There's a very long list of nuanced things I LOVE about Chortegas as a lesbian, but one that I've been fixating on as of late is the fact that it's Christine that has been established to have a long list of sexcapades, not Erica.

A trope we see all too often is that in any sapphic ship, the more masculine half of the ship is portrayed both in original works and fan works as being somehow manipulative, more experienced, or "tricking" her more feminine partner into the relationship. Lesbians are treated more harshly both inside & outside of the community than their peers, and this discrepancy is amplified for butches, mascs, & studs. Their portrayal in media is still overwhelmingly negative, so the fact that Erica's character avoids this is incredible, especially as these tropes she's avoiding are more prevalent when one half of the ship is a woman of color. When a ship involves a person of color, people seem to LOVE adding in the corruption trope, but the fact that Christine is explicitly experienced means we can't lean on that.

I am SURE people have talked about how portraying the attractive blonde white woman as someone sleeps around is far from revolutionary, but establishing that, and then establishing the person she's closest is Erica IS revolutionary.

In a single conversation, Spock Amok made it clear(after subtly showing that they're close in the pilot and Children of the Comet) that they're FRIENDS, and that Christine knows her way around sexual relationships. In ONE episode, Strange New Worlds made it so that portraying Erica as the manipulative one or Christine as having a lack of agency in the relationship or practical experience immediately shows a lack of understanding or care for the characters.

As much as I want this ship to eventually be canon, the care the writers and directors took in establishing their friendship the way they did is already so much more than queer women, masculine women, and especially queer making women ever get

I just rewatched The Marvels for the fifth time.
