At this point, I'm reeally hoping the narrator in Sparks and Spells is Kiyomi Haunterly. Saw someone else point out the narrator mentioning their "nonexistent eyes", but in the last episode, I also realized the narrator makes ghost puns. Since they say they're planning to enroll in Monster High next semester, that at least confirms the narrator is in-world watching the musical, and the puns imply they're a ghost. There's no telling if it's something that'll translate into the actual show, buuut I wanted to go back through the episodes and look for key bits of characterization in some of the quotes.

Observations are long, so putting that under the read more. You've been warned 😅

Episode 1:

"Maybe this magical music spark is just the thing this talent show needs! I'm entertained! ...Don't tell Draculaura I said that by the way." – narrator cares about Draculaura's opinion; Drac is also the first character the narrator focuses on and mentions by name, which would make sense for Kiyomi

Episode 2:

"First up is Cleooo~ Because she demanded it..." [audible nonexistent eyes rolling] "Ooh, haha, sorry boo~" – narrator unimpressed and even disdainful of Cleo demanding to go first, reacts smugly about her getting interrupted; first use of calling people "boo"

"This isn't exactly a witchcraft-friendly environment... Especially not with Dracula in the audience." – seems to be in favor of witchcraft, sympathetic to Draculaura's plight

"Thankfully our ghoul Iris is on it!" – seems to have a soft spot for Iris, in contrast to Cleo

"That magical music spark might be an agent of chaos, but it sure knows how to put on a showw~! 10/10" – all about a good show despite the chaos, aka narrator is a theater kid

Episode 3:

[Heath accidentally lights his picture of earth on fire] "Ooh, symbolism! Dark! Listen, if this takes a magical musical turn? I will not be upset about it." – narrator is a theater kid +1

"Poor Iris. She's poured her eternal soul into the show and has no idea what in the Hades is going on." – very sympathetic to Iris; the specific mention of Iris having an eternal soul and using "what in the Hades" makes me think of River Styxx, which would also line-up better personality-wise...

"Iris, watch out! ...Oh. She can't hear me." – narrator is watching the musical in-world, but not in-person; maybe scrying, or looking through a portal like Kiyomi's powers?

Episode 4:

"Our stinky little spark is just getting started!" – fun fact: the narrator's VA calls herself a "stinky voice actor" on her instagram bio, so if she had input on that line that'd be super cute lol

"Our boos are relieved, and now they can focus on getting the show back up and running. Personally, I prefer the drama. ...And it looks like the drama loves me too! I see you~" – Boo counter +1, narrator is a theater kid count +1000

Episode 5:

"You know what this moment needs? A heartfelt song!" – narrator loves the tropes, more for the theater kid pile

Episode 6:

"Calling all boos! Calling all boos!" – Boo counter +1

"Iris clearly wants to join the fun, but right now she's putting the sigh in 'cyclops'. Thankfully, this night is full of surp-eye-ses!" [squeals in delight and self-satisfaction] "That was a good one." – focus on Iris again, and even by MH standards, this is some unabashed pun tomfoolery

Episode 7:

"It's happening! It's happening!!" – narrator is very excited by Iris finally getting a chance at the spotlight

"I'm not crying, there's just something in my nonexistent eyes." – aforementioned "nonexistent eyes"; seems especially moved by Iris's song, maybe finds it relatable?

Episode 8:

"This is my favorite part of the night! The grand finale! Draculaura, where are you going?? We need your vocal range!" – narrator is a theater kid +∞

"I know it seems like capturing the spark will fix your mistake, but, boo, sometimes, you just gotta go with it." – Boo counter +1

"One thing is for certain: I'm enrolling at Monster High next semester! See you scaaare! Booo~!" – two uses of boo this ep, and iirc, this use of ''see you scare'' is new, maybe a nod towards ghosts haunting?

So from this we can gather the narrator is an enthusiastic, bubbly ghost who loves a good show (but not people trying to hog the spotlight), is here for the chaos, and really likes Draculaura and Iris.

Despite her being a literal kid-of-the-theater, I don't get Operetta vibes from this narrator. And though she's bubbly like Sirena Von Boo, there isn't any sea-related wordplay that hints to being a mermaid. River Styxx is also pretty upbeat and cheery though, loves to entertain, and is connected to Greek mythology through her uncle Charon. But that mention of nonexistent eyes, the way some of the narrator's dialogue hints at a special interest in Draculaura, and the possibility they were watching the show through a portal, are all reminiscent of Kiyomi.

The narrator doesn't seem shy and soft-spoken like Kiyomi in g1, but g3's already established its characters aren't meant to be the same as those in g1. And in Kiyomi's case that'd probably be a good thing. The wiki mentions she's self-consciously lawful, cares a lot about honor, and can't stand when people complain, which, as the only explicitly Japanese character (and one of the only two explicitly east Asian characters) in g1, is...a little too much of a stereotype, for my taste. So change is good.

Kinda feel like the narrator could be a mix of Kiyomi Haunterly and River Styxx, both in personality and background. Maybe shy around other people, but more playful and spirited when she's by herself, hence she feels more comfortable watching from a distance and relates to Iris's insecurities. G1 Kiyomi was also brave and curious though, so it'd be interesting if g3 leaned into that a bit more, especially from an angle of her being passionate about performance—maybe stemming from Japanese theater. But then also having River's relation to Charon and connections to Greek myth.

I always thought their characters had very similar color palettes and aesthetics for being introduced in the same line, more so than the rest of the characters, though the line had a lot of pastels and flowy, sheer fabrics overall. And as much as I love River Styxx's design, we didn't see much of her character at all, because she wasn't a main player in Haunted and there were so many other characters that needed more focus as part of the story, like Kiyomi. Personally, I'd like to see g3 introduce new characters as well as bring back old ones, but that's a lot of characters. So combining the most interesting ideas from certain characters that were one-note or didn't get much chance to shine in g1 seems like a smart way to go. Better than leaving some really cool concepts behind entirely, I think.

As a final note, earlier I briefly mentioned the narrator's voice actor, who I found through IMDB. Her name is Merk Nguyen, an openly queer, Vietnamese American who seems very sweet! Not exactly sure what that'd say for the narrator's cultural background, since Kiyomi was specifically a noppera-bō from Japanese folklore, and g3 has been pretty good about their casting in regards to cultures so far. But if the narrator is meant to be Kiyomi and they go for another character with mixed backgrounds, I'd be very happy to see it!

Currently Reading: In This World of Ultraviolet Light by Raul Palma, which is a collection of short stories that tend toward the skrunkly, the macabre, but are also just incredibly truthful. He gave a reading of “Stand Your Ground” last year, and it was so excellent I think it was THE best thing I read all year. It was the kind of story that makes you really want to write, because it’s so good and he’s so good.

Currently watching: We’re rewatching Haikyuu again, in a perpetual cycle of rewatching Haikyuu!! We just finished the Seijou/Karasuno rematch, which was an INCREDIBLY emotionally taxing experience, because I want Karasuno to win but I also want Oikawa to win, and the fine details of that match are overwhelming.

I was swapping anime recs with a friend on LJ the other day, and she was like, “Wow, we have such similar tastes! That’s so rare, as varied as anime can be.” And internally I was like, IT’S BECAUSE YOU ALREADY TOLD ME YOU HATED LONG SERIAL BATTLE SHOUNEN. ToT Nah. I mean, she did say that, but I was intentionally reccing her things I liked that I thought she would also like. XD It’s just that I thought she would like them for the fanservice and the angst, and I like them because of the like, folding tables. (I love you Seijou folding table and banner on the ground.)

I also have 20 minutes left of the series finale of Reservation Dogs, but I don’t want to say goodbye just yet.

Currently consuming: Faildinner, which is distinct from girldinner because it’s when you feel very smart about making dishes that do a good job of using up last week’s leftover ingredients, only to realize you’ve made a tomato-based potato/squash dish and a balsamic vinegar-based chicken dish, which is already ACID ON ACID until you realize you also made a shchi recipe that included SAUERKRAUT.

Currently craving: JUSTICE. Not to be overly dramatic. At work today an adult child said something innocently intended but honestly kind of fucked up and I am so mad about it. It’s not remotely his responsibility to know our ranks or employment histories, but he assumed my colleague was older and more experienced and that I was learning from her, because he could “see the similarities in our teaching style.” Which, I just wanna say, EXCUUUUUSE ME???? I actually have years more experience than her??? I don’t know how old she is but we’re functionally the same age. But she just came back from maternity leave, and those similarities in our style are because I DESIGNED. THAT COURSE. And I gave it to her and told her she was welcome to keep whatever and change whatever, because she just came back from maternity leave and she should get all the shortcuts she needs. But the course is similar to mine because I MADE IT. Like, what a bizarre set of assumptions to make. Again, doesn’t matter, it’s not his business, there’s no reason that’s information he should have or care about, but omg, definitely not over it. Thanks I hate it!! /end rant

Something insane is that Young Sheldon decided to retcon Sheldon not being autistic by saying actually he is his mother just refused to accept that and therefore everyone has lived under the impression that he isn't (which also re contextualizes the "I'm not crazy my mother had me tested" running joke which is now even less of a joke)

Professor Grant

Summary: You heard there was a new teacher for Egyptology and can’t wait to see what this class is about. Especially with all the hype coming from those that have already taken it. 

Does this count as reader insert? It’s second person point of view. I don’t know what I’m doing...

You’re so excited to start your new class on ancient Egyptology. There’s a professor there that everyone raves about. 

Despite him not taking the usual approach to becoming a professor, (rumor has it he showed up one day and no one could get him to leave, which is only partly true), his class is quickly becoming known as THE class to take on the subject. 

He has written papers, articles, books, and debated all the old famous people that were once considered top tier. This man came out of nowhere and pointed to a blip on a map and said “Alexander The Great is here”. 

It also helps a bit that there are a whole bunch of wild rumors about him. Some believe he is a time traveler from Ancient Egypt. Others speculate that he’s some sort of unknown superhero. Some think he’s an alien or one of the Asgardians displaced on earth. It’s hard to see him as any of those things when you pull up his profile picture on the school website. 

Curls, glasses, a goofy smile, a tie with hieroglyphs all over it, and his background is a fish tank. 

First day of class he walks in with his coffee cup, his briefcase (which seems to only contain his lunch), and points to his name on the board. “Hello!” he waves. “My name is Steven, with a V. Steven Grant. I’m here to teach you about Egyptology!” 

There is the briefest of pauses while he sets his things down and collects himself. You have just enough time to wonder ‘who is this man?’ and then he goes off. 

The way he talks, his hands gesturing, his body moving, his pauses, his stares, his smiles… It’s mesmerizing. You can’t help but love the topic as much as he does. You can feel his passion and he makes it all so amazingly reachable for you. For anyone. He could be speaking in ancient Egyptian and you’d still hang on and understand every word. 

Now and then he seems to remember himself and will slow as if unsure if he should still be talking. A sign of someone used to being told to shut up or of an audience that doesn’t care. Once he checks in with the group and is sure everyone is following, he will give the biggest smile and fly off again, pointing to maps and drawing fun scribbles on the board. 

Someone that has seen his class before leans over and whispers to you, “He’s having a good day. Totally with it today.” 

You wonder what that means. 

He holds class twice a week and only a few hours each day. You overheard one student going on about a taxi cab she took home from a party a few nights ago and she swears up and down that it was Professor Grant in a disguise that drove. He acted like he didn’t recognize her. 

Every now and then Professor Grant comes to class and gives a different sort of lecture. His normally cheerful and wide gaze is drawn down into a cranky and unsure glare. He pulls lesson plans from the desk drawer like a substitute teacher and flips through them halfheartedly. “Yeah yeah. I’ve got this terrible headache or whatever. Today we’re supposed to talk about uh… Yeah I don’t know what that is. Read chapter twenty. I’m sure that’s a good one.” 

The next day when Professor Grant comes in, he stares at the notes on his desk. “We just started chapter twelve. Why would we jump to twenty? I wrote it clearly in my instructions what chapter we were on!” 

The girl next to you leans over. “He does this now and then. He once gave a lecture on why the old Egyptian gods were all assholes then dismissed class early. I honestly think those lessons are amazing.” 

“Nah, those are boring.” Someone else leaned in. “I’m here for the other types.” 

“Other types?” You wonder aloud. 

“Yeah. It’s hard to describe but sometimes he comes in and just exudes this whole…mysterious sexy aura.” They sighed and smiled wistfully. 

You wondered what the heck that could mean. You only have to wait a week to find out. He came in one day dressed in form fitting clothes, a popped collar, a tie, and a flat cap. He rushed in ten minutes late and sat down at his desk in a hurry. Looking around, he leaned back in his chair and glanced at his watch. 

“Lo siento. I lost track of time while taking care of some things.” He tapped a finger on the desk as if expecting something to happen. When nothing did, he sighed heavily. “Alright.” He pulled out some notes from the desk and glanced through them. “Okay, we’re on chapter fifteen. I hate this chapter. I always get stuck with this chapter. I think he does this on purpose. Today we are going to review the revival of the gods and reconstruction of the pantheon powers in the new kingdom.” He paused to mutter something under his breath in what sounded a bit like Spanish. “We’re going to start with the moon god Khonshu and how his cult was overturned in favor of Ra.” 

It was a lecture unlike any other. Filled with curses, graphic descriptions of violence, and a bizarre story about Ammit and Khonshu having a nasty break up. At the end of the lesson, he got up and looked like a man in need of a cigarette. “Alright, tomorrow is back to normal. Tonight…. I don’t know, write a page about what your favorite animal is.”

When Professor Grant had collected the papers and stared at the first paper on his desk, he had put his face in his hands and muttered to himself about how he promised not to force chapter fifteen on to someone next semester. 

Even with those odd days, Professor Grant was amazing. You have never been more interested in a subject and never done so well. After all, it was hard not to catch his passion. Even on days where he mumbled as if caught in a haze only to change tactics and deliver some off the wall content, you looked forward to each class. 

You hear he’ll be starting a third day soon where he is going to start teaching hieroglyphic translations. You can’t wait to take that class too.

So I'm super curious which Beatle y'all most associate with vegetarianism. Because Paul and Linda were actually a pretty significant influence on my becoming a vegetarian and later vegan (I was a massive Simpsons fan growing up and actually continue to be now lmao), but now that I'm an avid Beatles fan I moreso associate vegetarianism with George?

So I wonder who other people think of when they think of the normalization of vegetarianism, because that's actually something I very much associate with the beatles, at least personally.

#ash rambles 💚 #i love him soooo much! i know i get stubborn about it sometimes but he really does have my heart #him and ash get together post-game so i love writing him and his development and him learning to be a better person #theyre not together during the game. theyre enemies during the game. theyre also both kinda immature late teenagers/young adults #(i just wanna make it clear that there's nothing weird there going on!! he and ash have had mutual attraction to each other since they were #kids but they dont get together until theyre adults and he is an adult in canon!!!) #but back to what i was saying #his development with ash is sooo goooddd! they spend a little while doing mercenary work together! ash has quite long hair and man ajsjajsh #the way he learns how to take care of her hair always makes me soo warm and fuzzy inside! he may be a bit of a meanie but he is a #surprisingly affectionate bf! f.f8 s/i probably also straightens her curly hair like i do and he just likes helping and stroking her hair #there's a lot of playful bickering though! lots of matches of triple triad too! whoever loses does the dishes LMAAOO #man.. he's so handsome and strong... i love how he's always so dedicated to being a knight and a protector... i know he uses that as an #excuse to like. do horrific things in the game but!!! in the mobile game you can see him develop and i really do like his redemption arc #from mean ass bully to kinda mean ally that'll protect you no matter what. his character is so good especially when you consider that he's #literally been forced into training since he was five. lots of things to analyze and think about there #but back to the knight thing!! he always says he's ash's knight! makes my heart flutter hehe! though he is very well-aware that ash could #kick his ass... and he loves it! he's not big on using her beloved guns (shes very picky about who touches her sweethearts too) but he does #like watching her epic gunslinger gf in action hehehe! okay yeah i think thats enough rambling for now #i got sick 😔 i'm okay and it'll pass but expect a lot of half-asleep f/o rambles LMAAOOO #okay yeah. tldr: i <3 s.eifer a.lmasy #your knight until the end 🤍

#took me like a year to read bc i would pick it up like every 3 months read 5 pages and then get distracted #but it was good i listened to the audiobook as i read sometimes instead of just reading it myself and karen savage is so fun to listen to #cozy cozy cozy book makes me wanna watch every adaptation of it #i still think darcy and liz are kinda…..like idk i like them but i wanted more depth maybe #but the vibes were so good i don’t Really care much about that . i think that’s why the audiobook is lovely to listen to i was so immersed #surprisingly would love to reread it even tho i’m not much of a rereader esp with classics but it was genuinely just warm and comfy #h talks

#little life update #my hair is growing back so i feel super confident #the pills are contributing to some weight gain which is annoying but i also stopped working out for like a good three weeks so that can’t #help #started talking to two of my ex’s purely for sex and because i had a weird breakdown about how i can never be loved #they were the two ex’s i fell so hard over #and surprisingly now that i’m sleeping with them i feel nothing romantic #sex drive is at an all time low because of the medication i’m taking for my hair so i deleted all my dating crap #it’s super nice not wasting like an hour to three and some really mediocre dick #things are going well at work #i finally feel like i’m thriving in my new position #so yeah i’m doing well :)

#i think theres a single place from my 10 january applications that hasnt responded yet. so im considering it as good as gone too #and we are now hitting the incredibly awful times for job searching since basically all summer jobs are gone so applying to anything is bad #the only good thing is that i have no deadlines or requirements as of right now. i havent been contacted by officials since my last ones #expired in january but i keep being able to file for unemployment benefits so. idk man. i dont wanna contact them cause then my four #applications a month requirement returns and its SO fucking stressful #like maybe thats why i was much better last month. i didnt have to do that. i would have sent out applications even without the requirement #if there was places but there were like. nothing. so i didnt. and i feel sooooo much better about it #like ofc i would like a job still. obviously. but at the same time when i didnt have to send useless applications that just made me feel #fuck awful and useless and all the other negative emotions? yeah i do feel better.
