My arms are sore just watching that. Wipe Out by The Ventures circa 1985 with guest second drummer Max Weinberg. Below is a clip of The Ventures performing it live in the 1960's.
youtube
Wipe Out was originally written and recorded by The Surfaris in 1963. The Ventures did a cover version of it the same year.
Band members changed over the years but I think The Ventures in both clips are Don Wilson, Bob Bogle, Nokie Edwards and the drummer Mel Taylor. "Mighty Max" Weinberg was at that time the drummer of the E Street Band. I notice that Mel holds his left drumstick differently to his right one (in what I think is called the traditional grip), while Max grips them both the same way. I'm not a drummer so I don't know what the effect of that is.
As a special treat here are The Ventures, again with Max from the same TV special, playing the theme to Hawaii Five-O with which they had a hit single in 1969.

[Bit annoyed about this one.  I just did the original version of this soundtrack not too long ago when the first seven episodes of Season 4 came out.  Now, with the last two episodes coming out this weekend, they’ve elected to release a new version of the soundtrack with six bonus tracks.  No indication that this is a new version of the soundtrack (the Deluxe Edition tag is my own addition) so no way of telling which version to get just on sight.  Either they’ve should’ve released this version when the first seven episodes dropped or they’ve should’ve waited to drop the soundtrack until this weekend alongside the score.  Side note: the score is long.  Like, over three hours long.]
[Oh, major side note to Kate Bush: congrats on “Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)” getting to #1 in the UK (and pretty damn close in the US).  Any particular reason why this is the only song on the soundtrack not available in the streaming package?]
[The soundtrack is currently only available digitally (Apple Music, Spotify, iTunes, you know the drill).  There will be a physical release but a) it’s vinyl only and b) it won’t be until November 4th.]

St Thomas Day 5: Oops, I forgot a few things!
Apologies, apparently when I made albums on my phone, I got dates wrong, I knew we did more on day 5! Let me tell you about the rest of the day! It’s December 26th, we were up before dawn, go figure, not a new occurance on this trip for some reason, but it afforded us the opportunity to see some amazing sunrises and today was no different! We decided to go down to the beach to watch the…

Places to find/buy Morning Christmas - 2024 random streaming/download only comps edition.
- the "load of weird/unofficial looking mostly elf or gingerbread themed digital only Christmas compilations" featuring it mentioned last year have vanished but it's still on six short compilations with overlapping artists, all ℗© Trass Media Inc - one's even titled after it. (all UK amazon music links)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In The Valley Of Santa Claus ("I Saw Mommy Kissing Sant Clause" smh - doesn't even tell you who's singing it, manages to spell Claus right on the title track though, turns out to be some kid who can't really sing but they do sound appropriately depressed for once.)
Christmas Makes the Town (amazon's fucked up & tagged Bing Crosby's Sleigh Bell Serenade as explicit lol, maybe the line "every sleigh ride is a gay ride / You can sneak a hug `neath the old bear rug " set off a filter. Brook Benton's track & Glen Campbell's version of What Child Is This is pretty good too & so's Carolyn Kay & Grand Parees' A Christmas Halo. No thanks for the shuffle forcing me to remember Dominick the Donkey "hee haw, hee haww" though & Rag Mop isn't even a christmas/holiday song. )
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Morning Christmas (they like the song so much they put on 6 of their comps & named one after it. o/t - "Here Comes Santa Clause" indeed smh - artist isn't credited again but it sounds like cheaply dashed off copyright free muzak for shops. The Cascades Rhythm of the Rain IS NOT by Ella Fitzgerald or a Christmas song & it sounds like a bland rerecording/cover version too (wtf amazon) Hang on, Big City & Tammy aren't christmas songs either. wtf there's also a Christmas rewrite of She'll Be Coming Round The Mountain?!?).
Christmas on Her Mind (How did The Waitresses' Christmas Wrapping get on a bargain bin comp like this? wtf Edison Lighthouse doing a karaoke/soundalike but worse cover of Shaky? )
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Shazam! (Tammy still isn't a christmas song & neither's Shazam! + Gee Whizz It's Christmas doesn't sound remotely like George Formby.)
A Mom and Dad for Christmas (Is this a Christmas album or a romance novel? - the title track is some sappy glurgy nonsense about god answering prayers, set in a universe where you can walk into an orphanage and take a kid home (after guilt tripping your wife) just like you're buying a puppy as a present (don't do that). No More Blues is an unconnected blues instrumental that only seems to exist on similar comps & might not even be by Conway Twitty. Wine, Women and Song is a christmas song now, I don't make the rules. yay at discovering The Surfaris's A Surfer's Christmas List - their dream present is shaped like this
Tumblr media
Despite being a mix of tracks from The Beach Boys' Christmas Album & their never fully released 1977 Christmas album this comp doesn't include Morning Christmas. :-(
youtube
The Ventures are on it too - cool.)
Despite what amazon's search claims Morning Christmas isn't on Now's offical playlist NOW That's What I Call Christmas (or Greatest Indie Folk). Shame, but I'm still hoping one year it'll finally get deservedly recognised as a true soulful Christmas song & get on a notable comp & yearly airplay etc.

NOW SHIPPING FROM THE USA: SRW231 The Tourmaliners - Surfidia (Digipack CD). On “Surfidia”, The Tourmaliners blend the raw instrumental guitar sounds of Dick Dale, Link Wray, and The Ventures mixed with tiki vibrations and spy gyrations… all while watching a cool Spaghetti Western from outer space. Surfidia also features guest musicians Ron Blair of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Eddie Angel of Los Straitjackets and Bob Spalding of the Ventures. The album is a co-release between Sharawaji Records & Pacific Records. Produced by Miles Clowminzer (Johnny Tarr Quartet, Billy Nation), was recorded over a nine-month period in 2021-22 in San Diego, CA. The principal songwriters and arrangers are The Tourmaliner’s guitarist Deven Berryhill, bass player & guitarist Matt Clowminzer and Miles Clowminzer. The Tourmaliners drummer John MacElwee, guitarist Joe Dameron and keyboardist Ina Soliz perform their respective parts to round out the album. Miles also contributes various guitar, drum, keyboard and sound design elements throughout. The album cover is taken from a painting by punk rock artist and surfer Brian Bent. During the recording, the band would often derive inspiration from Brian’s painting to help create the album’s sonic landscape.
