I've been thinking about of the double standard in this fandom and it's so aggravating sometimes.

This post started because I was thinking Rhaenyra and house of the dragon (the tv show) so I'll talk about her and that show first, with the videos calling her "the mad queen" for *checking note* turning around and looking mad at the camera because her son is dead while we never hear the same thing when Aemond ask his nephew to give his own eye out and then chase him with a gigantic dragon through a storm. Or Crispin bashing the head of someone at a Banquet because he was mad...

I feel like the most obvious one is Dany but this is a problem of GOT portraying Dany as "the mad queen" and the fandom applying it to the books when someone else very obviously have parallels and foreshadowing for it and it's not Dany (hint: it's start with a C and end with Ersei) and it really bother me especially considering people like Tywin Lannister who sacked King's Landing, ordered the murder of children, plotted the red wedding, destroyed two entire houses or the Boltons who were also part of the red wedding AND are known to flay people alive or even the Freys (who while not liked by the fandom are not called mad either) also part of the red wedding as a response to an offence that was repaid with the wedding of Edmure or the Mountain who has done more horrific things than anyone else and they are also never being called "mad" for that.

And then we get to Arya being too far gone and leaving on a boat out of society because she is being trained as an assassin (as if her part of her storyline was not about her finding a place in society as a gender-non conforming girl and not being able to lose her identity as Arya Stark through everything ), when there are men like Jaime or Sandor Clegane (or even Theon) who have killed children (or tried to for Jaime) and lost theirs identity to some extent and still seen as sympathetic and there no doubts in the fandom's mind that they are not too far gone and have a chance to come back from the horrors they"ve done.

Which leads me to Catelyn and Lady Stoneheart. While I do agree that she might be different as Lady Stoneheart (being killed in an horrifying manner after watching her oldest dies also in a horrifying way would do that to you), this is not really criticism and more of an open-ended thing that's been going through my mind. If we compare the theories on Lady Stoneheart and Jon post resurrection, both of them being more vengeful seems to be the main theory but only Cat is getting killed again by Arya because "she is too far gone in her vengeance". Part of it is actual foreshadowing that could be there (not sure if I believe it but I think the hints could point to it) but part of it feels like it's not.

Saw the news about RTX/RT and I get the gist of their financial situation. Just wanted to say that even if the show has to be cut off for good before anything besides V9 gets released, I'll still be reloading this blog.

It may sound silly to many that some grown dumbass (me) out there would waste a few hours every month or so on something that belongs in an archive after the show dies. But NND is a very special ship to me and I'd like it to continue existing, in a way.

thanks!! idk if im deserving of applause tho. it's an inherent part of why i like to write so much, when im writing it's the only moments im truly alone with myself and forced to untangle my thoughts and feelings, which doesnt happen often to be and its a good thing i get to do this, otherwise theyd just fester trapped with no way to voice them. it's actually quite cathartic too, especially when you stumble upon just the right wording after days of struggles

hi! Is it too late to say why and how your writing is special? Because, uh, I LOVE IT SO MUCH. You’re my favorite spn writer. A few others come very close, but you take first place easy. Your fics are consistently delightful. It’s like at the end of each sentence I’m _feeling_ something, and feeling it strongly, something I dont know how to describe. It’s more than angst (I really like angst).

In 2 or 3 sentences, you’ve made me feel like Sam or Dean, you’ve given me an outlook on the whole situation (and it usually hits like a ton of bricks). Seeing you posted a story (like just now) really brightens my day.

To go on a quick tengent about how special your writing is : you have reignited my age-old dream of being a writer myself. I wish I could paint a picture/an emotion as well as you, write reactions and feelings that feel so realistic to the reader. (Simultaneously, I despair of ever being able to use words so beautifully and efficiently, so I keep putting it off).

Anyway, I’m so thankful to have become an spn fan at a moment where I can enjoy your stories!! Thank you so much for sharing your work. All the best ❤️

sorry this took me a while to reply, it was overwhelmingly sweet, haha. I'm glad you like my writing, it always makes me so happy when people describe it as efficient or economical (the 2-3 sentences thing). and it makes me even happier to hear that you want to write!!

you can do it, and you should, if it's something you want to do!! nobody's BORN good at anything, it's all practice. obviously everyone knows that, but I think we forget when it comes to art, like starting and getting better is insurmountable. I've been writing my whole life, and for most of that, I sucked. even if we're just talking about fic, my work got zero play and negative reviews constantly! because I wasn't good! which is fine!! and then I just kept writing, and reading (so important-- real books, not just fic) and learned more about what I want to read and thus what I want to write, and I found a style out of that.

you just gotta start doing it, and it's never too late. everyone is learning forever. my husband makes fun of me for having a bad vocabulary and not knowing the definitions of super simple words (it's true) and I'm constantly editing and re-editing my work because I lean on the same few turns of phrase and the same lazy verbs. it's all just practice. anyway thank you and ganbatte

Also thinking about the non existent halachot on plural systems being Jewish. Even ones like us where we were born and raised Jewish. But most people here have culture and religion that doesn't even come from a people on this earth or if the do one from an ancient culture. To singlets everyone is Jewish but to each other no we're not. It feels wrong to always be doing tasks meant for Jewish people if someone not Jewish is fronting. But according to any tengental halachka it doesn't matter also. But they mostly account only for the body and the single mind that's supposed to be in there

Mainly I'm just like.. would people be mad at me if they found out. Would HaShem be mad. We're agnostic at least amount of 'faith" but still.

If there's precedent in our own scriptures and important texts i can't think of anything

Notes from the other side of a phd defense.

I feel like I’ve been run over by a truck. Everything hurts.

As far as the defense goes, it went as well as could realistically be expected: ‘Congratulations, great effort, we look forward to hearing more!’

The night before...is best forgotten. I literally wondered ‘what and how much did I take last night?’ once I came out of the defense around noon and sank onto the nearest chair in the kitchen. A truly gruelling process.

What perplexed and utterly frustrated me is that apparently when you put five world-class scholars in a room with a phd candidate to rip her dissertation offering apart, they all spin off in a different tengent and you get a slightly panicky feeling of having to satisfy ALL of them in your final version. Woe betide me that I managed to stumble upon the documents that I have in the archives and opened a massive can of worms. Yes, Prof.K, I’m very much aware that there’s a great potential here for taking a shot at the material turn, but kindly direct me to resources that can explain to us all what the numerous terms I’ve decoded in these documents actually mean? Like, do they understand how many dead-ends I’ve hit in the past few years with this? Prof.N., I understand you were pressed for time and none too happy about being part of this jury at that date and hour, but you could be a little less scatching in your comments, couldn’t you? He sounded annoyed throughout!

And Prof.T, yes yes I understand you really want to see a nice, spinning theoretical discussion as I try to make a gateway in court studies for our field, but who was it again that warned me not to go down the comparative route? Oh, it was Prof. A. Basically, they all felt that most of the stuff I had already worked on but Prof.A. had ultimately suggested I leave out completely for a better focus *should* be there in the dissertation. Not that I blame Prof.A., she’s been nothing short of wonderfully supportive throughout this entire process. But I am so.. frustrated. Really, really frustrated.

(I don’t write my academic stuff with the same incredible eloquence that I do here on Tumblr - just felt the need to point that out... :D)

Anyway. I’m glad it’s done. More work now to give it all a better shape, at least for a few more months. I’m meeting Prof.A. tomorrow to go over it all, and then must deal with the bureaucratic mess of it all.

I’m exhausted, frustrated... but also relieved. I know -and the jury knows- what I have is quite massive. It’s just taking a lot of time to make it shine. It’ll be worth it all, inshallah.

3: What’s your favorite line of narration? The multi ghoul loved the taste of blood, and Dewdrop was especially delicious. The other smelled of arousal and iron, like a short circuit, like electric smoke and hot metal and life energy and sweat. It thrilled Swiss to no end, saturated his brain. Describing tastes and smells, especially of things I have a very deep love for like blood, is one of my favorite things to write. I want to create an image in my reader's mind, put the taste on their tongues, the scents in their noses, like I can smell and taste it myself when I write.

4: What’s your favorite line of dialogue? “Yeah, no,” he clicked his tongue. “Anyone else maybe.” The back and forth between Swiss and Dew. The banter. Swiss' little lies and twisting the truth and manipulation, Dew's knowledge of how he's in trouble already the second Swiss arrives because there's no way the multi showed up to help him for real. I can't get enough of these two talking!

10: Why did you choose this pairing for this particular story? It echoes a previous response for question 10 for Drought, a couple asks back, but: Swiss is my go-to sadist, I heavily headcanon him with a blood and knife kink (which I will absolutely write more of someday). And Dew's the one that cut himself and bled so sexily over his guitar so it had to be him. If there's blood somewhere, good chance Swiss will come running. Man can't resist it. #relatable (maybe only for me and people with a blood kink tho XD )

11: What do you like best about this fic? How I wrote it. I felt possessed XD I wrote the whole thing and got it posted in less than two days. Now, I write all the time, at work, I write for a music magazine, like, writing it my thing, but writing a fanfic? I hadn't done that in about a year at that point. And I don't post my erotica and/or fanfics online usually. I write for people or commissions or friends or just for myself most of the time. But I was way too scared to post fanfics on archive sites. Bad experiences in the past with fandoms and all that. I dunno why I HAD to write Surface Tension and HAD to post it, physically it was a need. I just, had to. I wrote it and posted it in a weird fever dream-like state where, honestly, if I had thought 5 minutes about it, I would have psyched myself out and I wouldn't have posted it. But I couldn't. I just had to do it. Then sit with that knowledge. That one fic lead me to join the Ghost fandom and meet all of you wonderful people and feel so seen and valued. And able to help support and encourage artists that have come to mean so much to me in the past two months. It's NUTS I wrote this and posted it. But clearly that's the tengent my life needed to take at that moment in time and I regret nothing. What I like the most about Surface is how it started my journey here.

So, about Ruby's semblance when it comes to Penny, there's something interesting, if you'd allow me to go on a tengent ^^ (V3-7-8 spoilers ahead)

To answer you first, yes! Ruby did attempt to use her semblance on Penny in V2C3. However, it's shown that Penny was way too heavy for her (mechanical body) and they both fell on the road (after which Penny rescues Ruby from a truck). It's interesting because it means at that time Ruby's semblance DID take mass in account, unlike what Penny explains in V8C3.

Ruby couldn't protect Penny this one time, because of the mass. Post-timeskip she's seen carrying Nora in early V4. We can assume the V8C3 explanation of breaking down people to their molecular components started taking effect then. Her semblance evolved to counter this one weak point.

But her semblance also evolved to counter another thing she couldn't do for Penny. In V3C9, a weaponless Ruby tries to force her way through the hallway, only for Mercury to kick her right off. She was effectively trying to use Petal burst to bypass him, and failed. Unfortunately, she could not reach Penny in time, only finding her in pieces on the ground. Interestingly, V7 onwards showcase Ruby being able to "go around" matter when in her Petal form, as if she were going through elements. Her semblance evolved again.

But you know this blog's name, and I have to point out who's the catalyst of this semblance change both times haha. Something something being scarred by losing Penny so hard during The Fall your trauma shapes your semblance to avoid the scenarios where she was in danger so you don't lose anyone else the same way, ever again.
