Supercorptober 2022 Day 5: Orange

The smell of sunshine in liquid form hits Alex as soon as she enters Kara's apartment. "Fresh orange juice? Don't mind if I do," she says as she swipes a glass from the counter, ignoring Kara's protests. Alex lets out an exaggerated sound after she's downed half the glass (orange juice definitely tastes better hand-squeezed - especially by someone else).

"I'm surprised you're up this early," she says as she settles on a stool. The clock behind Kara's pouting face ticks just past 7 am but it looks like her sister's been up far longer.

Kara just shrugs and starts rolling another orange to prepare for squeezing. Alex mirrors her shrug and picks up another one, blinks in surprise. "These are heavy." Her eyes narrow. "And warm. Did you-?"

"That farmer I was talking about always has extra this time of year."

"And by 'that farmer' you're talking about the one in Valencia - Valencia, Spain?"

Kara just rolls her eyes and reapplies herself to the task of juicing. Alex hasn't seen her do this since they were younger, how it was one of the many varied things that her family had come up with to help Kara with her strength and to introduce her gently to new things. Nowadays, she knows that Kara only does this when she has time, when there's something to celebrate…

Alex takes another look at her sister, noting the ease in Kara’s posture yet the slightly flustered look on her face as she palms the orange. "What's the occasion?" Alex asks, casually taking another sip of her orange juice while she carefully watches Kara’s reaction.

She needn't be so careful: Kara’s face flushes bright red. "Nothing," she sputters.

Alex raises an eyebrow. "Tell that to your orange." Kara looks down and groans as she notes the mess on the counter, having squeezed a little too hard.

"Kara, have you seen my pants? I seem to remember you throwing them down the hall but I can't find -"

Orange juice doesn’t taste nearly as good coming up one's nose, a part of Alex’s brain thinks idly as she takes in Lena’s half-dressed state. Through the burning in her eyes, Alex glances between Lena and Kara, back again, noting the blushes on both of them and the marks on the former. Then her eyes go to the orange in Kara’s hand - then down to the orange juice in her glass and now running down her shirt. That kind of occasion.

"Serves you right barging in unannounced," Kara grumbles as she throws a hand towel at Alex.

supercorp is literally the hellishest of the cw shows like. actually evil. why the fuck did we get basically nazi kara in a special instead of?????? idk??? ANYTHING ELSE?

supergirl is like a special hell created for gays who see Katie and Mel look at each other kindly and want that for themselves.

how was 70% of that show just. beyond bad? i cant even classify things as out of character because were these characters ever in character????

I'm assuming you meant Supergirl* as the first word there? (totally reasonable slip btw lmao)

But it sure is! Impressively bad! Any themes that might be drawn out from an honest engagement with the text boil down to ideas that are either genuinely childish or just straight up reactionary. And I get it, that's what happens when you try to make tv with some duct tape and a $20 that you found at the bottom of your backpack, but it really is amazing what the entertainment industry shits out to justify its continued existence.

It's even possible to make a "bad" work that is still ultimately entertaining because it leans into its own cheapness, it goes full camp, it gives its creative minds room to breathe, but SG doesn't even manage that. It brushes up against that sometimes, like "are these his nipples?", like Alex and Jonn having actual fun being their characters for the first time in years bc they were hopped up on Bravery Juice or whatever the fuck was happening, like Lex doing a little dance number in the Fortress. These moments are almost all the more heartbreaking because they're a window into a series that was still cheap, was still generally bad, but was ultimately FUN.

COMICS, MAYBE??? CHEAP BAD AND FUN SOUNDS A LOT LIKE COMICS!!

I can't imagine finding anything to enjoy here if it weren't for the whole "two of our actors have so much chemistry it's leaking all over the show" thing. There's just so little worth saving.

We've heard this song and seen this dance before

With season 2 of Wednesday confirmed, and all the promo interviews being said, older sapphic fans are hearing the beginnings of a tune and dance we've seen before. "Not writing out the possibility of (x female ship)" all the while giving more promo to the het ship; personally reminding me of Supergirl using queer fans for views all the while having a good majority of air time be spent dragging Lena and Kara's relationship through the ringer. And yet despite that, Supercorp fans who were there from the start managing to keep creating wonderful works of fanart to keep the ship alive, despite the show itself desperately trying to make heterosexual relationships the ship(s) to "root" for despite the people making the show knowing people wanted the sapphic ship over a hetero ship. Wednesday and Enid's relationship may follow along like Kara and Lena's or maybe in an unexpected twist Netflix allows the showrunners to make it happen; regardless I think that as long as fans don't let questionable decisions about the show and their characters kill the want to create fan-works for WenClair, Wenclair shippers and the ship will be fine. (once again look at Supercorp as an example, it might not have been canon, but the fan-works are still happening, and it's hard to deny how close Lena and Kara were at the end of the series.) Canon may be one thing, but it's not like Fanon is less valid now a days. So whatever is headed towards Sapphic Wednesday fans, keep creating that good sapphic juice.

Your 100 days of fanfic is v v cute!!! Any interest in something kidfic-related for Supercorp? Like Lena and Kara hearing their baby's first words perhaps? Thanks!

She doesn’t really consider herself much of a mother. After all, the maternal figures she had to look up to growing up were few and far between. (A nanny there, a teacher here…so it goes.) And yet, her daughter’s curious blue eyes stir something deep inside of her, and it sort of feels like she’s been doing this her whole life, even if chopping up fruit was never something she imagined for herself.

“I swear I heard her say Mom,” Kara says, breaking Lena out of her thoughts. She smiles, because Kara swears up and down every week that their daughter has spoken her first word, and hasn’t been right yet.

“Are you sure it just wasn’t her normal noises when she likes whatever she’s eating?”

“Like yum? No. It was mom. Moooommm.” Kara crosses her arms over her chest, looking at Lena a little petulantly. “I want her first word to be Mom.”

“I mean, I don’t know what else it would be. She has two moms.”

“Mommy. But I’m mommy. And I want you to be Mom.”

Lena laughs, turning her head to watch their daughter play with some colorful toys Kara had snuck in last week, even after Lena had said no more toys. “Any particular reason why?”

“No, none,” Kara answers with faux innocence. “Just that if she recognizes you as mom first, maybe you’ll stop thinking this is all a dream.”

It’s said jokingly, but there’s more than a little truth to the statement, and not for the first time Lena wonders how Kara got to know her so well. “It’s a mighty good dream though.”

Kara smirks and lets the topic drop. “Maybe we should revisit that one dream you had, remember, I think it involved me and a shower—”

Lena’s face burns bright, the knife slips, and she feels a sting on her finger where fruit juices begin to seep into her freshly sliced flesh. “Oh shit,” she mumbles, grabbing a towel and wrapping it around her bloody finger.

Then, from across the room, what Kara has been hoping for finally happens: “Oh shit, Mom.”

They pause, then Kara turns to Lena with a huge grin. “Do you see that? She’s a prodigy!”

Hmm, I'd put Kara as Andy no matter what way the story goes. I think Sam would make an excellent Nile. The Quynh storyline can be kept or lifted out, if left in I'd actually have her be Astra, with a familial connection instead (Astra would be the one who sensed/found Kara). And Lena...I'd cast her in Copley's role tbh, with a few tweaks. Which would deliver a lot of angst with the whole immortal/mortal romance (which...is canon anyways right?) to be later resolved in a deus ex machina probably LOL. She'd also be a lot more involved with the storyline, since Lex would be Merrick. Brainy and Nia are obviously Nicky and Joe. Booker is a hard one. For max angst for Kara, Alex would be Booker, otherwise...James maybe? Poor J'onn is the immortal who died in the flashback.

This is all very interesting and I wouldn't automatically say NO to reading it, but.... an Old Guard story in which Lena is not an immortal doesn't get my juices flowing.

Partly bc we already get the immortal/mortal supercorp dynamic in canon, technically, if we extrapolate to the future.

But also partly bc Lena as an immortal is just so delicious.

Reflection

Tbh I hadn't planned on participating but two days in, I figured why not - I wanted to get some writing in and had wanted to practice writing Supercorp anyway.

I thought most of them would be visuals like Day 1: summer and the text messages for Day 19: suit and Day 27: October but I guess the writer genes couldn’t help but shine through lol

Ones that had me cackling or just generally had a ton of fun writing

3: drunk (I've always loved trying to tell a story by inference; plus, I always believed that Lena would've figured out Kara's identity as Supergirl on her own dangit)

5: Orange (this was definitely not what I’d imagined at first for this prompt but once I started, I just couldn’t stop lol - I think the thing that drove me was picturing Alex's face when she realizes what happened)

7: night (in the same vein as 3, I've always loved looking at different "forms" of story - as in, where are places that a story could be told/how might we tell a story without writing a normal narrative? Once my brain went to "night shift," this whole thing just kinda came out and I had way too much fun)

19: Suit (so I was thinking about this fantastic piece of art by PapurrCat and was thinking about what Lena would do to get Kara in something similar and voila, this thing happened lol)

22: skull (I started out really unsure what to do with this prompt, but once I pictured Kara and Lena in a Hogwarts-esque situation and Kara pestering Lena while she was trying to study, I just couldn't stop. I'm still amused that there’s a font called “Rage Italic” lol, I couldn’t not use it for Lena)

27: October (tbh I was quite amazed to learn about all the different holidays/observations!)

29: bonfire (once I settled on the form for this, ideas just kept coming - I actually had to rein myself in because I hadn't put any Supercorp into it and already had over a dozen bullet points in my draft lol)

Ones that took me by surprise

9: fresh (this was part of a larger idea I already had in my head but tbh, I was shy about writing it because of the nsfw nature of it - I was glad that this exercise gave me the kick in the pants to just write it without thinking too hard about it or being too critical - and I rather like what came out of it!)

15: warmth (this one had me emotional as I was writing, actually, I didn't expect to go in this direction until it just started pouring out)

16: sparks (this one spilled out whole cloth and I was surprised that it veered towards action as I'm not very confident in my abilities to write that genre; tbh I'm tempted to flesh this out more into its own fic now)

17: cafe (this was another one that surprisingly came out whole cloth. Tbh I think I could've done better with the voicing - I very rarely write in 2nd POV as it is - but as I was rereading it just now I was like, it's not that bad? lol)

21: broken (I had fully expected to write something angsty or have a visual but this came out of left field; dialogue's not my forte, but I tried)

31: spookycorp (I was on a time crunch with this one and I struggled in figuring out my approach - I had thrown out 3 different openings for 3 completely different fics, and then as I was writing the fourth, I could suddenly see the whole thing, which became this one. I think I mentioned above somewhere that I don't really write action, and I definitely don't write horror, but it was a really nice opportunity to practice and I think it came out decent!)

Ones that I grew to love

10: ice (I've always liked the idea of a third-party observer -especially using bartenders as said observer- mostly because it offers an opportunity to take liberties with watching minute details of character interactions and reactions lol; but I like the idea of folks being inspired by the work Kara and Lena put in to reconcile and rebuild their relationship yknow?)

11: forest (I'd hoped to do a visual fic with the map but it just wasn't coming out the way I wanted, which forced me to write a fic to go along with it. The words came together surprisingly easily, especially the tone - kinda want to explore this AU more!)

14: soaring (this was another existing idea that I had where Lena learns about her magic through experimentation - in my head, she feels safe practicing because she knows Kara and the others will get her out of any unexpectedness that may happen, as is the case in this one. I also enjoyed trying to be subtle about what happened by dropping indirect hints)

20: Kara/24: Lena (another "form" that I've found amusing is the idea of seeing one's answers but not the questions - I ended up doing some planning for these ones, actually! And it was fun to reference other stuff like fics I’ve loved)

25: comfy (this one came out whole cloth and wholly unexpected, and it's probably my favorite of this whole set. Similar to 14, I wanted the situation to make itself known slowly and tried to put myself in young Lena's shoes for a bit, which, honestly, broke my heart a bit. I'm tempted to expand this by having more of an exposition and maybe tweaking the ending conversation as well. All in all, I was really happy with the tone and the emotions here, as well as the concept of "becoming the hero we needed when we were young" with regard to childhood trauma.)

The ones I had the hardest time with or wasn't super happy with were either a) I didn't have a lot of time that day (13: peace, 28: holiday), b) I was stumped with the prompt (26: acorn, 30: spell), or c) I had an idea but couldn't execute it the way I wanted to (8: rain, 12: evening, 18: secret).

That said, proud of myself for getting something out for all 31 prompts! It was motivating to see other folks in the same boat also doing their best, and it was fun to see what everyone came up with.

Overall really enjoyed doing this - thanks again to @kmsdraws for the prompt list and everyone who stopped by to check my stuff out!
