In the SK8 the Inifnity anime; Adam (voiced in Japanese by Takehito Koyasu and in English by David Wald) is technically the main antagonist. Along with Kaoru and Kojiro, he is the founder of “S” in his teenage. To escape from the political future his aunt trying pushes him he uses “S”. Tadashi knows his secret, who taught him to skate originally during his childhood. Adam has a different persona from Anisuke in the presence of his aunt while at “S”. His usually carefully brushed blue hair becomes spiked and wild, and his red eyes hidden behind an ornate mask, obscuring his identity. He has a couple of outfits while skating, though this is his main one.  Collect all the accessories of Aniosuke Shindo Adam costume from SK8 The Infinity for Halloween and cosplay.

Y'all can keep complaining about the lack of queer representation in anime, and the fact that when there is, it's usually censored. I mean, it breaks my heart to see that in 2022, a certain studio felt the need to cover up a kiss scene with a very convenient shot of a sword (Requiem of the Rose King, I'm looking at you!) Hell, I'm all for demanding more from these studios. It took us a while to get to Yuri On Ice where we had a gay relationship at the forefront (which, might I add, also had a kiss scene that was censored, a choice made outside of the creator's hands), and only about 5 years ago did Bloom Into You get adapted, plus Given shortly after that. Yeah, it's taken way too long for progressive anime to enter the limelight. Sure, there are a few wonderful queer series out there today (ex. Stranger by the Shore & Sasaki and Miyano) but when another series takes a step back from where we are, it's disappointing to say the least. That doesn't mean we should give up hope though. I believe it's important that we're grateful for what we have, and remember that anime won't always spell it out for us (cough cough SK8: the Infinity cough cough), and that's something we're unfortunately going to have to live with. Have hope, my friends. And if you're looking for a pick me up, a David Wald dub is always the way to go!

Gotta say, now that I'm watching the dub to Bucchigiri, I think it's pretty good, and even tries to clear things up in the dialogue, though not to the high standard of SK8's dub since there's no real standouts like David Wald's performance as ADAM.
The closest though has to be Ricco Fajardo's performance as Matakara. I've been following his roles for a decade now, and I'm impressed by his range across the shows he stars in and he manages to demonstrate that range so well here. Inversely, it's Arajin's VA who's new to voice acting, since this is his first major lead role in a dub.
Also a shout out to Shindo's dub VA for playing his first villain role in years and just delighting in chewing the scenery. It really sounds like he's enjoying this.
Yeah I caught a few of the dub clips on X/Twitter and while I do think that the dub cast isn’t as strong as the ones in SK8 (I WILL GET INTO THE SERIES SOON I PROMISE BUT NOT RIGHT NOW), I don’t mind it as I rather let some new talents shine and see how they perform in the long run. Well most of them are names I never heard of with maybe a few exception (Senya, Mahoro, Akutaro, Ichiya and Matakara).
So I’ll give out my opinions on some of the dub cast:
Arajin (Alex Mai): He isn’t bad by any means. I do like how in Episode 2, he made the scene where Arajin is forcibly pulled by Senya funnier than the original. Can’t wait to hear more of his performance.
Matakara (Ricco Fajardo): I only heard him a few times as Matakara but it is decent. It sounds close to his performance as Pandreo in FE Engage but with a much more mellow tone to it. (I don’t know how would Ricco tackle Corrupted!Matakara but I’ll just wait and see once all episodes are up) It’s a shame he doesn’t even mention or like any BUCCHIGIRI?! posts when I felt that it was a pretty decent role he has (tho then again not every VA’s are chronically online)
Mahoro (Lindsey Seidel): She’s ok so far. But I do think her raspy voice when showing her spiteful side felt a little off compared to the original VA where she just lower a few octaves or so but it’s still an okay-ish performance so far.
Marito (Kieran Fullton)- For a new-ish VA, his performance for Marito is just as close to the Japanese performance. I like how he balances out Marito’s playful side but also his sneakiness in some parts such as in the scene of Episode 2 where he asked Matakara about Arajin’s whereabouts before he gleefully says he is going to make him join Siguma.
Senya (Chris Guerrero)- I agent heard much but he does seem to act out the best he can. The part in Episode 2 where he managed to perfectly replicate the performance in the original where Senya is acting like a meow meow is just 👌🏻
Zabu (Daniel Van Thomas)- I think he’s ok but I do have certain issues in that I felt that his voice felt way too deep for a 16-17 year old boy. Still, it’s a decent performance but I preferred the original better (Sorry 😅)
Komao (James Marler)- I think he’s ok from the few clips I’ve seen, almost as close to the JP VA performance but still having some few differences here and there.
Outa (Wyatt Baker)- Can’t say much tbh. (Sorry)
Jabashiri (Alex Hom)- He’s alright so far. I only heard a bit of him back in Apothecary Diaries so it’s a bit surprising he was chosen to play Jabashiri.
Hagure (Van Barr Jr.)- Can’t say much tbh but I do like some of his performances from the few clips I caught of him.
Akutaro (Aaron Dismuke)- I do like his performance as Akutaro, sounds almost close to the original as well esp in that clip in Episode 6 where he ‘thanked’ the whole of Minato Kai and Siguma Squad for being close to his goal.
Overall, those are just my thoughts on the dub VA performance.

Everyone say thank you to Leah Clark, the writer behind the iconic dialogue we’re getting in the SK8 English dub 💕 She didn’t write the ‘bitches & bros & nonbinary hoes’ line, that one was improvised Adam’s English VA David Wald (and somehow amazingly got approved to stay??) but she is responsible for the majority of the other amazing and funny and witty lines in the dub and the cast was singing her praises last night in the stream ☺️💕🥰

[id: the “throwing plate” meme from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, edited so that the person throwing the plate is labeled “Adam’s ENG dub VA,” the person handing them the plate is labeled “Sk8 writers” and the plate is labeled “the script.” End id.]
God bless David Wald 🙏

So yesterday I watched the Sk8 VA panel on twitch, and I wanted to highlight a very interesting point that David Wald (the VA for Ad*m) brought up about representation in media.
Basically, he said that the type of representation they're going for, while not explicit, is definitely there and presented in such a way that LGBT people can identify with it in a healthy way (well, unhealthy in the case of Ad*m, but I digress). We get it, it's there explicitly and intentionally for us, and if the straights want to stick their fingers in their ears and go "la la la" that's fine, who cares, they'll get a fun shonen romp thats well animated, directed, and acted.
But by going with this more subtextual, subtle route, he said that the media becomes more accessible and digestible to young people who might be in denial about their sexuality or gender identity. That by presenting representation in this way, you catch an audience of people who might be questioning themselves and would actively tune out as soon as things become explicit.
That moment was just... So powerful to me, and at that point it just... clicked. That's because I was that questioning gay kid growing up with no formative media to fall on, desperately trying to force myself into relationships with girls to feel normal because I thought it was weird to be gay with no one and nothing telling me it was alright. And I was the same kid who would feel guilty, embarrassed, and dissociative whenever I did see gay media representation and would tune it out immediately, not wanting other people to think I was gay just for watching it.
In all reality, I know we won't get an explicit, canon confession for either of the main ships (Although Jonah and Daman are two seconds from giving me a god damned heart attack and I love it). It is a bit disappointing, and healthy, canonical representation should be something we continue moving towards and pushing studios to allow, but the intent for good representation is there.
And what blows me away is that the VAs are actively playing with the ambiguity, the thing traditionally used to bait the queer community, to let us have those moments of representation, knowing that we won't have been baited through the reveal of an 11th hour straight pairing that invalidates the subtext. Not all representation needs to be explicit as long as there aren't canon contradictions to it.
And to David's point, if even one LGBT+ person who's in denial or is questioning looks at this show and feels a bit more normal and at ease with who they are because of it, even if they don't realize it then and there, then mission fucking accomplished

I’m so glad that the “bitches and bros and non-binary hoes” wasn’t spoiled for me because I loved how I was doubled over from shock and full body laughs when I heard it for the first time with my own ears
(I can’t believe that the line was adlibbed too! David Wald you fucking legend!!!)
