January 1968 - Date Nights
Looks like De and Carolyn went out for some swanky nights in late January 1968. First to see Mel Torme at the famous Cocoanut Grove in the Ambassador Hotel (article appeared 20 January 1968):
Tumblr media
Next for dinner at "Dino's Lodge" which was Dean Martin's restaurant on Sunset (article appeared 31 January 1968):
Tumblr media
A description found says "The tinkle of cocktail glasses… the aroma of fine food… murmurs of sophisticated conversation…waiters dressed smartly in black pants and red jackets with gold buttons… This mood of genteel elegance pervaded Dino's Lodge on the Sunset Strip Saturday night."
In case you were wondering what was served in these places, check out the menus:
Cocoanut Grove "from the 70s":

Dinos from sometime between 1960 - 1970:

The inflation calculator (1968 vs 2023) says $1.75 is $15.48 (hors d'oeuvres), $4.00 is $35.38 (chicken entrees), $6.00 is $53.07 (NY sirloin/filet mignon), and $9.50 is $84.02 (rack of lamb for 2).
- - - - -
Season 2 of Star Trek had finished filming early January 1968 and had not yet been renewed for the third season (the writing campaign was going strong though). De and Carolyn were probably out celebrating the end of filming and also De's birthday (January 20.)
Both articles were from the Los Angeles Evening Citizen News.

A Carlo Scarpa Vase Found in a Thrift Store Sells For $107,000 at Auction
When Jessica Vincent, who raises polo ponies on a farm outside Richmond, Virginia, was shopping at a Goodwill store in that city, she likely had no idea she might come upon a rare and perfectly intact glass vase by a renowned Italian designer that would fetch six figures at auction—but that’s exactly what happened.
That vase, the so-called “Pennellate” vase or Model 3664, by famed architect and designer Carlo Scarpa (1906–78) hit the block on December 13 at Wright Auction House, tagged with an estimate of $30,000–$50,000. It sold for $107,100.
“It’s an amazing story, that this very sophisticated piece of glass finds its way to Virginia,” said Richard Wright, founder of the auction house, in a phone interview. “It was expensive, not mass-produced, and it falls through the cracks all the way down to the Goodwill. It’s not even chipped.”
He added: “And this very charming woman who raises polo ponies finds it, and she isn’t sure what she’s found but she’s smart enough to do her research. She finds the Italian glass group on Facebook, and is smart enough not to sell it for the first offer she gets, of $10,000.”
Standing about 13½-inches high, the object dates from about 1947 and is made with pieces of applied opaque and transparent glass that mimic brushstrokes across the glass’s surface (pennellate means brushstroke in Italian). Scarpa designed it for the Italian art glass maker Venini, located on the Venetian island of Murano.
Wright Auction House described the vessel as one of the rarest pieces the house has offered in a decade of auctions, and in fact only one other vase with this exact color combination is known to exist, in what the house calls an established private collection. The vase was included in its “Important Italian Glass” sale, which also offered examples by designers including Ercole Barovier, Tomaso Buzzi, and Dino Martins.
Tumblr media
The current auction high for a Scarpa vase is also a Venini piece, a Laccati Neri e Rossi from 1940 that fetched about $309,000 at Christie’s Paris in 2012, soaring past its high estimate of about $64,000, according to the Artnet Auction Price Database.
Trained as an architect and designer, Scarpa is known for his architectural renovations, his glass, and his industrial design. He has come in for a renewed round of attention in recent years, for example in an exhibition organized by contemporary sculptor Carol Bove and pairing her own work with his, at the Henry Moore Institute in Leeds, England and at Museion in Bolzano, Italy.
“Venini Glass by Carlo Scarpa: The Venini Company, 1932-1947” appeared at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2013–14. It was while working with Venini, the museum said, that Scarpa “redefined the parameters of glassblowing in terms of aesthetics and technical innovation.” He created two dozen styles of vases, “pioneering techniques, silhouettes and colors that thoroughly modernized the ancient tradition of glassblowing.” In the 1930s and 1940s, their collaborations were on display at venues including the Milan Triennale and the Venice Biennale.

Also can we talk about the foreshadowing?
After replaying the books and finally letting this line set in, the foreshadowing hit me like a fucking bullet train.
(small Ms Hughs appreciation underneath cut)
But Isa was wrong. With Ms Hughs she was quite literally the best principal ever. Sure, she was a bit lenient- but she used to work at a middle school. She knows that kids are kids and she isn't so harsh on them because she knows teens are as wacky as middle schoolers.
(I mean she even got Dino nuggets in the cafeteria the day before she quit. She knows teens love Dino nuggets and she tries to keep up with modern slang)
Because compared to Ms Rivera in one of my playthroughs, Ms Rivera was pretty intense. Like she was usually stern and sophisticated, she also was just... I don't know... Bland? She was good, but she wasn't as nice to see.
Compared to Ms Rivera- Hughs was so fun and crazy, but she is in my opinion one of the best adults here. She knows how teens are and treats them like kids because they literally are still kids, and gives them a sufficient punishment that isn't too hard and actually cares for her school.
Sure she may make her students feel small as she calls them 'little', but cmon- I'd rather have Dino Nuggets to eat for lunch, an option to win a roller rink voucher (even if no one wanted it), be on committees as a punishment, and be able to hug her at the end of the school year then... whatever Isa & Ms Rivera is doing
Ms Hughs is a walking W.
No I'm not debating this, she is, we love Ms Hughs on this blog- if you don't like her, you can LEAVE →

Reading KHR in Japanese (8)
In Japanese, we can get a person's character and personality by the way of speaks. How about:
Hibari
First person : "Boku"
Second person : "Kimi" / ("Anata")
On the whole : Elegant, Noble, Childlike
His way of speaking is a very elegant. The endings of words are soft and the language is not abusive or rough. If you ignore everything about him and just read the letters, he even seems kind and easy to depend on. He is polite but never uses honorifics. We can feel nobility by his speaking. It also has an impression of sophistication and leeway.
But he sometimes chooses the words like a child. The way he speaks is the same, he remains calm as usual, but only one word somewhere is like a child. He often puts things in a nutshell which makes him seem more like a picky spoiled child. But even in such moments, it doesn't forget nobility. Somehow it keeps. How interesting he is.
And that childlike choice of words is also a bit unique. Sometime it can be a bit old-fashioned, or isn't used much in daily life. It's not childish rather than that's like child might say. And it's not feel wierd when such words into his noble way of speaking. Mx.Amano often makes him choose such words like those loopholes. Like, the words a little strange, but if it's say by Kyoya Hibari, it make sense.
Let's take a closer look🐤
His speaking is very emotionally stable. He isn't upset or at a loss for words. He never uses vulgar words even when he is angry. Well, he chooses his words more like a child when he is angry. Or it's closer in nuance to "expressing displeasure" than anger.
He uses "Boku" as first person. It is very classy, but at the same time it is very compatible with him because it sometimes used by children. Japanese often has no subject or objects, but he uses them precisely. Well, when if someone says "Don't fight," to him,he just says "No. or "Why?". (And this refusal is actually quite childishly worded as well.) He often talks or battle with adults, which makes him look more childlike.
He doesn't atempt to call people names as the second person. (But rather than, he doesn't like to refer to anyone in particular in conversation.) The only one who he has done that is Roll. Btw, much softer and gentler when he talks to Roll. And then, he mostly calls people by their full name if it is absolutely necessary.
He uses "Kimi" as a second person pronoun for everyone. But he calls Dino "Anata". Well Idk why. This is a polite expression, so it's not sense of discomfort he uses it to adults. Conceivably only Dino didn't attack the school among adult who Kyoya needed to call by second person pronounce. Or maybe it was Mx.Amano's particular.
Also he uses their full name, or "He", "That person" as third person. In Japan, rarely people use personal pronouns equivalent to "He/She" in daily lives. "That person" is sometimes used, but it doesn't have a good nuance. At least, it has distance impression.
Also he calls Reborn "baby". In Japanese, there are two ways to refer to a baby. And he uses the less common of the two. It is more likely to be used to refer to "existence of the baby" itself rather than to the baby as an individual. At least, it's rare for this call to be made in front of the baby themself. (To begin with, the word is rarely used in any setting.)
Again, there is a nuances he doesn't like to talk about people in the first place. When he refers to someone, he does so in a roundabout way anyway. Finish with the minimum required. Even the way he speaks shows that he is attempts to keep people at a distance and away from him.
His speaking can only be described as "Kyoya Hibari-like". The balance between nobility and very unique choice of words makes a way of speaking that is uniquely his own. His words would be too unique to translate. He has strong-willed and sincerity to belief. And also has clear boundaries between himself and others (well, of course he is).

Brutal
summary: Jeonghan hates the avengers.
pairing: Parent Yoon Jeonghan & Son Lee Chan | Dino
genre: domestic / spy au
estimated word count: 800 words
a/n: Remember folks, copying other people’s works is plagiarism and that’s illegal. Don’t be that kind of person. Anyways, hope you all enjoy it :)

Tumblr media
This had to be the most dehumanizing thing Jeonghan had ever had to do.
Never in his entire existence had he ever been forced to endure such a strenuous and brutal torture on behalf of another. Like seriously, how did the tiny creature of his have the will power to sit through this god’s forsaken movie.
Two to three hours for a movie about people with powers time traveling to save the decimation of their peoples, it was exhausting. Jeonghan had wished to have returned to the underground life for only a split second. But the constant sounds exuding from his son was the only thing keeping the single father sane and grounded.
How Chan came to adore the Avengers must be Jeonghan’s greatest setback throughout his tenure as a father.
‘But then again, most seven year old boys liked this kind of stuff right?’
Jeonghan could only assume so. There was no way his son would be hypnotized by something so fictitious without it being in relation to his former occupation. Much to Jeonghan’s relief, it was not in most ways unrelated to his past career. So his worries about overly-exposing Chan were unfounded when it came to the Avengers. Hopefully it stayed that way.
“Thank you for the movie papa!”
Chan’s elated nature always found a way to bring light to Jeonghan’s broody nature. If being a single father meant enduring hours upon hours of cinema he didn’t understand; just to see a genuine smile on his child’s face… then Jeonghan agreed it was a decent enough trade.
Happiness did take time, the last time Jeonghan checked.
“It’s no problem Channie. But please can we watch something more… ‘fun’ next time?” Preferably some opera or some live theatre.
“What part of Avengers: Endgame wasn’t fun? It had everything! Fighting, jokes and fighting.”
“It would seem we have some very different definitions of the word fun.”
“No, you like watching ancient people screaming. I like watching superheroes.”
Jeonghan’s wipped down to his son’s direction so fast, brain processing and reprocessing his song’s crude depiction of real art.
“How dare you! Opera is a sophisticated art, only the greatest beings take pleasure in opera.”
Chan broke out in a fit of giggles at his father’s defense of the opera. Jeonghan however, puffed up his chest in an attempt to seem more durable in his son’s vision. As if that was gonna aid in changing his son’s mind.
His son’s laughter was one of the most cherished sounds Jeonghan could ever hear. He made that discovery after this one time when he slipped on some baby food that found its way on the floor. That was back during Jeonghan’s first few years as a dad. Chan’s screaming was just about to win over his sanity after he struggled to feed his son, a failed effort to halt his son’s tears. Jeonghan had thought in that moment, he would suffer his very first loss as a parent. Being forced to know he held the inability to comfort his own son.
But some spilled baby food and a single misstep was enough to bring the man to the ground. Oddly enough, he came down in the same manner that most animated characters do when stepping on a banana peel. And with the temporary pain that engulfed him, came out the bursting of laughter from Chan’s young mouth.
Granted, there has been a long journey and change from when Chan was an infant to now as a seven year old. But the sentiment remained. Jeonghan’s typical displeasure equated to some form of laughing outburst from his dear child.
“Don’t worry papa. I still love you and your screaming music.”
Jeonghan could only close his eyes and groan, triggering more giggles to erupt from Chan.
He was lucky Jeonghan loved him.
Love was surprisingly an inauspicious thing for Jeonghan. His parents, his siblings and almost every failed relationship. All of it seemed to have left a bitter taste on the former agent. But with Chan, love seemed different. At the expense of one life, Jeonghan had learned what true love was in this new life.
Chan was the center of his world. Nothing but his smile was the ultimate goal for Jeonghan to achieve. The former spy figured, since he failed at being a son, a brother and a lover, the least he could do is try to be the best father he could. At least then he’d be worthy of being loved.
And eventually through his efforts he was.
“Papa”
“Yes, little one?”
“Can we watch Black Widow tomorrow?”
“Now why would we watch a movie on a spider?”
“Not the spider papa” the happy child laughed out, “The Superhero. It comes after Avengers: Endgame.”
“Another superhero movie?”
Jeonghan’s exhausted tone does nothing to halt Chan’s optimism.
“Yes papa! Please!”
Another brutal couple hours of more superhero cinema he has yet to understand. Damn… he spoiled his son too much.
“Fine. After breakfast tomorrow we’ll come back and watch your revengers movie.”
“YAYYYYY!!!”
Chan’s quick little victory jump into the air and his radiant smile warmed Jeonghan’s heart, and just then he realized something for the hundredth time.
‘Maybe this won’t be so brutal after all.’

I bet the HR Meetings at spider verse HQ are wild. I feel like they have the equivalent of those presentation weeks that American schools do for cultures but it's just for each universe. I'm picturing Dino spidey with a very sophisticated presentation on cultural dynamics in his universe and what replaces the "invasion by time-traveling dinosaurs" trope that a surprising amount of other universes have to deal with. They have a PSA board and the words "Stop getting mad at other spideys for using phrases wrong. They just vary per world" has been circled multiple times for emphasis. As you can tell my thoughts may have gotten away from me.
THIS IS SO FUNNY HELP…. you’re absolutely right too. i would NOT want to work in human resources (spider resources???) for spidey HQ. it sounds like an honest to god nightmare

Idea: Grimlock who's just as intelligent and sophisticated as his Cyberverse counterpart, but he has a speech impediment that forces him to speak like his G1 counterpart in both robot and dino mode.
Like, he's just as intelligent no matter what mode he's in, but his speech impediment makes it hard for him to communicate that.
I dunno, I kind of like the idea his speech impediment is linked to his beast mode. It's a very transformer form of disability, especially with how Beast Mode Grimlock in Cyberverse was still clearly the same bot, just often expressed differently.

Reading KHR in Japanese (1)
I have previously posted about that in Japanese, the speaking shows characters's personality.
Very happily, I was asked to know about the other characters, so here! I'm going to split this into two posts because it's going to be long. Thanks for the request!!( @misteriosasaky )
Tsuna
First person : "Ore"
Second person : thier name (sometimes "Omae"/"Kimi")
On the whole : middle school student-like,mild,childlike
Overall, his speaking is typical of middle school students but also a bit childlike. His speaking is mild style and honest. He is a straight-man in comedy scenes. Including that, sometimes his tone can be rough. He comes on especially strong with Reborn and kids. But most of the time it is like an big brother scolding little brothers.
His *unconscious* choice of words says a lot about his personality. He uses soft words, especially with his friends. When he is angry, he is not intimidating as if he is scaring them. If anything, he appeals to them to understand. We can know he isn't get used to being angry seriously.
He uses the first person most often used by middle school students("Ore"). He doesn't use second/third person pronouns very often and often calls them by name. If he uses them, it is "Kimi" or "Omae". He uses "Kimi" for new acquaintances and close friends. "Omae" is used for kids or his enemies. However, when he is in hyper mode, he uses "Omae" for everyone but Kyoko.
And he uses honorifics and honorific title for older. Like, Ryohei, Hibari or Dino. But it isn't overly formal. When speaking with them, Tsuna's junior disposition is often evident.
However, he doesn't use honorifics or honorific titles for those who were his enemies, regardless of their age. Even to Xanxus. He wary or fearful of those who are no longer his enemies, but he relatively casual speaking although. But, this tendency seems to be limited to those whom he had confronted. When he met Varia at the Arcobaleno arc, he used honorifics toward Belle. I really like the moment that he was confused about whether he should use honorific titles for Squalo when they finished last fight and stay in hospital. He seems to have trouble of distance between many people.
Of course, there are points where it depends on the relationship with the one. Or rarely, as towards Lal, he uses honorific at first but later it can lose.
Especially in the early arc, his speaking shows that he feels inferior to those around him. He feels little nervous and always haven't confident in what he says. He gives up on himself and often makes statement sexpression that deny any possibility from the start like;"I'm nothing anyway","I can't do this anyway" And he tends to keep in mind his confusion about what the other person said or did, or how he felt. Also, whenever he makes a decision, he always asks for someone's help. There is a nuance there that he isn't asking for opinions, but for the right answers. He don't ask "What do YOU think?",but "What should I do?"
His original genuine personality makes his words is always very sincere. His words come straight from his heart. So he is not able to say sophisticated things in important situations. He doesn't have the skill to tell everything in a few word, like the protagonists of other works. He searches clumsily for the right words even while speaking, wondering over how to convey something he wants to say, there is falter in his words.
But therefore, we can feel his words are always natural and real mind. That is why he move people's hearts. No matter what trials he went through, he never lost sight of his virtue.
His speaking style is not very unique. He has the roughness or informality typical of middle school students. It shows his innocent like little brother, sometimes caring like big brother. And maybe nervous or at a loss for words. He is not the type of person who is good at conversation. However, it can tell that he is a kind person. We know he feels or what the other person is to him in the way of speaking, directly. That is another good thing about him.
