The reincarnated villainess cannot escape from the demon king's obsession - By 朝凪りん 朝凪りん (6/10)
Tumblr media
This one is seriously frustrating. An author reincarnates into her own novel. Everything is different. There's a demon king, and she wasn't a fantasy writer. She wrote historic drama. She's so dumb that it makes the story less enjoyable. The yandere is good.
Elisa wrote a sweet but dramatic tale about an evil illegitimate daughter, and a pure true daughter destined to return and take the crown.
Tumblr media
She lies down and relaxes. All is well. She reincarnates before the main character, Iris, is impregnated by the prince. That's when Elisa starts doing horrible, illegal things to ruin her sister's perfect future. Elisa was never kind, but she leaves Iris be to be wooed by the prince.
Tumblr media
It's all very sweet? Elisa wrote this novel...she should know her fate better than anyone. Iris has true love. Their father favors only her. The prince pushes every bully off of her flowery path. Elisa was always a poor replacement for the real daughter too. It's clear that they intend to get rid of her. Elisa became a villainess in an attempt to survive and get power. The original author KNOWS this but she thinks hiding in her room will solve everything.......she doesn't even make any alliances.
Tumblr media
Idiot author reincarnator even cries at their wedding, like a fool. Completely oblivious to the fact that she's standing alone at the biggest social event of the season. She's of age, but she doesn't even have a date or a suitor. While Iris is literally in the royal family. It's politics 101. Elisa is CLEARLY being pushed out. One sister marrying, and one not even being considered by anyone, is kind of a big deal in a historic setting.
Tumblr media
There's a Demon King running around.
Her memory is fuzzy.
She knows she died.
She doesn't remember how though, and the Demon King isn't trying to take over. He has the country gripped in fear, because nobody knows what he wants.
Tumblr media
The obvious plot twist happens right after the wedding. Elisa has stained the honor of her family (she's an adopted daughter they no longer need) so she must marry a corrupt man. By the way its clear they've always despised her. They give her to a man that likes to beat women.
Tumblr media
She's so dumb its unbelievable. She protests for 5 seconds, but then she remembers Elisa was a big fat meanie pants.
....maybe that means she deserves to get tortured???
Huh??.?
Did you forget you're the author???
You are not Elisa, and you are not responsible for her actions. You didn’t interfere with the royal wedding at all this time, so they're clearly being cruel because you've lost the power you once had. Elisa's villainy was the only way to survive in a pit of vipers that didn’t want her around. She's kind of the victim if you think about it for two seconds, but you wanna suffer forever because you were born in her sinful body...
...
...
I can't even...
Tumblr media
Demon King Noah saves her from her constant idiocy. The truth begins to become clear. Her soul is connected to his. He dragged her into this world somehow, and he changed it to make it their ideal world. In the human world he was actually a small child, and the author was his other half. The age difference made being with her impossible so bang. New world. Is this world even real? Is Noah powerful enough to make a peaceful fantasy land exactly like her book?????
That would be incredible, but the author is dumb as a brick. A stump. Hey. Romance authors. Self insert crap ruins almost everything it touches. Please stop. Nobody wants to watch a brain dead doll get plowed. I would much rather see a terrified reincarnator run away in the middle of the night. She escapes to a border town. It shakes like a mirage. The whole world is a mirage. Noah appears and says he's been looking for her, and he made a world just for them....
But nooooooooooooooooooooooo erotica has to be dumb.
Tumblr media
I'm most likely right about the child version of him luring her to her death. That's still cool, but she's supposed to be the author of this story. Any published author with a working brain would question what's happening. They'd be creeped out. They would explore. You can keep the page count the same too. It wouldn't be hard to remove all the dumb lines and replace them with her being suspicious of the other "humans", who don't quite feel real.
Tumblr media
Wasted potential.
Squandered potential.
Boo.
I'm booing in the stands.
Don't marry a r****** just cuz your abusive not father tells you to.
Blah.

Finally, I can write again!
This is how I visualize the final scene went down. A mix of both the 1988 movie and the musical.
~~~~~~
"Say hi to God."
Kaboom
Veronica, with a cigarette between her fingers and a sprained ankle, made her way through the school hallway as the other students ran past her to see where the explosion came from.
She contemplated.
She feels nothing.
Is she happy that four people had to fucking die? Absolutely not.
But...
When she looks at who are dead, Heather Chandler, Kurt Kelly, Ram Sweeney, Jason Dean...
Honestly she only feels bad for Heather. Because as much of a bitch as she was, she had her good moments. Moments that made her seem slightly human.
Kurt and Ram, she doesn't care. Those two were rapists. She doesn't like that she pulled the trigger, but Kurt and Ram being dead meant nothing to her.
As for JD....
She hopes he sees his mother. She hopes his father grows a brain and realizes his son is gone because he was never a father to him.
But as for him literally exploding in front of her...
She feels nothing.
She can only mourn that JD she first met, the lost boy who wanted his mother and was sweet, kind, a gentleman, and caring. Not the one that died in front of her.
The crowds moved past her, Veronica is too tired to even care that no one is asking what happened to her, why she looks disheveled and has blood running down her head.
Well,
Someone did say something.
"Veronica." Heather Duke called her, in all red. Veronica can't deny that she looks good in it, but still, she hates her in it. "You look like hell." Heather Duke moved closer to her, as if to inspect her. Veronica notices the slight concern in her eyes, and how she seems to be holding back her hands from reaching out to Veronica.
Veronica hates that last detail. Heather used to always reach out to her.
"Yeah?" Veronica chuckles. "I just got back."
Then, another voice calls her. "Veronica!"
Veronica and Heather Duke turn around to see Heather McNamara running to them. "Where have you been?!"
Heather Mac looks worried. Like, really really worried. "Miss Flemming told us you killed yourself." Heather Mac actually reaches out to her, inspecting her injuries, before she rests her hands on Veronica's face.
Veronica doesn't even hide how she leans into the touch.
She then sees the red fucking scrunchie and snaps back to where she is.
Veronica moves closer to Heather Duke and turns her around to take that damn thing off her.
"Veronica, what are you doing?" Heather Duke asks.
The students who were originally going to run past them stops in their tracks when they see Veronica with the scrunchie.
She wears it on her wrist and raises it up.
Time to actually do something.
"Listen up folks, war is over. Brand new sheriff's come to town." Veronica knows she sounds tired, but fuck that. "We are done with acting evil, we will lay out weapons down." She ties her hair with the scrunchie.
Everyone is watching her.
Good.
"We're all damaged, we're all frightened, we're all freaks. But that's alright. We'll endure it, we'll survive it-" Veronica pauses slightly when she sees Betty and Martha by the crowd. She calls them. "Martha, Betty."
They both turn to look at her, clearly resisting the urge to move. Veronica takes a deep breath. "Are you free tonight?"
Martha and Betty look at each other, before turning back to Veronica. They actually move forward this time.
It was silent for a while.
"What?" Martha breaks the silence.
"Uh, my date to pep rally blew-"
Accidental slip
"-me off..."
That's better
"So I was wondering if you guys weren't doing anything tonight we could pop some jiffy pop? Rent a video?" Veronica can hear how hopeful she sounds.
She doesn't have the right to be hopeful after what she did, but she still is.
"Something with a happy ending." She finishes. Veronica really wants a happy ending right now.
"Are there any happy endings?" Martha asks. Gosh, she sounds so tired. Betty isn't even looking at her in the eye.
Veronica looks at everyone around them and sighs. She turns back to her--hopefully still best friends. "I can't promise no more Heathers, high school may not ever end." She steps closer. "Still I miss you, I'd be honored-" She swallows. "If you'd let me be your friend."
"My friend." Martha says, as she takes Veronica by the hand and pulls her into a hug.
"We can be seventeen. We can learn how to chill." Veronica feels tears form in her eyes as Martha joins her. "If no one-"
Then, Betty joins them. "-loves me now, someday somebody will." She finally meets Veronica's gaze. "We can be seventeen. Still time to make things right. One day we'll change the world, but let's kick back tonight."
This time, it's Veronica who reaches out her to Heather Duke and Heather Mac.
Heather Mac immediately grabs her hand. "Let's go be seventeen. Take off our clothes and dance."
Veronica walks, well, limps, towards Heather Duke and reaches out, a silent plea in her eyes. Heather Duke hesitantly takes her hand, and once she has fully held it, Veronica pulls her into a hug.
Heather Duke puts one hand on Veronica's back, lightly returning the hug. But she grips onto Veronica's jacket as if it's a lifeline.
Veronica sighed. She really missed her. She didn't like what the scrunchie turned her into.
But holy shit, did she missed her.
"Act like we're all still kids, cause this could be our final chance."
Veronica smiles as she sees Betty, Martha, Heather M, and Heather D all try to be nice to each other.
Maybe they can all be friends.
Now everyone is joining them.
"Always be seventeen
Celebrate you and I
maybe we won't grow old.
And maybe then we'll never die."
Veronica feels happy. Genuinely, happy.
She missed that.
"We'll make it beautiful."
Veronica swears she hears Heather Chandler's voice.
"We'll make it beautiful.
Beautiful
Beautiful
Beautiful
Beautiful
Beautiful
Beautiful
Beautiful
Beautiful"
This really feels like a win for Veronica.
minecraft-sinfonia family in the Star Wars au, because brain worms never sleep
Chayanne is hardly a toddler in the crèche when the Jedi temple falls and the Empire is born. Phil saves him, cares for him, raises him as his own on a homestead after meeting Missa, far from the core worlds. He grows up learning to farm, to cook, to find his own resources and how to make do with what you have. He has no idea where he’s from - his records were sealed in a holocron along with the other younglings his age, and who knows where that is now. Not that it matters all that much to him - his family are his parents who have raised him, and later his sister.
Tallulah is also force sensitive, but was never picked up by the Jedi. She knows where she’s from - an outer rim dustball of a planet where she had no one but the other street kids, where they all had to eat dirt. According to Wilbur, who picked her up and took her in, she had been crying in the rubble in an ally, where a building had managed to collapse sideways into, somehow entirely unscathed, the only survivor. Now that she’s older, and has an understanding of her powers, she can guess she had used the force in some sort of subconscious survival instinct. She spent a good year or two with her father, before she had been dropped off during a visit to her “abuelo Phil”, and never picked back up. It’s another year before she starts calling Phil her Pa instead.
For a year after the fall of the Jedi, Phil travels with Wilbur, and tries to take care of a very young Chayanne as best as he can. He tries to make it easy on Wil as he can, but he know it can’t be simple, traveling with an ex-Jedi on the run and a force sensitive toddler who makes all the noise a toddler does. Whatever guilt he has is buried under the knowledge that this is safest. Staying in the wind, between the stars, without making a name or life for himself, is necessary until the panic around the Jedi dies down.
Phil meets Missa shortly after he parts ways with Wilbur, on some forgettable, relatively mild planet on the edges of the mid rim, in a town full of farmers and workers. He’s clearly lost, and exhausted, and struggling to find something he can afford to feed the hungry child in his arms, and Missa may not have much but for this he has a few credits to spare, and well - he just can’t ignore that feeling, tugging in his gut and wrapping around his chest, that’s pulling him towards the two strangers. Kindness has him buying them a meal and offering his home to them for the night, and when Phil asks if they can stay for just a while, to figure out where to go next, he says yes before he even processes the question. A little foolish, maybe, given the state of the galaxy, but Phil would be lost without that kindness.
Phil makes himself useful helping around the farm, feeding the growzers and nerfs, pulling weeds, planting new crops, at least when Chayanne doesn’t demand attention. Missa works as he always does, keeps them all fed, and looks up all the articles he can find about childcare - and then double checks with a few parents when they drop into town for market, because surely Chayanne isnt old enough to be eating full carrots yet, his teeth are just so small - that’s when he realizes he’s far more open to Phil and Chayanne staying around than he thought he was. It isn’t much longer until Phil comes to a similar conclusion, during a dinner like any other night before, where Missa had taken care to cut Chayanne’s carrots and had made a pot of tea that was Phil’s favorite (one he got based on a hunch back in town a few days prior), and he realizes that he doesn’t want to lose this. That he wants to stay.
After he finds that Missa himself is also force sensitive, and he comes clean about who he actually is, their life continues on without the idea that this just a temporary set up. They get officially married just before Tallulah comes into the picture, which gives Phil an official new identity to the Empire, from a legal standpoint.
Chayanne and Tallulah both grow up learning Jedi techniques to balance their connection with the force. They learn early on the extent of their powers and how to meditate. The better trained you are, and the more you know of your own powers, the better you can master self control - that’s what their dads say, at least. While Phil had been anxious when Tallulah first arrived - wondering if them knowing their powers would make them all more obvious to those hunting for them - it’s cemented when Chayanne uses the force in the market, floating a fruit from a street vendor towards him when he couldn’t reach it himself. They were extremely lucky he wasn’t noticed. Chayanne, with enough core memories in the temple, where using the force and connecting wasn’t only second nature, but was encouraged all around him, would only struggle if they pretended anything different. Besides - as much as they have to keep themselves hidden and safe from the Empire, the force was something to celebrate. They were never taught that their gifts were anything but special - it wasn’t them that was wrong, but the Empire for hunting them.
After their home is raided, and the kids go with Phil to the rebellion, separated from Missa, is when they learn to fight. Chayanne is extremely disappointed he can’t actually train to learn how to wield his dads lightsaber. Tallulah leans less into physical training, and gets a better handle at using the force to interact with the world. She learns a technique to help plants grow just a little faster, and a little stronger, and likes to help around the gardens and greenhouses. It makes Phil a little sad, but only sometimes - she would have loved the Room of a Thousand Fountains, had this universe been kinder.
When Missa manages to find them again, worn and weary and somehow with Phil’s lightsaber still intact and all his limbs attached, he joins the rebels cause and fights with his family. Phil insists Missa keeps his lightsaber on him, pretending like it isn’t as big of a deal as it is, saying he’s grown used to fighting without it - but Missa knows better. A lightsaber is a Jedi’s life, their being connected to their crystal that gives it power, the weapon an extension of themselves. He understands the significance, of Phil’s life humming in his hands, protecting him above all else. There’s an immense amount of love, of trust, in the decision. It makes Phil a terrible Jedi - giving up his saber by choice, for a familial attachment he should never have made in the first place. But who gives a fuck - the temple has long been gone, the Jedi and all their believers dead with it, and Missa is here in front of him, alive, unlike the fucking Jedi council, the merry band of hypocrites. He’d like to keep it that way.
Chayanne still gets Phil to train him with the lightsaber, and it’s the coolest thing ever of all time.
Part 37
Her Life Means Everything
@mrs-fanfiction-2001 @the-big-bad-klaus @queenieala @samsgirl93
As I stood in front of the gates of the Salvatore school next to me my husband Klaus , I signed. It has been two long years since I laid eyes on my daughters and was nervous to see them again."What will I say to them.... will they be angry at me " my thoughts keep washing over me until Klaus pulled me out of them.
"Love, everything will be fine, " Klaus reassured me.
Glaring towards my husband I wanted to believe him but we haven't been back in town long. Two years is a long time away from our daughters "Nik, we got back into town and we literally met that Landon guy who clearly has a crush on one of our daughters. I just don't want to miss anything else big in their lives."
"Maddie, If you don't like the boy I will gladly rip out his heart." He smirked, draping an arm over my shoulder.
"Nik don't you dare " I warned, staring at him sternly.
"I won't rip out his heart...for now." He rolls his eyes listening to my wish as his soulmate.
Driving through the opened gate we pulled the car up getting out of the passenger seat. Ric's jeep sitting in front of the doors before I recognized the Landon guy getting out of the car with another boy. Hope follows them towards the doorway eyeing the Saltzman twins. "Morning girls." She greeted them.
"Welcome to the Salvatore school. We're your tour guides. I'm Lizzie. " Lizzie smiled, eyeing her sister.
"I'm Josie. Twins." She replied. "Hi aunt Maddie, Uncle Klaus."
He waved leaning against the car towards the siphon twins. "Little Siphon. Where's Nikola?"
Lizzie rolls her eyes avoiding my gaze. "Probably following my father like a lost puppy."
The front door of the school opens with Alaric walking outside smiling between our group. "Let's get started everyone." He entered the school where I turned my focus back to my husband smiling.
"Let's go find our daughter. You can pick up her wolf scent." I questioned knowing her and Hope we're both born with the wolf gene from him. He nodded, intertwining my hand with hers vamping us into the woods behind the school. Walking down the trail I found Nikola sitting on a rock drawing something in a notebook exactly like her father.
"What are you drawing there, Nikola?" I asked, crossing my arms over my chest.
She lifted her head up smiling at us. "Hi mom, dad. Nothing in particular. I just needed to get away. And before you ask, Landon and I just shared a dance but that's it."
"I didn't approve of that-" Klaus started to interpret until I lightly elbowed him in the rib glaring at me softly.
Nikola closed her sketchbook sitting it on her lap staring up at us. "So how was your trip. Have you gone to England yet?"
Tucking hair behind my ear I shake my head softly. She was slightly paranoid about things so she must have listened in on my phone conversations with my twin sister. "Little noisy girl. It's on our list of places but I thought I needed time with my girls."
"I've missed you guys. I always do." She replied, getting to her feet walking forward hugging me.
Klaus rests a hand on my shoulder smiling at two of his girls gesturing his head in the direction of the woods. "I'm gonna go for a run. You two should go have fun. I'll see you later." He kisses my cheek vamping off quickly.
"I think we should go for drinks. How about you sweetheart?" I lightly smirked, intertwining my hand with hers vamping us into the town square. She covers her mouth holding back the urge to throw up reminding me how it felt to be vamped around by Nik long ago. Where I would almost puke the first few times.
Walking through the town I handed her an ice cream and we sat down eating right before I heard someone chuckling about something. "Look at the hot blonde with the boarding school girl. Wonder what it would be like to date her." Whipping my head around I saw a high schooler wearing a football jacket smirking towards his other guy friends watching us.
Rolling my eyes I forgot sometimes that I still appeared to be seventeen years old even though I married and have two kids. "Don't engage mom. They're not worth it." Nikola warned me by licking her chocolate cone.
"If you say so...so is there anything new going on in your life. Besides this Landon guy. He seems nice in my opinion." I changed the subject trying to block out the jocks talking behind us. I have gotten better about not wanting to drain the blood of every human I come across but these seemed to deserve it.
Nikola twirled part of her hair in between her fingers sighing. "Hope told me something yesterday and I don't know what dad or you will do if you find out. I'm cool with it but I'm not you." She leans back in her chair, throwing her head back. "I mean obviously you handle changes fine considering all the books in the library of the school label dad as the villain. Whereas you see him as the perfect guy who won your heart - mom are you alright?"
I didn't realize that I had turned my head back towards the jocks. I felt my fangs and veins underneath my eyes already appearing from the drive for blood. "She's so hot."
The jock smirked before I got up walking over him twirling my hair in an attempt at flirting. "Hey boys, I'm Maddie. Which one of you was talking about me because I'm in the mood for a drink."
"Me sweetheart." The guy with blonde hair replied. "I'm Conor."
Resting a hand on his shoulder I tugged him inside the store heading to the very back ignoring the looks from the workers in the ice cream shop. Shoving him against the wall he gasped almost screaming when I revealed my fangs. My heart is beating against my chest if it still could at this moment. "Don't scream, Connor." He fell silent as I plunged my fangs into his neck gulping down his sweet blood. Gripping the red sleeves of his jacket his body began to fall limp until someone pulled me back.
"What the hell!" I cursed vamping towards whoever it was until suddenly pain shot through my head. Grabbing my head in agony my hair fell in front of my eyes with me almost on my knees. Shooting my gaze upwards I saw Nikola raising her left hand with a weak look using magic on me. "Nikola!"
Conor dropped to the ground still bleeding from his neck as footsteps entered the room. Holding my head the pain from the spell was fading watching my husband bit into his wrist healing the human and sending him on his way. "I'm sorry you had to see your mother like this honey. I thought we had handled it years ago."
"You ratted me out to my own husband?" I scoffed feeling embarrassed like I was a ten year old who got caught stealing a cookie before dinner or something so silly.
Nikola lowered her hand, getting a phone call and leaving the room. Nik offers his hands helping me up from the floor. Dropping my gaze from his, he tilted my chin up with his thumb. "Maddie, we have to set good examples for our girls. I know it's hard. Resisting the natural urge of blood but-"
"This was different, Nik. Conor was the ass that messed with Landon. I was simply teaching him a lesson...and getting a snack at the same time." I tried to defend myself to him.
He rested his other hand on my shoulder gently giving it a squeeze. "That being said we can't just release our urge in the middle of the day. The locals may not believe everything is the cause of an animal attack anymore."
I started to reply back until Nikola came back into the room flustered over something. "I just got off the phone with Dr. Saltzman and Hope. They said Landon stole something from the school and he can't be compelled."
Klaus and I both turned to face our eldest daughter. "Is he on Vervain?" My husband asked the most simple question, knowing a solution.
"They tried draining any from his system. But...there wasn't any." She trailed off.
Shifting my gaze between my husband and child there could only be one other explanation to why he couldn't be compelled by a vampire. "Then what kind of supernatural is he exactly?" Nikola just stared at me with no reply at all.
Comments really appreciated ❤️
Send me ideas you'd like to see of Maddie and Klaus or Hope and Nikola so I'm not just writing the normal Legacies storyline.
A Spy Revealed
How to write this has been plaguing my mind for a while now. I have several ideas with varying levels of interest. This is one of them, which I’m somewhat content with. I might revoke this version as canon if I write something better.
—————
Pearl is organizing the file cabinets when Cub walks up to her, expression grim. “What wrong?” She asks immediately.
Cub hesitates a moment before speaking, “I think Grian is infected.”
A chill goes down her spine, barely breathing out, “really?”
He nods, “yeah, I became suspicious a while ago, and I’ve been looking into it since.”
“How certain are you?”
“Almost completely.”
“What should we do?” Pearl whispers, still in shock.
“There is a way to confirm it, which only you will be able to pull off. Although it isn’t a pleasant one.”
She swallows nervously, “what is it?”
“The solution that we’ve been testing for a cure, it burns upon skin contact with them. If you get even some on him, we’ll get our answer.”
“I don’t want to hurt him.”
“It’s the only surefire way to tell, he’s been lying to us for this long, confronting him could very well make things worse.” Cub pauses, “I don’t want to hurt him either, he’s my friend. But if he’s infected… we need to know as soon as possible in order to save him.”
Pearl slowly nods, “alright, let’s do it.”
~
It’s not everyday that Pearl and Cub visit the HEP in person to give an update. They wouldn’t for this normally, but they needed an excuse to get close.
Grian smiles when he sees them, “you guys are here! Great to see you again in person.”
Pearl forces a smile, staring into her brother’s eyes searchingly, “yeah, it is.” Grian turns back around to say something to the others and she takes a deep breath. She removes the brush with the solution on it and pokes Grian in the back of the neck with it.
He screams, slapping a hand over where it touched him. Grian whirls around to face her, staring at where she’s frozen in shock. He pales as realization sets in, taking a step back. Pearl reaches out and grabs his arm when he tries to run, panic covering his face.
Grian’s eyes glow purple as he yanks his arm away, “stay. Back.”
Pearl raises her arms slowly, “okay, it’s alright, we’re not going to hurt you.” Not like they can, she dropped the brush in surprise, and they’re more resistant against injuries.
Grian rapidly shakes his head, “no- I can’t- I-“ he falters and pauses for a moment, before shaking his head again. “You don’t understand.”
“Then explain it to us,” Pearl insists, taking a single step forwards.
He shakes his head again, “not now- not here.” Before any of them can say anything else, Grian turns around and sprints towards the exit.
“Grian!” Pearl exclaims, running after him. She stays right on his tail, not gaining on him, but not losing distance either. Even when he takes flight, she’s right behind him. He clearly knows that Pearl is right behind him, considering how evasive he’s flying.
Unfortunately for him, they’ve done this very often as kids, and she’s just as good of a flyer as he is.
Unfortunately for her, his destination is one she can’t follow him into.
They reach mycelium territory in minutes, where Grian immediately dives to the tree line. He rushes inside them the moment he lands. Pearl lands and stares at his retreating figure. She spreads out her wings again and takes flight, she landed on the grass, Father Spore will definitely arrive soon. And if he passes Grian…
With a heavy heart, Pearl returns to the town hall. Grian isn’t lost, not forever. She’ll get him back, she’ll save him from this.
—————
Cub noticed Grian acting a little suspicious and it wouldn’t leave his mind. Is what this reveal boils down to. The other most likely one is Mumbo admitting what he saw. Might write a version for that idea too, just to compare.
Varian’s clearly completely unstable by Secret of the Sundrop.
I just think he’s such a fascinating character, particularly in s1. we see him change from this sweet, misguided kid scientist into the main antagonist and it works. It makes sense as a character arc for him.
Cause he through a whole trauma conga line including:
Growing up without a mom
Having a father who was distant and unapproving
Trying to make the world better with his inventions but they always end in disaster*
Basically the town pariah, he has no friends and everyone considers him either a menace of a dangerous wizard
FINALLY finding some friends who he idolises (the princess rapunzel who’s also weird, his hero flynn rider and his “dream girl” cass who saved him) and who actually seem to care about him and believe in his inventions and TRUST him with secrets
Tries to help his village only to see quirin lie to the king and then be threatened by his own father into staying quiet (but at least his friend who he trusts that promises to help him)
goes out of his way to try to help his village and rapunzel by trying to solve the problem of the black rocks. quirin forbids it despite not giving any clear reason (and varian continues! even though he wants quirin’s approval, he still wants to help)
but his experiment goes wrong and he basically kills his dad
he runs through the worst blizzard corona has seen in thousands of years to find rapunzel for help, only to have that help denied*, then to be thrown out of the castle, and run back through the blizzard
none of his new friends come to check on him even though they promised to help and the storm is over
the black rocks tear his village apart around him and he’s left alone with his father’s body, desperately trying to find some cure
he starts to dig deeper and potentially find answers only to be attacked by armed, masked soldiers who chase him off and turn out to be the king’s secret police
the king spreads rumours that varian attacked rapunzel when he came to seek help, so now he’s a kingdom pariah
varian manages to secretly get a message to rapunzel to get the information in his home - that’s impossible for him to get to because of the armed guards
*admittedly, varian doesn’t know his limits and is reckless and dangerous with his inventions even if his intentions were good *rapunzel had a real, valid reason for not helping varian right away - she had to save the rest of the kingdom. never going to see him after.... not so valid.
Also Varian’s 14.
like being 14 is hard enough without this insane amount of trauma. and then being alone for almost all of it, blamed for most of it, and having no way to work through it because more just keeps happening.
So by the time secret of the sundrop comes around, he’s well and truly lost it.
An interesting take I saw once is that Varian is working through the stages of grief after losing Quirin - shock, denial, guilt, he’s into bargaining and is moving into anger.
He blames Rapunzel for what happened to his dad because she broke her promise to help, and that’s exacerbated by the fact that it seems her hair could be the only cure. And he’s willing to do anything to get it.
(low key though, he’s not entirely wrong about the rocks being rapunzel’s fault, although faults a strong word. the black rocks are searching for the sundrop in order to unite it back with the moonstone. rapunzel is the sundrop, so the black rocks are only there because of her. BUT she never chose to become the sundrop, it was frederic who did that. frederic knew of the potential consequences and chose to save his family anyway - honestly fair, but then kept everything a secret and let his kingdom and his people pay the price - not fair he’s an asshole and a terrible king. also quirin didn’t trust varian to tell him the truth about the rocks, and interrupted him during a key moment of the experiment causing it to go awry, so quirin is somewhat at fault too. and it was varian’s experiment that created the amber, so he’s at fault too. but it’s also understandable that a traumatised and alone 14 year old can’t deal with the overwhelming grief and guilt that losing his father was his fault, so he blames it on someone else. it’s complicated all round)
ANYWAY, varian kidnaps arianna partly for practicality and partly out of revenge. someone he loves was taken by the rocks, it was the fault of the royal family (completely, in his mind).
practicality: he needs rapunzel’s hair to save his father but he knows she would never help him willingly now (especially if the process could kill her), so he needs bait.
revenge: rapunzel is connected to the rocks and broke her promise, frederic kept secrets and sent guards to attack him and stop his progress on freeing his father, and arianna sat by and did nothing while this was happening.
varian’s choice to threaten the queen with amber is both chilling and genius.
chilling considering this is a person - and he seems to have no issues with murder here, especially the same gruelling end his father faced. admittedly, he truly believes that rapunzel’s hair will free quirin, so by that logic it should free arianna too.
also chilling though because varian must know there’s no way he will walk away from this. and he doesn’t care. all he wants is to save his father. he doesn’t care what he destroy’s in his path - including his own future.
genius because if rapunzel’s hair somehow doesn’t work - it won’t just be varian desperately trying to save his father, alone and shunned and attacked, it will be the entire kingdom trying to save the queen. when arianna was dying, the entire kingdom came together in search of an ancient healing flower that may or may not have existed AND THEY FOUND IT.
chilling and genius because it’s such a specific form of revenge. rapunzel and frederic hurt and betrayed varian, and left him with his father’s corpse frozen in amber. no one came to help him. now if they don’t help him, someone they love will suffer the same fate. they will understand some of the agony he’s been put through, he will make them understand.
varian is sarcastic and honestly seems to be enjoying all of this. maybe this is because he’s unstable, but i think it’s maybe because he thinks he’s finally in control. he’s getting his revenge, he’s freeing his father, and he’s proving that his inventions will work all at once.
but, like many times before, varian’s arrogance and desperation collide into recklessness and his plan fails.
and instead of revenge, quirin being safe, and his inventions working - he’s thrown his entire life away for NOTHING, as he’s left without his father permanently (at this point, there’s no known cure), while the royal family that caused all of this gets to have their happy reunion.
and he just snaps.
he’s not thinking about consequences. he’s not thinking at all. his bargaining failed completely and he’s gone head first into anger. he’s just engulfed in rage and despair and guilt and it all rushes together and he has to let some of that emotion out or he’ll drown in it.
and how dare rapunzel get to be happy with her parents when she broke her promise and her hair failed to free the only person that matters to varian. so varian decides to take away what matters to rapunzel. there’s no practicality or genius or planning. he just decides to destroy everything, for everyone to be in as much pain as he’s in, and he tries to murder three people.
i wish we’d been able to see some of his time in prison. i think not long after all of this, he’d become very, very depressed.
he’s sacrificed everything in his life in vain, hurt people he did care about and does come to regret that, took quirin’s away, and ruined his own life trying to fix it. you can understand how when varian is put in a cell with andrew, how easy it would be to manipulate him.
offer him the slightest friendship and he’d be desperate for any kind of positive interaction. offer him some father-figure approval? he’d be in their corner. offer him revenge on the kingdom that turned it’s back on him, revenge on the king and queen who’s negligence caused the black rocks, and the ability to wipe the slate clean? to have people respect him and his inventions, to be able to change things “for the better” and get revenge in the process? and varian in rapunzel’s return makes complete sense.
and so does his turn.
varian doesn’t want to hurt people (even if he is willing to do so). all he wanted was to help people, and for his father to be proud of him. obviously that did not work out. at all.
when he realises that his invention is going to be used to hurt a lot of people, he can’t stand by and let it happen. even if it means sacrificing his new friendships (doesn’t help that he trusted them and they lied to him). both of these things would bring up a lot of issues and unresolved trauma for varian, but he’s not in such a grief/rage stricken state, and he decides to try and help.
rapunzel has a bit more life experience, and can empathise somewhat with how varian must have felt after her betrayal. how much it hurts to lose a friend. she chooses to trust him here, because she believes he wants to help. he chooses to trust her here, because he regrets what happened and does truly want to help - especially to clean up his own mess.
after varian sees how much rapunzel cares for her people, i think he would understand her decision in queen for a day better. when rapunzel won’t let varian sacrifice himself, and instead saves him and risks herself for her people, i think he starts to see that person he admired so much back in early s1 again. and when rapunzel offers a way to potentially save quirin - he’s all in.
rapunzel trust him here. not because she doesn’t have any other options, or to save her people, she trusts varian here as himself. using the hurt incantation is so incredibly dangerous (and went so horribly wrong last time she used it, it caused the first HUGE crack in her relationship with cass) and yet she’s doing it for varian, and trusting him in the process. it’s a big deal.
and he proves himself here. the incantation frees quirin - achieves the thing that varian threw his entire life away to try to achieve - but varian stays with rapunzel. doesn’t give up on her, tries to help her - even when his father is free, even when all three of them are in tremendous danger. and his faith in her brings her back.
varian and rapunzel reach a balance in their relationship - one of trust and respect. and it’s slowly built up throughout season 3. quirin being free, and being proud of varian puts varian in a good place, where he actively takes accountability for his actions and does his best (to kind of an insane and dangerous degree) to try and help.
he’s just a fascinating character - always going to extremes. but whether he’s a plucky kid scientist, a reckless terrorist, a regretful ex-convict, or the royal alchemist - he always remains true to his character.
he’s fiercely loyal, over confident, willing to help, protective, insecure, goofy, strategic, calculating, obsessive, creative, naive, forward thinking, determined, bashful, kind, ruthless, passionate and inventive. it’s such an interesting mix of personality, and it makes him one of my favourite characters.
Yet more Zuko meta
In which I tackle Season 2 Zuko! (My S1 Zuko meta can be found here and here, for those who are interested.) I'm starting S2 with another episode that's been subject to its fair share of meta by other people, because as usual I have Opinions about it that I want to share.
Season 2 - Zuko Alone: In which Zuko, having tried doing the right thing by his crew (keeping them safe) and losing them all to Zhao's plan and the Avatar/La's vengeance at the North; having tried doing the right thing by his father/Fire Lord (capturing the Avatar) and wound up not only with no Avatar, but also labeled a traitor by his father and hunted by Azula; having (kind of) tried to at least do right by his Uncle (stealing to provide for them, now that they are penniless refugees) and gotten only more lectures on who he's supposed to be couched in "questions" about who he wants to be (questions that always come with a clear "right" answer in Iroh's mind), has finally had enough and decides to set out on his own and find out for himself who he is, when he's lost everything that he used to think defined him.
(also, uh, this one got... long?)
We'll go ahead and get this out of the way first: Zuko starts off Season 2 in a pretty low place, and his behavior reflects that. He's rude and dismissive to Iroh while lacking much of the subtle fondness he used to bury under a gruff exterior, he displays some of his most verbally/outwardly entitled behavior, he steals shamelessly from anyone who has more than he does and takes things he and Iroh don't even need but which might make their lives a bit easier. One of his lowest points comes just before Zuko Alone, when he steals Song's ostrich horse right after she and her mother have offered medical aid, food, and shelter to Zuko.
Zuko has just had a series of harsh lessons on how little ability he has to care for "his" people - his crew were taken from him and now they're all likely dead, he feels like he dragged his Uncle down with him as a traitor after his Uncle already spent 3 years traveling with Zuko in his banishment when he likely didn't have to, and then Iroh poisons himself while trying to make tea and would have died without the help of a kind stranger. So when he gets that help from Song, and then gets further generosity from Song and her mother in the form of food and pleasant company that his Uncle clearly enjoys, he lashes out. In spite of the fact that she is also poor, in spite of the fact that she's been hurt by the Fire Nation already (Zuko's people, who hurt her even though she is kind and compassionate and good; Zuko's people, who hurt Zuko because he lost his honor and apparently does not deserve his father's compassion or care), Zuko adds to that harm by stealing her ostrich horse.
It's a low point for him, there's no denying that! Even Iroh gets frustrated by Zuko's behavior. It's selfish, it's reckless, it's disrespectful, and at points like with the ostrich horse it's outright cruel. Through the early episodes of Season 2, we also see a rift growing between Iroh and Zuko that hasn't really been there before. This rift eventually builds to the point where, in response to Iroh's growing frustration, Zuko chooses to part from his Uncle entirely and sets out on his own.
Ultimately, this parting does wind up being a healing and positive journey for Zuko, if not a very pleasant one for most of it.
Instead of stealing his way across the Earth Kingdom for most of Zuko Alone, he starts taking odd jobs from residents of the small towns he's passing through and begins to work his way across the Earth Kingdom to survive. Finally, he winds up in a small town that's been ravaged by the war and is, at the time Zuko shows up, being effectively run by Earth Kingdom army bullies. This town provides Zuko with an opportunity to reaffirm for himself who he is and what he values, though it winds up not being sufficient in the end to break him away from his goal to one day return home with Ozai's approval.
I see discussions sometimes that question why this journey was not enough for Zuko to choose the Avatar's side by the time he and Katara talk under Ba Sing Se. What I think is important, even if we don't really hear Zuko verbalize it until later in Season 3, is that Zuko still has years of propaganda to unlearn. Propaganda that was taught to him throughout his childhood, about the greatness of his nation and the honorable intentions of his people in the war. He has been taught that the Fire Nation is trying to help the other nations by spreading "civilization" to people who lack the same innovations and resources as the Fire Nation, spreading their "glory" to the hapless ignorant hoards that populate the rest of the world.
It's an ugly narrative for sure, and most viewers (with the benefit of narrative framing and other characters' stories that Zuko doesn't have) rightfully recognize it for the imperialist nonsense that it is. Zuko, however, is still fairly young and until very recently was still very immersed in the Fire Nation rhetoric. During the three years he spent on his ship, his crew consisted entirely of Fire Nation soldiers. Even when he would have stopped at ports, there is little evidence or reason to believe that he would not have chosen primarily neutral ports, colony ports, or other ports dominated by Fire Nation peoples.
At the start of Season 2, Zuko also very likely has very recent memories of watching the Avatar, while merged with La, slaughter a significant chunk of the Fire Nation navy in vengeance for what, to Zuko, would have looked like the plot of one corrupt naval officer. As he travels through the Earth Kingdom, he sees how the war has negatively affected these towns, but he also sees cruel, petty, and dishonorable behavior from Earth Kingdom soldiers (realistic behavior, given that the Earth Kingdom is itself a major world power initially built through imperialist conquest, and given that human nature has plenty of examples of people who get a bit of power over others and immediately proceed to abuse that power for their own self interest no matter where they are from), who choose to bully and steal from their own people.
Zuko's travels do help him heal from the trauma of losing his crew, losing his ship, and the latest rejection from Ozai in the form of being declared a traitor to his own people (plus, the likely additional heavy trauma of having to raft through who knows how many days worth of the bloating corpses of Fire Nation soldiers left behind by La's rampage, as he and his Uncle starved on their tiny raft while fleeing the North Pole massacre). Up to this point, Zuko's compassion and empathy has been largely buried - by the trauma from his father in his Agni Kai, by the stress and desperation and anger he used to fuel himself during his 3-year Avatar hunt, by the slaughter he witnessed at the North Pole and the further rejection Azula delivered on Ozai's behalf afterwards (just when he thought he and his Uncle had escaped the North and made it to safety).
His travels alone through the Earth Kingdom show Zuko certain limits to his own capacity for selfishness and cruelty, however, even when he is at one of his lowest points in the series. Choosing not to steal from the young, pregnant couple marks his first major turning point, where he realizes that even if he has nothing and is nothing (nothing but a traitor, expected to act without honor) in the eyes of the Fire Nation, he still desires to act with whatever honor he can when the choice belongs to him anyway.
It is after this point that Zuko stops stealing and starts finding jobs to earn money/food/shelter each day. By the time he reaches the last small town in the episode, he is able to interact fairly kindly (if not warmly, though Zuko is frequently shown to be awkward in social situations of any kind) with the young child of the family he finds work with, when the kid starts following him around and asking him questions and making it clear that he looks up to Zuko due to an act of kindness Zuko committed earlier on the kid's behalf. Zuko even gives the kid his knife, one of the few things he has left of his old life, and something he had treasured enough to take with him from home when he was originally banished.
Spending time with the Earth Kingdom family and interacting with this young kid helps Zuko heal enough to bring back forward his innate desire towards protecting and caring for those who could reasonably be seen as "his" to care for (the same drive, arguably, that lead him to save the crew member who nearly died during The Storm in S1, and ultimately lead him to temporarily give up chasing the Avatar and prioritize his crew's safety at the end of that episode; the same drive that got him challenged to an Agni Kai, burned, and banished at 13). When the kid is directly threatened by the Earth Kingdom soldiers who have been bullying the townspeople, Zuko's core of compassion trumps the more selfish front he'd been trying to put forward in order to protect himself up to that point. He turns back to the town, fights the Earth Kingdom soldiers to save the kid who had looked up to him, the child of the family who had given him work and shelter while he was there, and eventually he reveals his true name and title as he achieves victory against the soldiers with firebending, while remembering his mother's last words to him to never forget who he was.
It is, briefly, a moment of triumph for Zuko. He has objectively done the right thing, he has acted with compassion and used his strength to help those in need rather than to cause harm, and he has owned the truth of who he is without shame.
And very rapidly, his moment of triumph turns to yet another painful lesson on how other people see him, not for what he does but for who he is. It is understandable for the townspeople to reject Zuko here! He's just admitted that he's not merely a firebender, he is also the son of the man who is currently leading the nation that started the war and is still perpetuating atrocities against their people. He is the crown prince of the nation responsible for all the loved ones whom these townspeople have lost to the war. He could not have more clearly announced himself The Enemy if he'd tried!
For Zuko, however, it still means that he tried to find acceptance outside of his home, acceptance that was not dependent on his lying and hiding who he was, acceptance through doing something good for this town of mostly strangers, and he was told that he could not both be himself and also seek acceptance in another nation. Regardless of his father's rejection, he is a Prince of the Fire Nation, and that means in the eyes of the world that he bears at least some responsibility for his nations crimes. He is rejected, here, even by the very child whose life he had just saved. A rejection that is made clear and absolute when the child refuses even to keep Zuko's knife.
The message is clear: he is not wanted here; he does not belong.
His travels have brought him to a place where he wants to be accepted again, however. He wants to have a place where he belongs, a place where his contributions and his care are both accepted and appreciated, without having to pretend that he is someone he isn't.
And so, having been rejected by these Earth Kingdom townsfolk for revealing himself, Zuko returns to something he knows, a mission that he had already spent 3 years convincing himself would earn him a way back to the place and acceptance that he most desperately craves - he returns to hunting the Avatar and, with it, the dream that he can one day earn his father's approval and go home.
Fandom: Omori | Pairing: Genderneutral Reader x Aubrey Omori | Characters: Aubrey (Omori) | Timeline: In-Game time, Three Days Left before the Truth, after the Church | Warnings: Mentions of knives/getting hurt by a knife/tiny mentions of blood. Otherwise nothing else
Spoilers for Omori(Three Days Left)!
Tumblr media
You've been living in Faraway Town for as long as you can remember. But never have you seen as much drama surrounding it until the last few days.
Prior to that, a huge tragedy occurred 4 years ago, which seemed be the catalyst of it all. Friends breaking up, shut-ins, gangs running around, fights breaking out. It was a lot.
You stayed out of it all of course, as did most of the town, even though the stories of the early lost pianist still lingers. It left its mark on the town, especially her close friends and family.
But none were more visibly affected, than Aubrey.
The girl had been devastated, searching for comfort anywhere but couldn't find it. And when her father left it only got worse. She started to hang around the hooligans with scooters, dyeing her hair, sporting a nailed bat, and causing trouble.
.....You always did care for her though.
Back in school, you admired her persistence. Her sweetness, her joy. She had so much life to her. You found her... endearing.
But now.... Well, you didn't feel that different.
She was brave, tough, and filled with fire. It still drew you in. And, in all honesty, when she dyed her hair pink you found her.... really pretty. It truly suited her.
Even though she's changed so drastically, something still tells you deep inside, she was still that loving, persistent Aubrey full of life. And something tells you... you might have a few feelings for her, regardless if she wasn't the same.
Though, you could probably never get near her, she was always with her new, brazen friends... So you thought you didn't have a chance and never will.
....Until today.
Tumblr media
You sat at Faraway Park, the usual spot you hung out at. You were just staring at the orange lit sky until-
"Haugh- hauh... haughh..."
You heard heavy breathing. Exhausted, strained, and upset breathing. ....It sounded like they were crying? What-
When you stood up to look around to see who it might have been, you see a figure hunched over the entrance of Faraway Park. Upon closer inspection, you immediately recognized the brink pink hair. Aubrey. Was she okay?
She then dropped to her knees, and you heard sobbing. That set you off.
You stepped forward hesitantly and decided, this wasn't the time to be nervous. You have to help her.
You worked up the bravery and called to her, asking if she's okay.
Her head jolted up, frantically looking around in search of who said that. Then her eyes landed on you, standing near a bench. She quickly wiped her eyes and stood up, grumbling to herself.
"That's none of your damn business." She responded, clearly trying to sound intimidating, but her tired voice betrayed her. Probably sore from crying... or yelling.
You knew she'd say that... regardless, you asked her if she got hurt somewhere, taking note of her scrapes and bruises. You... weren't really sure of what to do. She was too stubborn for her own good, but you could match that stubbornness. You wanted to help her.
"I said. It was none. Of your damn. Business." She growled through gritted teeth, clutching her side. It was either from aggression, or she was hurting.
You were running out of options.... But that was when you had an idea! You went back to the bench and rummaged through your bag, and found the cold Apple Juice bottle you bought earlier. This could help Aubrey if she has any bruises...
You carefully went up to Aubrey and held out the juice bottle. You tell her she can use it for any bruises, or even drink it if she wanted.
She looked over at the bottle, and then at you. She then glanced down as she snatched the bottle from you with a grunt, placing it on her side and wincing a little.
You smiled a little, you gestured to the bench you were just sitting on, and offered for her to sit down because she looked tired. She stared at the bench for a second, before only responding with a scoff.
Taking that as an agreement, you went and sat back down. She picked up her nailed bat from off the ground and head over to where you were, then slumping down next to you.
You both sat there in silence for a minute. Only the sound of Aubrey's breathing could be heard. You kept glancing at her, until you finally spoke up. Telling her you have bandages in your bag if she needed them, or you can get her more cold drinks. Which you realized would be hard because Othermart is closing. You just hoped she wasn't hurt too badly....
You continued speaking softly, saying you heard about what happened in Faraway Park. You hoped her cut is okay.
She glanced over at you for a second, before she turned back and responded.
"It's... fine. I had it bandaged up. It wasn't too deep."
Her voice was quiet, as if hesitant if she should talk. You tilted her head at her, eyebrows scrunched in concern.
You asked her where she was cut, hoping this wasn't too sensitive of a question.
"On my right arm." She said, readjusting the cold bottle into her left hand to show you. After unfurling her jacket sleeve, you see her arm bandaged up, specks of blood could be seen.
"I tried to block Sunny when he attacked me with this arm, that wasn't a good idea...."
You nodded. You didn't really understand why Sunny attacked Aubrey with a knife, but like always you stayed out of it all. Aubrey placed her right hand on the bottle again, and you two sat in silence for another minute.
"Thanks."  You heard her say. You glanced over to see her popping the bottle open to take a drink, she continued, "...For helping me... or whatever. You didn't have to do that."
You gave her a small smile, saying it was no problem and you'd always help her, especially now that she needed it.
You told her you cared about her.
That came out of nowhere- You just blurted that out! Why did you say that?
Aubrey looked at you, eyes wide. You messed up, oh you must've messed up! She might yell at you, make fun of you, or just leave and never talk to you again-
....But instead she... looked down. Her hair covered her eyes, so you couldn't see her expression. Oh you were terrified- Then she started saying something,
"Really?"
One word.
One question.
Out of all the things she could've said, she asked that? You were a little bit shocked but....
You told her you did. Really. You promised.
She looked back at you, eyes reading you as if trying to figure out if you were lying. You weren't.
You two sat in comfortable silence after that,  until your time was over. You gave her the rest she needed.
Tumblr media
Hello everyone, this is my first Aubrey x Reader fic. I just wanted to write something simple and soft. I think Aubrey deserved to be comforted after the whole thing at the Church.... It takes a little bit to break down her walls, but she's warming up to you. I hope you liked it!
Decades Challenge 1890s Update #3
Tumblr media
The following morning Josephine brought Kenneth down for breakfast. As soon as she had set him down into his highchair and brought him his food, Kenneth threw the place across the room. "Was that necessary, Kenneth?" Josephine grumbled under her breath.
"Ready play!" Kenneth exclaimed. Josephine just let out a sigh of frustration and began cleaning the mess up.
Tumblr media
After the mess had been cleaned up Daniel made his way downstairs. An idea had begun to brew in Josephine's head last night and into this morning. She decided to run it passed her brother.
"So, Daniel," she began. "I noticed when I was outside yesterday that there are several empty garden plots out there. Do you intend to plant anything there?"
"The last time we planted anything in those garden plots Theodore Alden smashed Cynthia's prized pumpkins, so no we do not intend on planting anything out there," Daniel explained his voice stiff.
"May I?" Josephine asked hesitantly. She'd always loved plants, and botany. Josephine had lost track of how many books on botany her father had gotten her throughout the years.
"With what money will you use to buy seeds?" Daniel asked her angerly.
"I was hoping you may lend me some," Josephine said quietly before quickly adding. "Of course, you can sell all the plants when they're fully grown so that way you can make the money back, I just quite enjoy gardening."
Tumblr media
"And what are you going to do with Kenneth today while you go galivanting around the market," Daniel asked her. "He cannot go with you he is only 2, who will watch Kenneth?"
"I-um," Josephine hadn't quite thought about that part. "Could I go when you return from work, and then you can watch him?"
Daniel looked absolutely furious by that suggestion, "me? watch my own son," he asked her clearly angry. "You want me to work all day, and then spend the few moments of rest time I get watching my child? That is the women's job."
"It was just a suggestion," Josephine trailed off upset. "Just forget I asked, I'll stop thinking about it. You're right I'm a fool."
Tumblr media
"I can watch Kenneth for an hour or so," Cynthia offered.
"Dear," Daniel began to say his voice going soft. "That shouldn't be necessary, Josephine has agreed to drop her ridiculous suggestion. You need rest in order to stay healthy throughout the pregnancy."
"Kenneth is my son too," Cynthia reminded him. "And if Josephine goes later in the afternoon, shortly before Kenneth's afternoon nap then it shouldn't be an issue. I can assure you I am well enough to watch my own son for a few short hours."
"You're positive?" Daniel asked her. Cynthia nodded, and he seemed to relax just a little. Daniel reached into his pockets and pulled out just a little money for Josephine to spend at the market to purchase seeds.
"I hope you have a nice day at work," Cynthia told Daniel before bidding him goodbye with a kiss on the cheek.
Once Daniel was out of earshot Josephine said, "thank you very much, Cynthia, you have no idea how much this means to me."
"You're very welcome," Cynthia smiled.
Tumblr media
Josephine rushed through her chores that morning which included, giving Kenneth a much-needed bath, bringing the laundry inside, feeding the chickens and collecting eggs. She was buzzing with excitement over being able to go to the market later that afternoon. Josephine wondered which plants she'd decide to buy, if she'd have money for fertilizers, maybe if she were a little stingier with the funds Daniel had given her, a book too.
Josephine silently chided herself, that money was to be used on seed packets and nothing else. It would be rude to use her brother's money on something else.
Tumblr media
Before Josephine knew it, Cynthia was dismissing her to head to the market. Josephine very excitedly made her way further into town.
Once arriving at the market, Josephine spotted a friendly face behind the register. "Mr. Alden," she greeted Theo. "Hello, fancy seeing you here."
"Josie," Theo said a hint of disbelief in his voice. "It's good to see you. My father owns the market, he typically lets me run the shop on slow days such as this one. I was not expecting to see you again until the picnic.
Tumblr media
"Yes, I had thought so too," Josephine admitted. She had been looking forwards to discussing the book with Theo and she had thought that the picnic would be her next chance to see him. "But, it seems that I have been let out of my purgatory for just a few short hours in order to obtain some seeds for gardening."
"Mr. Williams is starting the garden back up then?" Theo asked. "He nor his wife have planted anything for about two years, ever since I accidentally squashed Mrs. Williams' pumpkins."
"He might have mentioned that" Josephine teased.
Tumblr media
"It's not at all what you think," Theo began to defend himself. "My brothers and I were kicking a ball around in the yard, and Ben my eldest brother, kicked it under the fence and into Mrs. William's pumpkin patch. I tripped on the vines trying to retrieve the ball and fell a top her pumpkins."
"And here I believed it was on purpose," Josephine smiled at him. "Thank you, Mr. Alden, for the book you left for me. I haven't had much time to begin reading it, but I'm looking forward to learning more."
Theo grinned at her, "I thought you might enjoy it. I do love a good educational read especially one related to the medical field."
"You mentioned that in the note you left, how many years until you attend Britechester?" Josephine asked.
"I'm sixteen now, so two more," Theo told her. "I'm quite excited, I've wanted to be a doctor since I was a young boy."
"I feel as though that would be such a rewarding profession, you'd get to help people in need," Josephine observed.
Tumblr media
Theo took a moment to just study Josephine, even after a few days had passed since their first meeting Theo still believed she was the prettiest sim he'd ever seen, and she was smart. Most the girls in town didn't have an interest in science or mathematics, they really only talked about the weather or their cross-stitch, and Theo rather found those topic boring.
"The seed packets, Mr. Alden," Josephine reminded him snapping Theo out of his own head.
"Right, yes, the seed packets," he quickly said. "You do have permission to call me Theo, Josie."
"That's very kind but I think I shall stick with calling you Mr. Alden."
Theo quickly tried to rack is brain to figure out a way to make Josephine stay just a little longer. If she showed her to the seed packets then she'd be gone, and he'd have to wait until Saturday to see her again. "We have a garden outside, you may have noticed it before you entered," Theo began to offer. "Would you like a tour?"
"Oh yes, please," Josephine said intrigues. "From what I saw it was lovely."
"Then right this way, Josie."
Tumblr media
"And here is the flower garden," Theo rattled off a few facts pertaining to each of the flowers.
"Yes," Josephine agreed. "Did you know, many species of roses actually grow a fruit known as the rose hip. It resembles berries and it can actually be used to make jams, or to even brew tea."
"I did not know that" Theo admitted. "I take it you're interested in plants."
Josephine nodded eagerly, "When I was young my mother had a garden. She used to allow me to help plant and harvest everything. I loved it."
Tension grew between Theo and Josephine after the mention of her late mother. Theo knew it was shortly after the death of Grace Williams that Josephine's father decided to move the family from Willow Creek to San Myshuno, "My condolences about your mother by the way," Theo said after a pause. "Your father as well. I can't imagine what it would be like to lose both ones' parents like that."
"It's alright," Josephine assured him. "Really, death is a part of life. You really have no choice but to move on."
"Right," Theo trailed off.
"So those seed packets," Josephine said breaking the silence.
Tumblr media
Theo and Josephine sat at a nearby picnic table to discuss the sale. "So, I suppose I was looking for six of the oversized seeds, and then as many other seed packets I can get with the remaining money," Josephine explained.
"Nonsense," Theo told her, and before he could stop himself, he said. "Take whatever you need, no charge." He'd be in trouble as soon as his father found out.
"Are you certain Mr. Alden?" Josephine asked in disbelief. "No, I must insist I pay."
"Friends and family discount," Theo quickly said. "And you most certainly are a friend of the family. You better just take the seed packets, because I will not be accepting your money."
"In that case, thank you very much," Josephine smiled at him. "I better head home, I may still be able to begin planting."
"See you at the picnic this weekend then?" Theo asked. "I'm hoping we can discus that book I left."
"I would like that very much," Josephine said as she stood up. "Thank you again, Theo."
Tumblr media
Upon arriving home Josephine found that Cynthia had already put Kenneth down for his afternoon nap. "Was everything alright, are you still feeling well?" Josephine asked.
"I feel perfectly well," Cynthia assured her. "No need to fuss over me, head outside and begin planting your seeds."
"Are you certain?" Josephine asked. "Because I can make you something to eat or-"
"Go outside," Cynthia repeated.
Tumblr media
Josephine hurried outside and got started planting the oversized seeds. She made sure the water them immediately. After Josephine opened the remaining seed packets, and planted what she knew would grow during the springtime into the planter boxes Daniel had set up on the side of the house. Josephine was excited to start tending to a garden again. Her father had allowed her to have a small one in the home in San Myshuno, but plants never grew well in the city like that.
Tumblr media
After everything had been watered and planted Josephine decided to put her good mood to some use and decided to try making a meal she'd never attempted before, franks and beans. She soon found that it wasn't as difficult as she had been anticipating, and for the first time Daniel did not have a rude comment to make about her cooking over dinner.
Josephine rushed through her evening chores in order to finish reading the book Theo had left for her. She was determined to have it finished by the day of the picnic, which was fast approaching. Josephine wasn't all that excited for the picnic until her conversation with Theo today. It felt like she actually had a friend for the first time since moving to Willow Creek, and for that she was grateful.
-----------------------------
That is the last of the gameplay I did over the weekend. I probably won't be updating too much the next few days, because the beginning of the week I'm usually super busy with work and school, but as always, I'd love to know your thoughts.
Soo I was reading a Oushitsu Kyoshi Haine | The Royal Tutor fanfiction titled The White Lily of Granzreich by AntaresScorpii. I got quite attached to Leonhard since I watched the anime and read the manga. He is so innocent, bright, and cheerful I want to... hurt and ruin him. *whisper softly*
Reading the fanfiction, I can't help but also imagine my version of the story in this verse.
In mine, Leo is a girl with the name Leiya. Unlike Leo who got kidnapped for days or weeks tops, she got kidnapped for almost a year.
Surely you can imagine what she might experience as a kidnapping victim, especially as a girl.
Someone rescue her.
When they were on the run, something happened that made Leiya get a dagger slit across her eyes, making her blind.
She covered her eyes with a blindfold after that.
At that point, she only remembers her time as a captive and has hazy memories before that, the only clear memory is about her name.
She found out that she is carrying a child.
It's dready for her but she also doesn't want to get rid of the child.
With all the trauma she got, she still thinks clearly enough that the baby inside her is innocent and has nothing to do with whatever happened to her.
Her rescuer houses her and helps her throughout time.
The rescuer has something like an orphanage but not really an orphanage? They help those who are in need.
Since Leiya doesn't remember anything, she lives with them.
When her baby is born, a boy, she is happy but also dreadful. Afraid that the baby will look like whoever his father might be. Even though she can't see him, which she feels remorseful for feeling glad about.
The others reassure her that her baby is her copy but different gender, which is true.
She is actually afraid that she can't love him, unable to give him the love she deserves from his mother.
But she is glad that despite that, she is able to love him unconditionally.
She is also surprised to find out that she will still love him even if he looks like his father.
The search from the royal family never stops but after a year, it's not as intense because when they find who abdunced Leiya, she is not there and the kidnapper talks as if she's long dead.
A year or two after her rescue, the first who found her is Eins and Ernst when they walk around the town in disguise.
It starts with a crying, lost little girl.
Ernst approached her and asked what's wrong and the little girl said that she's separated from her sister and she needs to find her because her sister is blind and needs her help.
They offer to help her and ask what her sister's name is and she answers that her name is Leiya.
Eins finger twitched but doesn't say anything because he thinks it's just a coincidence.
They found Leiya with her back facing them while shouting the little girl's name.
Eins heart feels heavy, because from the back, despite the appearance, she looks like his baby sister.
She shout Leiya's name and when the girl turn around, Eins feels the world stop around him.
That's his sister. A sister he failed to protect two years ago. A sister he thought dead. But she is here, nagging around a little girl he doesn't know. Despite not close to any of his siblings, he know their voice and he know that she is his Leiya.
When the little girl tells her about them, she looks up and they see the blindfold. They remember the little girl saying that her sister is blind.
Leiya introduces herself and when Eins says his name, a little hope in heart that she recognizes him, but she loses in her mind.
When Ernst snaps her out of it, she sheepishly says that his voice is familiar.
Eins is not dumb to not speculate that she might lost her memories. Because why wouldn't she come back to them if she remembered?
The girls bring them to their home with the little girl leading them while chattering non-stop.
They found out about the baby, not really since he's already 1 or 2 years old, when he ran or wobbled to Leiya while calling her Mama.
Their first thought would be it's just a kid that might think of her as his mother if not for him basically a copy of her.
Eins is not stupid and naive to think that nothing were happened to her all those time, but it still weight his heart to found out that it's true.
Eins and Ernst don't tell the others immediately. Spending as much time with her to get to know her again before Eins sure that it's time for the other to know.
The kid somehow took a liking to him and called him uncle which gave him a strange feeling, a good strange feeling.
When the others were being told, there was shouting, tears, and everything.
Eins explained everything he knew about her condition and situation and made a plan to bring them one by one to not overwhelm her.
When it's Victor's turn, the first time Leiya heard his voice she cried. She can't explain why, she just said that his voice is familiar but different from the others and it hurts. She feels like she misses his voice but also feels angry.
The rebellion has organized a protest, something peaceful, a last ditch attempt to end this feud without bloodshed. They use the wooden church as a basis. The Empress’s men come, in their shiny armor with their iron swords and pikes and bows and some upon their horses, who’s hooves sound like thunder.
The town burns, they barely had time to even ring the churchbell before it is struck down forcefully, hallowed fragments crumbling into the hungry mouth of the sea.
Down by the water, Eurus, Notos, and Boreas are being led to a hiding place by their mother. Eurus pauses, but what about Zephyrus? She left not even thirty minutes earlier, they should go look for her!Their mother, tears in her eyes, urges them to move on, they can’t go looking, their father has already been captured and it would only get more of them killed. Eurus, unable to tell if it’s just the smoke that’s hurting his eyes, moves forward with the rest of the group.
Meanwhile, Zephyrus is lost in a burning forest. Running through the forest, she comes upon the old maypole, with two figures standing below it. One in an out of place dress, glistening white and elegant, like Theis herself, with a silver crown upon her head. Distantly, she recognizes the Empress. The other is dressed in armor, sword at her side. She stops in shock and fury. You did this! There is a moment when the crowned tyrant’s eyes lock onto hers, before she is hit with a fireball, and runs into the river to relieve the pain and burning.
about dilan.
Born as a first generation American-Turkish daughter of two marine biologists that constantly traveled around, Dilan couldn’t recall a moment in her childhood where she had a defined routine. The oldest of three, and the only biological child of the couple, she had to take responsibilities really early on whenever their parents would be gone for long periods of time. She surely didn’t blame them for having to work or having a career they were so passionate about, and it’s not even as if they were bad parents as they were actually pretty loving when they were around, but she just wished they could’ve been more mindful about the fact they also had three kids at home that needed them.
When Dilan was just seventeen, both of her parents died in a helicopter accident and the custody of her youngest siblings were basically thrown on the still underage woman. Even if she had taken care of them for most of her life, raising them more than their parents did, it still all felt too overwhelming, too much for her to handle, but she was able to push those feelings aside in order to step up for them.
That pretty much defined the person she would become later on—the one that constantly puts other people’s needs above her own, though she rarely sees that as a bad thing. She likes having a compassionate and caring soul, even if it’s something that tires the life out of her at times.
As the years passed and the three Sunar children grew older, Dilan was able to focus on her passions without having to worry much about her siblings. She traveled around for a while, trying to find herself. Having lost all of her teenage years by being the most responsible version of herself, she became more impulsive, reckless, eager to try all the things she had missed out on. That lead to some pretty awful life choices but at least she was able to collect some funny stories to share for shock value in bars or at the counter of the record store.
The opportunity to settle down somewhere came when her best friend moved to Roswell and, seeing as she needed a place to grow roots in, Dilan decided to follow her there, moving to a town that reminded her of the one she had grown up in. The impulsiveness, however, is something that stuck to her like a plague and that’s what lead to the decision of buying Feel Good Records when she knew close to nothing about how to run a business. Clearly, she’s struggling and always two seconds away from breaking down in tears, but hey! At least she’s trying and doing something that actually makes her happy, seeing as without all the responsibilities, she really does enjoy being the owner of the store.
wanted connections.
Today on the blorbo rotisserie spit in my mind is my own dnd character. I just have so many fucking thoughts about her. Especially after last session and I have to wait a full week to get into it and it's gonna be so interesting and just ugh. I honestly kinda want out heist next week to go wrong because the drama of that my god.
Ok so she's kind of a lot to explain. Basically her name is Amy, she's a dwarven wizard and her background is that her parents escaped from a very heavily colonised and exploited area through various questionably legal means, and also questionably moral means when she was still a little kid. Her dad worked his ass off basically establishing the mob in a big city and gaining a pretty significant place of power in said city. After that her life was kinda chill for a bit, she was new money rich girl vibes. Very autistic, lost her mum to disease and had some pretty shitty relationships (her sexuality is something I'm still trying to figure out. She's only dated men and one NB before (literally her only good relationship lol) but there's a couple of places in her backstory where I'm like... Hmm maybe she's a little sapphic and maybe she's not into men at all, still feeling it out) anyway she was working on some pretty insane magical research that her twin sister then stole. A few weeks later said research has very clearly been used on a magically nuclear bomb. Now it was used on literally the same group that was colonising her home nation so there's a lot of mixed feelings there. So Amy goes into a full spiral and basically just goes completely AWOL from her friends and support network trying to find her sister, get her research back and get an explanation for why it was taken and used on a god damn nuke.
Through various logistics she meets the party and decides to ally with them because they're also dealing with several world ending threats and she is desperately lonely and wants to have some people around her that she isn't terrified she's dragging into worse shit by being friends with them. By doing this she meets Tam. Tam is a DM PC who is honestly a lot of the time a vehicle for jokes. He's a rouge and a little bit dumb but he's got a sweet heart and is genuinely brave. Now those two had met before because he worked at a dishwasher in her mansions for a while, during which he stole her curtains. For the first good few sessions they had a very antagonist relationship at least on her end and given that Amy has a tendency to serve a little bit as comic relief when her story isn't being directly discussed it's was kind of a fun thing for me and our DM to play with when the tension needed cutting. Anyway after a few sessions of this I suddenly got the thought "oh my god enemies to lovers Tam and Amy" and we all thought it was funny so we have been running around this weird flirtationship with the two of them for a bit. They had some genuinely cute moments, like him giving her the curtains back so she can furnish her room in the extra dimensional mini van the party live in or her using mold earth to help him garden. At this point nothing has happened but he's noticed her very obvious crush on him and told her he feels the same.
Anyway as this is happening we're involved in this towns deeply complicated political web and simultaneously trying to help out an indigenous settlement and also stop a train that we probably do need to get on from being built because of the harm it will do to said settlement and also because Amy has figured out it is being made with no god damn health and safety procedures. We also then found out that said magical nuke you know the one that has Amy's research in it is being planned or be used on a group of powerful agents in the area. A group that Amy happens to know quite well. Now the leader is kind of a generally bad guy and is also very envious of her father's position and wants his title for himself. But still, he's not bad enough to justify using the nuke. So we're trying to stop that if at all possible, which will also win us some clout that maybe used to better negotiate for the rights of the indeginous settlement.
So the party minus Tam who was off doing a bit, went to go get some information and one of the things we learnt is that the leader of this group is actually looking for Amy because he wants to arrange a political marriage between her and his son. So while we don't have a full plan yet, we're thinking of bringing her to him, getting her to have a negotiation about that arrangement and then assianating him to stop the nuke from going off because of he's gone then it won't, or at least in my head, maybe just a general negotiation with him because it's not like we're particularly fond of the people who are asking him to be killed because they are the ones threatening the indigenous settlement. But Tam is none the wiser and just ugh the drama of it all. Because political marriage isn't necessarily off the table for her, especially if it gets them safe passage to the next place they need to go because that is something that's becoming harder and harder to figure out how to do. And our DM, is not someone to throw a one dimensional bad guy at us. I wouldn't be surprised is he has a good amount to offer at this negotiation. But at the same time Amy's still in a pretty self destructive spiral and does want that research back but it wouldn't be like she was endangering anyone she actually cares about. But there's this buding romance and budding friendship that's also happening at the same time and I just can't wait to see where it all goes.
There's also a lot of other threads at play here, most of this is honestly a side story. The lore is deep and complex and fascinating but I'm just trying to cover the directly relevent stuff to Amy right now. Anyway here's was my first ever art of her to reward anyone who read this far
Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt
Tumblr media
Synopsis:  This novel is about the relationship between a giant Pacific octopus and a seventy year old aquarium cleaner. Tova Sullivan is coping with the loss of her family, from the thirty-year old disappearance of her son to the recent passing of her estranged brother. Marcellus having lived most of his adult life in captivity is the only one whom she can open up to. When Tova makes the decision to move to a retirement home, a newcomer to their small town is recommended as her temporary replacement. Cameron Cassmore is adrift again, having recently lost both his latest job and girlfriend. He arrives in Sowell Bay hoping to find out about his past but mostly to procure a financial means for his future. After all, it's the least a father could do for a long-lost son he never knew. But in the end, all three of them discover unlikely connections they didn't expect to find in a small town Pacific Northwest aquarium.
My Quibs: I'll start with that I found it an enjoyable read, for a debut novel. Van Pelt has a good foundation: interesting characters, a structured plot, etc. It just needed a bit more editing and tending to get it book club worthy. Her characters are endearing (at least, most of them) and grounded in a way that I think most readers could connect to. I mean, who doesn't love a giant Pacific octopus. And I found out in the audiobook, Marcellus has a British accent! Not how I read it in my head, but I'm seriously considering going back and listening to it now. My one major flaw with her characters is the pacing of their arc or growth. Especially Cameron... Van Pelt is able to craft a very nice story but it feels like when someone realizes how late the hour is so they rush to gather all their things and exits fairly abruptly. We were having a pleasant conversation and then she's like, "oops let's wrap it up, the end". There were also a lot of nuances and small details that seemed like several scattered ideas that she never followed through on. Details that I and my fellow book club readers snagged onto with interest so clearly we felt there was potential. We were invested in the outcomes of all three characters; we wanted more. What about his mother? What actually happened on the boat? The details there are vague enough that it initially comes off as teasing and then negligence. So, despite my reservations about how she ended it, it was enjoyable and it only frustrates me that I know it could've been even better.
Should you read it? I don't want to dissuade anyone from reading it, just want to give a caveat that it is very much a debut novel.
Similar reads? Ah, I dunno. It strikes me as a book you'd find on that first table as you walk into a Barnes and Noble. Take that how you will.
(Spoiler Alert!) OK. Here's where imma rant a bit about my boy Cameron. He really rubs on my last nerve. And I know Van Pelt did this deliberately, creating an angsty chip-on-his-shoulder "genius"-with-issues man child. And I would've written him off early except 1) I had a whole novel to travel with him so I had to stick with it and 2) I read a comment that re-framed his behavior as grief(?) which gave me more patience to see his growth through. But speaking of growth, Cameron throughout the novel takes the smallest tiniest baby steps in working through his issues until literally in a single-page chapter, Van Pelt literally and literary-ly turns the character around. He goes from running away from everyone, without any note or explanation, to changing his mind halfway to California. What magic is this? That cures selfish broken people so quickly? And after this revelation, we essentially get a "where are they now" ending where everyone has a promising life ever after. Ugh, disappointing. Not that they can't have happy endings but it just doesn't seem realistic when it happens like a flip of a switch. It doesn't feel earned. And also speaking of grief (it was from a "what kind of book club questions" web search), I was really interested in the perspective that what binds all three characters together was coping with grief. Marcellus lost his freedom and consequently a normal life. Tova lost family, piece by piece. And Cameron lost his parents and a childhood. We see the effects of it embodied in their character. Because the actual trauma happened so long ago, I didn't expect to see them learning how to cope with it, but more how they live with it day to day. I get a bit of that with Marcellus and Tova, although I still can't believe that thirty years of wondering about what happened to her son that she's content with a vague story told offhandedly. Like, no follow up questions, really? Agh, the abruptness of the ending still really frustrates me. And poor Marcellus should have been the star of the show, but to quote my fellow book clubber, he "was just a plot device". And to quote another book clubber, "she never really explains how he learned to read English".
What did you think of Remarkably Bright Creatures?
About
Beau and his twin brother Levi were born and raised in Chicago, IL. Their mother, Paige, was a nomad wolf for many years of her life but settled with the Marshall Pack or "Marshes" when she was pregnant. The boys weren't raised with a biological father but the pack was their family, close-knit and protective over one another. They were a mostly peaceful group, integrating well into human life but with full acceptance of their werewolf instincts every full moon. Beau and his brother Levi were raised with care on how to handle their gene and raised to not see other wolves as their enemy. It was common for the Marshes to be called upon by smaller packs when in need, existing as backup to strengthen numbers even if they weren't a violent or outwardly confrontational group.
For many years of Beau's life, he and his pack simply lived normally and fairly. He was a good student and just a run of the mill guy. He became a firefighter when he left school, because helping and protecting others was a trait instilled strongly within their pack. He was there at the drop of the hat for any of the pack's needs too, and all of them were. Whenever other wolves called upon the Marshes, Beau and his brother were right there with them. Twelve years ago, the numbers were severely underestimated against a large coven and the Marshall Pack was massacred. Beau and Levi managed to escape and were the only known survivors.
At only twenty-four years old, the Sullivan brothers were alone and packless and in a sad twist of events became nomads much like their mother was before they were born. They drifted from city to city, town to town, unable to find somewhere to call home for two years until they eventually learned of the Jones Pack in Georgia. With nothing to lose, they arrived there ten years ago and life became better. While it didn't ease the pain of their loss, belonging to something mattered and Beau respected the warmth and fairness that Ethan led the pack with.
Over the years Beau formed a strong bond to each of the pack members, particularly a close friendship with Tammie Jones which he realized meant much more to him as he saw her enter a chaotic relationship with Ryan Cross. Beau kept his mouth shut for years, not wanting to ruin their closeness. It wasn't until they were already settled in Hollow Cove that a relationship emerged between Tammie and Beau, lasting only six months before she claimed it clearly wouldn't work. That was only a few months ago, and Beau still can't quite understand it.
Since arriving in Hollow Cove, Beau has ensured to help the town as much as possible but is visibly uncomfortable sharing close quarters with vampires. He knows it's wrong to blame an entire species for the actions of one coven, but he doesn't think many vampires differ from one or the other. He keeps his head down, as always, and powers through for the sake of survival because the Jones pack are his family now and he doesn't know what he'd do if he lost that too.
