fic rec friday 43
hello and welcome to fic rec friday! where, on friday, i rec five of my favourite fics.
These Walls Have Ears by notverystraight
Before Lance’s friends arrive at his apartment for their weekly movie night, Keith is in Hunk’s car on the phone to Lance, trying to explain why they’re late, again. Mid conversation, Keith drops his phone under the seat. Assuming Lance has hung up, Pidge and Hunk start pestering Keith about certain feelings that he may be harboring, leading to some quite personal confessions. Little do they know, Lance has not hung up, and is listening in on every word. Shenanigans ensue.
the second best part of this fic is how sweet and funny this is. this fic is blushy and silly and dorky and so so so!!! it is just fun and garrison trio my love. the BEST part of this fic is lance knowing hes hot shit
2. That Won't Last, He's Gay and She's An Alien by notverystraight
Lance didn’t know what he’d expected to see when he came onto the Garrison’s training deck, but it definitely wasn’t this. Keith was panting with exertion, pinning someone to the ground with the edge of his training sword just brushing their neck. And by someone, Lance meant Acxa, one of Lotor’s old half-Galra generals. Or, Lance walks in on Keith and Acxa sparring. He has not-so-mixed feelings about it.
usually every jealousy trope fic i read induces the PHATTEST eye roll literally of all time but this one made me laugh lol. its just such a ridiculous concept and its fun basically. also krolia lowkey being a thot is hilarious
3. Go the Distance by orphan_account [EXPLICIT]
Keith is a sprinter, Lance runs long distance. Despite not competing against each other directly and despite the fact that they're training to bring glory to the same high school track team, the two end up becoming rivals who are wholeheartedly committed to victory. Along the way, however, they find themselves awfully sidetracked by the other's inspiring legs--er, skills. Much fluff and smut and no angst.
bro lance is SUCH a goober 😭😭 he gets himself into the most embarrassing situations and there is truly no one he can blame but himself. honestly this one is such a fun read and if the explicit warning bothers you, it's not the whole fic! you can easily skip it. the rivalry and getting together is just as fun and stupid as you'd expect from them truly
4. Haunted House Hang-Up by Creatortan
Keith runs a paranormal investigation YouTube channel with his friend, Pidge. Pidge is friends with Hunk, who is friends with Lance, who is very, very haunted. And also, very, very pretty.
oh my LORD i love this. nd team? check. supernatural fuckery? check. cute flowery lance? check. dorky suave keith? check. side of hot firefighter shiro? check. just an 11/10 in general top notch
5. Rambling by Creatortan
Lance was a talkative person, and he thought he had accepted that.
no seriously bc the Can't Shut Up Syndrome is the Worst side effect of adhd and other nd's tbh. i hate the way you're excited and you can feel yourself start to build and trip over your words but it doesn't matter bc it's so background! there's so much cool shit ur sharing!! and then you see the eyeroll or the shrug and it just comes crashing back on you so so quickly and hard and. god. this fic captured that so well
that’s it for today!! i’ll see y’all back next friday for the next fic rec post!!!

Don't Start Now
This is after the events of s8
-----------------------------------------------------
For some reason, my brain can picture Keith singing Don't Start Now at the top of his lungs when Lance tries to ask him out after Allura dies.
Like, yes of course he still has feelings for Lance, but the fact that he only noticed Keith after Allura is gone hurts a lot.
So Keith makes the spontaneous decision to start singing at the top of his lungs. Lance just stares at him in shock and awe, and Keith gets the feeling that Lance is even more determined to go out with him now.
He should have remembered that Lance loves Dua Lipa's music.
They end up in an all out 'please date me' war of random pop songs.
Lance randomly pops into the room one day while Keith is talking to Shiro, and he yells the chorus of Heat Waves.
Lance's songs- Shower, Halo, For Him, Make You Mine, Talk Too Much, Delicate, etc.
Keith's Songs- Crush Culture, I Knew You Were Trouble, Flowers, Bad Blood, We Are Never Getting Back Together, FRIENDS, etc. (Taylor Swift was very helpful, he can now sing most of her songs by heart.)
And the worst part is, Keith realizes that he does really want to date Lance now. It's kind of hard to ignore the gay panics when your crush sings love songs to you while staring soulfully into your eyes.
This is literally the stuff of Keith's dreams.
They're sitting on the couch with the rest of the team, watching some really cringey Altean rom-com. Although they have all diverged onto different paths, they meet up regularly.
When the credits roll, Keith starts to sing again. His voice is sore and rough from all of the belting he's been doing, but right now it's soft, and under his breath.
Lance turns to him, and he quickly catches on to what Keith is singing.
They completely forget about the rest of the team as they sing Feel It Twice as a duet.
It's perfect for them, and Keith is surprised to find his eyes watering.
Neither of them are looking at each other, but rather at the wall straight ahead.
When they do finish they turn their heads to watch each other's faces.
Lance won't let go of this. He's already lost one partner, he can't let another slip through his fingers.
And looking into Keith's starry eyes, he realizes something.
Allura was beautiful. She was funny. She was witty. But she never Lance this comforting feeling in his stomach, or the longing that is clawing at his throat. They had something together, but Allura barely glanced at him, she shrugged him off like he was some annoying roach half the time.
That was great, but this is right.
"Please," he whispers. "I'm so sorry that I dismissed you, that I didn't take this chance before. But please, please, please, I just need one chance to prove myself to you. If not, then you can break up with me, never speak to me again. Just one more try."
They both have tears on their faces, but neither cares.
And before they know it, their lips are pressed together, and Lance can feel hope blooming throughout his body like the first flowers in spring.
If Allura was fireworks and the 4th of July, then Keith is warm hugs and wind blowing through trees on a crisp day in fall.
Keith is safety and steadiness.
"Um, cool, glad you guys finally did that. The singing was starting to get on my nerves. Do you, like, need a moment?"
Both men jump apart to see Pidge watching them with an inquiring eyebrow.
Lance stammers while Keith shoves his reddening face into a pillow.
"N-No! You're good! We-We're just gonna-"
Lance can't even finish his sentence before grabbing Keith's hand and dragging him out of the room.
The head up to the observatory, which is a large glass dome which offers a wide view of the milky way above them.
Keith falls asleep being hugged around the waist by Lance.
Apparently being his boyfriend means that Keith is bound to snuggles.
Warm arms around him at all times and plenty of kisses.
Keith can live with that.

keithtober💢🎃🔪 day 22: gay🏳️‍🌈
a/n: this is an excerpt from a fic i plan to post once keithtober is over!! 👀 it's the very beginning of it :)
🔗read on ao3
content included: klance, BRIEF mention of smth sexual, embarrassment, lance being confused
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Keith doesn’t look at girls.
Lance notices this slowly, collecting data periodically as he sees it, and at first it means nothing; so what if Keith didn’t seem to care about those hot mermaid chicks? Hunk didn’t really either. Even Lance can admit that that was kind of a stupid move on his part, just distracting the mission entirely because he saw someone attractive, but come on, they were babes! He thinks he’s allowed a little leeway when that’s the case.
But Keith didn’t look at them—which was fine, whatever, Lance was the only one looking at them anyway. Point taken. This didn’t really stick in Lance’s mind before, but it does now, if only for the fact that it wasn’t an isolated incident. It kept happening, again and again. And Lance kept noticing—noticing more, in fact, because he was maybe sort of kind of POSSIBLY becoming a little obsessive about cataloguing who Keith did and didn’t look at.
Not that Keith looked (or looks) at many people, but. He’s not, like, asexual or anything; Lance knows this because he has a room next to Keith and, one night (November 9th  at 2:13am, according to Lance’s earth calendar, but really, he barely remembers it) he could hear him, like…breathing hard and making sounds and moving on the bed and ohgodhewasdefinitelymasturbatingjesusfuckingchristKEITHCANFUCK—
So, Lance knows Keith isn’t against the concept of sex. Cool. After this little episode, Lance started keeping tabs on him to figure out who he might be interested in. In order to, you know, understand him better as a teammate or…whatever. Ignoring the fact that at this point he and Keith could barely be in the same room together without wanting to kill each other, Lance was really just trying to get to know the guy! And what he found out—slowly, incrementally—was that when Keith looked at someone (which he rarely did as it was) it was never, ever a girl.
Take, for example, this one night on a random planet Lance doesn’t remember the name of, when Shiro, Allura, and Coran had (blessedly, miraculously) given them leave to do whatever they wanted. Something about “providing the calm before the storm.” Of course, Lance was ecstatic, and promptly located the swankiest club-like building in the area and dragged the entire team (sans Shiro, Allura, Pidge, and Coran, who were staying at the castleship and doing stupid stuff like resting and being too young to party and testing defenses, ugh) there for a good, old-fashioned night out.
This club, completely unbeknownst to Lance (no, really, he genuinely had no idea, why would he bring Keith someplace like this when it was Keith he wanted to fu—), was…well, basically a strip club. Or at least the alien equivalent of a strip club? Honestly, the figures were disturbingly humanoid, with only a few extra eyes and weirdly textured skin as signs to differentiate them. But their parts? Extremely similar. Lance had entered the club, full of excitement and fun bravado, ready to dance, and his eyes had immediately snapped to the models on stage…and then to their chests. And then…lower.
Yeah. He was suddenly very glad that Shiro had put his foot down and banned Pidge from coming.
After coming to his senses, Lance immediately turned to Hunk and Keith, laughing nervously. Hunk had been staring-but-trying-not-to, blushing a red that even his dark skin had shown. But Keith…Lance turned almost apprehensively to gauge his reaction, unsure if he could handle seeing Keith lust over someone, but what he found was infinitely more puzzling.
Keith was staring, that much was true. But he wasn’t staring. Not like Hunk had, or Lance before him. He was staring with curiosity and embarrassment, not shy appreciation as Hunk had been, or shocked fervor like Lance. There wasn’t a trace of interest in Keith’s deep purple eyes, and even the curiosity was gone when he blinked a moment later.
“This is not what you forced me to sign up for,” he had said simply, and then turned around and left.
Admittedly, this was a rather damning example. But as dramatic as it was, there were ten more just like it, but on a smaller scale. Whenever Lance nudged Hunk and Keith and pointed out a pretty-looking alien girl, Keith would just sigh in annoyance, not even deigning to look at whoever it was Lance was gesturing to. His eyes never wandered around the populations of planets, seeking out female-looking aliens. Even Pidge looked at girls more than Keith did, and Pidge was fourteen and probably wanted to marry a robot instead of a person anyway!
So, yeah, Lance’s investigations had heralded contradicting results: Keith can and probably wants to fuck (hhhhrhrhrhrhrmrmrmmhmhmrmtmhmhmtmtm), but he doesn’t pay attention to girls that he could do that with.
What is the truth, then? Has Keith ever had sex? Has he ever kissed someone? Lance can vouch from personal exp—uhm, from hearsay—that he had many waiting and willing hopefuls back at the Garrison who would have killed for a night (an hour, a minute, a second…) alone with him. Then again, Keith never really looked at anyone at the Garrison either.
But now is different. They’re older now; surely the topic must be on Keith’s mind, at least in some capacity? Surely their never-ending mission doesn’t consume Keith so much that he can’t even spare a glance at a pretty lady that passes by?
Well, Lance intends to find out. These questions have been driving him crazy for the better half of a month by now, and it’s edging on distracting him from his work as a pilot. Keith already occupies an absurdly large area of his brain; Lance doesn’t need to be wondering about offshoots of Keith’s personality too.
Thus, a rather boring evening finds Lance poised at Keith’s door, fresh from a needed pep-talk from Hunk and with only vaguely sweaty palms.

college/university aus:
if the silence was a song
“It’s … Your show is on so late at night,” Keith tries to explain, as if Lance didn’t know this already. “I guess I was just wondering why that is.”
A crackling silence answers him, and Keith’s stomach sinks. Did Lance hang up? Keith can’t exactly blame him.
But then he hears Lance make a noise––a short huff of breath that might have been either an impatient sigh or a quiet laugh … Keith has no clue.
“That’s the reason you’re calling? To complain about my time slot?”
or, Keith starts anonymously calling Lance's college radio show and develops an unexpected crush.
it grows stronger
College campuses are a cesspool of awkward encounters. Some more unnerving than others, as Lance comes to find. He thinks it's important to note that in all those instances, Keith is there to witness them. Actually, that's unfair. Admittedly Keith happens be useful in getting him out of those situations. Affection, as it goes, grows stronger when you're constantly being "saved" by a protective rival – but mostly friend at this point.
Or 5 times Keith helped Lance out of a situation and the 1 time Lance tried to pay back the saves.
thread our way through a string of stars
Lance is a humble astrophysics student trying to conduct research, which turns out to be a bit difficult to do when he finds a strange guy sitting in his customary research spot. A strange guy looking for aliens, no less.
Lance isn't going to stand for this.
you should date me
“I can read you, Keith Kogane. You’re tired and maybe a little sad, and this mask will lift your spirits, heal your aura, align your chakras. Trust me.”
“I chrusht myou,” Keith says through his fish lips, Lance's hands warm against his squished cheeks, his heart pounding ridiculously in his chest.
Dewey Despicable
"To the toddler who left coffee stains all over the ancient myth books – have you ever heard of these fantastic things called lids? You can put them on all sorts of things; cups, Tupperware, a coffin. Which is exactly what I’ll be shutting you in if you desecrate my thesis paper’s primary sources again."
when the lights go out
Date and a Fifth: a type of party in which everyone must come with a date and a 750 ML bottle of hard alcohol (fifth). However, you must stay zip tied to your date until the two of you finish the entire bottle together.
//
(In which Lance needs a date, Keith needs cash, and maybe they fall in love along the way.)
Very Gay a.k.a Keith Kogane
“Can I get a name?”
“Oh, uh, yeah, I’m - “ Keith pauses, if only for a moment, because he could not only get drunk over the voice that barista is graced with, but also in those eyes. Those cheekbones, lips, eyelashes. That skin, hair, nose. And woah, just woah.
Don’t fuck this up, Brain.
“I’m - uh, I’m gay.”
You’re an asshole, Brain.
[Or based on the prompt that Keith is too gay to function and he's at the mercy of a cute Cuban boy with bright blue eyes behind the counter.]
Blade of Ducklings
“Hey, babe?”
Keith hums, eyes never leaving his phone as he leans forward for his greeting kiss, something Lance provides without hesitation.
“Are you aware there’s a baby duck on your head?” Lance asks as he pulls away from his boyfriend’s cheek to stare at the small duckling on Keith’s hair, snuggled up and quacking softly.
“Yeah, turns out I have a son now.”
“Cool. Does he have a name?”
“Blade.”
“I don’t even know why I ask.”
[The one where Keith adopts a duckling my accident and comes to realization that letting your child fly away is the hardest part of being a parent.]
unmixed signals
Lance honked his horn. “Keith, get your bitch ass in my car before I run you over.”
“Sorry my dad taught me not to enter strangers’ cars.”
“You’re gonna get sick standing out here just get in.”
Keith cupped his hands around his mouth. “HELP!” he yelled. “I don’t know this man! He’s trying to kidnap me!”
--
In which a rainy Sunday morning brings with it some wet groceries, a valiant rescue, and some much needed romantic clarity.
Dorks
Inspired by a post on Tumblr!
Lance is the only one listening to the current presentation, and oh boy is it something to listen to. The kid has been rambling on about aliens for ten minutes and he is trying so hard not to laugh. So hard. Turns out the kid didn't even think Lance was paying attention, so when he finds out Lance was he books it. Like, as fast it takes Lance to turn his head, that kid was gone.
Keith wants to die. The Hot Guy in his bio class was actually listening to him talk about aliens. That's it. He's done. Kill him now.
Poor Shiro is just trying to keep his little brother sane.

Once Bitten, Twice Stupid prt 158 prt 1
158
Lance’s scan went well. Their twins were doing well, better than Lance felt at any rate. He and Keith had gone shopping. Keith had sprung it on him after the scan results were positive. Confused as to where his boyfriend was taking him, as it clearly wasn’t back to the apartment or Garrison, Lance had started crying when Keith’s surprise became clear. He’d been worrying himself over what had been said in the toilets. Worrying that Keith would work it out, and no longer love him. Neither of them had been “gay” before meeting each other. Lance wasn’t sure what to describe his sexuality as. Men were hot. Women were hot. He could appreciate both, but Keith was a whole next level batting out of his league kind of deal. Keith might be tall, broad, grizzled and sexy as all heck, but he was so much more than that. He was funny. He was smart, funny, coffee addicted, and there wasn’t anything he’d change about his boyfriend.
Heading into the store, Lance knew it took a lot of courage on Keith’s behalf. The store’s car park had been pretty full, large signs in the windows declared some kind of sale. Keith grabbed a shopping cart, anything he liked his boyfriend wanted to buy. Lance felt the exact same way... Even if he was the more practical one of the two. The vampire only had a couple of rules for their shopping trip; practicality came first and they didn’t need super duper fancy when something simple would do the job.
Steered away from the cute onesies, Lance once again was clueless. There was so much to look at, his hands resting on his baby bump, trying to take everything in. That’s when he realised. Keith was leading him to maternity clothes and he could have kissed his boyfriend for it. There was absolutely no way to hide his bump now. The clothes Keith had bought him only just covering the roundness of his stomach. Tears rolled down his face, excited as heck for new clothes that’d fit his changing body. Keith misinterpreting his tears, trying to stutter out asking what was wrong as Lance tried to reassure him they were happy tears.
Though feeling self conscious as he looked at all the flowery and flowing materials, Keith urged him to pick whatever he wanted. He’d always dressed himself somewhat neatly, much preferring the fashion of now to short short and jeans that suffocated his testicles. He couldn’t help but blush hard at putting in a couple of maternity bra’s. He didn’t exactly have breasts, but he didn’t not at the same time. Keith seemed to love them. Especially during sex where he’d hold Lance’s breasts instead of his hips. His boyfriend was definitely more okay with the changes in Lance’s body than Lance was, but that was okay because it meant Keith still accepted him for him and not his body.
The next wave of tears hit hard as they looked at cots. Lance wanted a room the twins could grow in. Some place filled with love and comfort, he was hit with wondering if Krolia wanted the same when she was pregnant with Keith. She’d probably had so many hopes and dreams, without the thought of having to abandon him in the future. Noticing Keith staring down into the crib, he moved to wrap his arms around his boyfriend’s waist. This had to be hard for Keith. To be wondering the same thing. To have spent years thinking his mother didn’t love him. Nuzzling into Keith, Keith turned his face to kiss Lance on the forehead. The gesture soft and sweet, making Lance smile with the amount of love he felt for his boyfriend. He loved Keith, and he loved being with him, but lately he’d found himself really needing time with his Gremlin. Pidge might not be overly maternal, yet she gave him a level of comfort that he longed for. That his sister would come to his house threw things out of whack. Pidge was more of a sister to him than his own sisters.
“You worried about being a daddy?”
Nosing Keith’s cheek, Lance knew he was. Keith had been acting a little strange in the way he was ignoring Krolia. Shiro mentioned Krolia called because Keith wasn’t picking up his phone. Lance left to wonder if it was because he wanted to go back to the house or if Keith had other things on his mind. He wanted to be able to chalk it all down to this planned surprise but that didn’t feel entirely right. The only logical conclusion he had was that Keith was internally panicking over being a daddy all over again
“I don’t know if I can be a good dad. I don’t know what I’m doing. I don’t know how to choose a cot... like... what if I choose wrong? What if they die because I chose wrong?”
That was being a tad dramatic
“All of them have to conform to a certain safety standard these days. I was looking online a little and you can get cots that convert to toddler beds”
“That sounds like a smart idea. I’m sorry, this was my idea but I don’t even know where to start”
“We start with the basics. Shit, shower and sleep. So, cots, a baby bath, and I don’t think we really need a change table”
Keith snorted with laughter
“I don’t think you have to be so blunt”
“I’m just saying, they’re like the real basics we need”
“We haven’t even picked a theme or a colour for the nursery”
“Maybe we can choose it together based on the furniture? The only thing I was going to keep in there was the chest of drawers”
That made sense, right? Like repainting a wall to highlight a certain picture... Then again, decoration wasn’t Keith’s strong point. Red on black, with more black was how his boyfriend rolled
“But... like... bedding? How do we pick bedding?”
As long as it wasn’t black, Lance wasn’t fussy
“That’s easy. If it’s soft and nice it comes home with us”
“I don’t think it works that way”
“It does now. You’re going to be the greatest daddy to our twins. I know you don’t believe it, but I firmly do”
“I feel... out of my depth”
If only Keith could peek inside his mind and see how unalone he was with those thoughts. Keith was blissfully ignorant to his internal struggles with his boyfriend being labeled by an idiot. Shiro had been right. Each time he’d started to feel shitty about Keith being slandered, all he had to do was think about everything good inside Keith and how that idiot had no clue about his boyfriend
“So do I. I had a bit of practice growing up, before Luis became a dick. We’ll work everything out together”
And they did. Keith found a convertible bed he like while Lance found a change table he absolutely loved. There were drawers. Drawers and an inbuilt bin. The second he saw it he knew it was a game changer. Fluttering his eyelashes at his boyfriend, Keith snatched up to of the paper slips for the cots before jogging over to him. Lance hadn’t meant to wander away. The change table completely to blame as it lured him over.
Looking the piece of furniture up and down, Keith frowned at him
“I thought you didn’t want a change table”
That frown wasn’t bring down Lance’s excitement. If anything he was more determined to show Keith how fucking cool it was
“I didn’t know I needed a change table. Look at this beast! Look at it. There’s drawers. Drawers! They didn’t have this stuff when I was growing up and it has a bin!”
“What do we need a bin for?”
“Nappies, obviously! And wipes... Babe, I don’t think I’ve ever fallen in love with a piece of furniture so fast, and it’s white so it matches the beds”
Only in colour. The style was more curved, but with the right accessories it’d blend right in. Plus, he needed it. He needed it more than he needed blood. Every molecule of his being seemed to be vibrating with excitement over how much of game changer this really was. He loved his old drawer, but this... It was more a case of “Drawers? What drawers?”
Keith sighed at him in an overly exaggerated way, he was winning. Keith was caving
“If that’s what you want...”
Lance nearly squealed, yet as much as he wanted it... needed it, he wasn’t going to disregard Keith’s opinion
“Only if it’s what you want”
“They said online something about “Push Presents”. Do you want a push present?”
Lance knew he’d done plenty of research, and he knew Keith was the same, yet it still thrilled him Keith was researching all things baby. He didn’t really need a push present. Their twins were enough. Them alive and breathing, that was it
“I don’t need a push present, but I think I need this change table. No. I know we need this... I mean, look how practical it is! Babe, look at it!”
Keith laughed softly, Lance stepping back so his boyfriend could inspect the change table as he gestured wildly towards it. Keith’s eyes widening at the amount of space in the drawers as he checked the depth of the top two
“Seeeeeee. Think of all the supplies we could fit in there”
“We have to buy the supplies first”
Pffft. At this stage Lance was happy enough to buy it simply to look at it
“Good thing we’re at a baby super store...”
Keith tried to hide his smile, coughing to clear his throat, before giving up with a shake of his
“Alright. We’re doing it. Cross change table off the list. We’re getting one of these bad boys... Holy heck, the bin bit has a latch. Kosmo’s going to have a hard time getting past that”
Keith was hooked! Lance knew it! That squeal escaping out his nose, Keith raising an eyebrow at the weird sound. Pfft. Keith already knew he was dating a weirdo, a very excited weirdo
“I know! Whoever designed this needs a medal. So if we get this, then the bedding, and the supplies we need most when I pop, that’s like almost everything”
If he popped tomorrow they’d be basically prepared. Not that he intended to. He wanted these two to bake as a long as they could
“What else do you want to get?”
“A rug, and a bookcase... oh, and a chair. I definitely want a chair in there for nursing”
For nursing and “sleeping” in on sleepless nights. In his mind he could see Keith sitting in the chair, reading their twins their bedtime stories, or holding one of their twins for a bottle feed
“That sounds smart. Okay. Done. Where do we buy a chair from?”
Lance smiled at his boyfriend as Keith looked over the display of cots and bedding. With how large the store was, he wouldn’t be surprised if they did have rugs, bookcases and chairs, probably with a high price tag...
“From a furniture store. They’re not hugely necessary items, and we’re not going to have room in the back of the my baby once we get the boxes for the cots and the change table”
“Do you think they’ll deliver?”
The cots, or the chair? Either way, Garrison was outside of almost every free delivery zone. He knew from experience, but happy to spend the money if he really needed to
“If you want to pay a $250 delivery fee”
“Fuck that. I could probably ask Hunk if we can use his dad’s Ute”
Lance loved Hunk’s dad. He was as easy going as Hunk, but he didn’t want to ask for a favour without being there in person
“Or we could save it for the next time we’re in Platt, it’s only two weeks, and by then we should have an idea of colours to match with
“That’s like super smart. Okay, so we need bedding next?”
“Mattresses too...”
“They don’t come with a mattress?”
“Some do, some don’t. I want to try and find one with a removable cover”
“They have removable covers?”
Keith seemed extremely shocked by this. Lance could only hang his head. It was like the first time Keith discovered the waterproof mattress protector on their bed. He’d been so confused until Lance had gently pointed out wet spots happened and he’d rather them not happen to his mattress. That and when Blue brought him presents he didn’t want squashed entrails on his mattress either.
Kissing Keith’s cheek, Lance then nodded
“Yep. Trust me, you’ll thank me the first time you have to clean shart sheets”
“Our twins are going to be perfect”
“Babies poop, babe. Fact of life”
“But they’re only small”
Boy was Keith in for a surprise. Good thing Lance hadn’t mentioned projectile vomiting and sometimes stuff came out both ends at once
“And sometimes they make a huge mess. I’ll save the first one just for you”
Wrinkling his nose, Keith looked as if the spell of excitement over their twins had been broken
“You don’t have to”
“Nope. You insisted”
“Well don’t let me do it again”
“I make no promises”
*
Garrison. Keith was grateful to be home again. Lance had been texting on the drive home, Keith finding out who when Hunk and Pidge had been waiting for them at the house. Volunteering Hunk to help unload, Lance was whisked away by Pidge. Keith somewhat glad Lance hadn’t insisted on helping with the heavy lifting. His boyfriend had loudly proclaimed he was beached this morning, while laying on his back with his belly out. The scan might have gone well, but Coran had done a lot of “ahhing” and “ohhhhing” and telling Lance to get plenty of rest, while not explaining anything to the pair of them. Though Keith had planned to take Lance shopping, he’d upped the schedule to distract his boyfriend from whatever Coran could possibly mean.
Opening up the back of the Bronco, Hunk’s eyes widened at the game of Tetris Keith had played in the back to fit everything in. Each cot had two boxes, the change table had three, then there were two mattresses, three tins of paint, a fly screen door Keith had no idea what for, plus the baby clothes, bedding, Lance’s clothes, the small amount of shopping they’d done for home, as well as nappies and wipes. Both of them had spent a fair chunk today, without buying the chair, bookcase, or rug Lance wanted for the room. Keith understood how Hunk was speechless, the hunter also somewhat speechless at the pile of shopping to be brought in and sorted.
Explaining the pile, Keith pointed as he talked
“The big boxes are for the nursery and the bags need to go to into the living room. Lance wants to wash everything before he puts things away. If it’s food, well, you know...”
Hunk cutting him off as he eyed the very top of the pile
“Is that a door?”
Yep. The stupid thing kept sliding forward to smack him in the back of the head every damn time he braked. Lance wouldn’t explain, saying it’d become obvious if he was patient
“Lance wanted it. He got distracted at the hardware store”
“I’m not going to ask...”
“You know he probably heard you ask”
Hunk groaned
“That’s not fair, man. And how dare you guys decide you’re staying in Platt without telling us about your date”
Lance had mentioned in passing that he missed his Gremlin. Unloading the bronco would leave Pidge and Lance to have some sibling time together. Keith knew he’d been thinking a lot about Lance’s sister showing up, which meant Lance had to be thinking about it at least twice as much
“I bet that’s what Lance is telling Pidge all about. Seeing you haven’t been to Platt, Lance brought home papers for Shay to sign. Basically the usual “she’s not going to tell anyone he’s pregnant””
“That’s usual?”
Okay, maybe not the usual... Lance said he’d sit down with Shay and explain things, and that the conversation was well over due. Hunk had dropped it on them so semi casually that old Keith would have flipped
“Nope. If you want to grab that top box, I’ll grab the one next to it”
Hunk looked the pile of shopping up and down
“That door’s gotta come out first. Did you guys just buy everything?”
“Not quite everything. Lance did get caught up looking at kitchen sinks”
Hunk didn’t laugh. Keith secretly quite proud of the joke. Lance would have laughed. He would have teased him about about understanding universal jokes better than he had when they met. Maybe even made a joke about “Who needs a kitchen sink when I can tap you?”. He missed Lance.
Talking as they unloaded, Keith found out he’d missed nothing much happening at the garage, other than Hunk’s dad looking for him when he hadn’t come in. Spending time with Hunk was pretty cool. Hunk knew enough to be a hell of a mechanic if he’d wanted to, so it’d been easy to discuss bike specs with him over Keith’s baby. The new exhaust pipe he’d ordered hadn’t arrived yet, the shipment delayed, but from the way Hunk filled him in he could tell the big guy had missed having him around. It was nice to feel missed, even if it twinged at him that Matt had gotten the job he’d hoped to apply for. Lance was right, he was made for being hands on.
There was a certain feeling of accomplishment that came with fixing each part of his bike up. According to Coran’s schedule he’d be starting back as a hunter in March. Coran hoped to have everything in place for summoning the demon out of Curtis by then, then he’d be a trio with Shiro and Curtis, instead of simply partners with his brother. Lance had asked Coran about what went into summoning out a demon, and Keith promptly became lost when it came to things that needed to be brewed.
He’d tried to pay attention for Shiro’s sake since it was his future brother-in-law’s life at stake, yet Lance seemed to have a better grip on how it’d all go down. He’d meant to ask Shiro and Curtis to come stay a few days before the summoning, yet forgot thanks to “baby brain”. The store had been pretty intimidating. As was the three missed calls from Krolia on his phone. Keith knew he couldn’t keep ignoring Krolia, but Krolia seemed to think he wanted to rush into proposing to Lance, leaving him agitated that she was meddling again.
Speaking of proposing, he’d also had a kind of crazy idea. Miriam’s rings were where they should be, but part of him wished he’d had them for when the time felt right to propose to his boyfriend. While Lance had slept, Keith had worked. He’d found every photo he had of Miriam, cropping things down until he had a clear mental picture of how her ring had been designed. His intention now was to save back up and find a jeweller in Platt able to recreate Miriam’s wedding ring, with his own tiny twist in it. Instead of three diamonds, he wanted 5 stones. 2 amethysts and two sapphires, with a diamond in the middle. Lance would realise the significance the moment he saw the ring. Or, at least, that was Keith’s hope. Never had anyone managed to reassure him about the unique colouration of his eyes like Lance did. Amethyst the closest stone he was probably going to be able to get, while he hoped he’d be able to find sapphires close to Lance’s own eye colour.
“Earth to Keith, you in there, Bud?”
Wiping the sweat from his brow, Keith nodded as he straightened up. Having Hunk cut down on the number of trips up and down the stairs, but damn if he didn’t feel weaker than he had been
“Sorry, I was off thinking about the future”
“Was it interesting?”
“Mildly. What’s up?”
“I asked if I should just leave the bag of nappies up here? I grabbed them with the second mattress”
“Oh, yeah. That’d be awesome. You’ve got to see the change table when it’s set up. Lance is love with it. This thing is awesome”
Hunk chuckled at him
“I thought Lance was adamant about not having one. He told me he didn’t want one when we asked”
All their friends had asked what they wanted or needed. Being their firstborns, Keith and Lance both wanted to prove that they could support their growing family without the need of gifting. Keith particularly felt the need to overcompensate as he’d never had any real family experience until Shiro
“He didn’t until today. You should have seen the look on his face. He seemed ready to commit murder if he didn’t get the change table”
“I’m sure he wasn’t that bad”
Maybe not, but I’d been love at first sight for his boyfriend. Lance thinking he’d been turning on the charm to sway Keith, the joke on his boyfriend as Keith was very readily swayed by his lover
“He would have carried the one from the store home if he had to”
Hunk laughed openly as they both imagined that. Lance really would have. He’d probably even say it wasn’t at all heavy
“Is it bad I can see that? That’s bad, isn’t it?”
Keith snorted, smile wide
“Not really. Lance can be very determined”
“Man, don’t even go there. He’s almost as stubborn as you are about not letting us know about this date of yours. I know you took photos. Lance said there were photos”
“Only on my phone. We’re lucky half the zoo didn’t come home with us. Did you know he has no problem with snakes? He’s jus like “Yep, that’s a bit snake. I’m gonna touch it””
“I don’t need to know what you two get up to in private”
Keith was stunned. Slack jaw stunned. Their little Hunk was going there
“Oh man, don’t tell me I broke you”
“I’m not broken. Lance is going to lecture me about corrupting you with all the time we’ve spent together lately”
“You’ll have to talk to Shay about that one. No offence, dude, but she’s the one”
“None taken. If this is everything, we can collapse now, right?”
“Sounds good to me. I’ve got some ice tea in the fridge”
Keith hadn’t been an “ice tea person” until he’d met Lance. Lance barely made ice tea, but Hunk... Hunk was their culinary god. Not that he’d tell Lance. Lance’s cooking was so amazing he was sure he was getting fat. Fat and lazy... He liked being mostly a home husband without the whole constantly fearing for his life. He liked having good people to come back to, no matter how far he want, they always welcomed him back
“Hunk, you are a god... You know this right? I don’t know how I can thank you for everything. We keep up and leaving... but... you guys...”
“Aw, man! Bring it in!”
Hugging Hunk, they both wrinkled their noses at how sweaty they were from lugging everything upstairs
“Dude, we need showers”
That they did. A cold shower would be just the thing to wash away the heat in Keith’s cheeks. He and Hunk had hugged before, but this hug had him feeling a little self conscious. The day had been long, shopping wiped him out much more than than thinking about his dwindling bank account
“You can go first. I should check on Lance”
“I don’t mind if I do. The tea’s in the fridge, all you have to do is pour”
“Thanks... and thanks for helping. Lance probably could have done it all in one trip”
“I don’t know. I think even he might have struggled trying to carry everything”
“Well... maybe. He would have tried though”
“This is true. Okay, I’m gonna hit the shower. Don’t forget the tea”
“As if I could”
Being polite Keith grabbed out the serving tray, glasses, and pitcher of tea before carrying them to the living room. Lance was snoring his head off, laying with his head in Pidge’s lap, Pidge shooting him a worried look
“Keith... I think I broke him. He started crying then fell asleep”
Okay. Lance crying wasn’t that unusual. Keith was still learning that tears didn’t mean sadness. Sometimes they just seemed to happen. Lance had cried on the way home because he’d bitten a hole in the straw of his drink... Still, the tray shook slightly in his hands, Keith forcing himself not to rush to put it down on the coffee table and spill everything as he did.
Spilling the tea slightly, the hunter forced down a breath. Pidge was still staring up at him, her hand on Lance’s hair
“I didn’t mean to make him cry. We were talking and he started crying and I didn’t mean to...”
Keith hoped he hadn’t been making a judgemental expression. Pidge adored Lance, she’d never intentionally make Lance cry
“It’s hormones mostly. Should I be worried about what you were talking about?”
“He asked if his sister had been back, then told me how much he’d missed, started crying and fell asleep...”
“Ah...”
Keith mentally groaned. He was terrible at this “comforting people thing” when it wasn’t Lance
“I didn’t mean to”
“It’s not your fault. We’ve had a pretty long day, and this is Lance, he cried a lot even before he fell pregnant”
Pidge snorted before sobering. Keith tried not feel possessive watching Pidge stroke Lance’s hair
“Yeah... I just... didn’t mean to upset him”
“I doubt it was you. Some stuff happened in Platt... Some wanker hurt him for bumping into him and he realised a few things. Trust me when I say it’s really not thanks to anything you’ve done”
“Thanks, Keith. I love him, you know. And did you just say someone hurt him?!”
Lance whined in his sleep, Pidge clamping her free hand over her mouth as they both watched. When it became clear Lance wasn’t about to wake, she slowly moved her hand down, whisper yelling
“Someone hurt him?! What the hell happened?”
“He had a bit of a panic attack, and the guy didn’t appreciate Lance stumbling into him. He’s okay now, but... Actually, I have something to ask you”
Keith was still on the fence about returning to the house. Lance wanted to go. Keith didn’t want to go. He didn’t want Lance committing that place to memory and his nightmares getting worse
“Oh? Actually, I’ve got something to tell you. Lance fell asleep before I could talk to him about it... well, two somethings... You go first”
Pidge had something to tell him? Why did he get the feel he wasn’t going to be happy? She was smiling, but he knew how sharp her teeth could be behind that smile
“You’ve known Lance longer than I have, and I don’t want to fuck this up”

On Let’s Voltron, the showrunners, and fandom
On Thursday an interview came out on Let’s Voltron, the ostensibly final interview with the showrunners of this now-completed show. Within an hour a few tweet threads appeared and incited a new wave of hatred and anger towards the showrunners, mostly by people relying on these tweet threads rather than listening to the interview themselves.
I don’t like secondhand info that sparks outrage; and having watched both AB interviews and seen how outraged people got over them, without having seen either, I strongly suspected that this interview was nowhere near as incendiary as the tweet threads suggested.
And lo and behold, I was right. Much of what was reported in tweets was misconstrued, or lacking the additional information that listening to someone’s tone provides. I didn’t hear two snarky showrunners smugly enjoying the chaos that their truly lacklustre season provided. I heard two people who were exhausted and beaten down by both the expectations of the fandom and the limitations placed on them by people with more money and power. They didn’t call Shiro “boring”, they referred to their initial vision of him as boring. They didn’t say he was repetitive, they said his backstory was repetitive of other characters’ in the series and was cut. There was one salty comment from JDS about how Voltron and Atlas merging was cool but everyone was too bummed about s8 to appreciate it, but there’s a dark humor to it that reads to me like a man struggling to joke about something neutral and positive in a season that was poorly received by fans and many critics alike. The vast majority of the interview is not much we haven’t already heard, though there is a very telling segment that lasts about 5-10 minutes where they discuss the heavy limitations on representation in cartoons. Ezor and Zethrid were allowed to exist, they say, because they were secondary characters. And female. The words “main heroes” with an S, are repeated several times by LM when describing who was and was not allowed to be LGBT. She explicitly states that wlw is one thing, but mlm is a whole other battle.
As disappointed as I am in the mistakes JDS and LM made, I find myself feeling very defensive of them as I see the people who once defended them from ants now begin to exhibit ant-like behavior themselves. “They should never be allowed to work in animation again” says one tweet. “They never gave a shit about this show” says another. “S8 was their explicit revenge on fans.”
It makes me unbelievably sad to read this. JDS and LM made mistakes. S8 was objectively terrible. Their attempt to shoehorn in “bonus” representation backfired terribly. They’ve been upfront about Voltron never having been planned with a happy ending in mind, and buckle down hard when confronted with the notion that killing Allura was a bad move.
But as they’ve said many, many times, this show was a labor of love for them. They worked their asses off to pitch something grand to Dreamworks because they were fans of the original and wanted to do it justice. But then they got the show and proceeded to get buffeted around for 4 yrs by dreamworks and the rules of a pre-existing IP and half the story ideas they come up with get shot down by execs for any number of reasons. People have latched onto the fact that the last third of the series wasn’t properly planned from the beginning, but I’d like to remind people that the plan they had for s3-6 was completely upended by one (1) executive call. The showrunners have said that they purposefully left things out of the bible to make it harder for execs to say NO to something well in advance. They were, as my director frequently calls it, “playing the game”, the careful balance of trying to tell a good story while also pleasing the client demands for a robot toy show. It’s a fight. Part of playing the game is leaving decisions so late that it becomes far too late to be changed by executives. But the downside of this is sometimes running out of time to do the things you want to do.
I’d like to point out too that in the interview at one point they actually say, “we knew who our audience was. They [the marketing people and higher ups] didn't.” So for 4 yrs they struggled to make the story they wanted to tell, they lost directors and writers, because the demands were way too high and people were burning out and leaving in an industry where being overworked is so par for the course that burnout is just a constant state of being. In other words, it takes extreme amounts of stress for people to burn out, and there is a certain mentality in this industry of burning out being a sign of weakness. When 2/3 directors left (one of them without the safety net of another offer) they put a bit of their reputation on the line-- and left anyway. And through it all JDS and LM, like any creators, were just trying to tell the story they wanted to see, scrambling to manage executive demands, working on multiple episodes at once and trying to maintain the storyline through them, losing people to burnout, having to rewrite entire scenes when voice actors weren’t available, and fighting for the show to be better than it was.
I'm not absolving the showrunners of guilt, I'm just feeling bad that this is where they ended up because at the end of the day they genuinely were coming from a place of good intentions and a desire to tell, from their perspective a good story. And they did fight for rep, to the point that when initially Shiro was not allowed to be gay, they considered getting up and walking away and ending the project but they stayed because of the crew who would have been summarily put out of work. They weighed the importance of having that representation vs the jobs of 100s of people. That’s how important it was to them.
Obvious, they didn't stick the landing, and it’s fair to say they outright screwed it up in a massive way that’s going to be remembered for a very long time. On the Shiro front they didn't have time to, in a way that would have felt genuine and agreeable for everyone. Keith was never ever going to be allowed. Maybe if Shiro and Keith had both been women, it would have been, which is a sad thought on the state of this industry and the kind of gendered homophobia that still exists in media both animation and otherwise. JDS and LM didn’t think far enough ahead on this, didn’t think outside of their pool of internal knowledge as non-LGBT people. As terrible as it is, it’s important to note they did this not out of a place of malice or vengeance, but an earnest, if misguided attempt to try and diversify the landscape. It did a lot of damage and they should not be rewarded for this move; but they also shouldn’t be being painted as the mustache-twirling villains so much of the fandom tries to make them out to be.
I hope this has been a huge lesson for them on the importance of stepping outside of your own situation when creating minority characters and properly discussing these characters with multiple people in real life who fall into those categories. No one LGBT person can or should speak for the entire community, as we’ve well seen with certain crewmembers.
Killing Allura is a much harder act to forgive because that was something they had time to think about and plan for and it should have been the more obvious lesson. There was ROOM to ask someone outside of themselves, “does this work”. There was room to be educated on why this was a terrible move both socially and narratively. There is room and time now, and dozens of articles about this very issue, that both showrunners should be reading and absorbing especially as their next projects involve a host of diverse characters. Their insistence to buckle down on the Allura Issue to me reads as; they haven’t learned anything from this, or taken the time to understand people’s pain about it. This is something that desperately needs to change especially as they continue to make movies and presumably TV shows. I do hope it’s something that will.
All this to say, please listen to the interview yourself before adding to the hate mob. If you’re still angry after listening to the interview yourself, that is your prerogative but I encourage you not to transform that anger into venomous hatred against the showrunners. The show is over; as fans we can transform this space into whatever we want it to be since Voltron is effectively ours now. Is attacking the showrunners, as ant1s have famously done for years, the image we really want to hold onto going forward?

Cinnamon Bagels and Peppermint Tea Part 3
The third part of the Cinnamon Bagels and Peppermint Tea Series, in which Lance owns a cute marketplace bakery, and Shiro tries his damn best to make sure his delinquent brother knows about it. Alternative Title: Shiro is the ultimate wingman and Keith has a gay crisis.
For anyone who remembers this piece, I’ve decided to continue this AU (click here for part 2)! Read the full piece below the bar, or @/sleapea on ao3 or instagram 💕
Shiro was standing in the kitchen, coffee in hand, when Keith stormed into their living room. The room was dim, aglow with the light from the setting sun and nothing else.
Even in the fading light, the first thing Shiro noticed was that Keith looked… more put together than usual, to say the least. Shiro immediately dismissed the storming… that was the usual for Keith. But wearing his hair in a neat braid down the side of his neck, rather than his usual, messy bun? Now that was new. So was wearing a nice pair of black jeans and a grey, fitted crew neck instead of a hoodie and sweatpants. And, by the astonishing lack of wrinkles, Shiro could tell that they were from his closet, not his bedroom floor. The last time he saw Keith this neat, it had been at their mother’s second wedding. Two years ago.
He watched intently, knowing full well that Keith was pointedly ignoring him. He remained quiet as Keith shrugged on his leather jacket by the front door, and as he laced up his boots. It was only when Keith turned to face the door and wrapped his hand around the doorknob that Shiro asked:  “Where are you going?”
Keith flinched, hand pausing around the knob. He slowly looked over his shoulder, expression guarded. Shiro grinned.
“To the bakery,” he grumbled.
Shiro shifted so that he could prop his hip against the kitchen counter. When he was comfortable, he took a long, slow sip of coffee. Under his unwavering gaze, Keith began to squirm, a small flush creeping up his cheeks. If Shiro didn’t know any better, he’d almost say that his baby brother looked sheepish.
“Do you… want anything?”
“Oh, no, no. I’m good,” Shiro answered casually. He waved him off, took another slow sip of his coffee. Keith prickled.
“What do you want?” he snapped. As usual, Keith didn’t try to hide how annoyed he was. Although, Shiro didn’t think Keith could hide how he felt, even if he did want to.
Either way, as usual, Shiro ignored it.
“Hmm? Nothing,” he shrugged, expression neutral.
“Shiro,” Keith deadpanned, finally taking his hand from the knob and turning to fully face his brother. “I’ve known you my entire life,” he paused, taking the time to breathe in heavy, collect himself. Then, he crossed his arms and raised a frustrated brow, exhaling as he levelled him with a stare. “I know when you’re full of shit.”
“Easy there, cowboy,” Shiro chuckled. He raised his mug to his lips again, but paused before taking a sip, as if deep in thought. “How many times have you gone to the bakery this week, Keith?” Keith’s eyes widened, like the question caught him off guard.
“...why?” he asked slowly.
“Humour me.”
Keith narrowed his eyes at him, holding his gaze. Shiro met his eyes easily, amused smile on his face all the while. It never took long for Keith to crack— usually, his impatience or his curiosity had him caving right… about...
Keith broke their eyes with a loud huff, an exaggerated eye roll. “Fine, you win,” he mumbled, cheeks flushed and frustrated. Shiro tried to stifle his laugh behind his mug, but if the glare Keith shot him was anything to go by, he didn’t do a very good job.
“I went on Monday… after finishing a commission,” he began tentatively, gaze shifting in concentration. “Tuesday when you worked late, because I didn’t feel like making dinner. Then… again on Wednesday becau—”
“Keith,” Shiro cut him off with an amused chuckle. "How many times?”
Keith let out a frustrated sigh and shot him a look, but Shiro merely laughed. Frowning, Keith began to count on his fingertips. “1, 2, 3…” he mumbled under his breath “...6?”
“What day is it today?” Shiro prodded. Keith paused.
“...Thursday?”
Shiro nodded, but kept quiet. Patiently, he waited until...
Keith’s eyes widened as the lightbulb flicked on.
“That’s way too many times, isn’t it…” Keith began, entirely to himself. He instantly took to pacing back and forth, back and forth, like he was trying to run a small line into the floor. “Holy shit. What does he think of me? Is that weird?” He stared down at the ground in horror for a moment before bursting aloud. “Who eats that many bagels, of course it’s weird!”
Shiro simply watched, content to let Keith talk this one out himself.
“I definitely shouldn’t go. You’re right, yeah, no way,” Keith continued, decidedly. He was silent for all of 5 seconds before he slumped, the reality of what he’d just resolved sinking in. “But… I want to see him,” he whispered, face fallen. He looked just like a kicked puppy.
“And the truth comes out,” Shiro laughed. His little brother was so smitten— it was sweet, if Shiro was being honest.
“What did you do??” Keith whirled on him then, eyes wide and questioning.
“Pardon me?” Shiro asked, stunned.
“What did you do with Allura?”
Shiro blushed, caught off guard for the first time that evening. “Oh, uh… that was a long time ago.” He tried to laugh light-heartedly, but it sounded more like a strangled cough than anything else. “Mmm… yeah. I’m pretty old. Can’t seem to remember.” Without missing a beat, he glanced down at the underside of his wrist. “Wow, look at the time. Better head to bed…”
He wasn’t wearing a watch.
“Shiro! Come on,” Keith whined, features morphing into his signature “Shiro caves every time I make this face” expression. And, he was right. Shiro did  cave every time he made that expression.
Shiro groaned.
“You already know the story!” He appealed, a little indignant.
“Humour me.” Keith shot back, and Shiro flinched. Oh, how he hated it when his own tricks were used against him.
“I miss when you used to be cute, you know? Like when you were really small. And couldn’t talk,” he sighed, defeated.
“Shiro…”
“FINE. Fine,” he relented. “But only because I’m an adult who is mature now.”
Keith rolled his eyes. “Psh, yeah. Okay.”
Shiro narrowed his eyes at Keith, but all his little brother did was shrug. Shiro huffed, took to pinching the bridge of his nose with his thumb and forefinger. He tried his best to act annoyed, but he couldn’t help the small smile that crept onto his face.
When he was a senior in highschool, Shiro had been captain of the boy’s soccer team. Allura had been captain of the girl’s team. They’d hardly known each other until Shiro caught word that one of his freshmen had been heckling the girl’s team after practice.
To this day, Shiro isn’t quite sure how it happened. Somehow, the girl’s team ended up challenging the boys to a friendly match, an opportunity to put their money where their mouths were. And, Shiro could hardly refuse, given it had been his rookie who prompted the match in the first place.
The girl’s team ended up winning 3 - 2. Shiro will never forget the way Allura handled the ball, knocking him right off his feet, literally and figuratively, to score the winning goal. To this day, her graceful footwork was something he still marvelled every time he watched her play.
“I… well, you know how the match went,” Shiro said, and Keith snorted. Shiro elbowed him in the side before continuing, as though Keith hadn't interrupted. “Pretty hard to… look cool after someone knocks you down like that.”
Keith scowled as he rubbed at his side, but his eyes remained attentive.
“I went up to her after the match and asked her to prom.”
“Right there?”
Shiro smiled at the fond memory. “Right there,” he nodded.
“Right after she kicked your ass?”
“She didn't kick my ass—”
“She still said yes?”
“Well, first she laughed so hard she choked on her gatorade…”
“I can’t believe this worked out for you,” Keith mumbled.
“Me neither,” Shiro laughed, “but… she liked that, I guess. Said most guys would have been walking away with their tails between their legs by now. Which, they were. The rest of the team.” Shiro laughed to himself, expression gone completely soft. Keith made a face that he pretended not to notice.
“That didn’t help me at all,” he frowned, glaring at his brother as if his current predicament was entirely his fault. Which… in a way, it was.
“You wanted to know!” Shiro instantly sputtered, indignant.
“I thought you’d be more useful!” Keith snapped back, and Shiro felt downright scandalized. He gaped in the silence that fell over them both as Keith took to pouting, arms crossed and brows comically furrowed.
“Hmm, well, if I'm not useful, I guess I’ll just keep this next part to myself,” he spoke slowly as the thought hit him, grinning at Keith as his little brother perked his head up.
“What next part…?” He asked, tentative. It was hopeful, despite the lingering pout he wore.
“The part where I met Lance’s sister this week,” Shiro admitted, grin turning from playful to downright devilish as Keith’s eyes nearly popped out of his head.
“WHAT— and you didn’t tell me?”
“Because I knew you’d…” he waved a hand, gesturing to Keith and his current state. His face was flushed a deep red, the heat dispersed in messy patches across his neck and cheeks. His eyes were still comically wide, and his body was wound taut like a spring. “Freak out.”
“I’m not freaking out!” Keith blurted, tone loud and splintering at the edges.
“Obviously.”
“Shiro,” Keith whined. He didn't say anything more aloud, but his eyes were practically screaming "help me." And, oh, he was making the face again.
“She’s worried about him,” he looked down at his mug as he spoke, raised it to his lips. Immediately, he made a face— to his dismay, his coffee had gone cold. He set his mug down on the counter with a frown. So much for enjoying a nice, relaxing cup of coffee after dinner.
“Worried, why?” Keith drew him back to the present with his quick response. His posture had completely deflated, all anger having dissipated into genuine concern.
“She says he works too hard. Hardly ever leaves the bakery,” he continued, and Keith’s frown deepened.
“Oh...” he whispered.
“Yeah. She wishes he’d…” Shiro paused, contemplating for a moment. “Take more time for himself.” Keith looked utterly defeated, expression alight with worry. Shiro, on the other hand...
“Why… are you smiling?” Keith accused. He asked the question like he didn’t want to hear the answer. Of course, Shiro provided it anyway.
“I told her we could help,” he said simply.
“We can?” Keith blinked, incredulous.
“Well, I told her you could help,” Shiro reached out a finger and lightly poked Keith in the centre of his chest.
“Me?” Keith choked, staring down at Shiro’s hand in disbelief. “How am I supposed to—”
“Take him out this Saturday,” Shiro cut him off quickly, knowing his brother’s propensity to panic spiral. Keith looked like a boiling kettle, flushed and steaming and ready to—
“WHAT!” he burst. Shiro shrugged, doing his best to feign nonchalance.
“The bakery will be closed. She said Lance should have a free day,” Shiro explained, doing his best to stay casual for the sake of his brother’s quickly fading sanity. “You can help him clear his mind.”
“Why would Lance want to go anywhere with me?” Keith mumbled under his breath. Shiro sighed.
“Do you want to help him?” Keith looked up at him in surprise. His expression was earnest and genuine, making him look like a little kid again.
“Of course I do, but—”
“No buts. Do you want to help him, or not?” At that, Keith’s brows creased, and he flushed a little deeper.
“Yeah…” he averted his eyes, speaking to the fridge instead of Shiro. It didn’t matter, Shiro had what he needed.
“Then trust me.”

I’m sincerely sorry and I promise I’ll stop being salty eventually but real quick I just need to get this out there and vent so like,, does anyone else have a storyline/character arc/plotpoint ect that they truly adored in earlier seasons and then either go nowhere in season 8 or get completely butchered entirely?? cause here are a few of mine personally:
Shiro’s entire character development,, like all of it--and then it gets gutted
Shiro as a gay man being permitted to have deep and meaningful relationships with other men (see also: Shiro and Keith’s entire bond being the most intimate one whether you view it platonically or romantically) and then none of that’s allowed in season 8 suddenly
Allura learning the importance of found family and coming to terms with uniting and forming new familial bonds with others, finding inner peace through reconnecting with Altea and it’s ancient magic, ect--only to have to sacrifice all of it, thus reinforcing the notion that she really had no chance to truly find happiness or new family at all
Keith’s entire overarching character arc also being about found family and then at the end his bond with the person he cared about most is completely cut, as are his ties with the other paladins, and he literally goes off into deep space all alone
the Black Paladins fight, which ends up getting no conclusion--Shiro never talks to Keith about the scar or the I love you; Shiro never actually gets to confront Haggar over taking his arm, cloning him, brainwashing him, ect, no indication of where Operation Kuron and having an army of Shiro’s was supposed to originally go,
Shiro’s trauma and PTSD which gets slowly phased out and goes nowhere,, he’s never given any proper catharsis or closure after years of abuse, torture, and even coming back from the dead
Shiro’s cool floaty arm never being used for like?? anything?? Allura gave her mother’s tiara for him to pull out a little gun instead like really??
the Druids and literally everything about That
Everyone was really into the whole found family thing and at the beginning so many people were just “we can’t possibly leave Allura behind we must save her!!” but then at the end they give her up without a fight and don’t even try too hard to consider the potential of other options

good for the soul ryance hcs
adam is giving the mfe pilots instructions but the second the pretty boy with the blue eyes and bright smile comes out of the pod the world stops
adam: was i clear, cadet?
kinkade: i'm so gay
rizavi, under her breath, offended: wow, bi erasure much?
adam: become a teacher they said, it’ll be fun they said. fuck you, takashi
cue to shiro lightly tapping adam’s shoulder
iverson introduces the paladins and pilots and lance calls kinkade “ryan”
rizavi, being the godsend she is: actually, he’s not comfortable with people calling him-
kinkade, blushing: its okay, really *turning to lance* you can call me ryan
the mfe pilots might be in the middle of an alien war but that had to be at the top 5 of most unbelievable things they've ever seen
leifsdottir: it’s not humanly possible but you just might be blushing about 50 shades of red right now *turning to rizavi* d-did i used the reference right?
rizavi, on the floor: you got it, babygirl
griffin wheezing noises in the background
kinkade goes to visit lance at his hospital room after war is over, lance pretending to be asleep just to see how ryan will deal with his mom alone, his plan backfiring him when the beeping of his heart going into cardiac arrest coming from the machine betrayes him when the word "hero" comes from the other boy's lips
lance goes to shiro with his mayhaps-mayhaps-not boy problems
lance: i thought nothing could scare me anymore, i mean i died and everything but now a pretty boy smiles at me and i feel like i’m gonna be sick
shiro: yOU fUCkING DiEd??!!!?!!?!!
since his talk with shiro almost ended up on him dying, again, lance goes to adam, he doesn’t get that much help but b OI does he has enough material to blackmail shiro now
desperate times call for desperate measures
lance: you have to promise not to tell anyone but... i think ryan likes me...? and i think i like him too...?
keith, stopping halfway his knife trick:
keith: and they say i'm the dense one? jfc its like adam and shiro all over again
lance is telling ryan voltron stories, and ryan it’s a great listener of course, but just objectifies he’s having a hard time believing lance piloted a giant robotic alien lion
lance, before he realizes what he's saying: i could show you around sometime
kinkade, smirking: are you offering me a ride?
lance, after rebooting for the 5th time that night: only if you say yes
spolier alert ahead: he says yes
lance: you'll have to be careful tho, red isn't very-
red’s jaw drops at the sight of kinkade just like everyone else
lance: ...friendly
kinkade, already getting inside: hey, you coming?
lance, staring at the red lion for solid 5 seconds: traitor
dudes pals bros who train together...
kinkade, panting: okay, you might be good at shooting and sparring but i'm sure there's something i'm better at
sponge bob narrator's voice: a few moments later
kinkade, pining lance to the ground: hm, who knew you'd be so bad at hand on hand combat? i win, again
lance, smirking: i got you pinning me down so who's the real winner here
lance asking kinkade for advice because he could listen to him talk forever, and if takes pride he's the only one ryan says more than two words to no one needs to know
lance: nice work out there, sharpshooter
pidge, confused: i thought sharpshooter was your thing?
lance, sighing dreamily watching as ryan walks away: he’s about to be
one day shiro beckons kinkade over after training
kinkade, mocking: is this the part where we have the "you break his heart, i break your neck" talk, commander?
shiro: hmm, i didn't even thought about it but now that you mention it *shiro's arm glow*
one night while doing his perimeter check kinkade bumps into lance stargazing at the garrison's rooftop
lance, smirking: hey, you come here often?
kinkade: umm, we take turns to do our night rounds and i'm in charge of this wing today
lance, after going over the garrison pilots' schedules with hunk and pidge ten thousand times: oh, i didn't knew that
another night kinkade walks into the showers late at night after training, immediately stopping dead on his tracks
someone is s i n g i n g
someone is s i n g i n g in the s h o w e r s
someone is s i n g i n g in s p a n i s h in the s h o w e r s
lance, walking out of the shower: ah! oh, ryan, you scared me! *blushes looking away tightening his altean robe around himself* sorry, i'm still not used to share with so many people after being stuck in space, and i come from a huge family like-wow, okay, i'm rambling again. so, i'm just gonna-
kinkade, turning to take off his shirt, not being able to look at lance in the eye: you have a beautiful voice, lance
*lance.exe has stopped working for so many reasons*
lance beaming when ryan asks him the next day what song he was singing, making his way downtown walking fast and into his room to look for his ancient mp4 where his childhood playlist was intact and giving it to him
lance’s heart screaming in two different languages when ryan asks him to share headphones so lance can translate the songs for him
they try to learn spanish together but both get awfully distracted
lance convinces ryan to do beauty masks with him because, bonding of course, and if he gets to touch the other boy while doing so he won’t complain
kinkade, who has been bullied when little, thrives as lance keeps rambling about how cool his hair is and how beautiful his skin tone is
kinkade: you do know you don't need these, right? or cover up your freckles? or straighten your hair? or pretend you don't use reading glasses?
lance, thanking god the mask won't let his blush show: h-how?
kinkade, quickly looking away: i just like observing people
hunk and ryan become cooking buddies and that’s the law
hunk, leaving the room: and whatever you do, don't let lance lick the spoon
lance, indeed, immediately goes for the spoon
kinkade: lance...
lance, licking the spoon: yes, ryan?
*kinkade.exe has stopped working*
lance knows both the paladins and the mfe would rat him out so literally his only choice is
lance: come on, veronica. i need you to work with me here
veronica: lance, for the last time, my knowledge on the mfe pilots is strictly academic so no, i don't know if kinkade enjoys romcoms, long walks on the beach and deep talks about his future
they're hanging out at lance's old room, with the door open because lance’s mom says so, when ryan finally notices the glow in the dark stars stuck to the ceiling
kinkade, snorting: oh my god. you were that kind of nerd *they both giggle then stay in silence* how was it like? *turns to lance* to see real ones?
lance: if there's something i've learned from space is that everything is more beautiful up close
kinkade, looking at lance: yeah..
its movie night for team garrison/team voltron but certain pair is mia
pidge at the mfe: wait, if lance isn't with you...
rizavi at the paladins: and kinkade isn't with you...
allura, entering the room: has any of you seen the blue lion?
meanwhile on what was left of varadero beach after the war
lance, walking into the water with his jeans rolled up: i've been dying to come here since since i got back, it looks so different, but still so beautiful. i’m glad you accepted to come with me
as if out of a fucking nicholas sparks book, it starts to rain, and fuck if it isn’t perfect because lance looks so fucking happy and ryan is just weak
kinkade, watching as lance dances under the rain: hey, lance? speaking of things we've been dying to do since you got back
lance, turning to him, smiling: yeah?
kinkade takes lance’s hand to pull him in a twirl and finally kissing him, loosing his balance and falling into the water when lance immediately kisses him back
bonus
keith, sitting upside down on the couch playing video games: lance, how do you get a boyfriend?
lance, pausing the game to look at him dead in the eye: keith, my man, the fact i'm dating ryan doesn't mean i have any idea of what the fuck i'm doing

8 Years Old
Lance was having recess outside in the school playground when he saw a group of kids circling around this boy. He noticed how all the students were quiet and very tuned interested in what one of his classmates had to say. He had never seen so many kids listen to someone this way, not even the teachers. Curiosity got the best of him so he trotted his way over to see what was grasping everyone's attention.
When he got close enough to hear the boy said, "And they told me they were gay!" Lance thought to himself. Gay? What does that mean?
Luckily enough another kid seemed to have the same question as him. "What is that? What does gay mean?"
The boy who was sharing this new word look at his classmate and began to explain.
"It's when two boys date, like a girl and a boy, do. But my mom told me it wasn't normal and that it wasn't okay."
Everyone's eyes went wide, they had never heard about two boys dating. Lance had never heard of this either, he doesn't even think much of dating, he's 8.
Before the conversation could continue the teachers started calling out to the students meaning that recess was over and instruction time was going to continue.
As Lance started getting in alphabet order to line up for class, he couldn't help but think about what he just heard.
It isn't natural the boy had said. It's not okay, the boy had continued.
And Lance thought to himself, why is it not?

12 Years Old
Lance was in 6th grade now. While all the other kids went to a regular middle school, he went to attend the Galaxy Garrison. It was a school for those that wanted to be part of the space program.
Lance had always dreamed of becoming a fighter pilot and flying a space ship to Mars.
He got lucky enough to get into the Garrison, but even though it was a school to prepare you to go up into space, you still had to take the same curriculum you would normally take in a typical middle school.
And honestly, Lance appreciated that. He needed a sense of being normal. He needed work that wouldn’t be the same thing constantly and that it wouldn’t bore him. He also needed that sense to fit in with the outside world, and know more than just about space, he wanted to know how to live in the real world and real struggles.
Thinking about struggles, Lance remembered about his crush on Jenny. She was this girl in his grade with blonde hair and green eyes, she had small freckles plastered across her face and she just had the cutest laugh. Lance had gotten small crushes on other girls over the years, but those were ones that went away after a week. Lance had a crush on Jenny since the day he had laid eyes on her, and it hasn’t stopped.
Lance had tried using what his brother Marco had taught him about flirting. He even picked up some of his lines, and he didn’t think they were bad if he said so himself. But this new transition of puberty had started to take a toll on him.
A few weeks back, Lance was at the beach with some of his friends from the Garrison because they decided to head out there before the cold season came. And something about seeing his friends shirtless had really taken Lance aback. He started to stare, but once he realized he was staring, he tried to keep it cool. Just something about seeing them without a shirt sparked something in Lance that he didn’t know was possible. He blames puberty affecting a hormonal behavior onto him.
Now Lance had sort of the same experience in the locker room. He would try not to look at other guys and became rather uncomfortable and dreaded the days they had to change in the locker room. Lance was so scared of someone catching him stare, so Lance had found a solution which was to often stare at the ground and at his own shoes instead of paying attention to the others.
As he was about to finish tying the knot, he felt someone slide onto his bench on the left. He stopped the movement of his fingers and looked up to see who it was. It was a guy named Tim from his math class. They had talked a couple of times but not much, they usually had minimal conversations when training since they only knew each other in that class.
He tried for a smile. “Hey Tim, what’s up?”
Tim smiled, but his smile started to become rather uncomfortable.
“Hey Lance, I just wanted to ask you about something.”
“Sure, what is it?”
Tim’s head faced forward and he pointed at a boy with black hair and pale skin, though Lance could only see him from the back and couldn’t really tell who it was.
“Doesn’t it make you kind of uncomfortable?”
Lance was confused. “What would?”
Tim cleared his throat and looked around awkwardly, “You know…He’s gay and he is in the boys locker room, doesn’t it make you think he might try something?”
Oh my God.
Oh my god.
Lance couldn’t believe he was hearing this. As Lance grew older he had been more exposed to gay people and LGBT+ people in general. He had heard about kids not being accepted just because of who they loved, kids committing suicide, and kids being disowned by their families and rejected by others. He also heard about them being bullied.
Now he can’t believe he was experiencing it directly.
He wanted to tell the kid he is wrong for thinking that, and that he should mind his own business. But he felt like something was preventing him, and he didn’t know what. So instead he just looked at the boy and back at Tim.
“Nah, chill dude, just mind your own business and ignore him and nothing will happen.”
Lance finished tying his shoes and rushed over to the track field, he didn’t want to deal with this bullshit.

Lance had to complete and assignment for English class and it was an argumentative essay. He had to pick topics that would affect many people. So his teacher wanted them to tell her their topics today, or they could submit it in a note. Lance was in his dorm room and started searching for topics on the internet that he could use for his essay.
It was when he came across the LGBT+ section that something started to draw him in.
He looked to both sides of his room and the hallway to make sure no one was around. Once it was clear that no one would catch him, he clicked on the heading.
Doing this made Lance think back to the times he would watch YouTube videos of LGBT+ people. He liked learning about what they were going through and wanted to have somewhat of an understanding of what they go through so that maybe one day if someone needed it. He would have some sort of knowledge of what to expect.
But doing this also reminded Lance of how he would have multiple tabs open to switch tabs in case one of his parents or siblings saw his screen. Since his family mainly knew Spanish, they couldn’t really read what he was doing. But seeing something on a screen they probably would.
Lance hated that he felt like he was doing something wrong, and he was ashamed of it. It’s not that Lance was afraid of his family seeing this. He knew his family was perfectly accepting of everyone. But he couldn’t help but be scared about those few family members that seemed uncomfortable of the idea. He also didn’t want to give them the wrong idea that their son could be gay when he wasn’t.
Thinking back on this made Lance realize that maybe he shouldn’t do his topic on LGBT+ rights. So he exited the page and looked for a different topic.

Space
Over the course of the past few months, things had gone crazy.
To start off, Lance had gotten stuck in space with this blue lion along with Hunk, Pidge, Keith, and Shiro.
Then he saw an alien warship and wormholed to another planet, light years away from Earth.
After that, he met these 2 aliens on a castle ship, and he found out about this whole galactic war that could affect the whole universe.
And to say the least, after now being back on Earth after 5 years of not seeing his family or his home planet. He felt relief.
Well until other problems came up.
The war was over and they had defeated Haggar. The Garrison decided to cover them up with money since they fought and risked their lives to protect Earth.
But now Lance has personal problems.
You see, Lance is a very flirty guy. He had lots of crushes back in the Garrison like Jenny who he got over after a year and many other girls. And on space he flirted with aliens from left to right, being suave was his thing.
But being isolated in space made Lance realize a lot of things. One of them being that he is capable of having heart-wrenching feelings.
Lance knew he was a romantic guy, it was in his blood, but after so many years of flirting with girls and being rejected, he really didn’t think it would get anywhere. Plus they weren’t any major feelings either, so he decided to just keep up the act.
Until he met Princess Allura. Nobody could deny she was beautiful. Her crystal blue and purple eyes were so mesmerizing and her white poofy long hair was gorgeous. And above all she was a Princess that fought day and night in this war.
At first Lance just flirted with her because she was pretty. But then it got serious.
When he saw who Allura was in the inside he was drawn to who she was as a person. Lance started to fall hard.
He thought multiple times that maybe he should tell Allura about his feelings, but he always decided against it. That she probably wouldn’t take him seriously.
Allura found out anyway. The mice snitched. But Allura did not choose Lance in the end. She was after Lotor, and honestly, after a while, Lance realized that was who she was meant to be with, especially after he cleared up his past. They were made for each other.
Moving on was a process, but he managed to get through it. But Lance couldn’t help but think that something played a factor in making the process easier to get by.
Keith.
It was weird for Lance to think that Keith had a role in him moving on faster, but ever since Keith had come back to the team, Lance was taken upon the task of being his right hand and co-leader. So being focused on his missions helped a lot.
Or was it the missions?
Lance was in denial. And he knew it.
Even when Lance was moping over Allura, he had started to realize many things, and it wasn’t until Keith came back that he realized them.
Back when Lance was still a cadet at the Garrison, he had made up this rivalry with Keith. Keith didn’t really know Lance, and Lance knew that Keith never noticed him. But Lance was destined to score higher and to be better than the best pilot in his class.
So he made up this indirect rivalry, that he would talk about endlessly with Hunk. He even swore that he hated Keith.
But then Keith got booted from the Garrison. And honestly, it made Lance upset, but he tried not to show it. He doesn’t exactly know why he was upset, Keith was his rival, the one he swore he hated. He should have been happy that he took Keith’s spot now.
But lucky enough for him he got the chance when they rescued Shiro, and that is when Lance had made it obvious to Keith that he hated him.
Over time in space, Lance tried to let go out the act. He realized it was childish and that maybe instead he should try being Keith’s friend. If there was one thing about Lance it was this feeling he had about comforting others when they need it, and that’s what Lance did when Keith was distraught and stressed about Shiro disappearing.
When Shiro came back, Lance had noticed the one paladin too many issues and decided to talk about it with Keith because he was the current leader.
Or maybe it was because he saw Keith as a friend.
He shrugged it off.
Lance can admit that Keith is not the best person to talk to when you’re feeling down. But Lance still walked out of that room with a surge of emotions.
“And Lance. Leave the math, too Pidge.”
He couldn’t help but smile. Now Lance thought he could do this, he could be Keith’s friend.
But Keith left.
And reflecting on it now, Lance was devastated. He felt a void within him without Keith being there, without someone he can make fun of, without someone he can pick a fight with.
And Lance didn’t want to admit to himself, but he missed Keith.
Seeing Keith again after so many months boosted Lance’s mood, and he felt like he could be himself at the speed of a tick.
Keith rejecting his hug, made Lance sadder then it should have. And when Lance had some time to reflect on all that was happening. He started to question himself.
Do I like Keith?
No, I don’t. I’m straight, I like girls, and have only liked girls all my life.
But what if you do? A voice at the back of his mind said.
And Lance hated it, he started to cry. Ever since he was a kid there was this annoying voice that told Lance he was in denial about his feelings for guys. And no matter how many times Lance told that voice to shut up and assured himself that he only liked girls, it only came back that much faster, making it much harder to escape from it. And here it was again. Haunting him. And Lance didn’t know what to do this time. Could he really be into guys? Could he be into two polar opposite people at the same time?
Lance couldn’t think.

Present
After thinking it through, Lance decided he should talk to Shiro. Taking it into account that the real Shiro was back, Lance knew Shiro might know somewhat of what he was going through.
He knew Shiro has a fiancé back on Earth named Adam. It was no secret in the Garrison that the record-breaking Takashi Shirogane was in love with a man.
So Lance knocked on Shiro’s door, taking in a deep breath. I can do this.
The door opened and Shiro’s eyes went wide in surprise.
“Lance? What brings you here?”
Lance gave him a nervous smile. “Hey Shiro, I hope you’re doing good. I was wondering if we can talk?”
Shiro rose his eyebrows up in surprise but directed Lance over to the couch of his office. Shiro set down some water for the both of them and made himself comfortable on the seat in front of Lance.
“So, what did you want to talk about?”
Anxiety started to kick in and his nerves were alarmed. Lance couldn’t believe he was doing this.
“Shiro I-“ Lance stared at the floor, not wanting to meet Shiro’s eyes.
C’mon Lance, just say it, spit it out.
Say you like guys.
But he couldn’t.
A tear started spilling out of Lance’s eye and his throat was closed up. He felt a weight of emotions on his chest that he wanted to leave but they just couldn’t.
“Woah! Lance! Buddy!” Shiro rushed over to Lance’s side and placed his left arm on Lance’s shoulder and rubbed it. “What’s wrong? Why are you crying? Did something happen?”
He couldn’t take it anymore.
“Shiro, what if…What if I like guys?”
More tears started to fall.
It took a few seconds before Shiro processed this new information, but then he finally found a way to put it into words.
“Is this new for you Lance?”
He nodded.
“Are you scared of your feelings?”
Water started filling up his eyes again, but he tried to hold them back and nodded.
“Do you have a problem with people of the same gender liking each other?”
“No!” Lance sobbed. “I-I don’t really know, I’ve always been accepting of others and I believed in equal rights for everyone and that gays should be happy! And I-I don’t know why…Why I’m so scared of these feelings when it comes to me having them. I’ve always liked girls, only girls, I grew up around people that weren’t accepting of it, even though my own family was accepting of it, I’ve been terrified my whole life, Shiro!”
Shiro tried to speak but Lance cut him off, the words kept vomiting out of his mouth.
“I started looking back on my past life, to see if there were any clues leading up to me feeling this way, and there were so many. I’ve been in denial my whole life because I’ve been so scared of what people would think of me. And I know its stupid and that I shouldn’t give a fuck, but I can’t help but think how uncomfortable others would be around me and I can’t help knowing I’m making someone feel that way because of who I like. This annoying voice in the back of my head keeps haunting me Shiro and I want it to stop! Please! How do I make it stop Shiro? How do I stop being so scared? How do I stop being so scared of my own feelings? I tried everything Shiro, I tried being straight, I tried flirting with girls, I-I made dumb rivalries up. God just, please. What if I go to hell for this?”
Lance couldn’t say any more, he had let it all out. He thinks he even let out about his crush on Keith but he doesn’t care, his feelings are out and he doesn’t know if he feels relieved or scared.
Once Lance settled down Shiro started to talk.
“Listen, Lance. I know this is hard, and not everyone is going to be accepting of this. And everyone accepts themselves at their own time. But you Lance? You’re really strong for keeping this in for so long. You’ve been in denial your whole life, there is no secret about it. But your ways of coping with it weren’t smart. You’ve been supportive and accepting of everyone else, its time you do the same for yourself. You should have just let yourself feel.”
Let yourself feel.
Those words rang in Lance’s head, and he didn’t think he could cry anymore but here he was, breaking down into tears. He hugged Shiro and sobbed on his shoulder. He apologized for being such a mess, but Shiro only supported him.
And suddenly, Lance remembered why he considered Shiro his hero back at the Garrison. He was openly gay and a record-breaking pilot. He was always so brave and owned who he was every single day. And every time Lance had strived to be just like that.
It was only now that Lance found out exactly why he wanted to be like that, and he sobbed even harder.
When Lance stopped crying, he drank some of the water Shiro had given him and tried to clam down.
He looked at Shiro and smiled. He made a good choice talking to Shiro.
“So Lance.”
“Yeah?”
A smirk was forming on Shiro’s face. “So what is this rivalry you made up with someone?”
And Lance couldn’t help but laugh. He began talking about Keith. He felt himself get lighter and lighter as he let this out.
But Lance finally understood now, even if it would take him some time, he knew what he had to do now.
Let yourself feel.

A Mini Voltron Fic
Just a thought I had for the beginning of season 8, what I wish would happen but probably won’t! Still excited for season 8 which I think is coming out in November?
“Most of the paladins should be recovered in a week.” The doctor said smiling softly. Shiro’s shoulders visibly sagged with relief.
Keith had just been released the day before. He and his mother went with to the grave of his father, the visit long overdue. Shiro suggested waiting to do so, since Keith and the paladins had just been through so much, but Keith insisted. Shiro himself had just been released from the hospital a few days before, though he still felt the exhaustion in his bones.
Hunk, Pidge and Lance were still recovering however. Allura was released having some kind of special meeting regarding the machine that nearly destroyed Voltron. Apparently they had wanted to ask her questions regarding the power source, Shiro volunteered to go with her but she declined, saying that he should take this time to recover himself. But Shiro couldn’t sit still, the loss of Adam was clear in his mind, a regret that was too painful to touch just yet. If he sat still… he’d think on it too much. So instead he opted to keep an eye on the recovering paladins.
The doctor continued.
“There is only one we’re concerned about, Lance, he suffered injuries that were more extensive than the others.” She said quietly, looking at the holopad likely with Lance’s medical records on it. The bright screen reflected across her glasses.
“How so?” Shiro asked, trying to keep his voice level.
The doctor looked up at him quizzically and sighed.
“I suppose no one informed you. Lance was injured previously to the battle with Sendak, when he was attempting to get to the Galra base on Earth.” She said stiffly.
“When his comms went out…” Shiro said quietly.
“Yes. When speaking with Veronica, his sister, she informed us that their vehicle had been attacked, nearly exploded in half and the both of them were thrown from it. She already received treatment for her injuries which were luckily not severe. Their suits taking most of the damage...” The doctor paused, “They were both unconscious for several seconds, Lance woke up first and was immediately thrown into a battle while he waited for the Red Lion to appear, which luckily it did. But these factors in combination with what the paladins suffered afterwards… it will make his recovery a bit more difficult.” The doctor sighed.
“What do you mean?” Shiro asked, the shake in his voice a bit more present than before.
The doctor placed a gentle hand on Shiro’s arm, giving a soft squeeze.
“Luckily, Lance has already told us that we are allowed to speak to you regarding his recovery, so we can go into detail. We are doing everything we can and Lance understands the circumstances completely.” She said softly, letting go before tapping at the holopad.
“This is an image of Lance’s brain, taken while he was at the Garrison after a head injury during a flight simulation. It’s several years old but does give us some insight.” The doctor said, turning the holopad so that Shiro could see the scans more clearly.
The image on the screen showed what appeared to be a healthy brain.
“This is an image taken after he was brought in from his lion.”
The image was different, the brain looking crowded in his skull.
“It’s swollen.” Shiro said, swallowing, his throat felt dry.
The doctor nodded, swiping away the images.
“It’s called Cerebral Edema. We believe that he had a concussion when he was thrown from his vehicle which was exasperated by the ensuing battle and fall to Earth. We caught it in time, gave him some medications to help reduce the swelling but it hasn’t performed as we would have liked. Tomorrow we will be making an incision to remove part of his skull to relieve the pressure. Once the swelling goes down, we’ll perform surgery again to replace the missing piece. He’ll be as good as new after that, with the addition of a new scar but he will be perfectly healthy. But what he needs is time, and likely a little bit longer than the rest of the paladins. Maybe three weeks, maybe less, maybe more. Medicine has come a long way, and the other species of alien that have been coming to Earth have helped us immensely with his recovery. But even then time and rest are the best medicine for the body.” She said.
She continued to flip through the records on the holopad and continued.
“He had other injuries as well that need time to heal, several broken ribs, a fractured elbow, bruising on his lower stomach and some mild internal bleeding. Out of all of the paladins he is the most injured. His family has been informed. The procedure will take place tomorrow afternoon, he should begin to feel much better after it’s done.” The doctor said with a smile.
Shiro’s throat still felt dry.
“Okay... Is it alright if I visit him?” Shiro asked.
“Of course, just keep in mind that he is under some intense drugs, his family has already visited and he seemed semi-coherent, but he might be a bit slow.” The doctor said, “My office is right around the corner if you need anything, Captain Shirogane. Lance will be just fine.” She smiled and turned down the hall, her shoes clacking in the empty hallway.
Shiro swallowed and turned to face Lance’s door, his name written under the room number. He hesitated, was it even right to visit him in a time like this? To be honest Shiro hadn’t spent a lot of time with Lance out of all the other paladins. Plus he isn’t even sure what his clone was like during his absence, since he was stuck in the astral plane and all. Given everything that’s happened, they didn’t really have to catch up or get to know each other better. But he still cared for him. He felt so afraid when he when Lance hadn’t been responding, he never wanted anything to happen to him or the other paladins… ever. He was too young, they all were.
Shiro stepped in the room, door sliding closed behind him. Lance was on the bed, tubes strapped to his arm making him look very small. He wore a hospital gown, Shiro saw a hint of bandages under his collar, another wrapped around one of his elbows. Currently Lance wasn’t looking at him, looking instead out of the window. But hearing the sound of the door he turned his head slowly.
Maybe Shiro hadn’t noticed it before, but Lance had dark circles under his eyes. His blue eyes unfocused.
“Hey.” Shiro said gently, walking over to the bed, taking a seat next to it.
“Hey, Shiro.” Lance said, his voice sounding far off.
“How you feeling kiddo?” Shiro asked, placing his hands on the bed.
“Hmmmm... Okay I guess.” Lance said, looking at the ceiling, “The doctors said that I’m getting surgery tomorrow, and that I’ll feel better after that.” Lance said quietly.
“Yeah that’s right, you hit your head pretty hard. The surgery will help your brain stop swelling.” Shiro confirmed.
“Cerebral Edema. Yeah.” Lance said, “I’m a bit nervous though. I’ve never had surgery before.” Lance said, frowning.
For the first time Shiro thought he saw the true Lance, his walls temporarily down because of the drugs. The 17 year old who has experience far more than he should. He should be dating and finishing school, pursuing his dreams and making dumb mistakes. He shouldn’t be in a hospital bed, worrying about the fate of the universe.
If Lance had been more coherent, Shiro is sure he would be laughing it off, telling Shiro that he’d have a cool scar on his head, making him the third paladin to get a scar (after Shiro and Keith) and that everything would be fine. He’d smile away any concern and gush to Shiro about how cool the Atlas was, mindlessly soothing away any of Shiro’s fears and at the same time drawing attention away from himself.
“Hey,” Shiro said, lightly holding Lance’s hand, the one covered in tubes, making sure not to disturb them, “It’ll be okay, these doctors are some of the best at the Garrison.” Shiro said quietly.
Lance nodded, “I know, still nervous though.” A thought seemed to come to his mind and he looked at Shiro intently, “You’re okay right? Do you have family coming to visit you?” Lance asked concerned.
Shiro smiled, how very like Lance.
“I’m okay, exhausted but okay. My family was located yesterday, they’re being flown here. They should be here tomorrow.” Shiro said.
Lance smiled, “Good. You deserve to be happy.” Lance said quietly.
Shiro stared, such a simple statement and yet it felt profound, Lance saying it like it was a fact. Some tears came to Shiro’s eyes. At some point Lance’s fingers had grasped Shiro’s instead of the other way around, not tightly and just barely, but Lance squeezed.
“I know about Adam. I’m sorry.” Lance said, looking at the ceiling still as if knowing that Shiro needed some privacy.
It took a moment for Shiro to say anything.
“How?” Shiro’s voice came out choked, and he noticed tears already streaming down his face. He hated crying.
Lance shrugged.
“You were my hero, I knew a lot about you. I admired you, not only were you one of the youngest pilots to come out of the Garrison but a high ranking, openly gay officer? That was incredibly brave. Not a lot of people knew that you and Adam were together but, Adam was one of my instructors, he taught me a lot, he mentioned you off hand once… he looked very happy. I guess I sort of put two and two together.” Lance stated, “I don’t know what happened before you left for Kerberos. I don’t know what it feels like to lose someone that close to you, so I can’t say I know what you’re going through. But know that you have a lot of people who love you, and care for you. You shouldn’t feel guilty. I didn’t know Adam well... but I think he wouldn’t want you to grieve too long, I think he’d want you to be happy, Shiro.” Lance said quietly. “It’s not your fault.” He whispered.
Shiro was now bent over their clasped hands, Lance squeezing his fingers gently. Shiro’s eyes full of tears that kept streaming down his face, low sobs escaping from his mouth before he could stop them. Lance’s fingers squeezing a steady rhythm into his palm.
“It may take awhile… but I believe you can… you deserve to be happy.” Lance said, and as Shiro looked up he met Lance’s unfocused gaze who smiled gently at him looking tired and worn.
The rest of his visit felt a lot like a therapy session. But eventually Shiro stopped crying, Lance fell into peaceful sleep and Shiro left, his chest feeling a bit lighter than before.
“Cerebral Edema?” Hunk asked, his voice shaking a little bit.
Hunk, Pidge, Shiro and Keith were gathered in Hunk’s room. Pidge being wheeled into it, even though she insisted it wasn’t necessary. Hunk’s room was right next to her’s but nevertheless she was forcibly dropped off by Matt who instructed Shiro to keep an eye on her.
Shiro nodded, “They’re performing surgery tomorrow, to relieve the pressure, part of his skull will be removed and the swelling will eventually go down and then they can put it back. The doctor’s are confident of his recovery, it’ll just take him a bit longer to heal.” Shiro said quietly.
Hunk nodded but seemed to swallow thickly, small tears on the edges of his eyes. Pidge had turned pale in her wheelchair, looking very young. Keith was crossarmed in the corner, mouth in a thin line, staring at the floor.
“How did it happen?” Keith asked quietly. Everyone in the room looking at Shiro.
“The doctors believe that he had a concussion from when we lost communication with him. Apparently according to Veronica, the two of them were attacked on the way to the base and thrown from their vehicle, they both fell unconscious. The doctors believe that his concussion became worse when the lions fell back to Earth.” Shiro said, “I didn’t tell any of you this before, I didn’t want to scare you... but Lance was the only one who was unresponsive when we pulled him from his lion. The rest of you we a bit out of it but you were conscious.” Shiro sighed.
Keith nodded gravely.
“How is he now?” Pidge asked, her fingers turn white against her chair.
“He’s on some pretty heavy drugs, to keep down the swelling, so he’s a bit out of it. But we talked for a bit before he fell asleep, he was pretty coherent. A little nervous about his surgery which is understandable.” Shiro said.
Obviously he didn’t mention how he had sobbed into Lance’s hands just hours before.
Keith stood.
“I think I’ll go sit with him for awhile.” He stated.
“Wait! I’m coming too!” Hunk said, making to sit up.
“Same.” Pidge said, getting ready to wheel her way out.
“Woah. You two need to rest.” Shiro said gently.
Both Hunk and Pidge made to protest before Shiro cut them off.
“No buts. Rest today so you can be a bit better tomorrow, Lance is going to need both of you after his surgery, alright?” Shiro said, putting a soft hand on Pidge’s shoulder.
The two of them considered and grudgingly agreed, Shiro escorting Pidge back to her room. Keith made his way to Lance’s room, but paused outside the door. Shiro noticed, and put a hand on Keith’s shoulder.
“What’s wrong?” Shiro asked quietly.
Keith sighed, “Not really sure Lance will want to see me.” He admitted, hand inches away from the door. “I’ve been such a jerk to him lately, and we haven’t really had the time to fix it.” Keith said.
Shiro sighed, “This is a pretty good way to start. Plus I’m sure Lance doesn’t see it that way.” Shiro said.
“But how do you know?” Keith asked quietly, turning to look at him.
“Cause Lance isn’t that kind of guy.” Shiro said with a soft smile.
It took Keith a moment to smile back, but he did. His hand pressed on the door and it opened with a small swish.
Lance was still in the same position as he was before and appeared to still be asleep. Keith hesitated before walking into the room, walking quietly to the chair that Shiro had occupied just hours before. Keith took in Lance, his eyebrows crinkling in concern as he sat down, placing his clasped hands on the bed. He looked at the monitors, and the IVs his face stern.
Shiro took another chair and sat it next to Keith, the noise despite Shiro’s best efforts to make it quiet, seemed to wake Lance who stirred.
“Hey.” Keith said gently.
Lance blinked and looked around the room, as if he wasn’t entirely sure where the sound was coming from but eventually his eyes landed on the two of them and he smiled.
“Hey, Keith… Shiro.” Lance said softly, his voice still sounding far off.
“How are you feeling buddy?” Keith said, smiling gently. It honestly surprised Shiro how gentle he was being. But he had forgotten that Keith had matured greatly in the last year. But maturity wasn’t something that happened in a year or even several, it was a constant learning experience. Keith was still a hothead, still let his emotions get the better of him on occasion. But in this moment he seemed softer.
“Everyone keeps asking me that.” Lance said, grumbling, “For the last time I feel okay.” He huffed.
Keith chuckled.
“Sorry, but everyone wants to know how you’re doing, we’re all worried about you man.” Keith said genuinely.
Lance huffed out a breath and closed his eyes for a moment before opening them again.
“Well you shouldn’t be, I’m fine. These drugs they gave me kept me from any pain so I feel like I’m floating, also I’m a little dizzy, but someone told me that was normal.” Lance said, “Plus let’s be real no one is worrying about me, you guys should be worrying about yourselves or your families or whatever… I’m fine.” Lance said, the last part coming out in a hurt and grumpy tone, Lance practically pouting as he said it.
Keith looked at Shiro with eyes a bit wider than before and then looked back at Lance, looking concerned, his eyebrows crinkled together.
“Of course we worry about you Lance, why would you think otherwise?” Keith asked quietly.
“I don’t know.” Lance shrugged, seeming equally confused, eyebrows knitting together, “I just do okay? I’ve been lonely… the past few months, since you left with the Blade. It sucked.” Lance said, pouting even more, some small tears at the corner of his eye. He looked away from the two of them quickly, but the action seemed to make him dizzy and he closed his eyes causing the tears to slide down his cheek. He opted instead to stare out the window, seeming to ignore them.
Keith and Shiro didn’t interrupt, but Shiro felt his own stomach sink through the floor.
“I mean Hunk and Pidge are closer than ever. Whenever I hangout with them they’re always talking about stuff that goes way over my head. Making fun of me, you know, whatever… and Allura and I have become closer but… I don’t know, I’ve gotten over the fact that she doesn’t like me, which is fine but now she’s said some really nice things to me and now I’m... confused. Keith I missed you so much, we were really becoming friends and then you just… left like that. And Shiro, well that wasn’t really you was it? But you were an absolute jerk to me like all the time. Like I know it wasn’t you but he had your face so it’s kind of hard to... I had no one to talk to. It’s been… rough.” Lance sighed, closing his eyes, the conversation seeming to drain him, “I mean, I feel a bit better cause I have my family but I… still feel pretty lonely. Like I’m always gonna on the outside or something.” Lance trailed off, seeming to close himself off as if he thought he may have said too much.
Keith and Shiro looked at Lance in utter shock and silence blossomed between them for several moments.
“When did you start feeling this way?” Shiro asked quietly.
Lance shook his head, more tears falling down his face.
“Since the beginning? I don’t know! But it got worse once Keith left…” Lance said his voice quivering, “Ugh. this is so stupid, stupid drugs, stupid head injury. I’m the dumb one after all, I shouldn’t have said anything! Forget it. It’s the drugs talking forget I said anything!” Lance said, roughly wiping his eyes with the hand that was not strapped with IVs.
Something seemed to dawn on Keith, because he grabbed Lance’s hand from his face and held firm.
“You’re not dumb. You’re smart and talented, that space guy was the dumb one for not seeing all the stuff you can do. I’m sorry I’ve been such a complete jerk to you. When you said that stuff about me being the future, I was caught completely off guard and I just said the first this to come out of my mouth. It was stupid and I didn’t realize how much it would hurt you.” Keith said sincerely, Lance sniffling and his eyes red, but he looked at Keith.
“That’s no excuse though. I need to be better, I’m sorry. You’re my family, Lance. I’m sorry, I know I messed up but I’m a bit new… at the whole family thing.” Keith said.
Somehow most of this conversation was going over Shiro’s head, but a small chuckle came from Lance, it was a little wet with tears but the smile was genuine.
“Yeah, you’re not really good at this.” Lance said weakly.
Keith smiled, “I know.”
“I’m a bit scared for my surgery tomorrow.” Lance admitted quietly.
“I’m sure, it’s scary. But were all going to be there when you wake up, okay? You’re family too.” Keith said, squeezing Lance’s hand.
“My Earth family and my space family.” Lance said.
“Yeah.” Keith agreed.
They talked a bit more, about everything and about nothing. Lance slowly fell asleep exhaustion seemed to take him. His hand cradled in Keith’s and the two of them stayed that way for a long time. Shiro watched Lance as he slowly fell into a deep sleep, his hand on Lance’s knee. For the first time in a long time Shiro felt that everything would be okay.

Defender of the Voltron - Keith
Ok for the Keith most of people attack him for leaving the team in s 4, so my main job as official Voltron character lawyer is to defend this crime he commit.
Ahem… Respected shippers, fans or just fan-shippers. As we all know our little baby boy Keith which some of you prefer to call Keiff is attacked by some fans. They stated that he abandoned his friends, and stole some screen time while in the same time forgave his mom for abandoning him.
As we all know Keith is one of the most attractive characters in the show (I had some hots for him too) and he is shipped with most of the characters, also he is known as the most gay-looking character. So why all the hate?
Firstly I found the reason Keith left extremely excusable. You see our dear boy grew up with only his father, knowing that his mother left when he was a baby. He wasn't told that she was dead because Texas Kogane was sure that one day she will return. But as we all know life in the space or even war in space was seen as something controversial in Keith’s childhood so Keith’s father waited for the right time to explain his son what happened to his mother.
Unfortunately that time didn't came. As we all know our hero Mr. Texas Kogane died in terrible accident doing his job by being hero.
Feeling alone and abandoned, young Keith did as many other kids would do in his place. He was angry at the world, by doing it he was even more abandoned by society. His childhood almost ended and who knows what kind of fate would wait this young child if he didn't met Mr. Takashi Shirogane.
Mr. Shirogane saw potential in Keith and took him under his wing creating new figure for Keith, something between father and brother. This was shown by Shiro wearing clothes of Mr. Texas Kogane. As we all know this bond continued through years and Shiro was the only reason Keith even tried to control his teen emotions.
It is not confirmed on screen but my theory is that Keith drop out the Garrison after the Kerberos mission, the proof for this is the fact that Pidge or Miss Katie Holt joined Hunk and Lance after the incident. Knowing how Miss Holts was trying to do everything to find her family we can all assume that Keith completely lost his cool and drop out of school, probably believing that there is more to the story just like Miss Holt.
After drop out Keith sent whole year back in his home; alone, without support, family, without idea what happened to his father/brother figure, without idea why he was abandoned by mother. You have to understand that teens can feel abandoned even after the death of parents, feeling that it was somehow their fault, combining all this facts we can all just wonder how desperate my client was during this one year period. So lonely that he began researching unknown energy.
When he found Mr. Shirogane and joined Voltron Keith slowly began to open to them, not because he wanted but because he didn't have other choice. He had no one on Earth to wait for him. In all this adventure Keith finds out he is and half alien, not just any alien but GALRA!!!The most blood thirsty race of murderers that this universe have seen. This deeply disturbed Keith and damaged his already damaged young mind.
But he didn't let this put him down even after some racial insults from his team.
Anyway at the end of s2 we see Shiro gone, we see how deeply this affect Keith. He is broken, alone again and he can’t cope with the knowledge of losing such important person again, so he desperately looks for him. When he finally found Mr. Shirogane he doesn't ask questions, he is too happy to have him by his side. This happiness was merged with guilt of taking Mr. Shirogane’s place as leader and paladin off black lion. Having already established strong bond with other members of his team he also didn't want to take red lion from his friend Lance. In order to make everything possible Keith does most teen thing and runs away in hope that things will fix themselves, and luckily they do.
Yes this was immature and childish but it was done from pure love and respect toward his team. His love for Mr. Shirogane is also mentioned few times and showed when Keith was ready to do anything to save Kuron just for a chance that Shiro could still be saved. This young man did the right thing, he felt that he wasn't ready, he wanted to help others, he also wanted to help on other parts of the war by joining blades; and he did greats.
The screen time Keith had by my own feeling was perfect. Enough for us to meet him, to understand him and for him to develop from emo teen to fearless leader. It’s not him having too much screen time; it is show runners not having enough time for others characters, because they spent LAST 2 SEASONS ON TOO MANY BACKGROUND CHARACTERS!
Anyway now on his mom. Well we see where he gets his looks. COUGH. As we said Keith is extremely emotional and finding his mom on the mission was shocking, well it would be for most of us. We see that Mrs. Krolia was deeply focused on mission, but we also see that she is just like her son torn between personal feelings and mission.
We know that they spent 2 years on the back of the space whale raising teleporting-space-puppy and having as normal family life as they could. This time helped them to talk and confront the past together, after all many psychologist suggest that it’s best for children to spent some time alone with their parents.
All in all in these two years Keith grew up, he found his mom and he forgave her. It wasn't easy, many years of loneliness on Earth and feeling of abandonment was hard, but the knowledge that Krolia did what she did for the sake of Keith’s life was one of the main reason he forgave her. It wasn't just like that, it was long process and he did it great.
So in conclusion my client climes he is innocent, or that at least his actions were excusable. If you have parent who is not really there most of the time, it’s hard to get to know each other, but if the both sides are willing agreement can be created. In my experience love and sacrifice of our parent to make our life better is what makes us forgive them; there will always be some missing parts but we can live as long we have love.
So respected jury I ask you to look at this boy and see how much success he had in this show, he is not coward, or screen time stealer he is a representation of how every of our 7 favorite characters should do in this show. To have time to change, develop and to show us who they really are so we could relate as much as we can.

My Boy*Friend Lance
i had this on my drafts....*shrugs*
“This is my friend; Lance.”
Shiro snorts, choking on his own spit when his mother slaps the back of his head as a reprimand.
He’s highly almost totally sure that there’s a missing word before the word ‘friend’.
It’s ‘boy’. The word was ‘boy’.
He doesn’t voice any of his thoughts though, not when his mother is giving him a warning look from the side before she looks back at the two sixteen years old before them and smiles sweetly.
“Nice to meet you, Lance.”
The tall but slim brown sixteen years old smiles widely back at her, compliments of her beauty and her house slipping through his lips like a practiced speech, but Shiro gives him points for trying.
He looks behind Lance, where his little brother stands, and shakes his head when he catches the way Keith’s shoulders drop, relief washing down on him and Shiro thinks it’s ridiculous to think that his brother was nervous about him introducing his boy -
Friend*. Right. No ‘boy’ yet.
Shiro sighs internally, lips twitching fondly when he catches the way Keith smiles at the way Lance interacts with his mom and how his eyes soften, never leaving the brunet’s face.
This boy is so far gone.
And so gay.
It’s four in the afternoon on a friday when Keith leaves the house with nothing more than a hurried goodbye that echoes around the walls and picking his house keys hastily on his way out.
It’s ten at night on the same friday when Keith stumbles back home, keys jiggling on his hands as he steps inside and even from his spot on the living room, Shiro can see the goofy dopey smile on his brother’s face, the dimming lighting above him doing nothing to hide the raging blush on his cheeks.
“Fun night?” Shiro calls out, arching an amused eyebrow when Keith jumps on his feet, as if the mere thought of finding someone else alive in the house was ridiculous and unexpected. Rude, Shiro lived here first, thanks.
“Uh, yeah. Yeah, it was...it was fun.” Keith coughs, looking away as he drops his keys on a small bowl near the entrance and rubs the back of his neck.
“Who were you with?” Shiro asks, head tilted to the side in mock innocence.
“With my friend, Lance. You know him.”
Shiro hums, teasing grin growing on his lips. “Ah, yes, Lance, right. Where did you guys go, though? Because you look like a chicken nested on your hair, dude.”
Keith chokes. “Uh, movies.”
‘Makes sense; dark place, loud background noise.’ Shiro thinks with a hum before he speaks up. “Cool, what movie?”
“Uh, Paladin’s Love?”
“Cool, cool. Is it any good? I’ve been meaning to watch it.” Shiro says, dropping his chin on his flesh hand as he gives his entire attention to his brother. His grin grows when Keith shifts nervously.
“Uh, yeh?”
“What is it about?”
“Uh, it’s about a Paladin’s….love?”
“Brillant.” Shiro says, throwing a low whistle in the end and chuckles when Keith glares at him.
“Shut up, Takashi.” Keith says annoyed, flipping him the middle finger as he stomps his way to his room. Shiro waves him off with a smug smile.
“Nice new cologne, by the way!”
“Shut up!!”
“Boys!”
“Sorry, mom!”
There’s giggling.
Shiro arches his neck up, as if the mere simple move will help him get bigger ears for him to hear better the ruckus that’s going on upstairs, most likely coming from his brother’s room.
His science homework lays forgotten on the kitchen’s table, highlighter in the middle of the book as he narrows his eyes and listens.
Yup, more giggling.
“They do know we have thin walls, right?” Shiro mumbles quietly as he purses his lips. His dad hums behind him, still chopping some fresh fruit and placing them on the big bowl next to him.
“Let them be, Kashi.” His dad reminds with amusement, not looking up from his task and leaving once again Shiro to his thoughts.
Shiro counts in his head, waiting for the inevitable that always comes whenever Lance comes over and locks himself in his little brother’s room every time.
Giggling. Giggling. Giggling. Giggl -
“Ack! Dude!”
Yup, there you go: the shouting.
“You started it!”
“I hit you with a goddamn pillow! Not a book!”
“It’s the french book!”
“Oh, I’m sorry? Did the two thousand page hardcover book suddenly turned into a soft french baguette?”
“With enough imagination, yes.”
“You little shi -!”
“Ack! Lance!”
“Is he ever going to tell us, though?” Shiro asks quietly as the shouting continues, lips twitching in amusement  when a second door opens upstairs and then his mom’s scolding echoes around the house, quickly followed by two embarrased teenaged apologies, “I mean, it’s not like it’s a secret.”
“It is for them.” His dad says softly, picking up his cooking tools and placing them over the sink before he turns to his oldest, “Keith will tell us when he’s ready.”
“Pft so he gets to be gay with a boyfriend because he hasn’t ‘officially’ come out to us, but I don’t get to do my memes and embarrassing him like the big brother that I am?” Shiro huffs, leaning back on his chair and throwing his head back, enough to meet his dad’s eyes upside down, “That’s unfair.”
“Well, it’s not about you and your sexuality, son.” His dad chuckles poking him on forehead.
“Well, what if I told you I was bi?” Shiro asks, arching an eyebrow.
“Then congrats, buddy.”
“I’m not bi.” Shiro scoffs before he frowns, “That I know of.”
His dad pats him on the back. “Take your time figuring out.”
Shiro snorts. “Okay, okay, but still, I mean, he knows we doesn’t have to hide it from us, right? We cool with him being gay and having a boyfriend.”
“Your brother approaches things in a different way, Takashi.” His dad reminds him, giving him a small bowl with chunks of strawberries and apples, “Give your brother time, he will come around.”
Shiro opens his mouth to reply but the sound of giggling comes back, even louder than before and Shiro scoffs with a good-heartilly smile.
Alright fine, let the ‘Hide-&-Don’t-Seek-I’m-Gay’ continue.
“Takashi, is this yours?”
Shiro looks up from his laptop, eyebrows furrowed at the clothing in question his dad holds up for him to see.
“Uh, no.” He answers confused, “Where did you find it?”
“I was doing some laundry and found this in the basket.” His dad shrugs, growing at the jacket on hand, “It’s not Keith’s, based on the color scheme so we should throw -”
“No!” Keith shouts, jumping out of nowhere and grabbing the jacket, clutching it close to his chest, “Nop! It’s uh, it’s Lance’s. He left it here last time, so I’m just...gonna put it away. Sorry, dad.”
Their dad blink, more out of surprise at the sudden outburst than anything else. “No problem, son.”
Keith smiles sheepishly before he turns and leaves the room, heading towards his own.
Shiro watches him go in silence. He then snort so loudly that he almost chokes two weeks later, when Lance had been over their house in a total of ten times and his jacket still sits on Keith’s desk.
Are they even trying?
They’re helping their mom with the garden when Shiro notices.
It’s a small blue hair tie, keeping Keith’s ponytail in a tight hold. It’s quite the miracle, when Keith is well known to let his wild mane go at all times.
“What’s with the hair tie?” Shiro asks as he pushes himself back and sits on the back of his knees, pointing at Keith’s hair.
Keith blinks before he blushes, eyes dawning with realization. “Ah, uh, it’s Lance’s.”
“Lance doesn’t have long hair, though.” Shiro says confused.
“He, uh, bought them for me.”
“Such a coincidence they are blue, huh?” Shiro says sneakily, wiggling his eyebrows playfully, “It’s almost as if it was for you to remember him. Wow, such a good friend.”
“Kashi.” Their mom says slow and long, a gentle warning in the back of her voice.
“Shut up, Shiro.” Keith says instead, picking some tiny pebbles from the ground and throwing them at his brother.
They both get grounded when they do more mess than helping on the garden, but worth it.
Shiro’s coming out of the bathroom, hand scratching his stomach over his undershirt lazily before he turns off the light.
He’s barely a foot out when he collides with another body.
Shiro groans, glad that his butt was saved from slamming itself against the cold hard floor but his eyes widen when he catches the figure in front of him.
Lance rubs the side of his head with a small pained pout, only freezing when he finally catches Shiro’s eyes on him.
They stare at each other for a solid minute before Shiro speaks up.
“It’s five in the morning.” He hisses incredulous, missing his prosthetic this time only so he could have two arms to throw in the air to emphasize his exasperation, “What are you doing here?”
“Not cuddles.” Lance answers in a breath, eyes widening before he slaps his own face hard, “I mean, uh, homework? Yeah, homework.”
Shiro blinks, mouth wide open in disbelief before he shakes his head and comforts himself to at least throw his only flesh arm in the air to express himself.
“Unbelievable.”
“Mom, Dad.” Shiro coughs intentionally on the background, making Keith rolls his eyes before he starts over, “Mom, Dad, and Shiro.”
“Yes, sweetheart?” Their mom ask softly, soft gentle smile on her face as she waits for her youngest to continue.
Keith takes a deep breath before he nods to himself and then -
“I’m gay.”
“Hallelujah!”
“Takashi!”
“I’m, like, super proud of you, lil bro.” Shiro says later that day, flopping himself next to Keith on the couch and locking him with his flesh arm, ruffling his hair, “My baby bro is finally out! Thought I was going to grow a beard before you decided to come clean.”
Keith grunts as he wrestle his brother’s hold and huffs when Shiro finally gives him mercy. “Yeah, well, it would have been nice to know you all already knew.”
“Hey, I tried. You’re just slow.”
“Shut up!” Keith laughs, shoving his brother by the arm but there’s this happy at easy smile on his face and Shiro’s chest feels warm at the sight.
“I’m really happy for you, Keith, honestly.” Shiro says softly, squeezing his brother’s shoulder, “And I wasn’t lying earlier, I’m really proud of you.”
“Thank you, Shiro.” Keith mumbles quietly, fingers running through his hair sheepishly as he look away, “It feels like a big weight off my chest, you know? I’m just...really really happy.”
“I can imagine.” Shiro snorts, punching him playfully on the shoulder, “But I noticed you didn’t mention Lance, what gives?”
Keith gives him a weird look. “Why would I mention Lance?”
“You gotta be shitting me.”
It takes another month before it finally comes.
“Mom, Dad.” Shiro coughs on the background, once again, and Keith limits himself to flip him off with his free hand, his other one still holding Lance’s tightly, “Mom, Dad, and Shiro.”
“Yes, son?” Their dad asks kindly, nodding at his youngest as reassurance to continue.
“This is my boyfriend; Lance.”
“Hello.” Lance waves with a happy beaming smile.
Shiro throws his hands in the air and drops to his knees.
“Hallelujah!”
“Takashi!”

THIS FIC HAS A ROLEPLAY BLOG!! Go talk with 3P!Lance!
For a lone wolf, Keith hated loneliness. With a passion.
He learned how to deal with it, yes, he spent quite a long time in exile that he forced himself into. Didn’t mean he had to like it.
News flash: He didn’t.
Not one bit.
News flash: He also had no idea how to solve that.
Childhood? He had no idea how to be social.
Teenager years? He had no idea how to be social.
There was a time he truly believed he would have no idea how to be social in adulthood too.
And he had been okay with that. He was fine with being, as Adam used to say, a “social-weirdo”. He could deal with the loneliness. He had Shiro and Shiro’s weird ass friend and Shiro’s cool fiancée. Keith could deal with it all. He was fine, truly.
Then a boy with blue eyes, loud voice and louder personality appeared. And suddenly Keith wanted to be social.
Only with the boy, but still.
Keith wanted to be social.
(Let that sink in.)
Adam had laughed enough for an entire year the day Keith told him that.
The he gave Keith the very helpful advice of “Take your time, but don’t wait too much. I know that boy; he won’t disregard someone trying to be friendly”, which Keith was glad because he really didn’t want to hear the “just tell him” bullshit he was sure he would’ve gotten with Shiro… Or Shiro’s weird ass friend.
Keith could take his time just fine. The problem was the “not too much” part.
The problem was the glow the blue-eyed boy emitted.
The problem was the shine of his bluest blue eyes.
The problem was the brightness of his smile.
The boy was made of light.
And Keith was a “shadow gremlin”, as Shiro’s weird ass friend used to call him.
Light made him run.
And run he did.
Until they met again. Until the boy—Lance, his name was Lance—shone brightly in front of him once more. And he brought with him the chance of belonging.
Belonging somewhere.
Having a family to call his.
And Keith would be forever grateful for that, no matter how much he would deny if someone asked. He would be forever grateful for Lance.
Falling in love with Lance only made that feeling ten times stronger.
If before he wanted to be social, after he fell—hard, I might add—, he wanted to be a constant in Lance’s life.
And, yes, that maybe sounded a tad creepy, but he couldn’t help himself.
He wanted to be part of Lance’s life just as much as he wanted Lance to be part of his life.
Then Adam’s advice came to bit his butt. “Take your time, but not too much”. He took too long, go figure, and when he was finally ready to confess to Lance those feelings of his, Lance was taken away.
Now, Keith wasn’t a religious person.
(If God existed, Keith wasn’t sure They liked him very much, and the feeling was mutual.)
But if that was how Hell felt like, he could understand why people ran from it their entire lives.
That was something he wished to no one… Other than Haggar. And Zarkon too, but mostly Haggar.
When they found Lance, he was happy, more than happy, he was ecstatic!
Except something screamed at him, something deep within him. And it was screaming “wrong, wrong, wrong” at max volume.
And that something didn’t stop, no, it stayed and it screamed and he was going crazy. It seemed to have a particular dislike for Lance, which was weird… Unless something really was wrong with Lance, which wasn’t the case for Lance had been acting like himself. Sometimes he got that pained look in his eyes, talked aloud with himself, or would lose himself inside his mind for hours to no end, but, hey, you try to survive being kidnapped and experimented on by Haggar and come back without at least some weird mannerisms.
Thankfully, and maybe a bit creepily, Coran noticed how bothered Keith was.
Coran had been acting weirdly around Lance. Still treated him with kindness, but he seemed to keep some distance. It was very, very odd, as Coran saw Lance as his son—there was a debate if Coran saw every one of them as his children and, in Keith’s opinion, Coran saw them more as nieces and nephews than his own kids like he did with Lance and Allura—and would usually be the first to jump in an opportunity to get Lance alone so they could clean the Castle—again—and talk. After they rescued Lance, Coran was hesitant in approaching the boy. And the oddest part is that Lance looked alright with it?
Like he expected and respected Coran’s uneasiness?
Nonetheless, Coran gave Keith help in the form of a book. A book about Galra biology.
Keith had the feeling the man was trying to tell him something.
News flesh: He was right.
Coran gave him a book with a marked page. A marked page about senses and mating.
To say Keith took some time to muster enough courage to read that page is an understatement.
(You can’t just give a book like that to a disaster child, Coran, the quiznack?)
Keith would never admit it, but the book was of great help. Closing it, the Red Paladin sighed. Thinking back to everything that happened, Coran’s question after they told him how they rescued Lance.
“Is that so?” The uneasiness in the man’s voice was subtle, but there. Coran was staring at the Blue Paladin sandwiched between Pidge and Hunk with a faraway look in his face, one hand nervously fidgeting with his mustache.
Keith left the book on his bed, finally understanding that subtlety was not his forte and if he wanted some answers, he would have to ask. With determined steps, he left his room, doing a beeline to Lance’s room. Pieces of the book echoing inside his mind.
“Once a Galra finds a suitable mate, they will develop a sensitivity towards said mate. Their senses will attune with the mate, so the Galra can provide the chosen one with whatever is needed. While it is more common for that to happen to only one or two of their senses, it is not impossible for all five of them to suffer the change. Some Galra have reported some sort of sixth sense, the ability of feeling the energy of their mate, but it’s unclear if it’s something on its own or a result of the mating bond, as it is a mental connection.”
He didn’t need to be a Pidge to understand what that meant. He had recognized Lance as a suitable mate—another thing he wouldn’t admit any time soon—and his senses had attuned with Lance. All five of them, by what he could understand. That said, for his senses to respond to Lance that way, he could think of only two possibilities. One was that there was something very wrong with Lance, wrong enough to bother Keith’s senses and distance Coran. The other was… That Lance, the Lance they had with them, wasn’t their Lance.
Keith didn’t knew which one was scarier. Each brought their own set of problems and their own headache.
With a deep intake of air, Keith knocked on the Blue Paladin’s door.
“Come in.”
Time for the truth.
“Keith?”
“Who are you and where is Lance?”
Okay, maybe he could’ve said something—anything—else, preferably something that didn’t make him sound like a suspicious lunatic, but Keith was well aware of his non-existent people skills, as discussed before. Usually he would let Lance do the talking, seeing as the Cuban boy could easily control a conversation and had a better understanding of people, emotions and social cues.
Anyways, Keith already expected Lance to react strongly to his curiosity, even more after how he worded it, but he didn’t expect for the boy to sigh silently and close his eyes.
Wait, did it mean he was right and that boy wasn’t his Lance?
“Galra senses, he did alert me about them.” Lance looked at him with hollow eyes. “Shit down, Keith—”he gestured to the bed he’d been sitting on even before the Red Paladin came in—“I’ll explain everything.”
“So, you’re a clone made by Haggar from Lance’s hand that she cut off?”
“Yes.”
“And you’re connected to him because of that?”
“Somewhat.”
“Lance is with Haggar, who thinks he’s her son and is training him to be a weapon for the Empire?”
“Yes, well. She used the whole “son” thing to make Lance loyal to her, but by what he told me, she’s being swallowed by her own lie.”
“He’s planning on bringing the Empire down from the inside by gaining Haggar’s loyalty, killing Zarkon and taking his place so there won’t be a lack of power that could bring someone just as bad?”
“Yes.”
“And he told you to stay here with us?”
“Yes. I was supposed to be programmed by Haggar to destroy Voltron, but the danger of making a perfect clone is that it will act the way the original would.”
“You’re not acting like Lance.”
“I am not Lance.”
Silence, heavy and deafening.
“I will understand if you feel the need to beat me, Keith. In fact, please, go ahead.”
Keith choked on the air going to his lungs. How could that boy—that thing ask that?! Didn’t it have instincts or something? Was it out of its mind?
“It’s hard, you know. Because I’m not him, and you guys love me as if I was and I want the love, I truly do, but… But I’m not him. I want the be loved for me. I want the laughs and the smiles and the affection to be directed at me, not at Lance.”
Tears were running on its cheeks. Keith’s heart clenched. No matter what it was, that face was still Lance’s and wasn’t suited for anything that wasn’t satisfaction and happiness. Don’t get him wrong, it was still beautiful with the trails left by the salty water and the dark blue of bluest blue, but it didn’t feel right. It didn’t feel right.
It wasn’t right.
“But Lance promised me, he promised me I would be free to be. To be whoever and whatever I wanted. And I’ll do anything for that to happen. So please, Keith, please don’t tell them!” Begging, it was begging. “Please, let Lance work his plans! Please let me keep this hope!”
The clone startled when Keith’s fist hit the mattress near it.
Damn it, Keith wanted to punch something.
Getting up hastily, the Red Paladin hurried to leave the room, but stopped at the entrance. If the situation was different, if things were different, he would’ve stayed and dried the tears, hugged the fears, soothed the pain. He would’ve done everything and then some more for his Lance, but that wasn’t his Lance.
“I won’t tell them yet because I trust Lance and his plans.” In and out, slow calming breaths. “But if you do anything that I don’t like, I won’t hesitate to throw you into an airlock.”
“Understood.” Too soft, its—his voice was too soft. Too damn soft.
But it wasn’t his Lance’s voice. It didn’t make his heart go crazy or a whole zoo run a marathon inside his chest.
“You’re not the one I’m going to beat up.”
With that he left, promising himself to punch Lance—his Lance, the real Lance, the one his heart adored—as soon as possible.
And maybe kiss the Cuban while he was at it.
