“Augustus,” Willow greets, sliding in next to him on the couch. It’s a rare moment when they’re alone in the Noceda household. No Hunter keeping a watchful eye on his self-appointed charge. No Amity leaning on her, a familiar tether in an otherwise strange world. “Mind if I sit?”

Busted already. What gave her away? Too casual in her approach? Or too careful? The pitfalls of having a friend who knows you better than you know yourself. 

Two can play at that game, though. “Why don’t you tell me?”

Willow doesn’t have much to do these days besides worry. Worry for her dads, who she misses like a whole half of her heart. Worry for everyone they left behind in the Boiling Isles.

Worry for Gus, who — while he has improved since that initial night of heartache and terror — can’t quite shake this shroud of despair that he wears when he believes nobody’s watching. 

Of course Willow notices. Not much else for her to do while they’re trapped in the human realm.

Predictably, Gus scoffs at her question. “It would be faster to list what’s not wrong with our lives right now.”

Willow can’t force herself to disagree. Her positive attitude is a far cry from Luz’s tireless optimism, but it’s served her well as a coping mechanism, even on some of the worst days of her life. Only it’s difficult to imagine a situation worse than this.

Even the loss of the smallest things — her plants, her bed, her cozy socks — sting like a thousand papercuts. The more she touches the memories, the more she aches.

“You’re right,” she admits. “And it freaking sucks, because we can’t do anything right now.”

Gus remains silent, staring straight ahead at the television. Usually, he watches cartoons with Hunter or Luz, but this time it’s a news reporter on screen. She wonders if it reminds him of his dad. Another memory, another cut.

“But,” Willow points out, nudging her shoulder with his. “As someone who felt helpless for a long time, I’m not really a fan. So I figure, why not try focusing on what we can do for each other?” 

It isn’t dissimilar from what she told King, what feels like an eternity ago. And oh, Titan, does that make her chest quaver. To think that he might’ve taken her words to heart, taken them to mean he should help by staying behind while they fled—

“Thanks, Willow,” Gus whispers, derailing her one-way guilt trip. “But you don’t need to worry about me.”

It does the trick. Gus snorts out a laugh, some of the tension in his shoulders loosening.

Emboldened by the small victory, Willow presses on. “Okay, we’ve established that apparently I have no reason to worry. Are you ... worried about anything?”

Lips pursed in a tight line, Gus shrugs. Completely noncommittal. Willow would call it childish, but it’s nice, actually, to see him finally act his age. Still, it means she’ll have to prod further to get him to speak.

“Does it have anything to do with why you’re avoiding Hunter?”

“What?” Gus snaps. “I’m not avoiding him! Kind of impossible to do, when we literally share a room.”

“You’re avoiding something with Hunter,” she revises. True, they’re as joined at the hip as ever. When Hunter isn’t paying attention, though, that’s when Gus stares at the older boy, all wide-eyed and wounded. 

Originally, Willow chalked it up to the fear of losing someone else, the way his gaze tracked Hunter’s every move. As the bags under Gus’s eyes grow darker, she can no longer let it slide.

“I’ve noticed you stealing glances at him—”

“I do?” Gus interrupts. It dawns on her that he may not have even been aware. “I’m looking at him weird? How??”

Taken aback, Willow stammers out, “Well, you.... you look at him like... Like you’ve seen a ghost.”

Gus pales, taking on the shade of a ghost himself. His voice is a frantic whisper. “Has he noticed?”

“I don’t think so,” Willow replies, slowly. Carefully, like she’s navigating a field of thorns. “Gus, is... Is there something you haven’t told us?”

Opening his mouth, Gus hesitates. The words catch in his throat, so he swallows them back again. “You don’t need to worry about me,” he insists.

Even though he can’t articulate it aloud, Willow hears what’s unspoken. Her minds flashes to Hunter, who was still in...  Survival mode, for lack of a better term. Where she felt herself faltering from time-to-time, Hunter remained steady.  Always ready to do a chore for Mrs. Noceda, or comfort Gus, or give Luz tips on rebuilding the portal. Never stopping long enough to process what’s happened, focused only on his future goals.

It’s a defense mechanism, to be sure. And it’s just as sure to backfire on him, eventually. Nonetheless, Willow can’t deny that part of her is envious. At least Hunter’s way of coping allows him to move forward, and be useful, instead of stagnating or feeling sorry for himself.

“I didn’t realize that…” Gus sighs, the words coming unstuck. “When you use the mirror to show someone their worst memories, it... It shows you their worst memories, too.”

Her eyes widen, the seed of dread in her stomach blooming into full-blown horror.

“Oh, Gus,” she gasps, her hand flying to cover her mouth.

“Yeah,” he huffs, that not-quite laugh brimming with self-deprecation. “That’ll teach me to pocket magical artifacts from creeps like Gray.”

“Are you okay?” Willow asks. Her gaze sweeps over her friend, as if she can pinpoint the place he’s hurt, as if it isn't already embedded inside, somewhere she can't hope to reach. “Seriously, I can’t imagine what would scare a monster like Belos—”

“He had a brother.”

And that, that of all things, is not what Willow expects to hear. Belos was always this larger-than-life concept looming over the Isles, more of a myth than a man. To know that he was once just a human is one thing. To know that he was a human with a life, family? Even a—

“A brother who he killed.”  

Her chest constricts, her pulse fluttering in shock. Her hand reaches out for Gus’s arm, as much for his comfort as her own.

Now that the dam's burst, the words won't cease. Gus clutches at the chain around his neck, his eyes clouded, distant.

“A brother who looks exactly like Hunter.” He chokes it out like a confession, like some dark, terrible thing he’s been holding back, but it’s finally broken free to the surface. Tears spring to his eyes, but he doesn’t stop, not even to take a breath.

"Willow, I saw— I saw it, this hand, it was clawing its way out of the dirt, and Belos, he was so— He was devastated, and alone, but he was so, so angry at Caleb, too—"

Centipede—Septober Energy (Esoteric)

In June of 1971, the impossible happened, or maybe it’s just impossible now. An aggregate residing under the rather misleading, or at least incomplete, moniker “big band” converged on Wessex Sound Studios in London and recorded, under the direction of Keith Tippett and for a major label, the diverse and ultimately indescribable music comprising Septober Energy. It was to be the only album by Centipede, performing Tippett’s variously organized compositions, and it has now been reissued from the original tapes in a package that should prove as definitive as the disparately fragmenting and congealing sound-energies swirling from the speakers.

Listing the musicians would be a fruitless task; just check out the album’s Wikipedia entry for full details. Suffice it to say here that core membership from King Crimson, Soft Machine and Nucleus forms the heart of the venture, which was also produced by Robert Fripp. While he doesn’t play, Brian Godding, guitarist from Blossom Toes (whose albums have also enjoyed recent deluxe Esoteric reissues) provides still underappreciated distorted riffage, especially on the second piece. Even to cite those three groups as the orchestra’s power nexus is far from complete, as the personnel list comprises many of the finest improvisers on the English scene at the time, including Paul Rutherford, Maggie Nicols, Mongezi Feza, Dudu Pukwana, Harry Miller and so many others. Their ensemble and individual contributions fuse all manner of transcultural classical, jazz and prog influence to form the four-part epic, each piece one side of the double album.

Yes, there was a previous CD version taken from the master tapes, but there’s something richer about the sonorities here, something full, dark and sparkling by turn, presenting all instrumental and vocal details with new depth and amazing perspective. What now emerges with the most stunning clarity are the dynamic extremes. Godding’s raunchy lines blast their way onto the soundstage as wasn’t even the case with the first vinyl issue, but the album’s opening moments ring forth with crystal percussive clarity. Ditto the third part’s inaugural minutes, the vocals floating over the silence in something conjoining icy serenity and anticipation, and then those sinewy and delicious percussion dialogues, courtesy of Robert Wyatt and John Marshall, thrum, rush and roar only to fade, making room for a fusion of military and circus as exciting as it is confounding, as if Charles Ives had contributed passages to King Crimson’s Lizard. Best of all is the droning sections bookending the first piece, somehow raw and delicate, a foundation of tone transformation supporting constantly changing color and ensemble size, the initial six-minute arc anticipating the kaleidoscopic freakout and ritualistic repetitions to follow. Equally poignant are Keith Tippett’s effortless piano arpeggiations and the meditative unisons of Nicols and Julie Tippetts voices as they buoy shimmering string harmonics later in the track.

The album is a minor miracle of constantly morphing acoustic space, and this must be a consequence of Fripp’s production, which can now be appreciated afresh. Even beyond that, it cries freedom, a communal salute to a point in time when the enthusiasm underpinning such multileveled cross-reference and the projects housing it was real and immediate, perhaps less defined but inimitably palpable. If excess occasionally looms large, it is always tempered by a chamber-music veracity as the never-murky waves and rivulets ebb, flow and trickle in majestic succession. Syd Smith’s superb liner notes set the stage and spin the narrative yarn in his typically engaging and inclusive fashion. Taken as a whole, the package speaks to a time and a musical environment in which anything seemed not only to be possible but in reach, nearly tangible, the proximate dawn of another day that cycles through Julie Tippetts’ lyrics manifest. The organization gave several concerts; were any of them preserved? Either way, with the exception of Carla Bley’s monumental Escalator Over the Hill, it is difficult to think of another album encapsulating so completely the diversity in unity occurring when so many talented musicians gather in creative celebration. The fact that it is now reissued with the care it deserves is heart-warming.

2. Mr Scruff - Trouser Jazz Deluxe 20th Anniversary Edition (2023) AND Ninja Tuna Deluxe Triple LP out today! (29/03/24)

Part II of our ‘Ninja Tales’ series for our ‘Uncovered’ blog explores the creative for two re-releases from Manchester’s own Andy Carthy aka Mr Scruff on Ninja Tune. We speak to Ninja Tune's Head of Production, Sean Preston to get the full story.

Former fine art student at Sheffield University, DJ and Cartoonist, Andy Carthy’s iconic line art cartoon drawings have illustrated gig flyers, record sleeves and merchandise and usually accompany him at gigs as live animated visuals. Mr Scruff's cartoons feature across his body of work are a big part of his identity, instantly recognisable to electronic music fans.

Trouser Jazz, originally released in 2002, celebrated its 20th anniversary with a Deluxe anniversary edition on a double LP with blue/red vinyl to match the cover palette of the original iconic artwork by Mr. Scruff & Airside with an “infinity” peelable trouser sticker on the cover to reveal silver and gold foiled 20th anniversary trousers. 

Ninja Tuna, the fourth studio album by Mr Scruff, originally released on CD in 2008 through Carthy's personal Ninja Tune, is the latest Mr Scruff album to get a fancy makeover and is released on 29th March 2024. Now available for the first time on vinyl, the record is presented as a deluxe triple LP housed in a gatefold greyboard sleeve, complete with bonus tracks, pressed on Biovinyl and also with an “infinity” peelable tuna sticker on the cover.

We spoke to Ninja Tune’s Head of Production, Sean Preston to get the story behind the creative.

Sean explains, “These two records first came out decades ago when budget and RRP limited what we could do. Ninja Tuna didn’t even get a vinyl release. The two new versions utilise the same "gecko sticker” design to take a product concept and roll it out across the act's work. When ‘Trouser Jazz’ came up for an anniversary edition, it felt like a really good opportunity to delve into the original artwork, honour it, and bring it to life. It’s a fun, interactive and borderline silly design package, that is apposite to Scruff’s playful and tongue-in-cheek cartoons.”

He continues, “I had become aware of a “gecko” sticker thanks to music product maestros SixtySix Productions, specifically Emily Robbins there. The sticker is in fact more like velcro than a normal sticker adhesive, which is why it’s often called "infinity peel”. In fact, like velcro you prob get a few thousand re-peels of it, so whilst “infinity” is a stretch, it’ll take some debunking in practice.”

Sean continues, “We took the trousers which make up the original front cover’s central feature, and created new 20 year anniversary trousers, foiled in gold with a beautiful silver belt. Then, traditional marketing sensibility troll that I am, I placed the standard blue trousers over the top as a sticker. The trick here is not only covering up the expensive bit to leave as a surprise for buyers, but to create a small deboss into the sleeve where the foil trousers are, and present the record as it originally was, with the old school blue trousers sitting in place, flush against its surroundings. Of course, at home, once those trousers are peeled off, the owner of the record can put them wherever they want. My Trouser Jazz trousers currently sit on my copy of Bob Dylan’s Street Legal.”

With today’s release of Ninja Tuna on vinyl for the first time the new package design was in keeping with Trouser Jazz's concepts.

Sean told us, “Part of the decision to present Trouser Jazz with this peel and reveal gatefold sleeve was made with an eye on future Scruff reissues. This week we release Nina Tuna on vinyl for the first time, and as a 3LP no less! Its cover features a centrally located tuna fish. No free copies to anyone guessing what we’ve done with it! Andy (Mr Scruff) was very up for reinterpreting the original CD artwork, and got to work on new illustrations to exist alongside original illustrations."

"The main tuna dude on the front gets a beautiful new coat (scale even?!) of silver. It really shimmers in the sun. It’s so fun working with artists like Scruff, he’s totally open to ideas and has such vital advice and feedback. I think initially I was steering towards a greyboard to replicate the original CDs, but availability of that type of board wasn’t what it was 15 years ago, and it tends to be difficult to work with when you want to use heavier versions of it that are necessary for a heavy duty gatefold sleeve.”

Sean continues, “It’s a small thing, but I’m dangerously self-satisfied with the inner sleeves. They spell out NINJA TUNA between them, and reveal vinyl discs pressed onto BioVinyl, which is a relatively new thing in the world of vinyl offered by Optimal Media in Germany. There are a few specifics about Biovinyl that make it a better choice for the environment, but the key is using biogenic waste like cooking oil rather than petroleum. It’s something we are trying to encourage more use of, with one eye on truly eco-friendly, carbon neutral vinyl alternatives that are in development.”

Sean Preston is an award winning product designer and artist from London. He is Head of Production at independent record label Ninja Tune, a bastion of ground-breaking music since 1990, working with artists such as Black Country, New Road, Bonobo, Thundercat, Mr Scruff and more. Sean founded Fiction magazine and publisher Open Pen.

We already loved both these records, but Ninja Tuna getting a first release on vinyl is particularly pleasing for us of course. We shall be peeling and un-peeling our copies with glee! We were also extremely chuffed to have got some words from Andy Carthy (Mr Scruff) himself about this project, “I really enjoyed collaborating on the design with Ninja Tune’s Sean Preston. Both albums needed a lot of re-drawing & re-writing hand-written text, so I did the bit that I am good at (potato drawings & writing) & Sean did the professional design bit, which I struggle with beyond basic illustrator fiddling. The daft hype stickers were fun to do as well!”

With Mr Scruff's back catalogue getting this delightful vinyl upgrade, we're hopeful that there’s another one on the way to complete the set.... !!

“So, are you going to tell me about the spa thing? I did say I wanted to hear about your day.” Shit. I almost forgot about that. How was I going to explain everything without telling him everything? How much would I be able to tell? “Nerd.” I quickly looked back at Kacchan. “You were crying. I need to know why.”

“Why do you need to know that?” I watched as his left eye did the twitching thing. But I was taken back how he was also taking in deep breaths. What was happening? Was this even real?

“Because you almost did something. And I need to know…” Does this mean that Kacchan cares about me? Or was I being delusional again? There was no way this was real. “Nerd!” Damn it! He wasn’t worried about me after all. He’s just mad at me. He’s just angry with me. It’s probably because I took so long to answer him. There’s no way that he’s worried about me. Not only was I broken and delusional, but I must also be flat out crazy. That just had to be it. “Nerd, I’m not mad at you!”

It’s then that I saw that I had dropped my phone. Instead of picking it up, I just flipped it over. “Kacchan.” It was hard to speak as I looked at his angry face. “Please. Do I really have to say it?”

As I ran the cold water, I looked for that tub table I saw earlier. Once I found it and adjusted it over the tub, I set my phone on top. When the water reached a certain level, I sunk my body in. The freezing water was almost too much that I almost got out to drain it. But I didn’t; I needed to do this. It has to be done. My confession to Kacchan shouldn’t take too long before the hypothermia sets in. And if needed, I could use OFA briefly to keep me from peaking at moderate. I took one deep breath and grabbed my phone to being. “So, when they came to my room, I was shocked to see who it was. the workers were all females and barely was wearing anything.”

I then just told Kacchan about what the workers were wearing. From how if they were just flat out naked it would have been the same thing as whatever they wore. When I mentioned that, I could see how Kacchan had a soft glow under his face. Which could only mean that he activated his quirk. But what surprised me was how he kept to his word and didn’t interrupt. So I kept talking.

Now came to the part that made me almost vomit in the tub. “And when it came time to take photos, they were touching me in places I was not comfortable with. Two were grabbing my butt and forced my hands in a wet spot.” Kacchan’s eye and lip twitched at that. “Another girl was super close to my private area. It was so horrible that I almost threw up. But at least everyone else had fun.”

I was very happy to find All Might arm warmers. But all I decided to wear was my new hoodie. I pulled it out of the bag to show Kacchan. “I got a cute new sweater!” I walked closer to my phone to show off. “Isn’t it cute!” Which I then finally put it on. “The store didn’t have a medium in stock, so I brought an extra-large.”

“That’s my hoodie now.”

Review #0016: Video Olympics (Atari 2600)

Considering I never ever played the entire first generation of video game consoles, I may have missed out on some sort of big Pong fatigue in the 70s. I mean, just how frickin' many of those consoles are there?

Jesus.

So okay, Video Olympics, also known as Pong Sports, wasn't exactly the freshest game on the block as the final launch game for the 2600. Yet to ME, it is the ideal way to play it. It's the most extensive game by far, clocking in at 50 game modes. It'll be tough to find a larger game for a while.

Graphics (3/5)

I gotta be honest and say that it's just Pong again for the most part. The boatload of new modes don't do much other than add a splash of paint and extra blocks to form the playfield. It's what a launch title for the Atari 2600 generally looks like. Expectations were not high yet, so it's reasonable here- though other games absolutely manage to outdo it. Maybe I was too harsh on Blackjack's table...

They get the point across is what i'm sayin'.

Sound (3/5)

More Pong! Except there's pitch shifts depending on the score now, giving it a bit of a quirky personality in my opinion. This doesn't change between modes, so don't get your hopes up for something crazy. It's alright.

Gameplay (5/5)

Okay, so you get regular old Pong, which already controls better than the original game, at least on Switch, as it feels more smooth and responsive to your inputs. It seems like some sorta Pong Deluxe, with the more funky noises, slight graphical improvements and more difficult (yet beatable!) AI, that yes, once again has 4 settings for you to have a crack against, even if this changes the paddle size rather than how it plays.

My lord, if you have a buddy or family member lying around, you cannot get better than this in 1977. I don't think every mode is a winner here, but only Combat manages to rival the crazy variety this package offers.

That's what I find the most impressive out of all of it. There will be games that have more or a similar amount of modes. None of these will actually have 8, 9, 10 games that throw the rules completely upside down. Stellar.

Longevity (4.5/5)

Pong, Pong Doubles, Quadrapong, Foozpong, Soccer, Handball, Ice Hockey, Basketball AND Volleyball?

Yeah as I said earlier, if you're from the 70s and keep the sessions relatively brief, you're never gonna be done with this one. Imagine the tournaments you could hold with this. Grab a piece of paper or a bracket generator, pen down the winners and scores, bam you have a super early example of eSports at home. I am actually getting excited over that idea as we speak.

For the single player though? I'm sorry. Only regular ol' Pong is available there. That's the thing that keeps this game from hitting it's fullest potential. If it had more to do against an AI than just... what pretty much all Pong consoles already offered, this would have been an easy 5/5.

At least they had an excuse, a complete lack of memory. Like, I get it, but it puts a slight damper on the experience as you absolutely NEED someone else to crack open the quality container.

Overall

Don't let this being another 8 fool you, this is probably my favorite game of this series so far. It trumps Pong by having a better version of it included, even for single players, it's the quinessential second launch game to get after Combat runs out of steam. It's better than Air-Sea Battle and Surround as they respectively have a slightly lamer game concept and less variety.

You'll never need to splash the cash on a Coleco Telstar ever again!
