here is a concept: time travel cop, fish & wildlife division
most of their job is dealing with the kinds of assholes who think black market tiger cubs are a great idea right up until someone gets mauled, except these are even bigger assholes with black market Smilodon cubs that they are even less equipped to care for
this is the most straightforward and therefore relatively headache-free part of their job, because it’s the same “put that thing back where it came from or so help me” song and dance every time
it’s also significantly less depressing than the trophy hunters who don’t even want an alive extinct animal. those are extra annoying because you have to undo the time travel that let them kill that poor Megatherium or thylacine or anklyosaur or whatever, and it’s always so much extra paperwork.
and those people suck, definitely, and have fully earned a stint in Time Jail. no question. but they still do not create anywhere near as much work as the obsessive hobbyists with their exhaustively careful best practices and worryingly good track-covering. also, weirdly, it’s almost always birds with them?
like. the guys who will flagrantly abuse Time Law to bird-nap breeding pairs just long enough to raise one clutch of eggs apiece, and return them seamlessly to their spots on the timeline. who are so determined to keep their pet (ha) projects going that no one even realizes what they’re doing until they have an entire stable breeding population of passenger pigeons up and running. who are now the reason that reps from six different zoos are about to start throwing hands right in front of you over who gets dibs.
those guys cause the most paperwork. and half the time they’re snapped up by the same zoo or wildlife preserve that gets their colony of ivory-billed woodpeckers or Carolina parakeets or — once, very memorably — giant fucking South Island moa, and they never even spend a day in Time Jail.

Tie a string around your finger, so you won't forget...
The Carolina Parakeet was declared extinct in 1939.
Up until just the year before, people were still claiming to have sighted the yellow-headed parakeets in the wild—in the impenetrable depths of Georgia's Okefenokee Swamp; along the Santee River basin of South Carolina, where people still search for the Ivory-Billed Woodpecker to this day—but evidence suggested only escaped, feral species of pet birds, tinged by wishful thinking.
The last definitively identified specimen of Conuropsis carolinensis, a male named Incas, had died at the Cincinnati Zoo in 1918. As it happens, his last home was the very same cage in which Martha, the endling Passenger Pigeon, had spent her final years. 2014, the hundredth anniversary of Martha's loss, brought the publication of a number of new books on the topic of the Passenger Pigeon and even a documentary; the centenary of Incas' death, by contrast, warranted only a handful of mentions of our lost native parrot.
Hardly a hundred years later, our parakeet has faded from common memory—like the fading text on the tags that twine around the feet of the study skins that fill museum specimen drawers, where they should have filled the sky, should have filled roosts in hollow trees, should have filled our backyards; should have filled their lungs with air, and our hearts and imaginations and eyes with the sight of their iridescent green feathers.
The title of this painting is Memory Knot. It is gouache on 18 x 13 inch paper, and is the 9th piece in my series on the extinct Carolina Parakeet. It is also the final piece in the series as originally conceived (though inspiration continues to strike, and this is not the last appearance the species will make in my art).
Please, remember that there was a bird called the Carolina Parakeet. Remember what happened to it. Remember that we are the only ones who can keep it from happening again.

The Best News of Last Week - May 15, 2023
🧲 - Magnetic Marvels: Researchers Flip the Switch on Depression
1. New Zealand Government announces prescriptions charges will be free.
Tumblr media
The $5 prescription fee at pharmacies will be scrapped in July. This is set to save about 3 million people a year money, and in particular 770,000 people aged over 65. It will make most prescriptions in New Zealand free.
Free access to medicines is also hoped to ease pressure on the over-burdened health system by helping people get medicines sooner.
2. Platypuses return to Sydney's Royal National Park after disappearing for decades
Tumblr media
Platypuses have been relocated to the Royal National Park in Sydney, after they disappeared from the park's waterways about 50 years ago. A joint project by the University of New South Wales, NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service and the World Wildlife Fund has reintroduced five females to the Hacking River, with a group of males to follow next week.
3. 74-year-old musician Otis Taylor gets Denver high school diploma decades after being expelled for hair
Tumblr media
A musician who was expelled from a Denver high school over 50 years ago received his diploma. Otis Taylor was kicked out of Manual High School in 1966 because of his hair. This was decades before laws ending racial hair discrimination. Denver Public Schools wanted to right a wrong.
4. Researchers treat depression by reversing brain signals traveling the wrong way (with magnets)
Tumblr media
A new study led by Stanford Medicine researchers is the first to reveal how magnetic stimulation treats severe depression: by correcting the abnormal flow of brain signals. Powerful magnetic pulses applied to the scalp to stimulate the brain can bring fast relief to many severely depressed patients for whom standard treatments have failed.
The FDA-cleared treatment, known as Stanford neuromodulation therapy, incorporates advanced imaging technologies to guide stimulation with high-dose patterns of magnetic pulses that can modify brain activity related to major depression. Compared with traditional TMS, which requires daily sessions over several weeks or months, SNT works on an accelerated timeline of 10 sessions each day for just five days.
5. Electricity generation through solar, wind and water exceeded total demand in mainland Spain on Tuesday, a pattern that will be repeated more and more in the future
Tumblr media
The Spanish power grid on Tuesday tasted an appetizer of the renewable energy banquet that is expected to flourish in the coming years. For nine hours, between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m., the generation of green electricity was more than enough to cover 100% of Spanish peninsular demand, a milestone that had already been reached on previous occasions, but not for such a prolonged period.
6. RI Senate passes bill making lunch free at all public schools
Tumblr media
Free lunch for all public school students in Rhode Island is one step closer to becoming a reality.
Tuesday night the Rhode Island Senate overwhelmingly passed a bill by a vote of 31-4 that would do just that. If the companion bill in the House were to pass, that takes effect July 1. The bill would make breakfast and lunch free for all public school students in the state, regardless of their household income.
7. Critically endangered red wolf pups born at North Carolina Zoo
The North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro celebrated the arrival of “not one but TWO litters” of the world’s most endangered wolf – the red wolf – in late April and early May.
A total of nine pups were born – three to parents Marsh and Roan, and six to Denali and May – the zoo announced on May 9.

(via ‘Tiger King’ star 'Doc' Antle convicted of wildlife trafficking in Virginia | AP News)
WINCHESTER, Va. (AP) — A wild animal trainer featured in the popular Netflix series “Tiger King” has been convicted of wildlife trafficking in Virginia, the attorney general’s office announced Tuesday.
Bhagavan “Doc” Antle was accused of illegally buying endangered lion cubs in Frederick County, Virginia, for display and profit at his South Carolina zoo, Attorney General Jason Miyares said in a news release. A jury convicted Antle on Friday of two felony counts each of wildlife trafficking and conspiring to wildlife traffic.

Video
The Gorilla Slide
A silverback gorilla scared the daylights out of a South Carolina zoo-goer after smoothly sliding into frame like a boss.
The video starts off by showing gorillas milling about in an enclosure at the Riverbanks Zoo in Columbia.
Then, it’s on like Donkey Kong: a giant silverback bursts into the enclosure from the back room and slides right up to the glass so it’s face-to-face with the observers, who can be heard laughing nervously.
The “396-pound beast,” allegedly named Cenzoo, then wheels around so its behemoth hairy booty is oriented toward the camera, before sauntering into the gorilla door from whence it came.
Needless to say, viewers agreed that 26-year-old Cenzoo definitely knew how to make an entrance.

TENTATIVE TIMELINE FOR CRANE.
Note: I realize that at times I have elaborated on aspects of Crane's past, like he had a very unusual and quick education or that he arrived in Gotham young, but I don't think I've ever really gone into detail, so let me do my best now to give general timeframes for Crane's most formative years and events. TW for violence, abuse, drug use, and generally disturbing content.
OCTOBER 30TH, 1992: Jonathan Ichabod Crane is born in Rockville, South Carolina, to Doctor Gerald Crane and Doctor Karen Keeny, two Professors of Bioengineering and Chemistry, respectively, at USC. Doctor Keeny's family also owns the farm where Jonathan is born and raised.
Tumblr media
JUNE, 1993: Jonathan says his first word, 'corn', and begins to crawl. The fact that he has already started to walk and talk so soon (certainly much sooner than is expected) is amazing, but the new parents don't have time to dwell.
SEPTEMBER 8TH, 1993: Doctor Gerald Crane is contacted by an arm of the U.S. Government interested in his papers and his theoretical and practical work in bioengineering. Doctor Crane takes on more hours at the University to work more closely with his new contacts, and Doctor Karen Keeny begins to struggle with raising Crane alone.
SEPTEMBER 16TH, 1993: After receiving letters from their son, Grandparents Josef and Yumi Crane arrive from Brooklyn to help care for Jonathan, alongside Ebrahim and Edda Keeny.
OCTOBER 30TH, 1993: Jonathan's first birthday passes, and he is surrounded by family.
JANUARY 19TH, 1996: Josef passes from kidney failure. Jonathan experiences loss for the first time in his life.
Tumblr media
FEBRUARY 9TH, 1997: A tragic car accident claims the lives of Yumi and Ebrahim, and severely injures Edda. Lasting trauma, both physical and mental, causes Edda to grow bitter and lash out, with her most frequent target being 4 year old Jonathan. Jonathan seeks escape in the form of fantasies.
AUGUST 1ST, 1997: Jonathan is enrolled into Kindergarten a year early, and takes to the material with ease. His intellect is unusual and more than impressive enough for him to take advanced classes. Jonathan's physical growth is also admirable and he starts to work around the farm despite his young age.
SEPTEMBER 9TH, 1997: USC is forced to slash budgets, and both Gerald and Karen are let go, with Gerald being pushed deeper into the government sector, with his only work being found with his continued cooperation with his mysterious contacts.
OCTOBER 30TH, 1997: Jonathan spends his fifth birthday with his parents in Gotham, New Jersey. His parents are there for business connections, and to mingle with polite society. Jonathan develops a fond impression of the now deceased Waynes, who his parents evidently knew at one point. Jonathan gets lost in the Gotham City Zoo's bat exhibit, and attacked by bats. Jonathan develops his first phobia.
FEBRUARY 1ST, 1999: Edda passes away in her sleep.
FEBRUARY 2ND, 1999: Karen, pregnant with a second child and trying to cope with the loss of her mother, flees the farm while Gerald is away, and leaves Jonathan behind. Jonathan is left alone on the farm for 2 days until his father finally returns home from 'work'.
FEBRUARY 5TH 1999: Gerald Crane snaps, and injects both himself and his son with FT-001, the chemical compound he had been developing for years, designed to neutralize fear responses by sending a massive shock to the system until the subject is desensitized. His work was not finished.
Tumblr media
FEBRUARY 6TH, 1999: After hours of painful convulsions, palpitations, and unnaturally induced seizures, Gerald and Jonathan regain autonomy, although Jonathan's left eye and parts of his brain are damaged after hitting his head accidentally. Fear Trials begin.
APRIL 7TH, 1999: A truancy officer from Jonathan's school shows up to investigate his absence. Gerald murders him. Jonathan has witnessed his first murder.
AUGUST 10TH, 1999: After six months, Gerald's "Fear Trials" are brought to an end when Jonathan lashes out and murders Gerald with a kitchen knife. Jonathan has taken his first life. Jonathan locks himself in the basement as punishment.
Tumblr media
AUGUST 13TH, 1999: Quorum Agents "Pace" and "Sixer", dispatched months ago to investigate Gerald's absence and theft of government property, find Gerald Crane's corpse in his farmhome in Rockville, SC, and his malnourished and severely injured six year old in the basement. Jonathan Crane is recovered as an asset by Quorum.
AUGUST 15TH, 1999: Jonathan Crane arrives at an unnamed Quorum Facility near Atlanta, Georgia, and is given intensive medical care. The Fear Toxin cannot be purged from his veins (or Quorum is unwilling to do so), and so hormone regulators are implanted in his spine and cerebellum to analyze the compound and keep hormones and enzymes consistent throughout Jonathan's body. As a side effect, Jonathan becomes near-completely dependent on Fear Toxin, both physiologically and psychologically. Further testing causes one of Jonathan's lungs to collapse, and emergency surgery is performed.
OCTOBER 30TH, 1999: Jonathan celebrates his seventh birthday in the middle of combat training.
FEBRUARY 12TH, 2000: Jonathan Crane's hallucinations grow exponentially more frequent and dangerous in response to his trauma. Attempts to slow his mental deterioration are made, but are ineffective. Jonathan begins to exclusively refer to himself as Crane, and will not respond to his first name or variations thereof.
Tumblr media
APRIL 1ST, 2000: Crane has been informed of 'April Fool's Day' by Quorum Agent "Lucky". Crane terrifies Researcher O'Hanrahan and induces cardiac arrest, leading to death. Agent "Lucky" is terminated and security around Crane is tightened. When questioned as to his reasons, Crane shrugs. "The Scarecrow said it would be fun prank. He was right."
SEPTEMBER 1ST, 2001: After over two years, Crane escapes the Quorum facility in a whirlwind of carnage and bloodshed.
OCTOBER 13TH, 2003: At the age of 11, after two years of hiding and being on the run, Crane arrives in Gotham City, New Jersey. Drifting from homeless shelter to homeless shelter, Crane is certain he has finally lost Quorum.
OCTOBER 30TH, 2003: After a thorough investigation reveals that Crane's mother left him and his father, and his father was killed in a home invasion, Crane is put into the foster care system. Quorum covered their tracks well, and the blood on Crane's hands remains invisible for the moment.
OCTOBER 30TH, 2005: On his 13th birthday Crane is adopted by one Salvatore di Vaio, a local businessman known for his generous contributions to both the Mayor's Office, and GCPD fundraisers.
OCTOBER 31ST, 2005: Crane is presented to the di Vaio Crime Family, under the leadership of Don Salvatore. Crane arrives at an abandoned farmstead with a lab built underground, where he begins working as a criminal. He despises the lab, but he's not being smacked around or forced to fight, and is instead treated with respect, makes connections, and acquires a vast amount of knowledge, so he considers it an improvement.
OCTOBER 9TH, 2007: After almost two years with the di Vaios, a crucial misstep eradicates 90% of the family. Salvatore is furious and scared as The Roman and The Boss close in, with both the Falcones and the Maronis eager to finally put an end to the drug trafficking rings that the di Vaios are famous for. Crane sees opportunity and seizes it, slaughtering Salvatore di Vaio in cold blood and nailing his corpse up in a warehouse by Gotham's docks, before returning to Salvatore's household.
OCTOBER 10TH, 2007: When the dust clears, Crane is the sole surviving relative of Salvatore di Vaio, and the only one mentioned in the man's will still around. He inherits a prodigious amount of money, most of which he uses to purchase the abandoned farmhouse, which he renames "Elysium Acres."
AUGUST 1ST, 2008: At 15 years old, and after only one year, Jonathan Crane graduates from high school with honors. Universities across the country are clambering to get him, but he chooses Gotham University.
FEBRUARY 1ST, 2009: Crane begins his education at Gotham University. While working on his farmhouse one day, a mysterious Raven comes to him, injured. He names it Poe and helps it recover. Poe decides to stick around.
Tumblr media
AUGUST 9TH, 2013: Crane has acquired his final PhD, now possessing a Doctorate of Education in addition to a Doctorate of Psychology, a Doctorate of Chemistry, and a Doctorate of Counseling.
JUNE 6TH, 2014: At 21 years of age, Crane becomes a Professor of Psychology at Gotham University, and opens a practice in Gotham. For the first time since he was six, he is happy. Jonathan considers his life.
JUNE 8TH, 2017: Crane's coworkers surprise him during the beginning of a new semester with an idea: a Halloween Party at the end of the term. The beginning of the end is near.
OCTOBER 31ST, 2017: Crane, age 25, attends a University Halloween Party dressed as the Headless Horseman, as planned. He mounts a clockwork horse, as planned. Then the room is filled with a high pitch shrieking, and moments later, a swarm of bats is released into the auditorium. This was not planned. The screams of pained students and faculty members alike triggers a traumatic episode, and Crane ends up killing Professor Minerva Stanis and Doctor Anastasia Asher with a firearm, before jumping from the auditorium's third story window, still riding the clockwork horse.
Tumblr media
APRIL 1ST, 2018: The Scarecrow emerges in his first large-scale attack on Gotham. Several innocent men and women are killed and dozens more are traumatized. Though managing to evade capture by GCPD, The Scarecrow is eventually apprehended and processed by Batman, and is revealed to be none other than Professor Jonathan Ichabod Crane, presumed dead, now confirmed alive.
OCTOBER 31ST, 2018: Crane escapes Arkham Asylum and incites a massive riot, freeing many of his fellow criminals. Crane returns home to his farmhouse.
DECEMBER 31ST, 2018: Crane adopts a young Sheltie he found by the side of the road and names her Rosa. Crane develops an experimental treatment for his pet Raven, Poe, to prolong his life. It works.
Tumblr media
JANUARY 1ST, 2019 - DECEMBER 2021: Crane continues to remain a dangerous, high profile criminal, though the Batman can usually be relied upon to put an end to Crane's schemes.
DECEMBER 22ND, 2021: Crane receives a visitor in Arkham. Her name is Carrie Crane, daughter of Gerald Crane and Karen Keeny. She is Jonathan's younger sister, working at S.T.A.R Labs. She wants to see him again.
JANUARY 1ST, 2022 - PRESENT: Crane is trying to get better. He still struggles - oh, does he struggle. But he wishes to be better. He had no reason before. He does now.

Mormon Country
Today is my last day in Salt Lake City, Utah, and I don’t want to leave. The city is beautiful with its lovely mountain landscape and bright colored tulips springing from the ground. I came at a good time because the weather feels like Spring. In one direction, I see snow covering the mountain tops. In the other direction, I see hues of browns, tans, & greens in the distance. My view from my hotel room made my stay even more pleasant. This was my first time staying at a 4/5 star hotel. I’m glad to have this experience alone because I really got to enjoy the space. Sleeping in a different bed in a new place hits differently. I’m glad I took the opportunity to come out here.
The main reason I came to SLC is to attend my first Anti-Human Trafficking Conference. Since I registered for this conference I kept my mind open because I didn’t know what to expect. For a 2 day conference, the organizers (Freedom Network USA), packed in lots of workshops. When it came to selecting my workshops, I chose ones that the subject matters were little known to me and unfamiliar to the scope of work I do with Adelante. I spoke to a view people, but I mainly moved around on my own (not too much of a big deal). It seemed like the underlying theme was centered around or related to labor trafficking which was refreshing because I think the movement is hyper focused on sex trafficking and other forms of sexual exploitation. First, I regretted signing up for the Young Professionals workshop, but now, I’m glad I didn’t change my mind. I got some helpful information and good insight to how others in my field have encountered similar challenges in the work environment as me, and everyone in the room were in their 20s. However, I feel even more confused thinking about next steps related to my career. Adelante has become a job and not much as a career for me. I’m still passionate working in the anti-trafficking movement, though I wonder if I want to change landscape like doing the same work outside of the health/medical field.
Though the days were long, I was able to explore the city at the end of the day. I visited all things Mormon like the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints temple and tabernacle; LSD Conference Center, the Temple’s botanical garden, and the LSD museum (more like walked passed it). I received a few compliments on my prayer sweatshirt. SLC is seen as this overly conservative religious place. Yet, I ended up at a bar called WHY KIKI and attended my first (drag) burlesque show. I enjoyed myself! It was like a mash up between the movie Burlesque and RePaul’s Drag Show. A round of applause for the women & men who performed that night I know I couldn’t go on stage display my body like that. Like the hosts said, “Every body is a Beautiful body”. I walked around some more & walked through the City Creek mall, and spent the rest of my last day exploring Utah’s Hogel Zoo. I was considering visiting the Great Salt Lake, but honestly, I didn’t want to go by myself (maybe next time…).
I have to flight out in the morning. I’m treading it because I have nothing to come home to. I’m going back to a city I’m not too fond of. I’m going back to an apartment where my bedroom is the only piece of me. I’m going back to a job that I have a complicated relationship with. I guess the good news is that after two weeks of being back, I’ll be off again. This time heading South to South Carolina. I can cross off visiting the West Coast. Next time I’ll be on this side again is to visit Adelena and/or Miranda if they are still stationed in California.
Pictures & Videos soon to come…
