The Preferable Alternative- Prologue - Part 1
Start (you are here) - Previous (none) - Next
New au. I can't explain the main thought behind this without spoilers. And since i'm jumping straight into a multi-part comic, i won't be giving out any.
Basically vibes for this is that it's kinda creepy and maybe suspenseful with eventual hurt/comfort (if that doesn't make sense, im sorry, i have a hard time describing things). I'm also pretty mean to Donnie. Not "Donnie vs" mean, but unfortunately this idea wouldn't work with anyone else.
(for those that get anxious, like me. There is no main character death. (might not be death at all but we shall see. that depends on one character and even i'm not sure exactly what they'd do yet.) and no one's gets serious physical injuries. Definitely more hurt/comfort than plain angst. b/c that's how i roll. I can't do straight up angst.)
I'll write a proper summery once the prologue's done. I don't want to spoil it too much. For now, just know it's a PB&J duo story that happens during the 6 weeks before the Krang invasion.

I like to think that Force Ghost Anakin ships Sabine and Ezra for a number of reasons, and one of the biggest ones is because he loves drama and knows that Force Ghost Mace Windu is horrified by the idea of his great-grandpadawan marrying into the Disaster Lineage.
I also like to think that anytime Sabine and Ezra are talking with each other or thinking about each other after Sabine begins her Jedi training, their respective force-ghost-master-ancestor will stand behind them and give them advice. Mace Windu is giving Ezra a whole ton of advice about How To Not End Up With Sabine, which Ezra has to ignore because he Very Much Wants To End Up With Sabine. Meanwhile, Anakin is giving Sabine a whole ton of advice on How To End Up With Ezra, which she also has to ignore because Anakin Is Terrible At Starting Healthy Dating Relationships.

For he to whom a watcher's doom   Is given as his task, Must set a lock upon his lips,   And make his face a mask. Or else he might be moved, and try   To comfort or console: And what should Human Pity do   Pent up in Murderers' Hole?
The Ballad of Reading Gaol | Oscar Wilde
Martyn looks at the ground. If he looks at the sky, he'll see-
judgmental remnants of friends / wisps of cloud sailing by / an endless sea of eyes / theater curtains drenched in blood / stars beginning to come out / his own clock, numbers in freefall
So he looks at the grass. The smell of charred flesh hangs on the air, disturbingly close to the steak they'd all been sharing.
He won. Is the thing.
And now Martyn's not sure what he's meant to do with that, with this clawing nauseous sense of victory. With the silence. The feeling of a trap kill elevated to a million, because he pulled off a betrayal none of those bastards would've ever tried to pull.
Except maybe Grian, but Grian never knew when the time was right to drop the act - too used to driving the knife to have access to many unsuspecting backs anymore. Martyn clicks his tongue, remembering Scar's naïveté earlier in the day.
"Fool me twice," he mutters, voice still too loud for a world gone quiet.
Martyn glances across the arena at Scott's armor. It lies abandoned on the ground, grass torn up and marshy from spilled water and blood. He considers the phrase 'a fair fight'.
Rightfully, Scott won- rightfully, he'd been the winner for the entire episode. They'd all been walking dead. Scott was just egregiously better than most of them at PVP. The only reason he'd even been at 4 hours was due to constant, benevolent deaths to allies.
The idea of being handed a win, of Scott letting him win, was repulsive. Incredibly patronizing, really. Martyn has a great deal of respect for Pearl - if Scott had pulled that stunt with him in Double Life, pulled away the chance to prove his victory in any way that mattered- Well. He'd have hunted him down here immediately, Green Life or not.
And how unfair, that everyone else had to claw and bite and scratch for victory. Alone, afraid, hunted - and they would get to calmly fight as equals? Children, smacking at each other to see who would win a game?
No, that didn't interest him at all.
Winning used to mean something; it demanded everything from you. Somewhere along the line- between Scott refusing to Boogey kill and refusing to fight Pearl and refusing to kill him and Impulse, refusing refusing refusing, like this is something you can just turn down like a bad fucking potato-
Winning this game is going to matter again. And if the only thing he has left to pay that cost is friendship, well. Grian paid just as much; and- his lips curl- he's just seen what friendship gets you.
Martyn cranes his head back to smile coldly up at the sky, and the sky strikes down to meet him.

Kind of feel bad for people who head into the books after having already engaged- even passively- with the aftg fandom. like there are so many things that are meant to surprise you. the 'oh's. The looking at everything with neil's pov and only after completing the series realizing what a fucking idiot he was at times. The kisses. Those reveals. The thunderclap of "Doesn't mean I wouldn't-***". Somehow, those guys already know all this. They know at the end there's gonna be a pairing, and that kinda takes away the beauty and surprise of it. They know about a game, the deaths, the characters. It's kinda sad they're never gonna enjoy it the way we did

2023 reads // twitter thread
To Shape A Dragon’s Breath
YA fantasy
a young Indigenous girl finds & bonds with a dragon hatchling - the first time in many generations for her people - and is required to go to the coloniser’s dragon academy in their mainland city, to learn how to raise her dragon and the science of its magic
historical inspired setting on the cusp of industrial revolution with steampunk vibes
bi polyamorous MC, Black lesbian SC, nonverbal autistic SC
#To Shape A Dragon’s Breath#aroaessidhe 2023 reads#this is really really good i loved it!#the chapter titles are all like snippets of a story. or like sentence fragments that match up. which is cool#it is definitely more about being indigenous in a coloniser institution than Dragon School - not Super dragon heavy if you want that#I suspect the subsequent books will get into that when she gets big enough to ride and stuff#t’s also def YA! i’ve seen a few ppl assume it’s adult and be like its very young :( but like. I mean its perfectly reasonable for a 15yo m#definitely a Lot of racism and colonialism which is not fun to read! though it's still through a YA lens. there was def a part of me that#was imagining consequences of the narrative as if it were an adult novel#on that line of thought - at the end a lot of it is kind of solved by them going to the king and he's is like. oh no racism is happening?#that's bad i'll deal with those people! which felt like. a little simplistic. but maybe the easiest way to end the narrative for book 1 -#I don't think the author ACTUALLY is going to portray the king as a Good Guy throughout the series - it just felt conveniently like -#a simple YA solution to some very big and complex elements? if that makes sense? (but again - it is YA so it's allowed I suppose!)#some of the worldbuilding (like all the science learning) is probably setup for next books - we don’t really see any practical application#the romances are also subtle and not Overbearing In Book One which i like - leave some space for the series!#also her getting fanmail from a 10yo mixed race girl who looks up to her 🥺#anyway. i really loved it!#oh also it reminded me a little of leviathan. i guess just the steampunk/time period/european culture....#To Shape A Dragon's Breath

new rgg fans will never know what they missed back in ye olden days of the fandom (like, 2019), doubly so now that scott strichart's deleted his twitter and jon riesenbach's privated. twitter was so fucking fun and then whatever-the-hell at sega of america happened and caused a fucking snowball effect and now we have shitass localization and resulting discourse that makes every release nigh unbearable, misinformation, confusion, people complaining about "bad writing/mischaracterization" not realizing it's because of the shitass english loc, i'm sitting here like jesus christ these loc bitches massacred saejima's character voice, people will never see him as he was intended, as original yakuza 5 localization Correctly painted him, and now they're coming for kiryu. god help us. we used to be a proper fandom. before everyone was subjected to the remastered localizations and shaky eng characterization. no one had even played yakuza 3-5, people still called morning glory "sunshine" orphanage, kiryu was our only protagonist and people still called him "boring", it was beautiful...
anyway gaiden uses affective instead of effective because the current localization team is full of careless dumbasses who don't give a fuck about ensuring they're using correct english grammar and this is not an isolated incident
Tumblr media
#ada speaks#ive been playing through the series again from 0-5 and. yeesh#it goes from LIFE IS GOOD. LOC IS GOOD. to. oh.#yakuza 5's original localization is near perfect and they couldve made it better but instead#they opted for the cost cutting approach and decided NOT to retranslate and instead#just fucking. re-localized the localization and SO much is wrong. so much.#im playing simultaneously with a friend (myself on ps3 them on pc) and seeing the differences#and it happens in y3r and y4r too where#the original line is localized > the remastered line takes it and runs with it bc they have no original translation context#ie. in 3 rikiya says he likes 'wild' dancers. (re: strip club) it gets localized to be him liking 'aggressive' dancers.#in 3 remastered he says he likes AGGRESSIVE DOMINEERING WOMEN and that gets his Gears Turning#or. in 5 shinada says that uno is 'a little sad up top' re: his hair. and 5 remastered he says 'kinda mopey'#because they misunderstood the original english loc and so. completely fucked up the line to mean something else entirely#its like broken telephone#the same is SOMEHOW also happening in 8... i dont know HOW but somehow it fucking is#meanwhile im revisiting zero and going OH YEAH GOOD CHOICE. THAT MAKES SENSE. GREAT WRITING. WOW THAT'S AN A+ INTERPRETATION OF THAT LINE.#i miss the old loc team so bad. bring me back.#its mostly frustrating because i can see the shitass eng writing and still enjoy the game beneath it (unless it's not voiced.) but#i feel so bad for everyone flying blind and forced to take the loc at face value#its been like this since lost judgment but the main story was Fine (if a bit rushed) because. scott was still doing his thing#the substories in lost judgment also felt like they were of the same calibre (shit.) as remastered and. idk.#it seems like its been a shitshow at SoA behind the scenes for Years#and it shows.

What if Chris doesn't show up at Clarisse's house pre botl? What if he's guided (maybe by Hermes) to Connor and Travis' instead?
Chris, who is to me at least implied to be unclaimed as yet in the show, who is suffering severely mentally as a result of what he endured alone in the labyrinth, shows up on Connor and Travis' doorstep. They haven't seen him in years now, not since he ditched camp to follow Luke to Kronos. He's clearly unwell and barely recognises them. They worry it's a trick, and that's when Chris is claimed by Hermes. The Stolls decide to take the risk, well Connor mainly does; Connor has more faith in Hermes than Travis ever did. They bring Chris to camp, where they and Clarisse try to help him, to keep him going until Mr D returns. Mr D does save the day, Chris' mind is restored, but then there's the hard part. The initial distrust, the slow and painful path to reconciliation and redemption. If done right, it could be a banger of an arc.
It gives a reason a better reason for why Katie accuses Travis of being the spy in tlo; "you brought your brother - who wasn't claimed until recently and only you and Connor saw it - to camp after he showed up apparently randomly at your doorstep? After he joined Luke - your other brother - and Kronos? After he went on a mission to try and use the labyrinth to destroy camp?" Travis, of course, wasn't the spy, but at least there's a reason for suspicion on the others' parts outside of 'he's Luke's brother' (which is the general consensus and interpretation from the fandom, which never really made sense to me as Luke had left camp four years before tlo and there's a high chance Katie wasn't even at camp at that point).
They've already started by introducing Chris so early, but I hope they expand his story and the Stolls' roles, especially in botl and tlo. Let them have complicated feelings about Luke. Let them mourn him, and let them hate him. Let the angst hit.
