The Bugs and Creatures I've seen so far this Christmas. The beetle is my favorite - I think the picture is gorgeous. Bonus: a dinosaur who is judging me pretty hard.
@onenicebugperday I tried to submit some of these to your blog but Tumblr wasn't cooperating - I hope you appreciate the Creatures anyway! No IDs necessary.
The first spider is Argiope argentata - this isn't a great picture but it is a fantastic spider, one of my favorites. It has a beautiful silver - literally silver, literally shiny - abdomen with these sort of yellowish spots that look like they're glowing from inside. I wish I could get the perfect shot of it, but unfortunately it lives in the middle of cacti and I do NOT want to get spiked.
The second spider - the spindly one - is some kind of cellar spider, from the family Pholcidae. It is my roommate and it lives on my bedside table here.
The crab is a swimming crab, or rather the shed skin of a swimming crab. By the size of the tail (small) we can tell this belonged to a male crab.
The caterpillars are all the larva of Estigmene acrea, the saltmarsh tiger moth.
IDK what species the beetle is but it's what we call a "stink beetle" around here. I've always been skeptical of this because I well and truly pissed that beetle off but I didn't smell anything.
And I think the dinosaur is a Red-Shouldered Hawk.
If anyone wants to correct my identifications or add to them, I'd love to hear.

I haven’t done this for a long while; just looking up whatever random bugs I can think of, then picking images to reference from.
And I actually remembered to write down their names this time

April 1960: John and Paul record a band practice on a Grundig reel-to-reel recorder at the McCartney home. Contributors are in dispute but are thought to include at least Stuart Sutcliffe on bass. The tape of this practice ends up in Astrid Kirchherr's possession and may have been a practice tape for Stuart as he was learning bass. It’s later released as part of a bootleg, The Braun-Kirchherr Tapes.

ok so i know the bros are still their usual turtle selves in the actual brosquitos plot but like between ur mosquitello and intotheelliwoods' beetle saga leo (beetlenardo??) i feel like im just waiting for mikey and raph to get bugified.
like mikey with his spots would make an excellent ladybug of course, or maybe some sort of spotted butterfly?
raph hmm thats harder -- there are some really cool horned beetles of course but we dont want to infringe on leos territory.... maybe like a spiky sort of shield bug? also called stink bugs, which is perhaps appropriate for the boy with so many emotional stinks
yes yes you raise good points!
i think after i finish some of my current aus, they might just get a turn with the extra mutagen and curses.
as a treat.

Rare bug post again showcasing some new guys I found the other day
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For names I only know the field cricket and the brown prionid (big beetle) but there’s also a very small wasp and some kind of stinkbug here too; all of which I found in some pool filters. Because they were all still very saturated with water I pinned them as soon as possible and only lost a part of the cricket’s antennae.
Also a small story about the prionid: I once found one while camping and really, really wanted it so badly because holy hell beetle I’ve never seen before and they’re big. It was dead of course, brought to me by the campground owner while they were cleaning out sinks in this area so I fully assumed it had drowned. Here’s some pictures I took of it for reference at the time:

Obviously there’s some differences and I haven’t done research outside of finding out it’s name but some assumptions are maybe mine is the opposite sex? Or not mature? I’m unsure because these pictures showcase this one being larger in all aspects. So anyways, continuing with the story, I took these pictures because I was curious because again, new bug. I put it in a container with paper towels to keep it from getting rattled around because I planned to take it home to pin it. Come next morning and this beetle is very alive and glaring with a vengeance, it was surreal watching the way it moved. I ended up letting it go after a bit of observing because I don’t like the idea of killing it just to collect it.

Bugs I saw today! Left is a brown marmorated stink bug (haymorpha halys) and right is what I’m pretty sure is an eastern carpenter bee (xylocopa virginica). Unfortunately the bee was very lethargic and likely about to die, I put it under some tall grass and let it be after taking the photo.
I also saw a click beetle (not sure of the species) and some carpenter ants but didn’t take any photos. I love click beetles, they’re one of my favorite types of bug :3

epic dad moment when u break both of ur wrist 💔💔💔
he’s doing better though!!! he needs surgery later to ensure he doesn’t get arthritis from this but right now we’re just waiting for him to get the final okay to go home. Never in my life did I envision a world where I would have to roll over my fathers bloody body in the mud and call 911. He was temporarily paralyzed for a couple of hours. So scary but I kept my head and the ambulance came within 20 minutes ;_;)
Now I have to hand feed him, which is totally bizarre. I didn’t think I’d be doing stuff like this until he was truly sick and old. School is definitely out of the question atm _(┐「ε:)_ I’M IN MY LIVE-IN CARETAKER ERA I GUESS…..

@calamitydarcy submitted: rescued this little guy from my pool!! i believe it’s a pinacate beetle! he thanked me by sticking his abdomen at me and politely warning me to leave before he stink sprayed at me lol
Yep, looks like a darkling beetle in the genus Eleodes, which are also called pinacate beetles or desert stink beetles. Glad they were rescued and still feeling feisty :)

do you have a favorite beetle? my backyard gets this type alot (idk what theyre called) and they hang out with me and seem really friendly! the one in the picture hung out with me for hours!
Tumblr media
I THINK that’s a type of shield bug/stink bug potentially? Or a conifer seed bug it’s sorta hard to tell from that angle. I’d say my favourites are probably stags and rhino beetles! But I also have a super soft spot for Green June beetles (Cotinis nitida) because I saw them a lot growing up!
