Benlor oneshot
Fluff. Lot’s of wholesome stuff here.
Ben and Taylor were lying on the floor of his room. The credits to their favorite movie, When Harry Met Sally, started to roll.
Taylor had her head rested on Ben’s chest, smiling and humming softly.
“What should we watch tomorrow? La La Land, or When Harry Met Sally again?”
Ben tapped a message in Morse code, which Taylor taught him, on her back.
I’m ok with whichever.
Taylor hummed softly, thinking. Ben recognized the tune as A Lovely Night from La La Land.
Let’s watch La La Land. Ben tapped.
Taylor chuckled and lifted her head up. “You recognize the tune?” He nodded in response. She sighed, smiling as she rested her head again. “I love that song. And that movie..”
Ben looked at her with a sad smile. Taylor knew.. he always told her he wished he could sing for her. That’s why watching musicals together was always so bittersweet.
Taylor shifted up a bit to rest her head on his collarbone and gave him a gentle look. She knew Ben could make noise. He just chose not to.
Humiliation and embarrassment and disappointment over being what he felt to be a failure always stopped him.
And Taylor knew this. And she completely respected that. But she wanted Ben to trust her with even a fragment of his gentle tune. After all, she is his girlfriend.
“Can you hum the first half of the song?” She asked.
He gave her an unsure look.
“Please?” She asked, giving him her best puppy dog eyes.
He sighs and gives her a defeated smile
He hums the first part of the song and she rests her head in the nook of his chest and collarbone.
The sun is nearly gone… no lights are turning on.. a silver light that stretches to the sea..
Taylor felt the vibrations buzz through her head, which brought her immense joy. Yes, his humming was scratchy, had occasionally pauses and breaks, but she loved it. It was like a mechanical whir that she could listen to for hours.
Once it got to the second part of the song, Taylor broke in. “You say there’s nothing here, but let’s make something clear, I think I’ll be the one to make that call~”
Ben gives her a surprised look. Her singing wasn’t great. She has a deepish voice, yet is trying to imitate the airiness from the original singer, coming off strained and forced. But Ben loved her voice. It was like the perfect strum of a guitar.
After she reached the end of the second half, she gives him a crooked smile and he returns with a sheepish grin.
She reaches over to kiss the tip of his nose. “I just know for a fact.. you were a lovely singer..”
She notices his lip quiver. Before she had a chance to ask if he was ok, he pulled her in for a hug, burying his face into her shoulder and hair.
Taylor was caught off guard, but quickly composes herself and strokes his hair soothingly.
She doesn’t hear any crying, but she begins to feel a dampness in the area his face was buried into.
Taylor began to feel guilty. She knew Ben was ashamed of not being able to sing anymore. Yet she still rubbed it into his face, bringing back melancholic memories.
“I’m sorry, Ben..”
He pulls away, his eyes watery and mournful, to look into her eyes as he shakes his head.
I wish I could sing for you like how you just did for me. He tapped out. I wish I could serenade you. I wish.. there was a pause and he tapped out again wish- but stopped when Taylor grabbed his hand.
“Ben.. I love you still. I love hearing you hum and play guitar. I love watching you get excited to watch musicals. I love.. this..” she said, gesturing to the area they had dedicated to cuddling and watching movies and eat snacks and just hanging out.
“I don’t need you to serenade me like a Disney prince.. I just need you..” she reached down to squish his face. “Ben..”
He gave her a long look before the pulling her in for another hug.
Taylor sighed and smiled, kissing the top of his head. “You’re still my Disney prince either way..”

Prudence Holmes?
So Prudence's story should be serving a pretty crucial point to the narrative, but it gets impeded by design flaws and glitches. People also get hung up on the "mystery" of Mr. Kite and disregard how Prudence's escape connects to the rest of the story.
The most glaring problem for understanding Prudence's story is that Prudence's body in the tunnels suffers from a glitch in that game that will sometimes fail to spawn narrative-triggered corpses. The same thing will happen with Bobby Hickinbotham, for example. He should be passed out on the couch when you arrive at the Reform Club, but sometimes, all you find are his things strewn about. Lucky you don't have to search him to get the ID card you need!
Same thing happens with Prudence when you get to the motilene mines. And if you're the sort of player who isn't paying rapt attention when Arthur comments on it anyway and connects that to the ongoing plot about her, you may then never find out what happens to Prudence.
And that's assuming that you have been dutifully answering the telephones in the Garden District every morning and are invested in that. Which one may very well not be. I play quite efficiently these days, but I think even most new players do not spend enough time in the Garden District to be there on ten separate mornings to answer the phone ten times.
I do wonder if the quest "An Awkward Courtship", in which you're asked to return to the same Garden District set piece five nights in a row to eavesdrop on a couple meeting clandestinely, wasn't meant to sort of nudge the player into spending more time in Lud's Holm than they might have otherwise. If you look at it as trying to set the player up to be in the Garden District at dawn to answer the phone, then that quest seems a little less like a pointless time sink.
And all of this stems from the larger problem WHF has that the areas are so large and so samey unless you are in a set piece that one gets environment fatigue. So a player is probably wanting to get out of the Garden District as soon as possible, rather than linger about.
So they then also made it an achievement to listen to the phonecalls. A merit badge that Steam reports only 1.5% of players having collected. Welp. The generous thing to do would be to make your progress on the phones carry over to Sally's act, but I suspect we'd be asking quite a lot. (And then you'd miss Agent Sally the Super Spy's meandering and astute observation that it must be some sort of secret message.)
Speaking of environments, you're also supposed to be guessing at what the coded language in the calls means, but that's hard to do if you've never played the game before and don't know the landmarks or characters yet.
WHF is a game that very much benefits from multiple playthroughs, but let's be real, it's kind of a slog and most people do not complete it even the once. (High five it if you're here though, means you made it!)
But let's imagine a world in which all the information about Prudence that the player should have collected from those phonecalls is given to them in a way memorable and in the course of the average playthrough.
Like I said, people get hung up on the whole thing of who Mr. Kite is, but that's actually not important. It's okay for a plot element like Mr. Kite to be simply be without further explanation. You already know everything you need to know about him.
And actually, you already know everything you need to know about Prudence's escape too!
The important thing is that Gemma doesn't.
Prudence (and to a more obvious but muddy degree, Johnny Bolton) are your clues that Gemma does not have the entire picture of the situation on her conspiracy boards and is unknowingly trying to fit pieces of separate puzzles together. That she has Bolton, Prudence, and Harry Plantagenet all together means she suspects Verloc in all of their disappearances. By the time you're reading Gemma's boards, you could have met Bolton in Lud's Holm and know that he's alive and well-ish and even with all the impediments to Prudence's story, you probably picked up her journals in the Barrow Holm and Maidenholm hatches and would know that she left of her own accord and has been following Mr. Kite's path out of town. Prudence is the most reliable point that what Gemma has concluded is not the the actual facts, but merely supposition.
If - big if - you're following the phonecall stuff, you'd know Prudence is still kicking about and not locked in Haworth Labs.
Other Proodle thots:
Arthur was apparently smitten with her when they worked together at the Department of Archives, Printing and Recycling (such that Prudence even notes his making "googly eyes" in her journal), but does not recognize her voice on these phonecalls.
Which I personally elected to mean that it's not actually her or Mr. Kite on the phones and that when it's a message for them, it actually is. Prudence does mention coming back from the phonebooth herself in her journal, being chased by the bobbies she's electrocuted in the Maidenholm hatch, but bobbies are rarely seen in the Garden District, the only place in Wellington Wells with working phonebooths. She also writes that she's "leaving a message" when she needs to inform Mr. Kite that she needs a new shelter because the Maidenholm hatch smells like rotting corpse. She could be euphemistic in her own diary (it's par for the course in Wellington Wells to speak that way), but you could also interpret that literally as I do.
Prudence also says in her diary that Victoria always suspected a resistance movement plotting away, but that Mr. Kite says there isn't one. And I think that is the case. There are some disparate resistance actions happening in Wellington Wells (Mr. Kite's Underground Railroad, William Godwin's overt protests, Johnny Bolton's operations, whatever it is the Reform Club is doing) but none of them are organized. They don't know about each other and aren't working together.
Isn't it very interesting how Arthur more or less forgets all about his infatuation with Prudence the second Sally reenters his thoughts? He really only mentions Prudence when faced with her existence, when he's answering a phonecall.
I like to think that his two week "holiday" from the O' Courant and sudden move to civil service was related to his feelings for Sally. And that he ends up working under Victoria? The Ploughboys call him her "pet" and she does seems somewhat invested in him. She very likely took him under her wing so she could keep an eye on him and encouraged him to move on, chemically and otherwise, in any direction other than Sally. So maybe Arthur's attentions on Prudence were never really founded on anything other than that he already had those feelings but was willfully forgetting their actual subject and needed someone else to hang them on.
Which would be quite convenient for Victoria if it worked out. Much as everyone loves the idea of Victoria/Prudence, I have to think it was unrequited. Obviously Victoria would never act on those feelings if she had them, but what a character doesn't say is as important as what they do and not once in Victoria's DLC does she ever mention Prudence. She doesn't even remember Prudence's goodbye letter in her own recollection of her house.

What do you think is the reason behind Ted and Rebecca having very few scenes together? It's beyond frustrating! Even when we know it's deliberate, it's still too much. They're practically almost avoiding each other.
We've been seeing all the parallels and connections since s1 but when are THEY going to?? I just need them to have any interaction that is not 5 seconds long with a bunch of other people around.
But I'm still holding on to the hope that the less we see of them together now means the more later, otherwise what are we even doing here?

I think it's absolutely intentional - the use of misdirection is so deliberate, the classic rom-com bait and switch, keeping the two romantic leads apart in order to bring them together in a meaningful way. Look at the scene with Tish, is it going to push Rebecca to face her own self-admitted fear of being alone and stop pushing Ted away?
The amount of Nora Ephron references (specifically When Harry Met Sally, which Brett quite rightly states is the greatest rom-com of all time!) when it comes to their dynamic is something I am completely obsessed with and I may have to make a very long post about it! If we look at a few examples, I think it's a good indication of where the writers are leading us!
From the very start, Ted & Rebecca's dynamic has been very Sally Albright & Harry Burns coded. Two people who initially clash, but become friends...and eventually fall in love.
Similarly, the dynamic between Joe Fox & Kathleen Kelly in You've Got Mail - Kathleen thinks Joe is out to destroy her business, but when she gets to know him through an anonymous chatroom, she falls in love with him and accepts that he's not the man she thought he was when they finally meet - he's actually the man she needs.
Sam & Annie in Sleepless in Seattle - Sam, a single father, seeks help from a therapist to deal with his grief and ends up meeting Annie. They have their big rom-com meet cute at the top of the Empire State Building and Annie becomes step-mother to Sam's son.
After Rebecca's meeting with Tish, I'm holding onto the hope that our patience will be rewarded!!! x

Getting to know teacher!eddie from Notes on a Scene
Thanks to @myosotisa @jo-harrington and @deathbecomesthem for kicking off this brilliant idea and to @br0ck-eddie for tagging me!
Here's the original post with the questions, if you feel so inclined!
What story is he from? What kind of story is it (Fix-it fic, Older!Eddie, Rockstar!Eddie etc)?
teacher!AU inspired by my steve series the kids aren't alright; it's a quasi-coming of age story, in that, eddie grapples with being an adult (which, like, don't we fucking all?). New Girl vibes, for sure cut with some miscommunication and chaos because i am nothing if not predictable.
What inspired you to write this Eddie?
he was a secondary character in TKAA and i loved him so much that i thought he deserved his own story.
What are your favorite headcanons about him/share something you never shared in your story?
omgomg okay. eddie stays pretty firmly in his wheelhouse with films, he knows what he likes and what's comfortable - not a huge risk taker in that regard. but reader is a bonafide film teacher and sets out to educate him on the finer points of cult classics and horror. and he's down for it, especially since most of the time when the credits roll he's either balls deep or on his way there. BUT THEN. they watch Bladerunner 2049 and eddie has the gall to FALL ASLEEP!!! jail, jail for a thousand years! reader is shocked and dismayed, denis villeneuve did not go through all that effort for eddie to pass the fuck out because "the score was really soothing," or "nothing happened for the first hour." (he's so like me fr)
What does he wear on a casual day? On a dressier day? What does he wear to bed?
so, while there is a dress code for faculty at school... eddie, predictably, does whatever he wants. mostly jeans and a band tee for day-to-day shenanigans, liiiiike chasing band kids who can't stay in formation on the field or whatever. keeps a jacket in his office because the one time he didn't he was forced to borrow steve's letterman jacket and all the kids asked when the wedding would be.
dressier fare involves whichever jeans are the cleanest, maybe a flannel over the band tee and his leather jacket.
to bed? absolutely nothing. and yes, it will bite him in the ass.
Favorite foods?
a simple man of simple pleasures, he's not picky. pizza, burgers, the works. he does have a tendency to pop tums like they're candy though. hasn't quite worked out the correlation between what he eats and why he feels like shit after the fact. like i said, growing pains.
Tell Us About His Family/Friends
his bff is Trouble from TKAA and steve by proxy. robin'll do in a pinch if the lovebirds are too busy sucking face. but the ace up his sleeve is always wheels aka nancy byers.
and ofc wayne. he keeps trying to tell the old man to retire but he's even more stubborn than eddie is. they have dinner once a week and go fishing in the summer. well, wayne fishes and eddie tries not to fall out of the boat.

he's around teenagers being a teacher and all. so he's pretty varied in his tastes now and remembers being their age and thinking his discovery of metallica or dio was the defining moment of his life and he's not about to yuck their yum. mostly he's exposed to tiktok samples from the band or hellfire kids, and then whatever the fuck is playing at the loft. generally a highly specific playlist or top 40 depending on whose home at the time.
What are his views on romance? On sex?
fun fact: eddie is a HUGE romantic. like, will watch when harry met sally by himself after a shit day and cry. that being said, the college to career pipeline hasn't afforded him many opportunities to show that side of himself. he hasn't had a "real" relationship in a minute, mostly just quick meaningless fucks to keep him sated. so, while he is a romantic, eddie has pretty much separated sex from that equation in this story. consciously or not, he's looking for a deeper connection, a spark that can be fanned into a flame.
Is he optimistic or pessimistic?
he's a realist. working with teenagers helps because they're always there to knock you down a peg and deflate your ego. but he also sees and hears some shit from the kids that breaks his heart.
Where or with whom is he most comfortable?
places he's comfortable would be his office, the loft, reader's house, the hideout, and the soundbooth just off of reader's classroom.
the people he's comfortable with would be the gang (steve, trouble, robin, vickie, jon, nancy, argyle), wayne, and the band or hellfire kids. hop's a mixed bag because he's eddie's boss and the former chief of police - depends on the day and if he needs a favor.
What are his views of his future? What are his hopes/dreams?
hmmm. he definitely wants connection what with everyone around him coupling up and settling down now. he could go either way with teaching? yeah, everyone says it's a calling and yadda yadda and he loves the kids (well, some of them), but if something better came along he wouldn't feel obligated to stay in hawkins.
as far as hopes and dreams go... he wants wayne to retire, and, ideally, let eddie help out with some things like bills or whatever. he's open to the possibility of settling down with the right person. and he really wants to get a dog or something. (watch him end up with an axolotl)

dog days of summer
This is edition 101 of Shangrilogs.
God September is a romance, huh? Will they, won’t they, the crisp breeze swinging into the party, only there long enough to lock eyes and leave. Just another night of humidity without reprieve. You’re in the unrelenting sun when it creeps up your spine like cool breath. “Fall is coming,” everyone says, blessed with the premonition of a cold morning. “I can feel it.”
It’s such a relief when summer caves in on itself, when the expectations lower and the season of routine sets in. The season of When Harry Met Sally and Practical Magic, of notebooks and soup. Maybe it’s the old memories of it, of losing summer to the coming chill. No longer did you have to judge whether or not you were adequately tan or adequately fun. All the lives you weaseled in and out of burrowed back into the ground, another season’s ghosts. And in their absence, this uncanny version of yourself, same as ever but with so much potential — so much potential in fact it made me throw up every first morning of the new school year. Absolutely gagged with options.
Now, fall means I can sleep. The sun angle changes, slinking away from my bedroom to peer into someone else’s window. The air cools and the logs shrink, letting the tendrils of night reach into the gaps of my bedspread, searching for bare ankles to twist around and beckon to the floor.
But not yet.
September is merely the promise of fall. You can put on your sharpest sweater, play only Bon Iver and Joni Mitchell, and summer will still rule the party in a slip dress and an aperol spritz. Save your Meg Ryan and Manhattans for October. How can one even stomach pumpkin on a seventy degree day? If only to be dragged by the senses one month forward and countless years back to color-coded folders and the clank of lockers and corn stalks tied with twine to the porch.
The sun is setting at dinner time, though, shutting the blinds on a full stomach. At least she gets it. No more 9pms on the asphalt, still warm under foot. She’s as eager for fall as we are — she’s got to bring spring somewhere else. Her absence makes space for brooding. The longer nights lead to longer longings. Summer loses her grip when the stars come out. She might have the blistering of the high sun, but the green of the leaves has lost its luster and fall sneaks in at night. You can stand in the creeping wind of the evening and wrap your arms a little tighter, shove your pockets a little deeper, and breathe. Summer’s not watching at night. You can embrace fall like a lover.
The embrace is brief, though. Too risky to let it linger. You would find a way to leave summer behind, but she always leaves first. She packs her bags while you’re eyeing a farmstand of peaches and tomatoes. She gives it her all, sweat shimmering on her collarbone, but the party always turns on her — she’s never the It Girl for long. Every conversation diverts from backyard BBQs to back to school, sunscreen to sweatshirts, and she’s left standing there with an emptying glass while the menu changes behind her back. She’s meaner now, hot headed and cruel. Too many years of people buying too many things in an effort to drown her out. They love her, they adore her, they forget her. Fall never overstays their welcome, they don't know how. They take their cues from the leaves, gone before you had a chance to say how you felt.
But not yet.
For now, fall’s lovers simply practice their speeches in the mirror, shoulders still bare, summer just out of ear shot. “I’ve been thinking about you,” they would say. Something where the heft is in the hands of the receiver, where they can always back down with, “as a friend, of course.” But fall knows.
The hot drink on a hot day, sweater tied around the waist, a sudden interest in the occult. A crush on fall is obvious if you’re looking. And who hasn’t dreamed of what they can’t have. Summer has an ever dripping affair so long as you’ll land between her latitudes. And those who find themselves cunning enough to play winter’s games can spend all year in her bed. But fall never stays, you would merely chase them around the world, just another leaf on the wind.
Their cool hands will graze your skin, wrapping you in blankets, lighting candles of sandalwood and musk, and they’ll curl up next to you to watch as the leaves begin to blush, embarrassed they were ever so green, and they’ll press a hand to your cheek as they do every year, if only to remind you that however brief, the romance was real.
But not yet.

I'm obsesssssed with the artful dodger-- YOU WERE SO RIGHT! do you have recs for any other shows/movies with jily coded couples??
YESSSS !!!!! I'm so glad you enjoyed -- tell your friends and spread the good word about the artful dodger.
Funnily enough, I do have more (my brain really does jump right to 'is this jily coded' whenever I watch something new).
An oldie but a goodie - Anne Shirley and Gilbert Blythe from Anne with an E (some good rivals to lovers, plus some social justice in there) -- season 3 in particular really scratches that jily itch (bonus it's a red head and a brunette)
Lockwood & Co (particularly Anthony Lockwood is giving major JP) is an amazing show that should not have been cancelled after 1 season, but has a lot of jily energy as well. (also maybe technically a redhead and brunette here as well?)
When Harry Met Sally -- look, maybe I say this because my goal in life is to one day do a When James Met Lily fanfic, but there's just something about this movie that really does it for me for the antagonists to friends to lovers. I turn this on whenever I really need to watch jily vibes
Now this next one is not necessarily jily, but...well, you'll see why in a moment:
Angus Thongs and Perfect Snogging -- is this Jily ? Ehh.... am I putting this here because ATJ was my first JP face claim -- YES. For that I reason I also might throw Nowhere Boy in there, but that's not really a love story.

Favourite Character Bingo - 2023
Characters I first encountered in 2023 (not necessarily part of media released in that year).
These are intended to be ordered loosely according to genre, moving from classic to contemporary horror, sci-fi horror, thriller horror, on to drama, comedy, then comic/cartoon and fantasy. Naturally, plenty of these don't quite stay in their own prescribed mould and could be considered fitting for another genre, but this is MY PARTY and I make the rules >:(
The hardest thing I've ever done may just be forcing myself to choose only one Baldur's Gate 3 character. If this was ordered by fondness for the characters, Astarion would be up top, but it's not and I'm petty so he's last and least.
As may surprise no-one, the prevailing trends are trickster archetypes, gothic looks, autism coding, and sympathetic or misunderstood status and/or rebellion. Also Billy Crystal is there.

11. Is writing your passion or just a fun hobby?
I technically am a writer for my job (PhD student) but writing fiction is certainly more of a hobby than anything else. The stuff I write for work is certainly quite different than anything I post here lol
28. Share three of your favorite fic writers and why you like them so much.
Adure on AO3 / @toburnup - I think they're writing is very introspective and realistic; the emotions and interiority of the characters always seem really true to the characters and to the events taking place in the fics. One of my favorite fanfiction authors for sure and I'm definitely super hung up on is your light on? It's very bittersweet and heartbreaking and I can't wait to read the update. (I also LOVE LOVE LOVE throw me one -- I come back to this one all the time <3)
@aidaronan - My favorite is Anywhere, Anytime, but she is the one true voice of the monster fuckers in the ST fandom. Everything she writes is just so fantastic and fun, I love it.
indelicate / @steddielations - I LOVE Trouble Looks Good on You (just saw there's a chapter I haven't read omg) and Dream Boy <3 and they're two of my favorites for sure. She writes the BEST flirting/banter (Trouble Looks Good on You fr fr fr). I haven't read EVERYTHING she's written, but I'm confident I would like it all.
37. Talk about your current wips.
I have FOUR WIPs rn which is UNPRECEDENTED for me. I haven't written fanfiction in ten years and the last time I was in a fandom like this, I only ever wrote one-shots, so the fact that I've even finished multiple multi-chapter fics is honestly amazing to me (while I was taking my doctoral exams????? writing 75 pages of [redacted] for my advisor??? and then also writing over 100,000 words of steddie fanfiction???? crazy of me. unhinged.). Okay, so it's "i can't let go when something's broken" which is almost! done! I'm struggling with the ending and tying everything together, but it's coming!! I promise!! It was only supposed to be the one post, but everyone was really nice and no one wanted to see Steve hurting like that, so. I am powerless to the Steddie gods. Then "it had to be you" which is just so fun. It's a When Harry Met Sally... AU because Steve and Eddie are so Sally/Harry coded, it literally physically hurts me. Steve is Sally!!! He is!!!! I think "it had to be you" has some of the best dialogue/banter I have ever written in my life. Definitely the most fun I've had writing anything ever. Then there's the 10 Things I Hate About You AU which I have big plans for! I actually only intended it to be one post, but people were so nice about it and seemed to like it so. And lastly, "oh my, love is a lie" which is a modern!AU where Steve has been ghosted by Eddie and then re-meets him when Dustin forces Steve to hold a Friendsgiving party at college. LOTS of navigating Steve's abandonment issues and his emotional baggage, which I'm really into rn. Steve angst has me in a chokehold and I love to see him pine from afar. Haven't updated this in soooo long, but I have big plans!!! Lots of stuff to come, I hope.
