How you met: Civilian This was the last place you would expect Johnny Mactavish to be in. But here he was eyeing the tarot cards and crystals around the store. He had no intention of buying them but something about the image of the cashier wearing a long black skirt and a top with infinite constellations drew him in. "Hi sir, can I help you?" a voice called behind him as he examined another deck. "Just looking for something, not sure what," he said and turned to look at the cashier who stood in front of him. He took in the sight of you in front of him, noticing how you were adored with crystal jewelry which perfectly completed the silver constellations on your blouse. "I can tell you that generally these decks call to you. Keeping looking and I'm sure you'll find it," you smiled before returning back to organizing the shelves. After a while, the man returned to your register with a nice deck and a collection of crystals. As you were checking him out, you commented on the arrangement of stones he had brought you. "Quite a collection you have here," you spoke and he looked up at you, "rose quartz, aventurine, garnet, kunzite, and chrysocolla. Looks like someone is looking for love," you giggled. Johnny took a few seconds before responding and blinked as you finished wrapping the delicate crystals. "Um ye no hen at home for me, just me and all these crystals," he replied and you noticed the soft blush on his cheeks. "Well I'm always here if you want to stop by for a quick conversation or tarot reading," you smiled back at him. "Might take you up on that bonnie lass," he said before taking his bag and heading out of the story. As he walked out, you didn't have the heart to tell him that he picked the most expensive deck, his total coming out to €95,62.

A peek into your relationship: "Johnny are you sure about this?" you asked as he led you into the tattoo parlour. "It's just some ink, hen," he said as he gently kissed your forehead. As your boyfriend settled in the chair, you held his other hand as the tattoo artist prepped his bicep. "Beautiful work," the artist complemented and Johnny had a large smile on his face. "The best," he said and you blushed at the compliment. The entire 3hr session, Johnny entertained you with some random facts he had known and you laughed endlessly at his jokes. When it was finally over, you walked to his side and saw the tattoo. You marveled at how the artist perfectly transferred your vision onto your boyfriend's arm. "I love it!" you exclaimed as the artist applied saniderm to the area. "Good, now you can get one of my sketches on you," Johnny joked as you shook your head and laughed.

Styled by the Stars - EnspiRED Runway’s Empyrean

For some Michigan students, January means nothing more than wind, cold, and late-night study sessions. But, for the University of Michigan fashion organization EnspiRED, this month has been leading up to a highly anticipated and impeccably curated fashion show. The theme for this year: Empyrean– a vogue take on astrology adorned with a namesake synonymous to “heaven at its highest form”. 

EnspiRED shows are not something ordinary to any university campus. The entirely student-run organization executes these events every year, hosting hundreds of alumni, student, and parent spectators alike in the atrium of the Taubman Biomedical Sciences Research Building. These are not your typical fashion shows. Whereas haute couture shows at any given fashion week function in a please-hold-your-applause environment, EnspiRED offers something much different. Attendees need no permission to stand and hype-up their loved ones strutting down the catwalk. This is an event where fashion meets community, and music meets culture. 

Even if you know nothing about astrology, what should be known is that it has become a mainstream movement. Beyond horoscopes, it offers a sense of individualism and comfort for its followers. Astrology has ancient roots, dating back to the days of Babylon. Symbolic figures and animals were adapted from constellations, which were given their own personalities. You have a set constellation for each ‘house’, denoted from the position of the stars in the sky during the time you were born. Empyrean encapsulated six of these houses: the Sun, the Moon, the Ascendant, Mars, Venus, and finally, Lilith (the dark moon). Each house has its own meaning, and this was well reflected on the runway.

While attendees last year saw glamorous looks with the theme “allure,” heads also turned to witness a beautiful manifestation of each individual astrological category. Still, EnspiRED doesn’t limit itself to thematically encapsulating clothing. Music was fundamentally entwined throughout the show. In fact, Music and fashion are what defines the EnspiRED creative direction, led by Vice President of Creative Design DeLorean Slaughter.

“I would like the biggest takeaway to be that...  astrology is not necessarily a monolith”– DeLorean tells me while taking a quick break from rushing backstage, helping to coordinate what is unarguably one of the University of Michigan’s largest fashion events of the year. He is in charge of every single creative aspect of the event– curating the music from his own personal playlist, working closely with image consultants to assemble clothing, and even directing where to place the stage and lighting. Seamlessly, he’s merged a very unique topic within the fashion world to create Empyrean.

Executing this visuals of such an event is no easy task. Months prior to the show, DeLorean teamed up with EnspiRED’s image consultants Cameron Cox and Ritisha Ghosh to relay the concept for the production. Their job is to search for designers and clothing stores to assist in matching the vision of the theme. They take stylistic inputs and manifest them in order to make the fashion reflect the concept.

A massive stage, extensive lighting, beautiful atmosphere, and a team of dozens of style-loving individuals are what solidified then-prospective student Jasmine Williams’ decision to study business here at U-M. Now, as the current President of EnspiRED, she recalls hearing “Pyramids” by Frank Ocean playing during a scene of the show she first attended and describes it as an experience she’ll never forget.

What one can find at New York Fashion Week, one can find at an EnspiRED show. As president, it’s Jasmine’s role to coordinate all bodies involved in making the show as professional as possible. For three hours every Sunday since October, she sat in a large room alongside fellow executive board members while models walked in their direction, drilling every detail meticulously. The show marks the end of a months-long journey to perfect the show, to a tee– “It’s definitely our moment. Everyone has so much involvement.”

An extension of the organization’s professionalism is easily observed when the runway clears. The show and its engagement with both campus and community is far from over. Each year, EnspiRED donates proceeds from the show to a charity of choice. Here's what you should know about the March for Our Lives:

What is it? March for Our Lives is a demonstration created and organized by #NeverAgain, a group of students who survived the February 14 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Everytown for Gun Safety, a gun control advocacy group, is helping the students plan and coordinate the event.

After the shooting at Stoneman Douglas, in addition to the many others that have occurred this year, organizers are calling on lawmakers to address the issue of gun violence in American schools by implementing comprehensive gun control legislation.

According to a petition on the event's website, March for Our Lives has three primary demands: 1. Pass a law to ban the assault weapons frequently used to carry out mass shootings. 2. Stop the sale of high-capacity magazines, restricting the amount of ammunition. 3. Close loopholes in America's background checks and implement laws that require background checks on every gun purchase, including those that occur online or at gun shows

When was is it? The main march took place in Washington D.C. on Saturday, March 24, 2018, at noon. Participants gathered on Pennsylvania Avenue, just blocks away from the Capitol. Hundreds of sister marches also took place across the country and around the world.
