Well, I think we all knew this would happen eventually but it still doesn't make this day any less tragic. It pains me to report, friends, but this morning at 0600 hours Lieutenant Tom Paris saw Lieutenant Commander Tuvok (having both been summoned to the bridge via red alert) sans makeup and not only asked if he was tired but also exclaimed 'geezsh' the moment he saw his face. This is being treated as an international incident and Neelix will be giving updates as they arrive.

I'm glad you find them useful, and more importantly, that you find fics to add to your reading list. There are SO many wonderful content out there. I'm humbly trying to offer another way of finding and consuming the goodies. I've used so many recs lists for previous fandoms... So I'm more than happy to do it for the TG/M fandom (or like for the Hangster ship in particular...although I have plans to extend my work to several other ships as well).

Whatever works for you!! As long as you can find the stories easily, it's not important how you organise your library! :D (I'm going all in: open tabs, marked for later, word document, bookmarks, phone notes.... xD)

GOOD JESUS. No way. I don't have time to read all the recs before actually reccing them. No way, nope.... You know I still have some marked for later fics that were published at the very beginning of the Hangster fandom? And people keep creating content, so it's hard to keep track of my to-read sometimes.... (By that I mean, keep writing wonderful writers, KEEP WRITING! <3)

Now, I DO spend a lot of time finding and organising fics. Like A LOT of time...👀 I rarely read the fics for pleasure when I'm in 'reccing' mode. Instead, I'm using my super awesome research tricks in order to create a helpful (at least, I hope it is) repository of TG stories. (It's often way too elaborate the way I do it, but whatever, I have no chills whatsoever.)

Hypnotised - Years&Years the whole reason this playlist exists tbh. the ship imagery of course, 'surround me body and soul, pull me into your glow, make me blush' dare i say more. yes, i dare, 'unbound me (literal huh), spin me in gold. as the story unfolds in your touch'. the whole,, a boy who offers you life and takes you far away. mmh.

Tennessee Whiskey - Chris Stapleton so huh, alcohol imagery with a deep rough voice, right ? a strong feeling of zoro's chaotic cowboy-ish pseudo pirate hunter life before meeting luffy and how he would reflect on his life now. 'but when you poured out your heart i didn't waste it, cause there's nothing like your love to get me high' so sweet

Thank You - Bonnie Raitt i've always loved this song since i found it, it's so gentle. 'you came into my life, always like you knew, that time was runnin' out, oh i came runnin' home to you' // 'yeah i'm afraid they'll come and take away this precious dream of you' - speaks sm about trusting your love (i use love for partner/lover/whatever they are to each other thank u), fearing that death can take them from you, but still being thankful you met & shared this life in the first place.

Neptune - Sufjan Stevens (& others) (its long sorry) my apologies for i am queer and sad a lot, and this is very much about some type of religious comparison, it's bittersweet, but. it brings a feeling of peace, of : i need your love, no matter the shape, as long as it is there. 'so if you won't hold me, i have no objections. so if you won't please me, i make no commands. so if you don't trust me, it's best if i drown.' mmh. feeling me on this ? yes ? thank you

Beyond - Daft Punk this music, the drums and intro, reminds me so much of the anime's big brass focused & happy soundtrack, but it turns into a song about love. how pretty is that ? so pretty. 'it speaks of places never seen, your home's a promise long forgotten, it is the birthplace of your dreams.' i see this song as really the 'beyond love, come alive' of their relationship and how they exist together with the crew, on the ship, in their adventures. it's an understanding, a promise, a dream.

Sometimes I Cry - Chris Stapleton i'm such a fan of this man how is his voice so full of deep emotions, he sings through my soul. this is very much the separation in different islands arc for me, it reeks of loneliness and the more it goes on you can feel the mask of being strong slipping into accepting fully the misery. lovely.

C'mon Baby, Cry - Orville Peck yeah, lots of cowboys, i know. but this one's Different. i love the cheerfullness of it, i feel like it's really about two boys who get each other and one of them wants to help this time. this is more luffy's side of the cowboyness of this playlist in my head, but it cld be either way. the 'i got an hour or so' bit always makes me laugh, it's kind of funny like 'i love you, show me your pain, i'll nurse for a while, then we move.'

Sunlight - Hozier huh stole this one from someone who recced it on tumblr dot com thank you friend you're so real for this choice. there's smthg abt the choir that just gives you that extreme intense feeling of rising above or fighting. the sun metaphor this playlist lacked, from light to flames to pain to death to falling into the sea. ah, beautiful.

This Feeling - Alabama Shakes might as well come out and say this but softly strung guitars are a very zoro&luffy's sound to me, a quiet texture that flows so smoothly you know. i see this song as kind of a look into luffy's heart, of being afraid of being left alone, or having spent a long time alone. it feels simple, going from a hard time to a good time to a fun time, like someone full of trust&love for life wrote this i can feel it. and it's very protective too, you shouldn't take this feeling from him, it's his. his happiness and (to me, in this pl) the quiet understanding of his feelings for his first mate.

Can't Stop - Red Hot Chili Peppers happy bright sonnng i didn't lie. 'this punk, the feelin' that you stay for. in time, i want to be your best friend' // 'the world i love, the tears i drop, to be part of the wave, can't stop.' lalala i love this song it's so huge and fast paced, it gives me luffy-brain with zoro running behind and living through the entire world

Fragments of Time - Daft Punk ft Todd Edwards such a cosy nostalgic feeling 'our only plan is to improvise, and its crystal clear that i don't ever want it to end.', such a kind adventure driven song about loving every day and the memories you make with pple you love

@derelictship tagged me to post my top 9 films watched in 2023. It didn’t specify “for the first time,” but I went with that despite how large a couple of my rewatches (watched first in 2022) loomed over this year as well…

To Be or Not to Be (1942) - Absolutely adore this film. I actually forgot that I watched it last year because it’s really and truly climbed inside my brain and it feels like I’ve known it forever. It’s the film that made me start paying attention to Ernst Lubitsch as a director when I had the realization of “WAIT a second - isn’t that also the Trouble in Paradise guy????” - so I owe it everything for that alone. I rewatched it a bunch of times and showed it to four people, to pretty positive reviews! My cousin even unexpectedly requested that we watch it AGAIN so my other cousin can see it! My second favorite of the year.

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) - Only watched this once, but I loved it immediately and am itching to rewatch. Will be seeing it in a proper theater in February and bringing my mom along, so hopefully she likes it as much as I do!

Arsenic and Old Lace (1944) - I watched this one on my birthday while tipsy from wine and it was one of the best experiences of my life. The first film I really enjoyed Cary Grant in, which made me very happy because I WANTED to like him, but I just kept hating the roles I was seeing him in for various reasons. I’ve liked everything I’ve seen of him since, though, so all is well now!

A Night at the Opera (1935) - Another one I am itching to rewatch because I enjoyed it so much the first time. I want to show it to my family, but I feel like it’s most effective if you’re already familiar with the Marx Brothers, which my family is not, so I’m figuring out how best to facilitate that.

The Third Man (1949) - THE film of the year for me. I loved it so much the first time, that I didn’t believe it could possibly have been that good and had to rewatch it to confirm that yes, it really is. I’ve rewatched it several more times since (including once with my family, who enjoyed it), and I watch the whole thing with a smile on my face because it just makes me so, so happy.

The Seventh Seal (1957) - Decided to finally watch this one while grievously ill (VERY mild cold, but my first since 2018) without knowing what it was about, which was a TRIP and it Got Me, so here we are. I’ve told James this already, but it was a conversation with my coworkers involving this film that led to the infamous tragedy/catharsis post. I’m also gonna be seeing this one Big in a theater this year!

12 Angry Men (1957) - If I recall correctly, I watched this one during the same illness and really enjoyed it. Yet another I am excited to rewatch sometime this year!

How to Steal a Million (1966) - I forget who recommended this one to me, but thank you! It was highly enjoyable and went directly onto my “favorites” list!

The Smiling Lieutenant (1931) - Snuck in at the VERY end of the year! I had actually put it on my schedule for this year, but I got impatient and watched it early, so it counts for 2023. Yet another film where I had absolutely no idea what was happening or going to happen, and became more and more delighted as the film went on. Just procured a physical copy, so I’m going to be posting my favorite parts soon because you ALL need to see this and I will not rest until you do. Probably my third favorite after The Third Man and To Be or No to Be.

I watched around 60 new-to-me films in 2023, more than I have in any year EVER, and I plan to double that in 2024, so I’m excited to see what new gems I will “discover” for myself!

He had met people of much greater flamboyancy, too, possessed of much louder voices who baffled and amused him in much the same way. He had met talented artists and could carry a conversation on libretti as well as any musical layman, and had gotten much drunker, much faster with much more scrupulously tailored men.

And so he was not sure what it was, exactly, that surprised him. Or perhaps unsettled was the word.

Pel-Thenhior laughed at some joke of Min Vechin's, his head flung back on his neck, a show of earnest delight, and no, no—there was too much of kinship with Pel-Thenhior for Csevet to label the drifting feeling that had been with him all evening unsettlement. He recognized too much of Pel-Thenhior's manner, too much of the energy coming off of him for anything of that ilk. It was ever so difficult to be wary of a fellow marnis.

"Did you see that horrible little production of Seleno when it toured, the—"

"Oh!" cried Min Vechin, soft hands flying to cover her grinning mouth. "Oh no, yes, yes, with the—"

"The horse!" Their voices played a riotous counterpoint, both of them practically shouting before dissolving into rib-cracking laughter.

Were this a properly formal occasion, rather than a post-performance soirée in the more private of the Court's gardens, Csevet would have left them to it. It helped also that he was slightly soused.

"Was that the one with the tremendous wigs?" Csevet asked, with a gesture meant to encompass girth as well as height.

"The ship wigs!" Pel-Thenhior said—exclaimed, declared, ejactulated. "Yes! Absolutely wretched fucking things!"

"Oh, I hate those," said Min Vechin over the rim of her glass. "Impossible to sing in."

"And absolute murder on the neck," Pel-Thenhior agreed.

"I seem to recall," Csevet said, "that a literal model ship fell out of the soprano's wig mid-duet, and the mid-soprano—Hal... Hmm. Hallelan? Havenan?—"

"Oh no," said Min Vechin, just as Pel-Thenhior said, "Halleïan."

"Mm," Csevet said, sipping at his wine. It was far too sweet, as it had been every other time he had tasted it since switching himself over from the red in the hope of slowing the progression of his drunkenness. He sipped again and applauded himself internally for not grimacing. "Halleïan spent the rest of the scene skittering about, trying to pick up all the pieces of the ship—it broke rather spectacularly on impact—while still carrying her part of the trio right after, and I recall thinking that there was not a chance in the world that she was being paid enough for that."

"We never are," said Min Vechin, far enough into her cups herself that she made a most unbecoming facial expression.

"Please tell me Alffris stepped on a piece," said Pel-Thenhior, naming the vicious excuse for a love interest in the first act of the opera, who was always famously (scandalously) barefoot for the scene that followed. Csevet bit down on a smile.

"No," he said, "but he did accidentally kick a little bit of hull right over the lip of the stage and hit the concertmaster in the eye."

Min Vechin wailed, and Pel-Thenhior roared with a fresh bout of laughter. Csevet had become well-acquainted with the particular pleasure of making his staid, anxious emperor laugh, so he was less effected than he would have once been by the act of reducing such a self-possessed person as Mer Iäna Pel-Thenhior to riotous mirth—but the moment did give him the jolt of clarity he'd been looking for all evening.

Pel-Thenhior laughed, and across the parterre, Othala Celehar's ears lifted. As they had done all evening.

And as Pel-Thenhior sobered—tonally, at least—he shot a golden, glowing glance at the othala in turn. As he had done all evening.

Ah, Csevet thought. So it was not Pel-Thenhior that had surprised Csevet, but whatever that was—subtle enough to be getting on with, but not quite so to have escaped Csevet's finely-tuned buggery barometer. (As Basreiët called it.)

Csevet scanned the small gathering until he found Cala Athmaza, lanky and tragically sober at Maia's back. He lifted a pale eyebrow in query, to which Csevet replied by darting his gaze between Pel-Thenhior and Othala Celehar, and smiled smugly. Cala’s eyes narrowed.

Finally, Csevet’s depressingly unfaltering romanticism had done him a service—there was love even for downtrodden, withholding othalas with uncomfortable callings, and Csevet was about to win ever so much money.

"Now I don't mean to pry," Csevet said, swirling his wine in anticipation of stirring the shit. "But I've heard that opera people tend to have very polarizing views on the works of Mer Mezhaär."

Iäna Pel-Thenhior's howl would have put the Wolves of Anmura to shame.

Ooh, okay, so I guess my understanding of things is kind of impaired by the fact that I'm still on Edge (I went in in-universe chrono, though--I mean I did the Empire books all jumbled because I read Pebble ages and ages ago and then the other two came in as holds from my library in the wrong order hahah--so I started the Foundation novels with Prelude) and have yet to read and Earth which I think he returns in? So I might be missing a huge amount of context regarding his presentation/interpretation/etc. etc.

Most of my ideas about Daneel's complication regarding gender mostly conform to my understanding of him (any pronouns apply 🥰🥰 but I'm used to he so I'll just go with that for now) as a fundamentally resolved, instrumental thing--though cornered of course by minimalism and limited knowledge--who has the luxury (?) of more readily identifying the contextual applications of gender, combined then with millenia of insight into the fluid/arbitrary drifts of social and cultural mores, plus his own schematics of prioritization and internalization... I think he is on like extradimensional levels of gender, internally, and I hope there is canon basis for him taking upon himself some gendered aspects in a functional/teleological manner (as he takes on other aspects of personhood! even Demerzel himself is an adopted aspect!) because I think that even if that goes uninterrogated (as so many things in these novels do GRRR!) it has even more necessary implications for his internal cognitions of gender!!!!

That said I DO also think there's something to be said about the amount of gendered socialization he gets in his most formative years (especially from his Earthman who knows his sociological formulas but does not have a very sophisticated or unblemished understanding of gender politicssdbfkdj)--which is undercut by his state of subjection and perpetual qualification and Othering from people who do know his true nature, and then the implication of Deceit (not what I believe him to be doing--at least in the context of gender/lack thereof but definitely how it would be interpreted by towards people who don't know what he is which like. very transgender existence tbh being considered inherently deceitful) but this all just makes it more texturally complex and interesting and makes him even better at being soooo gender. Love that thing!!!!

#TLDR SORRY I DON'T ACTUALLY KNOW ABOUT ANY CANON GENDERISMS ASIDE FROM THE VAGUE IMPULSES SHOWN BY VARIOUS CHARACTERS TO DEMEAN AND FEMINIZE #HIM .
