“At its core, the Cizeta project was a cunning and daring exhibition that finds its roots within Lamborghini. Following Chrysler's purchase of Lamborghini in 1987, a strong portion of the Italian company's staff had bailed out. In fact, there were more of Lamborghini's original team members working upon the Cizeta V16T than there were on the Diablo project, which was being conceived at roughly the same time.
Cizeta's founder, Claudio Zampolli, had previously been a test driver and engineer for Lamborghini, and following the Chrysler buyout, had found himself in Los Angeles to create his own, world-class supercar. In essence, the Lamborghini brand had never utilized motorsport to sell their cars, instead relying on an overall sense of outrageous flamboyance and overall speed to attract buyers. Zampolli had utilized this same mindset with Cizeta, ultimately creating something far more extravagant and powerful than his former employer could offer to the public.
Adding further Lambo flair to the Cizeta was their utilization of Marcello Gandini, one of the greatest automotive designers of all time, who'd previously styled the Lamborghini Countach. His work is evident in the overall design of the Cizeta V16T, especially on the front end, which bears a strong resemblance to the Lamborghini Diablo. This is no accident, as Gandini had apparently hustled himself overseas to pen the design of both cars.
However, unlike the Diablo, or pretty much any car offered for sale during its run, the Cizeta offered something inherently distinctive; 16 cylinders of pure, unadulterated power. Its 6.0L V16 engine, mounted transversely, was the heart of the entire car and also the source of its name. That nameplate, originally dubbed the Cizeta-Moroder V16T, is a direct reference to Giorgio Moroder, the academy-award winning composer and "Father of Disco", who'd originally set up half of the financial backing to create the V16T.
In an interesting twist, none other than Sylvester Stallone was first offered the chance to finance the car, although the actor apparently backed down for unknown reasons. Moroder would also back down from this position, resulting in only one of the original Cizeta cars to bear his name.
(…)
In terms of outright performance, the Cizeta V16T is rated at a staggering 540bhp (533 hp), which was absolutely insane in 1991, the first year the car was marketed. In comparison, the competing Lamborghini Diablo offered 492 bhp (485 hp), which honestly wasn't much less.
Nonetheless, the Diablo topped out at 180mph, whereas the V16T managed to pierce the 200mph barrier, which was highly novel for the early 1990s. Over at Ferrari, their Testarossa only managed to shell out 385 bhp (380 hp) for 1991, putting it well below the performance chart in comparison. Truthfully, the Cizeta V16T can be compared to virtually all supercars produced over the last 31 years without scrutiny, as this model still remains available to this day (although it seems that few have actually decided to pony up the cash to order one).
(…)
At this very moment, if you've got the finances, you can head over to Cizeta's official website and place your order for a new V16T. The website itself looks a bit archaic, so it's unsure if anyone is still tending the light at the end of this tunnel, but the company was on record as late as 2018, saying they were still open for business. With an MSRP listed at $800,000, it would definitely be far more interesting than virtually any other new car for that price.”

As Tears Go By (Wong Kar-Wai, 1988)
Cast: Andy Lau, Maggie Cheung, Jacky Cheung, Alex Man, Ronald Wong, Ang Wong, Huang Pa-Ching. Screenplay: Jeffrey Lau, Wong Kar-Wai. Cinematography: Andrew Lau. Production design: William Chang. Film editing: Cheong Bei-Dak, Kai Kit-Wai. Music: Danny Chung, Teddy Robin Kwan.
It takes mastery of a genre to transcend that genre, as Martin Scorsese did with the gangster film and Douglas Sirk did with the romantic melodrama, and Wong Kar Wai does just that with his first feature, As Tears Go By. Scorsese looms larger here, in that his Mean Streets (1973) was an acknowledged influence on Wong's film, but I can't help seeing touches of Sirk in the portrayal of the romance between Wah (Andy Lau) and Ngor (Maggie Cheung). Yet Wong is very much his own man, and the film is a smashing (in all senses of the word) success full of fire and energy, yet able to show the ameliorating effect that Ngor has on the initially standoffish Wah, preoccupied with making his way in the underworld and defending his friend Fly (Jacky Cheung). The use on the soundtrack of Sandy Lam's version of Giorgio Moroder and Tom Whitlock's Oscar-winning “Take My Breath Away” evokes its source, Top Gun (Tony Scott, 1986), but it also accentuates the pop-culture-saturated milieu in which the action and the romance take place.

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(source) Read the full article

Beyoncé‘s seventh studio album, Renaissance, has topped this week’s new music poll.
Fans Choose Beyonce’s ‘Renaissance’ as This Week’s Favorite New Music
Music fans voted in a poll published Friday (July 29) on Billboard, choosing the superstar singer’s first solo studio release since 2016’s Lemonade as their favorite new music release of the past week.
Renaissance brought in nearly 57% of the vote, beating out new music by BLACKPINK (“Ready For Love” music video), Rosalía (“Despechá”), Hayley Kiyoko (Panorama), Maggie Rogers (Surrender), and $uicideboy$ (Sing Me a Lullaby, My Sweet Temptation).
Recorded over three years during the pandemic, Renaissance is “Act 1” of three. The 16-song project is crammed with features from Grace Jones, BEAM and Tems, along with production assists from husband Jay-Z, Drake, Skrillex, Giorgio Moroder, Nile Rodgers and others.
The house-infused “Break My Soul,” released in late June, was the first single from Renaissance. The song hit No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart dated July 7, 2022, marking Beyoncé’s milestone 20th top 10 as a soloist.
Renaissance follows 2016’s Lemonade, Queen Bey’s landmark album that debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, earning Beyoncé her sixth-chart topper. The set included guest appearances by Jack White, James Blake, The Weeknd and Kendrick Lamar.
Placing second on the past week’s tally with almost 15% of the vote was the music video for BLACKPINK’s newly released song “Ready For Love.” The K-pop quartet — Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé and Lisa — first unveiled the track in their recent in-game concert for PUGB Mobile, titled “THE VIRTUAL,” which featured the members performing a medley of their hits through virtual versions of their human forms.

Sometimes
you find something unique by accident. Back in the bad old days I found a disco album, which was disco-y in a bad way. Very thin-sounding production. BUT it was one of the first true mainstream synth albums and therefore a bit interesting as an object of the times. I made a mental note that it existed. A buddy of mine went for it in a big way and loved it. Things happened, pigs flew, we parted company and he became something technical somewhere else. I met this new friend, who was extremely eccentric in every way. He is still one of the strangest people I have known. Being a math teacher is the least odd thing about him. He listened to a soul-crushing mix of interesting things (Eintürzende Neubauten, Tuxedomoon, Carlheinz Stockhausen) who mostly had in common that they set your teeth on edge. One day we were low-key arguing about some nonsense while walking around his town, and we went into a record shop (those existed back in the day). We rifled through the inventory looking for strange kicks. And the disco album popped up again. Giorgio Moroders E=mc2. On vinyl.
Tumblr media
So I told my friend that this was one of the purest pre-eurodisco (1979) records I had ever heard, and he got this unsettling gleam in his eye. He asked the shop dude to play it. Shop dude did. And my friend looked like he had found the holy grail in a flea market (friends of Neil Gaiman will get this). Turns out he had been looking for this exact blippy sound for literal years. Nobody made music that sounded this cheap any more. The album was ludicrously priced (being vintage vinyl) but he immediately bought it (being well-off unlike me). And through digging up the uncoolest record of the decade I had become a hero, just for one day. Like the bard promised.
At the time this particular friend lived in student housing, and his poor neighbors had become semi-used to this hillbilly maniac who would play what sounded like industrial alarms around the clock, at harmful volume. His sudden switch to shitty disco did not make him any friends. It also made me public enemy number four.
You can rarely predict the future, but my feeling that his technical interest in disco was an evil omen turned out to be true. Years later he found the news source Fox news that “had a different spin on most news”, and that was my cue to say “I will be in touch” and delete his number from my phone. I fully expect him to be full-on Q by now. He might be Q for all I know.
I just tried to listen to this album again. It has not aged well. What little nostalgia I had for it was predictably all in my head. The whole thing can be found on youtube, but doing so should count as borderline self harm. I do not recommend it now.

Metropolis is a 1927 German expressionist science-fiction drama film directed by Fritz Lang. Written by Thea von Harbou in collaboration with Lang, it stars Gustav Frhlich, Alfred Abel, Rudolf Klein-Rogge,and Brigitte Helm. Erich Pommer produced it in the Babelsberg Studios for Universum Film A.G. (UFA). The silent film is regarded as a pioneering science-fiction movie, being among the first feature-length movies of that genre. Filming took place over 17 months in 1925–26 at a cost of more than five million Reichsmarks.
Made in Germany during the Weimar period, Metropolis is set in a futuristic urban dystopia and follows the attempts of Freder, the wealthy son of the city master, and Maria, a saintly figure to the workers, to overcome the vast gulf separating the classes in their city and bring the workers together with Joh Fredersen, the city master. The film's message is encompassed in the final inter-title: "The Mediator Between the Head and the Hands Must Be the Heart".
Metropolis met a mixed reception upon release. Critics found it visually beautiful and powerful – the film's art direction by Otto Hunte, Erich Kettelhut, and Karl Vollbrecht draws influence from Bauhaus, Cubist, and Futurist design, along with touches of the Gothic in the scenes in the catacombs, the cathedral and Rotwang's house – and lauded its complex special effects, but accused its story of being naive. H. G. Wells described the film as "silly", and The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction calls the story "trite" and its politics "ludicrously simplistic". The film's alleged Communist message was also criticized.
The film's extensive running time also came in for criticism, and Metropolis was cut substantially after its German premiere, with a large portion of Lang's original footage removed. Many attempts have been made since the 1970s to restore the film. In 1984, Italian music producer Giorgio Moroder released a truncated version with a soundtrack by rock artists including Freddie Mercury, Loverboy, and Adam Ant. In 2001, a new reconstruction of Metropolis was shown at the Berlin Film Festival. In 2008, a damaged print of Lang's original cut of the film was found in a museum in Argentina. After a long restoration process that required additional materials provided by a print from New Zealand, the film was 95% restored and shown on large screens in Berlin and Frankfurt simultaneously on 12 February 2010.
Metropolis is now widely regarded as one of the greatest and most influential films ever made, ranking 35th in Sight & Sound's 2012 critics' poll. In 2001 the film was inscribed on UNESCO's Memory of the World Register, the first film thus distinguished.
Metropolis was distributed by Parufamet, a company formed in December 1925 by the American film studios Paramount Pictures and Metro Goldwyn Mayer to loan $4 million (US) to UFA. The film had its world premiere at the UFA-Palast am Zoo in Berlin on 10 January 1927, where the audience, including a critic from the Berliner Morgenpost, reacted to several of the film's most spectacular scenes with "spontaneous applause". However, others have suggested the premiere was met with muted applause interspersed with boos and hisses.
At the time of its German premiere, Metropolis had a length of 4,189 metres, which is approximately 153 minutes at 24 frames per second (fps). UFA's distribution deal with Paramount and MGM "entitled [them] to make any change [to films produced by UFA] they found appropriate to ensure profitability". Considering that Metropolis was too long and unwieldy, Parufamet commissioned American playwright Channing Pollock to write a simpler version of the film that could be assembled using the existing material. Pollock shortened the film dramatically, altered its inter-titles and removed all references to the character of Hel, because the name sounded too similar to the English word Hell, thereby removing Rotwang's original motivation for creating his robot. Pollock said about the original film that it was "symbolism run such riot that people who saw it couldn't tell what the picture was about. ... I have given it my meaning." Lang's response to the re-editing of the film was to say "I love films, so I shall never go to America. Their experts have slashed my best film, Metropolis, so cruelly that I dare not see it while I am in England." The Hel storyline would be partially restored in Giorgio Moroder's 1984 version, and subsequent versions completely restored it.
In Pollock's cut, the film ran for 3,170 metres, or approximately 116 minutes—although a contemporary review in Variety of a showing in Los Angeles gave the running time as 107 minutes, and another source lists it at 105 minutes. This version of Metropolis premiered in the United States in March 1927, and was released, in a slightly different and longer version (128 minutes) in the United Kingdom around the same time with different title cards.
Alfred Hugenberg, a German nationalist businessman, cancelled UFA's debt to Paramount and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer after taking charge of the company in April 1927, and chose to halt distribution in German cinemas of Metropolis in its original form. Hugenberg had the film cut down to a length of 3,241 metres (about 118 minutes), broadly along the lines of Pollock's edit, removing the film's perceived "inappropriate" communist subtext and religious imagery. Hugenberg's cut of the film was released in German cinemas in August 1927. Later, after demands for more cuts by Nazi censors, UFA distributed a still shorter version of the film (2,530 metres, 91 minutes) in 1936, and an English version of this cut was archived in the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) film library in the 1930s. It was this version which was the basis of all versions of Metropolis until the recent restorations. In 1986 it was recopied and returned to Germany to be the basis of the 1987 Munich Archive restoration.

Cat People (Paul Schrader, 1982)
Cast: Nastassja Kinski, Malcolm McDowell, John Heard, Annette O’Toole, Ruby Dee, Ed Begley Jr., Scott Paulin, Frankie Faison, Ron Diamond, Lynn Lowry, John Larroquette. Screenplay: Alan Ormsby, based on a story by DeWitt Bodeen. Cinematography: John Bailey. Art direction: Edward Richardson. Film editing: Jacqueline Cambas, Jere Huggins, Ned Humphreys. Music: Giorgio Moroder.
Cat People is bloodier and kinkier than its source, the moody 1942 film of the same name, directed by Jacques Tourneur and produced by the maker of atmospheric horror films, Val Lewton. In the earlier movie, the ravages of the prowling cat persons were off-screen, suggested but not shown. In Paul Schrader's remake, they're played to shock, not just to creep you out. The subtext, a fear of sex, remains the same, although the earlier film is more about a fear of female sexuality, while the Schrader version adds incest to the mix. It's all very stylishly done, with Nastassja Kinski excellent as the woman haunted by a past she is unaware of, and Malcolm McDowell as her unstable brother. John Heard is rather eccentrically cast as the male lead, a New Orleans zookeeper, though he's an improvement over the dull Kent Smith in the original film. The wonderful Ruby Dee has a smallish but important role as Female -- pronounced Fe-MAH-ly.
