Absolutely obsessed with the Water Margin theme song. The voice breaks on the high notes, the call and response + ‘hey yas’ you hear in work songs, the simple marching beat, the use of trad instruments.

"Chapter 1" has been posted! 10k words in 10 days yet again! Prelude and Chapter 2 have been revised. as well. No big revisions for the rest of the work. Probably more small inclusions throughout the work but nothing substantial.
FF.net link
AO3 link
Now, I can finally work on "Chapter 29." The end of Chapter 28 ended on a cliffhanger. Unfortunately, I have no idea how that cliffhanger went with readers. Such is life writing an English Water Margin fanfic. E.G. Mine's the second registered fanfic for Water Margin on FF.net and the first crossover. Too bad my written Chinese isn't advanced enough! I'd think it would get more eyes if it were in Chinese.
My only hope for an increase in the Water Margin fandom is the success of the upcoming Water Outlaws novel that has great reviews so far... or I may just need to add in that tag to my fic eventually.

I'm going to just assume that there's no major Shui Hu Zhuan rep in Iron Widow because they're all Fucking Gay, which is forbidden in mecha pilots because (spoilers)
it only takes one pair trying to switch up the seating for the super classified secret to get exposed.
Also, given that all 4 classics exist in book form, and with 2 of them also having their characters in the main story, it's not beyond imagination that the Liangshan crew exists, stole a mecha from some failed attempt to capture them, and had their strategists mod it to be gay-compatible.
Or heck, with a canonical mage they can just DIY.

Playing Water Margin: A Tale of Clouds and Wind from Steam, in my own installation of emulator Mednafen: I copied the "game" file from the "res" folder where Steam installed it, renamed it to an .md file, since it's a Mega Drive game ROM : ), zipped it, and ran it with Mednafen.
Thanks @lunaticobscurity for pointing it out! Also they reviewed the Taiwanese Mega Drive bootleg it came from, in 2009: http://lunaticobscurity.blogspot.com/2009/05/shui-hu-feng-yun-zhuan-mega-drive.html

Danmei and Baihe C Novels and Manhua Officially Licensed in English
Things are getting licensed fast enough that keeping a list like this up-to-date is basically impossible, but I saw someone asking in the tags so I figured I'd try. All titles are danmei unless otherwise noted (very little baihe is licensed so far). I've included Chinese titles and linked novelupdates for each title when I was able to find them, but sometimes publishers change the original titles so much that I can't track them down, apologies.
Basically: this is everything I know of as of April 12, 2024. There might be more. I tried.
For the latest danmei news, Danmeinews.com is a great resources.
Note that some of this information was sourced from this Carrd, last updated in March 2023.

-
Honorable Mentions:
There are a handful of titles I know of that are official translations of C Novels, where the C Novels aren't danmei or baihe but are often treated as adjacent within fandom (as in: I've seen people shipping characters from them, lol). I've included two above under the entry for titles from Aloha Comics (Link Click and Nirvana in Fire) and here are a couple others I currently know of:
The Grave Robbers' Chronicles (Daomu Biji) by Nanpai Sanshu (six volumes are available in English from Things Asian Press
The Legend of the Condor Heroes (She Diao Yingxiong Chuan) by Jin Yong from St. Martin's Press
Romance of the Three Kingdoms (Sanguo Yanyi), attributed to Luo Guanzhong, available in multiple translations
The Seven Heroes and Five Gallants (Zonglie Xiayi Chuan), attributed to Shi Yukun, there are two translations to English listed at the linked Wikipedia page
Note that to the best of my knowledge both of these are considered very substandard translations. I've personally read the official DMBJ translations and... yeah... and I've heard the LOCH translation is also mediocre.
I will add to the "Honorable Mentions" list if I find any other more mainstream titles with official translations.
Please don't come at me for including a couple classics. The characters shippable, what can I do? I've written fic for Romance of the Three Kingdoms...
-
A handful of other licenses are mentioned on the Carrd I linked at the beginning of this post; I have no idea the status of those titles and wasn't able to find information on them while putting together this post other than what was listed on that Carrd, so I've omitted them.
As a final note, I've personally purchased from every printer on this list EXCEPT Monogatari Novels (I'm holding off because of the controversy and will see how things play out) and Chaleuria (which I vaguely knew existed but nothing beyond that).
Seven Seas translation varies but the editing is general strong and the editions are sturdy and nice. Extras that have come with final volumes are lovely. I am buying literally everything they publish except for You've Got Mail, due to information about the author that was shared with me that the author is a transphobe. Note that Kinnporsche by Daemi is not danmei as it's Thai (and I've heard unsavory things about the author - I don't have a link for that as the information was shared with me on Discord, and I encourage you to do your own research rather than taking my word for it). No judgement if you make a different choice than me, to be clear, I'm just sharing the information I have and why I personally am not buying the books). Note that Seven Seas isn't without controversy, especially for treating their contractors poorly resulting in them unionizing. Some people have also been unhappy with the fidelity of their translations compared to the original Chinese (I've been satisfied personally but ymmv).
Peach Flower House has inconsistent inconsistent editing quality, but the books are very readable, and I'm excited that they're working with translators such as E. Danglars. I haven't bought any of their special editions so can't speak to their extras, but I've bought all their print translations and will continue to do so going forward.
I just got my first title from Via Lactea last week and finished reading it on Sunday, and the translation read very well and there were minimal errors. It also came with a bundle of cute extras, which I wasn't expecting and pleased, and writing this post has caused me to cave and spend $150 to buy the rest of their books. Thank you, tax refund. (Should I spend this money? No. Did I anyway? ...)
No Rosmei titles have actually shipped yet, so I can't speak to their quality, though the previews they've shared on social media (as outlined here, for example) read decently and I'm optimistic. The cover art is also lovely, and they've been communicative and responsive, for example they've already issued a statement related to a recent controversy over perceived poor marketing for At the World's Mercy.
Tl:dr, the above is absolutely everything I personally know about mlm and wlw Chinese novels and manhua that have been licensed for English publication. I hope it helps someone.
Now go forth, and buy some books!

for modern AU fics - what chinese media did diaspora consume?
making this post because some of us in the diaspora server were having a chat about what Chinese media "Diaspora Chinese" watched in the 90's - 2000's (and even sooner than that) while not having access to satellite chinese media or streaming services - this is in the context of writing modern AU fics based off Chinese media/novels (so your main character's grandpa or uncle is not, in fact, watching an episode of Friends or Shortland Street or something as flavour text because sorry what the hell-)
We generally watched a lot of stuff on VCDs, including bootlegged and non-bootlegged movies, shows, anime/donghua. My household had a whole VCD album of this, and a lot of VCDs (even if they were pirated editions) would have a fancy hardcover box with a magnetic clasp and some artwork representing the show on it.
All of this is Mandarin - so not TVB stuff, because I'm from Northern China and I don't know any cantonese - but Canto friends, please feel free to add to the list! This is mostly stuff my parents liked to watch, or I liked to watch with them, with the exception of a few which I mainly watched with friends/cousins when I was maybe (in most cases) eleven/twelve years old onwards. This is a pretty personal list, meant to give people general idea of a possible "ballpark" of sorts, and by no means exhaustive.
Now, for the list of shows which I can confirm I had or someone I know had on VCD or some kind of offline media format lol (I'll try add release year stamps and links to the EN wikipedia where possible):
Period dramas (mostly Qing Dynasty stuff):
Huan Zhu Gege 还珠格格 (1998, April-) This is a classic, so many memes come from this show; hugely popular series, basically cemented Zhang Tie Lin's face as the face of the Qing Emperor for about a decade. Tie Chi Tong Ya Ji Xiao Lan 铁齿铜牙纪晓岚 (2002-2010) - I loved this show as a kid and watched all four seasons on repeat with family... The "trio" in this show are well known and loved.
Amazing Detective Di Ren Jie / 神探狄仁杰 (2004) A very popular and addictive show. Ok now the Big Four:
Romance of 3 kingdoms 1994 / 三国演义 (1994) - a classic that has had many remakes, my older cousin would play this on repeat...
Hong Lou Meng/红楼梦 (1987) - another classic with many remakes, but I think the most recognised by the public one is the 1987 one.
Journey to the West / 西游记 live action (1986) - I think the 1986 version of the live action is the most recognised one. *Shui Hu Zhuan / 水浒传 (1998) - I am not too familliar with the live action of this one in my household tbh bc my mum doesn't like it lol (she keeps saying it's too depressing) but I'm sure it's up there with the rest of the big four, if anyone has an opinion on this one please let me know!
Modern setting shows:
My dad loved all the Sun Honglei (孙红雷 - actor name) stuff, iirc it was a lot of MinGuo period espionage stuff, your shanghai 1920's sxc aesthetic. This actor has been around since 1999? Qian Fu (潜伏)was very famous, and Ren Jian Zheng Dao Shi Cang Sang (人间正道是沧桑)。 These were around '08 and '09.
Chuang Guan Dong - 闯关东 (2008) (Baidu link, sorry - couldn't get an EN wikipedia one). This show was huge when it was airing, everyone was watching it. I was pretty young but even I watched it and got invested ... and I thought it was such an "old person" show at the time lmao. Xiao Bing Zhang Ga / 小兵张嘎 (2004) (sorry, again Baidu link) - yo, anti-japanese war movies set between 1937-1945 were crazy popular - this is one of them and was very popular):
Donghua/Anime (all the stuff kid me watched and some which I didn't but were popular):
喜羊羊与灰太狼 (2005-) Calabash Brothers / 葫芦兄弟 (1986-1987) Black Cat Detective / Hei Mao Jing Zhang 黑猫警长 (1984-2010) Lan Mao Tao Qi 3000 Wen 蓝蓝猫淘气3000问 AKA 蓝猫 (blue cat) (October 1999 - Present) Legend of Ne Zha 哪吒传奇 (2003) Journey to the West/Xi You Ji 西游记 This was truly the Donghua I grew up on from when I was a bb, the OP song and ED song are classic bangers all kids know. Slam Dunk/ 灌篮高手 - People truly watched a lot of anime that may or may not have been terribly dubbed into mando (possibly canto too). Late 80s and 90s kids were all over this, and Dragon Ball, Crayon Shinchan (labixiaoxin).
Taiwanese Dramas:
This is mid-late 2000's, I would be remiss to not talk about the Taiwanese dramas of this era. Mike He, Rainie Yang, Wu Zun (amongst many, many others) were huge. Stuff like Dou Niu Yao Bu Yao, it started with a kiss, Hua Yang Shao Nv (Taiwanese version of Hana Kimi) were all pretty popular. Not sure if these shows all hold up in 2023, but boy were they popular at the time.
Note about CNY:
For CNY, people would try to tune into 春节联欢晚会 (the CCTV official CNY show) at that One Friend Who Had China Satellite TV's house. Zhao Ben Shan / 赵本山 was a comedy staple, and the show would often feature people from the music industry to perform. Eventually these people became more and more relevant to my gen and Jay Chou etc started appearing.
Last but not least Xian Jiaaaan 仙剑:
In 2005 I was all over 仙剑奇侠传 (Chinese Paladin), based off the video game. This show was crazy popular and probably sent me and a whole lot of other kids into Xianxia / Wuxia hell (and Hu Ge hell, and later I came back to love Liu Yifei). Thank you. The OST is a true banger.

Wang Chuan Feng Hua Lu (忘川风华录) Masterpost
Tumblr media
Wang Chuan Feng Hua Lu (忘川风华录) is a Vocal synth (Vocaloid and SynthV) music project. It consists of songs themed around different figures throughout Chinese history. The project is a collaboration between different artists and creatives, with music and videos featuring prominent traditional Chinese elements. The project's title translates to "The Records of Magnificence of the Wangchuan" - In Chinese mythology, "Wangchuan" (or River of Forgetting) is a river in the Underworld that can rid one of their past life's memories, similar to the river Lethe.
A mobile game adaptation has also been developed by NetEast. Unfortunately, I haven't played it so I can't give much insight on it. However, I assume that its premise is similar to that of the idea behind the project as a whole: all these historical figures meeting each other in the Underworld after they died. Maybe.
You can find all the songs on Bilibili. The official Weibo can be found here. The game's website, which includes all characters appearing so far in the game, can be found here, and its Weibo can be found here.
(If you prefer YouTube, I've also put together a handy playlist. Please know that most of these videos are reposts though, so please watch the original Bilibili MVs if you can!)
This blog is where I will be posting everything I feel like I need to say about the songs in this project. A lot of it is lifted from my Twitter account but will be in much more detail. Note that I probably won't touch collab songs, or songs that don't focus solely on the project's own characters.
Disclaimer: I do not speak Chinese, nor am I an expert on Chinese history. Therefore, I cannot reliably translate the lyrics to these songs, nor my words should be taken as gospel. I am merely a nerd gushing about my hyperfixation.

Finally put the time and effort into fixing Shui so they got a design that actually looks decent!
The major change was giving them a different shirt design and messing with their acket a bit so it laid around their shoulders. I also tried to make the spikes in their hair a bit less awkward, and I'm actually really enjoying how it looks. I also changed their eye color.
Shui, as a refresher, is the third member of my shogun steel team dungeon! They were originally a Beylin Fist trainee who moved to America (after not getting into the new Team Wang Hu Zhong). They like a competitive atmosphere, and tend not to respect people and treat them rudely. They are constantly challenging Avery for leadership of Team Dungeon, tend to fight with Trey a lot as he's the only one who will really banter with him, and they disrespect that Anya only cares for beyblade as a doubles sport. I promise you they'll eventually go through (gay) character development.

7/29/23 "Chapter 1" Update
Total Words in Chapter: 8994
Total Words Written Today: 2189
Excerpt (drunk history from Wang Jin):
"I have a guess on what '吳下阿蒙' means, Ma," slurred Wang Jin. "You're cleaning up your own vomit this time," Ma commented, then smiled. "But go ahead, Jin'er. Amuse me." "When the Empire was fractured due to a bunch of ball-less eunuchs driving the elves into hiding and that fatass Dong Zhuo ruining everything, three kingdoms emerged out of the chaos. In the Wu kingdom, there was a general named Lü Meng. That guy was a badass. But other people didn't think so because that guy was illiterate. Then, after the Drunkard King of Wu said, 'Hey, my beloved Lü Meng, go read some military books. I'd be a dumbass if not for reading. Not saying I want you to turn into a weakling scholar like the ones I really want to beat up right now, but can you please read the Art of War and other stuff? I'm getting tired of listening to Lu Su trash your ass in council meetings. "Instead of beating Lu Su to a pulp like I would've done, Lü Meng studied and became such a learned person they outdebated everyone in the kingdom, especially Lu Su. Lü Meng did not lose any muscles though, lifting weights and running every day while studying, so they still could fight, like me. Lu Su eventually prostrated before Lü Meng and ketoued, begging for forgiveness. "So I think 吳下阿蒙 means a dumbass becoming a smartass through studying hard. Like I'm doing. Except you always called me a smartass, Ma."
Productive day today and we're getting close to the end of this chapter! Tomorrow I'll finish it and revise it, then I need to revise chapter 2 accordingly before I post "Chapter 1".
Couldn't resist putting some Romance of the Three Kingdoms references in here.
Parts of what I wrote made me cry so... we'll see how it goes with the readers :P

oh yeah I finished Iron Widow around 2 months ago - I guess it's okay? It was great fun to see names I already know but I definitely wouldn't have been as into it otherwise. My brain is also too steeped in longer books (really this just means Agatha Christie) so the probably-YA-genre-induced pace felt almost breakneck, like wait how is this chapter already over wha--

Seeing this was hilarious because my main complaint (besides not having any main Shui H- *smashed by bunny mecha pestle*) is that the book cannot tonally decide whether it's a modern/future setting where the characters are Chinese, but do speak English, or still a traditional ancient Chinese setting in a futuristic environment, that's translated into English on a meta level. There's words like "alpha male" which is very modern English, but then there's literal Chinese from various time periods so which is it?
(plus the Chinese isn't translated at places so non-speakers have to look stuff up themselves. So it's trying to appeal to Chinese speakers with those "easter eggs" but also has modern western words to appeal to non-Chinese people which results in the vibes clashing. Also I get that "skies" as an exclamation is from 天呐 but there's "heavens" which is more natural in English, so what do you want to be, book??)
anyway I feel that knowing Chinese both cursed me and also meant I actually could like it.
Read it for book 2 Di Renjie, please be good/10
forgot to add: I'm glad that Gao Qiu ended up being a dipshit and was killed off, but this just ups my standards that the original Gao Qiu was a *conniving* kind of dipshit in a quick and dirty sense, and not the spider web sense, and his death was too painless, but we can't have everything.

Wario’s invasion fleet? From Water Margin: A Tale of Clouds and Wind, aka the unlicensed Taiwanese Mega Drive game Shui Hu Feng Yun Zhuan from 1996, translated to English and available on Steam/GOG/current consoles. (Not sure about GOG but on Steam at least you can just take the “res/game” file and run it in an emulator, it’s a Mega Drive ROM. : )
(That title is from the title screen; Steam lists it as “THE Tale of...”)
