TOP 22 TWO-FACE STORIES OF ALL TIME
22.) “Second Chance,” from Batman: The Animated Series (1994)
More about Batman’s devotion to Harvey than Harvey himself, this episode of BTAS is a great look at their friendship, how love can blind someone to another’s flaws, and trying to save someone from themselves.

TOP 22 TWO-FACE STORIES OF ALL TIME
1.) “Eye of the Beholder,” (1990) from Batman Annual #14
The definitive modern Two-Face origin, and still the best Harvey story to date. It’s been both imitated and ignored, but never matched. Deserves to be hailed as an iconic classic of Batman stories alongside Batman: Year One.

12.) “Two Split Seconds on Division Street” from Batman: The Audio Adventures Special (2021)
A (Tues)day in the life of Two-Face, his bickering struggles with himself, his numerical obsession, and his ultimate longing for either salvation or destruction. One of the only truly great takes on his obsession with twos. A tie-in to the incredible HBO podcast.

TOP 22 TWO-FACE STORIES OF ALL TIME
8.) Batman 89 (2021-2022)
Billy Dee Williams’ Harvey finally gets his due with one of the most innovative, complex, and relevant takes on Two-Face ever written. Whole theses could be written on how this Harvey explores concepts like classism, racism, moral philosophy, and even quantum physics. A densely packed story with an ambitious split climax that can’t sufficiently be posted here.

11.) “Lucky Day,” (1998) from Batman: Gotham Adventures #2
Harvey crashes a game show where his abusive father is set to win a fortune. This issue presents the true origin of Two-Face in the DCAU, one that puts its own unique spin on the abuse backstory of the comics. A satisfying tale where everyone gets what’s coming to them.

17.) “Never an Option!” (1999) from Batman: Gotham Adventures #12
More unstable than ever, Two-Face becomes a reckless vigilante with the ultimate goal of destroying himself. Despite having previously given up on Harvey, Batman must try to save his old friend’s life, even if he can’t save his sanity. Sequel to the TV episode “Judgment Day,” the finale of The New Batman Adventures.

18.) “Fifty-Fifty,” (1997) from Batman & Robin Adventures #22
Kidnapped by mobsters and armed with only a quarter, Harvey has to hack his own mental illness to defy his captors and protect his estranged ex- fiancée, Grace Lamont. A great follow-up to the feel-bad events of Dini’s “Two Timer” from B&RA #1-2. One of the best looks at Harvey’s lawful neutrality.

3.) Batman, the syndicated newspaper comic strips (1989-1991)
A lost gem with a flawed, conflicted Harvey which remains the longest sustained complete arc of the character to date, culminating in a stunning finale you’d never see in the comics. Desperately needs to be collected in print, but until then, you can read the whole thing at my sideblog, The Daily Batman.

19.) Batman vs Two-Face (2017)
An inventive and satisfying retro Batman ‘66 adventure that balances goofy camp with charming earnestness, rooted in top-tier performances by Adam West and William Shatner. Far superior to its comic counterpart, and one of the best animated Harveys ever.

5.) Batman/Two-Face: Crime and Punishment (1995)
With Harvey helpless as his dark side rampages across Gotham, Batman has to go to the source of Harvey’s pain, the man who truly created Two-Face: his father. A powerful tale of abuse, trauma, and closure (or dealing with the lack thereof) as only JM DeMatteis could tell.

9.) “The Beautiful Ugly,” (2013) from Legends of the Dark Knight vol.2 #56-58 (digital exclusive), published in Legends of the Dark Knight 100-Page Super Spectacular #3 (2014)
Harvey puts a murderer on trial and lets the victim’s loved ones carry out their brutal judgment. Several Two-Face stories have kangaroo court scenes and themes about Harvey bringing out the worst in people, but few have utilized the trope so effectively. A bleak gem of a story, with a haunting finale.

16.) “Face to Face to Face to Face” (1987), from Teen Titans Spotlight #13
Harvey puts Cyborg through a brutal psychological gauntlet to prove that anyone can become a monster. The first comics work by J. Michael Straczynski, this is Batman: The Killing Joke one year before Moore’s story was published.

TOP 22 TWO-FACE STORIES OF ALL TIME
6.) Batman The Animated Series: Dual to the Death, by Geary Gravel
This YA novelization combines (and improves) the BTAS episodes Two-Face Part I & II and Shadow of the Bat Part I & 2, adding new scenes that connect both plot lines and flesh out both Harvey Dent and Grace Lamont. As excellent as the two-part Two-Face origin was on TV, this book narrowly improves on those episodes in every way, even despite the simplistic prose. As a full story about the fall of Harvey Dent and the rise of Two-Face and Batgirl alike, this would have made for an incredible full-length animated movie. Hell, it still would.
Huge thanks to @mirrorfalls for scanning the whole book!

14.) (Tie) “Two Down” from The Batman Chronicles #16 (1999) and “Just One More Thing...” (2015) from Convergence: The Question #1-2
The first and final (to date) stories of Harvey’s strange, tense, touching, and fraught sorta-friendship with Renee Montoya, best represented in this two mirroring tales by Greg Rucka told sixteen years apart. Theirs is one of DC’s most fascinating and underrated dynamics, recently recounted to powerful effect by Renee herself in John Ridley’s The Other History of the DC Universe, also strongly recommended. Here is how Ridley recontextualized the events of these two issues from Renee’s POV:

21.) “Deface the Face” (2018) from Detective Comics  #988-993
Two-Face has an existential crisis when his good side commits murder, and he rejoins old allies Batman and Jim Gordon to fight Kobra terrorists. Stylish art accompanies an odd, fun story that shows how Bruce and Harvey actually enjoy their battles, no matter what side they're on.

2.) The Harvey Kent Trilogy from Detective Comics #66, 68, and 80 (1942-43)
Even after eight decades, the original Two-Face saga is still the gold standard by which all Harvey stories SHOULD be defined. Written by Bill Finger at the top of his game, this Two-Face is more complex and interesting here than in most stories that followed, packed with character potential that’s gone unrealized to this very day. Absolutely required reading that stands the test of time.
