Rapheal (TMNT 2014/2016) - Chapter 2

"Pass the remote."

"Nu uh it's my turn!"

Raph doesn't even argue further. He grabs it out of Mikey's hands, plopping on the couch. Mikey means to fire an insult, or grab it back, but Leo stops him, shaking his head. Mikey is confused, until he sees the news channel turned on.

"Suspects in the Lauderdale bombing have been apprehended. Sources say they were also responsible for the smuggling of illegal firearms and drugs. More when we come back."

The room becomes quiet, and Raph grips the remote.

"Apprehended is better than they deserved." Raph grumbles.

"We talked about this Raph, we don't take the law into our own hands. We just catch them, that's it."

"Yea, why didn't ya say that to (Y/N). Does she deserve to die to protect scumbags like that!!"

"She's not dead!!"

"She might as well be." Raph looked down. "You heard what Vincent said."

"She told us there is a high possibility she could regain consciousness."

"False hope." Raph concludes. He clenched his hand, and the remote was crushed under the force. He dropped the controller in disdain.

"I'm going for a walk." Splinter walked out just when he heard the argument start. He stepped in front of Raph, placing his hand on Raph's shoulder.

"Be patient son. She will wake up."

Raph shrugged off the arm, moving to the side.

He knew it was unfair taking it out on them. But he wasn't sure who to blame. His mind would not give him the comfort of forgetting that look on your face. You had given up in those last moments. Using every bit of your strength to get April out rather than trying to free yourself. He stopped, punching the wall, a fairly large hole following. The concrete crumbled, and he snarled.

"This is my fault."

Why the hell did they even separate. They were dealing with psychotic criminals. He kept trudging on, and as he climbed through a manhole and made his way to the surface. The city lights hit his eyes. He scaled up the building. The higher he got, the more a feeling of nostalgia hit. He stopped when he was on a rooftop, and the sight of the sun setting just at the tip of the bridge felt familiar.

"Did you fight with Leo again."

"I aint wanna talk about it. "

"Okay."

Raph expected you to delve further, but you sat down right next to him, eyes staring ahead. He frowned.

"Ya tryna use some mind game on me." You shook your head.

"No. You said you didn't want to talk about it. So we won't. We can just sit here and look at the sunset."

Raph faced forward.

"Leo put you up to this." He grumbles.

"Nope. Came here all on my own. " He scoffed.

"Sure you did."

This time, you looked at him. As much defiance that Raph often presented, you sort of respected him. He wasn't someone who just caved. He stood up for himself. He wasn't afraid to say what was on his mind. Regardless of what anyone thought. Reaching over, you placed your hand on his shoulder. His body tensed.

"I'm sorry that you feel like your voice isn't heard. I know Sometimes it may seem like Leo is favored, but Master Splinter loves you all just the same. In a way I guess I can relate."

Raph was listening now.

"My dad used to be pretty tough on me. For a while I thought it was because he hated me. After that car accident it was like a switch flipped. He was always pushing, always lecturing and I felt like I was the only one getting the brunt of it. My older brothers were never lectured. They were the ones who followed the rules. I was the rebel. "

"Can't really picture ya being a rebel." He voiced. You sent him a smile.

"My early teens were a mess." Raph smiles, and you giggle. It seems like you're getting through to him. So you continue.

"After a few months I finally confronted him. I threatened to run away and he..he sort of broke down. The entire time he was just scared of losing me. When I got in the accident, I brushed it off. I took life for granted, but my dad was terrified. Because when he got the call, he thought that I'd died. For a brief moment he told me that he imagined what it was like to never see me again. It almost broke him. So when he got the full report and saw me in that hospital, I guess he made a promise to himself that he wouldn't make the same mistakes. "

Your hand moves from his shoulder, to the center of his chest. Raph eyes trail the movement.

"Sometimes when we care about people, we make bad choices doing what we think is right for them. It doesn't mean the love isn't there. It just means they care more than we can realize. If you ever doubt anything, please don't forget that."

Raph couldn't truly remember the last time he'd been speechless. He wishes he could say something, anything. Even a thank you. You pull your hand away with a tender smile, and just then his heart begins to strum unsteadily.

It's possible that's when he realized.

Raph clenches his fists.

More than anything, it hurts.

There's a vibration in his pocket, and he means to ignore it. Eventually Leo would give up. For a moment it stops. He can feel the peace. But it starts again. With each ring he can feel his agitation rising. He grits his teeth, pulling out the phone in aggravation.

"WHAT!!"

"Raph...she's awake."

Leo receives no reply on the other side.

Man, what I'd do for a nice large pepperoni pizza right about now… Michelangelo smiled at the thought of the delicious masterpiece. "Uh," Mikey smiled weakly, accepting his brother's hand as he lifted him up. "Just today or this week? Cause' if it was today I think it's about...the third? And if was the week well I really wasn't thinking of keeping score of-!"

"Oh come on, Raph! That was totally uncalled for!"

"What now?" Leonardo mumbled to himself as he rubbed his forehead. Lately all of his brothers have been a source of both migraines and ulcers. He shook his head as he stormed over to his brothers. Stopping in his tracks, he turned around and said, "You stay here, Mike."

Karai has been awfully quiet for the past few months, the Purple Dragons haven't made any big moves, and the Foot has yet to steep out on the streets since the fall of the Shredder. The pressure of danger popping up, maybe even stronger, at any point pushed Splinter to train his sons much harder. Of course, Leo took Splinter's intentions to heart. Maybe a little too hard, for Leo's sake!

If he were human, he was sure that his oldest brother would have a hair full of grey hair at this point.

Uh-oh! Leo looks even more ticked off than usual! Maybe if I just sneak past using my Battle Nexus Champion ninja skills… Michelangelo watched Leo turn to face the other side of the dojo where Raphael had Donatello in a headlock, shouting something about winning fair and square. Smiling to himself, he took complete full advantage of his situation. Tip-Toeing his way toward the door of the dojo, Mikey could hear Leo and Raph bickering over Don's cries to be released. This was his big break-!

Making a sprint to his bedroom, Michelangelo can't help but embrace the adrenaline rush that consumed him. Pushing himself to run as fast as he could, he finally reached his bedroom door. Shutting it behind him, he sighed of relief. Ha! Made it out alive! Go Mikey, go Mikey! Go! Go!

A loud knocking echoing outside his door interrupted his exhilaration. Oh, Shell. "Michelangelo!" Leonardo was back again for the kill -this time, his voice full blown with authority. "Your training is over when I say so! Get out here right now and finish!"

"Geez, Leo, calm your katanas." Lowering his head in defeat, Mikey opened his door. Before Mikey could plea to his big brother, Leo slapped his brother across the side of his head. Before Mikey could cry out, he suddenly felt his arm being dragged out of his room and down back to the dojo.

"Aw, come on, Leo!" Mikey cried, (failingly) attempting to get out of his brother's grasp. "I'm sorry! Next time I-!"

"This won't happen again." Leo said sternly, giving him a shove into the dojo. Inside, Raph and Don were already waiting. There, Don is leaning against one side of the wall, and Raph being on the other- both his older brothers pouting in their own corners.

"Alright," Leo began, clearing his throat. "Everyone's behavior has been unacceptable these past few days-."

"We don't need a lecture, Fearless." Raph grunted. "Especially from you." Mikey bit his lip to the growing tension in the small room. Lately, things weren't very peachy between him and his brothers. Hell, even Donnie is acting up!

Leo, after Splinter fell ill earlier in the month, took the role of being head of the house. As if Leo wasn't already- er- besides Master Splinter of course! In Mikey's eyes, this meant Leo's big brother's aura/lecture/talks have increased a good fifty percent. Leo has become even stricter with his brothers than usual. Sure, Leo wasn't fond of Raph going up to the surface with Casey some nights. It wasn't until recently when Leo became more persistent with Raph about his time out, with or without Casey. But it wasn't just Raph getting the wrath.

Don, being in his lab even more often than usual, has focused solely on helping Master Splinter have a speedy recovery and his usual calibrations. Master Splinter insists that he just has a simple cold, nothing for his sons to fret over. Of course, Don being his own perfectionist, convinced himself to run every test on his father as possible- just to be safe. Even Michelangelo knew that once Don was head into a project, there would be nothing to snap his head out of it until he was through. Leo, knowing how hard his brother pushes, attempts to pull his brother out of his lab and train more. More like force him to train.

"Believe it or not, I'm going to agree with Raph on this one." Don sighed. "We did everything you asked Leo, it's only morning practice. There's no need to push so hard-."

"No need?" Leo hissed, clenching his hand to his katana.

Oh, shell. Well, yup, aaaand Leo has officially cracked.

Mikey took a step back as Leo walked up to Don. Getting face to face with his younger brother, Leo said, "Karai can be out there planning a way to get back at us!"

Mikey could tell that his oldest brother was trying to hide any emotion in his voice. In a way, he always felt bad for Leo. It was very, very, rare that he'd see Leo calm down and just hang out with them. He tried to recall the last time he just joked and played with his brother. Were we 10? 12?

Leonardo looked over to the rest of his brothers as he continued on. "You think that you'll be able to fight off an entire Foot elite? You think you're strong enough to face Karai?"

"We know you aren't."

Wait; scratch that, now Leo has cracked. Oh, come on, Raph! Michelangelo slapped his forehead as Don cursed under his breath. Well, this is it. It was great knowing my brothers.

Silence fell onto the room.

Donatello stood helplessly in front of Leonardo. Leonardo's head snapped over to Raphael, still clutching his katanas tightly. Donatello placed his hand on Leo's shoulder, gripping it firmly to keep him in his place.

If Raph and Leo don't kill each other now, than the tension in this room will! I totally got to stop it-! Mikey stepped in between Raph and Leo as he put his arms outward toward each of them. Forcing his trademark grin, he coughed a chuckle, "Okay, dudes, look, we're all tired, pretty ticked off and maaaybe even hungry? Silence fell again.

Mikey darted his eyes to each of his brothers, still attempting to keep a smile. Raph, on his right, was standing firm with his arm crossed. His eyes locked onto Leo's, irritation oozing from his glare. Looking to his left, Leo had the same glance to Raph. Don stood on Leo's right, still holding Leo's shoulder for dear life. Don, being the only one who was looking at Mikey, simply shook his head. Mikey bit his lip as he desperately looked to his brother. Come on, Don! Give me a hand here!

Knowing Don, being the most peaceful one out of them, he probably won't step in until Raph and Leo pull each other's heads off. Leaving Mikey going solo.

Forcing a more cheerful smile, Mikey clapped his hands together. "Okay, then! I'll start then! Leo, bro, I'm sorry I ran off to my room to hide from your demon like wrath and for probably pissing you off even more- BUT, anyway, I am sorry! Now, Raph, apologize for being mean to Leo."

Raphael chuckled as Donatello slapped his forehead. Oops. That one was my bad.

"You're absolutely right, Michelangelo." Leo smirked, deep blue eyes beginning to grow even more intense. He forced a laugh as he continued sarcastically, "Wow! I'm sorry that I'm only just looking out for each of you. Oh, wait! I am so sorry for making you guys train harder so that when you go out in a fight, you won't come back as many times as you've all been hurt. But, I am mostly sorry for being so fatherly. I didn't think caring about my brothers' safety and protection could be so awful."

"You're so full of yourself, Fearless." Raph hissed, stepping closer to his older brother. "You think just cause' Master Splinter has a tiny cold you think you could play master! Well guess what? Yer no master-!"

Brushing Don off his shoulder, Leo stepped closer to Raph. His voice raises higher, the emotion no longer hiding. "Coming from the guy who goes out every night just to feel more tougher and stronger! How does that protect this family?"

"Stop!" Mikey cried, stepping in between his brothers. "C-Come on, guys! I know how much you guys love proving each other wrong but-!"

"Stay out of this, Mike." Raphael warned, shoving his brother to the side.

"Guys, come on." Donatello took a try at stopping his older brothers. "At this rate you two are going to wake Sensei. And he needs all the rest he can."

Ooooh the guilt card! Nicely done, Donnie! Leonardo hesitantly backed away from Raphael and nodded. "Fine. We're done for now."

"Finally!" Grabbing Raphael's arm, Mikey attempted to tug his arm toward the door. "How about we play some Resident Evil, Raph? We always make a good team-!"

"Yer leave me to die and take all the ammo," Raphael shook out of his little brother's grip, "no way in hell am I playin'."

"Aw, come on!" Mikey pleaded, watching his brother stroll to his room. And once he's in there he ain't coming out until dinner...Maybe Don will play with me!

Adrenaline rushed through him as he skipped his way to Don, who was cleaning up the dojo. "Donnie!" Mikey tackled his brother, putting his arm around Don's shoulder. "How about we play? I'll let you be the cool dude and I'll be the chick!"

Half-laughing, Don removed his brother's arm off his shoulder. "Can't, Mikey. I got to check in on Splinter and call April to pick up more medicine." Making his way out of the dojo, he looked back to his youngest brother and smiled slightly. "Maybe you could check in on Leo. You do owe him an apology, you were pretty harsh on him."

"ME?!" Mikey squeaked, raising his hands in the air. Before he could defend himself, Donatello was already gone. Sighing in defeat, Mikey slouched his back and dragged his feet back in the hallway.

Plopping himself on the floor, he leaned his shell against the wall. Pulling his knees up to his chest, he rested his head on his knees. This wasn't the first time he felt that all his brothers were completely against him. Shell, all I wanted to do was help. That's what I…always wanted to do. Why can't his brothers see past that?

I-I know I like to play jokes and act like an idiot sometimes…but don't they see that I'm not an idiot? O-Or do they really see me as just…that. No. Mikey shook off his deep thoughts and pulled himself back up on his feet. There was no way he would let his family see him this way. They'll just think he's whining again for attention.

B-But, I don't! I just…want to make things right for once.

And he knew jus where to start!

Mike quickly paced himself over to Leo's room. His door was completely shut. Biting his lip, Mikey hesitated knocking. Leo usually never keeps his door totally closed, that is, unless he wants privacy. But Donnie's right…

Mikey did his traditional knocking; knocking twice, then again three times. "Leo? Its me…can we talk for a second or are you sleeping or meditating or-."

Leonardo slowly opened the door halfway, leaning himself against the door frame. His arms crossed, he cleared his throat. His eyes finally reaching his little brother's, Mikey was taken back by the look his oldest had. He was exhausted- whether it was mentally or physically (shell, or even both) he couldn't tell.

"H-Huh?" Mikey snapped out of his dazed thoughts and looked back up at Leo. "OH- uh- look, Leo, I'm…sorry about picking on you before. I totally get how freaked out you are over this-."

"As should you." Leo cut off, his voice becoming deeper with authority. "Remember what I told you at the Battle Nexus? If one of us goes down, we all go down. You need to pick up your slack or…" His voice faded as he looked to the ground, then immediately back up. "…or we will go down too."

"What are you sayin', bro?"

"I'm saying…that if you don't stop fooling around and focus on training with me and the others, we can't trust you in a fight."

"Can't trust me?!" Michelangelo echoed, hurt piercing his voice. His brothers, brothers, believed that he'd be nothing but… "You guys think I'm just some kind of…liability to you guys…?"

"I didn't say you were one, Mikey." Leo placed his hand on his youngest shoulder. His voice becoming more comforting. "I'm saying, if you keep slacking off and not working with all of us…then yeah, you're putting us in danger too. And as the leader, I'm not putting Raph and Don in danger too."

What the shell? L-Leo really sees me as that much of a weakness that I put Raph and Donnie in trouble..?

"L-Leo, come on." Mike pleaded, starting to back away from his brother's reach. "I-I mean I joke around with you guys but, when we train I do my part and get it done! Okay, maybe sometimes I get distracted easily a-and I tick you guys off, but I work!"

"Mike!" Leo exclaimed. "Just…get your act straight. I'm not going to tell you again." And with that, Leonardo shut his door. Leaving his youngest drowning in his own brother's words…

./././././././././.

Shutting his eyes tight, he could have swore he heard his brother choke a sob. Sure, his brother was the most sensitive out of them all. And yeah, he took any criticism to heart at times, even while covering it with a joke. But he did it for the best…right?

Leonardo collapsed on his bedside, staring up at his ceiling. When did things get so crazy? Sensei…I-I don't think I can handle all of this not-.

"I trust you, my son. You know your brothers well. You will take care of them. Have faith, Leonardo. Just as I have faith in you."

His heart clenched as his father's words swam around his already filled mind. He knew Raphael was already completely fed up with him, Donatello was too stressed over Splinter's condition, and Mikey…is just in his own world.

At least there, Leonardo knew Mikey didn't have to have the burden of worrying over anything. He can just be himself, laughing, goofing off, cracking jokes, and just acting like things were just the same as they were.

He needs to realize the truth…

Even if it hurts him.

Tips on backgrounds?

This isn't the first ask I've gotten on this topic so I'm going to start off by saying simply, I am not a master on backgrounds. Hell, I am still learning. 

However, I can tell you guys what has helped me along the way and what a turning point for me with environments was. The biggest ground shaking moment was realizing a simple phrase that most will have heard me say in my streams if you’ve hung around long enough. 

'Treat your backgrounds as if they were a character'

Backgrounds are scary, there is no way around that fact. They’re complex, spiraling and often times its hard to find out where to start with it. The first question you got to ask yourself is ‘what do I want to show?’ There is no point investing all that time into it without a purpose, what is this scenes personality? 

I don’t use the word personality without intention. Just as a character speaking can display a personality, so can an environment. Here are three examples:

Batman and Superman, Lee Bermeio

These images have ‘personality’ you wouldn’t see TMNT styled backgrounds in a Superman and Batman comic, nor would you find a Hellboy styled image in such a wild and crazed comic like TMNT. 

These images have a life of their own, some might say that it is the style of the work itself, but the style is directly influenced by the characters. What you want to show is going to determine how it is drawn. 

TMNT original issues had this grungy scratch appeal to it utilizing lots of texture and crosshatching, it gave it this dirty feel that was appealing and matched the sewer living ninjas. 

Hellboy is very dark, a story of demons and dark arts. The style that it is best known for depicts this with clean lines, but constantly dramatic black placement. It exudes this clarity despite how much of it is left within question. I had the pleasure of seeing some original page roughs from Mike Mignola at my college, there were pages that were almost completely black except for very specific parts that he chose to illuminate. He was meticulous on what he showed and why. 

Now by far the most complex example, the painterly twists of the Batman and Superman issues done by Lee Bermio. They utilized almost consistently contrast and strong composition to make the focal points pop off to the viewer. However it is still very easy to become lost in the images. This style hits an almost uncanny valley so close to reality in its rendering but a tad off, very much Marvel stylization. 

Each of these environments are alive and match what they’re framing. They are their own character and you can learn just as much from them as you could the characters, if not more. This is why I love backgrounds. I hide so much within my pages, details that might go unnoticed but I’m aware of, because it breathes life to them. 

If you’re not sure what to add to a background look at real life. What would be in a bar if you were in one? What would be on a desk? Here’s my advice, look at your own!Think of who this desk was being used by, are they an artist? A drunk? Do they have bills? Pile pieces of the person around them, frame them and create a story with only the items that are cascaded about. Its the same thing we do when we enter someones house the first time, we judge by what we see. Big TV and lots of video games? Gamer. Dirty kitchen with underwear on the fan? Possibly party boy or slob. Lots of plants on the porch, and tapestries hanging about? Maybe a bit more hippy or has an affection to nature. You can say so much that you can’t just put into words with a simple drawing of a person. Utilize this.

Make your background a character.

It's impossibly surreal not only to officially, specifically have nude mods for FFXV PC addressed, but to hear the sentiment that once we buy a game... it's ours.  To do with as we please.  May it be a new era.

Yeah, alright, nude mods hold no interest for me.  Because we lack actual realistic dick physics and that’s distracting okay.  I'm unsurprisingly mostly in this just so I can get out of bounds whenever I want instead of having to go through these ridiculous hoops on the console version.  But sign me up for orgy camp scenes.  Also replacing MT screams with Wilhelm screams.  Let's make it happen.

...I am actually serious about that, yeah.  Pretty sure I'd need to be able to afford a new computer to run it on, though.

In any case, I've been wounded.  Was this some project-related injury?  Did the wire fight back?  Did any number of sharp implements I usually use taste blood again?  ...No, it was a paring knife.  Luckily it's not my dominant thumb or I'd be fucked for a few days (and that’s happened often enough in the past to know that for sure), but it's still near the tip and the pad and just annoying enough.  Fantastic.  (Kind of concerning that I mastered the art of putting on socks without the use of one thumb a long while ago.)  The TMNT Band-Aids only help so much.  ...But I'm currently typing with "TURTLE POWER" on my thumb and that delights me to no end.

(Mikey's my favorite.  Shut up.)

Doing clean up work right now since I finished the primaries.  Goal reached as much as possible for today, etc.  Then I figure I can take the weekend to lay face-down somewhere between meals and video games and that sounds pretty good right now.

Avengers: Infinity War

Last night was the soft opening for the 11 years in the making MCU phase/season/arc/whatever finale that is Avengers: Endgame, but today Friday, April 26th is the official opening day. Yesterday I went to a friend’s place who has a big ‘ol 4K TV and I watched my first UHD in the form of last year’s Avengers: Infinity War (trailer) as a nice refresher going into one of the biggest cinematic releases ever this weekend. I am glad I did experience it again in 4K HD because there were so many little things I forgot and so much transpiring that it made the two and a half hour runtime breeze by before I knew it. Like with my entry on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 yesterday, I will probably tiptoe into light spoiler territory for Infinity War so reader beware! Unlike the previous Avengers film, Age of Ultron, Infinity War does not kick off with the Avengers on another routine mission kicking ass. It is a polar opposite where quintessential Marvel villain Thanos (Josh Brolin), yes that same Thanos who was teased in the post-credit scenes of the previous two Avengers films has finally arrived and lays immediate waste to Heimdall (Idris Elba), Loki (Tom Hiddleston), Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) and Thor (Chris Hemsworth). It is in this opening scene where it is established Thanos is after the six Infinity Stones that were seen scattered throughout previous MCU films to gain ultimate power and use it to instantly eliminate half the world’s population. The dark nature of the opening scene foreshadowed what would be the grimmest, darkest film yet in the entire MCU. While this is a more serious, high-stakes film, there is still a fair amount of witty exchanges and zingers throughout, especially once the Guardians of the Galaxy and Spider-Man (Tom Holland) get in the mix.

Infinity War sees Thanos and his children travel to all reaches of the galaxy to acquire all six Infinity Stones. This leads to many awesome CG battles involving nearly the entire roster of the MCU sans a handful of characters who are explained why they are absent. This also leads to the fun dynamic of experiencing heroes from different films interact with each other for the first time and sometimes putting differences to the side to combat Thanos or at other times getting in a dispute of 1ups-manship in the case Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) and Thor. I will give props to the masterful MCU directors Joe & Anthony Russo for experimenting and segmenting off the traditional teams in order to see how new hero mash-ups play out on screen, and they nearly all gelled wonderfully together and resulted in a ton of awesome ‘What If’ scenarios coming to fruition on the big screen. A couple quick favorite team-up scenarios that stood out for me was early team-up scenes with Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr) and Hulk/Bruce Banner colliding with Thanos’s forces. Rocket (voiced by Bradley Cooper), ‘teenage’ Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel) and Thor venture out in their unique arc in order to find the ultimate weapons to take on Thanos in what was an odd, but fun pairing to see unfold. When we get to the final act two huge battles play out simultaneously. A huge battle on the planet, Titan unfolds with Iron Man, Spider-Man, Nebula (Karen Gillan), Peter Quill, Drax (Dave Bautista) and Doctor Strange as they attempt to combine forces in one last gasp to takedown Thanos in one-against-all war that was one of the top highlights of the film.

While the battle on Titan is happening, almost every other MCU hero imaginable teams up in Wakanda to engage in a gigantic war with Thanos’s army. This was a CG delight to consume as almost every hero no matter how big of a lead or periphery they were in past films gets a chance to shine in what is easily the biggest confrontation of any MCU film. I thought it was awesome the Russos’ gave the women time to shine where Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and Okoye (Danai Gurira) rally up against Proxima (Carrie Coon). This Wakanda War has a finale and payoff that will be one of the most memorable for not just comic book movies, but nearly all of cinema. Needless to say, JAW-DROPPING MOMENTS OF CONSEQUENCE occur from the fallout of the end of the Wakanda clash and it all builds up perfectly to get everyone primed and ready to see the follow-up to this in Avengers: Endgame. It would not be fair for me to go this whole time without one little quibble, and it is a feint one that I cannot fully get behind, but bears mentioning. This is a star-studded cast, and props for Marvel Studios for squeezing almost everyone in. Unfortunately, this expectedly has the side-effect of some standout stars getting short shrift so everyone can get a modicum of screen time. I was surprised Captain America (Chris Evans) came off as a bit player compared to others and ditto for at least several others. I still am stunned that Nick Fury (Samuel Jackson), who is a constant for many past MCU films, is only in one scene. For what it is worth it seems at least every person I felt who got slighted in screen time at least has a moment or two to have the spotlight on. It oddly reminded me of recent Wrestlemanias where WWE’s roster got to be so enormous the last couple installments went on to be nearly seven hours in order to cram almost the entire roster on the show in some way or another.

While I watched the 4K UHD at a friend’s, I made sure to pull my BluRay out of my backlog box to dive into the extra features. Coming right off GotG2, I love how Infinity War follows the same format for extra features with a making of special, gag reel, deleted scenes and a commentary track. The Marvel gag reels are always a riot, but this one clocks in short at only two minutes! The deleted scenes are worth checking out because it is the only place where Happy (Jon Favreau) makes an appearance and it is where Quill and Drax have a fun argument for control of music over Quill’s precious Zune player. There are four brief making-of specials that combine for just over a half hour. A couple of the specials that focus on the huge cast and another on Thanos feel more like extended trailers with brief interview snippets, but the back half dealing with both of the final act battles are worth checking out as the cast and crew have a lot to show in how they pieced together these huge battles on the big screen. Finally, the commentary with the Russo brothers and writers Christopher Markus and Stephan McFeely is a recommended commentary track worth your listen, or read which I will tip my hat to Marvel to for being one of the few companies out there to subtitle their commentary tracks! Commentary highlights are constant fascinating reactions to the unique hero pairings throughout, love for Brolin’s acting in his mammoth mo-cap setup, interesting insight on why the Russo’s were determined to make sure they got one specific hooded Infinity Stone protector back into the MCU and hearing all four react to the powerful scene between Gamora (Zoe Saldana) and Thanos. Other than the making-ofs being a little on the lacking side, this is another fine set of extra features from Marvel Studios.

I realize I am many weeks late to saying this, but I highly recommend giving Infinity War a viewing again before going into Avengers: Endgame. I absolutely loved this film from beginning to end, especially on this second viewing. With a year going by after seeing it in the theaters there was so much I forgot that transpired in these two and a half hours. I have not seen such a fast-paced film of at least this length since Inception. Somehow, I have managed to avoid all trailers for Endgame as I did not want a hint of what to expect out of it and I am insanely amped up to see this MCU event that has been building to this finale all the way back since 2008! If you do not have time to give Avengers: Infinity War a re-watch then I hope this entry has at least brought you back up to speed on the broad strokes of it going into Endgame. I cannot think of a better way to wrap this up by quoting what the man, Stan, would say: Excelsior! Nerd Survival Guide #1: Ballin' on a Budget

Being a nerd is a very expensive lifestyle. There are comics to be bought, movies to be seen, and video games to be played. All of these expenses add up very quickly, but there are multiple ways for us geeks to do most of the things we want to without completely emptying our wallets. While you may not be picking up the newest gear or games, you'll still manage to stay relatively up to date and in the know. Of course, there are bound to be some sacrifices but would you rather see Guardians of the Galaxy Part 2, or have Domino's Pizza for dinner? 

Trade in, Trade up.

Look, owning a dope ass collection of nerd paraphernalia is awesome but do you know what's more awesome? Being able to play, read and watch media that's still relevant. Now, you shouldn't be rushing to sell any comics or games that you still read or enjoy, but random singles and games you haven't touched in 3 months can fetch a pretty penny, especially if sold in lots. You may even be surprised by how much people are willing to pay for things like that. Make sure to actually research what you're selling, otherwise, you may not get the full value of what you're selling. After all, that Magic card may be worth upwards of $30 if you can find the right buyer. 

You should also focus on selling in the private market. It isn't as easy as simply cantering up to the counter of a Gamestop with your copy Halo 3, but you can usually score a better return on your investment. If you can undercut the used prices that stores have to offer, you'll make more money and the buyer will save more money. Everyone wins except for corporations operating with huge profit margins. You can use a ton of different resources to help you out, too. Craigslist and Facebook are definitely the largest, but websites like Ebay also still exist. If you put listings in every place you'll be able to find a buyer in no time.

Wait for the Right Moment.

So, you now have enough money from trade-ins to buy whatever the hell you want! Not so fast, Buck-O. Sure, you can dump all that cash on one anticipated thing, or you can wait a few weeks and buy multiple anticipated things. Deals are happening constantly in the nerd ecosystem. Just about every week delivers an anniversary sale where you can find heavily discounted items. Plus, just about every major retailer has season specific sales, especially when it comes to video games. Most online retailers also feature daily deals- 24-hour sales with a couple heavily discounted items. If you hold onto your cash and keep checking websites, you'll be able to find what you're looking for at a steep discount. Who doesn't want to get a life-size replica of the Master Sword for 35% off?

Stop Ordering Delivery.

This is something that I struggle with daily. It isn't an easy one to tackle, either. I order take out or fast food on an almost-daily basis. It's easy and convenient, but insanely expensive. The average delivery bill can easily reach prices of $15 per person, and that's just for the basics. Meanwhile, $15 well-spent at a grocery store can get you food for an entire day, if not two. You may not be getting the highest quality food, but it's definitely better than drive through nuggets.These meals won't be packed full of empty calories either, so you'll probably notice yourself becoming a tad bit more trim. You'll be lighter, but your wallet will be heavier.

Compete in Tournaments

No, seriously, compete in literally any tournament that you can. Comic book stores are constantly hosting competitions for things like Magic: The Gathering and video games. Even if you don't win, you'll still have an awesome time messing around with a group of like-minded individuals. Plus, if you do win, you'll likely take home some prize money or something worth a decent chunk of change. At the very least, you make some new friends. You could be making money by doing something that you love, so what are you waiting for? Hit up a local shop and see what sort of events they're planning for the future. Odds are things will be happening more frequently than you think.

So there you have it, four basic ways that you can save, or even make, a few bucks.
