"Solitaires are slim, long-tailed thrushes that perch upright in trees. As the name suggests, they are usually seen alone. Feeding mostly on berries in winter, each bird maintains its solitary status by defending a winter territory, staking out a supply of berries in a juniper grove or similar spot. These wintering birds often give a soft bell-like callnote; in summer (and sometimes in winter as well) they give voice to a complex song of clear musical warblings."

townsend’s solitaire is a small member of the thrush family found primarily in mountainous forests throughout western parts of north & central america. during the summer, they feed largely on insects, but during the winter, their diet becomes primarily juniper babies - one study suggested a single townsend’s solitaire could consume 42,000-84,000 berries in one winter. during the winter, both males and females become very territorial and defend patches of juniper trees fiercely. males and females have no distinguishing plumage, and both adults are primarily gray, with white eye rings.

yesterday I got my first 'rare' bird sighting (as declared by ebird) which is neat

#it was already a lifer for me but I didnt know it was rare until I went to submit my list #then i looked at the map of sightings so now I can say I got the first townsends solitaire in my city lol #text #i wish i took pics of it now lol #i took a pic of an egret on the mountain bc i thot that might be declared rare bc its a weird spot for an egret #i might try to stop by after work sometime this week in case its still there #birdwatching

2024 TBR

It's the last day of December, and I am still stuck in bed with the flu. Twelve days of lying in bed feeling terrible. The only upside of my bed-bound misery is updating my reading spreadsheet. I bought quite a few books in 2023 and haven't had the time to update my spreadsheet. 

Because of this update I realized that i have 33 unread books on my shelf. That is a lot of books. Leaving these books unread on my shelf forever would be a waste of space, so I have set a goal for myself. Read all the unread books on my bookshelf.

There are 52 weeks in a year. If I were to read one book a week, I would reach my reading goal with ease. To motivate me to read these books I am setting one simple rule: no more buying books until the unread books have been read. Basically just a book-buying-ban.
