I invite you to watch the episode again.
Tumblr media
The latest episode of The Bad Batch, "Retrieval", once again did not tick off the boxes for everyone. But whenever you see one of those episodes you like to call a filler, I invite you to watch it at least one more time. Sometimes, the purpose of the episode is subtle.
Last week's episode showed us a somewhat aimless Batch fresh from losing Echo as he left to help his endangered clone brothers and others who are suffering under the Empire's thumb. Today's episode served to show that there is oppression and injustice everywhere, even in places like that ipsium mine where there is no Imperial presence. Poverty, hunger, exploitation, and greed were all present. And there wasn't an Imperial in sight.
This episode might just be the Batch's wake up call. This exchange between Hunter and Tech sums it up pretty well: Hunter: "We're not engaging. The situation for these kids is bad enough." Tech: "Mokko appears to be using his power and means as leverage over his workers. It is a similar tactic used by the Empire. Although, this operation is on a smaller scale." By the end of the episode, they do engage, realizing that they can't stand idly by while people suffer, the same conclusion Echo came to. Echo has left to fight for those being oppressed by the Empire. The enhanced clone family he left behind is fighting to defend everyone else.
Echo said, "There are others out there who need our help." He's right, and today's episode showed the Batch just how right he was. "Retrieval" wasn't just referring to the Batch getting back their ship. They were also getting back their purpose.

The ‘Mom & Dad’ dynamic of Echo and Hunter was so understated but incredible. We don’t get to see how it formed in full, we just get the idea that of all of the Batch, it was Echo who gelled with Hunter best when it came to leading. He knew how to convince Hunter with more than just basic facts like Tech might; he wasn’t willing to be swayed by emotion like Wrecker might; he was willing to compromise or accept a no when Crosshair wasn’t. And it’s the lack of this which is plainly shaking up the team: suddenly, this highly stabilizing dynamic is gone, leaving Hunter back to trying to balance Wrecker and Tech--no mean feat as they’re on decided opposing ends of a broad spectrum of behavior--and keep an eye on Omega alone, for the first time in a long while.
I don’t know that we need an episode focusing on this, as Hunter got so much of S1, but a few bits here and there would be nice. A couple exchanges about what it does to him to not have Echo around. That might make for a cool conversation between him and, say, Rex. <cough> <cough>

MY THOUGHTS ON TBB 2×10 "Retrieval"
This review is going to be less detailed on than usual, I'm quite busy, and I don't have time for more (I already skipped last episode's, oops!)
Anyway, this episode is not in the top list, but I liked it a lot. So, here it is my opinion about it
Let me start with Wrecker. Is it too much to ask to give a little break to my boy? I mean, he has spent the entire season forced to be in high places/hanging off thing, despite his fear of heights; last week he also was stomped on by the stampede, and that's without mentioning, being shot at as usual. He deserves a break! Altho, all his growling and intimidation tactics. His "We don't miss" it was just *chef's kiss*
Gonky! Gonky was amazing in this episode. I'm happy that he had his moment to shine, since we've seen him so little this season.
Ugh! I just hated Mokko and how he exploited the miners. Horrific how he starved them and made them compete for food, while he ate whatever he wanted. Glad that he died. Should have suffered more tho. And unfortunately, there are too many people like him in real life.
And I got so many feels about how much trust Omega had that Hunter would catch her 🥺🥺💛💛💙💙
I adored that Tech and Omega's bond is growing even more. That's been fantastic this season. I love that he was impressed, but not all surprised, when she came up with tracking Gonky as a way to find the Marauder. It's not the first time she finds a creative solution to their current problem. And the last scene together is so great!!! It reinforced something I've been thinking.
There's this theme this season about living and finding a purpose under the Empire's rule, and they're showing us that with 3 storylines, each from a different POV. So, we have the selfish approach with Crosshair and his stubbornness to remain faithful to the Empire. Then at the other extreme, we have Rex (and now, Echo too) with a selfless at larger scale approach, which is very important because the Empire should go uncontested (even if we know it's a doom endeavor for a few decades). But that's not the only selfless approach there is. We have the Batch who likes to focus more in the smaller scale, and that's important too.
If anything the Andor series (also Rebels in the beginning) was great in was in showing that the smaller, more focused scruffs also helps the larger fight eventually. At the end, not everybody turned into a rebel, and they don't have to. The batch's desire to stay away from the Empire and danger (even if they're very bad at it) is understandable. And I compare it to the Jedi during the Clone Wars, that as they worried more and more about commanding the army and focusing on the larger scale and greater good, they were forced to neglect the normal people and their problems. And people started to resent them for it. Of course, all that was by design! I know it was Palpatine's plan all along, but I think it's interesting the parallel.
Why can't Rex and Echo fight the big fight as they want, and the Batch stay on more on personal stakes in their battles. That's valid. Or that's how I think. I know some people will agree with me, others will not. And that's valid too.
Anyway... Next week is Metamorphosis, and I still believe (as I did in my initial prediction) that this is the one we could see the cloned zilo beast. I guess i have to wait and see

ok Thoughts™ on the last seven episodes of the bad batch because I procrastinated a lot lol
Entombed:
not much I can remember since I did watch three episodes one after another but I did almost cry when Mel "died",
felt like the weakest episode so far tbh
Tribe:
literally sobbed from as soon as Gungi appeared until the end credits rolled,
was prepared to send Filoni my therapy bills
The Clone Conspiracy:
god I love Riyo,
my boy?!?!!! my rexy?!?!!
tbh it took me like three weeks to find time to watch the next four episodes so I don't really remember what happened in the first three but yera lol
Truth and Consequences:
everyone but Megs skipping stairs on their way off the Marauder 😂,
Echo momming omega 🥹,
Echo wants to help the rebellion so much,
I'm literally so scared for omega in the Senate, I feel like she's gonna die or something,
oh fuck oh fuck rampart
ok he didn't notice her I think
also he has one hell of a chin
bail is out here nick furying
BURTONI????? THAT BITCH I ONLY KNOW FROM FICS????
burtoni is gonna fuck them over I'm calling it
I know what happens with echo bc I accidentally stumbled across spoilers but I can see the exact moment he decided to help rex
"he's still not better with heights?" "this is him better" 😂
that's one way to get on a venator
they're just stealing a whole ass venator at this point
idk what Rex was thinking asking for tbb to help on a stealth mission, these fuckers are less stealthy than fucking Skywalker
riyos a badass
oh rampart you're fucked
and it was all for nothing, great 😒
low-key bawling at how omega had no clue what was going on
The Crossing:
omegas sarky this episode, I like it lol
damn that was almost a lion king moment
megs needs a helmet fr tho
omega has attachment issues
tech and emotions don't really get along lol
I'm slowly becoming more and more of a tech girlie by the episode
so tech is definitely autistic
the cave is kinda really pretty tbh
this planet reminds me of the gerudo desert from botw
Retrieval:
who knew Gonky would eventually be useful
this benni is pissing me off ngl
not the marauder
how dare you call Gonky a defective power droid you shit plant
the Mando adoption gene is gonna flare and they're gonna adopt Benni I swear
mokko got what he deserved
Metamorphosis:
idk who this boy is but he is becoming a blorbo very quic-- oh nvm he's dead
damn the greenery around that base is stunning tho
wtf is going on????? this feels like a Halloween episode so far
NALA SE?!!?!!!!
dr hemlocks kinda a dick
her concern is warranted, tech, because something massacred the crew on this ship ffs
this feels like the brain worms arc
I'm probably wrong but is that a baby zillo beast?????????? I haven't watched that arc in ages but it kinda looks like one
ok I googled what the zillo beast looked like and I swear to GOD THATS A FUCKIGN ZILLO BEAST
it's fucking eating electricity
omg it gets bigger everytime it eats electricity
OMG I WAS RIGHT!!!!!! it is a zillo beast
awww tech protecting megs 🥲
I simultaneously can't believe the empire decided to clone the zillo beast but also can't believe they waited so long to clone it
we all know palps was eyeing the mofo from the beginning
yeah no shit palps made the order before he was emperor, he was the one who ordered it to be brought to coruscant in the first place
and our boys are gonna be revealed to be alive
tbh how they didn't know with tech's whole racing shebang is beyond me
omg and they're going after omega again 😒
also I'm sick rn so this might make no sense but too bad

Thoughts on TBB 3x10: Identity Crisis and 3x11: Point of No Return
SPOILERS BELOW
Let's not start kidnapping kids for experimentation. That's never going to go well
This show has progressively gotten greyer and it's so depressing. I want my sunshine back
Of course the Empire are experimenting on kids. "Oh we cAn'T fiNd EnOugH aDulTs. We juSt uSe cHilDrEn iNsteAd". 🖕
Ayyyyy Bane is back!
Well he didn't kill the parent so that's something
This is so depressing 😭
"I was following protocol". Everything that comes close to "good soldiers follow orders" makes me really sad
Have we met someone else called Jax? I swear we've heard that name before
The fact that they have 3 specimens but their specimen numbers are much higher than 3 does not make me feel good. What happened to all of the other ones???
"To retrieve it". "It". Literally just an object to Dr Arsehole over here
Trandoshan? Pirate? FUCK YOU CID FOR SPILLING ABOUT PHEE
"Let's just say I'm good at my job" suggests he has picked up a hell of a lot more than 3 kids so where are the others?!
NOT THE LULA DOLL
I feel like this is a good time to note that I still don't like Emerie. Her dedication to Hemlock and her involvement in the Empire up until this point outweigh all of her current actions for me. So no, I still don't like her.
"But what about Nala Se?" I hear you ask. Don't like her either! I respect that she's trying to protect Omega but the number of problems that lanky bitch has caused means that I'm not going to forgive her that easily
People really need to stop leaving the door to their ship open BECAUSE SHIT LIKE THIS HAPPENS
1600??? FOR FUEL?! BITCH THEY TRIED SELLING ECHO FOR 2000
Tbf with fuel prices the way that they are I shouldn't be surprised
NOOOOO NOT PABU 😭
DON'T LEAVE THE GOGGLES THERE
AND LULA TOO?!
AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
FUCK THAT'S NOT GOOD
Oof that little bit of Omega's theme really hits in the feels 🥲
Eliminate them? How about no
NOT THE MARAUDER
I KNOW IT WAS IN A TEASER CLIP BUT NOOOOOOOOO
You know what I'm suddenly very glad that the goggles and Lula were off the ship
Nah I don't like that Wrecker's down. He never goes down for long
"Search every domicile" Domicile? DOMICILE?! Now where have we heard someone use that term before...
The Kiners are really popping off with this soundtrack 🔥
Crosshair's little "uh huh" 😭
SOMEONE CALL ECHO FFS
How about no to the recapture plan
If CX-2 turns out to be Tech then we only have 4 episodes left to address that entire storyline and I don't know what to do with that information
Errrrrr Hunter's not gonna be happy when he finds out what Crosshair and Omega have been up to
Neither's Wrecker tbf
Or Echo
Anyway... Cross is going to have a fun time explaining that one
Echo's gonna get a fun call as well. "So errr... The Empire took over Pabu, Omega got herself recaptured by choice and the Marauder is in pieces so... can we get a lift please?"
FUCK CROSSHAIR MISSED THE TRACKER
Me after these episodes
Tumblr media
Some solid episodes today. I really enjoyed them! Am I still annoyed that Echo is still stuck as someone to be name dropped but not actually put in the episode? Yes. But these were some strong episodes.
I'm still trying to compute how this is all going to get wrapped up in 4 episodes though. That's really not a lot of time. 😭
BINGO UPDATE
Tumblr media
Only just clocked that I have "Batcher dies" written on it. When I wrote it I meant one of the Batch members. I didn't know we were gonna get a hound called Batcher 😅

TBB s2e13 Review & Discussion - Pabu, A Tropical Getaway
Per Usual, Massive Spoilers Ahead!
Today’s episode was truly lovely. It was a nice break from the heartache that has been the last two episodes. I absolutely adored seeing Omega be a kid for once and have a friend her age. I also loved seeing the Batch just truly relax for once. The tsunami was genuinely scary to me. I never enjoy having to watch a natural disaster in a show simply because of how real an issue it is. It was unsettling to say the least. This episode also set up the possibilities for TBB to have a place to restart their lives and live peacefully, which is a good thing to keep in mind. That being said, I don’t think they are going to do that just yet, there is still cause for them to join the fight (SAVE YOUR BROTHER DAMMIT!)
Cid. Oh Cid. How the mighty have fallen. I used to enjoy her character as this dry and witty “auntie”. But as we have all come to realize, she is quite cruel and uncaring. This is not to say she is a bad character, because frankly she is written so well. But I’m just happy the Batch finally cut ties with her and are going on their own. I will say, though, that I am a bit surprised at how sudden it happened. She is totally going to sell them out to the Empire.
Alright, I’m going to address the elephant in the room. This fandom, while it has its good sides and I love that, needs to chill tf out. There is literally no reason to be going feral over fictional characters like this. it’s not that big of a deal. Everyone is allowed to have their interpretations, their ships and their likes/dislikes without warranting aggression from one another. You're allowed to be upset by today's episode as much as you're allowed to be happy with it. So please, let us remember that the point of a fandom is to bring people together, not push them apart.
Anyways. With that being said, here are my thoughts on Tech and Phee. On the lowest of keys, I’m ever so slightly vibing. Initially (as in her first two appearances, earlier in the season) I was put off by her character because I thought “oh, here is yet another pirate…”  I had not been fond of the idea of her being a love interest to Tech simply because I could not gauge her character well enough at the time and therefore did not want to jump aboard the ship. This episode was fantastic in developing her character. I still don’t feel particularly inclined to jump aboard this ship, at least, not yet. However, because this episode gave Phee agency, morality, and drive, (which I seriously appreciated and I love that for her), I can now gauge her character far better and can understand how she and Tech could maybe be a thing in the future if that’s the direction the writers choose to go in. In my personal opinion, I doubt the writers will pursue this sub-plot and if they do, it won't be on a grand scale, considering the focus of the main story. And if I'm being honest, I'm not exactly sold on the idea of there being romance in TBB; that's just me though. But back to Phee, the fact that she is going out of her way to retrieve artifacts important to Pabu’s culture (even if they have no monetary value) just shows the viewers that she is more than just some pirate and that she values things that go beyond money. We live laugh love character development in this battalion.
7.5/10. Great episode, cozy vibes all the way.
