   Went through Dawn today to look for a specific quote For Reasons, and it reminded me of something I’ve been meaning to mention for a while now. 

 We see a great deal of Luna and Noctis’ relationship from both their points of view. While in the Crystal, Noctis get a fuller idea of all Luna has done for him and feels really humbled, even empathising with Ravus’ dislike of him, because he never knew how extreme things were for her. He’d always leaned on her so much, told her everything about himself, and he feels responsible for not seeking that same understanding in return. It’s why he abandons everything the minute he finds out Luna’s alive to help her, because he doesn’t want to fail her again. (And for context as to how severe her training was, she mentions some of it offhand to Sol, who makes a really big point of it all sounding like way too much. And for Luna’s part, it doesn’t seem to have occurred to her whether her circumstances were fair or not.)

 However -- and this is a pretty big however -- a surprisingly prominent part of the story revolves around the other characters going “gosh, if only Noctis was here. He’d know if it was really Luna or not.” Much to Sol’s confusion since, as far as she and most of the public know, Luna and Noctis met once as kids and never again. Even if he doesn’t grasp the extent of her circumstances, he seems to understand her character, and this is pretty strongly validated throughout the remainder of the story. More than that, it’s a pretty key driving force in it. At one point, he explains to Sol, “If someone’s in need and it’s within Luna’s power to help (...) she doesn’t hesitate. She just does it, no matter the consequences.” He’s absolutely right, of course - Sol even points out how Luna said something similar, almost word-for-word. Sol asks how he could possibly know that about her, and Noctis asks, “How could I not?” Sol recounts some of Luna’s more surprising, less Oracle-like moments, and Noctis actually laughs with an absolutely iconic malewife “that’s my girl” kind of attitude. 

 It’s a fascinating take on their dynamic, and says a lot about them both. How Noctis feels as if he has failed on this end because he doesn’t know the breadth of her experiences; how Luna never communicated them in the first place because they do not feel extraordinary to her. It is not a matter of her happiness or misery, it is just the way her world must be. But her very first thought when amazing things do happen is how she wants to tell Noctis; and when Noctis finds the notebook Luna has been keeping, he drops everything to read it. 

 Tl;dr: I love them.

we cry "the innocent women and children" to appeal to the masses, to try and force their sympathy, but the men and boys are innocent too.

I have seen sons crying out for their mothers, their fathers, their siblings. I have seen them break down at the loss of their families. I have seen them cling to their dead and grieve.

I have seen fathers cradle their dead children, seen them kiss their faces and hold their little hands. I have seen them faint with grief when asked to identify the dead. I have seen them carry their sons and daughters. I have seen them fasting to provide what little they can for their families.

I have seen men and boys digging through the rubble with just their bare hands, I have seen them comforting strangers, playing with children, rocking them, hushing them, even if the face of such imminent danger. I have seen them cry, seen them grieve, seen them break down into each other's arms, seen them be selfless, beyond selfless, becoming something I don't have a word for.

I have seen the men who are doctors refuse to leave their patients, even when they have no medicine or supplies to give them, even when they're threatened with bombings. I have seen fathers who have lost all their children pick orphans up into their arms and proclaim them their child so they are not alone. I have seen men and boys digging pets out of the rubble.

the men are innocent too. the men and boys are being hurt and killed too. the men and boys are grieving too. the men and boys are scared too. the men and boys are fighting to save their people too. the men and boys deserve to be fought for too.

I just think that 'animals are living intelligent creatures that have feelings and deserve to be respected' and 'when done properly farming is beneficial to both people and animals and there's nothing wrong with raising and killing animals for food, clothing, and other products' are concepts that very much can and should coexist
