I found one of your old posts (I think it was old, I had to scroll for a while to find it) and Oh. My. God. You just said everything I thought while looking through some Rise/2012 crossovers yesterday!
Especially this part:
"Rottmnt fans will create fanfics where Rise boys kill and then make them look all badass and every other iteration being terrified of them, completely forgotting that every other iteration EXCEPT Rise has canonically killed before and done and seen some intense gory stuff"
This sh*t bothered me so much! I'm all in to explore the concept of "the rise boys were created to be war weapons", but you cannot convince me that the less fighting-trained version of the turtles, who also happens to be the one with less canonical trauma, would be able to scare the 2012 or 2003 boys?! The worlds where the boys actually, cnonically have body counts?!
Hello!
Yeah it bothers me too. A lot in fact.
I was at the end of my rope and done with that nonsense when I made that particular post.
Thing is, you can't take a difference in genre and apply it to a world that works on entirely different rules and expect it to make logical sense. I made a lot of counterpoints based on canon to the "Weapons of War so best at everything" fan logic out of pure spite. It hurts to see something you grew up with and related to so much being shit on just for the sake of making another look better. Not to mention that all the versions are very much trained and experienced and fought off several alien invasions and have killed and maimed before. They won't be scared or panicked. They've handled a lot lot LOT worse than flashy superhero teens thinking they own the world (that's not how the Rise boys are but that's the exact vibe they give off in such crossovers).
They are 'Weapons of War' and I agreed that exploring their abilities and powers and such would be interesting. No complaints there but keep it out of the crossovers. Adding all that to the crossovers and making everyone else weak is just... That's just wrong on so many levels and hurts an entire fanbase, not just a few people.
Besides, all the ninja turtles from all iterations are technically just as much "Weapons of War". They ALL have higher than normal strength, tenacity, speed, healing factor, endurance, stamina, skills etc.

surprise!! remaking this post with corrected, updated links!!
Introducing…
‘DINO’-tello
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
BIG THANK U to Anixolt on twitter for accepting this commission request!!! I'm so excited to share this 'Future' Donatello with you all!
Set in an alternate reality, Donnie & his brothers go back in time to the cretaceous period to stop a cataclysmic event. However, in doing so, the four brothers get stuck in the past and live among the dinosaurs.
[link to twitter thread]
(Note! Permission to post my commission on tumblr was given by artist via Twitter!)
More lore below!
Because the Ooze was designed to make super soldier mutants, it helps its host adapt to the conditions around them. After a few years, it started to double-mutate him to adapt to his new harsh environment, making him very raptor-like.
Because of his double mutation and trauma of past events, Donnie is at risk of going into a feral “Savage” mode like Raph
Has two modes— ‘Hunter’ and ‘Scientist/Alchemist’
While hunting Donatello relies on his instincts. Becomes very aggressive and territorial.
He uses an ankylosaurus skull and other dinosaur parts as his battle shell and protective gear while hunting
When he isn’t hunting, Donnie is trying to reinvent necessities to make living in a prehistoric era a bit easier with what materials are available to him
Whatever he doesn’t have, he’ll make. From scratch.
Dino-Tello’s concept was inspired by a similar 2003 TMNT episode where they go to the past, 2003 Leatherhead, Tarzan, and the anime series ‘Dr. Stone’
His concept is meant to emphasize Donnie’s other strengths beyond technology— such as his Super-intelligence, his close-combat fighting skills, and ability to communicate with other creatures (as shown in the Todd Scouts episode)
He and his brothers tame a triceratops and name him Zog, who was both a pet and steed
For one reason or another… Donatello is the last turtle standing
However, due to classic Hamato shenanigans— ‘Dino’tello might not be all alone for too long 👀👀👀

Things in Rise that Echo 2003 TMNT
Hi Ame here back on my bullshit-- getting right into it. I can't remember where or who said it, but one of the creators of Rise mentioned that 03 was their favorite iteration, and it really shows sometimes. Spoilers for 03 and Rise below ;)
The first thing that comes to mind is Shredder. "But Ame, 03 Shredder was a little alien guy-" NO I'M TALKIN ABOUT THE ORIGINAL SHREDDER. In 03, Ch'rell took on the mask of a well-known boogeyman at the time; the Shredder, who was a demon that had lived 1,000 years ago. Oroku Saki was a man who defeated the demon alongside the rest of the Ninja Tribunal, and after he defeated it, became possessed by it after falling prey to its promise of power.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The most obvious I think are their markings. In 2003 they use 'chi' to give them mystic abilities. It's the act of becoming one with the world around you, but it also seems to work when you are connected to the people around you. Even the medallions over their chest mimic the Hamato symbol that glows on Rise's chest when activating their ninpo.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Their markings even mimic each other (except for Raph, whose Rise version doesn't have any markings, which is a travesty). Leo has slash-like marks, Donnie has geometric marks, and Mikey's got a lot of circles!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
NOW OKAY THIS ONE'S A BIT OF A STRETCH, BUT-- Leo has made portals with his sword before! Specifically, he held one open with it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's the little things <3
Like the ghost of dead Hamatos coming back to assist their rat sons in the final moments :)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some more small things! Raph and Donny's brains being rifled through! (Which also happens to 2012 Mikey)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Raph's and Leo's shoulder! (Hard to get a good shot of Leo's, thanks 4kids) Ironically both happening at a moment where Leo has "failed" to protect his family.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rise Mikey being the "greatest mystic warrior" reminds me a lot of what is alluded to many times with 2003 Mikey; he's very good at what he does! He's a Battle Nexus Champion! He's the one who can channel chi the best! He could surpass Leo even in skill if he actually applied himself, but he doesn't. Because he just doesn't find it fun. But it's shown a little in the episode Same as it Never Was, where he's able to dispatch a whole group of guys with guns all on his own, including three armored cars and a HELICOPTER.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also making comparisons between 03 SAINW!Mike and Rise F!Leo losing their arms is kinda a stretch but I'll point it out anyway.
And speaking of the movie. My absolute FAVORITE thing to compare is the Krang of Rise to Sh'Okanabo of 2003's Fast Forward season. It's like they took all the concepts of Sh'Okanabo and made it BETTER. Everything was executed SO MUCH BETTER.
Gooey tentacle villain? Check
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Weirdly organic flesh ship? Check
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Alien invaders turning people into drone versions of their species? Check
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Also side note about that one, I think it's hilarious that in 03 Raph's the only one who DOESN'T get Kanaboe'd but in Rise Raph is the only one who DOES get Krang'ed.)
Taking over structures with their goop? Check
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And finally. Small boy son that is a descendant of Casey Jones. Check :)

More General Rangers Headcanons
Sixth Rangers are inherently more powerful than the regular Rangers. You'll notice that most can 1v1 difficult enemies that prove challenging to even the Reds of the team (ie.: Zhane (In Space Silver) 1v1'ing Ecliptor). This is because, on a power scale, the Sixth is supposed to balance the team out. A team that can work as individuals and an individual that can work on/with a team
Reds develop an attachment to their Sixth Rangers, be it romantic (Carter Grayson/Ryan Mitchell) or platonic (Leo and Mike Corbett), but it's close and quickly formed
Similarly, Sixth Rangers form quick and close attachments to their Reds, platonic or romantic
Pinks and Blues are either siblings or best friends and there is no in-between
Survivor's Guilt is a powerful force and 90% of the Rangers have it, especially the alien Rangers or those like the Lunar Wolf Wildforce Ranger
Rangers getting discouraged and believing themselves unworthy of the Power is also common, so there's a network of Rangers you can call to help with that kind of stuff
If you don't already have fantastic spatial awareness, you develop it pretty quick as a Ranger. It's damn near impossible not to because of all the attacks by Monsters, Bugs, etc
Red Rangers can give orders to their teams and the Power will give little pushes for the other Rangers to following it, but that doesn't mean the other Rangers can't refuse of their own volition
The Morphin' Grid affords its Rangers a form of immortality. They can be fatally injured, but otherwise, Rangers are effectively immortal
Some Rangers go on to become police officers, but most Rangers agree that working to assist and help people (ie.: lifeguards, doctors, breaking ground in the science fields) is best. Some of them establish dojos to train people to protect themselves (Tommy Oliver) and others work with volunteer efforts (Troy Burrows)
Veteran Rangers, Reds especially, tend to hang back during crossover events- this is to give the new Reds the confidence in themselves and their abilities, and allow them to grow into their leadership. The only exception was Forever Red, because Jason is a little bit of a control freak. He's the oldest Red, it's his right
When a Ranger is in a battle that forces them into demorph (i.e.: Gia, Jake, and Noah (Megaforce) against Creepox) the other teammates will be supremely worried and clingy, this is because of a trauma bond each team shares, but also because seeing someone you love get so hurt in a battle that they lose their ability to hold their morphs is fucking terrifying.
On that note, other Ranger teams will check in after those battles because seeing your successors get demorphed in the middle of battle is also something terrifying
Also on that note, some Rangers have specific nightmares in which they don't make it out of those demorph fights alive
The TMNT do on occasion pop out of the New York sewers to assist in a battle or two with the Ranger teams
Rangers who have martial arts skills (Ninja Storm, Jungle Fury, Samurai, Ninja Steel, etc) stick together, much like Rangers who are from or went to space
The techs of the teams have secret channels that they use to make "communication devices" (cell phones) so that Rangers don't have to rely on their morphers to communicate as well as being able to communicate with other Rangers and teams
Bulk and Skull have been linked so tightly with the Rangers that they've been kidnapped several times, only to be let go when it's been clear they aren't Rangers themselves
Junior Rangers have a chat, kids that helped Rangers (Heather, Jordon, etc.) have linked up and compared notes. They know of or know each other and most of them are tightly linked together
Possibility of more later, I didn't expect more than one post lol

ROTTMNT Theory: Leonardo's Face
Tumblr media
(I know this topic had been talked about in other posts before. I had a mighty need to add my 2 cents, along with some pictures.)
We know Leo's gonna grow to be an amazing leader. He's already learning how to work in groups and communicate with his team, and he's even beginning to reel back his prideful behavior.
However, to live by the important life lesson of "we do we", I get the feeling he's not gonna do it the same way as past TMNT iterations. Future Leo in the ROTTMNT movie is proof enough that his humorous quips are here to stay, even after decades of apocalyptic horrors.
Because Leo's right, he IS the face man. He just hasn't realized yet how crucial the face of a team is, or how great of a weapon it can be.
(Show and movie spoilers under the cut.)
Firstly, the face is an important tool for navigating the world around you. It's where three (four counting the ears) of the body's senses are placed. Sure, you can technically live and roam through touch alone, but then you risk missing a lot of information about your surroundings that could impact your life.
Metaphorically speaking, Leo provides this for his team the most often. He uses his highly attuned senses to scan their environment for immediate details. This allows him to adjust their plans to even the slightest changes, or to make quicker deductions based on whatever clues he finds.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another thing about faces is how prominently they're used for communication. They are one of the most critical tools for social interactions of all kinds, including deception. Mastery of facial gestures is what lets so many actors/actresses thrive when putting on believable performances.
Continuing the metaphor, Leo has proven himself to be a master of persuasion so many times throughout the Rise series. His easygoing charm can make him both motivating for loved ones and easy to underestimate for opponents.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Once Leo's self confidence improves some more, his social intelligence gives him the potential to become terrifyingly powerful. The ability to outwit geniuses by thinking outside the box. Negotiation skills that could put the average politician to shame. Eyes as sharp as his katanas, ones that could read people like comic books. An equally sharp tongue able to flip entire situations in his team's favor through words alone.
Next to hope, Leo's face truly is his most dangerous weapon. He just needs to learn how to not let it control him. I'd love to see Leo further develop this more charismatic style of leadership that tends to set him apart from his past series' counterparts.

Raphael (TMNT 2014/2016)- Oneshot
Tumblr media
No one told you that crushing on someone would hit this hard.
When it started it was purely because of your love for the arts. You always wanted to learn to fight. But your parents were protective. To them you were a delicate flower. You grew up a pretty sickly child. So when you were finally deemed a healthy individual, it was a life changer. You no longer had to limit activity or watch all the other kids run around as you stared from the sidelines.
But they were still constantly worried.
That’s why when you met the turtles, of course you never said a word to them. If your parents knew that there were large mutant ninja turtles out there, surely they would never let you leave home.
New York was messed up enough.
The second you realized that these crime fighters were experts in self defense and awesome butt kicking, you basically begged them to help you learn. After your constant pestering, Leo finally gave in. Splinter was sort of happy to have a new little apprentice. It had been a while since he was able to really teach. His sons have grown into incredible fighters.
Excelled.
So for your first day of training, you were decked down in shorts and a t- shirt, ready for anything.
“Remember Raph she’s a beginner so you have to-”
Raph kicked your feet from under you, and you tumbled with a grunt. He just smirked.
“Gotta be ready for anything.”
“Raph!!” Leo protested.
He should have known better than to expect Raph of all people to be a patient teacher. You pulled yourself to your feet, this time ready for anything he was about to dish out.
Since today was Raph’s to teach you, the others were told to look on and give pointers where needed. By the end of the session, you were sore in places you didn’t even think possible. You had a test to study for this week that you had an inkling feeling you would need to cram for because there was no way you would be able to even pick up a book when you got home.
Leo had given you pointers on improvements, Mikey flashed a grin giving you a pat on the back. Donnie slipped you some books to study on to help with technique and form. They’d all pretty much dispersed to enjoy the rest of the day until patrol. As you were packing, Raph was at the side removing his gloves. He caught the slight wince you made as you bent to lift your bag. You caught his stare from the side, and you played it off, straightening the best you could without looking like you were in pain.
“Today was a piece of cake.” You boasted.
Raph grinned.
“I knew ya were tough.”
You turn to him. This was possibly the first time someone had said that to you.
“Leo’s big on taking it easy but sometimes ya need a push. Guess ya aint that weak for a girl.”
He was still wearing that overconfident smile. You knew he was teasing. But it was flattering. Although he was basically taunting you, he believed that you had the ability to handle it. He wasn’t overly harsh today either. He’d applied just enough force that you had to put in effort to retaliate every attack.
“Don’t get ya butt kicked tomorrow.”
He tossed you an ice pack that you caught clumsily, looking at his retreating figure.
Maybe that was the first time that you knew you had a crush on the hot tempered male.
Your sessions continued.
The first few months were brutal. Because of all the inactivity as a child, it felt like you had to fight even harder to catch up physically. But you made it. In the span of eight months, you were just as skilled as the boys. Of course lacking the inhumane strength and crazy awesome build. But you were there.
You were strong. It was a bit comical that your parents had not caught on. When your mother noticed the tone in your biceps, you’d merely told her you were in the gym to stay fit to prevent any issues for the future. She ate it up, so you were in the clear.
Meeting the boys was quite honestly the best thing to happen in your life. You were also very happy to see a certain muscular mutant on a daily basis.
Later that afternoon you were expecting Raph.
You were always happy that your parents finally agreed to let you live on your own. You loved that they cared so much, but you spent too much of your life being treated like a glass that would break at any moment. You sat at the window, waiting for Raph to just swing in. You were honestly a bit happy he hadn’t caught on to your feelings.
If he did, you were scared that these days would somehow just vanish.
“Daydreaming again.”
You lifted your head, and he was just casually standing on your fire escape.
“How do you keep doing that? I didn’t even hear you jump down.”
“Ninja.”
“Of course.”
You stood to raise the window a bit higher so he could climb in, but there was a knock on your door and you stumbled. You grabbed the curtains.
“Don't make a sound.” You said to Raph, shutting the curtains hurriedly.
“Coming!”
You raced to the door. Not even surprised when your mother was on the other side.
“Hi sweetheart.”
She didn’t even wait for you to invite her in and you closed the door with a sigh.
“Are you eating well, taking your vitamins? You know how important that is.”
“I am mom.”
“Don’t give me that look. You know how hard it was for us when you were younger. Being that sick all the time, it was terrifying. I just want to make sure you’re alright.”
“I know, I know. I promise you I’m okay. I’m as fit as a horse.” You flexed for good measure and she laughed.
“Well that’s good. I just came by to drop some things. Your father has been doing a bit of spring cleaning. “ She placed the bag down, giving your apartment one more look. “
“If you ever get lonely just let me know. Ms. Laine has two handsome boys that would love to-”
“Bye mom!!”
“Okay, okay, I can tell when I’m not wanted.”
Leaving a kiss on your forehead, she waved, shuffling out the door. You placed your head on the door with a heavy sigh. At this point you shouldn’t even be surprised that she’s playing matchmaker.
“Ya mom sounds fun.”
You jumped at his voice, turning and sending him a glare.
“Don’t do that!
He just grinned, moving back to the window, fixing the curtains that had gotten blown around when he stepped in.
“Ya used to be sick?”
It’s a question that lacks the typical Raph teasing tone.
Of course he heard.
Now that the cat was out of the bag, you had no choice but to tell him.
“I had a heart condition. Doctors said I wouldn’t live to see fifteen. My parents were scared every time they looked at me. When I finally got the transplant I thought I would feel normal but they are just more overprotective. When I started college last fall I had a little more freedom. I wanted a chance to prove that I wasn’t weak. Then I met you guys.”
You smile as you both stare out at the sunset from your spot next to the window. You climb up, sitting there comfortably. Raph moves to your side, doing the same.
“You were the first person who ever told me that I wasn’t weak. Who never looked at me like I was some kind of fragile glass. You believed in me.” Your eyes shift to Raph’s and he takes in the way your eyes sort of sparkle.
“Thank you for believing in me.”
He looked down after a few heated seconds.
“Don’t go getting soft.” He grumbled.
It was cute how bashful he was being.
As you both sat on the window sill, your eyes shifted to his hand. This was possibly the closest you’d been to him with just the two of you outside of training. Swallowing your doubt, you reached over slowly, placing your hand over his. You could feel yourself blushing, and Raph became tense at the touch. Your heart was hammering against your chest. If you could take a million harsh tumble for eight months, you could tell the person you were crushing on how you felt.
“I..like you Raph..”
It was barely above a whisper.
Raph just stared for a while.
He shook it off.
“What, like ya got a crush on me.”
He let out a laugh as if he didn’t really believe you and your face scrunched up in irritation.
“D-Don’t laugh, I'm being serious!!”
He shook his head.
“Come on, quit messing with me.”
He pulled his hand away and nudged your shoulder. Your frown deepened, and you turned, jumping back into your bedroom. When you were safely inside, you shoved Raph out the window. He let out a yell, grabbing the edge just in time before he took a tumble. It wasn’t that bad a fall. You knew that.
“What's the big idea!!”
He pulled himself up the ledge with one hand, climbing inside.
“G-Get out I don’t want to see your stupid face!!”
“What the hell are you so mad about!”
“I poured out my feelings and you sat there and laughed at me!!”
He had to admit, your pouty face was cute.
“Stupid jerk.” You grumbled.
From your expression, he knows you’re upset. So he decides against teasing again and he just asks this time.
“Ya really mean it.”
“Of course I did, do you think I would just say something like that?”
You were mad, but when you look at his expression, that seems to deflate. His expression added to a steady increase of your heart rate. He took one step, and you could have sworn you almost stopped breathing.
“Ya sure ya know what you’re getting yourself into.”
You swallow.
It appears you did not.
“I-I’m not scared of you, remember. We’re equals.”
You’re far from equal.
Raph has crazy mutagen running through his veins.
“We are.” His words surprise you.
“I know I got a clear advantage, but ya strong. Don’t forget that.”
You can’t believe it. He’s actually praising someone other than himself.
“Are you sure you’re feeling okay?”
“Just take the compliment!!”
You smile.
“Thanks Raph.”
He turns with a grumble.
“Whatever.”
This crush might be a work in progress.

hello beautiful person, I have a question, do you know in which part of the tmnt series does leo medical skills appear?
Aww you're so sweet! That is an excellent question! One that I actually had to ask some friends for help with haha!
So I know that "Medic Leo" is a common headcanon, despite it never really appearing much in the shows/comics themselves, but we were able to hash together some examples seen throughout the franchise:
Mirage Comics:
Is seen patching up Mikey here in issue #4
Tumblr media
based on the dialogue, he knows how to administer stitches
also seems to be a terrible patient himself, since he gives April some trouble when she tries to help patch up his wounds
Rise of the TMNT:
minor examples
tends to ask the others if they are ok physically; including asking Raph if he's "getting enough iron"
has pouches - maybe holds first aid supplies? Who knows?
TMNT 2012
knows CPR
wanted to look at Karai's burn
patched up Mikey's head at one point
knows the "healing hands" technique (learned from Splinter)
And that's all that my friends and I were able to find. In most incarnations, including the ones mentioned above, the turtles are often seen patching up each other fairly equally. Though we agreed that 2012 Leo has the most instances of playing the role of the "medic" and even gains minor mystical abilities to help heal people.

Addendum to Donnie's Fight Style Analysis
I'VE BEEN INSPIRED. Okay, okay, know it's been over four months since my last analysis post, but life got really crazy and I had to deal with some major stuff and a huge loss of motivation afterward. However, after getting into LMK again, I finally felt motivated to properly come back to these and finish a few posts I've had in the works for ages. Admittedly, this is not one of them.
This is a minor continuation of my original Fight Style Analysis post for Donnie. This is something that occurred to me some time after completing it, but I figured I'd talk about it because I do think it is worth mentioning. Just as with the previous analyses, there is a bit of a TL;DR at the end because WHOO this ended up way longer than I thought it would.
[Donnie Fight Style Analysis]
~-~-~-~
Tumblr media
A little bit ago, I decided to go through Rottmnt again, just for fun, but upon getting to the final couple of episodes and the movie there was something about Donnie's fight style that really started to bug me. I couldn't place it at first, but about a week ago I realized what it was.
Donnie does not appear to improve his fight style by the end of the show.
Let me explain:
As I stated in my original analysis, Rise of the TMNT is generally pretty good about demonstrating the growth of the characters' abilities over the course of the show (and movie). It uses its composition, animation, and choreography to increase the complexity of fight scenes, not only making them more exciting and entertaining but to show how the skills of the characters improve to allow for these more complex fights. Rise also shows the growth in characters' abilities this in a more explicit way by providing the audience with a specific focal point for comparing the eventual growth of each character's skills.
In "The Shadow of Evil" Splinter verbally states the deficiencies of each turtle's fighting abilities - Leo's is cockiness and arrogance, Raph's is impulsiveness, Mikey's is inexperience and ignoring fundamentals in favor of flourish, while Donnie's is his reliance on tech. They are deliberately telling us, the audience, what exactly to look for as we watch the fights and to compare how they fight at the start of the show versus the end.
Tumblr media
For the most part, Rise seems to make good on that source of comparison. Leo is less cocky and arrogant in fights, Raph doesn't rush in as much, and Mikey is a bit more practical in his movements and attacks (although he still has his razzmatazz).
Donnie, however, doesn't seem to get the same treatment. Yes, he very clearly improves as a fighter, but his fundamental weakness remains unchanged and unaddressed. He still relies heavily on his tech by the end of the show, arguably even more after he gets his Ninpo (for the sake of clarity, yes, his mystic tech counts in this as well - it serves the same purpose). In the finale and in the movie, he's constantly using his mystic constructs in fights, with the show even portraying this as something cool and victorious.
Tumblr media
THIS FRUSTRATED THE HELL OUT OF ME. If everyone else displays noticeable growth in overcoming their weaknesses in fights, how did they stumble so hard on Donnie's character? Why was Donnie the exception? I must have missed something.
Yeah. I did.
Donnie's fight style does improve over the course of the show, it just develops in a more subtle way.
The show claims, as stated by Splinter, that Donnie's greatest weakness in a fight is his reliance on tech ("Do not rely on your tech, funny one"), but that statement isn't quite right.
Tumblr media
Splinter's words in this scene give a supposed indication as to the way Donnie's fighting style will improve by the end of the show. By stating that Donnie should not rely on his tech, the audience expects that, by the finale, Donnie won't use his tech as much and will become a much better fighter through traditional techniques. However, that doesn't happen, with Donnie still using his tech as a fundamental part of his fight style in both the final episode and the movie. This is why it appears that Donnie doesn't develop his fighting skill much throughout the show when this couldn't be further from the truth.
The phrasing used here is misleading. A better way to describe Donnie's weakness is that he uses his tech improperly in battle.
When stated in this way, is easier to see how Donnie improves his fighting by the end of Rise. It shifts the audience's expectations as to the trajectory of Donnie's growth as a fighter and provides a better point of comparison for how his fight style changes.
At the start of the show, Donnie uses his tech as a crutch, a fallback when he thinks traditional techniques won't work. There are several instances in season one and early season two where Donnie relied on his tech instead of utilizing traditional techniques (Yes, I see you "Many Unhappy Returns"). This can be a critical mistake as it changes up his attack pattern (ahem, Glass Cannon) and it leads to him losing the advantage in a fight. THIS is Donnie's biggest weakness when fighting - not the fact that he simply uses his tech in battle.
With this perspective, Donnie absolutely improves and grows, just as his brothers do. Instead of reducing his reliance on his tech, as the show's phrasing implies he should, he adjusts the way he uses his tech by applying it more effectively and strategically. He stops relying on it as a fallback and begins using his tech in ways that fit the situation and limits his vulnerability. In the last few episodes of the show, Donnie tends to keep his distance when he needs to use his tech and waits for a better opportunity to attack, instead of just using it because he can (except for his hammer, which makes sense since it's intended for melee combat). In the final fight with Shredder, Donnie keeps his distance from him after attempting an initial hit with his bo. Once realizing he can work off of Shredder's arrogance ("You think your puny mystic weapon can harm me?") that's when he uses his tech and lands a stronger blow. It's a more strategic and calculated use of his drill than what he would have done (or did) at even the start of season 2.
Tumblr media
The same applies to the fight with Krang in/outside the Technodrome. Donnie uses his mystic construct to fire a barrage at the Krang from a distance so that he doesn't put himself at risk with the absence of his battleshell.
Tumblr media
Donnie's tech is a deeply ingrained part of his character. It's his passion, his source of expression, and his legacy. Heck, he already wears a tech shell every day and in nearly every battle. To separate the tech from the turtle, especially in a fight, would be doing the character a huge disservice, and Rise does seem to recognize that. They even emphasize this in End Game when Splinter regrets dismissing their unique strengths which, in this case, would be Donnie's tech.
Tumblr media
While perhaps poorly stated within the show itself, they clearly do not make an effort to reduce Donnie's usage of tech in battle (again, Insane in the Mama Train aside), instead demonstrating the growth of his fighting style through the more subtle applications of his tech.
~-~-~-~
[TL;DR: The show deliberately states the weaknesses each turtle has in battle in "The Shadow of Evil" and, while Leo, Raph, and Mikey all have notable improvement in overcoming those weaknesses, Donnie doesn't appear to. The show suggests that Donnie's weakness in battle is in his reliance on tech, making it seem that his fight style doesn't improve as much since he uses his tech from the start to the end of the show. However, Donnie does actually improve in his fighting style throughout the show as his growth as a fighter is actually dependent on how Donnie uses his tech, instead of reducing his reliance on it altogether.]
~-~
There's a strong chance I'm simply reiterating things other people have long since noticed, but this was something I felt could have, or should have, been addressed to some degree in my original analysis. I'm ashamed that I missed this in my initial observations because this feeds into a crucial part of Donnie's character, that being his confidence in his tech and the arrogance that comes with that. I feel like it is important to mention these sorts of changes in the way each character fights in order to fully understand what it is about the action and fight scenes in Rise that make it so special.
There are a few other things I do want to cover, but because of how spotty my motivation and schedule have been, I make no guarantees as to how long it will take. Sorry about that. I hope people find this interesting, at the very least, because I really do enjoy making these silly little things.

He uses a ankylosaurus skull and other dinosaur parts as his battle shell and protective gear while hunting
Stone’
His concept is meant to emphasize Donnie’s other strengths beyond technology— such as his Superintelligence, his close-combat fighting skills, and ability to communicate with other creatures (as shown in the Todd Scouts episode)
He and his brothers tame a triceratops and name him Zog, who was both a pet and steed
For one reason or another… Donatello is the last turtle standing
However, due to classic Hamato shenanigans— ‘Dino’tello might not find himself alone for too long 👀👀👀

So here are my ALTA hc for 2003 tmnt:
Warning I get controversial
Leo: Fire
Explanation- Leo is driven by his ultimate goal of protecting his family. His training and dedication to his role as leader shows that. His will is strong and is ultimately what pulls him through.
Donnie: Air
Explanation- PUT THE FRUIT DOWN THIS ISN’T EVEN THE ‘BAD’ ONE. Iroh once said that air is the element of freedom, and what embodies freedom better than Donnie? He’s an inventor and he’s always the first one to fight for freedom (SAINW, the Kirby episode etc). Also he’s funny.
Raph: Earth(possibly Fire)
Explanation- I debated this one a lot because putting him as fire along side Leo would be great to look at how their personalities and goals mirror each other (both will driven) even if they think differently. But Raph is incredibly strong and that trait should be given it’s due. He’s the most emotional one anger is a secondary emotion it comes from something. And being able to weather those strong emotions his whole life? That takes strength. Plus he’s stubborn. Never gives up for good and ill (read: petty arguments).
Okay so here’s where I’m probably going to lose everyone.
Mikey: None
Wait!!
I went over and over in my brain and no bending style really makes sense for Mikey. 2003 Mikey’s strength lies in his natural talent for martial arts and fighting improv (a super high level skill most people struggle with). While in Rise they pivoted to having Mikey be the most naturally talented with Ninpo that doesn’t fit 2003 Mikey’s character,
He’s fun loving but he’s perceptive able to see what Leo’s responsibilities must weigh like on his brother’s shoulders. The ability to bend would not make Mikey a better fighter. In many ways I think the reliance on it would make him worse off. And he doesn’t really fit the bill for any of the elements.
And oh my fucking god he’d probably learn chi blocking and further the practice why did it take me so long to think about that.

I'm still sick so be subjected to my sick ramblings.
I find it super smart of Rise to have Leon not be the leader and no longer the eldest. All throughout the series, Leonardo is always that one turtle who's the "leader" "Big brother" the one who will do anything for his brothers.
I remember some criticism about tmnt is that Leonardo is kind of bland in a way. That his entire personality seems to revolve around being the leader and what he can do for his brothers. That isn't the case of course, he's more than that. Bit you get my drif.
Rise made a big brain move and shuffled the dynamics. They made Raphael the oldest and biggest. His core personality is still there, anger issues and stuff, but it is redirected and reshaped into worry for his brothers.
Without being the leader, Leonardo is free to be himself. To grow in a way that he wasn't able to, no longer saddled with the label of "leader"
But then Leonardo has self worth issues.
"I'm nothing without them!" Leo had said to Hueso.
Leonardo does not have a label attached to him. He has no responsibilities or expectations put on his shoulders. He's allowed to goof off and play around, although he does take it too far sometimes.
But at the same time, when compared to the rest of his brothers, Leonardo doesn't seem to have any special qualities that immediately jump up. Other than being loud, funny, and flamboyant, there's not much else. Even then, Leonardo puts that up as a facade to hide what he himself already knows. That compared to his brothers, he's nothing special.
I think it's a smart way to tackle Leonardo's identity crisis. For a character who's been saddled with the label of "leader" for so long, when you remove that, what do you have? What makes Leonardo special? What makes him stand out amongst his brothers?
He's not super strong like Raph. He's not super smart like Donnie. He's not super bright and optimistic like Mikey (With the inate ability to befriend villains and reform them).
He's not the oldest. He's not the most skilled. He's not the responsible one. So what is he?
Leonardo now has to tackle the question of "who am I?" Without the label attached to him. I think it's smart. Because now, Leonardo can be himself. He just needs space to make his own identity, not conform into a mold already made for him.
Rise completely reshuffles so many dynamics and made them anew, with fresh perspective and explorations.

Hey, Wait a Minute.... Where's Claire?
@littlemissartemisia @tmntaucompetition
Prev || Next
Claire paced angrily back and forth as she waited. Patience was not her strongest attribute.
Where was he? He wasn't the type to be late. Maybe it was her. Maybe it was this place. Time didn't seem to exist in this arena... or at the very least, it didn't flow properly. It was a bit screwy in this dimension. It wasn't as if there was a son or moon or stars to measure the passage of time! There were some clocks, but those were more like general estimations than actual time-telling. One minute could pass in your home dimension, and it would have been a full week here. Or, one hour could go by here and it would have been a month on the outside. One end of the compound could move faster than the other. It was all relative, fluctuating, and nothing seemed scientifically plausible. So, while her wristwatch said that she'd sent the message and invitation to the TMNT AU Competitions to Baron Draxum only a few hours ago, it felt like it had actually been weeks!
A pink and magenta portal suddenly appeared a few feet away from her. Finally, he was here.
Draxum slowly stepped through, his gargoyles perched atop his shoulders as he looked around, scanning the compounds with a mix of caution and curiosity.
"How interesting..." he murmured.
"Glad to see you finally made it," Claire grumbled, crossing her arms.
"I wasn't sure the coordinates you gave me were correct, they didn't lead to anywhere on our plane of existence," Draxum noted. "But after some thorough examination, I saw that there was a pocket universe hidden within the destination. After that, it was simply a matter of finding the correct potions and spells to infiltrate without being seen, as per your instructions."
"Took you long enough. But I'm glad you're here," she said. "We have work to do."
"So I gathered from your message. You said that the subject is here?"
"Not just her," Claire said with a wicked grin. "This whole place is filled with variants of your original experiments! And even more! There are even some that were actually raised by their universe's version of you."
"Really? Hmm. I should like to see that..." Draxum said, grinning as he considered what these variants would look like. They must be the most effective warriors, strong and able-bodied and fearsome and cutthroat.
"Ooh, I wonder what Draxum would be like as a father," Huginn chuckled. "I'm sure he would be loving and caring as always!"
"You'll probably see soon enough," Claire noted. "But first, our plans."
"You didn't say much in your message. Crypticity does not become you," Draxum said, gritting his teeth. "I don't think I need to remind you that I dislike being summoned as though I were some resource you can play with when it suits you. I am a busy Yokai, Claire. You and your little Artemisia are not the only mutant turtles I am preoccupied with."
"I know, but this will be worth your while!" she promised, her voice raising in excitement.
"Prove it."
"How would you like to have not one, but FIVE experiments?"
"Five?" Draxum repeated, unsure if she was jesting or being serious.
"Misa is travelling with an alternate version of the teenage mutant ninja turtles that you created all those years ago. They are essentially the same, with the same genetics and similar traits as yours. And most of them have been reverted back to their early childhood, which means they would be extremely pliable and easy for you to manipulate, while also being just old enough to understand orders and be capable minions!"
"And you couldn't capture them on your own? Five little toddlers?" Draxum huffed. "I wonder if I should be disgusted by your lack of skill, or impressed by their abilities."
"Do not blame her, they are not alone," said a voice from behind Claire's head.
The Hand.PNG slowly crawled around, perching itself on her shoulder, almost mimicking Huginn and Muninn, who recoiled in disgust at the thing.
"The turtle tots are traveling with three young adults. They shall not be easy to defeat, mind you. But you may leave that to me."
"And who exactly are you?" Draxum questioned.
"This is the hand I wrote you about; it told me how to capture the specimens," Claire explained quickly.
"And why would it do that?" he growled, sensing some ulterior motive within the disembodied appendage. "What would you have to gain?"
"I have nothing to gain, expect the fulfilment of my purpose."
"What purpose is that? Are you some enemy of the turtles, that you would want to see them captured by me?" Draxum challenged.
"I am not their enemy, though most would think of me as such. I am a prompter, my purpose is to continue the story, to get it moving, keep it flowing. For the time being, that means assisting you in capturing Misa and the turtle tots. Now, I must go..."
"Go?" Draxum questioned, still unsure of the hand's motives.
"Yes. As of right now, the odds are not in your favour. I must set this right. By tomorrow, you shall have the upper hand. Ahem, so to speak. All I need do is change the perspective of one particular player in this act, and the scene shall be set."
The Hand.PNG jumped down from Claire's shoulders and skittered away.
"...I don't trust it," Draxum growled low.
"I don't either. When I first met it, the Hand said something about how it didn't want to hurt Misa, but would let me do it. I'm not sure what goal it's working towards... but I can't see any reason for it to betray us," Claire explained. "For the moment, it seems to be on our side. I say we wait a bit before killing off the golden goose, hm?"
"Fair enough," Draxum sighed. "But you still have yet to tell me why I am here."
"Oh, right! Well, these variants that Artemisia is travelling with? One of them is named 'Donatello Von Draxum', sound familiar? Apparently he was raised by you in his world, and until just recently, he was your loyal little soldier. And that's where you come in..."
Claire continued to explain the plot that she'd been given, as the Hand.PNG followed it's favourite playthings to their rooms... its new story unfolding, its plan coming together.
Although, it had not been completely honest with them... yes, it had plans for Donatello, but there was one other person whose perspective it planned to change...
