FINAL FIGHT
The Asanos (Assassination Classroom) VS the Zoldycks (Hunter X Hunter)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Asanos
Members: Gakuhou Asano (father) and Gakushuu Asano (son)
Propaganda:
CW: physical abuse
"Crazy dad whose misguided goal is just to make his son strong (but whose definition of real strength leaves much to be desired), and son who does see the error in his dad's ways but is brainwashed enough to imagine that his "filial duty" under the circumstances is to "take control". No one knows for sure if a mom exists, but she clearly doesn't want to have much to do with these lunatics." "The dad doesn't even consider his son family, just a "student" as he is a principal. Utterly unhumane conditions is where he trains his son in. And worst of all, they compete on who will control the other, leash included. The first time the son even considers calling him father is when he literally abuses him physically."
The Zoldycks
Members: Zeno, Silva, Kikyo, Illumi, Milluki, Killua, Alluka, Kalluto
Propaganda:
CW: murder, torture, isolation
"What ISN'T dysfunctional about them? A family of assassins, they train all their children to be killers, including with literal torture. Killua is the one of the family who's a main character, the heir of the family, and he eventually runs away due to the dysfunctionality. All the kids are isolated, told they don't deserve friendship, and they all have different opinions on family matters but it affects them all! Illumi wants to control Killua to as extreme a degree as he possibly can, and even though Silva lets Killua leave, he fully expects him to return home and join the family business again, and both him and Zeno knew about Illumi's extreme methods of control." Note: edited for length, full submission here

Words cannot describe how much I love this scene. (and I'm kinda bitter about how the 2011 anime changed its undertones)
At first, Kalluto has only this blank, doll-like expression and stays still like an accessory of his mother, but when she turns around and leaves him behind, he lets this mask slip for a brief second. Just little things — furrowed eyebrows and slightly widened eyes, but they show so much personality. So many emotions and repressed feelings. So much pure hatred for people that — in his understanding — want to take Killua away and hurt his family.

It's like hxh characters finding out that's hxh Isa series or movie in the real world, a different world. Which means they have actors. So they're reacting to their actors interview lol
I couldn’t find a way to work in a (y/n) character since a reader insert would depend a lot on the reader’s feelings for something like this. This isn’t a story, after all, I don’t feel right dictating how someone would react to the discovery of being a show character, y’know? So, I left a slot open for reader interpretation! An interactive post, lol.
Otherwise, I just kinda went ham with your general set up. It was kinda hard for me to think if I stuck so close to your exact premise. Hope ya don’t mind!
@coolminahi
In general
In general, the revelation of the show being...a show, would throw the entire cast for a loop. I’ll mention some highlights, but as a whole, the revelation would be something along the lines of existential fear, confusion, and maybe some amazement.
Hisoka
Hisoka is about the only one I can think of who doesn’t have a group, and Kite is just a random character I like, lol. So, they get their own bits. Plus, their fairly simple. Hisoka’s biggest throw off is his actor not having pink hair slicked back like his. The fact their personalities don’t match or his actor doesn’t condone his taste for powerful fighters of any age doesn’t bug him. He can understand that he’s not for everyone.
The phantom troupe
Chrollo has experienced so many powers, and read so many books that he wouldn’t exactly care for the fact his reality is false. Though, he would be offended if his actor is anything but intellegent and appreciative of his reading and grace. Uvogin, though, would have his mind utterly blown. If his physique isn’t realistic to his actor, he’s crushed, and if it is, he would wonder if his actor is a good fighter. If so...could they spar? Feitan meanwhile would lowkey hate his actor if he denounced his torturous tastes. “How can he talk about me like that?! He’s no better than me!” that type of logic. In all, though, the spiders would mostly be confused on how this works. How can Macha or Phinks’ actors be such sweeties? How are they seperate from the characters? How are they different from the actors?
The zoldycks
Where the spiders may ponder the existential angle, the Zoldycks are more worried about the opinions of their actors, and the accuracy of their portrayal. Kikyo would have a fit over the smallest shift in what she believes she’d do, or any harsh comment levelled at her or her babies in interviews, Milluki would complain that his actor isn’t thinner, insulting the man viciously while also picking apart the effects of the show. Alluka would simply find it fun to have an actor, and be called adorable in interviews, while Killua would be annoyed and confused if his actor wasn’t his age. “why the hell is my actor 18?? I’m only 12, how can they opt for hours of make up to de-age him, when they can just hire a twelve year old??”
Illumi would not like the fact their reality is a show. He instantly dislikes his actor, he dislikes how easy going he might be, or him laughing off marriage proposals. He doesn’t like to think about interviews and how this affects him, mostly because of his actor and how different they are. “He’s so emotional and takes nothing serious. I hate how weak he is.” Every one but Killua would probably also be offended at them not bothering to try and match their strength either.
Silva and Zeno would be the only two really pondering what this means for their world. When the story ends, do they cease to exist? If the show is cancelled, what happens then? Those types of questions. Though, Zeno does at least appreciate the work that goes into aging his actor.
The main cast
Gon would be ecstatic to see they’re a show. He’d think it was so cool, and he’d hope all of his friends got good screen time, and were loved by the fans. He would think of the implications, but he’d try not to fret over them. Kurapika, meanwhile, would feel highkey cheated by god. “My family was wiped out...for a mere plot?!” While Leorio wouldn’t know how to feel. His actor seems cool, he seems fun in all of his interviews, but...does this mean he’s not real? Complicated emotions there.
[reader insert]
Readers choice, lol. Feel free to repost or comment how you’d react to this news if you want!

One of my favorite characters in HxH is Alluka. And you wanna know what I love about the way HxH handles Alluka being trans?
We know that Alluka is a girl because the only people that don't refer to her as such are the antagonists: the other Zoldycks. They don't see Alluka as family (barely see her as human), they don't respect her or care about her so of course they would misgender her.
Meanwhile Killua, who loves Alluka, who knows her better than anyone else in their family, calls her a girl.
Basically, we know that Killua is right in calling Alluka a girl because he's the protagonist, and also the only one who treats Alluka like a human. And we know the Zoldycks are wrong in calling Alluka a boy because they're the antagonists who treat Alluka like an inhuman monster.

Behold our winners!
Tumblr media
In third place, the Ushiromiya family, from Umineko When They Cry!
In second place, the Zoldycks from Hunter x Hunter!
And our first place winners are the Asanos, from Assassination Classroom!
Congratulations to Gakuhou and Gakushuu Asano for being voted the most dysfunctional family! With only two inital submissions and not being the main characters of their media, these two may have been underestimated but in round after round, they kept going, beating a series of popular oponents and larger families. Their dysfunction strikes a chord in many people, winning a place in their heart and on the podium.
This tournament has made these past four months a little more interesting for me, and I hope for all of you as well! It wouldn't have been the same without all of your engagement. I had a delightful time reading your comments, reblogs, and messages. Thank you for submitting, voting, writing propaganda, and being part of this wild ride.

I like to think that Zoldycks act like a fairly normal family. But there are also the tortures.
In a way, I think it would be even more fucked up — one day your mom tucks you into bed and reads you bedtime stories, and the next one, she electrocutes you because you didn't kill your target fast enough...
Moreover, it would be effective in building loyalty, based not simply on fear, but on twisted, yet familial love.

How would the zoodycks react to Killua's "sibling"? Would their reaction change if darling is younger, older or the same age as Killua?
Younger
The Zoldyck family is...a mixed bag of reactions. With one variable being the time of when the plot takes place.
Alluka, Milluki, and Zeno wouldn't care very much about Killua adopting a new sibling. Milluki only wants to do his own thing, he doesn't really care if Killua is around or off with Gon, so he wouldn't personally care. Only beginning to if his parents do. Kalluto might be a tad jealous, but otherwise would just freeze the new friend out. Zeno meanwhile just wants Killua to live a good life and make the family proud, so he wouldn't mind the new addition, and Alluka obviously just wants Killua happy.
Illumi is the sibling most likely to become an issue.
He'd take a look at this new 'sibling' and be a bit hostile, but alost the most willing to accept them. After all, he's a big brother, he can't help the desire to care for younger people he's told are his family. Even if that only extends to 'they're like a sibling to me'. But, that wouldn't stop him from putting a needle in the child to make sure they prove no threat to themselves or Killua.
Silva and Killua's mother though, are far more likely to take an issue with the addition of any 'sibling'. Kikyo would be the least hostile though, just sort of offended at first, but quick to warm up to a new person to baby and dote on. Though, her and Silva are on the same page when it comes to one thing. If Killua wants his new 'sibling' to have the same protection he does, or be accepted fully, they'd need to train.
All around, Killua wouldn't be keen to introduce his friend to his family if they were younger than him.
Same age
The Zoldycks would have a far more ambivilent stance to a new 'sibling' at the age of Killua. Silva wouldn't care, and kikyo would be the main one to encourage this friendship in hopes that her beloved baby could get an easy future spouse. The siblings would be intrigued a bit, but not give the new friend much mind. Gon proved himself to be a headache enough for them to care, but Killua isn't about to let his new friend do that.
Illumi is once again the biggest hurdle for Killua's friend meeting his entire family. After all, the man took a look at Gon and tried to kill him, but might slowly be learning to curb his hostility at Killua's friends. So, it's a bit of a coin flip.
Killua would at least slowly introduce this new 'sibling' to his family as time went on. Being the same age as him is the best dynamic for this to go well.
Older
Any new 'sibling' being older than Killua starts to make the Zoldycks uncomfortable. They might be too old to be properly trained for assassination, and Milluki wouldn't be shy about implying they're a creep for being friends with a younger person, no matter the age gap. Alluka would take pretty well to them, but Kalluto would be far more skittish. Illumi, meanwhile, would be anywhere from directly and brutally hostile, to ruthlessly petty, snide, and sort of catty. He is the eldest, he wouldn't take kindly to some 'adopted' person risking surpassing him.
Silva would be a bit more mindful of Killua having an older friend, as would Kikyo for the same reason. But where Silva might consider betrothing you to Killua if you were strong enough, Kikyo would angle far more for you to be betrothed to Illumi if ou were strong. After all, no one could be worthy of her darling baby, and Illumi is the one who has to carry on the strength to the next generation, head of the family or not.
Killua might introduce you to a sibling or two off handedly, but he'd lowkey regret it in the end when the news spreads.
