Strangest flower ever. But strangely beautiful in its fluttery, flitter, flirty way. Texas Mountain Laurel. This tree lived next door to my son in Nevada until it inexplicably met a fateful end. I saved one of the flowers & it sits in a cream pitcher in my kitchen window. It isn’t fluttery like the photo. It kinda flattened out. I have the only evidence that the tree lived & flourished. This haunting, vaguely otherworldly scene is emblematic of the eerie, inscrutable romance of the Louisiana Bayou Country. The weather frequently shifts abruptly from scorchingly sunny to this sort of ominous yet strangely beautiful overcast ambience seen here. The swamps and forests seem to whisper about you, casting an enigmatic vibe across one's surroundings, as if a traveler has somehow veered off a road into the intoxicating tones of a pre-Raphaelite painting. It's an extraordinary tonic for songwriting, and scenes like these greeted me on a recent trip through the state. Tapestries of the sky and land like this helped to inspire one of my most productive songwriting stretches in recent memory, so much so that the band's second album is now well in the works. I will be the first to say that I am absolutely not a fan of spiders. No way, no how! In fact, I have been known to absolutely freeze up at being around a spider. Yes, I have a touch of arachnophobia. However, I found myself absolutely fascinated by this spider weaving its web in my front yard. I stood there and watched for several minutes at the artistry of it creating its web. The web is a fascinating thing. The spider, itself, is heavier than what the web seem to be able to handle, but the strands held fast. Bringing one of my favorite things back to this timeline. Story time:

I don't tend to cosplay as my characters but Miss Percy is my dearest heart-of-hearts, the cornerstone of my first great love; my debut series, a Gothic, Gaslamp Fantasy saga with ghostly, Jane Eyre-meets-High Fantasy vibes.

Miss Percy is a radiant, shy, beautiful soul who I wanted to show to the world during her debut year, so I sat for a professional photographer and spent an evening letting her out into the world. Yes, she's a reincarnate goddess she doesn't remember being, but her sweet, deeply shy nature and modest, gentle, soft and loving personality make her a character that I remain fiercely protective of. I can't imagine my life without her.

What was heartbreaking to me about the night I spent as my beloved heroine is that even though it was Halloween at a lavish ball, people still started, gasped and avoided me; unsettled by Percy's appearance. Just as it is for her in the book, she is shunned and avoided until she meets her true love and her found family. My heart broke for my beautiful girl. It has meant so much to give her a love story with her very own brooding Gothic hero, a happy ending, and a world full of magic, mystery and ghosts that still resonates with readers. (Thank you!)

Percy would want me to tell all of you that even though this has been a very hard year, she wants you to know you're stronger than your sorrows, you're brave and resilient just for being and she has every hope you'll shine into the new year. She wants you to know that you are loved. She wants you to listen to the spirits and know they want the best for you. Past, present and future. She hopes your heart will be aglow with magic and that you'll share that light with those around you.
