Dean being excited to talk about James Dean in 5x05 (Fallen Idols) is so devastating to me because James was literally displayed as the posterboy of masculinity for years whilst he struggled with his own identity, pushed so many of the people closest to him away, was desperately terrified of his bisexuality, excessively drank, barely identified with his home town, had a distant father also a mother that passed away when he was young. Like it's literally him and it's so tragic. They also both died young. (Although James was a lot younger than Dean)(James Dean's life was very interesting too and I recommend researching him if you are interested in old Hollywood or queer history)

Okay, Dean can be an asshole sometimes, I know it, you know it, Sam knows it, hell, Dean knows it. But then he'll let out a legitimately good apology like at the end of Fallen Idols (5x05)

Dean: Listen, I was thinking about what you said yesterday, about me keeping too tight of a leash on you? You know, maybe you were right. I mean look, I'm not exactly Mr. Innocent in this whole mess either. You know I did break the first seal.

Sam: You didn't know.

Dean: Yeah well, neither did you. I'm not saying demon blood was a great way to go but you did kill Lilith.

Sam: And start the apocalypse.

Dean: Which neither of us saw coming. Who'da thought killing Lilith would be a bad thing? Point is, I was so worried about watching your every move that I didn't see what it was actually doing to you. So for that I'm sorry.

He isn't saying that what Sam did was right or even okay, he is just owning up to what he did and apologizing for what it did to Sam, and he's not making excuses. This is a solid, sincere apology.

And then he asks Sam to drive and hands him the keys to Baby, which in Dean-speak is the same as saying, "I trust you." It's a big deal between them and it is really all that Sam is seeking, his brother to trust him as an equal, and Dean gives him that.

reserve the right to cringe later but this isn't as bad as i was expecting, knowing it was an episode featuring paris hilton. as paris hilton (sort of). in fact it's been kinda cute.

SAM It is?

DEAN Almost like his remains.

DEAN looks pointedly at SAM. The OWNER frowns.

the owner dude's vaguely disgusted "ehh" made me cackle. well played, sir. he made the most of this part for sure.

DEAN You ain't steering this boat. Let's go, chop chop.

SAM You know, this isn't gonna work.

DEAN What isn't?

SAM Us. You, me, together, I—I thought it could, but it can't.

DEAN You're the one that wanted back in, chief.

SAM And you're the one who called me back in.

DEAN I still think we got some trust building to do.

SAM How long am I gonna be on double-secret probation?

DEAN Till I say so.

SAM Look. I know what I did. What I've done. And I am trying to climb out of that hole, I am, but you're not making it any easier.

DEAN So what am I supposed to do, just let you off the hook?

SAM No. You can think whatever you want. I deserve it, and worse. Hell, you'll never punish me as much as I'm punishing myself, but the point is, if we're gonna be a team, you and I—it has to be a two-way street.

DEAN So we just go back to the way we were before?

SAM No, because we were never that way before. Before didn't work.

SAM How do you think we got here?

DEAN What's that supposed to mean?

SAM Dean, one of the reasons I went off with Ruby...was to get away from you.

DEAN What?

SAM It made me feel strong. Like I wasn't your kid brother.

DEAN Are you saying this is my fault?

SAM No, it's my fault. All I'm saying is that, if we're gonna do this, we have to do it different, we can't just fall into the same rut.

DEAN What do you want me to do?

SAM You're gonna have to let me grow up, for starters.

ouch. good on sam for standing up for himself. i don't... really remember that dynamic being so black and white back then, but there's so many episodes and so much happening who knows.

pleasantly surprised how they did this, and how she played it. kind of poking fun at herself but nothing over the top.

something that bugs me, but also i understand, but continues to bug me is how everyone is placing the blame on sam for starting the apocalypse. he played a part, that he was manipulated and tricked into, and the powers that be wanted it to happen and didn't do anything to stop it. if we're gonna place the blame on sam like this, then it should equally placed on dean for breaking the first seal. i don't think either is fair. it was a systemic thing that lead to those events coming to pass, the individuals being forced into playing certain parts. anyway. it feels like every turn it's like well SOMEONE STARTED THE APOCALYPSE and yeah, okay, but also, no. :p

LESHI And this belonged to him. Didn't it? Poor little Dean. All you ever wanted was to be loved by your idol. One distant father figure, coming right up.

SAM Dude. You just got whaled on by Paris Hilton!
