thoughts from show number 13
if it’s too h-word blame @all-american-prophet for encouraging me
When Tom runs round and leans out from behind George pre-two by two, George looked down at him and smiled and waved hi 😭
Ryan as one of Kevin’s brothers ‘talking’ to Audibert by counting the travel pillows had me giggling
Tom dragging the glasses of George’s face is so funny I love-hate how much all the dad actors are ramping up their hatred for Arnold
Dom dancing a la Nic Rouleau in Hasa Diga is everything I’ve been waiting for
M-Jae dragging Dom away to hold the baby by his belt 😭😭😭 man corpsed
Rolley has nearly kissed Dom 3 times this evening what’s going on I’m so gay
He moved his hands down his body instead of holding them out to kiss him in turn it off??? let me blow u
Fuckin,,, forearm veins
im so gay he literally just called me a f4ggot
Tom looks progressively more scared as Rolley tells the Steve blade story,, homophobic Arnold era
he shouted ‘bam wham push it down’ and did a shoulder shimmy for push it down we love a camp king 💅🏻💅🏻
HE GIVES BEDROOM EYES SO HARD WHEN LEADING DOM like obvs stevie holds his hand too but bc he’s actually tall enough to make eye contact my god… mr rolley what if u held my hand like this… new bunda lengers CEO
Dom normally says ‘goodnight pal’ at the end of I am here for you but idk what happened, if he meant to say bud or whatever bc it just came out as ‘goodbye Ben’ and you saw him corpse
Rolley cocking his gay little leg up when Dom says to heck with rules lol f4g (affectionate)
Tom did the entire first half of Man Up up to when Dom enters with his trouser zip open funniest fucking thing I’ve ever seen
the interval was here but most of act 2 was spent being h-word so apologies for the lack of equal observation this is about rolley unless stated otherwise
his reactions in making things up… so camp omg stevie u might need to fight him
got picked out during hell dream my life is so fucking complete best day of my life dropping out of uni to be his footrest
DOMINUC??? LEANED IN FOR THE HELL DREAM KISS??
MY GOD HOW IS DOM DOING THE COME HERE HANDS INSTEAD OF STEPHEN UM
the was i in it is so camp stephen stop looking him up and down
when Stephen says they can leave Dom out of it and leads Tom across stage, he gave Dom such a gay bitchy look tonight purr 😻
white trousers bulge and white shirt veins return i have missed u
he looked disgusted when Jack said tribal woman w/o a bra that’s one thing I’ve always wanted stevie to do thank fuck
He was so touchy feely in pageant everyone say slay
Post pageant when they’re getting told off omg he fully looked like he was gonna burst into tears and the way he was shaking his head when Naba said they come from their sparkly lovely paradise had me writing a sad fic in my head in the middle of the show istg
Also I mostly just got a little hot at the end bc it sounded like he somehow optioned up in his little verse (also sorry to stevie but that little arm thing he does on his riff down is so him and not Connor I literally hate it)
Also took a picture of a certain slice of Mormon bundalicious cake so 💅🏻💅🏻

The West End cast of The Book of Mormon performing ‘You and Me (But Mostly Me)’, uploaded by Official London Theatre! I was so excited to find this on YouTube; Dom Simpson and Tom Xander are absolutely stellar in the roles of Elder Price and Elder Cunningham, and it’s great to see a professionally filmed performance of one of their songs.

BOM London Evening 26/11/22
Tom Xander, Ross Carpenter and Nicole-Lily Baisden's last show
After seeing the matinee I brought myself the last ticket in the stalls
Also - FOH kicked out the couple in front of me. One was drunk and dancing, waving her arms about, and they were talking loudly. He was also well over 6ft and kept moving so my short-ass self couldn't see. Luckily they left just after Hasa Diga.
The couple behind me kept talking and it proper pissed me off. They stopped once I jerked my head round and gave them passive aggressive evils.
I forgot to take a castboard pic, but Rolley was on for McKinley. Joseph Davenport and George Grayson were on as Poptarts and Schiender.
I'm really going to miss Tom. Everyone was giving it their all. Having seen Tom loads it was pretty clear he was trying not to cry as his voice was strained. But he was just wonderful
Nothing in the show was particularly different, apart from Arnold hugging Naba and Kevin longer than usual. You could see Tom was fighting back tears at certain points throughout the show.
Ross was dancing rather exaggeratedly, which was fun to see.
As Rolley was on there was more McPriceley, with McKinley caressing Price when he was passed out and in SMHD Price and McKinley getting very into eachother's personal space during SMHD.
I wish I'd brought a better ticket, but live and learn.

Just got back from the first night of the Birmingham stop on The Book of Mormon’s current UK tour. Notes:
So Kevin Clay and Connor Peirson as Price and Cunningham - unsurprisingly, both very good, as this is hardly their first stint in those roles. But I’d never seen either of them live before, so that was exciting (UPDATE: someone correctly pointed out that Clay has left and it was actually Robert Colvin. I read the wrong cast list. I’m dumb)
Colvin reminded me a lot of Robert Manion, who I now realise I really, really want to see as Price (I’ve said before that I want Lauren Lopez to play McKinley in the style of Draco Malfoy, can you imagine? Throw in AJ Holmes as Cunningham since he’s done it before, maybe Tiffany Williams as Naba, and Corey Dorris as Mafala, and you’ve got my nerdy dreamcast)
I like that Colvin makes the role his own (some Prices reeeally try to be Andrew Rannells, which I don’t like - I want to see how YOU do it!)
I’ve noticed there are, broadly, two ways the role of Price can be approached, and different Prices will fall somewhere on a spectrum between them. Price has two defining characteristics - he’s very naive, and he’s very arrogant. Actors generally choose one of the two to emphasise. The first is more common, having Price be a very sincere character - he’s definitely self centred, but above anything else he does mean well. He seriously believes in everything he’s doing, and is genuinely crushed and beaten down over the course of the story, only to regain his optimism at the end in a new, more mature form. With this approach, Price’s character arc is primarily about him learning to be more realistic. The other approach is to focus on his arrogance and minimise the naivete. This Price is fully aware that his situation is shitty, and he’s not happy about it. His optimism is a front so people won’t realise how annoyed he is, and it’s desperation to find something that proves that he’s as incredible as he thinks he is that drags him into misery after misery. He is self interested above all else, and it’s only when he learns to care about and listen to other people that he gets to be happy. This Price’s arc is primarily about him learning that he’s not actually the greatest human alive, and that other people matter too
I’ve seen both versions of Price, and others that fall somewhere between (Rannells is probably the most middle ground, unsurprisingly, as he’s the originator). Colvin leans on the naive side, but with just enough immature whining and self-aggrandising that he’s not quite at the extreme (of the Prices I’ve personally seen, the naive extreme is Adam Bailey. The arrogant extreme is Stephen Rolley)
Side note, is it not SO COOL that the same character, with the same script, can have a totally different journey based nothing more than subtle changes to line delivery, facial expressions and general demeanour? I love theatre
Little things - he greeted his dad in Spooky Mormon Hell Dream, his All American Prophet was fantastic, and he tried to make the General dance with him
Connor Peirson is excellent at physical comedy. Cunningham is another role where the actors sometimes try to be the originator, and again this was thankfully not done
His final name for Naba was ‘Nigel Farage’, which is pretty standard for UK productions, but it always kills, and tonight was no exception
His Cunningham was a little more low key and sassy than I’ve seen others do, which was interesting
Tom Xander is probably still my favourite Cunningham, mostly because he’s the only one who’s ever managed to act like a convincing 19 year old in my eyes - but that’s just personal preference, Peirson is still very, very good
I LOVED this Nabulungi, played by Nicole-Lily Baisden. She’s far more mature than I’ve ever seen a Naba before, and I honestly really like it. It made the character feel a bit deeper
Her Sal Tlay Ka Siti was much less idealistic and much more desperate than most are, and she was generally pretty serious up until Baptise Me - which makes that song so much sweeter, because we’re getting to see her softer side
Baptise Me was an audience favourite tonight (though I noticed that they got the water on her dress in the wrong place, oops)
Naba being more serious also makes the Hasa Diga Eebowai reprise that much sadder
She wore a different outfit in Hasa Diga Eebowai than she does in the West End? A pink dress as opposed to a shirt and shorts. I like the West End outfit better
Also, the build up to that song was amusing for me because it was very obvious who in the audience had seen the show before based on when they started laughing at the title phrase
McKinley! I was super excited for this because of the main cast, he’s the only one I’d only ever seen one actor portray (live) (don’t misunderstand, I love Stevie Webb a lot, but it’s fun to see other people’s takes as well). And... I love William Hawksworth a lot too
Not sure if Colvin is tall or Hawksworth is short, but there was a full head’s worth of height difference between them
Also he was not wearing a blue tie, what the hell, how else am I supposed to pick him out when I’m too poor to afford seats where I can properly see their faces
McKinley is yet another character who came across as more serious than usual in this production. He felt older than Webb’s McKinley, and was less sassy and bitchy. But he was also, it should be noted, much, much more camp
Hawksworth’s Moroni, though? Sassy little shit
His delivery of the ‘I have it nightly’ line is my favourite I’ve ever heard. He says it very matter-of-factly, like he doesn’t even realise how messed up it is. Some try to play it up as sad, which I don’t think is in character, he should either do this, or show some awareness that it’s bad, but be trying to brush it off. His whole thing is denial, after all
McPriceley watch: He was very forward with Price, taking every opportunity to get in his personal space, especially on ‘was I in it’. He was visibly grumpy about ‘oh no, I’m not having gay thoughts’. Almost kiss had him notice that Price had put his hand on his arm, and then it was like his brain lagged, he didn’t even try to lean into it until Price had already walked away. Not my favourite take on it, but not bad. Also a little Hell Dream flirting
But, oddly enough, he kind of seemed to have a little thing going with Elder Michaels, of all people (McMichaels?)
And also (and I loved this) the moment Cunningham started doing his prophet thing, he started flirting with Cunningham instead of Price. It was honestly really cute. But like, what a little-
Both he and Price were hit in the face by streamers during Joseph Smith American Moses (where he seemed more irritated by what was happening than anything else). Also, the Mission President was visibly into that song (at first), which I haven’t personally seen done before
He hammed it up a lot in the Hell Dream, blowing kisses and everything
In more general stuff, this particular theatre is designed in such a way that the lighting in You and Me (But Mostly Me) looked better than I’ve ever seen it, go just for that
My audience really loved both Joseph Smith American Moses and Hasa Diga Eebowai. It’s always interesting seeing shows in different places, because different jokes tend to land better depending on where you are. This trip has backed up my previous experiences with going to shows in Birmingham, which is that everyone in this city has a sick sense of humour. It’s great
But they also tend to react really strongly to emotional stuff, lots of awwing Naba and Cunningham. They also really liked the dancing in Two By Two
There was an audible ‘oh NO’ from somewhere in the audience when Naba announced the play. There was also an audible ‘his SUITCASE’ in reference to McKinley at the end (the suitcase was also different from what I’ve seen before, it’s pink on a black background)
There were some mistakes in Spooky Mormon Hell Dream - Price missed his final line, and McKinley’s jacket came undone at the back. He tried to fix it several times to no avail. He probably would have preferred me not have been watching him the whole time, but I like seeing how actors deal with that sort of thing, so sorry, William Hawksworth, but I saw it all. Sincere well done for keeping it professional as you desperately tried to subtly reach around your own back
Ran into an actual Mormon outside who tried to recruit me
So overall, if you’re still here after all that - this is a really, really good production! Go see it if you live in the Birmingham area!
Final note - Webb always dabs when the curtain falls. Always. I kept my eyes on Hawksworth. He disco dances. I don’t know who I hate more

Theatre Highlights 2019
My Top 11 Theatre Highlights and Moments of 2019 (in no particular order other than roughly chronological.)
Let's get stuck in!
Panto at the Palladium
So my first theatre trip of the year saw me head off to Panto land at the Palladium to see Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. It was great to see Danielle Hope on stage again and she was the perfect Snow White. Massive shoutout to Simeon Dyer who was ace as one of the Dwarfs in the show, it’s not everyday you get to see your pal on stage in their West End Debut, he did a brilliant job. The Palladium always delivers fantastic Pantos and I’m excited to see what their next one is!
Book Of Mormon
So Book Of Mormon was again one of those shows I wasn’t rushing to see, that is until Luke George went into the company. I had heard a lot of things about it and I was worried as I had been told if you get easily offended that I wouldn’t like it. I saw it and loved it. It was nuts and very tongue in cheek humour. Turn It Off is one of my favourite numbers in the show, the company are fantastic in it! Tom Xander as Elder Cunningham is pure magic. No other way I can describe his performance. He’s so cheeky and mischievous, the PERFECT Cunningham. Paired with Dom Simpson as Elder Price they are a dream team. You and Me (but mostly me) is such a joy to watch. It was also so lovely to watch Luke and see him on stage again. He is as brilliant as ever!! The Book of Mormon is playing at the Prince of Wales Theatre in London’s West End and it’s also on tour too!!!
Cursed Child - Year Three
I think I said this in last years post but Cursed Child combines two of my biggest loves Harry Potter and Theatre. The Year Three company were exceptional and I saw a huge array of covers. Martin Johnson, Danny Dalton, April Hughes, Jordan Bamford, Leah Haile and Susan Lawson Reynolds. I can remember all the shows when I got to see them and the little details of their performances. Also as #KeepTheSecrets is over I’m gonna talk about April as Delphi. I ADORE April as Delphi. Like hands down my favourite interpretation of the role. Delphi is so sweet and then BAMN. That switch is flicked and her true intentions come out but even then April brought such a warmth to her that I found myself really sympathising with Delphi. She’s just a very misunderstood character and I just wanted to give her a hug. On the other side April’s interpretation of Myrtle is ICONIC!!! That giggle she does in the moment after Scorpius ask if everything’s going to be okay? And Albus replies going of course it is. Pure brilliance!! Also I have to mention the fact I FINALLY got to see James McGregor as Draco. It happened gang. I don’t know how I managed to get to see him three times, still blows my mind as I was worried I wouldn’t get to see him once but I did. It actually happened. ‘Twas beyond brilliant in every sense of the word and well worth the wait, exceptional performances!
Shitfaced Shakespeare
Another fantastic season for those boozey Bard loving beans! The Taming of the Shrew and Hamlet in London and Midsummer Nights Dream on tour. It’s always a joy to see them perform on stage. For those of you who read last years Highlights I can confirm that I broke the curse. I got to see Saul Marron Compère THREE times!!! He also was the drinker for the show of Midsummer I saw in my hometown on the tour. It was lovely to revisit my first show I saw them do, plenty of laughs and so much fun! Bring on next season for more Shakespeare, laughs and most importantly - booze! 😜 haha
Venice Preserved/The Provoked Wife
Now my theatre highlights wouldn’t be complete without me seeing a show Natalie Dew was in. This year I got to see her in Venice Preserved and The Provoked Wife both at the RSC in Shakespeare land (Stratford Upon Avon). Both shows were absolutely fantastic and I gotta mention Sarah Twombly who really stood out in The Provoked Wife as Mademoiselle, stunning performance! I adored Venice Preserved so much I saw it twice! It was gritty, edgy and the whole production value was fantastic! It was also so good to see Nat in such a different role, it’s not everyday you get to see your stagey fav play a dominatrix. She was so badass, strong and the moment at the end of the play with the look the gave another character, I’m getting chills just thinking about it. Perfection!
Edinburgh Fringe
Each year my trip to Ed Fringe just gets better and better and this year was no different. I managed two trips this year and saw a whole host of different shows which were all incredible and I got meet some lovely people, both leafleting and chatting to a few of the actors before the show. I’ll leave a link to my Ed Fringe post so if anyone wants to check out what I saw give it a read - here. Massive shoutout to the Bodily Functions gang as they were super lovely, Friendsical cast, David Colvin was so lovely too, the Shitfaced Shakespeare and Showtime lot. I could go on. But I’m buzzing to see what Ed Fringe 2020 will bring!
The Indian Queen
When in France, go to the Opera? So this still links with theatre but I want to talk about Pierrefonds, it’s my blog so I can do what I want 😜. Firstly BIG shoutout to my friend Sej, the only person mad enough to agree to go to France with me to visit a castle and to see an Opera. So firstly Pierrefonds. I still can’t believe I got to visit the castle where they filmed Merlin. It’s been on my Bucket list for many years now so thrilled I finally got to tick it off. It’s a gorgeous place in the cutest little village ever, genuinely would move there if there was more theatre. 100% will be going back again and would recommend to anyone about going. I had a great time! The other part of my trip saw me go and watch my very first Opera, The Indian Queen! The Opera House in Lille is stunning, so so beautiful. Now I can’t comment on what happened at the beginning as I was raging at the subtitles being in French, it wasn’t until it was 10/15 minutes in that I realised it was all sung and spoken in English. (yep. I am that dumb and yes it took me that long 🙈) I loved how they had the screens move around in the background with the opera on. It had been prefilmed and all the actors were in costume whereas the actors were all in blacks performing it in front of the screens live. As a first venture into the world of Opera, wasn’t what I was expecting at all but I really loved it. It was also so great to see James McGregor on stage again too!! He’s very good!!
Fiddler On The Roof
Wow. Just wow. I was completely blown away by Fiddler On The Roof, the set was gorgeous and how the company went through the auditorium felt so natural. You really felt like you were in Anatevka and part of the community. The whole company were phenomenal!! Andy Nyman as Tevye delivered one of the best performances I have ever seen from any West End Lead. His vocals and comic timing were on point!!! Maria Friedman as Golde played really well opposite Andy’s Tevye, they are a formidable duo. I’m so happy I was able to see them on together. Molly Osbourne as Tzietel and Joshua Gannon as Motel really stood out, stunning performances. Hands down the best show I saw this year without a doubt and I wish I could go back in time and relive it!!
Mary Poppins
Now Mary Poppins is so very dear to me. The movie is an absolute classic, a timeless piece but I had never seen it live on stage before. I had my tickets booked since January when they went on sale and it did not disappoint when I finally got to see it in November. Charlie Stemp was a brilliantly charming Bert and Zizi Strallen was, excuse the pun, ‘Practically Perfect in every way’ as Mary. I sobbed my way through the show and when Zizi flew up over the audience at the end of the show I was in bits. The best way I can describe it is when you love something so much and your just full of nostalgia and emotion and that’s how it came out. Step In Time, Feed The Birds And Practically Perfect were all highlights for me. I have so much love for the whole company for delivering a phenomenal show and I can’t WAIT to return to Cherry Tree Lane once again next year. Although hopefully I will be able to get through the show without crying next time. Haha. Mary Poppins is currently playing at The Prince Edward Theatre in London’s West End.
Dear Evan Hansen
Now I had to be the only person in theatreland who wasn’t rushing to get tickets or proper hyped for it. It was one of those shows for me which I was like - I’ll see it eventually but I’ll let the rush of people pass and I’ll go when it’s all died down. Then the cast got announced and I was okay. I need to see it and I need to see it in previews as I need to see Rupert Young on stage again. Thankfully one of my best friends Johanna was desperate to see it when she was over in November and she managed to sort us tickets. (Thanks Chummy. You’re the best. Love you) It generally was such a phenomenal experience, the audience was so quiet and the only sounds you could hear were the quiet sniffs of people crying. You could hear a pin drop and I don’t believe I will ever experience anything like that ever again. That’s great Anne but why has it made it into your highlights? Don’t worry. I’m getting to that gang 😜 haha. The whole cast were phenomenal. Sam Tutty was flawless as Evan, I connected immediately with him. I was sold and invested from the beginning. The fact there is only 8 people on stage for the whole show blows my mind. Like WHAT?! Outstanding performances from all. In particular Mr Rupert Young as Larry. Now the only thing I knew about the show was that You Will Be Found closes the first act. That’s all I knew, didn’t read up on it or listen to the soundtrack before hand. I went in completely blind! Now You Will Be Found starts and I can hear people crying and I’m sat there thinking. This is great. I haven’t cried at this. Brilliant. The thing which broke me and had me sobbing was when Rupert Young broke down and cried during You Will Be Found. That is what got me and I can relate so much to it. How I view it is that Larry has delayed grief and that happened to me personally so it really struck a chord with me. I’m basically a convert and this is a piece of theatre everyone needs to see and I can see it running for a very long time in London. Dear Evan Hansen is playing at the Noel Coward Theatre in London’s West End and if you haven’t already, GO BUY A TICKET!!
Rage But Hope
I was very lucky to be able to catch this show at Ed Fringe this year so I was thrilled I was able to make it in to see it again during its London run in November. I stand by everything I said before and it was fantastic to see the development of the piece, which is a current and important issue we all should focus on. The whole company delivers stunning performances and I adored the addition of Matt’s characters monologue. I felt it tied together what he said in a conversation with James earlier in the piece and it gave much more depth to his character. The Layla’s List monologue remained one of my favourite moments in the play and goes to show the importance younger generations have and that they are far wiser than their years suggest so not to under estimate them. Let’s preserve this world for many more generations to come. The writing is stunning and hats off to Stephanie Martin for an incredibly well written play. The scene at the end of the play was new for the London run and I felt it really hammered home the message. Tell the truth. Act Now!
So that pretty much wraps up 2019’s Theatre and what a year it was.
2020 - a New Year, a New Decade and I can confirm a lot more Theatre adventures.
Thanks for reading, make sure to come back next year for my 8th Theatre Highlights (that is MAD!!) to find out what I got up to!
Until next time, cheerio!

i hate josh gad
i am fully convinced that the reason no one gives a flying fuck about arnold in the bom fandom is because of josh gad. most people watch the obc bootleg right??
i cannot explain in words how much i HATE HIM. i’m sorry. there is not a single good bootleg with a good arnold actor on any website ever. ben platt does not play arnold in the way that arnold is meant to be played and JOSH GAD MAKES ME WANT TO RIP MY EARS OFF.
watching the obc bootleg and seeing him miss his cues and doing that fucking laugh and reducing his character to loud = funny fills me with such unfathomable rage. and while the original broadway show before the changes has LOADS more pricingham shit (their little song together when they make up, andrew rannells being really touchy for some reason, all of it really) i genuinely am not even mad as to why some people don’t see it because the thought of josh gad as cunningham makes me feel ill.
fans of bom who have only seen bootlegs on youtube i will personally buy you a plane ticket to the uk so you can come and see one of tom xanders shows before he leaves because then you will actually be able to see that cunningham is a good character anyway i think i’m fucking crazy
