What the Whoniverse could learn from RTD's first era:
The Stolen Earth and Journey's End are one hell of a two parter that has The Sarah Jane Adventures along with Torchwood to crossover into the main series. Characters and elements from each spin-off it utilized as a means of helping the Doctor against the greatest threat the Daleks have ever posed.
However, it also involves aspects that few wouldn't be able to catch on quickly. I hadn't seen The Sarah Jane Adventures since it never made it to the States as far as I know. However, I knew that Sarah Jane was still investigating alien phenomenon as "School Reunion" showed. Of course, she'd have a supercomputer in her attic. I also assumed that Luke was a boy she adopted before learning his origins in "Invasion of the Bane."
Kind of wish we saw Maria and Clyde when Luke called them with their actors on the sets of their homes. Maybe have them gawk at the Daleks from afar and hold on as the Earth is towed back. Maybe a cameo of Rani if they felt bold enough to promote SJA Series 2.
Torchwood, on the other hand, I had seen in full before Series 4 and as such, I was able to appreciate some nods to the spin off such as Gwen calling her husband, Rhys, or telling Ianto that she'd rather go down fighting like Owen and Tosh.
However, I wouldn't have needed to have seen the spin off since I'd have known that Jack had a team in his sect of Torchwood since Series 3. We're just meeting them in the main series proper.
Additionally, we don't need to know about Rhys to understand that Gwen's calling her loved ones during this worldwide crisis. "Owen" and "Tosh" are easy to identify as previous members of Torchwood that had died in their dangerous line of work. Their two seasons of adventures are just self-contained enough to be basically backstory for them.
As such, Series 4's finale feels less like you had to have seen both spin-off to understand and more like they pique your interest in them. What was Jack up to during Series 3 and 4? What's going on with Sarah Jane these days?
That's really what the new Whoniverse should take a cue from. The Main Series crossing over with the spin-off should have us feeling less like we missed out and more like, "Cool, I know what I'm putting on my watch list ASAP."
Thought?

Doctor Who, etc. (2005-today) Marathon
Want to marathon the Whoniverse but feel intimidated by the amount of episodes and not sure when to watch different shows? I've made a list of all the best and/or plot relevant episodes to watch of Doctor Who (DW), Torchwood (T), and Sarah Jane Adventures (SJA).
Reasons for inclusion have been provided for those who wish to have more agency, minimal spoilers. Any episodes excluded are fully optional and therefore can totally be watched in between the episodes on this list. Inspired by Xerblade's List of Important Detective Conan episodes.
Technically, no spoilers as long as you watch School Reunion(DW S2:E4) before SJA. School Reunion (re)introduces us to Sarah Jane Smith [she was a companion of Jon Pertwee(3rd Doctor) and Tom Baker(4th Doctor) in Classic Who]; a year passes for Sarah Jane between DW S2:E4 and SJA S1:E0.
Torchwood can only begin after the Series 2 finale, since some events of the first season are direct consequences of that finale. Pretending that Torchwood ended with Children of Earth.
Note that different distributors are now counting Special episodes as either the last episode of the previous series or first episode of the following series. Originally, they had no episode number. Therefore, some episode numbers may not match this list.
If you have any suggestions about this list, please contact me directly!
Divided by the Doctor Who Show-runner:
Russell T Davies 2005-2010 Era
Steven Moffat 2010-2017 Era
Chris Chibnall 2018-2022 Era
Russell T Davies 2023-Present Era

In the lead-up for the anniversary, the missus and I have veen watching one story from each season of Doctor Who. We've ended up with a bit of a mixed bunch, as we've aimed to combine old favourites, episodes we haven't seen for a while and classic serials she hasn't seen yet.
As we neared the end we wanted to stretch it out a little so we ended up inserting some specials, minis and the Doctor's appearances on The Sarah Jane Adventures. We've had quite a mix of story lengths and styles as we've gone on.
1. The Edge of Destruction
2. The Time Meddler
3. The War Machines
4. The Tenth Planet
5. The Enemy of the World
6. The War Games (2nd half)
7. Spearhead from Space
8. Terror of the Autons
9. The Curse of Peladon
10. The Three Doctors
11. Planet of the Spiders
12. Robot
13. The Brain of Morbius
14. The Hand of Fear
15. Image of the Fendahl
16. The Ribos Operation
17. Nightmare of Eden
18. Meglos
19. Four to Doomsday
20. The Five Doctors
21. Planet of Fire
22. The Mark of the Rani
23. Mindwarp
24. Dragonfire
25. Remembrance of the Daleks
26. The Curse of Fenric
27. The Unquiet Dead
28. School Reunion
29. The Sound of Drums/Last of the Time Lords
Mini: Time Crash
30. The Sontaran Stratagem/The Poison Sky
SJA: The Wedding of Sarah Jane Smith
31. Amy's Choice
SJA: The Death of the Doctor
32. Let's Kill Hitler
33. The Angels Take Manhattan
Mini: The Night of the Doctor
Special: The Day of the Doctor
34. Mummy on the Orient Express
35. Under the Lake/Before the Flood
36. World Enough and Time/The Doctor Falls
37. The Witchfinders
38. Spyfall
39. Once, Upon Time
Special: The Power of the Doctor
I feel like we should have watched the TV Movie but we'd not long ago watched it and she says it's stupid. (Of course it is, that's not a bad thing.) At least we got McGann in with NotD. We actually managed to get pretty much everyone in there!

A Whovian Watches Star Trek for the First Time: Part 020 - Another Prison Break
Star Trek: Enterprise - Season 1 Episode 21 - Detained
Tumblr media
The episode throws us right into the plot, even in the cold open, by having Mayweather and Archer wake up in some prison, where the majority of the prisoners are Suliban. Supposedly, these people have been at war with the Suliban Cabal, presumably part of the Temporal Cold War that's been brought up a few times throughout the series.
It appears however, that most of the Suliban in the prison aren't part of the Cabal. The Prison's warden was at first compliant, but immediately turns a lot more hostile once Archer starts talking to the Suliban. This episode unmistakably a Sci-Fi metaphor for the American Interment Camps in World War 2, and the episode even directly states the connection. The situation was covered with the weight the topic deserved.
Archer has a lot of great moments in this episode, making friends with the Sulibans. Honestly though, this should have been at least partially a Mayweather focus episode. We have two crew members in the prison, the script seems determined to give all the story beats to Archer. As a Character, he's definitely been given the Shaft in this series. Twenty episodes in, and he's only really had one focus episode to shine in, and even there he was overshadowed. In this episode, his lines are mostly just questions to get exposition, nothing really character development. Can some episodes please give this man something to do?
Aside from Travis feeling more like set-dressing than a character, the episode was a really really good episode about Governmental Racism and overreach during times of war. This was a very enjoyable episode, and I loved seeing the plan come together. And leaving it on the somewhat dark not of the question "will they be alright" unanswered was brilliant. This episode certainly hits my top 5 so far!
This episode does notably share a title with an Episode of the Doctor Who Spin Off, Class. I'm still deciding on my arbitrary rules for the Same Episode Title Segment thing, but I'll do it here. I don't like Class, but blocking off Class but still doing SJA and TW for these things would feel wrong. So:
Comparing my Enjoyment of this Episode with a Doctor Who Universe Story of the Same Title
Class: Episode 6 - Detained
Tumblr media
This is gonna be a long one, it's probably going to be my only chance to talk about this Spin Off.
Class as a Spin Off series was cancelled after one season, and it's a common opinion that the BBC never really gave it the chance it deserved, it aired during the 2016 gap year when the general audiences weren't thinking about Doctor Who and the marketing for never really made it clear who the audience was supposed to be.
That said, when it aired, I didn't really like it. It felt like it was combining the worst aspects of the other two Spin Off, SJA and Torchwood, without anything that made those series so great. It also doesn't help that SJA and TW were given multiple seasons to outgrow their issues, whereas Class only has it's very flawed 8 episode run.
But wider series issues aside: This particular episode of Class consists of the main cast, minus it's most interesting character, trapped in room in the void with an alien rock called "The Prisoner" that radiates Anger, and when you touch it makes you relive traumatic memories when you pick it up and speak unspoken truths. Which is good set up for character drama. And, they do a lot with it. Every character does get a shot with the Rock. This is one of the better episodes of Class, and one that sadly showcases what could have been if the series was given a chance, but the episode focusses way too much on the Relationship dramas of the cast, and I simply don't care enough about these characters to be invested in
Both the Enterprise "Detained" and the Whoniverse "Detained" were enjoyable, but I found the Star Trek enterprise episode a lot easier to watch, mainly because enjoying the Class episode involved getting over the fact that I don't like the series as a whole.
I hope I don't come across overly negative about Doctor Who in these title sharing ones, I swear I do actually like Doctor Who, Star Trek episodes just seem to share titles with the Bad Parts of Who

{edit note: I’m going to compile a list of every single Doctor Who episode, short, mini, special & spin-off in one place that I started back in 2019. These posts are going to be by season, I’ll be working on getting caught up and then go back and transfer my posts here…}
Doctor Who Season 12 (13th)
DW 1201-Spyfall Pt 1
Oh. My. God. I won’t spoil it, but the ending of this episode is BONKERS. 😭 I am SO PROUD of Chibnall for actually writing a decent episode with STAKES AGAIN!😭 I warms my 2 hearts so much! Decent build up too. Still wish the gang all had more downtime but 🤷🏼‍♀️
Tumblr media
DW 1202-Spyfall Pt 2
Sacha Dhawan as the Master is my kind of energy. I ❤️ his chemistry with the Doctor. I definitely appreciated the female representation of history, but the story itself was a bit clunky. Still, fun! Who is this timeless child anyway? I’ve heard of it before but 🤷🏼‍♀️
Tumblr media
DW 1203-Orphan 55
Come for the twist, stay for the guilt!
To be fair, Jodie has gathered a whole young fanbase that probably needs a tiny lesson shoehorned in for their own good. Probably. It’ll be better if they tied this ep to a future one, so we’ll see I guess. Bonus: Sassy Doctor is back!
Tumblr media
DW 1204-Nikola Tesla’s Night of Terror
This one is just ok, but this usually happens midseason. I kept thinking the scorpion aliens were the Racnoss & got excited; they aren’t.😒 OMG, scorpion queen? Our own Anj Mohindra back in the Whoniverse! She rocked it! I miss Rani & SJA 😢
Tumblr media
DW 1205-Fugitive of the Judoon
Still, as shocking as the climax was, it still felt a bit...done before? I dunno. We had the war doctor. We had the chameleon circuit. I’m glad for the call backs. I guess I’m happy they didn’t already replace the Master!
Tumblr media
DW 1206-Praxeus
So...um ok? We just aren’t going to address the last ep? We’re gonna get another shoehorned environmental message? Cool, cool. Except this ep was balls. The story was so sloppy, I hated it. It really should have been Autons, that would have been so much better.
Tumblr media
DW 1207-Can You Hear Me?
This was a better ep for sure. We got a little more backstory on each of our mains (why is it so hard to write for them? Why do the writers insist on keeping them dull and one dimensional?) and the villain was very good. But still no answers? Cmon!
Tumblr media
DW 1208 - The Haunting of Villa Diodati
I did like this one. I think after my 2 year hiatus of watching Doctor Who, I have a bit different perspective. Still not a massive fan of Jodie’s Doctor, but that’s mostly because she doesn’t ever give this serious air when things in the story get grim. It never feels like there are any stakes. This one was good though. Not a fan of the cyberman plot at all, but liked the Mary Shelley/Lord Byron plot. To see them as just flippant rich people (which they were irl) is really funny to me. Creative and brilliant yes, but also a tad shallow at times. Nobody’s perfect haha.

16, 18, 19
16. Do you re-read old fics? Is there a time in your writing you won’t go back to? I do, every now and then! It's often out of nostalgia - missing not just a particular fandom but also the time in my life when I loved it so much that I was creating content for it, and that fandom experience. I'm definitely far more inclined to go back to more recent fic just because going back too far definitely has a much higher risk of cringe, but I think I'm generally more amused at my much older fic than totally mortified. A few months back I found an old laptop from middle school that had some absolutely batshit fic I have NO memory of writing, and that was a really fun, if embarrassing, throwback.
18. Do you only write when you’re inspired, or do you try and sit down at specific times and write no matter what? I am absolutely terrible at sitting down and writing no matter what, and am guided almost entirely by fickle inspiration. I do try to sign up for gift exchanges and things like that to put some fire to my feet, which is helpful!
19. If you could write an ideal fic, what would it include? Something long and plotty, which is not my forte. The most recent concepts that I'd like to magically manifest into existence are my Succession/Damages crossover AND my SVU/Damages crossover concepts, a rewrite of seasons 2/3 of Succession where Gerri steered the phone call in 2x04 in a different, non-sexual direction and the Roman/Gerri dynamic evolved differently, an SVU AU where Kathy died in Paternity, and a Doctor Who/Sarah Jane Adventures crossover featuring post-SJA Sarah Jane, Twelve, Clara, and - down the line - Missy, Bill, and Maria Jackson (I am single-handedly captaining the JackPott ship!).
There have been a couple of very long-standing fic ideas I've had and have toyed with over the years, some going back over a decade:
Post-School Reunion AU where Sarah Jane joins Ten and Rose in the TARDIS
The Cat Grant Backstory Fic that has been pretty jossed at this point but is still true to me
Sansa/Margaery angsty high school AU
Alas, all of these currently and likely always will live in my mind, or in rambling texts to patient friends, scribbles in long-lost notebooks, word docs on old laptops or Google docs filled with incomplete outlines, etc.

Fond as I am of new, fun, rebooted Mr Smith who has a sense of humour and lets Luke and Clyde use him to play video games, it is quite weird how he kidnaps Luke and tries to fully destroy the planet, but everyone’s still like “Oh well we’ve wiped his memory and he’s good now, so it’s fine” and then are just chill with it.

dw ask game 1-36 and 38-100 DON'T ANSWER NUMBER 37 I DON'T WANT TO HEAR ABOUT CRYING
DaThanks, anon who is probably @truestoriesaboutme!
CHILDHOOD
1. Did you like DW as a child?
Depends. What do you consider a child? I saw Doctor Who for the first time when I was 16 or 17. Does that count? Let’s say that it does. I did enjoy it.
2. Your age at the time of the revival?
16.
3. First DW episode you ever saw?
An Unearthly Child. I wanted to watch it all in order! Still do! My first New Who episode was “Blink,” as forced upon me by @raisegrate. I did enjoy it.
4. Did you have any of the toys?
I didn’t at the time, but I do now. I have a couple of screwdrivers, a Fourth Doctor, an Ice Warrior, and not-quite-Legos of Doctors 1-11. (-WD)
5. Which DW character did you play on the playground?
N/A.
6. Monster(s) that scared you most as a child?
N/A. Nothing scares me.
7. Joke/story you didn’t get as a kid?
N/A. I get all jokes/stories.
8. DW opinion that has changed since you were a kid?
That the only way to watch it was from the very beginning. I eventually gave in and watched New Who before finishing Classic Who.
9. Who introduced you to DW?
Pretty sure I heard about it initially on a forum I went to called The Douglas Adams Continuum. That’s when I started watching the First Doctor. Again, @raisegrate showed me my first New Who. Eventually, I started watching New Who in its entirety with @catastrofries and they started watching Classic Who with me for @rassilonwatchathon.
10. Did you like Sarah Jane Adventures as a child?
Didn’t even know it existed as a child. But I liked it as an adult.
Read more under the cut. There’s a lot!
DOCTOR
11. Who is your Doctor?
One. He’s the first I saw and I’ve went through some of his more than once, due to the podcast, so he has a special place in my heart.
12. Your favourite Doctor?
It varies depending on the day. I quite like Two, Eleven, and Twelve, though.
13. Least favourite Doctor?
Possibly 5 or 13? More because they don’t get a whole lot to do, than them being bad.
14. Best regeneration?
Technically speaking, there’s something about that first one that is still so good. Emotionally speaking, Two’s regeneration is terrifying and I quite like Twelve’s speech before regenerating.
15. Do you like “Doctor-Lite” episodes?
Yeah! They’re all pretty good! Even “Love and Monsters!” Yeah, I said it! (The end is bad, but the rest is good.)
16. Who is the most human Doctor?
One calls himself human a handful of times. Does that count? If not, definitely Five. He seems the most like a regular guy in a weird situation out of all of them.
17. Best multi-Doctor story?
The Day of the Doctor, for sure.
18. Best Doctor monologue?
Eleven’s speech to young Amy in “The Big Bang.” That episode is just solid all around.
19. What do you think TenToo/MetaCrisis Doctor is doing now?
He’s definitely fucked off somewhere and abandoned Rose. He runs a cat cafe that is definitely a front for something, but no one can quite figure out what.
20. Best Doctor/companion pairing?
One/Barbara, Two/Jamie, Three/Jo, Four/Leela, Five/Tegan, (haven’t seen enough of Six, any of Seven, and I honestly don’t remember the companion for Eight), Nine/Rose (that’s the only option!), Ten/Donna, Eleven/Amy-Rory, Twelve/Clara, Ruth/Thirteen.
COMPANIONS
21. Favourite companion?
Classic Who: This is hard. Jamie? Sarah Jane? Leela? New Who: Donna Noble.
22. Favourite secondary companion?
Not sure what this means exactly... My second favorite? If so, I gave three for favorite Classic Who, so one of them. New Who: Rory.
23. Least favourite companion?
Classic: Ben Jackson or Peri. New: Ryan.
24. Best TARDIS Team?
Classic: Two, Jamie, and Zoe. New: Eleven, Amy, and Rory.
25. Most underrated companion?
I love Steven Taylor. I feel like he doesn’t get mentioned enough.
26. Most overrated companion?
Probably gonna get some hate for this, but Romana II. She’s good and I like her, but I was expecting a lot more. I honestly prefer Romana I.
27. Favourite companion’s family?
I love Rory’s dad.
28. Who should have been a companion but wasn’t?
Kamelion. AM I RIGHT? But seriously, Amelia Rumford from “The Stones of Blood.”
29. Favourite (canon or non-canon) DW universe relationship?
Amy/Rory.
30. Who did you not used to like, but really like now?
I hated Tegan when she first came on, but now I love her.
EPISODES
31. Favourite episode ever?
“Heaven Sent.”
32. Least favourite episode?
“Time-Flight” gave me a literal headache.
33. Which episodes do you skip?
NONE. Of course, I’ve not done any rewatches. YET.
34. Best two-parter?
“The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances” are the first New Who episodes that fully sold me on the show.
35. Historical, present day or futuristic episodes?
Give me the future and make it weird!
36. Episode that will always make you smile?
“The Myth Makers.”
37 HAS BEEN REDACTED.
38. Best run of episodes?
“Vincent and the Doctor” through “Day of the Moon” is pretty solid.
39. Best cliffhanger?
“Vengeance on Varos.” Hands fucking down.
40. Favourite Christmas special?
The answer to question 37. “A Christmas Carol.”
SERIES
41. Classic Who or New Who?
Yes please! (Though New Who will take this a little just because the pace is generally a lot better.)
42. Favourite series?
I’m not sure about Classic (I have a harder time thinking of them as different series), but New is definitely 5.
43. Least favourite series?
11.
44. Which series do you skip?
See 33.
45. Favourite series opening?
“The Eleventh Hour.” It’s just a lot of fun.
46. Favourite series finale?
“The Big Bang.” IT’S A GOOD SERIES.
47. Best series arc?
So I don’t sound repetitive and say Series 5 again, Clara’s arc in her last season is great.
48. Thoughts on series 11/12?
I find it largely boring and not well-written. Though there are some things I like! I love Ruth a bunch.
49. How much of Classic Who have you seen?
I’ve seen from “An Unearthly Child” to “The Two Doctors.” And the movie.
50. Who should have had another series?
Doctor: Nine. Or Eight. Or Ruth. Companion: Kamelion, but done better.
MONSTERS
51. Favourite monster/villain?
I love them Fuzzy Chicken Nuggets. (The Yeti.)
52. Most creative monster?
The Silence are an interesting concept.
53. Monster(s) that scares you most?
OAK AND QUILL from “Fury From the Deep.” Fuck those guys.
54. Monster you think is too easy to defeat?
I hate power level questions. Next.
55. Least favourite monster/villain?
I get really tired of the Daleks sometimes, y’all.
56. Monster you want to return?
Chumblies or quarks.
57. In your opinion, what makes a monster good?
The writing. You can do great things with most of them. Even the ones you dislike. Like, I hate the farting aliens, but they are occasionally used well.
58. Daleks, Cybermen or Weeping Angels?
If I had to pick, I’d say... Cybermen. Daleks are very samey and loud. Weeping Angels get less interesting every time they are used. But there’s a human element to the Cybermen that, when utilized, can be very effective and unsettling.
59. Best Dalek story?
The one where Two rides around on ones he made nice.
60. Best one time villain/monster?
I don’t know what it is, but whatever it is in “Midnight.”
ADDITIONAL MATERIAL
61. Torchwood or Sarah Jane Adventures?
SJA is more consistent, but the highs of Torchwood are higher.
62. Favourite Torchwood Team member?
Owen. But like... not season one Owen.
63. Which Torchwood death made you saddest?
See 62.
64. Do you rewatch COE or MD?
I haven’t rewatched anything yet. But I would rewatch COE before MD.
65. Favourite SJA Team member?
Clyde.
66. Mr Smith or K-9?
Mr. Smith is way more interesting. He had a villain arc!
67. Maria or Rani?
Rani.
68. Do you read the comics/novels or listen to Big Finish?
Some. I’m doing them as Patreon bonus episodes for @rassilonwatchathon. I haven’t done much though.
69. If you do, your favourite additional stories?
“The Chimes of Midnight.” I’ve listened to it twice.
70. Do you like DW analysis (video essays, fan theories, etc)?
I do DW analysis for @rassilonwatchathon AND The Dipp. So yes. My fave is TARDIS Eruditorum, though.
I’LL ANSWER THE REST AT A LATER TIME. I MUST BE WITH MY PEOPLE NOW.

Ahh that’s cool! What are your fav Torchwood episodes?
1. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang - Love some 51st-century bois. Plus it has Jack lore (which series 2 is heavy in); the Time Agency, a past Ex and the mention of the overarching plot of s2.
2. Cyberwoman - Despite its flaws (Lisa’s outfit and the start of Gwen and Owen’s subplot) I really like. The fact it’s related to one of the Doctor Who’s bigger invasions, is what really intrigues me. The only other episode that is connected to one of Doctor Who bigger stories are the Sontaran adventure from SJA.
3. Exit Wounds - Not only does this episode more of the 51st-century bois (which I’m always looking forward to) but it also contains Gray, a character who I have a love/hate relationship with. Fun Fact: this episode is probably the one I’ve watched the most. Why? idk, I’m just a Torchwood disaster.
4. Countrycide - The first non-Hub based episode, a fan favourite episode, a creepy one at that. It really shows that not all Torchwood threats are alien, some could just be living around the corner.
5. Fragments - I’m surprised it took the show until nearly the season 2 finally just to give us the backstories to the main cast. Ironically, the episode before two of the said cast gets killed off. Also, have there been any content since really explain Tosh’s story, I felt we only got a chunk of it in the episode. Like how did she end in the situation? What happened Tosh and her mother’s relationship afterwards (after all Jack did retcon Tosh’s mother)
