#138: 5 Ways to Focus on Your Writing

With everything that’s been going on over the past several weeks, staying focused has been frustratingly difficult for me. There’s a lot to be anxious about – the numbers on the news going up, the government briefings getting more and more uncomfortable. The increased cognitive load wreaks havoc on any type of deep work that I need to do – writing, reading, programming.

Instead, I’m always looking for the refresh button, eagerly awaiting the next bite-sized news item that always ends up being another speculation at best. I’m well aware that I’m not getting any value from reading those live updates — reading War and Peace backwards would probably have about the same effect. But why is it so difficult to step back?

In this post, I’d like to share the strategies that I’ve been using to combat these viral bouts of procrastination. If I got anything done since the lockdown started, I was because I used one or more of these hacks.

(1) Time Your Sessions

This is an old trick but a good one.

Set a timer for however long you wish you wish to write and write away. You’re not allowed to do anything else until it rings.

You can use a time tracker like Toggl or one of the apps that block certain websites until the time is up to ensure compliance. I like using the Forest app on my phone.

(2) Track your words

Timing your writing sessions is great, but what if you don’t feel motivated enough to even schedule one?

I’m a big fan of tracking your writing – how many words you write and when. Just like tracking calories or workouts, the simple act of recording them will result in a change of behaviour. By tracking what you wrote, you’re also tracking how much time you’ve wasted – if you haven’t written anything for weeks, you’ll have a clear record of that.

That’s what does it for me – seeing all opportunities to get words done that I’ve missed. I start questioning whether I should be pursuing writing in the first place when I’m clearly not doing it, and that gets me back on track.

(3) Build a streak

Another way to stay motivated is to build streaks. Whether you’re developing a new writing habit or maintaining an existing one, ticking a box every day can be a surprisingly powerful way to stay on track.

The more days you have on your streak, the more you’ll want to keep going. For me, the key to streaks is to make the criteria for ticking that box as easy as possible – like reading 5 pages or writing 200 words.

On busy days, I might bang out 200 words on my phone while queuing at the supermarket. On good days, those 200 words are just enough to get me to the flow of a writing session. Low expectations are the key.

You can use a grid printout. The Streaks iPhone app works pretty well, and Writing Analytics also supports streaks.

(4) Get Accountability

A few things are better to spark a fire under your ass than external accountability. You have several options here – from posting your daily word counts on social media to sharing your goals with friends or writing group.

Having to explain your repeated failures to write anything to another person can be very uncomfortable. That really is the point – it becomes easier to write than face the embarrassment.

Some writers find a writing coach or accountability partner and check in with them regularly to make sure both are getting their writing done. When all else fails, it might be a sign that you need one.

(5) Match time spent reading the news with writing

Checking out social media and reading the news is the first thing many people do every day. It’s also a huge mistake. You’re barely awake and already distracted.

What if you could only check social media and read the news for as long as you’ve spent writing that day? Wanna see if the world is still on fire? Write for 15 minutes and you earn 15 minutes on Twitter.

Staying off the news and social media may be unrealistic, but you can make sure that you strike the right balance of consumption and creativity by putting your writing first.

These were some of the hacks that I use to focus on my writing. Normally, I will combine at least two or three and switch them up depending on how much support I need at a given time.

I hope that they’ll help you be a more productive writer at least until we figure a way out of this pandemic.

i'm okay! i mean relatively speaking; I'm still an overly intense, anxious ball of errant electrons piloting a stomach and a bunch of tendons around space earth twenty twenty one, much to my continued horror and confusion

quick tldr: i've been in and out of hospital on a revolving door for the last couple of months once again because quelle surprise, 2021 Just Isn't Done Fucking About With Me

however because of this i haven't been able to post a lot. which is enough of a sin in itself, but it meant in turn that because - in tumblr's infinite wisdom - you can't pause queued content, the daily song queue ended up quickly burying the rest of everything else, instead of being interspersed between a sprinkling of my usual stuff each day, which was my original intention when setting it up. i mean, i wouldn't post them if i didn't enjoy them in the first place, but variety being spice and all that. i quite like this little corner and i'd like anyone who stumbles across it to, too

so what i did was, in tiny bursts, manually moved my remaining song queue (of roughly 200 still in there, lol) one by one into my drafts. so they're still ready to go, but once i'm fully well again i can post them at a slightly more relaxed pace instead of having to miss some time, during which the daily post robot goes mad with power and drowns out everything else on my blog

basically the moral of the story is, as we all know, blog aesthetics always come first, no matter the price. hopefully it shouldn't be too long before regularly scheduled programming is resumed again

My blog was undiscovered for a while before it grew in popularity, which at the time it was a little frustrating at first…so I can understand. Here’s the advice I give based off of my experience: (this is gonna be a long post so i’ll insert a “read more”)

Get shaders. Unfortunately not everyone can use shaders, so if you can, that is definitely a start. Shaders create a sense of realism to your content.

Get a pretty texture pack. The most popular one on Tumblr is Mizunos 16 Craft but there are other good ones out there. This combined with the shaders can lead to something really eye-catching.

Be your own photographer. When capturing your builds or scenery, work with all the angles of your subject and experiment with your screen capture. For example, sometimes a build or a pretty mountain doesn’t look good if you’re standing on the ground and looks better if you float up to a certain height. Perspective is key sometimes. What I do, is I take a bunch of pictures/recordings of one thing in all kinds of angles and then I choose the best ones. Optifine, the program that runs shaders, has a zoom option for the game which is really useful for taking screenshots or gifs with perspectives the vanilla game doesn’t offer. If you want to record, try finding a recorder that doesn’t mess with your FPS.

Use Photoshop or a photo editing program. A lot of my screenshots and wallpapers are enhanced using Photoshop. Try experimenting with an editing program (add filters, blurs, and color vibrance, etc.) Usually these enhancements are very important! Especially when making wallpapers. EZGIF, the site I use to convert videos into gifs, have decent editing options for your gifs as well.

Post regularly/ queue your posts up. The more content you give out, the more likely people will start to notice you. And sometimes it means not giving up even though you may feel discouraged. When I first started, I was lucky enough to get 10 notes on my videos, and for a while my blog felt empty. But the more original content I created, I slowly started to gain more followers. Make sure you post at a good pace. You don’t want to bombard your followers with a long line of posts on their dashboard, lol. Try posting at least 2-4 posts a day, or use the queue option. I set the queue settings to 3 posts a day; sometimes 2 or 4, depending on how I feel. You can choose which hours of the day as well, in case you don’t want your queued posts to be posted at 3AM, or while you’re asleep, for example. I 100% recommend using queue!

Use your tags wisely. When posting something, make sure you’re tagging your content correctly! Include tags like #mineblr or even #gaming. Try to incorporate anything in your photos/gifs/videos into tags. For example, if you are posting about trees or flowers, use #trees, #flowers, or even #nature. Some of these tags are very general which is good for people outside of mineblr to see. 

Work with trial and error. I think this step is very important to understand as this crucial step can lead you to a successful blog. At first, I didn’t know if my lo-fi videos would get any attention, but after gaining a few followers, the notes blew up and I realized I was actually creating something people liked! There’s always going to be hits and misses with your content. There’s always gonna be something that you create that no one will care for, and that’s okay. We’ve all been though this at some point on Tumblr, especially the beginning! It really sucks, but who cares, just keep posting. Experiment with ideas or even familiar ones on the website. In my personal opinion, try doing something with your Minecraft content that no one has done before. I noticed nobody made minecraft lo-fi videos before I did, which I think is why people like them so much, it added something new to mineblr. I think you can do something similar! There’s no limits to what you can create, and no harm in trying. :)

Create content you find enjoyable for yourself, not just for other people. If you are creating content specifically to gain more people, eventually you will consider what you’re doing as a chore, instead of for fun. Unfortunately I did this with my old blog. I made content for others and was so worried about my follower count that I actually wasn’t enjoying making that content, and I ended up deleting the blog. But honestly I love chillcrafting! What I do is super fun, and I recommend finding that happiness first!

Don’t give up. I know it sounds cheesy. But this is sooo so important. There was a time where I wanted to give up on this blog. But I just shrugged that off, experimented, grew some patience and eventually became successful. Of course it’s not that easy, and I acknowledge it. But it definitely is possible!

I am going to be.... busy though. Not gone, just busy. Sunday I have work in the morning ( which is fine I actually like working on my birthday ) and then I have a not-so-surprise surprise party ( I know its coming, I know where even tho I am not supposed too I just don’t know time or who is invited/who can or can’t come etc ). That will probably mean drunk posting. You’ve been warned! 

After that, I am off for three days. My husband and I booked a trip to Hershey Park! I haven’t been since I was three and he has never been so I am very excited but basically I don’t know if or when I’ll have time to be on for those three days. I am here for now, but I do have work later tonight and Saturday morning as well so limited time but I have a plan! My trusty queue will hold all my replies to post while I’m away as well as a few memes and posts etc so you’ll still be stuck with me!

This was our MTGinktober for “Found,” starring Liliana and Stuffy Doll! And this concludes our coverage of MTGinktober 2017! Thanks so much for tuning in and hanging out! We’ve got a special treat coming up next before we return to our regularly scheduled programming, but in the meantime, I guess I should explain the story behind this illustration! Submitted for the approval of the Midrange Society, I call this story, “Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope” -- 

Liliana was only five so she was understandably upset that everyone was paying attention to this freshly four-year-old interloper instead of her, just because it was his birthday--she would alternate between screaming, holding her breath, and knocking over the decorations that had been so carefully prepared by the grownups. But this was the first year Josu was really able to understand why everyone was showering him with attention on this particular day.  He loved his sister very much and saw how angry she was about something today and that made him sad. He decided to make her a doll that she could always be angry at--that would make her happy!

While the grownups chatted and leisurely cleaned up after Liliana's latest riot, Josu raided the grownups' cloakroom to shred some sleeves and skim some stuffing from the clothing he found stored there.  His tiny, little fingers could only fashion a crude little poppet out of these makeshift materials, but he made sure to decorate it with the especially colorful paints that one of the grownups had left in his coat while their owner, the dark visitor in extravagant robes, who was supposed to be cheerily painting faces at this very moment, was instead busy helping clean up toppled decor and grumbling with his peers the way grownups always mutter amongst themselves after a loud confrontation with a child.   That grave-voiced grownup, who seemed to float when he walked, wore rich robes that matched the coat currently being pilfered, and Josu noticed they both smelled of some bitter, smoky scent. They called him the Fancy Man.  He had been just about ready to begin painting the excited, queued children's faces when Liliana's most recent eruption occurred. "Ha!" she blurted out, but instantly covered her mouth with both hands to stop the laughter from escaping any further.  Josu did the same, sharing in the delight of torturing their helpless, mutual acquaintance.  Stifling nighttime laughter, especially with a co-conspirator, always made laughing that much more challenging to suppress. I took a much needed and impromptu break, but I think I will be returning to Tumblr now! I’ve already scrolled down my feed and queued a bunch of posts and it’s reminded me of how much I love Tumblr and all these beautiful and encouraging posts!! –something that has helped me a lot in holding on to hope, and knowing that what I reblog or post is hopefully helping someone else as well 💕

I basically ended up spending less and less time on Tumblr until I didn’t even go on Tumblr at all due to a combination of it being triggering more often than not, and also I was spending a lot less time in general on the computer and my phone because I got a dog!! We adopted a Siberian Husky 🐾 and he is largely the reason I’m still alive. (Pictures to come hehe)

Back to the part about Tumblr being more triggering: I was at a vulnerable place and it was getting too overwhelming for me to see that all these other people are struggling. So I needed a break from that so I could continue on and focus on my own recovery. But it wasn’t just “negative” posts that were triggering… my heart couldn’t handle seeing others post about their sessions or interactions with their therapist. Because after I went to Residential for about 3 months, it was decided that I would not return to my previous therapist, and I am still very much grieving that loss and seeing those posts only made me miss her more. The emotions are still so raw, as I’m even tearing up now just writing this… I just don’t know when or how it’s supposed to get any better… I feared so much from the very moment that we discussed the possibility of returning to her that I could not live without her. And by that I mean I feared I would have to kill myself because I couldn’t handle it. At the core, I still have this belief that I am going to die from this. But it’s been 5 months since I discharged from residential, and it’s been 8 months without having her or contact with her… and I am still alive. So I guess that’s proof that I can live without her, but I’m still suicidal so to me it doesn’t really mean I’m able to live without her…

I’ve been going to a new DBT clinic for treatment which has an amazing team, program, and community. I have a great new therapist, but it’s been so incredibly painful to be working with someone new and who is not my old therapist. In residential it was different because I wasn’t supposed to be in her care anyway and I knew this was only temporary, and it was still painful as hell not to have her. So now that pain has only been magnified. I’m terrified of getting too close so I’ve been putting up a wall. I desperately want this relationship to work and be effective, but it’s too painful. Just being in the presence of another therapist brings up so much grief and every little thing reminds me of her and then I just get stuck in flashbacks of memories and interactions and it’s so so painful because I know I don’t have that anymore and likely can’t have that again. I want my new therapist’s support but at the same time it’s so triggering. Everything feels triggering.

It just feels so unfair because now it seems like we’re not even working on the issues that brought me to treatment in the first place, because of this grief that we are having to work through instead. Grief that feels too intense for me to even process or properly grieve and heal from. I guess some things have gotten a bit easier– like being able to text my therapist for phone coaching and not crying because I used to text my old therapist for help– So that does show that some things have gotten easier, and that gives me hope that it can all get better.

I’ll stop writing now before I write a novel that no one is going to read all the way through anyway haha. But if you have taken the time to read all of this, thank you, I do appreciate it. It helps to just get this out in writing.

So in summary, I am still grieving. I am still actively suicidal. Self-harm has decreased a lot though. And I’m also not as depressed! believe it or not. I fill my day with activities that I enjoy and spend time with family and friends and I’m babysitting regularly which also brings a lot of joy and a sense of mastery. And my new dog has brought so much joy into my life, and is the reason I get out of bed every morning (literally, because he needs to pee). And thanks to him (and my parents who got us the dog haha) I’m running again and spending a lot more time outdoors.

I have been close to giving up and have started planning my suicide quite a few times these past 5 months, but each time I’ve found reason to give things another chance. So I am still here. I am still going. I still have hope.

Trump recasts immigration by taking ‘shackles off’ border agents

ATLANTA AND TUCSON, ARIZ.--Minutes after Daniela Vargas spoke to the press in Jackson, Miss., on Wednesday, the car in which she was riding slowed down and pulled over. The uniformed men who came to the door reportedly said, “You know who we are, and why we are here.”

She did.

Ms. Vargas, a 20-something who came to the United States from Argentina as a 7-year-old, had last month seen immigration agents detain the rest of her family. As it turns out, she had been late in sending in a $495 renewal fee for the Obama-era program that allows some young undocumented immigrants like her to stay in the country--prompting her detention Wednesday.

Her detention provides a poignant glimpse into what immigration experts call a more personal, even vindictive, style of enforcement intended to assert muscular new federal authority over immigrant communities.

For its part, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) called the detention of Vargas routine, and says its tactics haven’t changed markedly under President Trump. But Rep. Bennie Thompson (D) of Mississippi called the treatment of Vargas, a musician and aspiring teacher, “anything but” routine.

To be sure, Mr. Trump has vowed to reshape America’s position toward illegal immigration. But the incidents like the one in Mississippi this week might be happening less because of a grand Trump plan, and more as a result of what happens when, as Press Secretary Sean Spicer put it, America “takes the shackles off” federal agents.

The nation’s 6,500 ICE special agents fought President Obama for eight years and even sued him over the program that allowed Vargas to stay in the country legally, known as DACA.

They “have long chafed under the idea that they can’t do the job they think they’re supposed to do,” says Rick Su, an immigration expert at the University at Buffalo School of Law in New York. “And now Trump has told them, ‘Do whatever job you want to do. We’re not here to question your judgment.’”

The result so far has been a building parade of human drama and whip-tails of policy-in-action, testing America’s welcome stance toward immigrants and visitors.

“What we’re seeing is something that on one hand is more broad and at the same time, at least anecdotally, more selective--in a different way--in terms of the potential targeting of people that seem to be activists,” says Jim Henson, director of the Texas Politics Project at the University of Texas in Austin. “That is being denied officially, but certainly the impression is growing that there has been a kind of unshackling [of deportation agents]. Whether it’s by central directive or local fiat, there is more targeting going on.”

The Vargas arrest came amid growing concerns among the 750,000 young people who came out of the shadows to apply for DACA--Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals. It allows some undocumented immigrants who entered the US as children to apply for renewable two-year deportation deferrals.

Ironically, new immigration enforcement memos from the Department of Homeland Security say that DACA will remain in force. But in finding a loophole to detain Vargas, immigration agents highlighted their broad new authority under those memos.

The Obama administration carried out large immigration raids, too--to the point where some immigrant groups derisively called Mr. Obama the “deporter-in-chief.” Yet the Obama administration laid out a careful guidelines that prioritized the removal of criminals while making humanitarian exceptions for family situations and an immigrant’s “status as a victim.”

Among the beneficiaries of Obama’s approach was Jesus Moroyoqui, a landscaper and father of three US-born children in Tucson, Ariz. He has lived here for 20 years and has been deported to Mexico previously, but the last time he landed in immigration detention after a traffic stop, he was allowed to stay.

Immigration enforcement these days, however, feels “more aggressive,” leaving him anxious, he tells the Monitor.

Indeed, there are indications that immigration agents are going to new lengths to pick off “low-hanging fruit,” as Professor Su says.

Last month, Daniel Ramirez Medina, a DACA recipient, was detained in Seattle after ICE agents showed up at his house to detain his father, who is here illegally. US authorities claimed that Mr. Medina had admitted to being a gang member. His lawyers dispute that, and have now sued the federal government, claiming that they have no constitutional right to detain the young man.

Also last month, ICE agents acted with unusual boldness when they entered a courthouse in El Paso, Texas, to detain a transgender woman trying to get a restraining order against an abuser. While the woman had a criminal record and had been deported before, the decision by agents to enter a courthouse was “unacceptable,” El Paso County Judge Veronica Escobar told reporters.

In this atmosphere, DACA recipients feel in limbo, both with promises of protection--with Trump calling them “incredible kids” who he wants to treat with “great heart”--but also doubts about the strength of such promises.

“Compared to other immigration priorities that Trump has set in place, DACA exists in this strange realm,” says Su.

Picking up activists and others who seem to thumb their nose at authorities may be particularly attractive, he says. In that light, Vargas’s “brazenness” turned the situation into “a personal sort of power dynamic.”

ICE did not return emailed inquiries about the arrest. In a statement, an ICE spokesman confirmed that immigration officials took Vargas, “an unlawfully present Argentinian citizen,” into custody Wednesday “during a targeted immigration enforcement action” after the agency verified that her DACA status had lapsed.

Immigration agents are not all supportive of ramped-up enforcement. The fact-checking site Politifact found Trump’s assertion that he was “unanimously endorsed” by border agents “mostly false.” But perhaps no other corner of the federal bureaucracy fought Obama as furiously, with both unions regularly condemning his moves to shape immigration policy.

Calling Trump’s moves “swift and decisive,” ICE union head Chris Crane wrote in a statement last month that the president’s policies will “make America safer and more prosperous.” Additionally, he said, morale among agents has “increased exponentially.”

Immigrant groups have noticed. In Tucson on Thursday night, undocumented immigrants queued up to receive notarized legal forms that would ensure access to a lawyer if they’re detained.

Blanca Sanchez, a Mexico native who has lived in the US without legal status for about 15 years, says carrying the form with her at all times will help her feel more secure.

“There have always been raids, but things seem to be getting tougher,” she says.

The three-hourly tests I take during the first half of the flight reflect the demands of this trip. My blood pressure is elevated, though not high, and my heart rate picking up. My mood is light, though darkening very gradually.

Three Hours In

The physical pressure of this experiment is clear. Around me, passengers are standing up just to stay awake. That dozy frequent flyer at the front of the plane is asleep, again.

While I’m finding this regime fairly challenging — and I’m not even in a do-it-tough economy seat — I try to keep things in perspective. After I first wrote about this upcoming flight last week, one reader emailed to urge me into a stouter mindset. During the Korean War in the early 1950s, he said, he regularly flew 40-hour reconnaissance missions with crew rotations every six hours. “Man up,” the 83-year-old told me. Point taken.

Four Hours In

Marie Carroll, a professor at the University of Sydney who’s overseeing the passenger research on the flight, rallies her troops at the back of the plane. “This is the time, guys, when we really have to work through this,” she tells them. Moments later, they’re leaning against the food trolleys in the galley, stretching. Next, they perform upright press-ups among the empty economy sets. As a finale, they attempt synchronized dance moves in the aisles. All in the name of science.

It looks like cabaret, but beating jet lag is serious business. Beyond the sleepless nights and daytime fatigue, experts say critical processes including heart function and metabolism are upset when the body clock gets disrupted.

Seven Hours In

A second meal arrives, and not a moment too soon. It’s heavy on carbohydrates and designed to send us to sleep. The sweet potato soup with creme fraiche is thick and luxurious, the toasted cheese sandwich less so. The chef on the plane tells me he’s been preparing our meals for three days.

The lights are dimmed at last, and it feels like I’ve been released. I crash for six hours straight. That’s longer than I can remember sleeping without waking on any other flight, even with the business-class privilege of a flat bed.

Fourteen Hours In

Across the board, my own medical tests suggest I’m coping. My blood pressure, which the doctor in Sydney said would be a good gauge of stress and fatigue, is back to normal. My heart’s pumping slower, I ace my memory test, and my questionnaire shows my mood is brighter.

The research on the passengers and crew will feed into Project Sunrise, Qantas’s plan to start direct commercial services connecting Sydney with New York and London. Other super-long flights from Australia’s eastern seaboard to South America and Africa might follow, Qantas says.

On board, Chief Executive Officer Alan Joyce tells me he’ll “absolutely” roll out this flight’s regime on his other long routes — if the science shows it helps. The trick is accommodating those who want to drink and snooze at will, Joyce says.

But don’t go booking your round-the-world flights just yet. Qantas needs new planes from Boeing or Airbus SE that can do the job with a full load of passengers, and a new deal with crew to work longer than 20 hours. “It needs everything to come together,” Joyce says. He initially had dreams of turning these super-long flights into flying hotels, with sleeping berths or a work-out zone. That vision gave way to reality when profit margins proved too tight to waste space on such luxuries.

Our plane doesn’t have the range to haul a full load of passengers with luggage to Sydney. It took off with its fuel tanks maxed out — about 101 tons. To keep the weight down, there’s no cargo, and food and drink are limited. In New York, the captain had seemed confident we’d make it to Sydney with gas to spare. He planned on landing with six tons of fuel, enough to stay airborne for another 90 minutes.

Seventeen Hours In

Breakfast time, and there’s no limp sausage. Instead, it’s a bowl of ancient grains, avocado puree, warm haloumi cheese and a herb salad. This flight is turning everything on its head.

One of the frequent flyers, Sydney-based investor Nick Mole, says he got almost eight hours’ sleep and feels good. What about a full day’s work after landing? “I probably could do that,” he says. He thinks the bigger test will be how he copes in a couple of days.

Preparing to Land

I feel better now than I did after flying to New York from Sydney a few days ago with one stop. That trip included a grating hour and a half queuing at immigration in Los Angeles with hundreds of other zombified travelers.

Personally, I would choose a direct Sydney-New York flight over one with a layover. But it won’t suit everyone: It took discipline and work to stick to the no-sleep routine in the first half of this flight. There may be a benefit to switching to the destination time immediately, but it comes at a price. I feel like I had to earn it.
