This year I decided I wanted to honor the incredibly talented fic writers of this fandom, so I chose one fic per prompt to do an illustration for. I didn’t double up on authors so that I could do this for as many people as possible. I realized while planning this that there are way too many fics and authors that I love, and even after having picked 30 of what I consider some of my very favorites, I could have easily kept going. WIP Wednesday

Hiya! Thanks for the tag @cutestkilla!

So last week I posted about a new WIP that features a deaf character that I am trying very hard to write. Over the last week I have spent many many hours reading everything I could find on writing deaf characters, types of hearing loss, types of assistive listening devices, mainstream schools vs specialized schools, and what support students are entitled to in the classroom (and what support students actually get in the classroom -- they are, unfortunately, not the same list). I also spent hours just writing about this character -- her likes, dislikes, her family, childhood, etc.

Next up I plan to do more reading about the kinds of support available in schools both in the US and in the UK and the experiences of being deaf or hard of hearing in mainstream school, and whatever else I happen upon along the way. I also have more to write about this character just to flesh her out some more, and I often randomly think of something about her while I'm in the middle of something else and have to stop what I'm doing and write it down. After I feel like I've got her character and her role in the story pretty well built out, I'll write out a nice summary and look for a sensitivity reader to hopefully talk through it with! (If you are deaf/HoH and interested, pleaaaase hmu!)

Anyway, here's a short snippet of the WIP, and more Penny POV. I'm not sure if it will stay or not. I may be projecting my own practices onto Penny.... (Also no shade if you do use tarot cards as divinatory tools rather than self-reflection tools. This is just Penny's judgy scientific side coming through.)(We all know she's not the spiritual type.)(Scientific sounds weird though since it's in a very magical setting, but that's what it is? Magical science?)

Penny:

Journaling is a practice I started when Shepard and I started dating and I realized it was serious (it didn’t take long after that first kiss, really). I wanted to pay more attention to myself and my actions. I didn’t want to repeat past mistakes. It has served me well, so far. I even go so far as to use tarot cards sometimes when I’m having a hard time identifying what I’m experiencing. Tarot decks aren’t innately magical items. They’re not even a tool typically used by mages. They’re primarily used by Normals who believe they can see the future— a claim yet to be proven. I reluctantly picked them up at Shepard’s suggestion. Apparently there are some Normals, even therapists, who use it as a tool of self-reflection. I hate to say it, but it does help to get myself unstuck and get my thoughts flowing. The thoughts are coming, but the connections aren’t forming. Something about this is itching me, telling me there’s more to scratch. (That’s a feeling I’ve picked up on in journaling, too. That I’m not quite getting to the truth of my own psyche.) I pull a card.

Carry On Through The Ages Signups

Signups for Carry On Through The Ages are now open!

You can access the Google Forms HERE. The signup form will remain opened until April 30th. Please do not wait until the last day to signup. While I am usually pretty lenient with late signups, try to respect the schedule.

I’m about to be kinda self indulgent under the cut so.

Thinking about Stormchaser (Cybertronian!Stormy) in ES.

Like obviously they would be a single-episode/rarely appears character but like the character(s) they would probably be featured with are Thrash and/or Nightshade.

They would obviously be older than the Terrans, but way younger than Bee, so they settle very nicely into an older sibling/cousin relationship rather than a paternal one.

Nightshade 🤝 Stormchaser

Being non-binary people with introverted natures, names that do not match their alt mode or skillset, and a secondary color plus grey as their main colors.

Thrash and Stormy do not shake hands nearly as much but they make very good foils as the loud, boisterous one and the quite, shy one. They both have a rebelious streak and would kill for their loved ones—they have that in common for sure.

Anyways their misadventure would probably involve Nightshade and/or Thrash offering to help Stormchaser find their mentor (cough Ratchet.) after Arachnamechs attacked them and they had to split up to avoid capture.

Through this the Terrans can learn a little bit about how Cybertronians traditionally don’t have parents in the sense of someone to call “Mom” or “Dad.”

But older Cybertronians will take in the younger ones to mentor and basically act as their parent. Stormy would have also been created very close to the start of the war to somewhere in the middle, so their bond with their mentor is very tight and forged on a battlefield etc etc.

And they gets a cool new word to call Ratchet: Dad. Because the Terrans learning how Cybertronians born on Cybertron do it just isn’t fun without that cultural exchange.

Also the concept of the youngins kicking spider bot ass all on their own, or Ratchet kicking spider bot ass to save the youngins good.

And upon finding Ratchet, he’s of course thrilled about new life. But he’s still grumpy as hell and also trying to get Nightshade and Thrash to get their siblings and bring them to him for medical exams.
