In the Barbie movie, there is a gentleman in a green blazer with a bit of a scandalous name.
Tumblr media
This is Palm Beach Sugar Daddy Ken.
I had never heard of this guy before I saw the movie, but since I recognised all the other named Barbies (and many background Barbies!) I thought for sure this must be a real doll that had somehow slipped me by.
That, it turns out, is only kind of true.
Tumblr media
In 2009, to celebrate Barbie's 50th anniversary, there were a number of different special edition Barbies released. Pictured above is Palm Beach Sugar's Daddy Ken, a Silkstone Barbie doll for adult collectors, modeled after Slim Aaron's Palm Springs Party.
Tumblr media
But as I'm sure you've all noticed, "Sugar's Daddy" Ken is a bit of a... poorly thought out name. It sounds awfully similar to another phrase.
I can't find any pictures of the doll in box or evidence that it actually hit shelves - despite this quote from a Mattel spokesperson about the unfortunately chosen name.
"At the end of the day, this collection is targeted toward adults," said spokeswoman Michelle Chidoni. "While the name of the doll does refer back to the dog, I think people are going to interpret it as they want to interpret it."

Don't mind me, just thinking about what if scenarios for my found family movie with jets.
Like, what if instead of Maverick being emotionally constipated and making a life altering decision for his kid based on a promise to a dying woman who was probably stressed, depressed and etc...he talked to his kid and let him make an informed decision??
And then, when Rooster joins the Navy anyway, his biggest issue isn't feeling like he has no one, or that he was a disappointment to the one person he had left - it's dealing with superiors that in some cases don't like Maverick and therefore him, or the occasional opposite that make it very difficult to be taken seriously when they slip in front of his peers and call him some childhood pet name like gosling. Baby Goose. Duckling.
Iceman would be the best at not broadcasting their relationship until Brad Brad is hurt in an accident that could have been prevented and he verbally eviscerates the commanding officer. No, he doesn't do it in front of anyone, because he's professional, but EVERYONE knows.
Oh and Rooster?? Nah, not because he's got a big dick, wakes up or alternatively hates waking up at the ass crack of the morning or waits for the perfect moment because he second guesses himself too much or all the other theories...he's called Rooster cause he was Maverick's wakeup call to stop being a himbo.
And poor Hangman. He's torn between wanting to give the proverbial teacher's pet shit and wanting to know absolutely everything he can about him because THE Iceman would clearly kill a bitch for him.

As an important update to a previous post I have made... on October 12 this year, Mattel finally recreated Sugar's Daddy Ken as a tie-in for the film.
Tumblr media
As I noted in my previous post on this gent, it appears as though he was originally intended to be released as a Silkstone doll but never actually hit shelves. Now that his appearance in the film was so popular, he again has his day in the sun.
Although it doesn't say on the front of the box, the official name for this doll is "“Sugar’s Daddy” Ken Doll in Pastel Suit With Dog – Barbie The Movie".
Tumblr media
Unlike many other Barbie The Movie tie in dolls, however, Sugar's Daddy is not available in retail stores - he is a member's exclusive, and was limited to 2 orders per person.
This rerelease does provide a little extra context for those of us who were puzzled by his appearance. Frequent Mattel doll designer Robert Best had this to say:
Sugar’s Daddy was only ever a prototype, and had never been produced. Being able to finally make him available is pretty awesome.

Palm Beach Sugar Daddy Ken has a brief cameo in the Barbie movie. Although he was slated for release in 2010 as part of the Palm Beach Silkstone Barbie collection, it seems that concerns about the implications of his name ultimately caused Mattel to pull the doll after photos were circulated by the press in 2009.
A Women's Wear Daily article suggests that his main outfit was based on a Slim Aarons photograph from the 1970s, which I think is plausible as well as likely.
