Deltarune Doodles
I havn't been posting twitter stuff over here on tumblr, this is all of @akanemnon twinrunes stuff - I got inspired by their designs for Dess, both the Deltarune one and Undertale one, and sort of did a bunch of my own stuff
I honestly hope Akanemon considers a sort of parralel plot with them, since the idea that Undertale Dess and Noelle could go through something like Deltarune Dess and Noelle did is kino, especially if Kris and Flowey are there as well - It has lots of potential as an idea, like Akane could really run with True Labs having a Dark World section and going "ooh time is a flat circle and Kris has to deal with today being THAT day - the day the bunker was opened - and everything that happened before is happening AGAIN because he just HAD to exist in Undertale", it could honestly be suspenseful having Kris essentially having a mental meltdown thinking about that past event repeating while spooky stuff is happening to Undertale's Dess and Noelle

The Two Losers of Hometown
Tumblr media
So, I replayed deltarune again, which isn't really anything new, I always replay it from time to time. But this time I kinda started thinking about two characters that I never really see much discussion about. Monster kid and Snowy. A large part could be well, they aren't really important to the story as of chapter 2. But I feel like there's a lot of potential with them.
Looking at their dialog, it really feels like they only talk to each other because they really don't have anyone else to talk to. I feel this way because in chapter one they're both only partners because Kris was late to class and Monster kid didn't have any other option, as monster kid mentions being Snowy’s partner to Kris like it's something they really didn’t want. But Snowy and Monster kid can be seen hanging out outside of school, so maybe it's not so bad for poor old MK.
There's a few lines that imply that monster kid and kris actually have history together, similar to how frisk and monster kid were "friends" in undertale. It's hard to tell how close they really were since there is barely any dialog that I'm aware of that hints to Kris's feelings about monster kid. There is a line in chapter 1, after a joke about the 3 armless students in class playing handball, Monster kid says that Susie sucks and Kris looks annoyed at Monster kid. Which probably doesn't help their already weak relationship. Monster kid seems to know something about Kris and the bunker because of what they say to Snowy when they're contemplating about going in, whether Kris told them something about it or it's just a general rumor that everyone knows is kind of hard to tell. And going back to what I said about the lack of dialog mentioning Monster kid, there actually isn't any dialog about monster kid in the game (that I'm aware of) aside from when they're directly being interacted with by Kris or Snowy. This is probably because it's hard to have a character talk about them without a name drop, and it would be really weird from someone like Noelle to refer to them as "monster kid".
Snowy is the character that's probably most up for interpretation since we know the least about him. And most about what we do know about him can be inferred from undertale. His real name is Snowdrake but he got the nickname Snowy from his mom, He likes making jokes, his moms dead. And this is a really huge one, that I didn't even know before checking the wiki, IN UNDERTALE HE RAN AWAY FROM HOME BECAUSE OF HIS DAD?
Tumblr media
It's not clear what Snowy means by his dad being "cold" but to avoid discussing any unsavory topics, I'll leave it at that his home situation was bad enough for him to decide to run away. It's pretty easy to infer that Snowy uses humor to deal with all of the stuff going on in his life just because of the fact that his life wasn't all that great in deltarune/undertale with his mom being dead. But him trying to play off him running away from home, by cracking a pun about it practically confirms it. Snowy and his dad's relationship seems to be healthier in deltarune since Snowy hasn't decides to run away from home, but his dad still seems to be stern as snowy mentions that his dad "wouldn't let him see the end of it" if he got caught skipping class like kris in chapter one. It's actually pretty sad that Snowy doesn't really seem to have that many friends outside of monster kid since it seems that his coping mechanism of always making jokes as well him being quick to anger seems to be why people avoid him.
I guess that's all I really gotta say right now, these dorks have a surprising amount of depth to them despite not having major roles in both of the games they're in. I just hope they get used some day; But that's probably wishful thinking. I only say that because right now they both give off strong background character energy. Mostly because of Snowy being a recycled enemy from undertale and monster kid not even having an official "name". Which sucks because I feel like you could write a really cool story with these two.

ralsei-NO WAIT, SUZIE!!!!
I’m just taking this as an excuse to do both, so!
Susie
Favorite thing about them: She’s so soft and emotional and genuine under her scary exterior. She cares for her friends so much. She doesn’t really understand how Darkners turn into items but she’s sad when Lancer isn’t around and so so happy when he does reappear. And how ecstatic she is to show off her healing magic, or how she takes the time to get Kris smiling after the Spamton fight. I am very soft for characters like her, who care so much more than you’d expect.
Least favorite thing about them: I hope her not realizing Darkners turn into items is going somewhere. She’s not a smart kid, but that just seems. A bit oddly dumb of her? So I kinda hope there’s a reason she can’t figure it out and it’s not just a running gag.
Favorite line: Probably when Lancer says he wants to be like her and she just goes ‘You want to be… like me?’ It’s the beginning of a beautiful friendship and her character development, but also shows some vulnerability, because so far, we’ve gotten the impression NO ONE likes or looks up to Susie. Susie confronting Snowdrake and MK outside the bunker was also great. And in terms of comedy nothing tops ‘What would Kris do…? (Eat moss/point and hearts come out)
She’s just a goldmine of great quotes okay.
brOTP: Is it not obvious? Susie and Lancer.
OTP: I think think Krusielle (Kris, Susie, and Noelle) is an underrated dynamic. I want all three to be weird together.
nOTP: Uh, don’t really have one? Not one I have very strong feelings about, anyways.
Random Headcanon: In the fancomic Paper Trail, Susie was always hungry and eating weird stuff because no one ever bothered telling her she was a carnivorous species of monster, and she recounted a memory where she got so hungry she broke down and ate the class pet in kindergarten and felt so guilty, and there was a scene where Noelle told her and told her about services she can use to get the food she needs even if she’s poor and Susie just broke down going ‘this is… normal? I’m not a monster?’ Technically not mine but I loved that concept.
I also like the theory Susie grew up in a human community, or even knew Kris in that community before the Dreemurrs adopted them.
Unpopular Opinion: Uuuh… none really.
Song I associate with them: I think she’d sing along really loudly to Godzilla by Blue Oyster Cult.
Favorite Picture of them: Don’t got one.
Ralsei
Favorite thing about them: How thoughtful he is! He makes rooms for Kris and Susie with more care than Queen does, he tells Kris(us) that we don’t need to explore all Castletown bow we can take a break, he banishes Kris and Susie until they do their homework… he’s not perfect at it. But I genuinely don’t think he’ll pull a Toriel and try to trap Kris snd Susie in Castletown. He wants to provide them with a place to escape, but not at the cost of their lives and relationships in the Dark World.
Least favorite thing about them: When is a Lightner going to comment on his similarity to Asriel? When are we going to address the elephant in the room? When?
Favorite line: When he remarks how wonderful that Susie is herself, and wonders what being Ralsei-like even is.
brOTP: Uh. Don’t really have one I feel strongly about yet.
OTP: Same. I only really enjoy a ship if I enjoy the dynamic of the relationship, and Ralsei is so passive with everyone that he just… isn’t even noticed by a lot of people. Makes it a little hard for me to get invested in any ships with him as of now. Maybe that’ll change in the future?
nOTP: Again, no strong feelings here. I guess I don’t love Kralsei, because his devotion to Kris in canon can easily turn into that thing I hate where a character has no personality beyond loving and supporting another, but I don’t have any particular vitriol for the ship. I think I’d prefer to see him figure out what being ‘Ralsei-like’ means before he gets into a relationship, especially with Kris. But I don’t think I hate it enough to call it a nOTP, per se, it’s just not what I really want to see from the character.
Random headcanon: I like my weird baseless speculation that Chara made him based off of their idealized vision of Asriel, just like how Flowey was projecting his idealized vision of Chara onto Frisk.
Unpopular opinion: There is a huge spectrum between ‘sweet little cinnamon roll’ and ‘evil mastermind, satan incarnate,’ you guys… and several mysteries surrounding him become kinda obvious if you just think a little bit.
Song I associate with them: Canary in a Coal Mine by the Crane Wives feels applicable.
Favorite picture of them: Still don’t really have one.

Was just thinking about how in C2 DELTARUNE theres a door in queens palace that leads to a room queen designed for asriel but kris wont let us, the player, see it. And that got me thinking, so I thought I'd share the fan theory that came out of it. I'm not fully convinced by this since we'd need more information but I think it logically follows and I'd like to share. So, stop reading past this point for major spoilers of secret stuff and easter eggs.
In chapter 1, theres a lot of talk around town about asriel, his friends who haven't gone to college yet, or aren't going to, miss him and tell us a lot about him. About how he was helpful, kind, supportive, he easily made friends with everyone. Kris doesnt have many friends their age because they were always following Asriel around. We know that Asriel is supposed to be coming home from college soon in a week, and each chapter is roughly a day so we're counting down to Asriel coming home.
I'd like to also preface with the observation that Gaster, or atleast the goners seem very present in the light world around hometown. Temmie has an egg which they say is their partner, which seems like a call back to the hard boiled egg in undertale, but what if instead, it's the man behind the tree seen later in the dark world which is the only source of eggs as an item. Theres also the striped bird in the library, which greatly resembles a goner from undertale.
Tumblr media
And lastly, near the bunker that you cant enter, if kris stands near it in chapter 1, it begins playing ominous music which has been associated with Gaster.
Now that we've got all that out of the way, I'd like to pose a question: what if something happened to Asriel?
What if something happened to asriel when they last came back from college, leading to asriel dying, potentially near the bunker? And kris, so distraught was willing to do everything in their power to undo it? We can see gasters tendrils through the light world, especially concentrating around the bunker. If he reached out to kris or vice versa, and kris begged them to fix it, gaster could have made a faustian bargain with them, and taught them how to open dark worlds that are manipulated by his desire when he opens them, and he could create a vessel for Asriel. But in the meantime, Kris needed to incubate asriel, or the cost of plucking asriels soul from the aether was kris's soul, and we're playing as Asriel possessing kris. And Ralsei is the intended vessel, extra indicated by the heart on ralseis robes. Kris might be avoiding developing feelings for ralsei as an individual knowing what the outcome will be, but needs Asriel to love Ralsei to cement the connection later, assuming love of the vessel, something mentioned very early into the vessel creation, could be what ties a soul to a new body. It also makes ralseis name make more sense.
I feel like kris and Ralsei are indeed up to something that we dont know about, considering Ralsei talked to kris in the cutscene without us knowing what they said. And from spamton we know that lightner souls are powerful, and if [heaven] is the light world, then a lightner soul could make a darkner into a lightner.
It could also add an extra level of horror to the genocide and snowgrave situations, considering that kris didn't know his brother was capable of that kind of evil, and that maybe subverting the natural law was a mistake, asriel becoming a vengeful wraith, lashing out at being denied peace and destroying kris' life, not remembering who they were.
If pacifist it also makes sense how easily we the player befriend everyone. It's incredibly out of character for kris, but not for asriel. And why kris' room in the dark world looks more like asriels side of the room which makes me think that if true, Ralsei may be in on his own annihilation. Because darkners are meant to serve a purpose and cant deviate beyond reasonable limitations. And to come full circle, maybe the reason kris is hiding things about asriel from the player is that the player is asriel, and if that realization comes to early, we'd be lost as we completely disassociate from kris.
And it would also tie into the themes of overcoming loss present in undertale. In undertale it was Asriel who couldnt accept charas death and everything was set in motion by his inability to accept her death or harm others, and everything ended when she possessed frisk and led him to help asriel overcome his grief. This time it would be charas counterpart, kris, unable to accept his brothers death, and brought him back, willing to sacrifice as many other people as it takes to regain what was lost.
Like I said I'm not completely sold on this yet but I thought it was interesting and would fill in some holes left by the story so far. We'll need more information to verify but it definitely seems like something toby would do, based on undertale. We'll have to see how it shakes out.

There are a few other things going on all over the world this process is going on people are stepping down and they looked at as ineffective by their own and they are taking big amounts of hits right now in the Western hemisphere 60% of military type areas whatever they are are hit of the warlock and 20% of civilian congregations of morlock with their bunched up but it's 20% of their area and comprises probably 1% of their population and that was in the west it's a lot of people that they hit and it's a bad day for these two groups the Eastern hemisphere is going to heat up momentarily the more locker down to around 10% off Island and this attack is going to reduce them greatly as they are trying to rebuild and it is a lot of area and there's a lot of people there and they plan on attacking to not allow them to rebuild this huge groups of people trying to rebuild they're also attacking bunkers and they are attacking down below and huge numbers by the way huge and will probably lose two or three percent of them today and it's not a good day for them.
-on top of the cabinets and the White House people vacating their positions and new being appointed today there are several other positions being vacated
-one of them is the director of social security she got up this morning and headed into work and said I'm riding my resignation I can't stand it anymore and her son says welcome to the club is people make it unbearable and it's actually true but the pseudo empire are the ones pressuring her and they say you're not really one of them but you're not one of us and we need you out and they told John to read the Lord that he's out and to vacate the premises so he is going to be fired if he doesn't leave and his son they're tired of this monthly horseshit and really they are also threatening our sons social security and the empire is going to take them on directly. She is telling her people she is vacating a position and it's not gone from leadership that they are to stay tuned and she will be speaking to them about what is coming next. My son wants to know if they want to start the international harvester being the remnants of the clan and she says isn't that in Kentucky and he says I believe so that has been notably turned into a different area in the South and some places and she says not really it's just going to look into it because it's true those areas did turn into black areas especially Tennessee and the company is based in Tennessee not Kentucky so she's grabbing on to the phone and she's going to call around about the vehicle and it's a very versatile vehicle and I'll be used for military uses Biden is thinking about it and Daniel and they do have them do stuff and it would be useful and she's happy to have a job. And it says it's not too hard to start up they have a lot of people with this fiberglass and they know how to make the sandwich and the panels they want to know if he wants the job this is I can fly in there but make a big mess and she's talking about design and he says will and Bill can do it because it's pretty close to what it looked like in the past and aesthetically it's supposed to be about the same look but she wants a design for the frame internal frame for the panels and so she looks at them and says I'm trying to hire him and he says he doesn't do the calculations and stuff and it's not much design work for him but he can work for us if you want and she says why would I do that and he says I kind of go around and like don't look like I'm doing anything can I buy coffee and stuff and she's laughing and saying it's just like work and he says yes it is. And she gets it but he says he probably want to start with a frame I don't know if they have chassis they're probably not and they don't and you might want to use my ts system the kris favorite she's they say they're not naming it that. And the next day he uses is horrible she says so he says you can drive your pink Porsche down there and she's happy about that and in and out of the office quite literally if it's electric and I've been Porsche as an electric they always look like massive Jetson vehicles and she says that's awesome so she's probably going to try and get one of those and Camilla wants to be involved and says you have to call the Rock cuz his type of vehicle so they're going to get involved they're in that area he gives them something to do and trouble come in and I'll take money and they like that idea so all in all that's working out and we're going to print

Theory: What Happened to Dess?
(major Deltarune spoilers)
I've seen a lot of speculation floating around about what happened to Noelle's sister Dess. I've seen these theories so far:
1. Noelle accidentally killed Dess with her ice powers. It traumatized her and that's why she choked during the spelling bee and stares into the freezer at the grocery store.
2. Asgore accidentally ran over Dess and this is why he doesn't use his car and why Undyne is so preoccupied with traffic.
3. Dess ran away to escape their overbearing mom, leaving Noelle in a worse situation. Asgore couldn't find her and that's why he was dismissed from the force.
I like bits and pieces of all these theories so I've combined parts of them into one theory I haven't seen yet: Dess's body is in the bunker in the woods.
Let me cover some ground info and evidence for my theory. I'll be going over some stuff that others have put together already (like Dess's full name) so I couldn't have come to this conclusion without the work of other theory crafters.
1. Dess's full name is December. We can assume this because the buttons spell out "December" when Noelle is talking about Dess for the first time. The room Queen puts Noelle in has clothes that don't look like they belong to Noelle and a calendar that only has the last month of the year, implying it's her sister's room and her name is December.
2. Noelle speaks about Dess in the past tense, as though she has died.
3. Noelle chokes during the spelling bee when asked to spell December, implying that when she was a kid, the thought of her sister was traumatic or upsetting enough to make her go quiet.
4. Noelle also stands and stares into the freezer at Sans's grocery store, as if frozen in place, similar to her reaction during the spelling bee. This implies that her trauma has something to do with the cold, doors, or both.
5. There is no grave for Dess in the town's graveyard. If she is dead, it's likely her body was not found. Given her family attends the church next to the graveyard, it's unlikely they would choose to cremate her or bury her elsewhere.
6. Catti in the cafe says that she, Noelle, and Kris were all interested in the occult when they were younger. The way she talks about it, it doesn't sound like casting magic spells, but more like practicing wicca or doing rituals. I don't think magic as it exists in the dark world is a thing in the real world, judging by how surprised Susie seems by all of it. So I don't think that Noelle can do ice magic in the real world, and her association with the cold and trauma comes from something else.
7. Noelle seems to black out when she does or sees something upsetting. She blacks out and doesn't remember what happened when you force her to "proceed" or "get" the ring.
8. When Noelle talks about the night that she, Dess, Kris, and Asriel went to the woods as kids, she says she doesn't remember how that night ended. She only remembers the beginning and feeling nostalgic.
9. If you take her to Spamton's area in the dump - a quiet, creepy, abandoned hole in the wall - she says it feels nostalgic somehow.
10. Post-game, you can see two of Kris's classmates at the bunker contemplating going inside, implying there's some sort of negative rumors about it and that Kris is "a weenie" who is scared of it.
11. The newspaper clipping in the police station says Asgore was dismissed from the force for unstated reasons. This implies he did something bad, but not bad enough to go to jail himself. If he killed Dess (even accidentally), I don't think Rudy would speak so fondly of him.
Given all this, here is my final conclusion on what happened to Dess:
Dess, Noelle, Kris, and Asriel were out in the woods together, having fun and exploring. They found the bunker at some point - a creepy, isolated door in the middle of the quiet woods, just like Spamton's area that Noelle also describes "nostalgic." Kris and Noelle were probably interested in it, because they both were into creepy, occult things. When they opened the door, trapped air in a bunker like that tends to be chilly and it rushed out when released, not unlike the freezer door that Noelle stares blankly into.
The kids went into the cold, abandoned bunker in the woods and something happened down there. Perhaps it was something occult, or just a traumatic accident. Noelle either witnessed what happened to Dess or found Dess's cold, frozen body after she died, but has blacked out the memory and now freezes up when reminded of it. Kris may not have seen everything, but knows enough to be scared of the bunker.
Asgore, a police officer at the time, was never able to find Dess. Maybe the kids sealed the bunker after they left and Asgore couldn't get in. Or perhaps something happened with all the kids down there that caused Dess to get hurt, and Asgore was worried his kids would get in trouble and kept it a secret to protect them. Since he never found Dess, Asgore was dismissed from the force by Noelle's mom, the mayor.
Since Dess's body was never found and buried, Dess's corpse could still be in the bunker during the events of Deltarune.

Kris and Noelle
(Spoilers!)
First of all, what we know about their relationship is that they grew up together as childhood friends, with Noelle being the “Girl Next Door”, but have since then drifted apart (which you know, I eat that shit UP). Their parents all may have been college friends, as well, so it seems they all were pretty familial with each other.
But then something or things happened that made the families grow apart. There’s this mystery behind Dess and her apparent lack of appearance in the town, Asgore’s Incident that led him to lose his position on the force, Rudy’s illness, the Mayor’s...general coldness it seems, Kris’ fear of the bunker that we know the four kids (Azzy/Asriel, Dess/December, Noelle, Kris) all used to play around. It’s al just a bunch of pieces that don’t make sense yet.
But now back to Noelle and Kris. When the story starts, they aren’t as close as they were, but going on the adventure seems to have allowed them to maybe reconnect and bond. And something about it feels so nostalgic to me, just like Noelle said, and there’s a sort of special feeling that comes from reconnecting with someone that kind of Gets You in a way others maybe can’t.
They’re both the younger sibling (i think) and  both seem to have somewhat dysfunctional family, and having someone who understands is nice sometimes. Noelle has known Kris the longest out of the group, and reveals to the Player that Kris is actually a bit of a prankster who likes to scare Noelle, but...Noelle likes scary things, so maybe they share a love for these sort of stuff! Even before the Dark World stuff, Noelle seems to still be nice to Kris and be concerned with their well-being.
I think the Snowgrave route also reveals a lot about their dynamic...
In Snowgrave, the Player makes use of Noelle’s lack of boldness and ability to act for herself to create a cold killer, which Kris clearly tries to resist and is mortified by it, but can do nothing against the Player. It’s a sort of tragic parallel between the two: Kris is literally the Player’s puppet, unable to move or really live without them, while Noelle also becomes a puppet, because she lacks her own willpower (or “Determination”) and unleashes her power in a negative way.
When they all leave the Dark World, Noelle starts to put together that Kris hasn’t been acting like themself, and that she’s hearing voices unlike Kris’s. She’s concerned for them, and wonders why no one else has noticed it. She wants to help Kris, maybe because she probably understands the feeling of not Acting Like Yourself, or being manipulated to act differently. Though I love Kris’ friendship with the other characters, because of this I think Noelle is the most suited to like...help or understand Kris’ troubles.
Overall with both routes, there’s a bittersweet feeling that lingers. Going on an adventure with a friend you were close with as a kid and someone who can Understand, finally being given the opportunity to reconnect...then when the adventure ends you wonder if it’ll last. If it werent for the first Dark World, Kris and Susie wouldn’t have become friends, and if it weren’t for this one, Kris and Noelle might have stayed childhoodfriends-turned-acquaintences forever :0
It’s like the feeling that comes from thinking you’d have to deal with your shit alone, and maybe no one will ever come, but then finding a friend from your past that reminds you, that no you’re not really alone and that even if you’ve drifted, they can still understand and help you. I dont know I just think its sweet.
Anyways, that was my whole spiel I just love them

Thoughts on Deltarune Chapter 2
Tumblr media
I wasn't even intending to write a Deltarune post, but here we are!
Have some extended ramblings/theorizing about Undertale, Deltarune, and the role of the "Player" vs character agency.
[Warning: full spoilers for ALL routes in both Undertale and Deltarune!]
.
Tumblr media
Frisk’s Agency in Undertale
So I'm not sure how common this is nowadays (I haven't been following Undertale theories for a while), but I personally prefer the interpretation that there is no "Player" as an in-universe force in Undertale. I think it's a far more elegant story if the fourth wall isn't broken.
I'm also fond of the Narrator Chara and "Chara isn't pure evil until Murder Route teaches them to be" interpretations too.
And, of course, the third plank bridging those two is that I don't see Frisk as a just a pure, innocent cinnamon roll.
Tumblr media
Because I like the story best when it's Frisk who chooses mercy or murder. It gives Frisk a much more complex character, if they are allowed to have the capacity for both immense kindness and immense cruelty. It even gives them an interesting implied character arc, if you take the natural progression path of True Pacifist > Murder Fun Times > Soulless Pacifist.
Just like Flowey, Frisk first tried to use their powers of Determination for good, but eventually they also grew curious and began to see the world as a game. And then they went too far and ultimately regretted it. Regretted it so much, in fact, that they were willing to sell their soul for just a chance to fix it.
After all, it's not you, the "Player," whose SOUL Chara wants. It's you, Frisk.
Tumblr media
I also dislike the idea of an in-universe "Player" because that implies that "Frisk" is nothing but an empty shell - on ALL routes. All of those heartwarming moments in the True Pacifist route? All of the silly Flirt actions? Yeah, that's not Frisk, that's just as much the "Player" puppeting some poor kid's body as the events of the Bad Times.
Who knows what Frisk is truly like if their every action - good or ill - is controlled by some unseen, eldritch force? Now Frisk no longer has any characterization.
And given that said force overrides Frisk's agency, then isn't the "Player" evil no matter which route you take? It's become a story where they only "moral" choice is never to pick up the game at all. Hrm.
Anyway, but that's all Undertale. Which brings me to...
Tumblr media
What the heck is going on in Deltarune?
Unlike Frisk=the Red SOUL in Undertale, we don't seem to control Kris=the Red SOUL in Deltarune. The game repeatedly underlines that the player only controls the Red SOUL, not Kris.
(Though, with stuff like the sound of the bathroom faucet only being audible when Kris's actual body is nearby - it seems like even when separated, the Red SOUL may still be perceiving through Kris's other senses besides sight...?)
Tumblr media
With Spamton's dialogue and Kris's reaction after the non-Weird NEO fight, there's also a lot more emphasis in Deltarune of Kris (and the rest of the party!) being puppeted by some other force. And that's on top of all the stuff in the first chapter highlighting Kris/the Red SOUL's lack of agency.
Because of all those hints, Deltarune seems to be much more explicitly pointing toward that dark interpretation of Undertale - that the "Player"/Red SOUL is removing Kris's agency, regardless of route.
Tumblr media
Indeed, I'm somewhat intrigued by the possibility that we/the Red SOUL might be forcing Kris to act nice just as much as we force them to act cruel. The way that Kris deliberately removes the Red SOUL in order to do some very suspicious actions might support that. As do some comments in Chapter 1, like characters in the post-Dark World walkaround noting how Kris is being less weird and more inquisitive than usual. Maybe Kris is the Knight and the Red SOUL is possessing them to undo their evil actions. Maybe the real Kris doesn't want to be friends with Susie and Ralsei at all!
Tumblr media
But taking that interpretation to such an extreme also doesn't quite fit. Why does Kris slash the tires on Toriel's car? The only reason I can think of is that they want to keep Susie at their house. And why does Kris create the Dark World in their house? Is Kris creating the fountains because they want to have fun with friends? Especially right after the chapter emphasized how great the Dark World adventures were, that seems very likely.
There are also some smaller details too, of Kris interpreting the Red SOUL's input with their own spin (like saying things sarcastically), or of Kris chatting in a friendly way with Ralsei which the player/SOUL can't influence.
So, I'm pretty sure that even outside of the Red SOUL's control, Kris genuinely does like their friends.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, there were a lot of hints this chapter that Something Bad happened to Kris, Noelle, Dess, and Asriel when they went exploring in the forest by the graveyard. Most likely, they went into that ominous bunker south of the town. Is that incident related to Kris’s current strangeness?
Tumblr media
And then, and THEN, there's the Snow Mercy route. That route seems to imply that the Red SOUL is both evil, and very much not Kris. Noelle says Kris isn't like themself, that their voice changes strangely, and she can still hear the creepy voice even when Kris is downed.
How to make sense of this all?
Tumblr media
A Theory on Kris and the Red SOUL
One idea is that as scary and zombie-like as Kris looks without the SOUL, they're probably a nice, if lonely kid who desperately wants friends after their big brother went to college. (And possibly after something traumatic happened to them/their neighbor.) They're creating the Dark Worlds for the sake of fun and escapism.
But the Red SOUL puts an end to Kris's happy fantasies. Indeed, if the Red SOUL gives up, "the world is covered in darkness." So without the Red SOUL, would Kris simply keep creating fountains...? (What ARE the fountains, why can Kris and theoretically any Lightener create them?)
Maybe in the normal route, the Red SOUL is trying to gently help Kris move on and accept reality in some way. At the very least, I suspect Ralsei is working toward this goal.
But in that case... that's a pretty strange way for the Red SOUL to go about it, forcibly taking control of Kris to the point that the kid notices and seems to greatly resent it.
But what if the Red SOUL didn't have a choice about this arrangement either?
After all, the Red SOUL's customized vessel was discarded at the start of Chapter 1... and it was placed into Kris instead.
Tumblr media
Here's a question: will Kris die if they're without a SOUL for too long?
Because there are an awful lot of moments in these games where characters break free of something they are bound to, but it doesn't end well: -Spamton collapses when his strings are cut. -The Darkeners can move freely outside their origin world for a while, but eventually turn to statues if they stay in another world. -Regardless of whether Berdly removes the Queen’s wires himself, he's exhausted and unable to fight any more after being under her control. -And when Kris takes the Red SOUL out of their body, their movements become slow and clumsy. Like it's a struggle for them to move at all.
Meanwhile in Undertale, post-Pacifist Asriel could maintain his form to say goodbye, but without SOUL(s), he inevitably returns to being Flowey.
So here's a theory: Kris died and/or lost their original soul. Perhaps due to some action/inaction on Noelle's part in the exploration incident. And as a last-ditch resort to keep them alive, the Red SOUL was somehow implanted in Kris.
(Also maybe Dess died/went missing at the same time...?)
And now, the Red SOUL the only thing keeping Kris around.
Tumblr media
But just like in Undertale, it seems like Deltarune SOULs have wills of their own.
Which means Kris's current state is similar to the Chara-Asriel fusion, or Omega Flowey, or even Frisk-Chara. Control of the body is shared. The difference is that instead of the SOUL we play representing the original owner/will of the body, this time the SOUL we're playing as is the intruder.
Essentially, this time around we are playing the role of the Chara-equivalent instead of the Frisk-equivalent!
(Though whether Kris themself is more of Chara or Frisk I’ll leave to other theorists...)
Anyway, while Kris likely wishes to be rid of the SOUL and dislikes this whole body sharing arrangement, they know they can't survive without it. And perhaps Kris being in a partially soulless state might explain why they do questionable stuff like creating Dark Worlds and slashing their mom's car tires in order to play with their friends. (Again, see also: Asriel/Flowey.)
But when the Red SOUL and Kris are in alignment, things go okay. The Red SOUL suggests commands, but Kris is willing to follow and seems to enjoy being with Susie and Ralsei.
Tumblr media
Let’s Talk About Snow Mercy
It's when the Red SOUL and Kris aren't in alignment... well. That seems to be what's happening in the Snow Mercy route. That kind of situation sure didn't go so hot with Frisk and Chara in Undertale, so I doubt this will end nicely for Kris and the Red SOUL either. At the very least, Kris seems to have been visibly upset after what happened with Noelle in this route.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(By the way, there are two other moments in Chapter 2 when Susie asks if Kris is okay - first after the normal Spamton NEO fight and subsequent discussion of what it meant and second after she and Kris approach the bunker.
Three different moments, but Kris appears to react similarly. Are all of these things related? The bunker, Kris being puppeted, and the events of the Snow Mercy route?)
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, here’s a contrast. Undertale's Murder Route seemed to exist for the sake of curiosity and power - either the "Player" or Frisk's desires, whichever interpretation you subscribe to. And the changes to the world were all logical consequences of that - because of the Fallen Child's rampage, friendly NPCs disappear, major characters fight you more seriously, etc.
But the actions in Snow Mercy are... weirdly specific, weirdly unpredictable. It doesn't come across as a simple power trip. Instead, Snow Mercy is a bunch of really bizarre actions that feel even more mysterious to the player as they are to Noelle and Kris. I sure wouldn't have guessed that backtracking to the trash heap and freezing a bunch of enemies would lead to new items spontaneously appearing and then giving Noelle access to a scary new spell. It's like something straight out of a creepypasta!
Tumblr media
The overall tone that comes across to me is that the Red SOUL seems to know what it's doing, even while the player is kept in the dark. And given Noelle's responses, it almost seems like the SOUL is trying to remind her of events/actions from her past, events which are obviously unknown to the player. All of which leads me to think that the Red SOUL has motives and goals of its own... so just like Undertale, this probably isn't a situation of the "Player" being a fourth wall-breaking force either.
The Red SOUL is its own character.
And I'm certainly curious to find out more about them!

is It okay if o have a review about the Kris is knight theory? Just a run down of all the evidence
honestly like. we don't have much concrete evidence of Anything i'm more going off like. storytelling tropes and setup and what would be Satisfying but. here's my best effort at laying things out
in ch1, obviously we don't get... much from kris, and the knight is a pretty vague figure who seems like they may have been present in the dark world doing things. then the ch1 ending happens where kris yoinks the soul out and gets out their knife, and while it's entirely possible they JUST wanted pie, in concert w the ch2 ending where they yoink the soul w the ease of practice to open a fountain, it's def possible to imagine them having non-pie plans as well!
in ch2, we get a lot more about the knight, including that they're a lightner, imagery of a human hand holding a knife, they/it pronoun usage, and the knowledge that things lightners do can affect the dark world even if they're not actively in it. the queen has never met the knight, and it seems like she knows about them because of their influence on the world existing, rather than bc they hung out or anything. (she also clarifies she was kind of making assumptions about their motives, which helps explain king in ch1 making a lot of claims about what the knight wanted).
(also not as direct but if you try to wash your hands at the start of ch2 kris says it's not time for that yet...)
(also also they seem a little freaked out when noelle and berdly go to the library but)
then we get susie talking about the dark world with kris, about how she doesn't mind what the knight is doing really, how she thinks things are better because of the dark worlds, how she's hoping for more. and then kris, uh, pulls their stunts.
we also have the bunker thing, and dess, where Something happened that apparently terrified kris at the weird fucking bunker and also. where is dess
there's also some other stuff i could get into - what ralsei and kris might be discussing when the soul's off watching lesbians, for example - but
so. let's go thru:
-we have motives - escapism, wanting better for kris and their friends, wanting a way out of an awful situation even temporarily. maybe there's something more they want, like a way to end said situation, but the escapism is Right There
-we have methods - they have the bunker incident, where someone could have taught them the trick, explaining why they're the first one to be able to do it and thus become the knight. plus we have time where they're unaccounted for on the night of ch1, we have the first two dark fountains both being somewhere easy for kris to access, we have ralsei maybe helping them behind our backs, etc
-we have symbolism and imagery and other subtle clues - kris is a knight in design in the dark world, the imagery queen uses to talk abt the knight is very much kris-like, they pronoun usage, thematic resonance w the themes of escapism, etc

i am so brainrotted about deltarune all of the time. do you have any kris or soul theories i would love to hear them — anothergoddamnmystery
OOHHH that's a good question. I also have perma-brainrot for this video game even tho I'm. Very much not a theorizer??? I like watching shows with a lot mystery and then. Letting other people solve the mysteries <3
I think what's more my wheelhouse is the. Weird debate regarding the morality of. Playing deltarune??? As in, if the theory that Kris and the soul are separate entities, with us controlling the soul that posseses Kris, turns out to be true then...does that make us the bad guys? Is Toby Fox punishing us for playing the game?? Why would he do that???
I get why some ppl would think this way and I've had like. Similar thoughts before about similar media with meta narratives, but i don't think that's the case and is a reductive way to look at it? Because deltarune and Undertale are games about choices- what you can and can't control and what you do with the options given to you- and they use their medium as a video game to bring that message directly to the player, the person making all the choices. You're not a bad person for controlling Kris who probably doesn't like being controlled 90% of the time (because at the end of the day Kris isn't a real person suffering real harm), you're just not playing an average RPG (I'm. Very sick of ppl trying to argue that anyone who likes the player is the soul theory doesn't understand what video games are. Feels kind of insulting to me) and that's A Good Thing Actually.
That was a bit. Ranty (I'm not actually upset about people who don't believe the soul/player theory, I just think the people I've seen arguing against it are making very poor arguments motivated by them feeling punished for it hdbdjf) so uh. In terms of any actual theory content related to Kris and the soul?
I think that the relationship is more complicated than just us possessing Kris. My bet is that they somehow invited us to control them (possibly during the vessel creation?) For Some Reason. They've shown an interest in like. demonic possession and stuff (I think it's seen in their search results in queens mansion/some of cattie's dialogue?? It's been a while so I could be wrong) one person theorized they did it after having to chose between asgore and toriel in the divorce, another theorized it has something to do with the bunker, which might have something to do with dess holiday, and... there's a lot of possibilities essentially. But a lot a possession narratives play with the idea of a posses-ee agreeing w/ the posses-or because they gain something from it, even though they're often manipulated, have their hand forced, given limited information/don't know what they're getting into, etc.
Idk how much of this is a theory on what the relationship between Kris and the red soul is and how much is like. Me toying with an interesting potential route the game could go down, but uh. Either way. @ Kris honey you've got a big storm coming

Anonymous Ask Responses #14
I'm back after a good chunk of a spring break, and I should probably get all these asks in my inbox out before I get the next story part out. Might help some, haha. And again, sorry for the delay. I feel bad for continuing these delays over and over. Maybe for once I can actually get back on the ball.
As usual, any non-anonymous asks will have a tag for the person who asked. The title has just... become a title at this point. ^-^;
————————
"Oh boy! Toriel’s going to meet player" Yup, that she is! Whether that's good or bad is yet to be seen, but who knows... We'll have to find out.
————————
"Lol Susie is all of us with this fic" Pretty much. Unfortunately, filler segments are not very appealing in a story, and as such I want to keep them low in number. There will be some- trust me, there's bits and pieces that are pretty much guaranteed to be filler- (cough cough) character interactions that I will not specifically mention (cough cough) but filler is a lot harder to have in a text story than it is to have in a comic. Sorry, Susie.
————————
"That reminds me, we still don’t know about what happened to all the other humans" Good point! We learn what happened to Gaster/Knight, and we see glimpses of the other humans, but there's no telling for sure what they think. All we see is Gaster/Knight and what he says- and he's pretty twisted. So he might be planting ideas of the remaining humans in the bunker being angry when they really just want some pecking fresh food. I mean, I'd get sick of canned, preserved food if I had to eat it for 66 years and 162 days straight. Give me a burger or something, peck it all. And now I'm actually hungry. Great.
————————
"Wait kris didn’t tell Susie and noelle about asriel’s secret diary enteries?" Upon further review, you just mentioned something I completely missed! I'll have to find some way to touch on that or incorporate that into the story somehow, thanks for mentioning it! TL;DR: Kris didn't tell Susie and Noelle about the diary entries because I did a forgor and didn't think about that, and now my brain wants to use that for plot purposes.
————————
"Insert doctor who meme about time travel here"
Tumblr media
It has been inserted.
————————
"Did player play undertale?"
Honestly? I can't say for sure... that's a good question, though in the end that means we have to assume not. It's annoying but there's not much I can do there...
————————
@prhthezanko: "I like how the player is somewhat avoiding Toriel, but does the player know of the "Incident" that happened? Or is it intuition that another human around would cause issues?" It's mostly intuition- Player's SOUL wasn't in the Light World to see the chat between Toriel and Sans, and since there's literally no other humans during the whole of both Deltarune Chapter 1 as well as the Paper Trail comic, it's clear that there's no humans for some reason. So seeing another one... probably would be concerning, for some reason or another.
And if the event is taken into account, it makes it all the more concerning...
————————
With that last question finished, my inbox is now clear of asks and I can now get back to writing the story of Disconnected. I'm looking forward to getting the interactions of the next chapter into play, and seeing how it goes! (And hopefully this one doesn't take weeks to write... blegh...) As usual, make sure to check out Lynx's stuff, as well as the other Paper Trail fan-stuff! I can't stress enough that this blog isn't meant to be a solid continuation, but rather one of many different 'stories' that we create upon the end of Paper Trail, much like Gaster says. Because for as much of a peck neck he is, he's also quite smart- and he is right. We don't like leaving stories on cliffhangers. So we make our own to fill the gaps.
So please check out the other stories and content, and see how others fill the gap in their own way.
With that said and done, I'll see you all soon, whenever the next part is released!

Hi! I'm new to systems and things like this.. uh. What does your headspace look like? Or do you have a history with yours. I dunno what to do for mine...
Oh hey! Sorry we haven’t responded kdbjdb
Uhh honestly our headspace is a Little Big so, im not sure where to start.. it’s not very simple to explain since we have a map’s worth of area to cover! And each place has it’s own Feel and stuff. I’ll try to be a bit brief- maybe going through our Headspace History (HH /j)
So along time ago, we only had the Meadow, and for the OG members, they thought it was all we had. Then over time and after some exploring, it grew! Well, it didn’t grow, but they started exploring and finding new stuff. Then Jaiden made the mansion, and it kind of explodes from there until it slowed down again sicne we all had no interesting in exploring anymore
RIP desktop users. Mobile users, freel free to tap the image and zoom in!
Tumblr media
It’s not accurate but this is what we have today. It’s VERY Huge. We even have a second planet, but we don’t really visit that nymore, nor do we want to. On the other side of the world, i know there’s a beach.. but we haven’t gone more than a year though with how Big this map is, do know that there’s trees and LOTS of unexplored areas! We don’t have NPC’s other than Small critters like mice, rabbits, owls, fireflies, bugs, birds, etc! So we don;t have predators either, but it’s possible there are wolves in the mountains.. I am NOT going to try and confirm that. The other NPC’s we have are the Robots in the ruined City. They are NOT friendly! theyre 3+ stories high, and look liek a GIANT marble on stilts that can shoot lasers. I don’t wanna go into detail unless anyone asks specific questions. There’s just TOO many stuff to talk about it one post haha
I will go into the mansion though
Tumblr media
This is the mansion, or the main oarts of it at least! Ignoring the interior, this is it! It started with only the main room at first, but expanded to have a tall corridor with Alven’s arrival. Then people just started adding rooms from there. It’s VERY tall! It’s taller than a 2-3 story HOUSE in there. It’s so tall, Peter could practice swinging using the huge coloumns dkhdkh. It’s also very long, so if you don’t run, you won’t reach the end after a while.
The interior for the main room and Tall corridor is very Victorian and Elegant. So lots of golds and whites for the main room. In tne Tall Corridor, it has a lot of cool colors- purples and darker but not edgy-reds. There’s almost a permanent sun/moon ray from the windows flowing into the floor.
When we (the teens) started moving in this year, I’m pretty sure Jaiden didn’t fill up the whole corridor just because there’s so many of us. So he made our own living quarters sub-room
The way the mansion works, is that it;s always bigger on the inside. So no matter how small thae main room might be, once you open a door, it’s bigger than what it might feel like from the outside. Also, for the mansion- it has no exterior. On the outside, it’s two big doors. But yeah, if you look outside the windows, you see the meadow. Which is weird... because one time, someone crashed into Jaiden’s room via the window from the outside- but my brain hurts trying to explain how that’s possible
Tumblr media
The above is a VERY crude simplified version of our living hallways!! I’m too lazy to draw and assign which door is what- but MJ and Peter’s doors are across the hall from/in front of each other. Me and kris have rooms next to each other, and so on. The interior here is like a cozy and simple hotel, and we all have our own rooms.
Here’s our old post about our headspace! Some updates are:
Farmhouse: nobody lives there anymore; Jamie moved in to a deeper level of the mansion somewhere only Cahra and Jaiden can get to properly
The Bunker: empty... everyone moved out and into the Mansion (Withe the exception of Matthew but he’s.. dormant now)
Toriel’s cottage: described as a very otherworldy area not because it’s alien, but because it feels so nice and calm, that it feels unreal. The sun shines so nice and peeks through the trees in a pretty way all the time
Crowley’s apartment: we don’t know where it is and we never will
General stuff about our headspace:
Jamie discovered it more than made it. Not all of us can edit or make things from thin air but some people can! (see: Jaiden and Crowley).
Some areas we didn’t make, and just appeared with more exploration OR when someone splits. Toriel didn’t make her cottage, it was just like the brain made it for her without us asking. Same for Fluttershy. For Crowley, he had to make his apartment and Bentley from scratch
After that, I can’t give much advice for your headspace <:-) meditation is definitely key, and trying to connect to your headspace more might help! From what we;ve seen, every system has different “headspace rules” (like for example some behave very realistic where instead of summonign a sofa, they need to order one or build one ikea style. For us, we have magic, some don’t, etc)
The headspace is a ‘pwerful’ place!! So With enough practice you should be able to make small things if not big things. What you wanna add, go for it! If it’s big and permanent, then talking to your system members and asking for what they might like can give you ideas!

Kris was still very tired, and still hungry, and had so many more questions that they wanted to ask. But a lot of that drained away when they stepped into the forest that was so familiar to them, just seeing the path back into town through the trees. They unconsciously rubbed their once-shackled wrist as they gazed at the sky, trying to determine what time it was. Well, the sun was well up by now, so... it was hopefully lunchtime?
They trudged through the trees, rubbing the bags under their eyes and feeling the ache in their chest slowly dissipate. The old bunker, and the church beyond that, were starting to become visible as they went on. Strange how a ratty and hostile place like Home Town could suddenly feel safe and familiar after the experience that they’ve had.
Mom will probably be mad at me.... the thought brushed across their mind, and they checked their phone to see if they’d gotten any messages, especially since returning. There wasn’t anything; even checking through their texts just got them the last message Toriel had sent them before this all happened, which was a reminder for them to pick up their paycheck at the grocery store or Sans would eat it.
They frowned over that, but when they looked back up they forgot that instantly. They could see Asriel standing beside the bunker, texting furiously on his phone.
Asriel.
Asriel!
“---!” They ran. He didn’t look up in time before they’d grappled him around the waist, almost knocking him over, their face burying into his collarbone. Hugging him felt weird with all the chains and buckles. They didn’t care. He was home. Honestly, they’d thought they would have to go up there to College themselves just to see him, at the rate that he was being. But--
“UH woah Kris? Kris?” For a moment he was trying to pull them off, but that just made them cling to him even tighter.
Brother, it’s my brother. Their Asriel. Kris had been doing a lot of crying recently too, but they found it happening yet again. Small tears rising and falling down their cheeks. They hoped that he wouldn’t notice. They weren’t trying to encourage it, it just came out.
“Aaaaa get off, oh my, god,” he was saying, but there wasn’t any bite behind it. In fact, to their surprise he was hugging them back, bending a little as if to protectively cover them. His grip was so tight. If they looked up maybe he would have been fighting some tears of his own; almost sounded like it, as he murmured, “You have any idea what I’ve been going through you crazy fuck?”
Nope, Kris thought. Their stomach growled. They’d become lost for words and, at least momentarily, for questions.
They just held onto him, since he was actually letting them. Though eventually he pulled them off, looking left and right--and half-turning to gaze at the bunker they were standing in front of. His bloodshot eyes were restless; Kris wiped their own tear-streaked face. “Hey, there’s actually---um, hmm. I think we gotta talk to each other about some stuff.”
Some stuff? Oh, right. The words tumbled out finally, “Talk about College.”
“What, no, I mean-” Another glance to the bunker. “I’ll uh, ah, I’ll tell ya all about my cool exploits later. This is more important, come on.”
He held them by the shoulder and led them roughly from the iron doors. To the old church. It was apparently as good a place as any.

Delta Rune Speculation
So it’s been two weeks, and there’s already 200 plus fics on AO3 and dozens of remixes and arrangements of the soundtrack on YouTube. That’s not even touching on the theories that are coming together. I recently saw one theory that double downed on the whole discarded classroom with toys thing, with the Darkners basically being a “Toy Story” scenario and the Spade King trying to pull a “Small Soldiers” scenario.
And while the parallels between the Darkners and assorted toys, and the layout of the Dark World and the Classroom, are all too much of an overlap to ignore, I suspect that there’s something more to the whole game than simply toys coming to life and wanting revenge for not being played with. I had some thoughts that I contributed in my reblog of that person’s theory, but this post is a little bit more meta, and concerns itself primarily with the tone of the final game, if and when it gets completed. But first, we need to talk a little bit about Undertale. I’ll make it quick, I promise.
Simply put, the big thing that made Undertale stand out was how your choices distinctly affected the world you were in, and the way people responded to you based on those choices. The sheer difference in tone and content between True Pacifist and Genocide is about as different and distinct as you can get in any game that features multiple endings, especially when many games opted to make the multiple endings contingent on last second choices (Deus Ex instantly comes to mind) rather than being something that you had to commit to. Not only that, but even the small choices in the sense of dialog, the order in which characters were spoken to, and even the use and contents of your inventory meant that the game had more “immersion” in the sense of responding dynamically to player choice than a lot of Triple A games with hyper-realistic graphics engines.
The way Undertale responded to different choices was a twist, then attraction, and finally a statement about how people saw the world and interacted with it. Especially those who thought that actions taken in this isolated digital environment had no consequences beyond that environment. It was a game about how people acted when they had tremendous power to influence the world.
Therefore, I think that the meaning of Delta Rune’s “your choices don’t matter” and “nobody can choose who they are in this world” is that the game will be about how people respond when confronted by circumstances they can’t control.
For more of my rambling, click the link below.
I’ll be addressing three main points: The nature of the Dark World and the Fountains of Darkness, the Dichotomy between how choice is handled in the Light and Dark Worlds, and the few clues that we have about W D Gaster and his influence.
1. The Nature of the Dark World.
The playing card themed enemies, the puzzle pieces, the chess board and the crowned checker piece, plus some of the hints about Ralsei’s nature and origin, all indicate that the Darkners have some connection with the toys in the unused classroom and probably the materials and objects in the supply closet as well. (I still do not know what those things were in the opening area of the Dark World that shot bullets at Kris, or the significance of all that black gooey dark stuff apparently coming out of the eye shaped structures.) Susie is not the type of person to let her guard down and just skip class with Kris while playing make believe all day... at least not at the start of the game... so the events of Chapter One had some foundation in reality.
This brings us to the fountains and the legend Ralsei shares. Everything hinges on a classic balance between opposing forces, in this case Light and Dark. Too much of one or the other will break the world in some way, and in this instance, there is an excess of Darkness. Under the direction of the mysterious Knight, and the Queen that only Jevil mentions if you kick his ass, the Spade King is seeking to upset the balance by increasing the Darkness. Assuming that Kris, Susie, and Ralsei don’t stop these fountains, then the same force at work in the Dark World that drew Susie and Kris into it will spread beyond the school, and into the rest of the town.
It is my position that Darkness in this case, represents Imagination, and its ability to create worlds symbolically. Keeping a balance between the physically real and the mentally real is important; too much of the physical and you end up in an All Work And No Play Makes Jack A Dull Boy scenario. The other way around, you spend too much time daydreaming - or consumed by anxiety - to deal with the actual problems in front of you. And just by talking to the people in Hometown after school, we can find all sorts of stuff that bothers people. Toriel and Asgore’s estrangement, Noelle’s father and her worries about him, Alphys being lonely, and so on. In a Dark World where people’s thoughts and ideas take on physical forms, these everyday worries become living nightmares. It is THAT scenario that the Fun Gang will have to prevent or reverse from Chapter Two onward.
2. In Which World Do Choices Not Matter?
No matter which way you play Delta Rune, you leave the Dark World at the end. In that sense, none of the choices you made matter. Only if you did a pacifist run, you have the chance to go back and say goodbye to a number of characters you encountered before. Sort of an Undertale Epilogue Lite. If you went to town on everybody, you get chased back to the Light World instead. So in a way, your choices DID matter.
On the other hand, no matter what you do in the Light World, you’re still Kris, the token human in a monster town, with estranged parents and an older brother that probably outshines the heck out of you if all those trophies and award certificates mean anything. You can’t help smooth things over between Toriel and Asgore, you can’t even hint at Undyne and Alphys getting together, and no matter what you tell Noelle, she’s still got a one track mind regarding Susie and is concerned that you are pranking her again. About all you can do is choose to be mean or nice to Onionsan; everyone else still thinks you’re some weird creepy human kid with a history of pranking, whose main redeeming feature as a person is apparently some skill at the piano. Nothing you do can change that, even if being more talkative than normal is out of character enough for folks to notice.
But then again, in the Light World, nobody can choose who they are. Choices don’t matter because so much of Kris’s life is defined by everyone else. And even those lives are more defined by primal fears like Toriel’s loneliness and deep seated resentment, Asgore’s pushover-ness, Mr. Holiday’s health, Alphys’ anxiety, and so on and so forth.
As the Dark World starts to influence the rest of town, and imagination and thought starts to overwrite physical reality, the Fun Gang’s choices will suddenly carry more weight. Maybe not enough to change everything once the Fountains are sealed, but enough to make a difference. Such as the difference between Noelle being totally inconsolable over the loss of her father, and Noelle having the opportunity for closure. Or Toriel at least agreeing to be civil towards Asgore, even if they still never get back together. Or Burgie being able to find a much better job. :P
Or Kris being seen not as “the human” or “Asriel’s brother” but as Kris, a person in town with more depth than just a history of pranks and a creepy disposition.
3. Oh Gaster, Where Art Thou?
The announcement for the Demo, the “character / vessel creation” process at the beginning, the music playing during the vessel creation sequence, the Man who gives Kris an Egg if he is found, the Entry 17 Sound FX from the cell phone in the Dark World, and the slowed down version of the same sound playing around that Mysterious Bunker south of town all point towards Gaster’s involvement in the events of Delta Rune, one way or another. Given the limited information available so far, it’s not entirely clear if he’s working towards increasing the amount of Darkness, towards stabilizing the imbalance, if he’s simply observing events with no regard for the outcome, or if for some reason he requires US as observers for the events of Delta Rune, whatever they are.
But using what little we know, we can make a few educated guesses.
First, the Egg Kris can get from the Man behind the tree, who cannot be seen and will vanish if the Egg is not accepted, is the ONLY item from the Dark World that stays the same back in the Light World. The swords become pencils, and all the other stuff accumulated in the Dark World becomes the Ball of Junk that Kris does not want to throw away, but the Egg is still an Egg. Sort of. It can be put into Asgore’s Fridge, but if this is done, somehow it turns the pickle jar into another Egg. Which raises a number of questions. Unless you hold onto it for later in the full game, or throw it away, this is the only thing you can do with the Egg as far as I know. Almost as if the only reason it exists in the world is so that Asgore can have something to eat besides pickles.
Second, Jevil’s misanthropy follows his interaction with a visitor to the kingdom, and I do not remember if this visitor was specifically stated to be the Knight mentioned by Jevil or the Spade King. The way he treats the entire world like a game fits the same meta as Flowey’s attitude after being stuck in a Determination fueled time loop for ages in Undertale, but it also aligns with the Darkner world’s toy theme. And of course Seam drops the “darker yet darker” line on us regarding his view of the world after dealing with Jevil... but at the same time, this is a literal Dark World. Kris and Susie noticed that the light was getting low in the school hallway before they even stepped inside the supply closet, so it’s not out of the question that Gaster’s experiment, whatever it was, involved discovering the Dark World.
And, while this is purely me stacking conjecture on top of conjecture here, keep in mind what I said earlier about the Dark World being a world where the power of Imagination can literally create a world. Then consider one of the lines of the Gaster Followers from Undertale: Gaster fell into his own creation. As Gaster was the Royal Scientist, it seemed logical to infer that his creation was some sort of machine or technology, such as the CORE or whatever is under the sheet in Sans’ workshop in Snowdin Town. But maybe what he fell into was a completely different reality... possibly one of his own design.
(Note to self: Undertale / Secret Of Evermore Crossover Fic. Add it to the list.)
Third, the vessel we are asked to create at the start of Delta Rune has the word Goner as part of the filenames of the assets. Its appearance also matches that of the other Gaster Followers in Undertale; greyscale, uncanny valley, and just different enough from the character we end up seeing in the game (Kris) to make the similarities stand out. Keeping in mind we still don’t know what the significance is of the Gaster Followers or Goners is in Undertale, or how exactly they relate to Gaster himself. In the completed game, though, we may have the opportunity to find out... behind the bunker doors south of town, where the slowed down Entry 17 sound is playing. (It’s also location 17, so there’s a definite number element going on here.) The thing about bunkers if that they are almost always made to protect something inside them. So unless this is a fallout or storm shelter for the folks in town (and we can’t read Gerson’s book in game so we have no idea what the political climate is between humans and monsters is in this world, though if they were really bad then somebody would probably mention it in dialog) then it’s probably intended to keep the people of the town from finding something. Like an experiment that went wrong. Or went right, for that matter.
Or, maybe the bunker is one of those less common cases where it protects everything outside it by locking something inside, for any of the reasons already stated. Either way, there might be a real True Lab situation down there.
Finally... has anyone else besides me noticed that the graphics in the background during the Vessel Creation Sequence look almost exactly the same as the background of the Fountain of Darkness that Kris and Susie use to go home, just without the playing card suites? Where exactly is that taking place?
One last thing that brings my whole post full circle; regarding the ending cutscene before the credits and Don’t Forget song, I wonder if the entire thing isn’t just Kris’s nightmare; the body rips out the Soul that used to be inside and locks it up, and is free to do who knows what after that. If Kris is aware that the player is influencing them in any way, that whole sequence could be brought on by their fears about losing autonomy, either partially or entirely.
Which brings us back to the whole “your choices don’t matter” thing.

There are a few people that needed to go a long time ago and d is one of them she's a huge a****** to my husband. Little fix her wagon
There's more happening and it's broad scale huge items going on
-there's a war in the Ukraine and we're going to start assisting and we're going to wipe out the Russian forces that is true really NATO is going to move in they usually suck so we have to help them out but we're tired of watching this stuff tired of this a****** doing things successfully to his own people and clothing about it and say he can do stuff to us he's a little imp and we wipe his forces out everyday pretty soon he won't have any and it's going to come down to it shortly just sending tons of them to try and get stuff and they can't it just keep sending people and they're sending them to the bunkers and they're going to send them in aftermax and it's going to be over thankfully crap
-they're going after the bunkers and they're doing it all night and this morning and it's the pseudo empire who's losing and the warlock we're taking them they are in receipt of almost all of them in South America with the exception of 10% of them at 5% in Brazil and 3% and 2% in the Amazon. The Amazon will fall in moments of course possibly Brazil too. Other areas Mexico is at 10% and 5% and they're not pushing real hard this morning you probably still be there and the south is that around 2% and 3%, they're actually going to fall momentarily and in California area they're at about 10% and 5% and it will fall this morning and out in Canada they're 3% and 2% of the fall this morning it's in the west and the Midwest is at about 4% and 1% and going to fall momentarily and expect all of these to be cleared out for the most part except for Mexico so far and the upper Midwest is a 10% and 5% we expect in the fall this morning and Northern New England is at 40% and 30% and it'll be there probably tonight they'll fall to the morlock and they're more like will be facing the Max and won't be able to stop themselves this is what the max are going to say thank God I really need to hear it this s**** this s*** heads. And yeah you're a stranger too Biden. There's a huge number of things happening it's a war and yeah pretty old doesn't make you the good guy stupid s*** Biden. There's a couple more things going on with this bunker war is huge
-in the eastern hemisphere they've taken over most of the bunkers today they're going to go after the remainder Pakistan and India are 10% and 5%, they intend on taking them fully and they did take over the ones that are there, the Sahara they're way too war it's at 10% and 20% and pretty much where the other bunkers are out the movie dune will begin and save in the west with Mexico and dune. Southern Europe is now being taken by the warlock whole. Europe is at 30% and 20% and they're preparing right now to go after them northern Europe has been taken whole and the movie is going to be brewing and possibly might be today because they're going in the hole to try and get the ships that are ready.
-there are a lot of people who are trying to get the motor into the hard knock kicker 5150 and they're trying to also build the Kris frame. So far there's not very many people who have hard knock kicker 5150 and the ones that do figured out that his frame is not strong enough mostly the hard way and they're reinforcing it it's going on it's small but people are getting the respect and they're not burnging themselves on purpose and this happening in Asia too and they did succeed.
-the Eastern hemisphere is going to be in darkness shortly the warlocks are going to attack those remaining bunkers that there's a couple more areas I ran a wrecked desert and that's about 10% and 20% and then go be desert 30% and 20% Saudi Arabian desert at 40% and 30% and the Sahara Wednesday Saudi Arabian desert are very tough and very big the bunker size is larger much larger those are going to be larger wars and dune is in as a Sahara and Saudi Arabia and in Mexico those monsters are larger and they're hard to get and that's why the movie has taken place there's showing people that is tougher and it's having this war and the sense back because it's just not very clear and that's what they're saying it really isn't
-there is a blockade here and it is getting stronger and stronger as the pseudo empire loses bunkers in areas they're being stuck here a lot of it and this other blockades there's some around Italy not really a ton there's a few in a certain area of the Middle East there's one really big one around part of a huge island yeah they have the Islands located all of them and they want to take them over. That's correct in order to take over there more or less have to wipe out everyone and they plan on doing that well that's a friend if there was one
My husband says that last line and it's true they're really nice people holy crap
-Stan wisinski is out of the pseudo empire this morning we don't want you waking him up and going over this math and bothering people and he's being sued by the owner of storm Western development for what he was doing there and he should be he was a huge f****** a****** Mr nuclear missile is telling people too which is illegal I hate that piece of s*** and he wants me to get a few lawyers teams together and go after and in my present time and I'm going to do that he's getting beat up and his stuff is in certain places it's near Orlando and they want that area cuz he's doing nothing so being a damn nuisance he has other places Oregon has fallen but he has bases there that they want and they're going to take them over he has bases in several other areas that they're going after summer in LA and outside of La there's and he is being taken over and they're they're actually doing it right now and he doesn't like it
-a couple more things and yes it was these people are excruciatingly annoying and it was never bring you to court to stan we're going to court with you Stan. He's really getting angry and he doesn't want to be talking about these axle fools we have a lot to talk about is being pushy but he does that it's helpful but really he's pushing all the time and people keep talking about these idiots he wants them done he wants to see a few lines and wants them done and I agree this is annoying as hell
-let me show you orders to stop these people from and taking up our time
Hera
-tell you what I'm coming in there to get rid of them everyone's just talking to you such a waste of damn time is anybody going to help me do this I go over there and waste them that's why it's working
Bitol and Goddess Wife
They're telling me all the time we're hitting these freaks and we're getting stuff done and it's true I've got to report here right now I'm handing it out
Thor Freya
We do understand that but I understand this I can correlation that's almost direct and it shouldn't be so we're going to have to look at it he's thinking it too why would getting rid of these sellouts you doing helping us so much and it's really because they're in the way just being these blobs so we have to be careful but and take it over but we're going to do that now I understand what you say he was just sitting here letting him rot. We're going to take care of business and fighting each other a little on it so he's going to go to court and stick these hearing assholes up her butt for like years if we just let them sit here
Nuada Arrianna
Olympus
That's better that's what it is so you can go to court with all of them so you can sit there and stare at them say they're doing the job when they're in the way
Hera
It's really what I've been saying but it's true and I'm not going to be accused of helping these people cuz I'm out there doing the job correctly

man i love the idea that gaster just encrypts his notes in wingdings bc that really seals the fact that sans was one of the people he was talking to in his letter
(this is a decently-sized tangent so the rest is going under the cut)
Like, it does throw up into the air who the other one was; imo it's pretty clear that gaster is sans/papyrus' dad, so it makes sense that he taught sans wingdings, but alphys?? the fanon other person the note was written for?? Did he teach her wingdings for the purpose of having these encrypted notes?? If you break into sans' lab (he's ok with it dw) you find stuff written in a language you can't decipher, so Sans probably still writes his research notes like that, but we don't see anything hinting towards alphys being in a similar boat
(also, hate the theory that the reason why you can't read sans' notes is because is handwriting is so bad. you literally read his handwriting perfectly fine with the whole sock joke thing. and also "don't forget")
Speaking of "don't forget," that HAS to be a picture of gaster and two other people, we're all agreed on that, right?? Sans is the only person who remembers gaster because a) his research is focused on timelines, i'm sure he recognized something there and b) he has that child's drawing in his lab
"ah but maybe the three people are suzie, ralsei, and kris!!!" yeah okay maybe, but it could be literally anyone if we start thinking like that so just go along with this okay?? because if it's gaster, then the song at the end of deltarune ch. 1 is a LOT more fun to look at:
When the light is running low And the shadows start to grow And the places that you know Seem like fantasy There's a light inside your soul That's still shining in the cold With the truth The promise in our hearts Don't forget I'm with you in the dark
Like, first of all, to me this is referencing why Kris isn't supposed to be out at night (and maybe why Undyne never makes it to your house???) It's written as a positive thing, but, like, gaster is a creepy dude and based on what happens when you go to his bunker in ch 2 he's practically a creepypasta in-universe (and kris KNOWS something, something they either won't tell us or don't want us to know. I'm still holding to "gaster is 'helping' kris the same way he 'helped' jevil and spamton and that the reason why spamton neo's fight makes kris so upset is because they realize that they're not going to be able to get out of this)
But like... if you're thinking about it in terms of sans and his note, you've got a scientist who accidentally got himself erased from everyone's memories and then his son, who is somehow still remembering thanks to a drawing. i don't know, having the phrase "Don't forget, I'm with you in the dark" in this final song that closes out the chapter just feels like it means something there, you know? we know already that gaster is watching everything, he's just kinda... in a bajillion pieces so things are a struggle for him + no one remembers he exists, anyway. he IS there, he IS in the dark. man.
