My order for the second and third volumes of Wandering Son came in today, with those, I now have all 8 volumes of the series that were published into English by Fantagraphics before it went out of print.
Those two volumes are some of the hardest to find, I ordered them from a used book site and paid like $80 total for them. The rest of my volumes were all new when I bought them.
They're ex-library books from New Jersey, with the stickers and markings on them. I can remove the stickers easily, but I wish they didn't have the ink stamps, slight tears, stains, creased pages, etc.
I lost faith that Fantagraphics would ever reprint the missing volumes of Wandering Son or continue it a while back.
Tumblr media
It all stemmed from this email I sent to them back in 2018, where they effectively confirmed it was unlikely.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Currently, on their website, only the fifth to seventh volumes are still in stock, whether that's reprints or surplus I'm not sure.
According to the words of the translator, Wandering Son didn't sell that well for a number of reasons as stated in the article.
To add on to those points, I'll note that the series was published in English from 2011 to 2015, a bit before the big LGBTQ+ manga "boom" that has become very visible nowadays. While it may have been hard to justify the production costs in the early 2010s, I am for certain that if Wandering Son was given a second chance today, it would outperform.
Ironically, despite being out of print for several years now, Wandering Son was added to a list of banned books by the state of Texas two years ago. You could definitely advertise it with that distinction in hand.
Tumblr media
I find it convenient that the last time Fantagaphics tweeted about "Banned Books" in 2019, especially with how things have been going on in the past few years. Because if they tweeted about them today, they'd have to talk about Wandering Son, a series they've left out to die basically.
Tumblr media
That Shimura Takako's other works published into English, Sweet Blue Flowers and Even Though We're Adults, reference Wandering Son on the back of their covers, shows how the series has staying power despite its print status.
The fact that both are yuri titles that have thrived or are thriving, just shows how works about trans people are seen as "less marketable" compared to other LGBTQ+ stories, yet they'll still be exploited for profit to uphold those "more marketable" ones.
You can see this with the number of trans manga currently in the English market compared to yuri or especially BL titles.
I understand that Fantagraphics went through some hard times in the 2010s, but at this point, if they're not going to do anything with Wandering Son, I'd rather they give up the license to someone who actually will.
That's a lot of salt, but to tie it back, I'm really glad to own the 8 volumes of this series in hardcover.

Wandering Son - 2002
Where do i start?
Tumblr media
Takako Shimura’s 'Wandering Son' is beautiful manga that tackles growing up as a trans kid. The story follows Shuichi Nitori as he goes through life and experiences various feeling of gender dysphoria. As someone who is somewhat transgender, this manga hit incredibly close to home, and if you are trans yourself i cannot recommend this manga more. I'll nudge you to check the manga out before reading this review, as it will have some spoilers. You can read it free on mangadex.
Now, without further adieu, let’s get into what makes this manga so good.
First, I want to compliment Takako Shimura’s artstyle. Scenes often have no background, and if they do, it’s very simplistic. This places more focus on the characters, which of course are the main driving force of manga such as this. I also love the watercolor covers for each volume; their design expands on the cozy vibe of the manga.
Speaking of the vibe, 'Wandering Son' beautifully depicts how it feels to be a young trans person. Although it may be a bit rose-tinted, it’s still outstanding for being written by a cis woman. Shuichi is often depicted pondering his gender identity at night and we see him become slowly more dysphoric as he matures.
Tumblr media
Of course Shuichi is not the only lead. Yoshino Takatsuki takes the role of a deuteragonist early on, and is unfortunately slightly phased out of the spotlight later on. She is the transmasc to Shuichi’s transfem, but unlike Shuichi, she doesn't remain trans for the entire story. This kind of feels like a copout, because she outwardly presents masculine for years and even wishes she had a penis at one point, but I'm not going to pretend like that never happens to people. Gender identity can shift over time and it’s important to have a depction of that.
Tumblr media
Now, despite the praise I've given this manga, it definitely has flaws.
In chapter 12, Takatsuki gets sexually assaulted by an adult, which is very out of place and sudden in a manga like this. This never gets adressed again and the character who assaulted her never has any consequences.
Shuichi’s partner, Anna, ends up very underutilized in the grand scheme of things, which is sad, as i think her character is one of the most interesting ones in the manga. Despite that, her indifference to Shuichi’s transness is what leads to one of the most impactful panels (at least to me) in the last chapter.
Tumblr media
This panel hits you like a brick by the end. The last chapter focuses on Shuichi detailing his experience throughout the manga through his eyes. We are shown the good and bad, everything that has happened to him so far. And right at the end, we see him finally come out as transgender to Anna. Her reaction is of pure acceptance, all she asks him is “Does that mean I'll be a lesbian?” showing that no matter what, she still loves him.
'Wandering Son' has become one of my all-time favourite manga since i’ve read it and it’s a huge shame that Takako Shimura’s work is severely underrated. Regardless of it’s flaws, i think it’s one of the best manga depictions of transgender themes i’ve read. If you still haven’t read it (despite my suggestion in the opening) i genuinely think you should at least give it a try.
And with that, my first review comes to a close. Hope you liked reading it! The next one will be up at some point, i’m planning on doing one of evangelion but if you have suggestions, submit them! I'll at least try to look over any suggestions.

I think if there was ever a cartoonist I would do *literally anything* to meet it would be Takako Shimura. The way she writes such beautifully complex and conflicted queer characters, the way her art is so delicate and expressive yet simple...I struggle to think of a cartoonist who I love more. I'd probably break down crying if I met her though 😅

Loving this series as adult yuri romance, seeing them deal with the tangle of past and present relationships, complicated families, and the way other people see them at the same time as they try to figure out how they feel about each other and what that means for them. Really recommend this if you want something sweet and grown-up at the same time.

Hey! I was just reminded, since you like "KI NI NATTERU HITO GA OTOKO JANAKATTA", i have a very good Yuri title with girls in their 30s called "Otona ni Natte mo" (Even though we're adults) by SHIMURA Takako to recommend. It's not all out in English yet but we have 5 or 6 volumes out! The story is quite good, I think you'd like it! :D Have fun and have a good week ahead!
Tumblr media
Oh, yes—isn’t Shimura also the mangaka behind Sweet Blue Flowers? I haven’t read either work (yet), but the majority of opinions I’ve seen have been positive. Heaven knows I’m desperate for quality yuri that venture beyond the schoolyard to delve into the messy complexities of sapphic women’s relationships, so I’ll consider checking it out at some point!
Hope you have a good week, as well, and thank you for the recommendation! ☺️
