Rito Biology 101, All about Tribes
(Gonna try and write this in universe as much as possible. Also going to use in-game screenshots as visual aids. Get ready for headcanon rambles...)
Anyone who's had significant contact with the Rito knows that they come in different shapes, sizes, and plumage colors. But did you know that many of these Rito are actually separate species, much like Hylians are a separate species from the Sheikah or Gerudo? Well, my friends, now you know!
Today we'll be discussing the various Rito Tribes.
Tumblr media
This fellow here is Teba, the First Warrior of Rito Village, aka Torikirika (Toe-re-key-re-ka). Teba is a member of the Accipi Tribe, noted for their tall stature and sharply hooked beak, much like that of a Islander Hawk. Like the hawks they resemble, members of the Accipi Tribe are quite adept at soaring with minimal flapping of their wings. Fledglings of this Tribe can be noted for usually having a dark beak, which slowly lightens to the typical yellow with dark spot as they age. One should never, under any circumstance, call a member of the Accipi Tribe a hawk as it is a deeply offensive slur. Of course, the same could be said of the other Tribes we'll talk about in a moment.
Tumblr media
This cheerful fellow is Kass, the Loresinger of Torikirika. (The Loresinger is more or less the record keeper of the village, though they often travel outside of their settlements these days to explore ruins, or search out historical relics or documents. You can tell he's the Loresinger by the pin he wears behind his left eye.) He's a member of the Arini Tribe. Members of the Arini tribe typically have solid beak colors, usually darker colors, and large, powerful flight muscles. This is because they flap their wings constantly in flight. A side effect of this however, is that Arini Warriors excel at melee combat, especial the spear. Trust me, an Arini spearman (or spearwoman) in battle is a sight to behold! They can also ascend a bit more rapidly that some other Tribes, though personal training plays a bigger role in that. Male Arini Rito posses a large crest, which is unfortunately mostly obscured in this image by the Loresinger Badge and the angle. Females lack this particular feature. Also of note, Arini Rito are the only tribe that does not grow pluma feathers at all, these feathers are ornamental and take on an appearance similar to human hair.
You may note the markings behind Kass' eyes. These are actually a kind of lightweight face paint! It's a common custom among Arini Rito to mark their faces with circles (which indicate their career by color, bard in this instance), and a series of lines representing their family. The bottom line represents the wearer, then their spouse, then each of their children in order of age. (You can see two of his five daughters here.)
Tumblr media
This is Elder Kaneli, a member of the Bubo Tribe. While not all members of this Tribe are quite this large, they are typically taller than most of the other Tribes. In spite of their owl like appearance, they do not have considerably better night vision than other Rito. However, they do posses the same directional hearing capacity as owls and have structures on their feathers making them much more silent in flight. You may note his beard, this feature seems to be unique to the Bubo Tribe, and yes, it is made of pluma feathers and not hair.
Tumblr media
This is Saki, the Healer of Torikirika and Teba's wife. Her two piece garb is a signal that she is the Healer, as she's not expected to be on the front lines and has no need for the traditional leather armor most Rito wear. Individuals brooding also wear similar clothes, by the way. Anyway, she's a member of the Cardu Tribe, perhaps the most uniquely patterned of the Rito Tribes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Perhaps one of the most famous Rito of all, Champion Revali. He's a member of the Cristatta Tribe, pronounced, “Cris-tat-ta.” Members of this Tribe are typically shorter than the other Tribes, though Revali was even shorter than most. You may noticed the braided pluma, his Tribe is one of the few in which men grow pluma feathers outside of the side braids. You may also notice he appears to be different colors in the two images. Cristatta Rito have strong iridescent elements in their plumage, meaning that they can appear different colors depending on the light level or angle they are viewed at. Both men and women possess crests, though women's crests are typically half the size of the men's. Women also lack the tufts on the sides of their face, as well as the side braids other Rito Tribes possess. Oh, those red spots on his face are not fledgling spots, they're adult markings he inherited from his mother, quite rare I'm told. His fledgling spots were lighter, and faded during the juvenile stage (around the age of 10). Fun fact: Cristatta Rito have extra bony plates on their skulls to support those large crests.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And here we have a couple examples of the Orni Tribe, which make up the majority of the Rito population. The top image is of Huck, the village tailor. In the background, you can see his brother Nekk, who runs the Brazen Beak. Note that Nekk's plumage is more typical for Rito of the Orni Tribe.
The bottom image is of Amali, Kass' wife. She is also atypical of the Orni Tribe, as most women are a shade of pink. Female Rito often loop their side braids on pieces of wood.
Now you may be thinking, "Wait, you said that the Tribes were different species, so how can Kass and Amali have children together?" Well silly, the same way Hylians and Sheikah can...
Tumblr media
Here we can see most of Kass' brood. Because their father is of the Arini Tribe, and the Rito have patriarchal tendencies, these Arini/Orni hybrids are considered Arini Tribe. However, they'll look more like their mother as the Arini Tribe's more unique features (i.e. the parrot like face) are passed on by the mother's side. They will however have larger flight muscles than your average Orni Tribe member when they grow up (though not as large as their father's). If Kass and Amali had a son, he would eventually grow a crest like his father's.
Tumblr media
This little guy is Tulin, Teba and Saki's child. As you can see, he has inherited his father's plumage colors and the dark beak indicates he'll likely have the sharp hooked beak of his father. For the Accipi Tribe (and the Bubo Tribe), their facial features are passed on by the father's side of the family. Note that his blue eyes are not inherted from his mother, all fledglings have blue sclera (the "whites" of the eye). You can just barely make out the yellowish of his iris in this image. As he ages the sclera will whiten, although it is still possible his eyes may not be the intense topaz color of his father's. His beak will also likely end up being wider and a bit shorter than his father's due to his mother's influence.
Of course, if you had say an Accipi man and an Arini woman or a Bubo man and an Arini woman, then their kids would be random distributions of the unique facial features. For the first example one child may resemble the mother while the other would resemble the father (but with a larger chest and possibly an Arini crest if said child was male). There's really no way to predict the outcome of such pairings, they could have five children that all resemble their mother, or four children that are an even mix.
Tumblr media
This is Harth, the village bower. Now of course the first thing you notice is the wild pluma. This is a clear sign that he has Cristatta Tribe ancestry. Considering he lacks the tale tell crest, his last Cristatta Tribe ancestor was at least three generations back. That's his daughter Molli in the corner sleeping.
There are of course other Rito Tribes, but unfortunately I don't have images of them. There's the Falco Tribe, noted for their small falcon like beaks and plumage patterns, as well as their exceptional diving skills.
Then there's the mysterious Wizal of the Bahreyo (Bah-reoh) Alliance, a group of nations to Hyrule's northeast. It is uncertain if they are actually a Tribe of Rito, but considering the fact that Rito is effectively a term similar to human (Hylian, Sheikah, Gerudo, etc.) or Zora (yes they're multiple species as well), then until there is evidence to the contrary, I shall assume they are Rito as well. The Wizal are distinguished by dark feathers as well as long, colorful beaks and colorful eyes. In fact, it's said that they look much like toucans. They also happen to be powerful mages. There's also the possibility of other Tribes that have been lost to time (not saying they're extinct, just that they may have left Hyrule).
Alrighty then... That's my crazy Rito headcanon, basically my inner science nerd trying to wrap his brain around how different they're skulls would look... So all the names (except Orni Tribe and Wizal) are from Taxonomy. Accipi is from multiple levels that contain hawks and eagles (Accipitridae, Accipitriformes, Accipitrinae). Arini is the taxonomic tribe that contains macaws and a few parakeets. Bubo is from a genus of owls (horned owls, snowy owls, etc.). Cardu is from Procarduelis nipalensis, aka the dark-breasted rosefinch. Why this one for Saki you ask? Well her beak looks finch or parakeet like and I was looking through genera of finches and well... She's got that dark patch on her chest...
Ahem, moving on, Cristatta comes from Cyanocitta cristata, aka the blue jay. Cristata is Latin for "crested" or "tufted" and Revali's certainly that, plus he's got the attitude of a blue jay. Falco Tribe is from falcons, cause I had some OC's with falcon plumage and their father was Accipi Tribe, so I made their mother more falcon like, and ta-da: Falco Tribe. The Wizal are straight up the Wind Waker version of Wizzrobes. Just you know, with bird feet and not quite so crazy in the eyes and more natural beak markings. Though their outfits are similar, especially those fancy orange robes and gold headdresses and such.

More Rito Headcanons!
Something of an expansion of my "Rito Biology 101" post, but I'm not going to bother with the in-universe POV and talking about a couple different things here so...
Here's the original. Now that TotK is out, we got some new info so I'm going to go over things. (Namely a new Tribe for Penn and some thoughts on the aged up kiddos.) There my be some minor spoilers in the images, so I'm going to put them below the read more line.
Minor edit: 7/30/23, realized that one of the new NPC's mentioned something I forgot to talk about!
Tumblr media
New Rito Guy! Penn is a reporter who you team up with for a few sidequests. Clearly he's some kind of pelican, so a quick search on Wikipedia and... Pelca Tribe (from Pelecanus the genus that contains all living pelicans)
So a couple things here. One: the triangles on his little sash reminds me of Kass' scarf. (What did you do to Kass Nintendo?!) Two: his outfit appears to be made of some kind of blue leather. I'm assuming that all Rito wear leather armor basically (except Saki and the little ones). Interestingly, I had drawn an axe that had talon grip handles in the axe head that are sometimes made out of leather sourced from blue monster hides. Doubt that's the case here since he's not a warrior but still...
Tumblr media
His catchphrase... You can see they did the little hook on his beak! Is that yellow on his chest part of his clothes? Hm...
Tumblr media
Including this because, A: this is quite possibly my favorite quote from him and B: you can see he has webbed feets! (Still say they should have given the Rito four toes but whatever...)
Tumblr media
Look at his tiny pen and notebook! (The dangles on his hood are shaped like pens!)
Okay, that's enough Penn for now... In other news, new color morphs just dropped ya'll!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So the first guy looks like he might be a shade or two lighter than Huck, but the second guy is a new color altogether. We gots purple Orni Tribe Ritos now! Really don't have much to say about these two, but more variety is nice.
EDIT: Actually I do have something to say about Ornest. He mentions that all Rito have the ability to manipulate the wind, something I was theorizing to be the case. So, headcanon confirmed!
Moving on to the kiddos!
Tumblr media
Kotts! Again her headband makes me think of her father's scarf and I miss him so much!
Tumblr media
Here's BotW Kotts for comparison. As you can see, the white on her face is starting to fade, and she's lost her "bangs", and her head is starting to be more bird shaped. Rough estimation is that TotK is around 5 years after BotW and I'm assuming that she's 5 during BotW so that would make her 10 in TotK. (I'm going with Rito living around 80 years on average BTW).
Tumblr media
She's almost as tall as Link! Also that dialog speaks to me on like, a molecular level. (She gets up at 10AM BTW) Also note her Saki-like clothing.
Tumblr media
BotW Molli
Tumblr media
TotK Molli
I, uh, don't think she grew at all...
She wants to make cool arrows so her dad will use them with his bows... (Why's there no emoji/emoticon button?! I need a big eyed sad face here!)
Tumblr media
Speaking of her dad... Here enjoy this totally unrelated to anything I'm talking about shot of Harth actually standing! He gets to do stuff in this game guys! (Can you believe I almost forgot he existed when I went from BotW to Age of Calamity? How could I forget this unique bird?!)
Last but not least, Bird Son himself...
Tumblr media
Tulin!!!! Look at this adorable little guy! LOOK AT HIM!!!!
I like to think he admires the hell out of Link and so he's mimicking Link's pose as much as he can. Speaking of which... Get that guy a cowboy outfit and a giant belt buckle!
Tumblr media
Look at him some more!
Tumblr media
So I don't know if that's eyeliner or just natural markings but he's doing his mom's thing and I can't even you guys!
I am SO normal about these birds...
*regains composure*
Okay, so what have we learned from this? Rito start off with blue sclera (the whites of the eye) when they're little. Around 10 or so the sclera becomes white and the irises are blue. Given that neither Kass nor Amali have blue eyes, I'm going to assume at some point their daughters will develop yellow eyes like them. Tulin... Let's just say his eyes stay blue.
Fluffy white baby feathers on the face slowly fade over the years until they their faces are solid colors (Orni Tribe at least). Tulin's little bun, is this like his mom's "hair" or more like his dad's floof? His he tying it back? You can make out something around the base of it in that second image of him so I think so... What if he ends up with a braid like the Ancient Wind Sage? (Why couldn't you just name them Nintendo? You could have just used the Divine Beasts' names and it would have been fine!)
None of the kids have proper tail feathers yet, so I hesitate to call them juveniles... Give them a few more years and they'll probably start growing them.
I like Penn, and pelican/waterfowl Rito fit in with ideas I was having for my fanfic so... Just gotta find a way to fit him in...
I made it so that different Rito settlements have different symbols. Normally these would be found on the cloth around their waist. However, Penn has this unique symbol on his chestpiece... Granted there's some similar symbols around the village but...

Yiga Spear WIP Update!
Tumblr media
So I talked about some things last time, and I did them!
Tumblr media
I figured out how to add callouts in Sketchup.
Tumblr media
The "Pupil" of the Yiga Eye is the pin holding the shaft to the spearhead. It's raised up a little bit above the rest of the emblem.
So I've got a few different ideas for the buttcap.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
One last thing...
Tumblr media
So a few scarce details on the wielder of this spear... If Sooga is the Right Hand of the Inverted Eye, then this guy is the Left Hand. He's primarily a magic user so the spear doubles as a magic staff (hence the crystal dangles).
The marks I've placed on the spearhead are placeholders for some engravings I'm planing on. I looked it up on the Zelda Wiki and the symbols that appear on the circle when Yiga teleport are Hylian Letters and are a ninjitsu reference. My plan was to put those symbols on the spearhead, but Hylian letters are way too complicated for me to even try in Sketchup. I might be able to pull off Sheikah letters instead, but there's apparently there's a downloadable font for Gerudo text, so I might download that and put the letters in the place in MS Paint. I'd rather have them on the model itself cause that way I can indent them or whatever, but I'll have to see how it goes.

A Guide to Rito Village er... Torikirika
Torikirika (Toe-re-key-re-ka) is the Rito name for their settlement on Lake Totori known by non-Rito as "Rito Village." While it is the only Rito settlement accessible to non-Rito after the Great Calamity, it is far from the only Rito settlement in existence.
The term Torikirika most accurately translates into "Home of the Rito People," or more literally "Home of Our People." The word was poorly translated into "Rito Village" eons ago and the Rito themselves don't seem to bother correcting anyone, perhaps because their geographical isolation makes interaction with non-Rito so rare.
... Okay, that's enough in-universe stuff... So in my fanfic, "The Realm Walker," most Rito fled Hyrule after the Great Calamity and I put a world map that shows where their new settlements are at up on DA. (I will warn that it is a huge image though...) Also this is going to be a bit long and rambly, but there's visual aids using in game screen shots...
So, as "The Ballad of Kass" is moving towards events happening in Rito Village, I've decided to do a little expanding of the place because quite frankly Nintendo didn't give these poor birds enough space/didn't properly utilize the space that was given.
Tumblr media
This pillar is located at the end of a lone bridge to the left of the entrance (when approaching from Rito Stable). This is where the Village Archives are, all sorts of historical documents and artifacts are stored in there. Kass is the Loresinger so he's in charge of keeping this stuff secure and preserved and Amali takes over that while he's flying around Hyrule helping Link out. Super secret stuff is in there so it's probably one of only two places the Rito would have actual doors.
Tumblr media
This is one of those lone pillars on the lake, just south of the previous image. This is where the blacksmith shop is located, her name is Vertis (based on Harth's name in the German version) and her roost is on that pillar where the Archive entrance is. (Yes, there's a Korok there, so depending on how you get him, he's either hiding on top of the roost or moved somewhere else.)
Tumblr media
A map view, the red pin is Frita's workshop/roost, she's the town jeweler, though she lets Huck & Nekk sell her wares rather than run her own shop. The Blue pin is Misa & Fyson's roost (at least until he moves to Tarrey Town...) The Yellow pin is Guy's roost, where he lives with his wife and kid. (Yes, I know, he's got a kid that never shows up in game, very suspicious that...) The green pin is Kisli's house, she's an OC I made cause there's not enough guards and Gesane needs to sleep! She's a Bubo Tribe (Owl) Rito loosely based on the red morph of the eastern screech owl. And the pink pin is Gesane's roost.
Tumblr media
Gesane's roost is basically right under Kass and Amali's roost.
Tumblr media
This is more or less where Kisli's roost is, there's some stairs leading down to the area below that bridge cause that's where the Rito food storage area is (next to the three ore deposits in game.)
Tumblr media
And here's where the food stores are. Filled with preserved meat, grains, fruits, etc. I was thinking about a mine or catacombs... but it seems really dumb to be weakening the pillar with mining activity... So there's some caves along the rim of Lake Totori, though they really don't do much in the way of mining after the Great Calamity. Vertis probably gets most of her metal from melted down scrap.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A couple screen shots of the lower area, the second one is right under the Slippery Falcon.
Tumblr media
So this map shows some spots on the lower area of the pillar with the shrine. Originally I was going to have Huck and Nekk (they're brothers), live and do their sewing on the lower level but... The yellow pin is right next to the back landing of their shop! So that's where they live. The blue pin is Harth's bow shop, cause I don't think his roost is big enough for him and his daughter to live in and make bows and sell bows.
Tumblr media
Right next to the armor shop, there's a new bridge that leads to Harth's shop. Just pretend it's there okay! :P
Tumblr media
This is by the entrance to the village, there's an armory here cause weapons aren't allowed in the village proper. (Except for Harth's bow shop, and all the catches of bows and bomb arrows Teba's hidden around the pillar, out of the reach of fledglings of course!)
Tumblr media
So if you go to the right when approaching the village, you see this pillar...
Tumblr media
...which I marked on the map. That's where Revali's roost used to be, huh, fun coincidence that the pin is blue isn't it? Anywhoo, this doesn't relate to "The Ballad of Kass" but in other stories I focus on Revali and this will be relevant then. Also back before the Great Calamity, there was an open market on the third island (counting from Rito Stable, or if you'd rather it's where the salmon pond is). It was called the Eagle's Bazaar and was something of a tourist trap with Rito merchants selling all sorts of goods to visitors. I had a map image showing Link standing there, but it didn't transfer, and you can see it here so, whateves...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And so in these last couple images, I show the emblem for Torikirika. The little boxy G with the wings/E's. Every Rito settlement has a symbol like this, and it is usually found on the cloth "skirt" on Rito armor (or on the chest plate if you're a bigshot Warrior like Teba).

For the WIP game: The Long Nightmare
The Long Nightmare... @unmaskedcardinal going for the dark one! So this particular part of The Realm Walker revolves around Revali falling to Windblight Ganon and spending the next 100 years trapped in his own mind (mostly) as he's used as a puppet by Ganon.
Unfortunately I haven't got any further into it than I did back in August. The fic starts with Revali's POV of the "Return of Calamity Ganon" memory in BotW, but with a twist! All the Champions have their own Sheikah Slates, so they can fast travel to them. Link actually suggested (non-verbally) that they use Vah Medoh to get to the Castle faster (or Zelda figured out what he was trying to say.) In the following snippet, Link, Zelda, and Revali have teleported to Vah Medoh. (Content warnings: brief thought of suicide if a teleportation mishap had occurred, foul language)
Revali, the Princess, and that little knight arrive on Medoh’s tail, intact and their separate selves.  Goddess, if they’d been fused together, he would have just leapt from Medoh right then and there!
Revali wastes no time in opening the gate to the interior and motioning for the two Hylians to enter.  Then he calls upon his Gale to reach Medoh’s control panel and sets course for the castle.  Even from this far away, he can see the swirling Malice around the castle.
He mutters to himself, “Goddess, what a nightmare.”
“Master,” the familiar, feminine voice of Vah Medoh calls to him in his mind, “I am unsure of what is happening, but all of the Guardians beneath the castle are activating.”
“Isn’t that a good thing?  Shouldn’t they activate to repel Ganon?”
“Yes.  However, there is a distinct change in their energy signatures.  Something is wrong.”
“Well, I don’t like the sound of that.  We need to hurry!”
“Understood Master, redirecting all available power to propulsion systems.”
Medoh’s massive frame speeds up and Revali takes out his Slate.  He unfolds it and opens the Mail Rune and types a message to the Princess using the lower screen.
Are you alright?
The upper screen shows a moving envelope and after a moment it indicates the message is sent.  A short while later the Slate chimes.
We’re fine Revali.  Please hurry to the castle!
“Master, your heart rate is much higher than optimal.”
Revali scoffs, “Of course it is!  Calamity Ganon has returned within the heart of Hyrule and the Princess’ power hasn’t awakened yet!”
“Master, you must relax.  It is unwise to go into battle in your agitated state.”
He sighs, “We don’t have a choice.”
They’re making good time at least, Medoh has just crossed Lindor’s Brow.  Revali spots some kind of massive structure of Ancient Sheikah make jutting out from an island in the castle’s moat!  There’s another one just north of the castle and one to the southeast…
Revali’s crest rises, “What are those?”
“Repositories for Guardians.”
“Shouldn’t the lights be blue like yours?”
They’re not, they’re purple…
“Master, something is very wrong…”
Medoh flies past the pillar sticking up from the moat and Revali rushes to the side of his Divine Beast to get a better look.  He can just barely see objects emerging from the pillar, like swarms of angry bees.
“Are those…”
“Guardians.”
Revali can see bright flashes of skirisha (ski-re-sha), or ultraviolet, light below and every feather on his body stands on end.  The Guardians are firing on something, but the beams aren’t in the direction of the castle itself!
“What the hell is happening?!”
“Master, I do not know how this is possible, but it seems that Primary Target has commandeered the Guardians.”
Revali’s heart drops to his talons, “We’re fucked!”
“Master, I have lost contact with my brethren.”
“What?”
Just then something large impacts Medoh and the whole Divine Beasts shakes.  Revali puts his wings against his ears as he hears a horrific screaming in his mind!  Goddess, the sound reminds him of the time he witnessed a Moblin tearing the guts out of a wounded but still alive Tabantha moose with its bare hands!
“Revali!”
Somehow, he hears the Princess’ call.  He flies over to Medoh’s tail to find the Princess and her knight standing outside with looks of great concern on their faces.
“Master,” Medoh calls out as if in tremendous pain, “Please be careful!”
Medoh’s panicking?  Well, that’s not good!  He hears the distinct sound of energy swirling behind him, and looks in that direction.  Strands of electric blue light form into a nightmarish abomination!  Its body is made of Malice and bits of Ancient Sheikah Tech, is vaguely humanoid but has no legs.  There’s only one arm, the other… Goddess, it ripped out one of Medoh’s cannons!  It has a single glowing crystal eye, just like a Guardian!
The fiend lets out a horrifying screech.
“What’s going on?!”  The Princess shouts.
Revali turns to her, “Get to the castle, now!”
“What about you?!”
“I’ve got this,” Revali lies with all the false confidence he can muster.
The knight just nods at him and the two Hylians grab their paragliders, leap from Medoh’s tail and begin gliding towards the castle.
With any luck, these dire circumstances will finally awaken the Princess’ power.  Revali focus on the task ahead of him, this monster that’s been sent after him.
The creature aims its cannon arm at him and fires, and he dodges expertly.  He climbs as high as he can and unslings his bow, before instinctively catching it in his talons.  He tries not to think of it as a bad omen when it starts raining heavily.
The abomination fires repeatedly on Revali but he manages to dodge every shot.  The Champion decides to go on the offensive and turns around to get into a firing stance.  As he drops, he sees the bright skirisha flash and abandons his attack to dive before a deadly laser beam cuts through the air where he had been.
“Shit, this thing’s fast.”

Advanced Wizal Rods
First up, the Specialist Rods...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As one would expect, these rods are used by Wizal mages who specialize in one particular element. The Wizal are based on Wind Waker's version of the Wizzrobe enemy, or Toucan Rito if you'd like, and are featured in my fanfic "The Realm Walker."
I've expanded the element set, as seen in my previous post.
These rods have a special Elemental Crystal and gemstone aligned with their chosen elemental specialty. (For example, a Pyromancer would use a Fire Aligned Crystal and a Ruby.) While a Generalist could summon a fireball, a Pyromancer can rain down fire across a wide area if they so desired. I only showed three specialists to mach with BotW's trifecta, but the other elements shown in the General Rod are available here (just don't have names for them yet). These Elemental Crystals are not available within Hyrule's borders.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here's a closeup of the Archmage's Rod variant.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next up is the Thaumaturgist's Rod. Thaumaturgists are support mages: casting barriers, treating wounds, and creating maps and such. (Possibly also summoning, or maybe that'll be another rod design.)

2 for the wip game
Thanks for the ask! Ooo... my darkest fic (so far). This one's in pieces at the moment, but here's a bit of it, set not long after Zelda seals Ganon in the castle, allowing Revali a moment of clarity after his possession. I'm going to put it below the cut cause there's some possible triggers in here (and it's a little long). CW: vomiting, implied/suggested rape metaphor. This clip is rated M for Mature, you have been warned!
Revali collapses to his knees and falls over, just barely holding himself up with his shaking wings.  The Malice falls from him in clumps, each one making a sickening splattering sound as they hit Medoh’s back.  Suddenly his insides clench, and he hurls for a full minute.
Once that unpleasantness is over, he can hear the thrum of Medoh’s propellers, the hum of the control panel, the sound of wind.  Goddess, he can feel the wind blowing through his feathers!  He can sense the wind currents…  He can see again, through his own eyes!
Fuck! Everything hurts so much!  He has a horrible taste in his mouth…  He stares at the black filth that just came out of his body, staining Medoh’s back.  He can feel how matted his feathers are…  Shit, he can’t fly like this!  The demon’s filth is caked around the base of his beak, his nares, his ears, his…
Revali sobs upon realizing how thoroughly he’s been violated.  He’d retch again, but there’s absolutely nothing left inside him now…
“Master, please hurry!  We don’t have much time!”
Revali looks behind himself, that THING has collapsed into a puddle of filth and scraps of Ancient Sheikah tech.  If he was armed, he’d shoot every bomb arrow he had into that pile, but alas he dropped the precious bow his maternal uncle gave him, and he has no arrows at all.
“What should I do?” he says in a weak, pathetic voice not fitting of the Champion of the Rito.  Goddess what a disgrace he is!
“Get to my control panel!  Hurry!”
In spite of the excruciating pain he’s in, Revali succeeds in pushing himself to his feet.  He slowly stumbles his way to the control panel, one agonizing step at a time.
“You’re doing good Master.  Keep it up!”
“Don’t patronize me!”
Suddenly, a Rito woman of the Orni Tribe appears before him!  She has the usual slightly curved beak, but her feathers are black and… gold?  Wait, why doesn’t she have beak markings?  Every Rito has ultraviolet markings on their beaks, unique to the individual!
Never mind that!  How did she just materialize in front of him?  Is this a hallucination?  Has he lost the last bit of sense that he had?
Wait…  Her braids…  The frame holding them is adorned with Vah Medoh’s emblem!  Her eyes… that blue glow…
“Vah Medoh?!”
The woman speaks, confirming that she is in fact a project of Vah Medoh’s…  Spirit?   “Since you are being stubborn, I shall have to switch tactics,” her feathers bristle, “Get off your tail feathers and get to that control panel now!”
She points at it and while Revali’s in no mood to be sassed by HIS Divine Beast, he complies and heads that way as best he can.  Time’s running out, he can hear the Malice behind him beginning to gurgle again.
“You are almost there,” she attempts to reassure him, “Just keep going, one foot in front of the other.”
He snaps, “I know how to walk!”
He trips, but manages to catch himself on the edge of the control panel and pulls himself up.
“What now?”
Vah Medoh’s projection walks up to him, “We need to lock Windblight out of my systems before it regains its strength.”
“Windblight?”
“It is what Primary Target calls his creation.”
Well, the name certainly fits it…  But, “You can’t call it something else?”
Medoh’s projection tilts her head, “Why?”
“I,” Revali’s voice cracks, “…I’d rather not personify that…  abomination!”
She suddenly looks very… sad.  “I see,” she replies gently, “Very well.  Secondary Target is recovering and we are currently heading straight for Torikirika (Toe-re-key-ri-ka).”
[Torikirika is the Rito name for Rito Village BTW]

Rito Settlement Symbols
Here are some symbols for the various Rito settlements in my LoZ fanfic, "The Realm Walker."  This symbols would be found in various places of each village and on the cloth skirts/sashes worn by the Rito who live there.
Tumblr media
You can see some similarities in some of the designs, this indicates that the settlements are "sister villages."  In the wake of the Great Calamity, most Rito fled Hyrule and they set up towns on the cliff walls of the Great Scar Canyon (the bottomless pit that serves as the game world's north and west borders).  Each village has a corresponding "sister village" on the other side of the canyon (except Miski Village).
The villages are divided into four categories, Hyrule Side (those on they Hyrulean or Eastern side of the GSC), Western Villages, Far Western Villages (completely off the game map), and Lost Villages.  The Lost Villages are ones that were destroyed or abandoned during the Great Calamity.   Suskri Village was located where Kass' hut in BotW is (where you find his diary and the blood moon shrine quest), while Tabantha Village was a mixed Rito-Hylian settlement built on the site of a Rito Camp called Gori (Go-re).
Camps are non-permanent settlements, usually a resting place or outpost or somewhere to gather a specific resource.  They usually don't have symbols associated with them but an exception was made when Gori was converted into Tabantha Village.
In game Rito Village, or Torikirika as I call it, already has a symbol so I didn't try to reproduce it.
Further information:
Hyrule World Map (This is a HUGE image BTW)
Rito Village Tour Guide (A list of places I'm adding to Torikirika, the last couple images show the symbol for it, which is the symbol seen on the cloth sash on the Snowquill Set):
In Game screenshots of where I put some of these villages:

Here's a Calendar for TLoZ I Made Up
I'm not sure if I'll actually start showing dates in my "The Realm Walker" fanfic, but for internally keeping track of things, I figured it would help to make a calendar... So here you go!
To keep things simple, there's 30 days in each month, and 12 months in the year, so 360 days in a year. Each month ends in "gari" or "lini" which comes from what Google Translate tells me are the pronunciations of Greek words for moon (Fengari and Selini), while each day ends in "mera" (which again comes from what Google Translate tells me is the pronunciation for the Greek word for day (Imera).)
So here are the months:
Nagari (Nayru’s Moon)
Daltlini (Daltus’ Moon)
Dingari (Din’s Moon)
Falini (Farore’s Moon)
Malagari (Malanya’s Moon)
Hylini (Hylia’s Moon)
Gustgari (Gustaf’s Moon)
Daphlini (Daphnes’ Moon)
Valgari (Valoo’s Moon)
Jalini (Lord Jabu-Jabu’s Moon)
Undegari (Eleventh Moon)
Duodeclini (Twelfth Moon)
Like the real world, it's a mix of rulers, deities, and numbers. Daltus being the king during The Minish Cap, Gustaf being an ancient king mentioned in The Minish Cap, and Daphnes being the king from Wind Waker. You can bet that the Rito and Zora had something to do with Valoo and Lord Jabu-Jabu getting months named in their honor. The last two months come from the Latin words for 11th and 12th.
Now for the days:
Zephmera (Zephos’ Day)
Dinmera (Din’s Day)
Naymera (Nayru’s Day)
Cycmera (Cyclos’ Day)
Farmera (Farore’s Day)
Dekumera (The Great Deku Tree’s Day)
Hylimera (Hylia’s Day)
So I'm starting the week with Monday, so Hylimera is Sunday. Zephos and Cyclos are from Wind Waker, the frog shaped wind gods that fly around on clouds. Since this is the Hyrulean Standard Calendar you can expect that some of the other peoples have different month/day names. In particular, I'm thinking the Gerudo day names would honor the Seven Heroines mentioned in BotW. Rito might switch out Dekumera for Valmera, likewise the Zora might switch out Dekumera for Jabumera...
And some seasonal information...
Spring: Dingari 1st – Malagari 30th | Spring Equinox: Dingari 19, 20, or 21st
Summer: Hylini 1st – Daphlini 30th | Summer Solstice: Hylini 20th
Autumn: Valgari 1st – Undegari 30th | Autumn Equinox: Valgari 20th
Winter: Duodeclini 1st – Daltlini 30th | Winter Solstice: Duodeclini 20 or 21st
Note that these dates are for the Northern Hemisphere. Considering the tropical state of Faron in BotW, it is either near or on the equator, which would make part of Hyrule be in the Southern Hemisphere.
Bonus: Since BotW released on March 3, 2017 (a Friday), the very first scene of "The Ballad of Kass" takes place Farmera, Dingari 3, 100 PC. (PC standing for Post-Calamity) Though I may do a nod to the Elder Scrolls series and use Eras instead (So, Dingari 3, 100 EotW (Era of the Wilds))...
Questions and comments are welcome!

The Realm Walker announcement thread
General purpose announcement post for my LoZ fanfic, "The Realm Walker."
I've finally gotten around to locking all my stuff on AO3, due to all the AI skimming BS. You now have to have an AO3 account to view it. I'm debating also moving all future story posting to only AO3 instead of cross posting there and on DA.
Needless to say, The Realm Walker is on hiatus until I finish TotK. However, all future updates on the project will be posted to this thread to keep things organized. I will likely make separate posts to announce when new stories have been posted, but progress updates and other announcements will be made here (either through edits or reblogs).
Update: Hiatus over! Attempts to TotK-proof The Realm Walker have failed. Expect references to TotK to trickle in as new chapters are posted. Also I'm going to include little "click for more details" content warnings on each chapter. These will appear with a little arrow you can click to see specific warnings, or you can ignore them to avoid spoilers. I'll also go back and put some in TBoK especially...
Current Progress: "The Ballad of Kass" (TBoK) 14/? chapters posted as of 12-24-23, "The Amnesiac Hero's Quest" (TAHQ) 14/14 chapters posted, "Shifting Tides of Fate" (SToF) 4/? chapters posted as of 9-9-23.
The following are links to my old announcement posts.

So here's my interpretation of what the sword on Sidon's hip in BotW and AoC looks like.
Tumblr media
It's loosely based on the Silver Longsword.
Tumblr media
In universe it's more of a badge of office, but its constructed to be a fully functional weapon as well.
Tumblr media
It will appear in an upcoming chapter of "The Amnesiac Hero's Quest," which is Link's side of the story of "The Realm Walker." I usually include size references with weapons I do, but didn't with this one since it's just a rough concept of the shape of the weapon rather than an attempt at an actual model of the weapon.

Oh, what's this?! A fancy new spear for my Zelda fanfic, "The Realm Walker"?
Tumblr media
Close up of the business end.
Tumblr media
Is... Is that an inverted Sheikah Eye? Hm... I wonder what that's doing there?
Tumblr media
Close up of the buttacap. There's a magic crystal inside, for reasons.
Since TotK had to go and get rid of the Demon Carver weapon and I couldn't fulfill my simple dream of fusing one to a long stick to make a fancy spear, I just made my own damn Yiga spear!
The Yiga emblem is smaller than I'd like, but it's that size cause it's being used as the pin holding the shaft in place. Although, I could make the pin be the "pupil" of the eye and make the symbol bigger...
I might try to simplify the buttcap and and add two smaller magic crystals as danglely bits right by the head of the spear.
And that's about all I have to say about this! Enjoy!

The Ballad of Kass
Shameless advertising for my fanfic! {Currently rated M for mature: graphic violence, suggestive dialog and imagery, profanity} [As of 7-27-23 it has been upped from Teen to Mature]
"The Ballad of Kass" covers Kass journey across Hyrule in an AU of BotW.
Summary: Kass' begins his journey to fulfill his promise to his dear departed teacher. Along the way he'll encounter another living legend as well as uncover secrets he never expected to learn. It's a good thing his sister, Kalia, is tagging along…
I've posted up to chapter 9. (Will update chapter count as needed...)
This is part of my epic LoZ fanfic, "The Realm Walker." Each section of the story (for now) is told from the POV of one to a few characters, and while reading all of them would be helpful for understanding everything, my intent is that it would not be required to read everything to fully enjoy the story.
As of 9-9-23, Chapter 10 has been posted! New Chapters have specific content warnings in a clicky in the chapter notes. (Appears as an arrow you can click on to see specific warnings, or you can ignore these if you don't want spoilers.) I'm going to put these in a few of the older chapters when I get the chance.

Tyto Axe WIP
A WIP of the Tyto Axe, a one handed weapon used by Rito living outside of Torikirika (Toe-re-key-re-ka), aka Rito Village, in my fanfic, "The Realm Walker."
Tumblr media
So these are the variants of the Tyto Axe, the spikes, hook, and hammerback were developed to counter the armor of soldiers from the Bahreyo (Bah-reoh) Alliance (which is to Hyrule's northwest) just in case conflict between them and the Rito arose. The hammerback axe can also be used against Pebblit monsters. The buttcap spike can be used with any of the other three versions or alone as depicted here.
Brown leather is standard leather from animals such as deer, red-brown leather is made from Red Monster hides, while blue leather is made from Blue Monster hides, which is very difficult to work with and requires hours of purification rituals before use. The leather on the secondary handles, designed for use in talons, indicates rank of the user.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Closeups of all the mods...
Here's how big the model is...
Tumblr media
The Buttcap spike is a little over 23 mm long. I'm considering making the handles a little longer.
Tumblr media
Size comparison with a Sketchup guy and some other weapons. Oh what's this, you get a free bonus weapon... The Egret Spear is a one-handed spear used by the Rito in "The Tale of the Realm Walker" set 20-years after the events of Wind Waker.
Tumblr media
Just a quick shot of some axes used by an OC of mine, Rinili. He usually carries two matching axes so he's got six of these on a weapons rack in his roost.
Tumblr media
A quick mockup of Rinili's roost as seen in Chapter 9 of "The Ballad of Kass"! Not to scale at all, and obviously there's no glass table... Anyhoo, it's described as plainly decorated, one of those chests has a spare hammock. In Rito Village, weapons aren't allowed in the village proper (save for Harth's bow shop and the hidden stashes Teba put around the pillar), unless your a Warrior and the village is in crisis that is.

Shifting Tides of Fate
More shameless ads for my fanfic! "Shifting Tides of Fate" is currently rated M for Mature (graphic violence, suggestive dialog and imagery, profanity, references to trauma/PTSD). [As of 7-27-2023 I've upped it from T to M.]
Note: I tried to TotK-proof this fic, and have failed. So starting in chapter 4 there will be little nods to TotK. The one in Ch 4 is a little spoilery, but hopefully not too spoilery. Though you should expect more as the story progresses.
"Shifting Tides of Fate" is a direct sequel to "The Amnesiac Hero's Quest," although I'm hoping I can write it in a way that it's not completely necessary to read TAHQ to enjoy SToF.
Summary:
Finally, after 100 years and five days, Mipha is free from Ganon's control and herself again. Now she can finally rectify her failure a century ago... She and Link can free her fellow Champions, storm the ruins of Hyrule Castle, and finally put an end to Calamity Ganon and free Princess Zelda.
It's a miracle she held out as long as she did, and she's worried about Revali, the problem is she and Link will have to cross the entirety of Hyrule to get to him. Well, on the brighter side, they'll be able to get away from everyone in the Domain's incessant nagging about when they're getting married...
Chapter 1 is up, and this post will be updated with each chapter. This is part of "The Realm Walker" which is mostly BotW focused, but has a heaping helping of Twilight Princess and Wind Waker, with sprinkles from the rest of the LoZ franchise (for flavor).
As of 9-9-23, Chapter 4 is posted!

Rito Settlements in "The Realm Walker"
So in my LoZ fanfic, I propose that after the Great Calamity, most of the Rito (who had settlements spread out all over Tabantha, Hebra, and the Ridgelands BTW) fled Hyrule proper. This event came to be known as the Great Migration and had two main reasons. The first reason was because the Rito were fleeing the increase in monsters and threat of Guardians. The second reason was that many Rito were angered over the death of Champion Revali and/or felt that the Hylian Royal Family had failed their sacred duty and wanted nothing to do with non-Rito ever again.
This also led to a schism among the Rito people themselves and the newly established settlements outside of Hyrule limited their ties with the Rito in Hyrule. As a result every settlement basically just does whatever they want/each Elder runs things how they see fit, and there's no central leadership. Before the Great Calamity, "Rito Village" (Torikirika (Toe-re-key-re-ka) as it's properly known) was their capital and home of their Chieftain.
Most of these settlements were built into the cliffisides of the Great Scar Canyon (the bottomless pit at the west and north ends of the map in BotW). Now for visual aids!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The top image shows about where Tikri (Tick-re) Village is. Like most of the cliffside settlements its a mix of roosts carved into the cliff walls and wooden structures like you'd see in Torikirika (though more securely fixed to the cliff walls). The bottom image shows where this is on the map. The arrow indicating Link is right above another settlement, Kariki (Ka-re-key) Village. Kariki Village will be featured in upcoming chapters of "The Ballad of Kass."
The Rito settlements are built in pairs like this so they can keep in touch via couriers. The winds that blow you back towards Hyrule in-game are seasonal in "The Realm Walker." Spring/Summer they blow towards Hyrule and Fall/Winter they reverse, which makes traveling between the different sides of the canyon difficult. Skilled couriers know paths through the canyon that can allow them to avoid the worst of the winds but it's still dangerous to fly through the canyon out of season.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These two images show the location of Gorika (Go-re-ka) Village, the closest settlement to Torikirika. It's more or less south of Dragon Bone Mire.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is where the largest Rito settlement is, Takandi (Ta-kan-de) Village. This is where Kass and his sister Kalia are from. Kass left his home town to apprentice under Kaneli's sister (Galini), who was the Loresinger at the time. Unfortunately, Kass had little skill with stringed instruments, but as luck would have it, he met his teacher Sheikar on one of his trips and was allowed to study the accordion (and learn from the in general Sheikah) under Sheikar for some time.
Takandi Village was built on top of an abandoned settlement, rumored to have been established more than 10,000 years ago by both the Rito and Gorons to mine resources to build the Divine Beasts and Guardians (and a bunch of other Ancient Sheikah Tech). The vast majority of the settlement is built into the cliff walls with fewer wooden structures than other Rito settlements. "Village" is a bit of a misnomer as the population of Takandi Village would easily classify it as a town or perhaps even a city. But the Rito have a habit of just sticking "Village" at the end of their settlement names...
The Rito living here are generally more private than in other settlements, especial with... *ahem* ...adult matters. Other Rito often regard them as being as uptight as Hylians. The Village also has a not entirely undeserved reputation for being socially backwards (to put it politely) [As mentioned in Chapters 4 & 7 of "The Ballad of Kass".]
BTW: None of these settlements reach all the way to the top of the cliffside for defensive reasons.
Tumblr media
This here is the location of Koraki (Ko-ra-key) Village, which just so happens to be Amali and Saki's hometown. They migrated to Torikirika to apprentice for Loresinger and Healer respectively. And yes, this is how Kass and Amali met... Unfortunately, it's almost always snowing/overcast in game so it's nearly impossible to get good screenshots of the cliffsides where the two nearby villages are.
Warning: Huge image...
A political map of Hyrule and the surrounding lands I made. I've marked all the Rito Villages here if you'd care to see them all. The four point stars are camps the Rito have set up as restpoints and waystations. They're not permanently inhabited and the ones inside the Great Scar Canyon are lumber camps as there's a forest down there.
In summation:
Hyrule Side
Torikirika (Toe-re-key-re-ka) [Rito Village]
Suskri Village (Gone) {was where Kass' hut on Washa's Bluff is}
Gorika (Go-re-ka) Village
Kariki (Ka-re-key) Village
Koraki (Ko-ra-key) Village
Western Villages
Takandi (Ta-kan-de) Village
Tokali (Toe-ka-lee) Village
Kiriski (Key-re- ski) Village
Tikri (Tick-re) Village
Miski (Me-ski) Village
Far Western Villages
Gotiri (Go-tea-re) Village
Suskiri (Sus-key-re) Village
And for funzies, one last thing...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some screenshots of the northeast edge of the map in BotW (from the top of the labyrinth island). I used this to determine the landscape of Holoryna and where the Great Scar Canyon ends. You can just barely make out that the pillars at the edge of the canyon kind of loop back to the mountains to close it off. There's also a couple of islands and it looks like the shoreline dips behind those mountains so that's where I put the inlet I was planing on having.
