AOT OC Show and Tell Days - Day 1: basic introductions
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Name: Evelyn Marianne Auroré
Gender: Female
Age in setting: not thought out yet since I'm contemplating if to age up the characters for the storyline actually considering I'm finally laying it out (most likely yes) but I'm not sure on how many years. 🤧
Suggestions welcome 😵‍💫
Bold all of the following that apply to your OC!
Context: Canon Setting | Modern AU | Other AU
What niche does your OC serve for you?:
Self-insert | Completely original character | Self-shipping (in the projecting sense xD) | Roleplaying | Writing fics | Creating art | Only the scenarios and adventures that I imagine inside my head and share with no one! get fucked I ain't creating shit | Something else
A Bit More:
If your character is in the AOT canon setting, what's their allegiance?
Survey Corps | Military Police | Marleyan | Warriors | etc.
Do you ship your character with a canon character? If so, who?
She understands my Reiner love almost better than I do oml 🤧🤧🤧
Do you have any cute art or picrews of them together? Let's see one:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Not pictured is a light brushing with a surprising delicacy of her bangs to the side as he bends a bit to kiss her tenderly on the forehead no I totally didn't come up with this while typing wdym 🤭🤧(◡ ω ◡)✨✨✨
Obligatory fake screencap to give her a clearer image in my head for the scenarios since my choice to redesign her came during lasting artblock aofjakkfkakf
I'm planning to make another one for WIT's style based on something I'll mention later in the post!😆😆
Tumblr media
For most part here's a rought draft . But also considering her design is for s4 I might create a special pre-timeskip look for that since it's set there.
Character Creation:
How long have you actively been developing your OC?:
As an Aot oc? March 2022. As an overall character? … took a good while since August 2019, jumped between… *counts fingers* 5 different fanbases, nothing came of any of these, all her ships were one dimensional unconvincing shallow and dull. Yet when I tried here, a wave of inspiration hit me like a comet D: 💫
Her hair was fucking blue aodjqidjakdjajkw
Is there any significance behind your OCs name?:
Glad you asked! :D I have this reaching and overextensive research for the meaning & how it ties to the whole character story&arc
Evelyn (driven from Eve,if I added the meta behind this it'd reach the tumblr word limit if there is any) : desired (ahhh ahaah…(〒﹏〒). Also has some fairytale motif not as deep but alfjakdka.) , life (self explanatory :"). )
Marianne: (driven from Maria, also actually what my own name & my 2nd favourite oc's name is driven from🤭)- star, grace. I mostly only added it after making her an aot oc, but a middle name would be a fancy addition right? :D😆😆
Auroré - driven from aurora meaning dawn(& familial ties with another oc of mine themed after Northern lights).
Plus.... fitting for her hair color.! :D
Combine her first and last name and it's sounding like: life's (graceful) dawn.
Which has a coincidental similarly to the last episode of s4 part 2 (the dawn of humanity)
If your OCs appearance is based on yours, do they have any different features?:
No not really, I just unironically want this look and think it's gorgeous. Blood-red hair and everything (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*.✧
Is there anything you want to try doing with your OC that you haven't yet? (ex RPing, art, fics, etc):
I'm actually finally writing the full first meeting oneshot nowadays! As of now it was just brain-dump scenarios connecting (somehow that alone ended up being 2k wth) xD. I've also been more openly brainstorming about it so I'm opening up to questions!:D
Also on an art note, I actually kept on the side a DIY nendoroid figure I'm planning to turn into her 😆😆😆
For him <3

scenegraph reviews: smp kit makes pose roll.exe (part 2: size comparisons/etc)
(part one is thisaway)
Tumblr media
helter skelter
needless to say, gluing down the antennae really helped her out.  she still does not pass the Sit Test.  it should be possible, but her waist really doesn’t like it and will pop loose while i’m trying to adjust the pose.  however, she does get the Tony Hawk Pro Skater Seal of Approval.
Tumblr media
i never took a picture of it because lol lmao she balances perfectly well with the antennae fix she doesn’t need it unless you want to pose her using floatshoes, but she does come with a nicely themed stand, which plugs into her button!  so it’s both pretty unnoticeable when it’s not in and hey, cool, she has a stand.  good thinkin’ there.
aaaand some size comparisons, so you can see how she’ll fit in with other figures!  L-R: picco neemo S, figma mumi, smp roll, kotobukiya classic roll
Tumblr media
(at this point, i forgot that the reason kotobukiya classic roll is consigned to the tchochke shelf instead of hanging out with the other figures is that she loves to fall apart without warning.  really, really loves it.  i’ve gotten so spoiled by megami device kaede, when nearly a decade separates the two sculpts lmao)
Tumblr media
aaaanyway.  L-R: hairdorable, nendoroid, smp roll, calico critter/sylvanian family older sister
Tumblr media
now that she’s together and my thumbs have recovered, i am super happy that i have this lil roll!  she’s everything i needed to tide me over until kotobukiya roll.exe returns from prototype purgatory, and at such a small size it’ll be easy to display future navis in the series should people buy this first set.
i fully expect series two to be half taken up by the insanely conspicuously absent usual suspects of blooz and fort.  but at the same time, their being missing here (in favor of gutsman and fireman!  this is really an exe episode 8 collection, not a bn1 collection!) really tells me that bandai has more plans for this series?  and that is good, because there are a lot of navi designs i love that i would be incredibly happy to have a smol, posable representation of.  like elecman!  and toadman!  and aquaman!  and medi!  and RING PLEASE CAN WE GET THAT FAR
i know i just got done outlining how these things are a bit of a pain to get together and you shouldn’t pay scalper prices for ‘em considering the unadvertised work and unincluded tools you’ll need to be ready to utilize, but IF THEY DO REAL WELL THINK OF THE NAVI DESIGNS WE COULD GET WHO AIN’T NEVER HAD A FIGURE BEFORE

The answer is probably obvious given your username but who is your favorite twst character? ❤ Guess I am more asking what you love about Riddle lol
haha, well, i will say that riddle is practically tied with idia as my favorite! idia was a character who i literally decided was my fave at first sight, but then i came to love riddle more and more while i was playing through the story for the first time. the idiashroud url is taken by someone who isn't even using it😔 and this url was, shockingly, not taken when i first got into twst, so i took it the second i found out it was available. but, yeah, i do love riddle a lot!! i've got two plushies of him and two other pieces of adorable fanmade merch i'll share below, and i'd love to get some more riddle merch. i especially really wanna buy his nendoroid when i'm able to afford it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
^ the aforementioned riddle merch plus some other random things i have on a little corkboard in my room, lol.
as for what i love about him... honestly, what drew me to him when i first started twst was that i just thought he was hilarious. one of the first vignettes i ever read was the one where he and floyd are in the library and he gets really pissed about floyd teasing him and making fun of his height. and, well, one of my favorite fictional characters of all time just happens to be another short little nerd with a red color scheme and a hot temper who would have to be held back from kicking my ass if he knew i was calling him a short little nerd (it's edward elric from fullmetal alchemist, lol). so i got attached to him based on that and also because i thought the way he acted during book 1 was just really funny and entertaining to watch. i also figured there must be some sort of Reason behind it that i couldn't wait to find out, and then the reason we got really tugged at my heartstrings and, again, reminded me of some of my favorite characters in other media.
beyond that, i really love his design, for one thing. especially his heart-shaped ahoge which has got to be one of the cutest character design choices i've ever seen in my life. i love that he's an animal lover who goes out of his way to check on the hedgehogs even when he doesn't have to, and how excited he gets about discovering the joys of puzzle solving in the endless halloween event. i love how protective he is of his dormmates and how much faith he shows in them after book 1. like, he has such sweet interactions with ace in fairy gala remix and with deuce in glorious masquerade. and i love the development he goes through!! i made a post on this a while back, but riddle along with vil is one of the only overblotters who really apologized and took immediate steps to make up for what he'd done, which shows a lot of genuine maturity and responsibility on his part. there's also a chapter of the twst anthology manga where he's really anxious and frustrated with himself for still instinctively getting so angry at rule violations, and ace ultimately convinces him that he doesn't have to be so hard on himself and helps him relax. i love that. i love that he's still struggling with unlearning what he was taught all his life, because recovery and growth aren't always linear, but he's trying the best that he can now that he knows he was wrong.
so yeah this got longer than i originally planned lol but basically i just think riddle is really cute and funny and has a great character arc. to end this off here's an image of two riddle plushies i wish i had because i absolutely adore this style.

2020 year in review
It’s funny, last year I never actually got around to doing one of these. I didn’t think it was overly interesting. Oh 2019, how I miss you so 😭Such an innocent time ....
I’ll do a quick recap, cause hey no-one but me reads these anyway. 2019 was a glorious time. I went to Italy for the first time, went on an awesome Hunter Valley trip with my friends, had a 100th birthday celebration for my pop, I got to see the show I worked on air on TV, we saw the Lano and Woodley apartment in Melbourne .... Good times!
I didn’t give a rats about being unemployed and took matters into my own hands by making loads of new merch and selling at the most conventions I’ve ever been to. I tabled at Sydney Supanova, Adelaide Avcon, Sydney SMASH, Coffs Nexus Con, Sydney Oz Comic Con and Brisbane Supanova! I did so much travelling and events, it became my full time job. It was exhausting, but it was loads of fun, it paid the bills nicely, and it was wonderful to meet followers and mutuals in person.
My partner was very invested in counting up the numbers of what was selling and what wasn’t, and taking note of what was inconvenient with my setup and how to make it better. He even made a powerpoint presentation on what I could focus on for 2020, what kind of merch I could focus on and adding more conventions to my list. We were both excited about the idea of trying out Armageddon in New Zealand, which would have been my first overseas convention!
Cue 2020.
Tumblr media
It started off uneasy. There were still bushfires everywhere and smoke hanging around, but I was optimistic they would die soon and the rest of the year would be fine. I booked a bunch of conventions early as usual. Got a whole bunch of new things made and ordered for the first convention of the year, Melbourne Supanova in early April. Some Acrylic charms didn’t make it in time because of COVID, but I thought that’s ok I still have a whole years worth of conventions to sell them at!
COVID-19 was just a spooky mysterious thing that was happening overseas at that point. I think there might have been 1 case in Australia, so all the toilet paper and hand sanitizer was sold out, but we were still able to do our usual travelling for the event. Little did I know, Melbourne Supanova was the first and last event I could do in 2020.
COVID hit Australia hard, Melbourne especially. There were lockdowns, quarantines, planes were grounded, airmail was halted, the cases kept multiplying, rules kept changing and changing and it was all so new and such a headache. Seeing every single convention I had booked cancel one after the other was hard to process. This was my main source of income in 2019 and now it’s up and vanished. Everyone were losing their jobs too, so the idea of getting a new job was completely out the window.
I tried to cheer myself up by drawing ‘Toilet Paper Chan’, my new magical girl character who has the ability to summon toilet paper in a time of need 😅
Tumblr media
I made it into a Draw This In Your Style challenge, seeing as everyone was bored out of their minds in quarantine I hoped it was something people could pass the time and have fun making.
Tumblr media
(here’s a handful of my favourites) I had a few entries which were all very adorable, but I admit not as many people joined as I expected. I don’t blame them though, this whole pandemic was very soul sucking and demotivating, especially hearing the constant stream of bad news when it all started.
I also made some lineart of a cute Easter girl, encouraging people to colour her in if they are bored in quarantine.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That was really fun, and I planned to do more, perhaps whole colouring books for a small price to download.
Then, out of nowhere, my friend from the last animation studio I worked at in 2018 contacted me. “Hey Tess, are you looking for work?”
“Um .... yes?”
Work? In 2020? What?
It turns out the animation industry is one of the only industries that are doing fine in the pandemic. Literally the only change is that animators have to work from home instead of at a studio. If you have the animation software and an internet connection you have everything you need.
Tumblr media
So my good friend had recently scored this job for a studio which outsources all their animation for their animated TV series. The role is just fixing up any animation errors inhouse to minimize the amount of back-and-fourth between studios. It doesn’t sound like much but it became too big a job for just one dude to handle, so he contacted me and 2 of my other animation friends to help out. We had a ball!
It was loads of fun, and the contract lasted the whole year!
Tumblr media
It wasn’t just fixing up errors either, I got to animate walking/ running / jumping / flying cycles for the overseas animators to use, which was great practice for me, and we even had a whole episode to ourselves to animate from scratch which I really enjoyed.
And then ... the year just flew by, because I was busy working the whole time. It was really quite surreal!
There were a few highlights, such as being a bridesmaid for my best friend’s wedding and organising her hens party, which is one of those once-in-a-lifetime things.
Tumblr media
(Hens Party - it was yellow themed (her favourite colour) and High Tea.. it was adorable!)
Tumblr media
(The bridesmaids and the bride on the Wedding Day)
Unfortunately there were some lowlights too ... This was the last year I got to see my aunt.
She was the craziest, funniest aunt, and still far too young to go. I honestly don’t think I’ll ever be the same without her.
As always, drawing is the only way I cope with anything. My family chose a plain wooden casket, encouraging everybody to write a message or draw something on it, before it would be sent to the crematorium. I drew Spotty, her awesome horse I remember from my childhood, surrounded by her favourite flowers. Monty draw Mingus, her awesome ferret we also remember from our childhood.
Tumblr media
That wasn’t the only bad news either. Pat’s Grandpa passed away later in the year, and a handful of my friends had relatives who either passed away or were diagnosed with cancer or some other horrible life threatening disease. A musician who collaborated with favourite artist collaborated passed as well, and even though I didn’t know him personally, it was still horribly devastating. Not to mention all my friends/relatives pets who didn’t make it through 2020. There was just so much loss this year, and I’m still grieving my cousin and my friend’s mum who both passed last year, it’s getting harder and harder to cope. It’s gotten to the point where I’m paranoid about who the next person will be because I haven’t finished grieving the last ...
All I can say is I hope 2021 is a little kinder when it comes to my loved ones. The small light at the end of the tunnel is; any suicidal thoughts I used to have frequently have all completely vanished, because I’ve been faced with the reality of it all. You really don’t realise how many people love you, people you don’t even know.
...
That was very dark, but it’s definitely something I needed to get off my chest.
Lets go back to a much lighter note.
More highlights:
🌻Animal Crossing New Horizons came out this year! I used to play Wild World back in the day so it was wonderfully nostalgic, and me and Pat have made the cutest little town with all our favourite villagers. It’s a nice way to escape from it all ^_^
Tumblr media
(Monty’s island when we started)
🌻Speaking of games, the brand new Crash Bandicoot came out this year too! It was actually jaw droppingly amazing seeing all the awesome new ideas and mechanics they came up with while still keeping it classicly Crash. I loved it and I’m so excited to see if they give Spyro the same treatment!
Tumblr media
🌻2020 brought about new and interesting ways to still enjoy Live entertainment. Lano and Woodley did a Zoom show which was absolutely hilarious, and Lights did an amazing online Dead End show which had me so pumped!
Tumblr media
🌻Pat and I continued our anniversary High Tea tradition, this time trying it out at the Hydro Majestic hotel in the Blue Mountains!
Tumblr media
🌻Speaking of Pat, his sister got married this year too, despite the pandemic. Congratulations!
🌻Pat randomly bought a Miku figure for himself, out of the blue, completely unravelling years of unnecessary ‘shame’ I’ve inherited caused by a pushy mother and a crappy ex. I used to love figure collecting but was convinced by certain judgy people that it was stupid and I needed to sell them all. I kept my very favourites in a cupboard ‘just incase they increase in value’. But now I can finally display them all again knowing Pat loves them just as much as I do!
We also added a ton more to the collection to make up for lost time (and because there’s SO MANY CUTE MIKUS NOWADAYS)
Tumblr media
It’s a bit messy because we recently got new ones and need to make more space for them. The shelf with the Vocaloid nendoroids were my original ones hidden away in the cupboard, the rest we got this year ^_^ They make me so happy!
🌻Speaking of Pat unlocking things I’ve always wanted to do in the past: I am now planning to revive my old OCs Yui and Lotto! They were just characters of mine back in the day, but since I’m not good writing I never really came up with a story for them. But with Pat’s writer wisdom and my kawaii art style, I’m now planning a webcomic featuring the two cuties ^_^ It’s still in the very early planning stages but I’m super excited, and forever grateful for Pat, for believing in me ;w;
Tumblr media
🌻This year I drew 31 more Owl City songs in copic markers, to go towards my ongoing project to draw every song! I’m actually getting quite close to my goal now which is exciting!
Tumblr media
🌻This year I went to a Drive-In movie theatre for the first time to see the new Bill and Tedd movie, it was glorious and now I wanted to try more drive-ins. Going out to see a movie on a big screen *without* being able to hear smart-asses or screaming babies? Yes please!!
🌻How could I forget, this was the year my idol noticed me!! Lights shared and retweeted my Deadend fanart! Life = made.
Tumblr media
What to to look forward to in 2021:
This is the first New Year where I actually have an idea of how 2021 will go! I managed to secure another animation job at a new studio starting January, ending January 2022 😊So thats the financial security for this year sorted! :P
As for general goals for 2021;
I’m hoping to have a decent plan, concept art, chapter ideas and hopefully even a script done for my new webcomic! I also wanted to make some cute simple animations of the characters just because c:
I’d also like to just do more of my own animation in general ... I animate every day for work but I never get to do my own animated projects. It will be hard with a full time job, so maybe this can be a 2022 goal ... but hopefully I can do at least one little animation of my own!
I suppose another goal is to make a social media accounts for my animation, too. Even if I don’t fulfil my goal, I still would like a page to showcase everything I’ve done so far.
And if all else fails .... Another goal is to draw more Miku. It’s crazy that I love her this much and haven’t drawn any fanart!
I think I’ll leave it there because I’m babbling now. 😅
I’ve done so many of these now o_o

Rezo’s Hair 2: Mold and Cast
This is my first time with a silicone mold and working with ‘liquid plastic’.
I am using Smooth-On’s Mold Star 15 for molds and Smooth Cast 305 for resin/ liquid plastic.
Here’s how the silicone mold went down!
It was really hard to decide how to orient the piece!  Eventually I chose based on the way gravity would affect the resin pour (and thus where the pour spout would be). I also anticipate a resin seam so I tried to have it end up where it’ll be easy to sand out.
I made a mold box out of Lego (Duplo) blocks and used Play-Doh to mask out the first section. There is an excellent video tutorial on Facebook in the Nendoroid Customs and Mods group by Emily Gomes that I followed for this, so I’m not going into great detail about the process here. In short, press the dough into the bottom and submerge the original part-way so that you can create the silicone mold one half at a time.
The Play-Doh was a bit dried out so I practiced a few times.
Tumblr media
I mixed in some water to make it easier to work with. More on that later, but here’s the try I kept for my mold.
Tumblr media
The clay cone at the top there will leave a space for me to pour resin. The toothpick is an air channel, so air can escape during the pour and help prevent bubbles.  I tried to set them at the crests of the hair because I imagine that will be the place bubbles are likely to be caught. The acorn nuts are registration shapes so the mold will sit together correctly after you’ve taken the original out and are pouring resin.
Tumblr media
Here are holes I made as additional registration marks.  These didn’t really work out, but more on that later.
Here’s what it looked like when I poured the silicone.
Tumblr media
What the...!  I’ll bet you can guess what that thing is. ^^;
Tumblr media
Yeah, it’s my air vent toothpick. It’s okay; I can just cut a new air vent after the silicone cures.
Does the silicone look kind of marbley to you guys?  It did to me. I was pretty sure for four hours as I waited for it to cure that I’d not mixed it enough and I’d come back to a gloppy mess.
Anyway, I waited faithfully and here’s what it looked like after curing time.
Tumblr media
There are lots of tiny surface bubbles. There’s no going back to do it better, so I might as well move forward!
Tumblr media
It seems to be holding up alright as I remove a row o Legos, and there wasn’t a ton of leakage even though there are spaces between my blocks. But I want to keep my box intact for the next pour, so I leave the rest attached.  All the guides say to unbox here and re-box later, but I might as well experiment and see what happens when you don’t because I can’t really riddle out why you shouldn’t.
Here’s the bottom, after removing the Legos there.
Tumblr media
The clay has to come out.
Tumblr media
It was pretty easy to lift out, and there’s not too much clean up to do. But, you have to clean it up and take out the acorn nuts so the next pour will fill them in and make the inverted side of the registration marks.  Leave the pour spout though!
Tumblr media
It’s clean and ready for the next pour.  Almost.  I add mold release spray, brush it in, let it dry, and then do another coat.
Tumblr media
You can’t really see anything, except that it looks a little wet. I’m not sure you needed to see this picture but I took it so here it is.
Even though it seems to have set fine, I wanted to be really sure to mix the second pour enough to see if there would be a difference.  Here’s the second pour.
Tumblr media
It’s just as marbley and I mixed the CRAP out of it this time. So, that’s just how it looks.
UNLESS.
Silicone is reactive to environmental moisture. That marbling could actually be tiny bubbles, and then there are the other obvious bubbles too. There are a few things that might have caused bubbles to form: 1. I added water to my Play-Doh. Perhaps I should have used something else to make it soft instead, or gotten new Play-Doh. 2. It’s possible I didn’t let the mold release sit long enough after adding it. 3. While the weather station said it was dry enough in town, I didn’t have a hygrometer so it’s possible my house was too humid.
Will the bubbles affect the resin casting?
Here’s the mold after opening ( which was a pain in the butt, let me tell you ), removing the original and the pour spout clay, and cutting so the pour spout would be neat, plus adding an air hole.  I used rubber bands and Legos to hold it shut tight for pouring the resin. I mixed and poured the resin in.
Tumblr media
I manipulated it a little, pressing on the sides and such, hoping to work up any bubbles.
Here it is cured.
Tumblr media
There are tiny bubbles in it that I can already see at the top of the pour spout flashing. Bummer, but let’s see how it went otherwise!
Here it is raw out of the mold.
Tumblr media
When you powder your mold, it gives the casting a matte texture.  That’s great because I need to put clay on this and maybe glue, and the texture will help them hold onto the piece. On a final casting, the matte will help you prime and paint as well.
Here’s the mold inside. Again, it’s powdered, with release spray and then baby powder. I’d like pure talc but the only sources I found offer huge amounts - more than I’ll ever use.  So I bought 1.5 oz of Johnson & Johnson’s and I just have to deal with the smell and hope the fragrance isn’t doing anything weird to my process.
Tumblr media
See how the acorn nut registration marks are fine and some of the ones I poked into the clay are AWOL?  They were sticking pretty terribly and I didn’t want to stretch or tear my mold so I cut some of them as I separated the halves.  I think they were too deep and narrow. I’m not going to poke holes again; instead, I’ll press additional  acorn nuts into the clay upside-down if I want inverted registration marks.
But let’s look at the casting under the light!
Tumblr media
Just beside my grody thumbnail you can see a huge bubble, and another on the other steeple crest. I didn’t aim right with my spout and air vent placement, it seems.  But this isn’t a final piece so I can still use it.  Oh, and there are the million tiny bubbles too, so I am really suspecting a humidity issue here.
I’ll buy a humidity meter before I cast anything else, I promise!
Here’s the casting beside the original, after I trimmed the spouts and a bit of the flashing/ seams. Sorry about the crappy and inconsistent photo quality, people; I’ll try to set something up for more quality and uniform results.
Tumblr media
Anyway, pretty cool!  The tips aren’t as sharp as the original because air got trapped there... I really need to figure out how to create reservoirs or something before I cast the final.  I can add epoxy clay to this one and shape new pointed ends, but I don’t want to have to do repairs like that every time.
Next post, see me hack it up! Thanks for reading. 😘

Goddamn it, Overwatch, do I know how to pick ‘em or what? In the span of under six months, I bought a Hanzo nendoroid, Jinx’s Ultimate Hanzo hoodie, and the Overwatch artbook. Inevitably, I will purchase the upcoming D.va figma, too. For now, the D.va Nendoroid sates my needs because it’d be a sin not to buy a figurine of my girl.
The D.va Nendoroid comes with three faces (default, happy, and the adorable winky face!), her bubble gum (which took me a while to figure out; on its own it’s a pink circle on a transparent stick), a miniature version of her MEKA, her gun, and numerous hands, including two that holds a bag of chips and her cellphone. She’s got a lot of props and versatility, a testament to her character.
Hanzo’s my favorite character, but D.va was one of the first I gravitated towards to when I heard about Overwatch and I’m relieved I was able to pick up on her move set (she’s my main.) I’ve waited for years to see more Koreans in Western media, something I’ve seen increasing in the last decade or so. The recent wave of D.va products and spotlights have been great; I can’t wait for more stuff with her.

A while back you said that you missed the Free Skate Yuuri nendoroid but I saw one on eBay today for $40!!! Go get em tiger!
this one, right? this is depressing, and i’m sorry anon, but you saw a bootleg. sometimes it’s difficult to spot one, and i don’t actually know if many people are good at spotting bootlegs, so i made a quick thing for you and others who wanna know.
so like, yoi nendos are done through orange rouge, which is a collab between good smile and max factory to provide figures and goods of male characters. if the goodsmile logo isn’t in the top right corner, it’s going to be the collab logo.
here’s a couple of my own!
Tumblr media
umaru is in the back with a regular goodsmile logo.
conan is in the middle, with a goodsmile logo and a slight rip(kms), as well as the tottori ‘made in japan’ logo! the choking hazard warning is on top because the box itself was made differently(no window) during first release, and they aren’t going to redesign a new box just for a rerelease.
then you see yuuri’s box in the foreground. yuuri was modeled through orange rouge, so you can see the OR logo in the corner. also take note of the product logos, the logos for the show (or game) the character is from in the top left of the boxes.
when it comes to bootlegs, they never have the trademarked logos on the boxes. if they did, it would open them up to serious lawsuits. to get around this, bootleggers simply don’t use the logos at all.
Tumblr media
here’s an imgur link of this image, and i’ll describe it below as well.
on the left is a legitimate nendoroid, ripped from yykawaii
on the right is a bootleg, from the ebay seller anon mentioned.
firstly, secondly, and fourthly, like i mentioned earlier, is the issue of logos. they won’t be present on bootlegs. for number 4, good smile puts the nendoroid logo and the sculptor credits on the box. when you get your nendoroid, you can hop on twitter and thank your sculptor directly! thirdly though, is the issue of the actual quality of the figure itself, which as you may be able to tell, is Bad.
Tumblr media
“whats symmetry??” - direct quote from the automated machine that spit this monstrosity out of the depths of hell
the eyes and eyebrows are positioned wrongly, the neck joint is visible, the outfit is seemingly modeled flat, and the arms are just.... rly something, huh....
in the description its listed as “china version” which is a dead giveaway that it’s bootlegged. anything that claims to be a nendoroid and says “china version” is 100% bootlegged.
Tumblr media
(unless its this exact specific miku, which is only chinese because they made the box art chinese)
all nendoroid products are made in the good smile factory in tottori, japan. there’s chinese distributors, but they are selling good smile imports from japan. there is no such thing as a “chinese version” nendoroid, but there are such things as nendoroids that are only being released in a certain region, like hong kong, taiwan, singapore, and so on. this was the case with a recent release of Pkmn Trainer Red.
Tumblr media
those still have the logos on them though lmfao.
i actually messaged the seller to figure out what the hell they were thinking, and this is the result:
me:
The Free Skate figure you listed is a bootleg. You should state that clearly in the title and description before someone buys it thinking it's legitimate. Because surely that isn't your intention...
seller:
This is not a bootleg. I listed the item in my description as a China Version bc it has flaws such paint job flaws and other minor flaws. All good smile company products are made in China and the ones that are accepted by japan good smile company inspection and passed are considered japan release or japan version. The ones that aren’t accepted are considered China version. I’m a us seller not a China seller where they sell bootlegs with a missing arm or a missing eye or the parts don’t fit. Our product is totally fine it just it has minor flaws such as paint job. Did you not read our description section?
me:
I did read the description section. There is no such thing as a "China Version" nendoroid, unless plainly stated in the name of it, such as the case with Hatsune Miku 854. All except for a very small number of Good Smile Nendoroid products are made in a factory in Japan, and that small number, as i stated, contains the word "CHINESE" in the name. This fact is relayed on Good Smile's bootleg warning page. (https://partner.goodsmile.info/support/eng/fake/)
Also relayed on the page is that all good smile nendoroid products will have the good smile logo and nendoroid series logo on the box, which your listing does not show, because it would open up lawsuits if the manufacturer tried it. Even if your listing was somehow miraculously some kind of special version that doesn't have the company logos, it should at least have the product logo for yuri on ice in the top left, which it doesn't. additionally, all yuri on ice nendoroids have an Orange Rouge logo in the top right, because that's the partner company that modeled them.
I fully believe it was made in china, but it's not a good smile product and is not a nendoroid. just list it as a figure then, not trademarked terms.
if you're a US seller, i'm actually concerned you were fooled by a china manufacturer into selling these when they're fake. it would be smart to notify Good Smile of the manufacturer then so they might have the opportunity to take legal action for using the Good Smile name and Nendoroid trademark to sell counterfeit goods.
seller:
I hope you know that it has all of that information in the back of the box and I have attached the picture of the back of the box for you. I bought this from a us store and they are a reputable anime store and I have all the receipts for this product. It’s very offensive to me that you are sending me these messages. Please do not message me anymore.
me:
I will no longer contact you then. I'm sorry you got ripped off.
the thing is, their reputation actually is good, and they have other nendos in their listings that are legitimate, it’s really just this one thing. and that’s pretty depressing imo.
in their last message to me, they attached this image of the back of the bootleg’s box.
Tumblr media
now here is an image i just took of my eros yuuri nendo’s box.
Tumblr media
quiz! can you spot the difference between my box and the bootleg’s box?
if you said “there isn’t a single goddamned logo on the bootleg’s box” then you’re correct! additionally, the “contact good smile here!” box is also missing. because they cannot legally claim to be good smile and you cant contact good smile over a bootleg.
here’s yykawaii’s box back.
Tumblr media
their logo is covering the orange rouge logo, but the nendoroid logo and the contact box are both present, because its legitimate.
and there’s my afternoon’s effort! i’m done for the day.
tl;dr here’s some tips on how to spot a bootleg nendo, NEVER buy nendos on ebay, and ALWAYS report bootleg listings. sorry abt the long post!

Down the rabbit hole: Aichi
As you might remember, tomorrow is Chimame-tai live show in Osaka! I arrived to Osaka in advance so as to get accustomed to how things work here (like transport and such). Namba is the big entertainment district of Osaka with lots of malls, shopping arcades and such. There was also a little otaku district with the usual shops like Animate, Gamers, Melonbooks and such. Gamers had a little “Gochiusa ~Dear My Sister~ museum” with random Gochiusa merch being sold. Animate and Melonbooks also had somewhat elaborate Gochiusa displays. Namba Marui Gochiusa shop sold pretty much the same stuff as Shinjuku Marui Annex, except the T-shirt was store-specific:
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, I was planning something special for today. Unfortunately it involved travelling to Aichi prefecture (Nagoya) which is about 1 hour from Osaka on Shinkansen. Fortunately I had a JR pass so it wouldn’t cost me anything. Naturally I managed to board the only Shinkansen not covered by JR pass (Nozomi) when I had a reserved seat for Hikari Shinkansen leaving from the same platform, to the same destination, a few minutes later. I only figured out what happened when I found my reserved seat occupied by somebody else. Thankfully I wasn’t caught by a train conductor and got off on Kyoto station and then boarded the right train. I also forgot the phone charging cord and apparently they’re incredibly expensive in Japan... Well, anyway, I arrived in Nagoya and bought today’s new Kirara MAX! By the way, Nagoya has an animu mascot “Nagoya-tan”:
Tumblr media
A little bit of trivia: Aichi prefecture is sometimes called the “black hole of anime”, because new late night anime is usually shown on local television in Tokyo and Osaka areas, while Nagoya, situated between them, gets jack shit. Why would I go to such a place? Well, keep reading.
Also here’s Comic Girls’ Irokawa Ruki anime design from the new MAX:
Tumblr media
I’ve also been entering random Lawsons since the beginning of the trip and finally found one doing something Gochiusa-related here, in Nagoya. The campaign was “buy 3 out of certain selection of sweets, get a sticker of your choice”. They were sufficiently cheap that I decided to try it just once.
Tumblr media
Now the time has come to reveal the true goal of this visit. Yesterday, I took a reservation in a pizzeria called Belcorno, situated in a northern suburb of Nagoya. Why would I travel to another city just to visit that place? Well, the reason is, the owner of this pizzeria is very talented at doing latte art, and you may have seen some of his pieces on Twitter or elsewhere. Also I’m pretty sure he’s a Gochiusa fan. Basically this is one of the few places where you can get a high quality latte art of your favorite character. First you need to get a reservation as described here (just email is ok, can be in English). Send the image references for your character. Then when you have the date and time confirmed, you need to travel to the actual place. First, reach the Nagoya station. Then using the local train service, go to Owari-Ichinomiya station. Then it’s about 15 minutes walk to southwest of the station. There you will find an unassuming building with Italian flags.
Tumblr media
Inside it looks like a usual restaurant, if you ignore the unopened box with Nendoroid Chino on the counter. Also there was a wall with sketches by visiting artists(?) though I didn’t recognize anyone at a glance. I was the only person there, other than the owner, Yuichi Ito. After sitting me at the table, he started working on my first latte art order, Momone, the main character of Doushite Watashi ga Bijutsuka ni!? who I chose because I’m pretty sure nobody ordered her before, and the result was this:
Tumblr media
Pretty much perfect, isn’t it? The foam which the picture is drawn on is quite thick and doesn’t get disrupted easily, even when you drink from the cup. It was sad to destroy such a work of art, thankfully I also ordered a cheesecake to make it easier. Meanwhile the chef was working on my second request, which was Cocoa from season 2 episode 10 (I would’ve asked something from Dear My Sister but there aren’t any references except for what’s shown in the trailers). I noticed that the in-store music started playing Gochiusa BGM tracks, which I don’t know if was on purpose or just a coincidence (I can see them being in a regular rotation). Anyway Cocoa also came out great, as expected.
Tumblr media
Actually they look even better IRL because foam reflecting light sources makes photos difficult. This all cost me about 2400 yen, which is a bargain IMO. Especially the dessert was pretty cheap in addition to latte art. I only realized that after getting the bill, otherwise I would’ve ordered a second dessert. I totally recommend giving this restaurant a try, if you happen to be anywhere near it. It should be easily possible to get a reservation on a weekday, but on the weekends there is more activity.
So that was my detour to Aichi prefecture and now I’m back to Osaka and going to see Chimame-tai live tomorrow. Stay tuned for the report on that.

Wake Up, May’n Famitsu Interview
Tumblr media
*** TL Note: The kanji  笑 written in the interview is the equivalent of lol, so it symbolizes laughter from that person.
First off, Wake Up May’n. How did such a collaboration come to be? Can you tell us how this all started?
May’n: It was at an event in 2016, the Nendoroid 10th Anniversary Live I think it was called, and that’s where I first saw Wake Up, Girls. I took a look at their stage performance, and it was just love at first sight. Right after their performance ended I tweeted them saying “They were shining so bright!!”. After that, I watched all of the anime and from there I became a huge fan. Sometime after, whenever I’ve met up with WUG’s staff they’ve told me how much they liked me, so I told them “Let’s sing together then!” So from there we got to collab and sing together for one night at Anime Jam 2016. That event made me realize how popular such a unit could be. It was pretty unexpected.
Seeing how you’re an artist too, or really a fan, this must’ve come as a huge surprise for you.
That’s right, I’m just your average fan.
Did you two [Nanami and Miyu] see the tweets?
Miyu: It was such a popular topic among the members! “That May’n-san?! Interested in US?!?!”
Nanami: “She saw all of the anime??” “In such a short amount of time?!” All the members were sort so giddy after hearing that.
(笑) By the way May’n-san, who’s your oshi from the group? ***TL Note: Oshi is term for most liked member of an idol group.
May’n: I get asked that pretty often, but I really love all 7 members!
You really do support each and every one of them don’t you?
May’n: Yes. When I first saw them on stage, seeing them sweat from all that energy and passion, I just thought they were amazing. I could also feel a sort strong bond between the fans too. That sensation I felt then was what got me to start watching the anime. That feeling still hasn’t left me even to this day. My impression of them grew over time, and they’re still full of so much passion!
(To Miyu and Nanami) So it’s like that.
Nanami: Ahhh! I’m so glad I was sweating!!
Miyu: And here I tend to worry a lot about sweating.
May’n: Is that so?!
Nanami: WUG’s uniform has long sleeves and it tends to get really hot.
Miyu: During the summer we usually wear the “Shoujo Koukyoukyoku” uniforms pretty often. And conversely with “Beyond the Bottom”, we wear these thin white garments during the winter. So with that, WUG is really thrown all over the place haha!  (笑)
So back to Anime JAM, how did all of you from WUG feel about that collaboration?
Miyu: Of course we knew about May’n even before we started our work as Wake Up, Girls. She’s such a big name Anisong artist! Every time we heard her voice, we would be like “WHAT DO WE DO!?!?! OUR EARS ARE SO EXCITED!!!”, especially during her solo.
Nanami: Waa! We were so happy!
Miyu: Mayushii was like “Wow, what do I do?! May’n is singing my solo part!” (笑)
May’n: Me too! I was thinking “Ahh… I wonder if it’s alright for me to do this, because this is Mayushii’s part after all!!” I was really conflicted then. (笑)
Tumblr media
WUG and May’n at Anime JAM 2016
Speaking of which, May’n-san. How did it feel singing “Tachiagare”?
May‘n: Learning the dance was pretty difficult. On top of that, I also had to learn to sing a new song. WUG being able to have the strength to continue singing and dancing together really makes me admire them even more! But because I love WUG so much, I wanted to persevere and properly present their song, Tachiagare. Since it was a collab after all, I studied and trained as hard as I could saying things like “So this move goes like so, right?” and “I’ll also dance to this part too!”
Miyu: I remembered a lot of things from past rehearsals, so after all that time I felt like I became a master.
Nanami: Right? The rehearsal went smoothly and was completed in the blink of an eye.
WUGners really do go all out don’t they? (笑) Have your impressions of May’n changed after meeting her?
Nanami: During Anime JAM we wore our uniforms from the song “Bokura no Frontier” which is a light blue color. In accordance, May’n-san chose to wear clothes that were a similar style to ours. So at first, we all had this image of May’n-san being “cool”, but since that event we came to learn that she’s a really kind and friendly person. We were just so happy.
Miyu: We usually had this image in our heads of May’n-chan in tanks tops and short pants thinking “SO COOOOOL!” but then we were like “MAY’N-CHAN IN A SKIRT?! AAAAAAAH SO CUUUUTE!”
May’n: Thank you. (笑)
How about you May’n-san? Has your impression of WUG changed as well?
May’n: I get this feeling from them that they all have this place where they want to be. Striving hard to reach a goal. They do so many things like music videos, modeling for photos, and etc. They even practice a lot during their free time too. I felt really drawn to them because of that. Even now my impression of them hasn’t changed, but more like it’s been reaffirmed.
I see. On to another subject, what are your favorite songs from each other?
May’n: Mine has to be Beyond the Bottom. Seeing WUG perform that song was what made me fall for them. Seeing them in that white one-piece, singing and dancing frantically with their hair flying about while also perspiring. I thought of it as something “sacred”.
It really felt like you were watching a drama of sorts wasn’t it?
May’n: That’s right! Just like that! Because of that I really wanted to follow WUG-chan and ended up watching the entire anime series.
Nanami: That really makes happy… I’m so glad we’ve been trying so hard up to now.
How about you two? What are your favorite songs from May’n?
Miyu: For me it would have to be… “Diamond Crevasse”!
Nanami: Ah! That’s what I wanted to say!
Miyu: (笑) I’ll like any song, but during the Aniuta Live 2017 (AniUpa) I was listening to the song from backstage. When I heard it I got goosebumps! It felt like a song from the heart. It really moved me. I was like “For some reason I’m crying!” (笑)
Nanami: My choice is also the same, “Diamond Crevasse”. It was also at AniUpa 2017, when I heard it I could feel it giving courage but also moving me to tears. “What are these feelings??” We’ll never forget that figure and powerful performance. At that time, we felt like we wanted to do a performance that would be just as deep as that.
May’n: Thanks so much!
Tumblr media
May’n performing at AniUpa 2017
Miyu: “Belief” is also a really cool song!
Nanami: It really does have an amazing sensation.
Miyu: The song has wide range and depth to it!
Nanami: Yup, I agree.
(Everybody laughs)
Miyu: I also think your cute songs are pretty great too.
May’n: Really? (笑) Thank you!
So tell us, Wake Up May’n! One kind of song is One In a Billion?
May’n: The title of the anime it’s a theme song for, “Restaurant to Another World”, holds a hint. “A once in a lifetime encounter” is the theme of the song. I feel like it’s something that was created because of my meeting with WUG. It’s a song that gives me the hope and excitement to explore the unknown.
Nanami: It’s the opening theme of “Restaurant to Another World” after all, so you’ll hear some cute words like “Peko Peko” sprinkled like spice onto the lyrics.
Miyu: It really is a song that brings out excitement. Just like May’n-chan said, this song wouldn’t be a thing if it weren’t for WUG and May’n meeting. In the first half of the song, we’re divided into singing our own parts, but during the last part we end up coming together. I think it’s a great song.
So May’n and WUG come as one later in the song.
Miyu: Yes. It’s an important point in the song, and I hope people give it a good listen.
Is there any part of the song that feels different from your past ones?
Nanami: The lyrics in the song feel really bright, whereas some of WUG’s song lyrics feel pretty dark. (笑)
May’n: That’s pretty surprising.  (笑)
Nanami: When I first went over the lyrics, I was so surprised that I said “It’s so blinding!!”
May’n: I thought so too.  (笑)
Miyu: We really did have the same thing in mind.  (笑)
May’n: But still, I was glad to have basked in WUG-chan’s cuteness. It felt really refreshing to sing a song that was brimming so much with smiles and cheer. A lot of my songs don’t carry that kind of energy.
Haha, it must feel like walking into a dark house when you come home.
May’n: Well they’re just lyrics, y’know.  (笑)
What can we expect when listening to One In A Billion?
Miyu: At first the song starts off with a relaxing and slow tempo, but once the doors are opened a rush of energy just flows through. I hope it’s something that a lot of people will look forward to.
Nanami: Before the chorus, we have a part where we say “FU! SION! MIX! CHA!”. Lyrics like that kind of feel like there’s some sort of communication going on between a cook and their customers. I’d like people to enjoy that.
May’n: Lots of food words are inserted throughout the song, but there are also the words “Like and Dislike” too to show that there’s lots of things that link food and life together. I want people to pay close attention to those parts. Also, I hope that some WUG fans can discover me the way I discovered them. It makes me excited for what the future holds and what kind of people I’ll encounter along the way.
So WUG, you performed at Osaka for the first time. What was it like?
Nanami: We were wondering what the audience would be like since it was our first performance their after all, but we were really well received.
Miyu: Their excitement just exploded!
Nanami: We thought “Thank goodness!” And during the later parts we just sang.
May’n: Dancing itself must’ve been difficult.
Miyu: It was pretty hard. The bar for WUG has definitely been raised as of late.
Nanami: So in our setlist we sang “Koi de Ai de Bokun Desu” and after that we sang “One In a Billion”.
May’n: Eeh?! Wow! So it’s just one dance after another!
Nanami: Yep! And even after that we still had character songs to perform…
Miyu: It was really exhausting. (lol)
(Everybody laughs)
May’n-san, what are your thoughts on singing and dancing during music videos?
May’n: I’ve had experience performing with other dancers while being in the center, but I did have face some difficulties during changes in formation. In regards to positioning, I’m used to a 0.5 spaced increments. WUG on the other hand uses formations with .25 spaced increments, which I’m not used to at all (笑). Even though I wasn’t used to the spacing, I felt like I could match up my rhythm pretty well with the people next to me.
Editor’s note: Singers will usually be in the center of performances with their location being marked as 0. So with .5 space increments the dancers on both sides of her, the locations of each performer would be like so: 1.5 .5 ->1-> 1.5 The smaller the increment space, the more complex the formations tend to be.
Tumblr media
Nanami: There certainly were some tricky details.
Miyu: We did have quite a few patterns.
Nanami: It certainly varies with each song, but the A and B melodies and chorus were pretty different from each other. Our dance instructor, Satomi-sensei, was very particular about our choreography/formations and wanted to look beautiful.
I see. So after all of that, did you end up having an even deeper respect for WUG?
May’n: Yes. Dancing in formations has always been a specialty of WUG’s, but I found myself a little panicked when I tried doing it too.
So you say the dancing in itself was pretty difficult, but did you have any other troubles when recording the music video?
Miyu: The dance scenes with the bread was pretty tricky.
Ah, I see that scene where you looked like you were kneading the bread. Eh? Wait, did you have to learn that on the spot?
May’n: Yes, because there were solo cuts within that segment, we practiced independently between those breaks. Everybody else was learning it quickly, so I had to ask the people next to me “Please show me how to do it! Just one more time!” (笑). I messed up a lot during the filming, which is why I’m glad we were just recording a music video.
Wow, it’s a video made up of so many trying moments. Were there any other highlights?
Nanami: I don’t know if you can notice it, but there’s this scene where a boy walks through the door and when everybody notices the boy they stopped what they were doing. For my part I kind of had to stumble a bit while holding the plates. It was pretty hard to act like I was stumbling so evertime in my head I would think “This doesn’t seem right.” (笑)
Miyu: (笑) In the scene where we were making sandwiches, everybody had to look as if they were fighting the camera. So everybody was handed a kitchen utensil, so I wondered what I would get. But they told me “Takagi-san, you’re going to do a chopping motion with your hands.” I was like “EEEHHHHHHH?!” I was expecting to be handed a really big kitchen utensil or something!
May’n: I see! So that’s why you were being so ecstatic with those rolling pins!
Oh, so a cutting motion was what you were trying to go for.
Miyu: Yes, that’s right (笑)
May’n: I thought those hands looked very pretty (笑).  My highlight for the music video is their solo cuts. In those parts it looked like they were saying “Excuse me, can I have your attention?”. Even though they didn’t say it out loud, everybody would pay attention anyways (笑). As a WUGner I felt really satisfied with those scenes.
I agree, everybody really did look adorable.
May’n: When a different girl was up recording their cut, everybody was like “Kyaa! So cute~! So cool~!”
The cool part must’ve been referring to Yoshioka Mayu-san right?
Tumblr media
***Yoshioka Mayu
May’n: That’s right  (笑).
Nanami: All the members got to see Mayushii’s parts (笑).
Miyu: Kaya was the most noisy then, saying “Whoa whoa whoa! Those hands! Look at them hands go!”
There are quite a few WUG fans in WUG aren’t their? (lol)
Miyu Everybody was having a lot fun with each other (笑).
So this time around, the first limited edition set comes with a bluray that comes with the music video in different angles. Are there any promising scenes to look for?
Miyu: Are alternate angles something people would enjoy?
Advertisement Team: At the top of the screen for the bluray there’s an option to watch the normal version of the music video. There’s also another version where people can watch and enjoy the dance version of the song.
Man, that’s something I really want. The formations look so visually appealing and the dance itself is something I really want to take a look at.
Miyu: This is the first time WUG has shot a full version dance video, so I hope you watch it!
Nanami: We did our best swinging around from the dancing, so I hope you enjoy it!
Miyu: May’n-chan was also pretty cool when dancing too! We did a formation together after all!
May’n: I really tried my hardest (笑)! Having 8 people dancing and singing in a music video isn’t something you see very often, so I’m very happy that we got the opportunity to do this.
So then there’s also another song in the single as well, called “King’s Cadenza” 王様のカデンツァ What kind of song is it?
Miyu: In comparison to “One In A Billion”, “King’s Cadenza” is a sort of relaxing song that gives off a sweet feeling that’s kind of fluffy. In the beginning you can hear us say “PaPaPa-n” which is a sort of fanfare made up of our own voices.
Nanami: The song also has a kind of stylish vibe to it.
May’n: It certainly does show off an adult’s cute charms.
Is it your first time singing this particular style of song?
May’n: Hmm, I don’t think it’s something I’ve really done before. What about WUG?
Miyu: We haven’t done it either.
May’n: Lyrically, the theme is about a “naked king”. But the term “naked king” isn’t used in a bad context. The things you see before you aren’t the only things you can believe in right? You yourself are the only one that can experience what life has to offer and you choose what beliefs to hold, is what those lyrics are. I think that sort of feeling is also in “One In a Billion”.
I see, that’s pretty deep.
Miyu: It really is deep. It’s my favorite song.
What are some highlights in the song?
May’n: The first part of the song where everyone was doing that fanfare was really cute.  I felt like everybody could sing full of smiles and energy with weightless shoulders.
WUG Manager: The fanfare part is especially pretty interesting. We wanted to make it pretty distinctive so there would be directions like “Say it more childlike”, but then there’d be “Sing it a little more mature” but then they’d also say “Sing it a little more stupid-like”. (笑)
(笑) . I wonder which person was singing in that kind of voice.
Miyu: Originally the fanfare part wasn’t supposed to be there, but someone made a request to do it while we were recording.
I see, so that’s what happened.
Miyu: That’s why some of the members had a hard time understanding the directions. I hope people can pay close attention to that part.
May’n: “One In a Billion” is a really great song to do live, whereas King’s Cadenza has a cute charm to it. When singing those two songs I thought “Wow! So I really can sing a wider variety!” I felt really thrilled to increase my repertoire. I really feel that there wasn’t a single wasted moment, and am very glad to have worked on this single.
I’d certainly like to see more of Wake Up, May’n. Are there any other things that you would like to do together as WUM?
Nanami: I really want May’n to make a debut appearance in the anime world!
May’n: Could I be in the new WUG anime coming out?  (笑)
Miyu: Aaah! I’d definitely want to see that happen!
Tumblr media
New TV anime, Wake Up, Girls! Shin Shou premiering October 22, 2017.
Nanami: If May’n became a 2D character, then she could play herself and the characters would end up meeting in the anime too.  (笑)
That way you could consult to a pretty experienced person. (笑)
Miyu: After that I want to do a live as Wake Up, May’n! I wonder if we’ll do it at the release event? Hmmm…
Speaking of which, you have a release event taking place on August 9th. Tell us how excited you are for that.
May’n: All 8 of us will be there together, which is a somewhat rare opportunity. Even though it’s a weekday, I hope a lot of people come.
Miyu: It’s the first time all of us will be performing together as Wake Up, May’n. I hope you look forward to it.
Nanami: When on tour we have 7 members, but with May’n-chan added into the group our songs have a different sensation. I hope that anybody that watched us on tour can see the difference.
Thank you very much! Now this question might seem different from the others, but since One In a Billion is the opening of Restaurant to Another World, please tell us what your favorite foods are!
May’n: It’s not related to “Restaurant to Another World” in any way, but I really like taiyaki! To me, taiyaki in a way is something that’s full of good will! I’d like taiyaki and other Japanese sweets to be enjoyed by people all over the world.
Miyu: Mine would be… Meat. Is what I would like to say, but whenever I go out to eat yakiniku I’d usually order a lot of Chanja! (笑)
May’n: Wait, I order lots of that too! I love it!
Miyu: Eh, you eat it too?? I reaaaally love it too! Chanja and Yuke!
May’n: Yup, I also order lots of Yuke too!
You two are pretty like-minded it seems (笑).
Tumblr media
***TL Note: Yuke (left), also called Yukhoe in Korea, is a dish composed of thinly sliced raw beef with seasoning. Chanja (right) is spicy cod innards. It is also called Là bàn xuěyú nèizàng in China.
Nanami: For my favorite food, I really like Japanese style omelette rice.
May’n: Ah! Me too!
Nanami: I really like it Japanese styled, with lots of mushrooms in it too.
May’n: Hey that’s my favorite style too! You’re really asking for it now, Nanami!
Nanami: Eeh!!  My stomach feels kinda weird! (笑) Other than how I prepare it, I really liked how my Grandmother would make it, adding eggplants on top. It’s a really cherished memory of mine.
So there’s a precious memory like that involved with cooking. May’n-san, can you cook?
May’n: My meals tend to be messy, but I am pretty good at making Omurice and Oyakodon. People say that egg dishes are pretty difficult to make, but I think I do a pretty good job.
Wow that’s pretty impressive. Nanami-san, you cook for yourself too, correct?
Nanami: That’s right. The other WUG members aren’t really good at cooking, so that gives me the privilege of being that only character in a group that can cook (笑).
Haha, Miyu-san, how’s your cooking?
Miyu: Well I really just cook Java Curry (笑).
Nanami: Just Java Curry?!?! (笑)
Tumblr media
Miyu: Using curry ingredients I can also make meat and potatoes too! I try not use the kitchen knife as much as possible so I tend to buy refrigerated vegetable mixes. With that I can make curry pretty quick.
I see (笑). Also, since we usually cover games with our media outlet, what type of games have you been playing lately?
May’n: For me, I’ve been playing “Mario Kart 8″ on the Nintendo Switch so much that I’ve been skipping out on sleep! It’s just so much fun! It’s crazy!  It has to be my favorite game of all time right now.
Nanami: Mario Kart huh~?
Miyu: It sounds fun!
May’n: It really is great to live in age where people all around the world can play online and race each other at anytime. I’m not really good at playing video games though. I’m not really good with games with complex controls, but Mario Kart is different. The controls feel simple. That’s why I like it, because it’s straightforward. Also, I tend to play while using a Mii with my face on it so I’m like “May-san!! Do your best!” cheering her on while I play (笑). My Mii will also cry too when she loses. That’s why I like to play everyday just so I can see her smiling face.
Have you ever played any of the past Mario Karts?
May’n: Mario Kart has been around for a long time so I’ve played it often.
Miyu-san, what type of games do you like?
Miyu: I haven’t really played any recent games, but I have been playing the smartphone version of “Mushihime-sama” lately. The enemies and bullets are quite troublesome, but seeing them explode is quite a refreshing feeling I enjoy. It’s also pretty fun getting through a pinch with the boss battles so I just pull through it.
***TL Note: Mushihime-sama is bullet hell video game, similar to Touhou. It was also released in the US on Steam.
So you like shooters. What about you Nanami-san?
Nanami: I don’t really play video games, but I have been playing “Hachigatsu no Cinderella” and “Soul Reversal”, games with WUG members in them. I always wonder if I’ll end up rolling the members in the gacha. Usually it’s somehow easy for me to get my own characters, but it gets pretty dicey when I try rolling for the other WUG members (笑). It’s so worrisome.
I can imagine (笑). To change the topic, how do you spend your days off?
May’n: I spend it at the gym. I love to kickbox. Whenever I have free time, I try to kickbox. I’ve been doing it for about a year and a half now.
I wonder which WUG members would be susceptible to a lowkick (笑) .
Miyu: I wish Minami and Yoppi good luck  (笑).
They’re pretty small aren’t they?
Nanami: That’s right.
What kinds of thing do you when kickboxing at the gym?
May’n: I don’t do matches, but I do train with my trainer. The constant movement really helps clear my head. I go to the gym alone whenever I have something on my mind.
So you haven’t had any matches yet?
May’n: Not yet.
You haven’t wanted to try it at least once?
May’n: I would like to! (笑)
(笑) What about you Miyu-san? What do you do on your days off?
Miyu: I haven’t really done it recently, but I guess playing the drums. Back in March 2017 during a solo event, I played the drums for a song my character sang.
May’n: Wow that’s impressive!
Miyu: Although I can’t really sing and play drums at the same time (strained laugh). So that’s when I started playing the drums. It was a lot of fun. I used to practice for about 3 hours, and I’d be so focused that time would fly by so quick. By the time it ended I’d be surprised that it’d gotten so dark. After lessons ended I wanted to get back to playing again as soon as possible.
What is it about playing the drums do you find fun?
Miyu: Feeling the change in pressure when I play and moving my legs to the rhythm. The sensation of making music with my body is really interesting.
How do you spend your days off Nanami-san?
Nanami: Me, well I like to throw things away.
May’n: Ehh?!
Do you not have any attachment to material things?  (笑)
Nanami: It’s not like that, but sometimes I’ll find clothes that I bought about 2 years ago. So I go through my pile of clothing, throwing away things I don’t need and choosing the ones I want to keep. At the end of the day I feel pretty refreshed.
May’n: I’m envious~.
Are you the type that likes to collect everything?
May’n: My house kind of looks like Don Quijote (笑).
Tumblr media
***TL Note: Don Quixote (Donki for short) is a convenience store that carries a wide range of products, like clothes, souvenirs, electronics, groceries, and etc.
(Everybody laughs)
I’m sure there are a lot of other people like you, May’n-san, that find it hard to throw things away.
May’n: I also really like hippos! Just with hippo plushies alone, I have 700!
Miyu: EH?! ***TL Note: WTF
May’n: Also, I have a ton of figures. Some people may find my place to be pretty fun or pretty messy. Sometimes people will say “You gotta calm down!” (笑)
Miyu: I really like Donki, so I’m probably the type that would like it (笑).
We’d love to hear more of your private lives, but we have to end things soon. Do you have any messages for the readers?
Nanami: This time around Wake Up, May’n has sung a few songs together. At first it was difficult to call ourselves Wake Up, May’n since it was hard to call May’n-chan without any honorifics, but after getting to know her I can confidently say “We are Wake Up, May’n!”. The 8 of us will be performing as one unit at a release event so I hope you can watch and have fun!
Miyu: With the May’n we were able to meet, we’ll be releasing our single on August 9th. I’m really looking forward to meeting the people that’ll be at the release event! I hope to hear things like “WUM-chan ganbatte!” I hope to hear a lot people call us WUM-chan.
May’n: I’ve never really done this kind of collaboration before, so when they first announced a collab team up with WUG, it felt out of this world. Everybody felt like it was some rare out of this world unit. However, I felt a sense of security like I’ve been doing this for a long time. It’s not something that may seem absolute in the future, but I definitely want to do this again. I want people to believe that it’s not just a festive song just because it’s a collaboration between two performers, but I want them to really enjoy it as one unit.

Good Smile Company snubs first edition collectors
It was gonna be a fine day of salivating over new releases at Wonder Festival 2017 Summer, until my unfortunate eyes landed on the tweet about Kageyama Tobio and Hinata Shouyou Nendoroid Co-de (Jersey version).
Actually I saw that tweet turn up a few times on my timeline but didn’t pay attention then because I thought “Oh great, good for you GSC. Jersey boys were popular enough to warrant a re-release, I’m happy for you.”
But then I noticed the tweet had >1k RTs early in the morning. A little too enthusiastic too fast for a mere re-release. Something was amiss.
Turns out the Haikyuu Co-de re-releases have special volleyball bases. Everything else is exactly the same.
What GSC is telling first edition collectors for Haikyuu:
1) Thanks for supporting GSC and buying the first edition. Thanks for creating the demand for re-release. Now watch as we cater to that demand you created and re-release these figures with something you don’t have.
2) Good luck about selling off your first edition jersey boys with the standard bases, because these are actually the ones that can command a premium in the market.
3) Want to get the special bases? Suck it. Just buy a second set then, maybe you can put the other Karasuno boys’ heads on them and have the whole Karasuno team look EXACTLY the same. Because Karasuno boys ain’t snowflakes after all.
4) Oh but guess what? Maybe, just maybe we will release Co-de for your other Karasuno boys! You’ll cry, and your wallet will bleed even more, but you’ll still buy them when you realise they are different from Kageyama and Hinata Co-de. Or you can choose not to (as a protest against our business practices) and look on sadly while your more forgiving compatriots enjoy new Karasuno bodies.
5) Or maybe you shouldn’t have bought your Haikyuu nendos early. Shame on you. Look at what you’re missing out on. This will teach you a lesson in rushing to buy first editions.
Sure, it’s business after all. Companies do their best to make more business. Go ahead and release alternate versions. Go ahead and make region-exclusives to raise the hype. Sure, that’s all fair game to me. I whine about these but I don’t take them to heart.
But this deal about slapping first edition collectors in their faces? Not cool at all.
I’ve consistently stayed away from talking about anything upsetting when it comes to fandom hobbies. It’s a hobby after all, it shouldn’t warrant unwanted feelings when I’m here to enjoy. So when I saw this, the first emotion was utter disbelief and then I tried to distance myself from the onset of unhappiness. I took a break, went to do some chores and get lunch.
I came back feeling even more upset. That’s how much it means to me. And it’s really disappointing to get this treatment from GSC when I’ve been so supportive of its merchandise.
