A Day in New York City v3.3.6 (Classic Mac, David A. Zatz, 1991-1995)
A satirical simulator of life in 90's New York, inspired by the author's experiences. Structured like a Twine, but started eighteen years before Twine's release. Made in the omni-purpose anything-maker HyperCard. You can play it in your browser here.
The game is in the disk named 'disk'. But beforehand, to activate sound: ensure the speaker icon on the right doesn't have an X by it - click it if it does. Then, after startup is finished, go to Control Panels under the Apple menu at the upper left, use the scrollbar to scroll down to Sound, open it, then turn up the sound above zero. If you forget, you can quit to the emulated desktop with Alt-Q.

Sooo, how do feel about When the Angels Left the Old Country then? I was going to check it out, but I'd love more thoughts on it.
I LOVE WHEN THE ANGELS LEFT THE OLD COUNTRY
READ WHEN THE ANGELS LEFT THE OLD COUNTRY BY SACHA LAMB
i just finished reading it for the third time and it came out in: october 2022
it's written in the tone of a classic yiddish folktale in a way that's really refreshing and fun, especially if you're used to reading books that don't have a ton going on stylistically - it's technically YA, but definitely doing something different from most other YA in terms of sheer style while remaining a very fun coming of age story for both the human and angelic characters. on a craft level it's excellent!
all the characters are super fun and interesting and well imagined - there's a pretty small core group with a larger ensemble cast, and all of the core characters are REALLY well developed - and even the minor ensemble cast each get moments of narrative insight into their lives and emotional landscapes in a really fun way. AS u May Know i am constantly writing fanned fictioneds but i actually don't really feel the need to write any for angels even tho i love it so much, simply bc i mostly just don't have anything to add!
my commentary earlier re: angels containing textual homophobia & antisemitism refers to those as intentional threats in the story, NOT like . "ohh angels is homophobic" JUST TO CLARIFY LOL!!!! it is a deeply queer and jewish book and those elements are there on purpose as part of the story being told
to try to elaborate while not totally spoiling, EYE personally really love the way in which the homophobia is present in the story - i DON'T generally want to read characters being called slurs or being violently assaulted - but i Also don't particularly like or appreciate books where homophobia just like magically isn't part of the world, esp with books like angels where it's set essentially in our universe... like, the idea of someone trying to write abt queer characters navigating the pale of settlement and ellis island and early 20th c nyc Without feeling the threat of homophobia in addition to the antisemitism and ableism and racism that are intrinsic features of those settings... would be repugnant lol
like, there's really only a couple moments where "the idea of homophobia" is specifically invoked, but its reality is BAKED into the ways the characters interact with the world and each other in a really realistic and subtle way. i think lamb does a really good job of like... making it clear what the characters have words for and what they don't. they all know exactly what antisemitism is and how it looks and functions, bc a core part of jewish tradition and celebration is literally just talking about all th times gentiles have tried to destroy jewish people. but the characters DON'T really have words and structures for how they're affected by ableism and homophobia or even really straight up misogyny - the reader is expected to do that work of identification themself in a way i really love
anyway. to anon and to anyone else who has been thinking abt reading when the angels left the old country: you should read when the angels left the old country 🫡

I feel like I already know the answer to this, probably (LOL), but if you could add any other Square Enix series to Kingdom Hearts, what would it be and why? Bravely Default, Dragon Quest, NieR, The Bouncer, Parasite Eve, Forspoken, the Mana series, Xenoblade Chronicles, Valkyrie Profile, Fullmetal Alchemist, Soul Eater? Something else I didn't list here? (You can cheat and choose more than one, if you want:))
Actually, I don't know if I would add any other series. Don't get me wrong, I love the characters from a lot of these, but for me it's a question of how well they could fit into KH without losing the things about them that make them unique, you know?
I love the cast of NieR and NieR: Automata, but those games are SO dark, and a lot of the appeal of those games is the uniquely bleak and hopeless atmosphere, and I can't see them being added to KH without scrubbing away any of the traits that made people like them in the first place. Parasite Eve, too, falls into this category. I mean, The 3rd Birthday kinda already proved why wackier JRPG plots don't work with that cast, they're far too grounded for it. At best you could hope for some of them as background NPCs in an Enchanted NYC, but they'd basically have to be the equivalent of Setzer's KH2 appearance and at that point it just feels kinda cheap
Characters from The Bouncer could make decent cameo appearances in a KH-exclusive world like Twilight Town, since that game is obscure enough that I doubt anyone would get super offended if they were represented weirdly or relegated to just a cameo. But that would also run into the same issue as the Parasite Eve example, where the cameo doesn't really do much other than go "oooooh, look, CHARACTER" (which is my main issue with the use of some of the FF characters in KH already). Alas, this one will probably only ever be referenced as Pence's Dog Street shirt and that's probably for the best given how weird that game is
And then there's just a ton of games that I don't know enough about to say. Forspoken, Octopath Traveler, and Triangle Strategy all come to mind
If they had to bring other properties in, then Bravely Default would work the best for me, at least of the properties you listed that are actually Square Enix owned-and-produced and not just Square Enix published and/or affiliated. Not only is Bravely Default meant to evoke classic Final Fantasy, so it's not too far off from what's already in the game, but the characters already have a lot of "modernisms" in their speech and behaviors that would make them very adaptable to a lot of different worlds in KH and the tone of the games overall. Not to mention that the classical fantasy setting of the games could be pretty reminiscent of some of the more fantasy-focused Disney films, allowing them to blend together. I'm imagining, like... an Edea cameo in Arendelle, not unlike Auron in Olympus. That all being said, I've never played Bravely Default II, so I can't say how well that one would hold up. I'm only thinking of Bravely Default and Bravely Second's casts
And while I do like Xenoblade Chronicles, I would never call them Square Enix series. That's not even close to accurate. Those games are produced by Monolith Soft, and while the company was founded by an ex-Square game director and a lot of the initial employees there were ex-Square employees who brought a lot of those same sensibilities over, the company itself really has nothing to do with them. Would I like it if Nomura's guest designed characters from Xenoblade 2 showed up? Sure, I think having Jin and Lauriam interact could be funny. Or Mikhail and Demyx. But it's not going to happen, because those aren't Square Enix characters. Sora's just gonna have to hang out with Shulk, Pyra, and Mythra in Super Smash Bros. and leave it at that

long ass theory anon here again! i was just reading through some of the past and newer comments, and it's cool that we ended up at the same conclusion: something happened between J + R today.
as of now, the likely set of events seems like this:
1). Tbosas tour and theater run comes to an end. J's glad but becomes annoyed when R keeps posting about T. Stuff like that can build up and explode quickly.
2). When R bought the T shirt, she probably didn't think much of it - more like a "hey this is funny, isn't it? I'm Lucy Gray and I want to fix Coryo! And it's T's birthday soon." But J (perhaps a bit understandably) didn't like that.
3). In my head, they fought before she shared the pics, and not after. The vibes of the original post were already a bit off to me, and I don't know about everyone else but a great reason to be out in public early in the morning is if you fought and want to clear your head. R probably shared her idea about the Coryo shirt, and he responded badly, and maybe other issues/incidents came up as well. R, angry at J but also knowing why he's so uncomfortable with the shirt (my reasoning being in my previous post), shares those pics and says "i love you T" knowing it'll make him more mad. Classic fighting couple behavior.
4). She goes about her day (and it is telling that she was embarrassed to be recognized in the shirt, it's not 100% friendly, normal behavior imo, even if it isn't romantic) and interacts with fans. When they reference J, her mood turns bad and she replies curtly. But she doesn't share any other zeglyth content because it's not like she wants this to be a big fight. Just enough to bother J.
5). Later in the day, maybe they're still a bit icy, or maybe it even got worse because of her post. and she ends up sharing that shady message on instagram.
Am I reading into it? Yes. Am I reaching? Yes. But this is fun!
I think some of other anons are right! J is currently filming for his new project (idk if he’s in NYC or not) but since their long distance right now - it could be causing some irritation!
Yeah I don’t think she thought anything of the shirt :) it was a funny thing she planned but I do think small things like this can build and cause friction
She was up early eating a burger lol that’s so funny! Unless she wore the shirt last night and posted today? Who knows! Maybe R and J didn’t fight at all and he’s ignoring her
It’s fun to reach sometimes! We’re feeding our own delusions

I feel bad that instagram was ruined for him, he used to post all the time, interact with fans, and then he only posted promos and stories to draw attention to things that were important to him. He didn't post about the recent charity ball, or share his classic one pic while in character (as he does for most of his characters) while shooting the Gamestop film, did he post about NYC CC? Will he post about Sharper? I totally support his break for his own mental health cause 9 million people following, there's gotta be a large number of bad apples. I know I encountered a few for supporting him that prevented me from posting further on tiktok and just ruined the experience. 🙄 I hope he returns but he's well established and a grown man and social media is not what it once was sadly 💔

Misery (1990)
Tumblr media
For an author of such prolific output, the writing process certainly terrifies Steven King.  Writer’s block is enough to drive a man mad in The Shining.  But with Misery, it’s not just an internal process but the prospect of interacting with the audience of one’s output which incites terror.  Annie Wilkes is a toxic fan to the Nth degree with a dash of the classic King religious whacko undercurrent.  For all of her devotion to Paul Sheldon’s Misery novels, she can’t handle the truth as he chooses to make it.  Killing off the romantic heroine of his series so he can go in different directions, simply unacceptable.  Fortunately for her, Wilkes has the author captive in her home!  What better occasion for some creative rewrites.  Maybe she should have held out until internet fan-fiction forums were a thing so she could do her own writing.  Her singular, psychotic drive paired with a folksy attitude makes it all the more chilling.  She won’t hesitate to break Sheldon’s ankles but can put on a nice face for the sheriff and can’t pronounce ‘Dom Perignon’.  The Princess Bride would certainly be a different book if she’d been in the bedroom with grandpa rather than the little kid.
As with The Shining, isolation is another key aspect to the frights in this Rob Reiner joint.  At outset, Sheldon’s retreat in Colorado seems to be the ideal form of what Jack Torrance had been aiming for in taking on the role of caretaker at the Overlook Hotel.  Sheldon finishes his manuscript, drinks his champagne, and puffs his cigarette.  Yet this remote locale in its own indirect manner put him on a collision course with Annie Wilkes.  In Annie’s home, he is utterly alone, no hope for escape but through his writing.  And that he does, burning them and forcing her to eat his words.

Hello semi-patron saint of the mbta! I am actually moving to boston and will be almost entirely reliant on the bus system and maybe the orange line (but all the places i want to go are on the green line.... 🥺). do you have any general recommendations? things to do/not do/watch out for on the bus? (i am a country bumpkin and lack all social skills so jot that down)
thank you tremendously for any knowledge you wish to bestow!! in supplication i give you this fruit 🍎🍉🍊🍋🥝🍐🍇
Thank you for the offering, I accept the fruit :) I have no idea if this is helpful but I like transit systems a normal amount
Idk how familiar you are with any other buses and trains, but I mean the mbta generally works like other transit systems in most regards. I’m always torn between dire complaints and protesting that at least it’s better than a lot of places. Boston (and nyc) do have a certain hm,, interpersonal public coldness, I would say, so don’t expect to talk to people. Or make eye contact. Or smile. Results may vary and I used to run little social interaction experiments on the mbta in high school, but by and large Bostonians in public do not want you to interact with them. They might help you if you need it but they won’t small-talk.
Specifics I will try to put under a cut lol sorry if it doesn’t work
As far as the T goes I like the orange line, so that’s good. It usually functions except for a couple times it’s caught fire. I’ve also heard the best random subway musicians playing in orange line stations. Also you can at least connect directly to the green line from orange. The green line is.. not my beloved. I’ve taken it more than any other and despite the fact that Boston has had snow for longer than it’s been a city, does the snow disrupt aboveground green line service every year? Yes. The downtown green line stops are pretty close together so if you’re okay with walking, you don’t *need* to take too many trains around there. And the classic/historic/touristy downtown stuff is pretty walkable also, and close to transit options. The B/C/D/E green lines are quite slow, and D is fond of perpetually being under construction, but sometimes that’s inevitable.
The red line goes to some useful or fun places, it either works pretty well or not well at all. South station is useful and has silver line connections including to the airport. (The silver line is a bus pretending to be a good replacement for a removed train line.. long story.) North station is not as useful imo and no, you can’t go directly from north to south station. 🙃 The blue line is a bit irritating to connect to but it does go to a nice salt marsh.
Buses... they are present. They.. work, though not always on their intended schedules. The only buses that have never betrayed me are the 39 and the 86. There are many parts of the city the trains don’t reach, so it’s very good to know the buses, and sometimes their routes are more direct than trains, which are on more of a spoke model. Also they’re cheaper than trains. I’ve commuted by bus and train and it’s all doable, just give yourself spare time.
Anyway this is far too long but I feel strongly about buses and trains and I think they’re a good way to get to know a place. I took every train to each end of their respective lines, just to see what was there (mostly parking lots tbh). Long story short Boston transit has many irritating quirks but it does more or less work, and also apparently I miss it

BASKETS FOR A CAUSE
THE TWO OF CUPS. The card that represents that of joyful connection and cooperation. And what a fitting card it is for this spring charity auction where supernaturals far and wide are coming together to meet new people, create new friendships and give back to a great cause.
Spring is in the air and supernaturals across the city are gathering together in Central Park, which has been closed off for a private event where spring activities will be hosted throughout the park and baskets will be auctioned off to the highest bidder. The NYC coven has casted a non-audiunt spell across the park soundproofing the event from humans potentially passing by, a handful of seraphs have volunteered to act as security (although it is completely optional for seraphs to volunteer or just enjoy the event as any other guest may), and all of the proceeds raised throughout the day will go towards the NYC hospitals specializing in supernatural care and blood banks around the city. So get those baskets ready and those daylight rings on to enjoy a fun and festive day out in the sun.
REMINDERS
In game, this event will take place over Saturday, May 8th. Feel free to post starters and threads now reacting to any of the below activities. While OOC, the list of baskets will be posted later today on the 7th.
For the Basket Bidding, if your character’s basket was selected for the auction, that specific character will not be allowed to bid on any other basket seeing that they will already be participating themselves (we will be reaching out later today to let everyone who submitted baskets know which characters of theirs were selected/will be out of the bidding wars).
If your character did not submit a basket, it will be your turn to bid. You will send in your bids via messages or asks to the main with the number of the basket your character is bidding on and the amount they are bidding on (more details to come later today). These bids are meant to be anonymous so please make sure you are sending the bids to the main and not posting them in the discord chat or in the notes of any of these event posts.
Bids will be updated in real time (aka whenever an admin is on), so make sure to keep your eyes on the main!
Once the bidding has been closed, it will be revealed who has won which baskets. Once there is a winner of each basket, the identities of the bidders and the bids will be revealed. The event at that point will be over and you and the other player can plot together to decide when to cash in on these outings.
This event is a fun way to get everyone interacting, so we hope you enjoy it and in the meantime, before the baskets are posted, have your characters interact to any of the below-

I'm so glad you had a good time!! if you can be bothered please give all the thoughts and descriptions!
Please you know I’ll take any opportunity to hear myself talk of course I’ll share my post-show thoughts lol
First Blood Orange was a great opener and I was rly happy the crowd was engaged with the set. They did Best To You and I died and went to heaven. The new stuff sounded so good too. If you’d like evidence of how much I enjoyed it you can head to Elin’s insta and spot me living my best life during the set 😂
The pre-show playlist was so weird but funny. C’est La Vie? Hilarious. Hope he does spice girls at one of my next shows.
It was absolutely one of the more electric harry shows I’ve experienced at MSG so far. The energy was just massive when he first came out and never rly quit. The kiwi bounce was truly Bouncin.
It’s such a bizarre, wonderful feeling to be confronted with Harry’s corporeal form and remember he is real bc he’s standing directly in front of you.
Speaking of which, he was great. Sounded great. Obviously. So entertaining. Ever the master of connecting with the entire room. He didn’t do any chatty crowd interaction idk if there were just uninspired signs (probably) or he was too excited about the golf dad cam to focus on anything else lol but starting it off with the tongue burned soup bit was classic harry charm offensive as was his reaction to forgetting the lyrics to MFASR.
The stage is fucking massive and he rly works it so every side gets a lot of face time.
Wonderful music direction once again by Pauli the god and the band was impeccable as ever
I was curious about Daydreaming as an opener bc I thought MFASR worked perfect but it rly set the mood. Also if moving MFASR further into the set allows us to get it with live horns I’d accept him starting with literally anything bc OMG THE BRASS. What a great addition to the tour. As a former saxophonist, i appreciated its addition as well and I hope he leans into the sax on future music. I kinda wanna hear keep driving with 80s sax now lol
Satellite live was transcendent idk what to say about it other than that my neck hurts today from going too hard during satellite 😂 a real standout.
Honestly the entire run of Satellite, Cinema, MFASR, TPWK, WMYB and LNT was out of this world. I’ve never danced so much at a harry show. I was so exhausted by the time we got to WS I I think I mentally and physically checked out for that entire song lol barely noticed it was happening until midway through
The encore was perfect. No notes, wonderful song choices. Basically jumped through half of medicine and kiwi and I was dead by the end of it.
As for my set list thoughts, I would personally make some changes if I were in Harry and Pauli’s shoes.
Hot take: Golden’s gotta go! I love Golden but I’ve never thought its greatness translated well live. He 100% should switch it out for Lights Up. It is still shocking to me he let LU go. Just doesn’t make sense sorry!!!
It’s well established I don’t like Little Freak but I will say I get it’s inclusion in that it’s an obvious sing a long crowd pleaser. The chorus is v beautiful live and it def sounded much better than the NYC ONO recording. It still wouldn’t make my set list but I get the decision. Kinda sad I didn’t experience boyfriends live vocals but I know I’m probs in the minority in that lol
The sequencing in general feels off to me. I wonder if they got rid of Golden, moved Adore you to #2 and Daylight after, and then added Lights Up somewhere in that first third before Matilda if it would flow better.
LOML isn’t ideal as the final pre encore song. Like I get it in that it’s a sing along anthemic song but I’d prefer something with a little more emotional resonance for me in that spot. A bit more energy esp since he picks back up with SOTT. Honestly I think Lights Up could work there too with that great arrangement Pauli had for it last tour and those big ass drums at the end to give a sense of (fake) finality. Oh are my Lights Up stan colors coming through again oops

Okay....
So was discussing in DMs and wanted to expand on some clarified shit in retrospect on Cole’s first Met Gala appearance, prompted by his own comments and some other subsequent behavior....that now makes some shit that didn’t add up then, crystal clear:
Cole commented he was super nervous the first time----understandable AND.....on top of everything else, he was having to doubtlessly reassure and comfort that spiraling mess he used to date, cuz if HE was nervous, I’m sure SHE was an utter basket case.
Granted, it went off (very, very) well for them....butttt.....they also ditched the after parties early for PP, which, while I’m sure they wanted to have sexytimes, etc----I’m also sure, as that became a pattern for PP at big events, always whining and getting Cole to agree to ditch early to reassure her, etc (versus networking and making use of them) I’m sure it wore verryyyy thin.
Plus, ironically, ONLY when it was big events WITH Cole....she was moar than capable of staying out all evening and even shutting things down when she attended shit without him, especially when with a sidepiece/current crush obsession.
Returning to the 2018 Met, I had a troll claim they were seen having a fight in the street.....I doubt it was quite that public.....but I also could, in retrospect buy that...
We also then had her triumph quickly replaced with the classic let down after depression.....which manifested itself in her immediately flying to see her family in NC.....something that certainly could’ve waited a day or two, since Cole remained in NYC to see his friends (that she’d continue to avoid for another year) and was then off to begin filming....so he’d be gone for a month and she had nothing scheduled to do anyway.
Even then, it seemed weird....I remember I thought he was even going to join them, but....noooppppeee....
And consider, they’d been together for TWO YEARS at this point. Yet she avoided (still) meeting his friends, ditched him early for her family (while having nothing else happening) and looked for ways to control shit.
She only visited him in NOLA once----for a weekend and that was just after Rodent had publicly stalked him, leaving PP feeling threatened.....AND turns out she’d fucked FB in her college dorm apartment, just before catching the flight to see Cole....(and we’d later see her being completely awful to Cole, with FB, at Comicon....
Now compare this all to:
A young woman who met, engaged, etc ALL Cole’s closest friends within months, ditto her family (and includes him in deeply private family events and interactions), attends all his events that she can (as he does for her, as well) and went to NYC expressly to attend after parties with him----and seems to require no coddling over it all, etc...
And doesn’t fuck around on him

babe I'm scared of what contents johnny might release from NY. like *genuinely* scared. this man may not sing much but his contents always the best among neos. what if he suddenly collab with jbiebs
this is so funny like i’m guessing jb is in new york for the met gala right? they should meet up and collab on a track that would be devastating for the neos they would be screaming crying throwing up. ok but i’m DYING to know what he’s doing that made him fly all the way out to nyc. i know all of neocity is joking that he’s going to the gala but i actually do think it’s not totally out of the realm of possibilities that a company could have flown him out to be one of those interviewers who talks to the guests on the red carpet. anna wintour might have had to approve him then which makes me scream lol. i mean obviously we’ll get some vlogs but i’ve been thinking of other reasons for why he’s hear and only thing i can think of is a feature on a non-bieber song with one of his classic cheesy english lines or maybe some kind collab with a clothing brand or a small acting role? i guess we’ll find out about the met gala theory on monday and if it’s true then we better get a jb interaction or else

The Documentary Hallelujah: Leonard Cohen, A Journey, A Song Celebrates The Late Singer/Songwriter’s Poetic Hit
I’ll admit it. It wasn’t until the 82-year-old Leonard Cohen had died in 2016 (November 7th) did I really start paying attention to the fantastic quality of his music and lyrics. There were songs and albums that I acknowledged but, somehow, I didn’t quite get the body and breadth of this Canadian Jewish poet. The richness of his songs and the substance of his lyrics hadn’t fully caught my attention until after his death.
I never made it to a concert nor had an opportunity to interview him. I only encountered him tangentially. There was an interactive exhibit dedicated to Cohen’s life and career which opened on November 9, 2017, at Montreal's contemporary art museum (MAC) entitled "Leonard Cohen: Une Brèche en Toute Chose/A Crack in Everything.” The exhibit had been in the works for several years prior to the Montreal born artist’s death, part of the official program of Montreal's 375th anniversary. It broke museum's attendance records in its five-month run. Then it embarked on an international tour, opening in New York City at the Jewish Museum in April 2019 — and I saw it shortly before it left NYC spending hours there.
Thanks to guitarist/sound stylist Gary Lucas, I came to understand Cohen’s impact on other musicians. Lucas often spoke of the late Jeff Buckley —his former collaborator and one-time band mate. They worked on some songs together that appeared on Grace, Buckley’s one full studio-produced release. And the singer/songwriter really got established posthumously through a powerful and touching rendition of “Hallelujah,” Cohen’s most enduring song.
I had listened to Buckley’s version numerous times and, though I appreciated his heartfelt rendition, I didn't realize the huge back story to that song. Originally released on Various Positions — Cohen’s 1984 album — “Hallelujah” achieved little initial success. Then it developed a growing audience after achieving popular and critical acclaim through a version recorded by former Velvet Underground founder John Cale in 1991 for I'm Your Fan, a Cohen tribute album. That inspired Buckley to record his version of Cale's take in 1994.
I knew of author Alan Light’s 2012 book, The Holy Or the Broken: Leonard Cohen, Jeff Buckley, and the Unlikely Ascent of ‘Hallelujah.’ But it wasn’t until I recently saw ‘Hallelujah:’ Leonard Cohen, A Journey, A Song at the Walter Reade Theater (part of Film at Lincoln Center), that I came to understand what I’d been missing. Building on Light’s book, the feature doc spotlights Cohen in a way that offers a perspective on an artist who in many ways was as creatively significant as Nobel Prize winner Bob Dylan (who did a live version of the song himself and was friends with Cohen). As Light said somewhere, Cohen's "approach to language and craft felt unlike the work of anybody else. The sound was rooted in poetry and literature because he studied as a poet and a novelist first."
Cohen kept changing the song, eventually crafting as many as 180 possible verses to choose from, recorded several iterations (some more sexually suggestive than others) and performed variations of it live. After an edited version of Cale’s take was featured in the 2001 film Shrek, it landed on the multi-platinum-selling soundtrack release. Many other arrangements of “Hallelujah” have been performed in recordings and in concert, with over 300 versions known. The song has since been used in other film and television soundtracks and televised talent contests such as American Idol. Following Cohen's death in November 2016, “Hallelujah” enjoyed renewed interest. It appeared on many international singles charts and entered the American Billboard Hot 100 for the first time.
But the film — directed by Daniel Geller and Dayna Goldfire — is much more than simply detailing the evolution of the song and Various Positions — the album it first appeared on. Cohen’s seventh studio album was released in December 1984 (and February 1985) and marked not only his turn to a more modern sound with synthesizers, but also featured Jennifer Warnes’ harmonies and backing vocals — she’s credited equally to Cohen as vocalist on all of the tracks.
Produced by John Lissauer, the album was a glistening display of Cohen at his basic best after having done 1977's Death of a Ladies' Man, an over-produced recording with Phil Spector (Mr. Wall of Sound). Although it featured a more contemporary approach compared with the singer's previous LPs, Columbia President Walter Yetnikoff didn’t think it was commercial enough and refused to release it in the States. That stuck in Cohen’s craw and affected his work for a long time.
All of this and much more is effectively detailed in the film. Interviews with those who knew him well such as Judy Collins (who popularized him through her 1966 cover of “Suzanne”) pop music chronicler Larry “Ratso” Sloman, Lissauer and others help establish who Cohen was and what informed his work such as his observant Jewish roots and the many women he had been with.
Said one of the film's co-creators in an interview, “Cohen addressed the deepest of our human concerns about longing for connection and some sort of hope, transcendence and acknowledgment of the difficulties of life."
As docs go, this one really does the job. While focused on the song as a doorway into who Cohen was, it sets us up for a fully realized story about an important creator.

Drag is for adults. It does not belong in schools
New York is showering taxpayer funds on a group that sends drag queens into city schools — often without parental knowledge or consent — even as parents in other states protest increasingly aggressive efforts to expose kids to gender-bending performers.
Last month alone, Drag Story Hour NYC — a nonprofit whose outrageously cross-dressed performers interact with kids as young as 3 — earned $46,000 from city contracts for appearances at public schools, street festivals, and libraries, city records show.
Since January, the group has organized 49 drag programs in 34 public elementary, middle, and high schools, it boasted on its website, with appearances in all five boroughs.
“I can’t believe this. I am shocked,” said public school mom and state Assembly candidate Helen Qiu, whose 11-year-old son attends a Manhattan middle school. “I would be furious if he was exposed without my consent. This is not part of the curriculum.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Since 2018, the group — previously known as Drag Queen Story Hour NYC, before changing its name early this year — has received a total of $207,000 in taxpayer cash.
The tally includes $50,000 from New York State through its Council on the Arts, along with $157,000 from the city’s Departments of Education, Cultural Affairs, Youth and Community Development, and even the Department of Transportation, city data shows.
“I am considering pulling funding to any school in my district that is implementing Drag Queen Story Hour,” said City Council member Vickie Paladino (R-Queens). “We are taking hundreds of thousands of dollars out of the pockets of hardworking New York taxpayers … to fund a program teaching little children about their gender fluidity? Not. On. My. Watch.”
Tumblr media
Most of the money was allocated by city council members from their discretionary budgets, who set aside $80,000 for the group in the current fiscal year — more than tripling the $25,000 earmarked in 2020.
Drag queen story hours for children have been featured at public library branches throughout the city since 2017, with upcoming events scheduled at Manhattan’s Epiphany Library and the Woodside Public Library in Queens, among others.
Tumblr media
Cross-dressed performers typically read aloud from a list of books that teach acceptance and inclusion, including children’s classics like “Where the Wild Things Are” and “The Rainbow Fish” — and some that overtly celebrate gender fluidity, like “The Hips on the Drag Queen Go Swish, Swish, Swish.”
But the expansion into city schools has brought new features to the program, its social media posts reveal.
In April, the elaborately coiffed Harmonica Sunbeam wore a slinky gown to meet with kindergarteners at STAR Academy in Manhattan and color pages from “The Dragtivity Book,” which encourages kids to choose their pronouns and invent drag names.
Tumblr media
Bella Noche wore a scanty mermaid-like bra getup to travel with 2nd graders from Manhattan’s PS 34 on a May field trip, and Flame taught middle schoolers “of all genders” how to apply drag eye makeup at MS 88 in Park Slope.
Some of the school-related posts disappeared from the Internet Friday, less than an hour after The Post called Drag Story Hour NYC for comment.
In one deleted photo, a performer known as Professor Lionel Longlegs wore a t-shirt emblazoned with the message “I Don’t Want to Look or Be Cis” before an audience of primary-grade kids in the library of PS 191 on the Upper West Side.
Some city parents welcomed the idea of drag-queen visits to school.
“I’m glad to see all types of people included in what students are exposed to and learn in class,” said Kristen Williams, 40, whose 11-year-old daughter attends an East Village middle school.
But Storm Neverson, 26, had reservations about her 9- and 6-year-old girls’ exposure to the program at STAR Academy.
“If they were in junior high school or middle school, I would be okay with that because I feel like they would have a little bit more understanding,” Neverson said. “At this time, the kids were just a little too young.”
STAR Academy parents were told of the in-school drag session ahead of time, Neverson said — but could not opt their kids out of it.
“It was mostly just like a heads up, you know, like, ’Hey, this event is coming up. We’re gonna have these people come in.’ And that was that,” she said.
But at other schools, parents had no idea.
“I didn’t get any notice,” complained Reese Harrington, a parent at PS 191. “My daughter actually came home and told me that a drag queen came to the school … I feel like it would have been better for that conversation to happen at home.”
Last week, angry Texas parents protested outside a “Drag the Kids to Pride” event — billed as “a family friendly drag show” — at a North Dallas gay bar called Mister Misster, where children tipped drag queens with dollar bills as they shimmied and sashayed.
The “Libs of TikTok” Twitter account was banned Thursday for posting a series of tweets spotlighting additional drag shows for kids.
Dr. Elana Fishbein, founder and president of the conservative group No Left Turn in Education, slammed the city’s in-school drag appearances as “a flagrant disregard for the real needs of the students.”
“Exposing children to drag queens in school is none other than an abuse of authority for the purpose of sexualizing children,” Fishbein said.
The DOE did not respond specifically to questions about parental notification, and refused to say whether the drag queens must pass background checks — but defended the program as “life saving.”
“Last year, 50 transgender or gender-nonconforming people were killed in the United States due to their identity,” spokeswoman Suzan Sumer said. “We believe our schools play a critical role in helping young people learn about and respect people who may be different from them.”
