This year some of my favourite books I read were written by indigenous American authors and I just wanted to shout out a couple that I fell in love with
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Only Good Indians by Stephen Graham Jones
Horror being my second most read genre, I did not think books could still get under my skin the way this one did lol. It follows four Blackfoot men who are seemingly being hunted by a vengeful... something... years after a fateful hunting trip that happened just before they went their separate ways. The horror, the dread, the something... pure nightmare fuel 10/10
Moon of the Crusted Snow by Waubgeshig Rice
An apocalyptic novel following an isolated Anishinaabe community in the far north who lose contact with the outside world. When two of their young men return from their college with dire news, they set about planning on how to survive the winter, but when outsiders follow, lines are drawn in the community that might doom them all. This book is all dread all the time, the use of dreams and the inevitability of conflict weighs heavy til the very end. An excellent apocalypse story if you're into that kind of thing.
My Heart is a Chainsaw by Stephen Graham Jones
This book follows Jade, a deeply troubled mixed race teenager with a shitty homelife who's *obsessed* with slasher movies. When she finds evidence that there's a killer running about her soon-to-be gentrified small town, she weaponises that knowledge to predict what's going to happen next. I don't think this book will work for most people, it's a little stream of consciousness, Jade's head is frequently a very difficult place to be in, but by the last page I had so much love for her as a character and the emotional rollercoaster she's on that I had to mention it here.
Elatsoe by Darcie Little Badger
Taking a bit of a left turn but this charming YA murder mystery really stuck with me this year. Elatsoe is a teenage girl living in an America where myths, monsters, and magic are all real every day occurrences. When her cousin dies mysteriously with no witnesses, she decides to do whatever she can, including using her ability to raise the spirits of dead animals, to solve the case. The worldbuilding was just really fun in this one, but the Native American myths and influence were the shining star for me, and the asexual rep was refreshing to see in a YA book too tbh
Split Tooth by Tanya Tagaq
The audiobook, the audiobook, the audiobook!!!! Also the physical book because formatting and illustrations, but the audiobook!!! Tanya Tagaq is an Inuit throat singer, and this novel is a genre blending of 20 years worth of the authors journal entries, poetry, and short stories, that culminates in a truly unique story about a young girl surviving her teenage years in a small tundra town in the 70s. It is sad and beautiful and hard but an experience like nothing else I read this year.

Isle of the Dead (detail, ca.1905) Karl Wilhelm Diefenbach
* * * *
“What happens to the energy once it leaves our body? Does it leave us or does it start vibrating at an unknown frequency? Does it cast itself into the wind and leave our vessels lonely? Do our spirits travel with the wind? Do our spirits retain our value and ascend into the Knowing or are we demoted when our bodies decay? Are we worthy while we rot? How many layers of consciousness are there? Are we still giving? Is being inanimate really a lesser state? I think not. It is just a slower state. Is the air more enlightened than we are? Land always answers these questions for me. Land protects and owns me. Land feeds me. My father and mother are the Land. My future children are the Land. You are the Land. We destroy her with the same measured ignorance of a self-harming teenager.”

I feel deficient in this class. My mother never speaks to me in Inuktitut anymore. Residential schools have beaten the Inuktitut out of this town in the name of progress, in the name of decency. Everyone wanted to move forward. Move forward with God, with money, with white skin and without the shaman's way. It made me wonder what I was not being taught. It made me wonder why the teachings I was receiving felt like sandpaper against my skin. It made me sad to have Inuktitut slip away. It lives under my subconscious just like the secrets of the teacher do.

What’s the good piece of fiction you mentioned on the Lolita post, with the indigenous author?
Split Tooth by Tanya Tagaq!!! absolutely amazing, she’s also a contemporary throat singer which sometimes is like spoken poetry (Tongues and Aorta are my favorite songs of hers).
Because her content is centered around growing up on a reservation in Canada, she doesn’t hold back with telling stories about what it was like to be a woman there. lots of symbolism, everything (even graphic tw stuff) is honestly very well done because in her wiring style it is simply a fact. It’s in poems and a couple pictures and some more traditional wiring but there is a plot that runs through it.
some of the more basic TWs: SA (of a minor and adults), Monster fucking (it has meaning and stuff but that section is kinda graphic), domestic violence, mention of Boarding schools…
If you’re worried about any of those you should probably read an official list if you can find one or read the first few pages of the book because that really sets the tone for the rest of it.
Phenomenal tho!!!!!

“The sea seems eternal. She offers comfort in the form of Vast Solidarity. Our Original Home. I wonder if the wind currents could mimic the water currents if they had the same viscosity. The Northern Lights mirror each other on opposite sides of the earth. How much is connected? How much can we see while regulated by blood and flesh?”

Quote
My father and I go out with the handgun to kill some foxes. Satisfying dry cracks and snaps of sound as the gun goes off. I feel like a hero for an instant, saving the foxes from a slow death of starvation. My father is strong, self-assured. I hope that someday this fortitude emerges from my fragile psyche. The foxes run. The foxes die. I mourn them, but I understand that there is danger in mourning for those who would not mourn for you in return. Empathy is for those who can afford it. Empathy is for the privileged. Empathy is not for Nature.

I realized that only once my spirit was leaving that all those nights my bedroom door got opened taught me how to be numb, to shut off, to go to the lonely place. I was forced out of my body. I was forced to pretend that I was a shadow. Those nights gave me the pain that has guided me to death. What keeps you alive in crisis can kill you once you are free. One must not choose to die, though one must die anyways.

it may be freak behaviour (yay) but i love when i read a book and there's some folkloric mythological sex scene with a character and something like a gigantic owl or a man who's a fox or northern lights and then it makes strange babies too . i love these things happening and not being acknowledged as strange because rly its symbolic in a way but in general i just love strangeness treated matter of factly

Leaning toward Daisy or Pudding.

There was plenty of famine in the past, in our history. Famine can live in your bones and be passed on to future generations just like your hair colour. There are many ways to be empty.

“For a moment I can see her the way Cold sees warmth. Her fluids must be slowed and stopped. She must be preserved. I realize that Cold is not evil. Cold just doesn’t like rot. Cold doesn’t like change. …Cold wants to halt Time, halt our aging process, halt our movements, and halt our rot.”

Books of 2023: FEED THEM SILENCE by Lee Mandelo.
Currently reading! I'm like ten pages in and I suspect I will be shelving this near Sarah Gailey's THE ECHO WIFE when I'm done with it--love fucked up scientists with dysfunctional domestic lives pushing the edge of their field. (And, yeah, I'm with Riya on this one: Where Are The ETHICISTS??)

Hi Melody! I hope you're having a lovely day/evening!
I am here because I want to know more about your OC Marchosias and to that end I have questions from your ask game! Hopefully these haven't already been sent to you lol but if so please ignore them.
02: Do they have a nickname? 12: What makes them soft? 08: Anything you heavily associate with them? A color, a word, a picture, or something else? 09: How close are they to falling? If they are a fallen angel, what made them fall? 08: Have they given anyone their grimoire?
I hope that's not too many but oh I am curious... also please take your time 💕
Heya CC! Today was a little stressful but overall it was nice. I hope your day is/was also great! 💚
So two of your questions have been asked by others as well, but I have a few more things to say about those, so I'll just answer them again >:)
Also, no amount of questions are too many if I get to talk about my girl Marchosias in return ♡ I'm suffering from brain rot, sent help
⸺ GENERAL INFO 02 ⸺ Do they have a nickname?
So I already answered it over here, but I have two more for her!
The first one is either 'Eden's Apple' or 'Arcadian Apple' (I'm not really sure which one to go with yet whoops). It's only really used in the Celestial Realm and the seraphs were the only ones that referred to Marchosias that way, though Lucifer and Simeon have put a conscious effort into not calling her that anymore. Raphael meanwhile is the only seraph that does not call her that at all
Also, we started calling her Mazey-baby in my friend group recently so uuhhh, yeah I guess that's another nickname of hers now lol
⸺ RELATIONSHIP & PERSONALITY 12 ⸺ What makes them soft?
Oh, there are a few things!
"""Kidnapping""" Mephisto's younger brother, taking him to Devil's Coast and seeing how his face lights up with pure joy every time. Cerberus's existence. When a friend of hers insisted on winning a zombie iguana plush for her from a crane game. Some of the silly little things humans do to show affection toward others (such as warming someone else's hands). First time seeing a firefly. Seeing Luke happy. That one time she and Mephisto wanted to get parfaits at their usual place and the owner rushed over to tell them they have created a new parfait in their honor. Staring at the stars for a while
⸺ CONCEPT AND DESIGN 08 ⸺ Anything you heavily associate with them? A color, a word, a picture, or something else?
One of things I associate with her is parfaits, because I one day randomly decided that she and Mephisto often get parfaits together and gossip talk about RAD News related stuff
The others are stars, because I decided pretty early on that I want her to be fascinated by the night sky which is also why star-related days have a little star on their banner over on @today-in-the-devildom >:) It's kind of ironic though. She is a wingless demon, so even when the stars shift close enough for demons to fly through them, all she can do is watch with longing in her eyes from the ground
⸺ ANGEL 09 ⸺ How close are they to falling? If they are a fallen angel, what made them fall?
Okay, this one is a little tricky to answer, because a) she didn't fall in the classic sence, and b) it requires a lot of background info about how I headcanon things to run in the Celestial Realm
But the short short version is that she was meant to be Raphael's first mission and therefore be killed by him, but he ultimately couldn't bring himself to go through with it and instead helped her escape. She obviously survived, and Raphael was able to avoid punishment
⸺ DEMON 08 ⸺ Have they given anyone their grimoire?
She tried to give it to Lucifer once shortly after the brothers fell, but Lucifer obviously refused to take it. I could explain the reason but it's....long 😭 Just know it's related to something that happened back in the Celestial Realm and she wasn't in the best headspace at the time
Anyway, Barbatos then took it to ensure she wouldn't do anything stupid with it or give it to the next best person and put herself in danger. It's been in his possession ever since and he'll continue to keep it safe until Marchosias decides she wants it back
Right now (aka in the OG timeline) she's considering giving it to my MC. But the idea of giving up so much control over herself is something she still struggles with immensely, despite knowing that my MC wouldn't ever really use it against her in the first place, so she's still debating if she should go through with it or not
-> to the ask game -> to all asks about Marchosias
