selection of experimented base types , replica unique items , weapons body armour with a Heist enchantment , Thief's Trinkets Thief's Trinket Corrupted You must find the sculpture The Catch in a Smuggler's Den or Underbelly Blueprint to be able to equip this , and currency. You can only take item from the selection before Lockdown begins. The target is listed in the item description of the blueprints. Despite this, the target can be replaced by hidden items such as Heist-exclusive uniques or enchantment orbs. Shift click to unstack. However, sellable artifacts can be found in the side rooms of the Grand Heist. Tip: If players get Exalted Orbs or any items worth a lot of currency, they may simply exit the wing using the escape hatch, and then they may re-enter the wing and resume looting. This removes the Contraband status on all items in the players inventory, so that even if they die the items are not lost. An end-game Grant Heist blueprint that yields a high profit, displaying its 4 unlocked wings and 17 currency rooms. A double- Exalted Orb drop from a single large currency chest in a Grand Heist, using the Regal to Exalted Orb trinket and Vinderi 's ability to duplicate chest contents. Multiple Curio Displays with a selection of drops that players can select from, in a Grand Heist. There, players must assign rogues that will perform each job. After configuring the rogues and confirming the Blueprint, players must then go to Adiyah, the Wayfinder to start the Grand Heist. Unlike a regular heist, a grand heist has multiple wings, and multiple jobs per wing. A typical Grand Heist blueprint drops with only 1 wing and a few rooms unlocked. In order to unlock additional wings and rooms, players can use Whakano to reveal additional wings. Each wing contains its own valuable target item inside a Curio Display. Each wing has its own alert bar and its own lockdown process. After looting one wing and stealing the target item, players may return to Adiyah's portal to loot the next wing. When players enter the location, a map will display multiple entrances. Each entrance leads to one wing. Entering the wing will enter the heist location as usual and all mechanics are exactly the same as regular heists. All items picked up during the Heist are marked as Contraband. Contraband items cannot be used, equipped, or identified and are dropped on death. Unlike regular heists that contain an artifact that is sold for Rogue's Markers , Grand Heists contain valuable loot that players may keep for themselves. Grand heists also have a small chance to drop valuable currency items new to the Heist league , such as a single Prime Regrading Lens Prime Regrading Lens Stack Size: 20 Change the type of quality of a skill gem with quality to another random quality Right click this item then left click a skill gem to apply it. This may reforge the body armour's sockets. Right click this item then left click on the item you wish to modify. Grand Heists contain 5 curio displays per wing, and players may select any one of them. Each curio display contains a different item. This allows players to select the most valuable or most useful item that they wish to have. Upon breaking the curio display of an item, lockdown begins immediately and players cannot take any of the other 4 items. The type of loot is mentioned on the blueprint under the "Heist Target" property, and is within the following categories:. Once the target item is taken or the Lockdown timer runs out, Lockdown begins. More enemies will spawn in the area and try to prevent your escape as usual. Unlike regular heists, Grand Heists allow players to unlock an "escape route" that is often very close to the Curio Display, making it easier for them to survive and escape with the final loot item. This escape route is also marked with on the minimap. Players may leave and re-enter Adiyah's portal multiple times in order to stash items, just like normal heists. The portal is only closed when all wings have gone into lockdown and players have nothing else to explore. Even if players disconnect logout and login, they may return to the Rogue's Harbour and the portal will remain active. If players die before lockdown has begun, all items marked with Contraband are dropped to the ground but Adiyah's portal remains up. Players may then return back to the wing and pick up the loot and therefore nothing is lost. If players die during lockdown, all items marked with Contraband are dropped to the ground. If there are other players in the same party, they may pick up the drops, but if the player is going solo then the loot is lost permanently. The wing will be blocked and players cannot enter the wing again. However, Adiyah's portal remains up and players may enter and loot other wings if any. Players may hire various rogues to assist them in heists and grand heists. Players may select which rogue performs which job and they will accordingly appear in the heist. Each rogue has a specific set of perks that improve drops, allow players to open more reward chests alert level reduction , or simply assist in combat. There are 4 different kinds of monsters that appear across the Grand Heist locations. The location is mentioned in the name of the Grand Heist blueprint, eg. Give this Blueprint to Adiyah to embark on the Grand Heist. The following rewards only drop from Curio Displays in Grand Heists. Path of Exile Wiki. Path of Exile Wiki Explore. Fan Portal. If you fit into that relatively narrow gap of hunger for compromised, high-end PC power, you might as well give six months of GeForce Now 3080 a shot-especially since that span of time will get you through the upcoming fall and winter, which are great times to huddle up next to a hot, overworked Ethernet connection and keep warm by the frame rates.Īrs Technica may earn compensation for sales from links on this post through affiliate programs. We are working to improve this, but have no announcements at this time." For many users it works fine, but occasionally, accounts with 2FA will need to login repeatedly. When pressed on whether Nvidia will ever figure this out in a way that splits the difference between convenience and account security, an Nvidia rep offered the following response: "We don’t control the saving of accounts/passwords. You can nix 2FA on your accounts to have their remote systems more seamlessly remember your gaming accounts if you really want. Then again, Nvidia is arguably doing the proper thing on a security level. On a living room set-top box, it's outright aggravating. This is annoying enough when I'm sitting at my own PC with a mouse and keyboard. On any of the Nvidia service's tiers, from free to 3080, I'm forced to manually reenter and confirm a storefront's credentials nearly every time I boot a new game-and I have to do so while mousing around a PC-like screen, since I'm remotely connecting to an Nvidia PC. At any time, Nvidia GeForce Now can stick you into an awkward PC interface, one that requires gamepad shortcuts to finagle if you're not using a mouse and keyboard, whether because Nvidia's servers didn't download a recent patch or because something on your specific gaming account didn't sync properly. In my personal use case, my biggest complaint boils down to usability, not latency. (Honestly, you can likely run your favorite competitive shooter on a potato laptop with all settings turned to zilch and get adequate performance, anyway.) Twitchy single-player shooters, on the other hand, scream on Geforce Now 3080 with adequate response times and deliciously fluid 120 fps refresh rates, as confirmed by brief dives into Doom Eternal and Deathloop. Further Reading Doom Eternal is a masterful twitch shooter symphony with one sour noteTo be clear, that's not the same as saying that the service is unplayable with mouse-and-keyboard fare-but rather that the insane skill ceiling of competitive shooters is beyond this specific streaming-latency scenario.

This is the first in a little series of five favourite fic rec posts I have planned for some of my favourite authors. Got a few lined up and fingers crossed I’ll manage one or two posts a month. I’m no @sitp-recs though so please expect a lot of ‘vivid’ and ‘evocative’. Hey, the intent is there, and I promise the fics are great!
I thought for this venture I’d kick off with some of the lovely people I’ve been lucky enough to get to know over the past few months, and where better to start than with the fabulous @the-starryknight? From insightful posts about fandom etiquette to her incredible microfics, not to mention the way she supports other creators with posts like this and her regular TLC Tuesday feature, Starry’s such a massive part of Drarry fandom today, and a true writer’s writer (or more accurately, a creator’s creator). Her passion for art and curios is clear in a lot of her work, and the writing is beautiful – mature and elegant. The worlds she creates are so rich that I find myself entranced every time. Starry’s original writing was recently selected to feature in a queer magical anthology which will be available as an e-book later this year here.
Read Starry's works on AO3 here
Matching Pair – T, 4k, a double love story with museum curator Draco and genealogist Harry
Summary: Harry Potter was possibly the last person Draco had expected to find standing at the foot of his favorite portrait at the Tate Magique. And yet, there he is, looking incredibly fit and monopolizing the attentions of the portrait. It's not bloody fair.
Two Zinnias and the Scent of Lemon – M, 17k, fugitive Drarry and floriography
Summary: The Ministry didn’t turn bad overnight. Harry didn’t suddenly turn rogue either. Between covert Legilimency links and Polyjuice disguises and running and running and running, Draco has forgotten what it is like to have a safe harbor that isn’t a person. If there’s an art to fighting back, then they’ll find it hand in hand.
For Old Times’ Sake – T, 3k, achingly soft and bittersweet nostalgic little slice of life
Summary: On one such Thursday in the little shop at the very end of Hogsmeade, Harry’s slow perusal of the Food and Wine section of the Daily Prophet was rudely interrupted by the noisy chime of the bell on the door. Enter: Dr. Draco Malfoy, world-renowned Potioneer and long-time keeper of Harry's heart, holding a joint.
A Room Up There (And You In It) – T, 59k, slow-burn Christmas feels
Summary: When Preservationist Draco Malfoy was assigned to work on Number Twelve, Grimmauld Place, he was excited to delve into the gorgeous Black family antiques. His excitement quickly ended when something in the House decided it did not like his presence one bit. Featuring a grumpy antiques lover who most certainly did not sign up for this, encounters with a vengeful apparition, and a healthy application of Christmas spirit.
Siren Call (It’s Not Love) – E, 1k, gorgeous post-breakup getting back together boat sex Drarry
Summary: They were both too stubborn to lose the deposit on the stupid rental sailboat after the break-up, so now they're here in close quarters with one bunk.

Nevernight Part 7: The Inherent Eroticism of Wound-Tending, Reciprocated
Previous installments: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th
CW: this work implies that Meng Yao has a history of sexual trauma, though there’s nothing specific.
…………………………………………………………………..
The man's chambers were more spare than Meng Yao expected for someone of his stature. Unadorned walls, furnishings that were sturdy and well made and without ornament or excess.
The receiving area for guests stood out like a peacock preening in a monk's cell. Boldly colored and patterned silks draped the plush cushions. A set of ornate wine jugs and cups perched on a small table heavy with carved figures. A shelf displayed a series of what must have been gifts or combat trophies, for they were mostly as ill-suited to their owner as was their immediate surroundings.
Wen Zhuliu huffed out a breath quietly and gestured toward the luxurious area without looking at it. "Wen-er-gongzi visits sometimes. Mostly when he doesn’t want to be found. He prefers to have a quiet retreat designed to his tastes."
Meng Yao's eyes skated again over the opulent cushions and drapery. This was the decadence that the customer areas of his childhood home aspired to.
He swallowed.
Wen Zhuliu abruptly turned on his heel. His gaze speared Meng Yao for a heart-stopping moment. A minute furrow formed between his brows.
"Meng Yao," he said, voice low. "No one will hurt you here."
"Why not?"
Wen Zhuliu froze in confusion. Somehow it made him look less intimidating, more human.
Meng Yao resisted the urge to cover his traitorous mouth. Where had that come from? What was he thinking?
He couldn't retract the question now. Heat rose to his cheeks as his heart and his mind raced. "Why would I not be in danger around the Core-Melting Hand? You are a fearsome warrior in service to a sect known more for its might than its mercy."
The taller man pressed his lips together and lifted one shoulder in a slight shrug. "Believe what you want." He turned away and began to move toward a plain mahogany cabinet.
Meng Yao hesitated, then spoke quietly to his back. "I believe you are a good man."
Wen Zhuliu paused. He half-shrugged again and made a noncommittal "hm" before opening the cabinet and selecting salves and bandages from the shelves within.
Meng Yao's eyes were drawn again to the peacock-bower. Wen Zhuliu had seemed dismissive of its presence and the various possible implications. It caused him annoyance, not pain or shame or any sense of privacy invaded. Merely a place for the arrogant gongzi to hide from his troubles and obligations, then. Not… anything personal.
His attention caught on the curio display. A dagger's hilt appeared to be encrusted with gems chosen more for sparkle than value, while its blade looked brutally efficient. A fine box was intricately carved and inlaid with woods that would crack without regular oiling. An onyx and jasper Wen clan seal looked as heavy as obligation itself.
These were messages as much as gifts: that their recipient was greatly honored as long as he stayed within the bounds of his station. That his worth depended upon his service to his masters.
That he was, himself, a possession on display.
Wen Zhuliu was returning with a tray of supplies. He too glanced at the curio shelf. One eyebrow twitched. He said nothing, merely gestured with his chin and led Meng Yao to a much simpler alcove with two firm cushions and a table carved in clean curves of ebony.
"Where are your injuries, exactly?" Meng Yao asked, settling himself next to the other. "And what medicines do you have here?"
Wen Zhuliu recited a short list of wound sealants, blood cleansers, burn salves, and similar materials. Meng Yao tried to pay attention but while he spoke, the warrior began matter-of-factly to strip his robes to the waist. Meng Yao was grateful to be standing behind the man. He needed a moment to regain his composure.
Compact muscle corded Wen Zhuliu’s body in a way that recalled indecent memories of Mingjue. Scars marked his torso and arms with mementos of battles past, fewer of them than Meng Yao would have expected. This man certainly hadn’t preserved his skin by avoiding combat.
He must just be that skillful.
The whip-burn marks snaked across both of his shoulderblades, curled around the base of his throat, and lashed down the left side of his chest. The flesh over his breast was beginning to heal under what Meng Yao suspected was scrupulous application of salves and poultices. The long-ridged wounds that wrapped around his neck and upper back, though, were clearly much harder for him to reach on his own. They stood out dusky and swollen.
Wen Zhuliu finished arranging his opened robes around his waist and sat stiffly, not quite looking at Meng Yao. “I’ve been using the ointment in the red clay pot,” he said. “It seems to be the most effective.” His hands twitched on his lap.
The man was uncomfortable. He wasn’t accustomed to being… any of this, probably, before someone else.
Meng Yao dampened a cloth and began cleaning the burns in small careful movements. Whenever his cloth caught on a raw or scabbed edge of Wen Zhuliu's damaged skin, he flinched a little. It was too easy to imagine what those lean muscles could do if roused to anger. Something had hooked itself into his gut and drew him steadily, magnetically toward the man. That was frighteningly easy, also.
Wen Zhuliu sat impassive. Only his occasionally-restless hands and the stiffness of his jaw betrayed the pain of the process.
Heavens, Mingjue was just like this. How mortifying the thought that someone could see him weak.
Use it, said the analytical part of him. You need allies. Enduring bonds can be secured in vulnerable moments.
Before tonight, had he ever seen this man have a conversation that went beyond surface courtesies? Did he have anyone to truly talk to?
"What was Madam Yu like?" Meng Yao asked. (Vague guilt wormed through his stomach. It was good to offer support to someone who was hurting, he told himself. Incidental personal benefit didn’t matter.)
Wen Zhuliu silently clenched his hands in his lap while Meng Yao finished cleaning his burns and began gently to pat them dry. Meng Yao focused on tracing the contours of the man's wounds and listening for the unspoken things constrained within his posture. Those subjects were safe and appropriate and relevant.
The way the lamplight warmed his bare chest to honeyed umber was not appropriate to dwell on. Nor was the way his dark eyes gleamed like those of a night creature.
Focus. Meng Yao re-folded his cloth and applied the fresh surface to the still-seeping wounds across the breadth of Wen Zhuliu's upper back. There was a softness here that, somehow, Meng Yao had not expected. Sabers were heavy, and wielding them built layers of bulky muscle unlike the more sinewy builds of expert sword cultivators. Wen Zhuliu was neither. His own body was a more potent weapon than any made of steel. His uniqueness was carved in the dancer’s compact elegance of his musculature, the svelte curve of shoulderblade, the dense cords that shaped stomach and hips and converged to support his spine.
He was beautiful. Meng Yao touched him lightly for fear of hurting or displeasing him, but also for fear that the heat simmering low in his own body would flare and burn out his common sense.
Finally Wen Zhuliu’s broad shoulders dropped, just a little. “Xiandu called the prominent sect leaders to pay tribute when Wen-da-gongzi had his one-month celebration. Each sect's accommodations reflected Xiandu’s satisfaction with its obeisance. Jiang-zongshu quietly accepted their quarters. Madam Yu did not.” Meng Yao could hear the bittersweet smile in his tone. “She spoke a few sharp words to the steward in the central courtyard at midday. She hardly even raised her voice. There were five groups arriving at once, and every single person turned to listen to her.”
Meng Yao couldn’t help laughing. “It’s been my privilege to know a few women like that,” he commented. He caught his breath as he registered that that story had been more words than everything else Wen Zhuliu had said to him put together. He felt a surge of excitement, and of strange pride.
After a brief pause he asked, “What happened?”
Wen Zhuliu made a small satisfied sound. “The Yunmeng delegation were relocated to finer accommodations, with the steward’s apologies.”
Meng Yao rested one hand softly on the outer curve of Wen Zhuliu’s shoulder and shifted to smile at him. “She sounds like a woman who demanded the respect due to her.”
The moment’s light faded from Wen Zhuliu’s face. His gaze dropped. “She deserved better,” he said simply.
Silence spun taut between them.
The man’s shoulder was so warm and firm under Meng Yao's touch. He wanted to step away lest the impropriety offend. He wanted to remain, because if he moved he might break something too subtle and fragile for words.
He wanted to remain, because the intimacy felt good.
He stepped away.
“The red clay pot, you said?”
Wen Zhuliu handed the little pot up to him. Meng Yao dipped into the ointment and hesitated before starting to rub it into the welts wrapping over one broad shoulder.
He had hoped that beginning with the least sensitive area might help dispel… whatever had entangled them. He shouldn't want to dispel it. He should lean into it. This was exactly what he needed. But… he couldn't shake the feeling that he wasn't meant to see this, to be here.
After Wen Zhuliu had tended Meng Yao's own wounds, the man had turned away to give him privacy to dress.
It hardly mattered where Meng Yao began. He was massaging ointment into raw healing burns. If he wasn't careful he could cause significant pain or tear skin away like tissue paper. He had to work gingerly, in slow, unavoidably sensual strokes. Wen Zhuliu sat rigid, gaze fixed on his knotted hands, breathing controlled and steady.
"I'm sorry," Meng Yao murmured, pausing to take more ointment and assess his progress. "I'm trying to make this as easy as possible."
Wen Zhuliu grunted acknowledgement without moving.
He studied the burns spidering over the man's spine and neck and swallowed. "I'm going to have to get into the hollows under your shoulderblades and at the side of your throat. It... might go more smoothly if you're lying down. It's entirely your decision of course. But there's a lot of muscle tension, and those are delicate areas to reach, and…"
Wen Zhuliu somehow managed to stiffen further. The man was drawn tight enough to worsen his injuries, Meng Yao realized with chagrin.
"I can stop," he offered. "We can take a break. Or we can call this good enough."
Wen Zhuliu snorted and rose abruptly and moved toward a recessed alcove curtained with unadorned linen. "Do what you have to do." His voice was low. He met Meng Yao's gaze for an unreadable moment before turning away to part the bed-drapes and perch on the edge of the mattress.
The enormity of the situation called heat into Meng Yao's face and into… other places. Here was one of the most powerful men he had ever met, spoken of in fearful whispers among the great clans, stripped to the waist and waiting for Meng Yao to join him in his bed. Trusting Meng Yao to tend his wounded back.
His heart quickened with giddiness. His gut twisted in shame. Uncomfortably he wondered what Xichen would think of him now.
I'm doing it for Xichen, he told himself. This is how I survive here and get him the information he needs to make it through this war.
How noble of me, he thought wryly.
He went to Wen Zhuliu and guided the man to lie down on his stomach, arms bent. It was much easier to work on the more relaxed muscles. He even managed to remain focused, more or less, despite the vertigo and flame of this proximity.
He found himself recalling those long, anxious days of nursing a half-dead Xichen. Long nights of watching over him, and dribbling water between his lips whenever he woke, and praying to Guanyin for mercy and healing for this man who had brought mercy and healing to so many others.
The esteemed First Jade and the dreaded Core-Melting Hand could hardly be more different. Yet...
"Why are you doing this?" Wen Zhuliu broke into his thoughts.
For a disoriented, panicked breath he wasn't sure whose wounds he was tending. He recovered swiftly. "You were hurt."
Wen Zhuliu snorted. "And I'm a good man." He shifted. "I meant-- why Nevernight?"
The man was in the throne room when Meng Yao arrived and offered himself. He wanted something more than what Meng Yao had said about the other clans treating him poorly, and seeking a master to be loyal to who will appreciate him for his skills and knowledge.
He allowed his massaging fingers to still for a moment and sighed. “Where could I go? The Lan, with their moral purity? The Jiang, whose family is so enmeshed with the Jin? Xiandu may be harsh, but he seems to recognize a valuable retainer when he sees one, regardless of circumstances and prejudices.” He started working salve into the burn again, silently adding by his touch: like you. He knows your value.
Wen Zhuliu did not answer.
Meng Yao curled his fingers under the sweep of his shoulderblades. He could see Wen Zhuliu’s jaw clench where his face was half-turned away on the coverlet, but his back remained still and relaxed, rising and falling with controlled waves of breath. The man shuddered, once, when Meng Yao began to touch the sensitive skin between scapula and spine.
“Almost done,” Meng Yao murmured. The other man swallowed and inclined his head in the slightest nod.
He massaged his way upward now, following a fine ridge of half-scarred flesh that traversed the plane of one shoulderblade and became an angry welt where Zidian had clearly whipped around the side of his neck to catch at his collarbone. Meng Yao swallowed hard as his careful fingers approached the hollow where Wen Zhuliu’s neck and shoulder joined. It was possible, at least, for them to act as though a man’s back was neutral territory and that exploring it inch by inch was merely medical care. The base of a man’s throat, though…. that was for lovers’ lips and assassins’ knives.
The skin was tender and warm. Wen Zhuliu's pulse throbbed a drumbeat beneath his fingertips.
Wen Zhuliu caught his breath and held it, huffed it out, caught it again.
Meng Yao felt his own body shiver in exquisite awareness of the other. He shifted to create a more generous fall of robes shielding his lap.
And then it was finished. He brushed Wen Zhuliu's hair back from his face to permit a clearer view. Yes. Done, and done well.
His fingers lingered amidst the dark strands.
In one abrupt, fluid motion, Wen Zhuliu twisted  and sat up. He grasped Meng Yao’s wrist. His eyes burned with dark and silent things.
That dark fire seared through Meng Yao, scalp to groin to toes. He should pull away. He should say something. He should leave.
He didn't.
Wen Zhuliu released him and turned away. Meng Yao drew a deep shaky breath.
"You shouldn't have come," Wen  Zhuliu said. "This is a dangerous place."
Meng Yao smiled softly. "When have I known anything else?"
They sat together for another electric moment beyond time.
"I'll walk you back to your quarters," Wen Zhuliu said.

Specter of Torment and King of Cards Timeline, explained
EDIT: The following post has been disproved by Word of God from Yacht Club Games. See the following post for more information.
The rest of the post is below for posterity’s sake, but please know this fact before reading it.
The first time I played King of Cards, the timeline of the game baffled me. Did this take place after Specter of Torment? Before? Even after completing the game, the minute details didn't seem to easily line up. So I did some digging into the inner mechanisms of Shovelverse lore, and I think I've pieced together the chronological course of events.
I’ve posted it here for your viewing pleasure, complete with outgoing links and screenshots to aid legibility. Please let me know if I missed anything!
So, for starters: which game happens first?
Chronologically, the first events in the Shovelverse are those of Specter of Torment's flashback scenes.
Tumblr media
These events predate the mainline events of all five games-- Shovel of Hope (SoH), Plague of Shadows (PoS), Specter of Torment (SoT), King of Cards (KoC), and Showdown.
After that, SoT has its intro cutscene and moves into the main plot, starting with the Plains of Passage, where Specter Knight tries and fails to recruit Black Knight.
After that, the game offers an open stage select screen where the player can choose to recruit the knights in any order.
Tumblr media
This is all fine and good for Specter of Torment, but King of Cards reveals that there is in fact a canon order to these fights.
In one of KoC's early stages, King Knight fights Specter Knight, and Specter Knight uses certain magical items during the fight. These are called Curios in SoT, and there's a particular order to which they can be obtained, as detailed by the Fan Wiki.
Tumblr media
A list of the Curios that Specter Knight uses in this first KoC fight can be found in a walkthrough here. They are as follows:
---Dread Talon (found after completing the Plains of Passage in SoT) ---Spider Scythes (found after completing the Stranded Ship) ---Bounding Orbs (found after completing the Explodatorium) ---Skeleton Sentry (found after completing the Lich Yard)
As such, we can deduce that by the time King Knight fights Specter for the first time in KoC, Specter has recruited two knights and attempted to recruit two more.
This is confirmed by the fact that over the course of SoT, various landmarks in the distance will light up as Specter recruits their corresponding knights, including the Lich Yard (the columned building at the top of the hill on the left). Take a look at the comparison between the beginning and end of the game:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In King of Cards, we can see that the Lich Yard area is already lit even before King Knight fights Specter Knight. (Or it's a graphical coincidence, but at least the art assets don't outright disprove this theory)
Tumblr media
Then King Knight gets into a series of shenanigans, eventually fighting Specter Knight a second time later in the story.
For this fight, Specter Knight has added a few new Curios, which you can read about here, to his arsenal, plus a surprise appearance of his SoH/PoS boss form.
In addition to the curios he used in the first fight, he now also has the ability to use the following:
--Throwing Sickles  (Plains of Passage) --Judgment Rush (Flying Machine)
Throwing Sickles are available anytime after the Plains of Passage, which is no surprise since that's the first location Specter visits. But Judgment Rush's presence here indicates that Specter recruited Propeller Knight next.
After this, we can surmise that Specter Knight recruited Mole Knight and Tinker Knight, since both appear in KoC's ending, bound for the Tower of Fate. Given Tinker Knight's KoC preoccupation with avoiding his tinkerbots until after King Knight finds him, perhaps he was recruited second, but anything beyond that is likely pure speculation.
By the end of King of Cards, Specter Knight has gone on seven out of nine recruitment missions, and successfully recruited five knights (Polar, Plague, Propeller, Mole, and Tinker).
One detail that trips up many fans is that of Baz's armor, which bears mentioning here.
Baz is one of the Wandering Travellers in the Shovelverse, and appears multiple times throughout the Treasure Trove games. At the end of King of Cards, he can be seen obtaining* new armor, which we see him wearing in his SoH/PoS encounters. It's notable that he has this same armor in his SoT encounter as well-- this helps us narrow down the timeline substantially.
Tumblr media
*(it's revealed in Showdown that he in fact stole the armor from Mr. Hat, much to the latter's consternation, but that's beside the point)
Baz appears when Specter is about to embark on his eighth recruitment mission, and as of the end of KoC (minus the final The End cutscene, which I'll talk about later), that's exactly where Specter's at. That leaves just enough time for him to get the armor at the end of KoC and head directly for the Tower of Fate in time for this cutscene. The timelines actually line up very closely.
So the mainline events of KoC are over at this point. After that, Specter recruits Treasure and King (and it must be noted that during King Knight's fight, he never actually offers to recruit King Knight, since that occurs at the end of KoC-- Specter is merely there to "set him back on schedule," and even outright mentions "our leader," the Enchantress).
With all nine recruitment missions complete, Specter then learns a startling revelation about the Enchantress, and sets off to fight her. This sets the scene for Showdown and the many small interactions that happen inside it. Then SoT's ending happens, with all that entails.
Some amount of time passes after SoT's ending-- long enough for King Knight to paint the castle gold and destroy all the Joustus cards in the land. Then Shovel of Hope begins, Shovel Knight goes about the early parts of his journey, and then he meets King Knight in Pridemoor Keep, thus concluding the events of King of Cards.
In conclusion, Specter of Torment starts first, King of Cards ends last, and the two happen roughly concurrently in the middle.

Masterlist & Chapter 1
Chapter 3
Cleveland, Ohio
Spike and Andrew arrived in Cleveland shortly before sunup, much to Spike's relief. Andrew was a bit of an erratic driver and if Spike wasn't already dead, he might have bothered to fear for his life. He had never been to Cleveland before. Never had a reason to. Sure there was a hellmouth, but why would anyone choose it over California? Ohio was a flyover state for a reason. What'd they even have in Ohio? Corn?
Andrew parked the car outside of what looked to be an abandoned warehouse in the industrial district on the outskirts of the city. The windows were all dark and Spike couldn't hear or see a soul around. There was a faint scent of iron in the air that smelled almost like blood, but Spike could tell it was actually emanating from the slowly corroding metal walls of the warehouse. Unlike Spike, the building wasn't timeless. He raised an eyebrow at Andrew, but the eccentric Watcher-in-training was already jumping out of the car. Spike followed after him, only hesitating for a moment. Could barely be called hesitation really. Just... taking a breath. That he didn't really need. Bugger it. It's not like Andrew noticed.
"If I didn't know any better, I'd say you were trying to off me," Spike commented as he looked over at the group of motionless cranes dangling equipment that likely violated several OSHA regulations.
Andrew laughed with a grating kind of chortle that for a second brought Spike back to a different time. At Buffy's house, back when they were still at war with The First. He waved off the memory. No point in getting all sentimental. What's done is done and over.
"No silly," Andrew replied. "This is where Willow said to meet."
"Nice digs. Perfect spot for a demon."
Andrew rolled his eyes at the quip and opened the rusting metal door, motioning for Spike to enter. Spike eyed the door, surprised it hadn't crashed down off its tracks.
"Alright then," Spike said as he walked into the darkness. No point in arguing.
Inside, the warehouse was completely empty except for the heavy coating of dirt covering the spalling concrete floor...and a strange rectangular pool of what looked like liquid silver situated at its center. Andrew's footsteps echoed behind him in the cavernous space as Spike moved to get a better look at the curious centerpiece. Despite the lack of light, the silver pool seemed to shimmer and emitted a faint glow. Probably radiation. Spike took a couple of steps back from the man-sized pool.
"Now hold up a minute," he said, turning on Andrew. "Pretty sure the mercury baths went out of style." He held a finger up for emphasis. "And, if memory serves, Xander was the one with the syphilis problem."
Andrew ignored him and walked to the edge of the pool. "It's a portal. You coming or are you just gonna stand there?"
With that, Andrew stepped off the ledge and disappeared beneath the surface of silver. Spike stared after him.
"Right, quick trip to hell. Was getting bored anyway. Well, if that git can do it," Spike muttered.
He ran after him and leapt into the pool. For some reason he had expected it to burn, like molten lava. Instead, he felt absolutely nothing, not even as his head sunk under the waves. And then everything was unnaturally bright.
Spike winced away before realizing it wasn't the sun, just orbs of floating white light scattered throughout the sizable room. He recognized the type. This was a magic shop. A multi-dimensional magic shop.
The shop was quiet despite its size and selection. Spike recognized more than a few rare items that would fetch quite the price on the black market... if one was into that sort of thing. The shelves were fully stocked with spell books, grimoires, various herbs, crystals, and other magical curios. It made the old Sunnydale magic shop look like the kiddie leagues.
Sitting at a long oval table in the center of the room was Willow, dressed in clothes that looked a day old with a cold cup of coffee sitting next to her. The red-headed witch was surrounded by books scattered around her on both the table and the floor. She didn't even look up at their arrival. It seemed that - apart from Spike and Andrew - she was the only one in the shop.
"Hey Willow," Andrew said, giving her a little wave. "I got Spike."
Willow looked up from a particularly thick tome covered in a language Spike didn't recognize. She gave a small smile that did nothing to hide the worry on her face or the exhaustion in her eyes.
"Hey guys," she said. "Good to have you on the team."
"Any luck so far?" Andrew asked.
Willow shook her head. "Nothing. There's nothing about mass memory loss in slayers. Of course, there have never been multiple slayers before so. You know, we're back in uncharted territory."
Spike cut in hesitantly, "And Buffy?"
He thought he caught an odd expression cross Willow's face, but it had been a while since he'd seen her. Maybe it was normal.
"I still haven't been able to reach her," Willow replied. "I just got here last night. Called in a favor to a friend and got us a lease on this magic shop 'til we figure out what's going on. I'm hoping Giles will know more."
"Well we should go check on her then!" Spike said, throwing up a hand. "Slayer wandering around out of her head? It's a death sentence."
Willow pursed her lips and glanced over at Andrew uneasily. "We can't. Or...well we're not sure we should. It's not just memory loss."
She paused and Spike began to get more and more agitated. There was something they hadn't been telling him. Something bad.
"During the blackouts," Willow continued, "you know, the times they can't remember? Well, we think that there's someone...else. Someone else is controlling their actions, it's almost like they're possessed. But whatever is doing it-"
"It's a scary good copy," Andrew blurted out.
Willow nodded. "It knows about their lives, how they act, their friends. It even goes on doing the regular day-to-day slayage duties. But we've noticed some things are just a bit...off."
"What do you mean, off?" Spike pressed.
"Well...one of 'em did try killing Angel a few days back," Andrew replied. "They had been working together temporarily and apparently she just snapped one day."
"Well I don't see the problem there," Spike said with a grin.
"Another one didn't recognize her parents when they came for a visit," Willow added. "She hadn't seen them since becoming a slayer and just nothing. Freaked them right out. But she remembered everyone else, insisted they weren't her family though."
"Okay, yeah, a bit odd," Spike conceded.
"And then, two days ago, Giles was training with one of the London slayers when her fighting style switched from streetfighter novice to jujitsu master in the span of a minute." Willow sighed. "And that's when I did a revealing spell. There were was something in her that wasn't her. We don't even know when we're talking with the real person...or the other. Whatever it is."
"And that's why you haven't contacted Buffy," Spike stated.
Willow nodded. "We don't want to spook...it."
"Yeah who knows, it could run off to Timbuktu with Buffy's body," Andrew agreed with a vigorous nod.
"Andrew, could you get me some cannis root from the back storage?" Willow asked him. "I need to do a translation spell."
"Sure, of course!" Andrew replied as he scampered off behind the rows of shelves.
Spike pulled out a chair and took a seat next to Willow at the table without speaking.
"It's good to see you, Spike," Willow said without smiling. "I just wish you would've told us before disaster struck again."
"Yeah." He nodded slowly. "Well, being back in the land of the living has been one should've after another I suppose." He fumbled the pack of cigarettes from his pocket and lit one up with a flick from his lighter. "Do you think-"
"I don't know if she'll be glad to see you," Willow said, answering the unspoken question. "I don't know."
"Right."
Spike sighed as he exhaled a cloud of smoke. Andrew returned with a large jar of what looked like...well, roots. Willow took it from him and set the jar aside without opening it. It seemed the cannis root had just been a task to keep Andrew busy. Spike wasn't surprised. Andrew took a seat at the table and began perusing through some of the scattered books. Spike watched as the two continued their research. It wasn't really his forte.
What felt like hours later - though he knew it had only been minutes - Spike heard the sound of footsteps behind him. Familiar tread. Instant irritation. Bollocks.
"No. Oh, no. No, no, no, no. No way. What the hell is he doing here?" Xander exclaimed as he squinted in the light.
