Jorge Rivera-Herrans and the entire cast of Epic the musical owe me emotional compensation because I have had two very long days with all day (very fun and enjoyable) trips, and I haven’t cried ONCE. I listened to The Underworld from the Underworld Saga a few minutes ago, and do you want to know what the straw that broke the camel’s back was? The last minute or so of the song with Odysseus’s mother. I’ve shed a few tears over musicals in the past, and I’ve read the Odyssey and didn’t find this moment so emotive in text form, but I was full on SOBBING, then I tried to listen a second time as a form of exposure therapy and IT HAPPENED AGAIN 😭😭😭. I don’t know if it’s because I’m not as close as I could be to my own mother and have regrets about that or if I was simply imagining myself in Odysseus’s shoes but that moment leaves me an utter wreck and I’m not okay.

Like as an Arab in this community it really feels like my voice doesn’t matter. This situation is personal to me. I called his racism and yet a lot of people wanted to doubt and invalidate my voice.

Idk I’m just exhausted from this. I feel like this community needs to re-evaluate some things ngl. I love it regardless but I was pushed into silence because barely anyone even showed me support on my opinions on him. But now that hes being so fucking blatantly racist. Now you realise.

one of the really upsetting things about this amendment is that people think it both validates their overblown response (it shouldn't) and vindicates their belief that the initial decision was made out of greed and not necessity.

so earnestly i hope for the sake of watcher, and for all of us, that it WAS made out of greed tbh, because if they have just walked back a decision that would have kept their company afloat then nobody has won, not even any of you who spent the weekend having a tantrum that you'd lost your 'comfort shows'

Still thinking about Jopson after the other day and I feel like there's a wee bit similarity between he and David Young that I want to discuss and weep over more.

Young clearly had an incredibly difficult, poverty-stricken upbringing 'at the Foundlings' and it shows in the way that just keeps on trucking until he breaks down completely. Enduring all the hardships and misery of Victorian Britain had been ruining his health so much from the day he was born and had been doing it so insidiously that he didn't even think much of all the horrible symptoms of illness that had been inflicting him. They were simply par for the course. He'd been enduring them all his life.

And I think Jopson's deterioration very much echoes all of that. We know he's from a working class background and endured many hardships throughout his life also whether it be, again, the usual awful vagaries of the time period or the additional mental/emotional stress related to his mother.

Like Young, Jopson seems to just keep on trucking until he breaks down completely. One minute we see him help to lift a whole adult man into a whaleboat and then, seemingly in the blink of an eye, there he is in bed going downhill fast. It's not hard to imagine that his hard life would also have had him thinking little of the horrors his body was going through and being destroyed by.

It's not hard to imagine that he also had been enduring those kinds of things all his life...

The point of fanfiction is that IT'S NOT CANON, it's you sitting around with your fave action figures and SMASHING THEM TOGETHER

Sometimes that happens to be the most common pairing or something actually canon. But sometimes, that's you taking a square and a circle and putting them together and saying WHAT IF!

Sometimes it's looking at the parts that make up two entirely different people and asking "What would it take for these two to work together?" and the joy of that sort of exploration and discovery is INDESCRIBABLE
