Do you have any tips for first time cat owners? I’m not getting one any time soon, but I’d love to have one in the future.

If you can, try to get a good vibe for the kitty before you get it. If you’re wanting a sweetheart, you probably want to see if there’s chemistry first. There’s no science to it, and some cats will be too young to even know how they’re really going to be when you meet them anyway, but...sometimes you know. For example, my friend has a delightful cat named Sweet Tea, who chose us as we were looking around a Petco. Her and her siblings were cute, but as we watched, this kitten only seemed to call out to us, and actively shied away from others who stopped by. For some reason, she knew she liked us. So, my friend adopted her, and she’s a very loving sweetheart of a cat.

Now, ever cat adoption story isn’t that magical, so just keep that in mind. Try your best to steel your heart and not just fall in love with the first fluffer that purrs for you. It’s a big decision, and the cat will be with you for a long time. 

Making sure your environment is cat friendly is an even bigger deal. If you’re a cluttered, chaotic type of person at home, that’s going to stress a cat out. If you’re worried about that, watch a few cat behavior shows, Jackson Galaxy is fantastic and a lot of his stuff deals with what to long time cat owners might seem obvious, but to newbs might be a huge revelation. Things like litterboxes, food and water placement, and cat-safe spaces and furniture matter a lot. Even if your cat would be happy with a box and some discarded paper, it is better to be overprepared than under. For example, for my kitten I completely catified my bedroom, I’ve got three pieces of cat furniture and steps up to my bed, a litterbox in the bathroom, etc. and ya know.....she just sleeps between my arms on my desk, but having a cat friendly space is still important because she’ll grow into things.

Know your lifestyle and know what kind of cat is compatible with it. If you’re working full time and live alone, it can be a struggle for a cat to adjust depending on their age and temperament, but the more cat friendly your space is, the more you can do to create a situation that works. Like if you put a cat in a room with the aforementioned cardboard box and discarded paper, food, water, and litter...that cat is going to be bored out of its mind in 5 minutes.

If you had a complete “catified” room on the other hand, you have a lot more space to do whatever you need to do without worrying about your new cat friend going nuts in your home unsupervised. Then as they grow and learn and feel a sense of ownership over the space and you, you can expand their space and give them more room. That’s a very careful way of doing things, and again, it’ll depend on the cat’s history and socialization and alllll that stuff. But I think giving any pet a place that is theirs is really important. Learning how to put yourself in the shoes of a pet is important. If you were just carted away from a shelter, or your mom and litter mates for the first time ever, and dropped into a new location with a stranger...that’s scary! So creating room for them to become confident and secure is the very first building block of developing a good relationship with a happy pet.

Can you tell I watched a lot of animal videos recently? LMFAO I had pets my whole life and suddenly suffered a huge wave of doubt and anxiety, so I logged several hours of research over the past month.
