You know, I wonder if the Candy Queen was so romantically obsessed with the Winter King just because it's literally Ice King's madness shoved into her brain and Romantic Obsession is kinda his thing.
Or if it’s at least partially fueled by some subconscious understanding of what was done to her, which is why she seem to be a lot more personally obsessed with just the Winter King than Ice King was with his favorite Princess.
Since you know, she was kinda right, she and the Winter King do kinda belong together. They complete each other. She because she has his missing piece.
His missing madness.

Marceline in Winter King's universe is probably dead. It's mentioned in stakes that Marceline started fighting vampires to save Simon from them, so if Simon was never captured by the vampires, she probably never got in contact with them, stayed half human and died sometime during the 100 years. Thats how he got her axe.

The thing about The Candy Queen that’s really grinding my gears in particular is how all her machinations that we see still involve science.
Like she’s not drowning people in fudge or turning them into cotton candy like Ice King using his magic. She’s built a giant mixer. Her flying machine is powered by a treadmill. Her instrument of choice is a portable keyboard.
Bonnibel’s scientific principles are still there and you can just picture her, even while cursed and bonkers, trying to use her greatest asset. Her brilliance being dampened Harrison Bergeron style and inevitably being warped but still being there! Simon was right! She’s still brilliant!

I guess the funny thing is, people used to simplify Adventure Time Plot into, like, ‘let’s save Princess Bubblegum from the Ice King!’ But that was really only the plot of the Pilot. I mean, Princess Bubblegum was established fairly early on as Ice King’s favorite kidnapping victim. But that with the Pilot kinda establishing it as the Default Adventure Time Premise.. that kinda established it as being too generic to spend a whole episode on that.
So we’ve had a few episodes where Princess Bubblegum needed to be saved
And a few episodes where they needed to save a Princess from Ice King
And usually ‘saving Princess Bubblegum from the Ice King’ has been used more like a minor plot point rather than the main focus of an episode
Or the subject of variations and parodies. I mean, we kinda got ‘saving Ice King from Princess Bubblegum’ before Season 1 ended!
The only episodes that would kinda count for that is ‘Ricardio the Heart Guy’ (saving Princess Bubblegum from Ice King’s organ), ‘Wizard Battle’ (which was really more about Finn’s jealousy than actually saving PB), ‘Princess Monster Wife’ (Peebles was one of multiple princesses victimized by IK, and it’s not like she was saved by the Protagonists actions) and ‘A Glitch is a Glitch’ (non-canon, and PB really kinda took care of herself in that regard)
But then it turns out, “The Winter King”, despite originally playing itself up as a role-reversal
Was actually the most straightforward ‘Saving the Princess Bubblegum from the Ice King’ storyline since the Pilot.
