The Tooth Fairy
Some tooth-rotting (pun intended) fluff for you, guys, based on @daiziesssart's new WIP that you can see here (seriously, go follow her there, you're missing out!)
Arlie, this is for you ❤️
“But look,” he stomps impatiently, “she came!”
Harry excitedly holds out his palm, where two coins (a galleon and a pound) sit.
James comes up behind her, placing a hand on the small of her back, and she relaxes against him. “Who did?”
“The tooth fairy, dad! I'm rich now!”

For this month's @jilychallenge I wrote a little successor to last month's Dillweed in a Fancy Metal Can.
Partner: @charmsandtealeaves
Prompt: University Football/rugby/field hockey training is open to the public, on a very hot day star player A takes a shower from a water hose and B walks against a lamppost bc B might have been staring Either read on AO3 or under the cut!
At least this one had trees, Lily thought as she once more hobbled down a sandy path surrounded by people in costumes ranging from breathtaking to mind-boggling. Though, admittedly, there was an odd concentration of steampunk at this particular faire. Which she did not mind in the least.
Lily was drawn to all the shiny brass, gears, and pants. There really was nothing like dragging a full-length gown through the damp grass and dusty paths of a castle’s garden to really make you appreciate the comfort that comes with wearing trousers.
Which was nothing against the red dress Mary had let her borrow this time around. Even if she did feel a little suspicious about the colour, of the myriad of colours, the sneaky blonde had selected the only red.
It did not stop her from making note of the styles she liked. For possible future reference. While she would not admit it to Mary, who would become more insufferable than she had been when she mentioned wanting to come with her to this event., But she was making mental notes for a potential future endeavour.
In one of the larger clearings, there was a section cordoned off with a thick rope. A sort of playpen where a bunch of kids, some in costume, were running around with foam swords. All screams and giggles as they chased each other.
But that was not what caught her attention. Casually leaning on a large wooden sword stood a Ren Faire snack. His linen shirt hung open to reveal a healthy amount of dark chest hair and an impressively muscled chest.
She could not help but let her thoughts wander when his hand ran through his wild, ebony locks, showing off a hint of some very, very toned forearms a better person would have ignored. But who was she kidding? The way this man casually leaned against his sword did things to her.
Mary caught her attention by grabbing Lily’s wrist and pulling her towards a steampunk contraption. It was not until she got closer that she realised it was a grill. They sold burgers and sausages that smelled pretty damn good.
It also meant they could sit down in this clearing and enjoy the show. Watch and listen to how this tall, dark, and glasses-mediaeval man-candy would teach the little whirlwinds some basic sword fighting. That sounded like the perfect show to go with their pit stop.
And so, Lily and Mary found themselves a large tree to lean against that offered a perfect view of the clearing.
“Oh, you picked a brilliant spot, Lils.” Her friend complimented and settled in. “Never say no to a little dinner with a view.” She could feel her elbow trying to poke her through her corset, and she nudged the smirking blonde back with her shoulder.
Taking a bite from her burger, Lily grinned. Enjoying the way this man’s commanding voice got all the kids in line so easily. The baritone that floated over was not entirely unpleasant. The smile that she could spot was positively dazzling.
“He kind of looks like your knight, doesn’t he?” Mary suddenly commented while they watched the swordsman make a brave attempt at battling a hoard of kids. Laughing and pretending to get hurt as they smacked his shins and hips with their weapons.
Lily squinted, trying to remember how ‘Sir James’ had looked up close. But frankly, she couldn’t quite remember his face. Besides, with the armour on, he could have just worn a lot of padding. “No, he didn’t wear glasses,” she decided after a moment of scrutiny.
Then she paused to glare at her friend, swatting her on the arm. “And don’t call him my knight!” Lily huffed and rolled her eyes. He was here, somewhere. She knew that much. His troupe had been on the pamphlet, and they’d contemplated going to another show.
Not that she saw the point. They saw one, and she was pretty certain they were basically the same thing. Besides, and this was something she was not going to admit aloud if he did not recognise her, she might actually be a little hurt.
It was silly, but for a moment, there had been a spark. And immature as it was, Lily hoped that he did not have that every show. That she was just a little special.
“Do you want to get a closer look? Maybe you’ll know him better by his big, manly hands.” Mary’s voice dropped as she mocked her with a gleeful grin on her face.
Taking a large bite from her burger, Lily used it as an excuse not to answer immediately. To let the rosy dusting of her cheeks come down. “That is unfair to bring up, and you know it. I had a few cups of wine at that point,” she protested as if she had not wholeheartedly meant them.
“Come off it, Lils. We both know he is ridiculously hot and so very into you. I still can’t believe you didn’t ask him for a drink.” Again, it wasn’t like she had not considered it, but she was sure he got offers like that all the time. “Tonight, when we go to the show, you are going to stroll up to your prince charming and get that drink. Or, I swear, I am going to slide into his DMs and give him your number.”
“You wouldn’t!” She gasped, even though she knew that she absolutely would. “This is just some ploy for you to get into these things for free, isn’t it?” Lily narrowed her eyes suspiciously and let out a loud ‘Ha’ when Mary pulled up her shoulders, looking guilty.
“It would be a nice perk. These things aren’t cheap, you know. Plus, it would get you laid. Who knows, maybe he is particularly talented with those large, masculine hands of his.” With every word out of Mary’s mouth, Lily’s look turned a little more disappointed and then exasperated. In the end, she flicked open her fan to hide her face behind it.
“There are kids present,” she hissed, though it did not seem to bother Mary in the slightest. “I bet he is into every halfway decent-looking girl.” Taking another bite from her burger with a little more vigour than strictly necessary. “The man has a fan club, Mary. I doubt I crossed his mind after turning down his advances.”
Mary tutted, rolling her eyes at her friend. “Or, you have been on his mind because of that. Ever considered that?”
Yes. “No, because that is bonkers,” she lied in return. Of course, the thought had crossed her mind; on more occasions, she would like to admit. She mostly blamed sleep deprivation and slow days at her residency. There were too many opportunities to have caffeine-induced delusions about a bloke who practically flirted with girls for a living.
“Suit yourself,” Mary quipped with a shrug and set her eyes back on the field of shrieking children brandishing practice swords at each other. They ate their snacks in peace until the blonde decided to pose a queer question. “Say, Lils?”
“Huh?”
“Think we’re getting old?”
The redhead’s eyebrows drew together, and she turned her head slowly in the direction of her friend. “What on earth makes you say that?” The offence dripping from her voice, and a lifted eyebrow punctuated her ridiculous question.
She nodded in the direction of the feral hoard, making Lily giggle while they brutally attempted to bring down the instructor. Her head tilted curiously, hoping her friend would elaborate so she did not need to admit that there was something incredibly hot about the way he humoured those kids.
“Well, you know how I feel about offspring. But damn!” Mary laughed, sighing longingly. They watched, spellbound, while he bent down just enough for one of the smaller kids to mount his back. Little arms wrapped around his muscular neck in a clumsy chokehold.
Lily hummed in understanding, unable to contain her giggle as the girl on his back decided to use the man as a mount. A very impressive, feral battle cry came from the little princess as she raised her sword and the Ren Faire snack charged.
Her friend was right; she could almost feel her temperature climbing, the baby fever simmering far closer to the surface than it had before. The little voice in the back of her mind sounded remarkably like her mother singing about a biological clock.
“It is almost rude, really,” Lily decided with a determined nod. Making it Mary’s turn to look at her in utter confusion. “How are we supposed to shamelessly stare when he’s being this adorable?”
The sheer volume of Mary’s laugh made her jump, drawing the attention of a few people around her. A collection of pirates and Batman are pausing their conversation to look at the pair with a hint of judgment.
The pair of them glared back with equal fervour until they could not contain their giggles any longer. That was when they decided to move along. There were still plenty of things to do, and it would be good to get her mind on a luscious piece of topped flatbread.
Still, she could not help herself. The children were rushing back to their parents, and the humdrum was bound to catch anyone’s attention, really. It had nothing to do with the fact that she felt drawn to the gorgeous, bespectacled man.
There he was, standing next to one of the treasured water points, the water trickling down his chin, his throat bobbing. Her eyes were drinking him in as thirstily as he was. She was unable to keep her eyes off of him.
Then he dealt a killing blow by leaning forward and dipping his head under the hose. The water made his white linen shirt cling to his beautiful tanned skin, showing off the muscles they’d mused about.
Entranced by the sculpted shoulders and the rippling trapezoids. “I need to see something,” Lily mumbled to her friend, letting herself be lured by the siren song of his anatomy.
If she could only get...
SMACK
Something hit her right in her ribs, knocking the wind out of her. Her eyes were tearing away from the delectable display and from the culprit. One of the unvarnished plywood poles that made up the makeshift fence posts stood right in her path.
Lily stared at it in horror, the realisation dawning on her, while Mary giggled uncontrollably. She was never going to live this down, but hopefully no one but her friend noticed.
The crowd was still trickling by; no one had stopped to laugh at her, and she would count that as a win. She could deal with Mary’s teasing; that was something that could be bought off with a pint. The idea of some stranger, though? No, thanks.
“Ouch,” she complained, rubbing at the sore spot as she fell into Mary’s arms. Stifling a laugh at her own, she soon burst out in rumbustious rolls. A sound died in her throat when her eyes landed on a pair of heavy leather boots.
Her emerald eyes followed them up, only to stall when she noticed a wet white shirt clinging to disgustingly defined abs. She swallowed, her face heating up once more. Curse her pale complexion, she supposed.
“You alright?” The sound of his voice was low, insouciant, and familiar. Making her eyes travel up curiously. She hoped that, maybe, his face would give her a clue as to why his voice stirred more than just something mischievous.
However, before Lily could place it, there was a spark of recognition in his eyes and a smirk curling from his lips. “You’re back! I was starting to think I might lose the bet.”
Both the women now frowned and blinked at him curiously. Mary was poised to speak when the Ren Faire Snack laughed, his strong, calloused fingers carding through his damp locks. “It’s the glasses, isn’t it?” he asked while his hand lingered on the back of his neck. Granting them a nice peak at his bulging deltoids and defined triceps.
The thought crossed Lily’s mind that, with him around, studying for her anatomy exam might have been a lot more fun. Unfortunately, she was not quite as intimately familiar with these specific muscles yet.
“We met a few weeks ago, my lady,” he winked, and it struck her like lightning. “Uhm, James. Sir James. I guess.”
At this revelation, Mary did an amazing re-enactment of the first time he’d approached her on his white mare. She squeezed her arm so tight that it cut off circulation for a moment. “See, I told you he’d remember you,” her friend hissed in her ear.
Lily took a moment to deploy one of her deadliest side-eyes at Mary, who released her Kraken-esque hold on her.
“Sir James? I suppose I remember,” she replied coyly, her eyelashes fluttering flirtatiously in his direction. Her hand deliberately lingered on her neck as she tucked a strand of hair behind her ear while her eyes slowly drank him in from crown to sole. Making a show of looking.
She bit her lip while her eyes travelled back up, meeting his eyes with a giggle. “I do think I said I’d have a drink with you last time; did I not?”
He laughed, the sound sitting somewhere in the hollow of her chest, glowing warm and bright. “I do believe you said I’d have to win you another crown. So, I suggest you come this afternoon. Be my lucky charm again.”
Mary pushed her forward, her hands landing against his chest right before he caught her at the elbow. The hint rather clear.
“Maybe we can celebrate prematurely,” she proposed, her fingers curling against his wet shirt. The sensation of sparking an idea was a little risque and definitely crazy. But the best ideas always were.
“After you’ve taken off that shirt.”

Lily no doubt was attracted to James' mind, she'd not have fallen for a brainless jerk just because he was good looking. He was a bright student and that, despite him also using his mind to pull pranks, was compelling.
So yes, maybe she insulted him but it laid with his attitude.
And no, Lily isn't the brains in the relationship, James is too. They both are. Two people with bright minds can get together.

I think one of my favorite jily tropes is when James is a cocky, arrogant prick and he's teasing Lily about how he knows that she's attracted to him or that she likes him or something and then Lily is like, 'yes, I fancy you' and James trips over every pair of shoes he owns, falls on his face and loses every iota of confidence he's ever had. He doesn't believe her, he can't understand why she would like him. He's baffled. Bamboozled. And she's like ??? you just told me that you knew I liked you? and he's like 'yeah but I was making shit up???'

He’s shirtless.
He’s fucking standing there, shirtless.
Lily did not know what to do with her hands, or eyes, or legs, or hair. She’s frozen in the middle of the field where she’d been meeting Marley for a post practice walk back to the castle for the Slug Club meeting. Marley was busy blabbering on about Anna Spinnet getting on her nerves, going on and on about some rule book thing.
Maybe.
To be honest, the words didn’t even register in Lily’s brain. There was nothing going on up there, not a single brain cell firing, not once she caught sight of him. Instead she stood there, mute, wondering if she could die from attraction.
Next to “Fatal Attraction” in the dictionary, was James Potter.
Now don’t get her wrong, she crushed on him everyday. He had many qualities that made him worthy of a swoon.
His hair, for one, was windswept to one side with curls sticking out in places he’d not managed to tap down. She’d once gotten to run her fingers through the strands and they’d felt like sugar candy from the fair, waves spun like thread that might melt from her touch.
His eyes, if she were standing close enough, would be a deep shade of brown with gold and green flecks. Not emerald green like hers, a softer green, like the color of the sea in photos from southern islands. She’d seen it in postcards, almost like diamonds reflecting a green light.
More impressively, he was shirtless.
Rippled arm muscles demanded her gaze as he drank from a water bottle, the water dripping out of his mouth he was so careless with it. It was May, warming up, and the early summer sun had slightly tanned his chest. Curly black hair ran across his chest, and normally she hated chest hair, but this was James Potter.
He broke all her rules but that only made sense where he was concerned. Lily often wondered if the man had ever followed a rule in his life. He was known for detentions and late night parties with friends. He had no idea how to stay out of trouble, but maybe that’s why she liked him so much.
She couldn’t stay out of trouble either.
Lily imagined if he ever showed up to class like that, she would grab him by the waistband of his quidditch joggers and pull him into her lap. Merlin, he’d tower over her, consume her, on top. His hand was big enough to hold a quaffle so he could handle her breasts with ease. One of those hands ran across his beautiful body, preparing to stretch and—
She swallowed a sigh just as someone side smacked her, making her call out and capturing the attention of everyone nearby.
“What was that for!” Lily demanded with a cry, rubbing the side of her head and glaring at Sirius Black who had his arms crossed and was looking at her like he could read her mind.
“Dunno,” Sirius tilted his head, his grey eyes slightly narrowed, “I couldn’t tell if you were having a stroke or not, your eye kept twitching.”
“So you hit me?” Lily stepped away from the tall Gryffindor, still rubbing her cheek pathetically, her eyes darting back to James who (still shirtless) was now watching them with one eyebrow quirked.
“My house elf taught me to smack my uncle Boris when he was having a stroke,” Sirius shrugged as he waltzed past, cool as could be, in James’ direction. “Hasn’t failed me yet.”
“I wasn’t having a stroke!” She called after him, “I was—“
Sirius grinned wickedly as he turned on a heel to watch her expression momentarily falter as she stopped herself from speaking. “I know what you were doing, but until you’re willing to pay up, gawking counts.”
She shot him a nasty hand gesture at which he laughed before finishing a complete turn to face James who mumbled something to Sirius quietly. Sirius kept in a bit of laughter as he passed James a shirt, not answering.
Lily cursed Sirius within an inch of his life when James took the shirt and covered back up. Sure, she might’ve made a bet with Sirius that she’d never date James Potter, or else she’d owe him twenty galleons, but that hardly meant she couldn’t stare politely when James offered himself up for it.
She just had to figure out how to get him shirtless again.

━。゜✿ jily fic recommendations ✿ ゜。━
These fics are set in the wizarding world but aren’t necessarily canon complaints.
For reference, anything in italics is taken from the summaries on ao3.
Tumblr media
Gilded by @charmingwillow
Beneath her jumper, her heart was fluttering fast. Her free hand rubbed at the spot, willing it to calm. Her eyes ached from all the nights she spent awake, unable to sleep because it hadn’t calmed in days. Weeks.
She knew why; beneath her fingertips, under the soft cotton of her sweater, her skin tingled. She knew without seeing that the spot above her heart sparkled faintly with gold, like stars spinning in the cosmos. Scattered and dancing around a name that wouldn't quite focus. It was as beautiful as it was terrifying.
Someone, somewhere, was falling in love with her. They were close enough that Lily could feel a tug of alignment if she concentrated enough.
Or, Lily and James go on a walk in the forest.
Sunshine in My Eyes (requires an ao3 account) by monroeslittle
Mr. and Mrs. Evans are killed when Lily's only a girl, and she's supposed to go to a home with her sister. Instead, a relative they didn't know they had comes to collect them, and introduces Lily to manners, magic, and a life that's just the slightest bit different from the life she was supposed to live.
Or, an AU in which Minerva McGonagall raises Lily.
Dying Fires by @jamesunderwater
In fifth year, James attempts to comfort Lily by a dying fire - but finds this will require restraint on his part in a number of ways.
Their tentative, developing friendship is something so special to me
basic maths by @gigglesandfreckles-hp
Euphemia cuts Sirius off sharply. “I was simply verifying whether this is indeed the same Lily Evans whose name is written under my dining room table with a heart around it.”
or Lily meets the parents and James tries not to hyperventilate. over and over and over again.
Blue Jay by @neurowriter14
In a world with magic, the only thing that really took Lily by surprise, and trepidation, was the fact that she had a soulmate.
All That's Known by @women-inthe-sequel
Wizards view nearly everything as a problem for magic to fix. Other people might view him that way, but James has never felt broken. He doesn’t need to be wound like an old-fashion toy and programmed to do what everyone else does.
I am in desperate need of more deaf!James (or deaf!Lily). Please can someone recommend me fics
just like a tattoo by sleepygirl0305 (on ao3)
Shortly after he witnesses Remus and Sirius realize that they're soulmates, James gets his own soulmate tattoo. A fairly inconvenient time, given that there is a war going on. And N.E.W.Ts. But no matter, he was going to try anyway.
A Happy Thought by @thelighthousestale
The 7th year Defense Against the Dark Arts Class learns the Patronus Charm.
James is shocked to learn what Lily's Patronus is.
I know that this is a very cliché trope but I'm a sucker for patronus fics.
The Boy (in the bedroom) Next Door by @eastwindmlk
Lily Evans has to move in with her new potion's teacher to finish her apprenticeship. There is one small issue, said teacher? Fleamont Potter, father of infinitely annoying and frustratingly fit former rival James Potter. Who she has not seen after leaving Hogwarts after her third year.
Put on Bed Rest also by @/ eastwindmlk
Hogwarts is covered in snow and James Potter is sick. Who better than Lily to nurse him back to health.
May Moon by Elynn (on ao3)
May Moon- also known as the Flower Moon or Blooming Moon, due to the abundance of flowers that occur as spring arrives.
She glanced up, catching sight of Mary and Marlene in the crowd of unsorted first years, the both of them bouncing on their toes as a new student was called up. She’d already made two friends (she hoped) and Lily was always a bit of an overachiever. “Hiya,” she said, doing her best to sound upbeat. The boy—Lupin—looked up at her, face a bit shocked. “I’m Lily.”
or sixth year, a bad pick-up line, and a secret.
Not really a jily fic (it's pre-relationship) but I really wanted to include it in this rec list
Accidental Magic by @missgryffin
What else is there to do after confessing feelings in the middle of the night than spend a lazy Saturday in bed?
Hell Is Empty (And All The Devils Are Here) by @nodirectionhome-ao3
When an Order mission takes an unexpected turn, James and Lily find themselves stranded together. In the aftermath of the chaos, sheltering together through the storm, a fire catches between them.
Ignore the fact that I can't remember if I've recommended this fic or not. Regardless, the back-and-forth between James and Lily is so good in this fic.
Starlight by @suzyq31
Under the cover of stars, Lily and James go out in search of an elusive flower. The northern lights make Lily contemplate how plans change.
The next few fics are all by @apalapucian because I may or may not have been stalking her ao3 page. Everything, and I mean everything, Jayne writes is incredible.
maybe it was egos swinging (maybe it was her)
James starts rolling his shoulders, wincing. "Jesus, Evans." "back at ya," says Lily, testing her wrists. "ever heard of taking it easy?" "with you? never." "can’t believe you’d use confringo on me." "knew you'd block it," he says. "can’t believe you’d use depulso." she shrugs, grinning. "knew you'd block it."
(or: seventh-year, auror-aspirant, academic rivals, head boy and head girl James and Lily.)
I still can't get over the fact that Jayne wrote me over 11 thousand words of academic rivals jily. ELEVEN THOUSAND WORDS OF ACADEMIC RIVALS TO LOVERS JILY!! The banter, the stakes, I love everything about this fic
calliope calling
in which:
James wields a wand for the first time; Lily giggles, tracing an impossible dancing deer in the sky; Sirius slams the door; Peter sighs; and Remus screams, raw and screeching and piercingly young.
(or: the marauders and lily evans as children, and something about invisible strings glinting in the moonlight.)
green light
There are yellow roses on the kitchen table. a cup of coffee charmed to keep warm for a time. a scrawled "morning! :) –James & Harry" on a scrap of paper, the torn bottom of a receipt for... milk, she finds. and strawberries. harry was signed by Harry himself, and Lily wants to cry at the shaky strokes, the crooked lines. she can hear them in the other room where James' window seat project is almost finished. harry is laughing. he asks questions, mocks his dad's shabby handiwork, drops the things he's asked to hand.
roses and handwritten notes and coffee and giggles nearby. this is her life now. she skims the flowers, the sun itself in her heart.
or: the war is over. everybody lives AU. (well, not everybody everybody, but the potter family + sirius + remus + even peter* live.) old fic rewrite.
* = you'll see.
bad day wall
Lily calls it the bad day wall. it's like this weird communal one-liner diary thing.
every time i think i'm over her something happens and it hits me just as stupidly intense as all the other times. i'm SICK of it
why can't people just LIKE by default the people they LOVE? why do they have to be separate feelings? it would make things so much less complicated
or: in sixth year, Lily starts talking to a stranger(?) through messages on a wall. she also befriends James Potter. These two things are completely not related.
I haven't read this one but it on my marked for later

Jily Microfic - Sentimental
@jilymicrofics- feb 25th, prompt: sentimental - words: 397
It was not difficult to know what James Potter liked, as he never stopped talking about himself. So of course Lily knew that his favorite team was Puddlemere United, his favorite dessert was sticky toffee pudding, his favorite spot was the very top of the quidditch stands at sundown, and his favorite chocolate frog card to get was Salazar Slytherin, because he enjoyed repeatedly flicking him in the face. Anyone plagued by his proximity, Lily was sure, would know these things as well.
The difficult task had been deciding which of his favorites to use, but in the end, dessert seemed the obvious choice.
Lily arrived at their shared office twenty minutes before they were set to meet. Charming the pudding and sauce to stay warm and the ice cream to stay cold, she set the plate at his desk, ready and waiting for when he came in.
“What’s this?" James asked, standing beside his desk and pointing at the plate. His eyebrows were knit in confusion, but Lily thought she saw a grin waiting in the rafters.
Lily leaned back in her desk chair and said, "Happy anniversary," as way of an answer.
An eyebrow flicked skyward, and Lily relished in James’s awkward hesitation before he replied,  "...Anniversary?"
"Yes," she said, and stood to join him by his desk. “Don’t you remember?”
The paused grin had disappeared altogether now, his expression one of total bewilderment. “Er… No.” His hand went to his hair, and Lily’s heart did a small flip, as it always did when she elicited his infamous fidget.
“This day last year was the first time – and only – time you made a potion better than mine,” she explained, speaking as though it should have been obvious. “I thought it worthy of celebration.”
His face split into an amused grin. “I didn’t know you were so sentimental, Evans.”
She shrugged, smiling to herself. “It was a once in a lifetime sort of moment.”
He snorted. “Quite a claim when we’ve got a lot longer to go in this lifetime.”
“Mm,” she hummed, “I’m not worried.”
Looking down at the dessert again, James glanced at her from the corner of his eye. “Did you know sticky toffee pudding’s my favorite?”
Lily crossed her arms. “Really?” She shook her head. “How funny. Lucky guess, I suppose.”
“Yeah,” he replied, lifting the spoon with a smirk. “Lucky guess.”

I think this was harder than last year. I've read so many incredible fics this year (over 230 fics from 77 different authors, according to my tracker), but I've cursed myself to sticking with 23 for the ~vibes~. If you want more, just drop a 📖 in my ask box and I'll reply with another title! Happy New Year to you all!

Look at what the wonderful @constancezin showed me! Lily's dress is based on the last one in this post I made earlier, and she asked me to post this.

I'm in awe, it's so beautiful I could cry. And James looks so handsome, too! Thank you for letting me show the world this beauty ❤️

Love for the Summer
It’s time to bring this one back! This fic has been my escape for so long. Whenever I'd be in the mood to write some super cheesy, fluffy, romantic, smutty Jily, I'd open LFTS. It's so bittersweet to be finishing this fic, but I'm also so, so excited to share it with you again. This Jily is something special 💗
I'll be posting the remaining chapters on Wednesdays in May. See you on AO3!
☀️ Start over at Chapter 1 or skip right to where we left off, with the brand new Chapter 11 💛

It’s the 23rd in Aotearoa already which means it’s the first day of @mppmaraudergirl’s alight with happiness, married Jily fest.
Please accept my humble @jilymicrofics offering.
Day One - The Big Moments:
James was still half asleep as he brushed his teeth in front of the bathroom mirror. Back to back reconnaissance missions were taking their toll on his circadian rhythm. He was mid spit into the sink when Lily’s cry from the kitchen pierced the air.
“JAMES!”
He took off at a run, wand withdraw from his pocket and taking the stairs so many at a time he may as well be flying. Which he almost was as he descended just far enough and then soared over the banister, propelling himself with one arm.
Oh Merlin, he’d only left his wife a few minutes ago. Had he kissed her cheek as he got out of bed? Had he mumbled a sleepy I love you? He couldn’t remember. Had Voldemort found them, and was he too late?
Lily stood in the kitchen eyes wide and brimming with tears. James saw no sign of an assassin but still his heart was in his throat as toothpaste dribbled off his chin.
“Lily what-” She reached out desperately for him and he stepped toward her, offering his hand. “I’m right here love just tell me what’s wrong… oh.”
He felt it the second his hand connected with her belly. His heart rapidly returned to his chest once joy replaced his fear, and it gave a painful, longing squeeze. There was no questioning it. Their baby had started kicking, and it was suddenly so much more real.
“Well hello to you too,” he whispered to the bump.
As long as he lived he would never forget this first kick.

lily and sirius were always friends. it didn't happen after she and james, or anywhere in between, james was always jealous because of their friendship. she invited sirius to the sleepovers and helped him do his makeup for the first time. they were friends, without anyone else.

seeing a post about James always calling Lily by her first name even when they didn't get along is a startling reminder that people who have not read the books did not have the pleasure of seeing James address her as "Evans" like 15 times in 2 pages. like "all right, evans?" is the foundation that built and nurtured the jily fandom for two decades.

@jilymicrofics March Prompts day one: Troubled
There's something about Lily Evans today that troubles James Potter.
She's quiet, borderline mute. Every attempt he's made to banter with her and to tease her has led to absolutely nowhere, and it's concerning him. His friend (?) usually jumps at the chance to insult and fight with him, enough that they've recently been told off during several of their classes. Not today though. Today she's utterly silent, just glaring at him most of the time.
He watches her most of the day, mingling about their fellow sixth years, a surly expression on her face.
"I think I'm going to talk to her," James says finally, to which both Remus and Peter groan exasperatededly, and Sirius grins maniaclly.
"Please don't," Remus says pleadingly. "You're only going to do something stupid."
"What if her cat died or something?" Peter asks worryingly.
"What, you think I'm going to tease her about her dead pet that we don't even know is dead in the first place?"
"We're just saying," Remus pinches the bridge of his nose, "that she may not be in the mood to talk to you, of all people."
"What's that supposed to mean?" James asks indignantly, and Sirius claps him on the shoulder.
"He means you're an idiot. But know that I, at least, support you one hundred percent."
James scowls.
James finally corners Evans in the common room later that night on his way to quidditch practice. She's sitting in front of the big fireplace, arms folded, staring at the fire as if it's personally offended her.
"Alright Evans?" James says lightly. Evans doesn't miss a beat.
“Bugger off, Potter,” she grumbles, and James smirks a little.
“Right to it then.”
“What do you want?”
“I want to know what's up with you,” James replies, as if he hasn't noticed her annoyance. Evans scowls.
“Nothing is wrong with me,” she says, and James tilts his head.
“Really? You seem fairly troubled to me.”
“It's nothing Potter,” Evans says shortly. “It's not as if there's anything you can do about it.”
“Try me,” James says offhandedly, and Evans’ emerald green eyes meet his gaze. She studies him for a moment, and James braces himself. But then she surprises him.
"My sister," Evans finally says simply, "has decided to get married to a walrus."
James blinks. Muggles… are odd. This he knows. But… "Can muggles marry animals?"
"No, Potter," Evans rolls her eyes. "That's just what I call him." James frowns a little, feeling a pang of sympathy for this mystery man.
"Bit harsh on the poor bloke, don't you think?" He says tentatively, and Evans snorts.
"I'd think so too,” she says, “if he didn't insult me every five minutes." James furrows his brow, thoroughly confused.
"And your sister's okay with marrying someone like that?"
"My sister dislikes me about as much as Vernon does. I'm sure they'll be very happy disliking me together."
"His name is Vernon?"
"That's what I said when I first heard of him," Evans mutters in disdain. "He's a horrible person. If he weren't a muggle, I dare say he and Snape would get along swimmingly." James winces.
"That bad?"
"You don't know the half of it,” Evans says solemnly, going back to staring at the fire. “They both can't stand me. The only reason I'm invited to the wedding at all is because of mum. If they had it their way I'd be kicked out of the whole affair completely.” She pauses for a while, and brings her knees up to her chest. “I just… I wonder sometimes if it's even worth it, carrying on like this.”
James studies her for a while, and wonders. How on earth could someone so wonderful be treated so poorly by people who were supposed to care about her. Anger fills him from the inside out at the very notion, and he sniffs.
“Well,” he says, a bit of an edge to his voice. “I personally think you're worth ten of your sister, whatever she says.” Evans looks up at him.
“What?”
“Exactly what I said. “You're a phenomenal witch, Evans, and if they can't see that, it's their loss.” She stares at him. Blinks several times.
“I think I needed to hear that,” she says in a slightly choked voice, and James feels a pang of sadness in his chest at the crack in her tone.
“It's true,” he says firmly. “and if your family doesn't treat you right– well.” He shrugs. “Just let me know and I'll hex them for you.” The corners of Evan’s lips turn up ever so slightly.
“I'll keep that in mind,” she says. James smiles.
“Good.” The clock chimes outside, and they both look out the window. “Better head to quidditch practice, I guess,” James says. “But I'll see you later, alright?” Evans nods slowly.
“Yeah,” she says, voice low. “Yeah, right.”
She's still staring at him curiously, like she can't quite believe he exists. When it's clear she isn't going to say anything else, James whirls around awkwardly and walks away. He's just about to push open the portrait hole when Her voice floats over from the other side of the common room.
“James?”
He stops as the name registers in his head, and he turns, shocked at how much he loves the sound of his name on her lips. “Yeah?’
“Thanks.”
James smiles.
“Any time, Lily.”
