did you used to enjoy jack antonoff’s production too? and do you still like any of his past work? i love his work on 1989 and reputation (as well as melodrama), and i didn’t mind it on lover or folklore/evermore, but it’s driving me fucking insane on this album.
I really really did. I think my favorite examples of his production are actually on (early) bleachers albums themselves where it ranges from anxious and muted to soaring and cathartic really appropriately since those albums deal with the theme of 'hope in times of hopelessness'. NFR, Melodrama, folklore, parts of 1989 and Emotion are also chefs kiss but even listening across those albums there's definitely common threads tht would threaten to unravel into each other if each of those albums weren't so good everyone's just looks past it.
and as much as I don't mind a producer having a signature sound (it's expected ofc) the more he extends his reach, the fewer sides of his own 'mirrorball' he has to show, like at this point we're just listening to the same song remixed over 12 artists. it esp shows on his mellow tracks - what felt relaxed on bleachers albums he just can't translate to other artists, it's all so sparse, hollow and repetitive now. n I love him still but hate that that lifeless mind-numbing pulsing sound haunts almost every mainstream pop release of the last year or so (the most frustrating for me being clairo's sling and ofc midnights which is borderline desolate).
I truly wonder what's gnna happen what with the 80s-revival sound growing staler and starting to be shouldered out of mainstream. Let's hope he evolves!
(also to each their own but I really REALLY didn't like him on reputation. personally personally personally I think if Taylor wanted to make a brooding biting bright trap-pop inspired album she should've gone to a trap-pop producer because jack's production style is not indulgent or bold enough to achieve that. which leaves that whole album sounding sooo cheap to me. I just wish she would work with new people who suit her vision (Imogen Heap on clean you will always be famous)).

because it’s a good album!! that’s why it’s doing so well
I would b more willing to accept this if quality was ever the sole determinant of commercial success! we all know it takes a careful combination of either strategic drip-feed anticipation or shock factor hype, mainstream appeal, and some level of genuine consistent quality to hit those numbers! and let's be honest she hit 1.5 out of 3 of those criteria at maximum
