My actual favorite thing about the not-date-Nora-scene is that Cas is bumbling his way into this not-date, and...

even though Cas is narratively positioned as this "lame-ass, geeky little failure"

even though the ep opens with the hur-dee-durp guys in the gas station being all "macho-macho"

even though Nora was being so weird and leading-on-ish in how she asked Cas "out"

We pan over, and there's Dean (fellow nerd, let's be honest) and despite some classist digs about minimum wage, on the whole, he is still so heart-eyes for Cas. 😍 

No, seriously. Dean thought the rose was "a nice touch." Romantic, even. 🌹

I mean, Dean woulda appreciated that rose. He woulda.

But let's face it. It was dorky--I mean, he cut it from Nora's own garden! (Oh, Cas.)

Later, in 9x10, we'll get this gem from the Crowley's bespectacled demon spy, Cecily: "I mean, human Castiel? Eh. But feathered Castiel? Hot."

So, everyone's a little ga-ga for Cas. But the thing is, Dean is ga-ga for him even when he's...human-ish. To Dean, he's "hot" either way.

okay guys i did it, i finished the fic i was writing! (thank you so much to everyone who cheered me on, i needed it)

it is for day 1 of our creators celebration (only two days late) for the prompt carver era destiel

this is something that's been bouncing around in my head since I watched this episode (9x06 heaven can't wait) a few months ago and realized that it was never explained what happened between when they leave nora's house and when they get to the gas'n'sip the next morning. it's the fanfiction gap, I've since been told. 

this is actually kind of a lead in to a long moc/demon dean fic that I have planned so it kind of leaves everything pretty unfinished between dean and cas.

When the Night is Over

Summary: Dean feels bad about kicking, now human, Cas out of the bunker.

Canon compliant 9x06 Heaven Can't Wait fic that fills the gap between when Dean and Cas leave Nora's house and when Dean drops Cas off at the Gas'N'Sip the next morning.

Dean hadn’t even meant to find Castiel. Not yet anyway. He hadn’t really even decided to look for him yet. Cas had made it clear he didn’t want to see him, and anyway, Dean wouldn’t have had any idea where to even begin looking for him. Before yesterday, he hadn’t even known what state Cas was in. 

But here he is, first stop after arriving in town and checking out the crime scene and checking into the motel. He’s stopped at the Gas’N’Sip, getting gas for the impala. And there he is. Like a string had been tugging Dean toward the former angel all along.

Dean stands, leaning against Baby’s roof, with his phone pressed to his ear and a coffee cup that he’d grabbed from the motel before he left in his other hand, only half listening and responding to Sam, while the rest of him watches Cas standing behind a cash register. He looks so unbearably human. Dean’s stomach flips at the sight of it. The angel of the lord that gripped him tight and raised him from perdition counting change back to a middle aged man buying a pack of cigarettes.

“That sounds like a real case. Dean, I should be there.”

Dean’s attention is pulled back into his conversation with Sam. He isn’t sure why, but he doesn’t want Sam to come here. 

“Naw, man. That's – That's uh ... not necessary. No, I, uh – I got this one covered.” 

When Dean hangs up with Sam, his attention gravitates back to Castiel, now bagging a purchase for another customer. He’s wearing a white long sleeve, collared shirt and a bright blue work vest. Rolled sleeves reveal tanned forearms. He’s wearing jeans. Dean has never seen Castiel in jeans before now. Not this Castiel anyway, not his Cas.

Everything about what he’s seeing feels wrong. 

Dean taps his phone softly on the hood of the impala before pushing away from the car and stuffing the phone in his pocket. 

It’s not like he can avoid talking to him now.

dean is surprised by cas' situation - his location, and specifically his job. he says he knew cas had to lay low but was surprised by the extent of his cover. and it reads to me like dean was expecting cas to be hidden away somewhere like rufus' cabin - off the grid, away from people and danger. dean is neither stupid nor insensitive - he knows what it takes to survive. so his surprise suggests to me something others have brought up - that he did set cas up with money, food, and resources after 09x03. if he really had sent cas away with nothing, he wouldn't be surprised that cas was working, right?

To summarize a bunch of long self rb streams of consciousness into a slightly more concise story.

AU idea: instead of Jack the Nephilim in post season 12, Cas gets a Nephilim child in Season 9 (baby Tanya), and finds himself through the love for his child much earlier. Crowley gets a celestial daughter who is not ungrateful like Amara. Also Crowstiel. And hellhound Juliet.

AU starting from S9e6 Heaven Can't Wait. No Dean, just Cas working in Gas-n-sip, babysitting Tanya. A bunch of Malachi's angel thugs came to abduct her, because she turned out to be a Nephilim, and they wanted to enslave her and harvest her power. They captured Cas as well, and similar to "Holy Terror", Cas escaped by killing Theo, taking his grace, and rescuing baby Tanya.

He brings baby Tanya back to Nora who of course was not the birth mother but the sister of the birth mother who died in childbirth. Nora was not a very good mother because this responsibility was forced on her. But she had a redemption arc where she felt genuinely guilty after Tanya had been aducted, realized she loved the baby after all. When Cas brought her back she asked for Cas' protection because the Nephilim will continue to be hunted.

Cas agreed and they went into hiding. Then baby Tanya was taken by Crowley who wanted to raise her in hell so he can access her tremendous potential power, much like his plans for Amara in the show. But instead of the ungrateful Amara, baby Tanya was just a sweet baby, and responded to Crowley's care with affection, and he became legit fond of her.

Cas marched into hell to rescue Tanya, and fought with Crowley and his demons. Tanya was confused and freightened and lashed out with her power, and it was so intense it broke the cage and Lucifer got out. So Lucifer now saw how powerful the Nephilim was and decided to take her and drain her grace to feed himself because he had been weakened by the cage (but still very powerful).

Cas fought Lucifer to save Tanya and was losing badly when Crowley joined the fight, risking his own life, much as in "rock never dies". Cas saw that Crowley genuinely cared about Tanya. Together they managed to rescue Tanya and escape from Lucifer.

Cas and Crowley had a heart-to-heart and Cas let go of his resentment and prejudice against Crowley. They go on the run from Lucifer together: Cas, Crowley, Nora, Tanya, and hellhound Juliet. In Castiel's continental.

The angel, the demon and the reformed human mother raised baby Tanya together. The Nephilim learned angel powers from Cas, hell's magic from Crowley. She also took on Castiel's kindness, and Crowley's cunning. Nora gave her experiences of a normal human child. She had a best friend in hellhound Juliet.

Just like Jack, this powerful Nephilim child had three parents. But zero out of 3 parents tried to extract her grace, or lock her in a box, or kill her.

They still have a lot of problems. Metatron and the angel factions were still wreaking havoc. Cas was still dying slowly from stolen grace. On the side Dean still got Mark of Cain which was ominous. But for a period of time Cas and Crowley had a happy family together.
