The Big Gundam Watch, Part 12: Mobile Suit Gundam F91
Tumblr media
Back when I started doing these write-ups, I was pretty certain I was just going to ignore F91. Reading up on it at the time, it was clearly an odd duck: it’s a standalone movie in the Universal Century timeline that takes place 30 years after Char’s Counterattack and 30 years before Victory Gundam, so outside of the manga-only continuation Crossbone Gundam, it didn’t seem worth checking out. But as I and found myself enjoying more and more of the Gundam franchise, I figured I should check it out anyway, especially since the F91 and the Crossbone Gundam are really cool designs.
As it turns out, I really like F91! Unfortunately, this is in spite of some major flaws, mostly stemming from the fact that it feels like a TV series they had to condense into a two hour movie... which it turns out is literally what happened:
Tumblr media
So with that put out right at the start, let's get into it:
THE STUFF I LIKED:
I promise I won't start every entry like this, but with the knowledge that this was originally going to be a TV series, I think "the gang" they introduce is perfect. Seabook, Cecily, Seabook's Little Sister, Grumpy Techie, Normal Kid, Team Mom Punk Girl, Seabook's Cowardly Rival, a bunch of kids like the White Base Babies/Shinta and Qum, a literal actual baby- that's a Burger King Kids Club right there, perfectly suited to TV hijinks. Of course, you can't do a lot of goofy, ZZ-esque hijinks in a two hour movie, but they manage to slip some stuff in, and in isolation I thought they were mostly pretty fun.
I'm also really fond of the actual crew of the Space Ark, because they collectively remind me of my favorite version of Bright Noa; people way out of their depth and doing their best with way too much responsibility while being relentless dogged by Federation war hawks who- in a pleasant contrast to War in the Pocket- are maybe the scummiest bastards they've ever been.
Tumblr media
With those two things mentioned; I don’t think it’s much of a secret that F91 was almost certainly an attempt at soft-rebooting Gundam. I think it was a noble attempt; unlike Wing, which I regularly derided as “the Universal Century again, but with arbitrary differences”, the differences here feel more considered. For example: Seabook is an amalgamation of Amuro, Kamille, and Judau, Cecily Fairchild is F91’s equivalent of Sayla Mass, but also, she also fulfills the role of a grown-up Mineva Zabi, and the F91 itself is actually pretty special compared to all of its contemporary mobile suits because of Seabook's mom's quirked-up design.
Visually, I really love this movie. I'm not very good at describing visual stuff, so I tend to avoid saying much more than "it's good" or "it's bad", but this movie uses a lot of unusual colors and lighting compared to what came before. Like, I would describe the most commonly reoccurring color in this movie's palette as "periwinkle", and this shot from the first conversation between Cecily and Iron Mask really highlights how important lighting is in this animated feature, which is not something I typically think about when watching animation.
Tumblr media
Speaking of: it's crazy to think Unicorn's Riddhe Marcenas was never The Biggest Cuck in Gundam, because Iron Mask has been occupying that position since 1991. Not just literally, but every single word he says and action he takes is just barely not seething. Explicitly mentioning he came to terms with the guy his wife ran off with right before murdering him with psychic powers just to make her sad is peak Cuck Behavior.
Tumblr media
Way back in my Hathaway review, I talked about how much I liked the scene of Hathaway and Gigi having to navigate a mobile suit firefight on foot, and for how good that was, F91 actually outdoes that movie. Like, not even 10 minutes in do we get the scene of the baby's mother getting instantly killed by a shell casing, and this is before the fighting starts in earnest.
Tumblr media
I pointed this out in a separate post but man do I love the space rescue from Final Fantasy VIII, so finding out that (barring this movie having taken it from something else itself) F91 was the origin of this was a genuinely delightful way to end the movie. Also, even without that comparison, there's is something powerfully romantic about the visual of clinging to your loved one in the endless, uncaring vacuum of space.
Tumblr media
THE STUFF I LIKED LESS:
For all the things this movie must have cut, there's an equal number of things it didn't and just rammed in there anyway, like the subplot with Annamarie and Zabine. In a ~50 episode TV series, they could have stretched her growing resentment towards Cecily, defection from the Vanguard, and ultimate clash with Zabine over like 10 episodes, and her death at his hands and his cold dismissal would've had way more impact than it did over the course of 10 minutes.
I mentioned before, Cecily is both a "what if" of an older Mineva Zabi as she appeared in the Zeta/ZZ, which also makes her the blueprint for Mineva Zabi as she actually appears in Unicorn. The flaw here is the Ronah family: unlike the Zabis, who rose to power and infamy with cloak and dagger, the Ronah family just... exists? And they have enough power and resources to form a fighting force as threatening to the firmly entrenched (but arguably stagnant/in-decline) Federation as the Crossbone Vanguard? It'd be easier to handwave if F91 took place, like, 100 years after CCA, but with only 30 years it's just bizarre.
Also not to let Cecily off scot-free, it's very not flattering how easily she fell for the absolute monarchy meme. Like, ok, she's 17 and definitely in over her head, but when Seabook came to rescue her I still don't understand why she was like "no, it's too late, they already convinced me facism is based".
Tumblr media
Wiki diving on this subject indicates the Ronah family is basically a new money family that bought an old money name to sound more important, which is delicious, and even sort of ties in with Iron Mask being a Cyber-Newtype, but that's not really present in the movie. Never a good thing when I have to wiki dive to understand something better.
Speaking of this movie only taking place 30 years after CCA: this is not at all the fault of F91, because at the time it was made nothing had else had really been written to have happened aftere Char's Counterattack, but it's very weird to see people who should know better be like "there used to be these people called 'Newtypes', and a special kind of mobile suit called a 'Gundam'".
Tumblr media
The Bugs are comically stupid. If I were being charitable, I could chalk this up to Iron Mask being a seething cuck and wanting to be as cruel as possible to the people he's killing, but the idea that self-propelled heat seeking sawblades are a more viable method of mass killing than the gas attacks in Zeta is bananas. (I wrote this right after watching F91, and now that I've had the chance to think back on Zeta- specifically how the first colony we see that got hit with the Titans' gas attack was still uninhabitable years later- I can kind of see the rationale behind the Bugs, but they're still very dumb)
Most of the mech designs in this are pretty great, but I gotta say I'm super disappointed with the Rafflesia. I kept waiting for it to bloom into a dope-ass Qubeley/Kshatriya lookin' thing but it was just the Final Weapon from Mega Man X4.
I mentioned I liked the mobile suit designs, but the Crossbone Vanguard in general is not beating the Star Wars allegations.
Tumblr media
OTHER OBSERVATIONS:
I aspire to own the BEAUTIFUL LIFE TOMINO jacket in the way that other guys with different brain problems than me aspire to own the jacket from Drive.
Tumblr media
There was a bunch of stuff in this movie I thought was very funny, intentionally or otherwise:
Despite how horrifying the scene gets, the War Museum fight kicking off with the curator announcing/revealing that the name of the museum is "Roy's War Museum" killed me.
Tumblr media
Seabook jumping off the maintenance platform and audibly shattering his knees is incredibly fucking funny.
Tumblr media
However, Seabook's mom hopping on a moped and immediately eating shit is maybe the single funniest scene in any Gundam media ever.
Tumblr media
You're right, random citizen attending the Crossbone Vanguard propaganda rally: beam flags ARE awesome!
Tumblr media
This sentence is just a literal observation of what's literally happening in the scene. Like, thinking about it, most attacks on colonies from space in the Universal Century would necessarily come from what would technically be considered "underground" because of how they're designed, but I'll be damned if it doesn't sound poetic. Tomino strikes again!
Tumblr media
I've talked about SPEEN before, but it has literally never been SPEEN-ier than F91. Like, here's over a full minute of So Much Fucking Spinning (with the dub audio, where they added in sound effects for everything that's spinning for some reason):
If you don't count the numerous manga follow ups: lol, lmao
Tumblr media
IN CONCLUSION:
In an alternate universe where F91 had the chance to be the TV show it was intended to be, I think it would have been successful in trying to soft reboot Gundam. There's a ton of stuff I really like about this, but the execution is lacking because of course it is, and judging it as is without considering hypotheticals, I'd probably put it about on par or just a hair above Char's Counterattack. It has almost the exact same pacing problems I had with that movie, but because it's effectively a clean slate and a single, unconnected, complete narrative, it winds up being a less frustrating watch.
Tumblr media
Next up: Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory! This one is a coin flip, because I don't think I've ever heard a single complementary thing about this outside of Cima Garahau's design and the fact that it's a beautiful 90's anime OVA, but it takes place in a timeframe (smack between 0079 and Zeta) that is just so rich with potential that even if it's bad, it should at the very least be interesting.

Akane Banashi Volume 1: On That Day
Tumblr media
I'm both surprised and almost a little saddened that Akane Banashi is the first Rakugo manga I'm reading officially in English. Now, that doesn't mean I hate Akane Banashi, but my heart was stolen by a story about a girl(s) performing Rakugo a decade or so ago now with Joshiraku. Seriously, you should check it out (as well as Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu, the anime is outstanding. I'm yet to read the manga, which is available in English print). In spite of that immutable number one (and two) spot, Akane Banashi breaks into the English market as a first-time experience for many readers with Rakugo. Because of that, I feel like there's a lot to discuss, both as a story, and a manga that attempts to depict the very idiosyncratic practice of Rakugo.
So, what's Akane Banashi about? Well, as the name denotes, it's a story about Akane, our main character. Just to offer a quick aside with a question first: what's the difference between 'Banashi' and 'Monogatari'?
Great thing to ask! Banashi is typically reserved for Rakugo stories, while Monogatari is used for general purpose storytelling. It's a nice little nod to the purpose of this manga.
Anyways, we're following Akane on her journey to become a Shunichi, the highest level of Rakugoka (a person that performs Rakugo) after her father was expelled from his school six years prior. It's a solid idea that builds upon feels of frustration, regret, and comeuppance, but one that I think may suffer from nearsightedness. Only time will tell however, so let me get into the details!
Tumblr media
The story is established quite well, as we plant the seeds of Akane in her childhood to allow them to grow. It tackles her nature as someone that refuses to stand for mistreatment or twisting of the truth, and will confidently stand her ground in those moments. While some might not be all ears for this prologue aspect, it sets up the justification for Akane's actions quite well as she enters the Rakugo world to effectively clear her father's name. Do I think it could have been handled better? Definitely, yes. However, for a first-time author and second-time artist, I think the choice in brevity was a good idea.
Moving into the present, we breeze through characters and performances rather quickly here and there, and get introduced to a whole host of characters along the way. I really like that they establish the scope and scale of Rakugo early on so that we're not stuck in a vacuum in regards to it. Other performers and schools are shown, how their relationships and the business of it works, so on and so forth. The breadth of Rakugo on display is solid in that sense, and is nicely complimented by a handful of characters that exist adjacent to that world.
However, if there's a complaint to be levied with the characters, then there's actually two (I lied about there being one). The first, Shinta/Tooru is not present active in the present tense of this first volume. The second, the existence of any long term female cast members is not apparent. The latter isn't as bad as the former since it's just the first volume, but the first issue feels like an oversight in regards to Akane's character. She mentions her frustration in regards to her father's expulsion in flashbacks, and her mentor/teacher Shiguma expresses his regret in the present, but despite that Shinta is not a sore spot for Akane in the present. His name doesn't dance upon her lips, nor does his past give her pause. For someone driven to do this because of her father, it feels odd to have such a vacancy in his daughter's foray into Rakugo.
Tumblr media
Let's take a closer look at Akane as the leader character. I really like her energy, that tenacious disposition is a great angle to view Rakugo and her journey through, and you might even argue it's almost a necessity to really sell her story. But I also think bringing so much heat makes it easy for things to boil over. Her frustration and dedication end up finding ways to hold her back, not in the moment or the experience where she needs to be (that's well done), but rather after the fact where everything should be clear. The best example is when her senior under Shiguma, Kyouji, gives her feedback on how to cater to her audience. She doesn't really grasp the significance of his words, and makes the same mistake when working under an Izakaya (essentially a pub). Making mistakes isn't bad, and both pieces as isolated instances are well done. It's just that the bridge between them doesn't match up. Akane's response to Kyouji's feedback doesn't match up with where she ends up in the Izakaya.
Tumblr media
Well, I think I've talked about the more drab broad strokes of the story well, lets talk about the very act of storytelling, that is, Rakugo. As I said earlier it's really well thought out from a technical point. The nature of Rakugo is established, the details in terms of business, practice, and the greater world of Rakugo are fleshed out as well. The biggest thing I feel that it's missing in terms of Rakugo is the experience. The feel of it, the flow, the vibe, the very core of it. The expressions (really good) and some of the visuals reflect that, but it's always interrupted. It's hard to fully grasp the nature of Rakugo and how it appears to viewers of it. Just what that experirence is like when it's a single person sitting on an otherwise empty stage telling a story involving countless characters and settings. Just for reference, I highly recommend this documentary/performance uploaded by The Japan Foundation to understand what Rakugo really is.
youtube
And now, into the home stretch: the art. The artist is somewhat experienced with middle of the ground results. I don't expect anything out of this world from them. The character designs are solid and creative, and the art is expressive enough to get some of the key points across.
One thing I just don't like however is the use of white/negative space around the characters to make their placement/layering easier. I just really dislike how it impacts the overall art and the feel of it since it separates characters from their environments.
Tumblr media
The biggest challenge with the art though is that it can really sell this story short sometimes. It can find the right character expressions and what not to wear, and has pretty alright character acting in that regard, but it's missing the most important piece: fluidity. Much in the way that Rakugoka must fluctuate between several characters and a narrator, the art should reflect that. But it doesn't. The art style, the line weight, the shading and hatching, even the paneling. None of these pieces reflect the differences and idiosyncrasies of the Rakugoka (aside from Kaisei in one instance), and I think even worse is the potential for a rut in terms of the limited expression we have. The overlay/superimposition certainly has its places, but when used as the only way to interact with the story being told it will find a way to stagnate very quickly.
So, from the top. I think there's potential. I mean, it's a female lead shounen series about Rakugo. Obviously it's good enough to have lasted as long as it has and to get an English release. It's just whether or not it has the ability to live up to the potential that rests within the series. The story shows immediate promise (if not with a fork in the road in the further future), the characters are well established and varied, but the art and expression of the series places a firm limiter on these aspects. I'm hopeful to see the chains slowly loosen as the series goes on though, so that we can see the full potential of Akane Banashi.

12 Days of Manga 2022
 Day 4: Top 3 Shonen
Aka... the Shonen Jump award... Yes I am a hypocrit who complains when people only ever read stuff from Shonen Jump/Viz but also it’s the best deal in comics and it would seem I ONLY read shonen from them this year so.... to continue to be incredibly basic:
1) Akane-Banashi by Yuki Suenaga and Takamasa Mou from Shonen Jump (T: Stephen Paul L: Snir Aharon)
Tumblr media
[ID: Japanese Cover for Akane Banashi Vol 1. Akane wears a pink floral Haori/Kimono jacket over the top of her school uniform. She points a closed fan outwards and pulls a goofy expression. Behind her are panels displaying scenes of Tokyo as well as her Father performing Rakugo]
“Shinta Arakawa wants nothing more than to pass his shin'uchi exam-the test that would make him a top-rank headliner and master storyteller in the traditional Japanese art of rakugo. His daughter Akane Osaki is his biggest fan, and even practices the same performances while watching him behind the closed door to his study. When rakugo master Issho Arakawa expels everyone after the exam with no explanation, a fire is lit inside Akane. From that day forth, she has had one goal-to avenge her father and prove his art was worthy of the title of shin'uchi.
Akane unintentionally stirs up the specter of scandal when she's discovered taking informal lessons from her father's former teacher, Shiguma Arakawa. But she's about to make even bigger waves, because her first step in climbing the ranks of rakugo performer from zenza opening act to shin'uchi headliner is exchanging her secret lessons for formal training. And she'll still have to finish high school and navigate her relationship with Shiguma's existing apprentices, all while learning that becoming a stellar rakugo performer takes much more than just being good at performing!’
This series has been making it into a lot of people’s top 10s this year and justifiably so. The series stands out from the usual Shonen Jump fair, not just due to its female protagonist, but also how at its heart it’s an educational slice of life. Sure, it maintains those shonen tropes of following your dreams no matter what, but Akane’s dreams are far more realistic than becoming hokage or curing your sister from being a demon or even winning the sports ball world cup! She just wants to become a top level Rakugo performer, something reasonable and possible to achieve. Okay, the whole “seeking revenge for the way her father was treated” is very Shonen, but equally Theatre Kids are just Like That(TM). In many ways, that attitude is what makes her such a realsitic character. I’ve seen some say that she’s a little bland, but I think it’s more that she’s not a caricature of something we’ve seen a thousand times before. Akane feels like a girl I could have met at my Drama Club, and that’s great!
The thing that really stands out to me though is the way Mou’s artwork helps to emphasise that this is a story about story telling! I’m always a fan of seeing an art style change as a way of ehancing story telling and scene adaption and Mou shows a real master class in this as they swap between a contempoary manga style, and one clearly inspired by traditonal japanese ink painting. It not only helps differentiate between what is ‘real life’ and what is ‘Rakugo’ but it also makes the book more visually engaging and apealing.
In recent chapters, we’ve also seen this come into being as a way of giving more information about the characters and the nature of their performances. I’m very excited to see where this goes, and how the style develops as the series goes on. After all! We’re only on chapter 42! There’s plenty more left to go.
I’ve also been very interested in Paul’s localisation choices throughout the series. It must have been a lot of hardwork to make sure that the visual puns for the Rakugo stayed, and I wonder how much of the translation is Paul’s own personal translations, and how much is established rakugo? There must have been a lot of research involved in preparing for this series, and being able to get it out on a Simulpub schedule is truly impressive! If anyone can point me towards interviews about the process of translating this series, I would be very grateful.
It’s also not often an SJ series keeps honorifics in, even though it makes sense for a series so deeply centered in Japanese Culture. I don’t think Manga has to be culturally educational, but I think that is definetly one of the appeals of it: especially for younger readers. International theatre traditons are not something commonly taught in schools, and whilst I did have a tiny bit of a grounding in Japanese Theatre Tradition thanks to a combination of Crash Course Theatre* and Case File no. 221: Kabukicho** it’s been so much fun to learn more about the history of the medium and the art as a whole!
I think some of the more recent chapters have been perhaps trying a little too hard to ‘say something’ about gender in the industry, and I’d rather we had a little more show and little less tell, but on the whole I’ve been really enjoying the series and know that my past teenage theatre-kid-weeaboo self would have been eating it up with a spoon!
Now if Akane could get some female friends, that would be great too.
*Crash Course Theatre does not cover Rakugo, but it does cover Noh, Kabuki and Bunraku and is absolutely worth checking out! But prepare for mispronouciations.
** a modern day Sherlock Holmes adaption in which he presents all his deductions through the art of Rakugo. David Wald is one of my favourite ever Mrs Hudsons but I had to drop it because the show did my girl Mary Morstan so dirty
2) My Hero Academia: Vigilantes by Hideyuki Furuhashi and Betten Court from Shonen Jump (T: Caleb Cook L: John Hunt)
Tumblr media
[ID: English Cover of Vol 13 of MHA: Vigilantes. Koichi in an All Might Hoodie sends a circular blast off at No. 6 as he raises a glowing fist to punch him. Bomb people in civilian clothes and full black face masks reach up to grab Koichi and pull him down to the ground. An explosion is going off in the background.]
“In a superpowered society, there is nothing ordinary about evil anymore. Heroes, trained and licensed to protect and defend the public against supervillains, stand above all the rest. Not everyone can be a hero, however, and there are those who would use their powers to serve the people without legal sanction. But do they fight for justice in the shadows, or for reasons known only to themselves? Whatever they fight for, they are called...vigilantes.”
As one door opens, another one shuts... and another has something stuck in the hinges that makes it refuse to close even though the cold is getting in and I think this metaphor is getting away from me?
Vigilantes has been an absolute highlight of a Superhero series for me! At first I was put off by some of the over sexualisation of Pop, and how it appeared to be suffering from Watchman-itus but as the series settled down and found its own pace it lost all of that and instead became a solid and enticing addition to the Superhero canon!
Because to me, that’s the fundemental difference between mainstream MHA and Vigilantes. Mainstream MHA upholds the hero society status quo, and we’re never really taught to question it. Not just in terms of the inuniverse discussions but those for the medium as a whole. I used to read it weekly, but I’ve honestly gotten so tired of the “Women In Fridges” level misogyny that I had to stop. I’ll get back to it eventually just to say that I saw it through to the end, but I think I need to let it end first.
Meanwhile, I felt like Vigilantes didn’t out stay its welcome at all! It was the number of volumes it needed to be to tell the story it wanted to tell. Whilst Pop could have been treated better, she was still given her own development and character arcs! I also liked how her “empowerment” came with her putting on MORE layers, not taking them off! She found her sense of self through frumpy jumpers and goofy hats, not bikini bottoms and push up bras which is something we so often see in the Superhero Medium.
This was something that was reflected throughout the series, to be honest! Especially with Midnight, who quickly became my favourite character in the franchise due to this series. Furuhashi and Court took Horikoshi’s one note sex joke and gave her development, an actual character, and a street-flasher-style-trenchcoat to keep her warm, covered up, yet still in character. Given that Mainline MHA runs in Jump and Vigilantes in Jump+ you would think this would all be the other way around? The series aimed at older teens featuring the skimpily dressed version and the one at young boys the more modest version. But that’s manga for you I guess!
You can tell the deep love the Vigilantes team has for superheroes, with their knowing nods to heroes like Nightwing (hey, remember when I wrote a literal essay about how great his butt is?) in a way that actually helps aid the narrative rather than just fun time cameos. They’re also open for discussion, encouraging the reader to question the world around them, and to not even take what’s in the book at face value! They expect to be critiqued in the future, and want you to do so. It’s very refreshing given how mainstream hero media is turning more and more towards coppergander.
I really feel as though Vigilantes is adding to the communal hot pot of comics creation, and not just borrowing; and that’s why it’s in my top reads!
3) Spy X Family by Tatsuya Endo from Shonen Jump (T: Casey Loe, L: Rina Mapa)
Tumblr media
[ID: English Cover of SXF Vol 9. Becky Blackbell sits in a pink George Nelson Coconut Chair wearing a pink, green and white pinstripe dress. She has a toy sheep with her, and varrious items scatter the floor underneath such as school clothes, shoes, handbags and gift boxes]
“An action-packed comedy about a fake family that includes a spy, an assassin and a telepath!
Master spy Twilight is unparalleled when it comes to going undercover on dangerous missions for the betterment of the world. But when he receives the ultimate assignment-to get married and have a kid-he may finally be in over his head!
Yor's on assignment and finds herself up against a gang of assassins on board a luxury cruiser. Meanwhile, Loid and Anya each discover that bombs have been planted throughout the ship! Will their best efforts be enough to save the vessel?”
I understand that many people are perhaps a little sick of SXF being on every recomendation list and top 10, but what is perhaps most frustrating is that it does genuinely deserve to be there. It’s like complaining that someone’s favourite food is cocolate. Maybe it’s a little cliche, maybe it’s a little obvious, but it’s a very valid answer!
I’ve loved getting to see Yor’s character development as something beyond the goofy milf everyone wants to drool over. (Thank God this year’s Anime Waifu is an actual adult who is written with constant agency, and not a big boobed teenager). Yor’s sweet, she’s caring, she’s got some big questions in her heart about her role in the world, not just as the fake mother in this fake family but also the very reason she’s still killing for a living. What is she out here to defend? What does it mean for her future? And how has her relationship with Anya and Loid altered her world view?
I especially loved having Yor’s intense action sequences where she must fight off spies and assasins to defend her widowed client and child, being contrasted with Loid’s panic that if he isn’t enough of a “Cool Dad” Anya will leave him and the mission will fail.
I don’t know if it’s because Endo worked as an Assistance to Kato on Blue Exorcist, but there’s definitely a “drinks his respect women juice” vibe in his work that is absent in a lot of SJ titles (looking at YOU Horikoshi). Even when they’re gag characters like Fiona Frost who on the surface is just there to be a Yandere in love with Loid, she’s still treated with a level of professional respect not found elsewhere. She’s a highly competent agent, who also happens to be deeply and obsessively in love with Loid. Something highly relateable, if we’re all being honest. Endo is even able to do the “School Girl has huge crush on Adult Man” and make it highly realistic (as far as a comedy setting goes) and leave it with no shadow of a doubt that absolutely nothing is going to happen between the two characters.
Now I think this is probably one of the only SJ series to regularly pass the Bechdel-Wallace test? Of course the test was originally conceived based upon how difficult it is for Lesbians to see themselves portrayed in media when women weren’t even allowed to talk to each other and things that weren’t men, and therefore it is perhaps a little irelevant to mention. However, given how easy it is to interpret Yor and Loid’s relationship as Queer Platonic, and the overall “family of choice” vibes the series gives off, I don’t think it is too far reaching to say that the series has the potential for queer inclusivity.
Again, I can see why people are frustrated to see SXF being plastered all over the place, but I’d be more frustrated if it wasn’t. This is a must read series, for all ages! I’m excited to see where the rest of the series goes, and know that once we get Sherwood’s full backstory I am going to be a crying mess on the floor.
Thank the gods for lactose-free chocolate ice cream....

I could argue that there are some saving graces about certain female characters in Zeta (aside from Lila, she was a queen thru and thru), but damn they did Fa so dirty and the worst part is that (to me at least) her situation is so weirdly... "real", she wanted to be a pilot like everyone else, but since she's good with kids (and seems to be the only person on this god-forsaken ship who actually gives a fuck about them) and she's a girl everyone pushes her in the direction of being their babysitter, it's always "Fa look after the kids", "Fa, how are the kids" yada yada... and I kind of get why she would settle for the role everyone expects her to accept, everyone is forcing it on her, there doesn't seem to be anyone who would support her own ambitions
maybe I'm just copying with this interpretation tho
also... why the fuck are those kids even there? i get that in MSG 0079 the kids didn't really have anywhere to go so they just stayed on the White Base but those two? why the fuck did Quattro even bring them on if he's not looking after them or taking them anywhere??? (still haven't finished Zeta, but I doubt that's gonna get answered)
sorry for rambling
sorry if this spoils zeta for you but youre looking around at posts about it so i guess it doesnt bother you much.
so heres my thing about the female characters in zeta, right? their saving graces are almost all conduits for them to be the boosters to male character's arcs. Either Jerid or Kamille. Even Haman, who by all means is the female character in Zeta with the most practical affect on the narrative and ability to voice her opinions and thoughts, is often framed via Char. Its a serious consistent issue. Reccoa is a sexual assault survivor and its pulled out as a surprise reveal in the last 5 seconds of her life and it retroactively makes her portrayal... kind of disgusting? that being said Fa does get it horrendously and she singlehandedly kind of undoes whatever progressive statements about feminism zeta tries to make. like, there are a lot of characters in the series with being misogynists as a character flaw, which is fine. but the idea that women shouldn't pilot mechs is kind of... right? In the narrative. The female pilots are either waifish hang-ons who suck (Sarah, Fa, Reccoa, Mouar) or they're irrational, impossible to control and prone to fits (Four, Rosamia, Reccoa). The exceptions are Lila (competent but killed because of the Jerid Woman Event Horizon), Haman (a Newtype and therefore a secret third gender), and Emma (does not care about her femininity which is supposed to be tragic (also gay! which is some great rep there.)) When Katz is a bad pilot, the series goes "Ok Katz get it together or you'll die." but he keeps getting to go. There's a period of time where Bright just says "lol no Fa is not launching in the Methuss, she fucking sucks."
ALSO YEAH I DO NOT KNOW WHY SHINTA AND QUM WERE THERE? like i kinda like them they were obviously introduced for levity and it was well needed but like. lmao.

Hi ocean! I loved the new chapter. I almost thought shinta would become Sakura's summon. That would make it easier for her to be accepted into the uchiha🤭. And Izuna going wild was just🤩🤩🤩👌. I always see him as a softy(i love that) but i really like this side of him too. Sakura being pampered by the girls was so sweet. I couldn't wait to see how the guys would react seeing her all made up. I hope madara don't go overboard😉. You're such wonderful writer. I sometimes wish i could see ASiT as an anime😊.
Take care😘😘
I missed this ask until now, whoops. Thanks for the praise.
As for Shinta, nah, Sakura has her hands full with the mujina, who are also clingy, jealous little creatures. Sakura’s journey to be eventually accepted into the Uchiha clan has only just began haha she’s on good terms with Naoko, Madara, Izuna, even Kagami. But the older members might not be as quick to embrace her. Izuna did turn into a soft guy the more the story developed. He could have been anyone but well, his more sensible personality often balances out Madara’s wild one. That being said, he is an Uchiha through and through, and I feel they all have the capacity to go feral when pushed in the right way.
I do like Sakura having friendships with people outside of the love interests and don’t want to neglect those or cast them to the side. Technically, they have seen her dressed formally before she met the clan heads waaaay back when she hadn’t been in the past for that long. This is the return of that Sakura but just for a different occasion. Madara is…well….maybe he’ll surprise us all.
An anime! Based on my fic? Well I can’t say I wouldn’t be interested in watching. 😆 I would love to see the animation of some of the big fight scenes that have happened so far, Sakura’s new powers, and all that good stuff. But I also think characters like Izuna who hardly get to appear at all in canon being given extensive screen time would be a real treat. Characters like Toka too, for that matter! Then there are my OCs…hmm yeah dont get me started! Lol

Here is another little one shot with my o/c. Enjoy
Bakugo was just relaxing in the common room when Shinta got back. She came in flopping onto the couch not paying attention to if anyone was sitting there. She was tired, as she laid her head down the side of her face was met by a leg. She looked up quickly to see who she was laying on to see that it was Bakugo “your fine loser, just get some rest” he said in his normal nature but in a softer tone and she just laid her head down and closed her eyes some. ‘Damn she really is beautiful’ bakugo thought to himself as he ran his hand over her side following each and every curve. Shintas body reacted to his touch pushing into his hand as what sounded much like a purr came from her lips. Bakugo scanned the room seeing the coast was clear continued to trail his hand over the sleepy angel in his lap. “I want to make you mine” bakugo whispered into shintas ear. Shinta grumbled some before looking up at him “really?” Shinta asked him smiling softly. She had a crush on him as it was.
Bakugo smirked “yes. Your gonna be mine you got that” he said grabbing the back of her head pulling her into a kiss. As soon as their lips collided things went from gentle and soft to fiery and passionate. As things between them heated up they had removed parts of each others clothing. Shinta was now just in her shirt the same for bakugo as they panted looking into each others eyes. “Get over here you Angel. Time to make you mine” bakugo growled seductively before pulling her on top of him. The movement was so smooth Shinta didn’t really know what happened until she felt a new warmth pushing it’s way inside her. “I’ll be gentle at first” he grinned as he heard a moan escape her lips. That moan set him off and he slammed her down bottoming out in her. Both of them attempted to moan loudly before they stifled each other’s moans. “Be quiet or the others will hear you. Your mine and I don’t share” he said in his iconic cocky tone. Shinta grinned “then stopped talking” she said as she began to rock her body against his while she began to bounce.
Bakugo moaned and tilted his head back in enjoyment. His hands cupping her ass for support As he began guiding her movements. Before two long bakugo was on top of Shinta with her face in the couch. The gentle nature had ended bakugos pace was primal by this point as his movements got sloppier and his own moans getting a bit loud. “Now be a good girl and take it all” he growled at the beauty below him with one final rough thrust he bottomed out one last time. That last thrust pushed him over the edge. Shinta feeling his release she felt that tight knot in her stomach release as well. The two slowed to a stop before bakugo removed himself from the tainted Angel below him. “We should get cleaned up before dinner” he smirked grabbing his pants handing Shinta hers

Mobile Suit GUNDAM: ZZ (It was fine)
Tumblr media
Finally got around to watching this after Zeta, and it started fun and ended controversial.
Pros:
Music is good
Some of the female characters are badass (Emary is a joke), namely Roux, Chara & Haman kick serious ass
Haman Karn existing (That is all)
Kamille Bidan
The heavy use of Newtype powers
Lighthearted tone
It’s not as dark as Zeta
Judau is a confident, well spoken main character who knows what he wants. High energy.
The tragedy of the Ple clones is gripping, wish it got more attention
The interchangeability of the pilots (Everyone used each others Mobile Suits ALOT, very nice)
Fa & Kamille are still the best Zeta pairing
Fa gets active in what’s going on, and has grown up considerably maturity wise. (Proud)
It’s retro
Tumblr media
Cons:
It’s not as dark as Zeta
The Argama kids (excluding. Leina, Qum, and Shinta) are fucking annoying
Mashymre’s conclusion was underwhelming
Mashymre basically disappears for a good chunk of the show for no reason, then just shows up in the end
Chara & Haman are highkey pedophiles (Judau is 15, they’re both over 20)
Not enough adult supervision on the Argama to check those kids
Bright got mad soft (Need more slaps)
Judau had way too much freedom to mouth off
Beecha & Mondo were a recurring problem
The character arcs are borderline contrived because the teenagers rarely suffer any real consequence for their dumbass decisions compared to Kamille who straight up got old school Military “correction” Thus the ZZ kids changes and character developments come toward the very end, instead of a natural progression throughout via consequence.
Things just happen to them, and they react. (Ex. Elle likes to hit people when upset, Beecha FINALLY slaps her back, shocking her, but literally at the end of the show. Defeating the potential of her maturing to keeping her hands to herself through the show)
The worst offenders are the kids not having enough adult supervision or consequence for their mistakes. Judau deploys without authorization so many times, he gained a reputation for it, then Mondo did it, then Roux did it; No real consequence, just sit in the brig, come out and do it again whenever you’re in a bad mood.
Shinn Asuka energy, but at least he saved a girls life.
These kids just do whatever the fuck they want, and it’s insufferable.
And so is the “Adults bad, because their War kills the innocence of children”;
Which is a sound message yet the narrative conflates that with: Let’s write most of the Adults as conniving scumbags that ruin everything or just don’t understand their folly.
And reprimand for the kids never happens, and the kids learning from it never happens because Adults just don’t get it and we kids are the real victims here. Literally “Kids Rule” the Anime, but with Gundams. The message gets caught up in the lackluster character beats.
In contrast to After War X Gundam EP12:
Tumblr media
Garrod left with Gundam X unauthorized for a childish reason, to get souvenirs.
Jamil gets hurt trying to save him from a situation he got caught up in, and Sara slaps him for fucking up. He leaves again with X because he felt like everyone was against him, comes back, saves the Freeden ship. Instead of bygones, Jamil tells Garrod the conditions of his refuge on his ship:
Tumblr media
ZZ, eat your heart out.
Unless he’s authorized, he’s not taking the X.EP12, he could’ve done the same shit again after Tiffa is taken, but he stops in his tracks because he’s learned to control his impulses.Garrod leaves to spy on the enemy, Jamil checks him and says “If you’re leaving, go alone”, aka Do NOT take the X.
What does Garrod do? He leaves the X and takes a jeep. If this were ZZ, the brat woulda took the X
And as Jamil said himself:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He would not have learned to know his limits, if it weren’t for correction and reprimand. Development after consequence is how an Arc works.
Beecha & Mondo literally defected to Neo Zeon because they didn’t “like” the Argama, then defected back over to the Argama because the Zeeks were bullying them lol.
Pathetic.
And then they get access to Gundams, the bridge, and one of them Captains the new ship, somehow.
Can’t make this shit up. They commit a War crime, fit for death or a court martial (Roux even says this) and one of them ends up in Command the new goddamn ship.
NOT Roux? Who was an already established La Vien Rose crew member, older, is good at giving Commands.
No SHE doesn’t command the ship, BEECHA does, the defector. Get tf outta here, her rump shoulda been in that Captains seat and he shoulda been kicked off the ship with Mondo.
Tumblr media
Then after all this, to show their development or that they learned their lesson. Beecha literally trips Judau by the foot during a combat situation, and steals ZZ because he was jealous of people praising Judau’s skills; And almost gets killed because of course. Never really punished.
Mondo steals the Hyaku Shiki in a hostage situation because Torres rightfully points out how spoiled he is despite his fuck ups. Thus the boy’s reaction is get emotional and do exactly what the man is criticizing, but this time the situations works itself out. And people praise Mondo because by some miracle no one was killed, which is beside the fucking point. Being LUCKY THIS TIME doesn’t make him right, and Torres apologizes when he shouldn’t have.
BULLSHIT. And no, this show was not written by millennials, but it damn near prophesized the problem this society has:  “Everyone’s a winner” energy. Jfc, i felt like these kids were U.A. dropouts, they’re so entitled.
Both situations are after they’re accepted back on the Argama, somehow. No change, no evolution. Just the same shit for 30 something episodes, until they decide to nut up after the 45 episode mark because “war” & FINALE time, i guess.
No organic change, they just got there because somebody died i guess.
Tumblr media
Point being. The Main issue i have with ZZ in 47 episodes, AWX did perfectly. In under 12 episodes. Almost as if the writers saw the issues in ZZ and fixed them in the 96′ After War X Gundam series.
Best thing about ZZ is Haman, no cap
ZZ Gundam, Fun ride, serious at times, good themes, but held back because it’s too juvenile.
Best parts were when Kamille and Haman were the plot point focus of the episodes, when things finally got serious, both times Leina reunited with Judau, and when the Kids were working together not being dick heads..
Solid 5/10 not bad nor above average, Gundam SEED Destiny is technically worse to an extent in terms of writing but i would rather watch that than ZZ again. Those teenagers are too annoying.
A shorter episode format (25-30) would’ve helped things be more focused, condensed, along with fixing those writing hiccups to make the characters less frustrating.
Too many episodes with plenty of worldbuilding and annoying main characters.
Either should’ve been an OVA or Hamans anime in the first place.
