#unreliable narrator battle

UNRELIABLE NARRATORS; FINALS.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Eugenides Propaganda:
the entire plot hinges on a detail he lets the reader (and every other character) assume is true. I don't want to spoil it because it's a really fun reveal but he is lying from the first second he appears on the page and you can't trust him to tell the full truth about ANYTHING related to himself and his goals. he mostly does it to keep his advantage and not have other characters be suspicious of him but it's just so fun when you realise he's been lying the whole time
Lemony Snicket Propaganda:
(I would like to preface this by saying that Lemony Snicket is the author's pen name, not a real person, and he exists as a character in-universe as well as being the one in-universe who writes the books!) I'd say he's unreliable because he spent time collecting information about the Baudelaire kids and then... wrote books about it. He has no idea what any of their dialogue actually was, what they were thinking, or even the whole plot, he's just doing research into the incidents and then filling in the gaps to make it a story. What ACTUALLY happened to the Baudelaires? Nobody really knows for sure
While the Baudelaire siblings are in potentially life threatening danger, he will randomly start talking about his own life and just leave the siblings hanging. For example, once Count Olaf was threatening to kill Violet, and then Lemony randomly began talking about how he met the love of his life at a costume party. This man CANNOT stay on topic. Usually when a new character is introduced, Lemony tells us right at the start that they’re either going to die or that the Baudelaire siblings will never see them again. Foreshadowing is not subtle in these books. CONSTANTLY emphasizes how miserable he feels while writing these books. At one point he admits that he had to put his pencil down and go cry for a while because of how sad it made him. Once he filled an entire page with nothing but the word “ever” to emphasize how dangerous it is to put forks in electrical outlets. He also repeated a paragraph about deja vu later on in the book to give the reader deja vu.

HDJFJF nooo the ‘congratulations!’ comic (x) isn’t the part two to the ‘mawwige’ comic (x), it’s a fun little contrast piece tho
You could say it’s more of a prequel… (:

i caught up on jjk. favorite panels in the last few chapters, plus:
Tumblr media
thematic catharsis coming around
#jjk manga#jjk spoilers#jjk manga spoilers#jjk#jujutsu kaisen#i really think fushiguro is more of a parallel to geto than he is to gojo#geto saved gojo first but gojo failed to save geto#fushiguro saved itadori first and itadori's going to save fushiguro#it's also propping up my theory that gojo is an unreliable narrator#and most important things he's said in the series are going to be proven wrong#1. love it the most twisted curse of all#it's actually the key#2. you can't save someone who isn't prepared to be saved#you can and he will#those are my thoughts#i don't think the manga has gotten as bad as people are saying it has#but it does have issues#and the style change and quality dip in the illustration is bugging me#and don't think characters being introduced and dying quickly is that bad either#the ones that matter are written well and their deaths are significant and well integrated#the main issues cropping up now are also the issues that have existed for much much longer than post-shibuya#villains motivations make no sense#random battles that don't have thematic significance abrupt the pacing in an annoying way#the magic system isn't always well integrated narratively and thematically#gege has too many ideas and not all of them needed to make it past editing#but a lot of problems are just typical shonen problems that jjk seemed above when the story was a little tighter#also i don't think the magic system is as smart and complicated as people are pretending it is#i don't think it will be hard to adapt in the anime#i think the weaknesses in pacing and the increase in exposition are going to be more exposed in the anime though#and more people will catch on to the basic rules of the magic system being inconsistent or underdeveloped

oh ohhhhhhh ohhh wait. wait a fucking minute. listen. listen!!!!
flayed!billy and neil having an run-in a few days before The End. flayed!billy not scaring as easily, actually not scaring at all, compared to actual real!billy. turning right back on neil. except the mindflayer has a soft spot for his host becos the mindflayers fucked like that, so instead of just killing neil, the mindflayer decides to play with it's food for a bit.
real!billy doing his Thing and managing to get that one tear out. becos his dad may be a piece of shit but surely, surely, out of everyone, he would be able to figure out something's wrong. that billy's not billy. the desperation and the hope that maybe this is it, maybe this is only option, maybe making him just that little bit stronger. maybe him getting a 'dad, help, please' with a few more tears out before the mindflayer takes over again. but neil's a fucking coward at most and a piss poor excuse of a father at best, so he takes one look at billy crying, begging, and shakes off any doubt's and worry's, and treats him like he always does when billy turns to water under his weight.
he makes his voice harder, his grip tighter. his words crystal fucking clear.
and then flayed!billy is shoving him off, stronger than neil's ever felt him, and he's laughing, but not in a way neil's ever heard him laugh. and then he's turning to walk right out the door, camaro keys in hand, even though neil just grounded him for the entire fourth of july weekend, except he turns around just before he makes it outside, face completely blank and familiar, but neil's never seen this person before in his life, and says 'when billy and i have finished what we started, i'll come back for you.' and then he's gone.
and neil picks himself up from where he was crumpled against the kitchen counter, shakes himself off, and denies everything that just happened in the past 15 minutes. grips the bench to stop his hands from shaking, and promises himself that next time he sees billy, then he'll really let him have it. that just because billy thinks he's old enough to throw his own weight around, doesn't mean he's gonna get away with it under this roof.
except billy never comes home, and then it's the fourth of july, and neil and susan are trying to enjoy a nice dinner at home, a dinner that both their children were meant to be home for but aren't, but at least him and susan are having a lovely night. they enjoy it right up until the phone rings late that night, and then they're speeding to starcourt mall, and there's smoke and flashing lights and fucking military everywhere, and max is distraught, hugging susan like she's the only family she has left, and no one will tell him anything about billy except for a brief 'billy didn't make it, we're sorry for your loss.'
they won't let him identify the body. won't even release the body to be buried. won't tell him why all those people were in the mall after opening hours, what max and her friends were doing there. what started the fire. why there was fucking military clearing the scene. won't even give him a cause of death.
and every single time he closes his eyes, he hears 'when billy and i have finished what we started, i'll come back for you.'
he starts hearing it when his eyes are open, too, when he's trying to put together the funeral. when he tries to go back to normal life, back to his job, where his boss pulls him aside and gives him time off until his current family situation can stop effecting his work, back home, where there's no longer loud music shaking the doors, no car flooring it up the street, no fourth place set at the table for dinner, no shitty attitude and lousy excuses and brave backtalk.
everything's suddenly so fucking quiet.
so he fixes it. overcorrects. takes his sleepless nights and his workless days out on susan, is loud and brash and a constant immovable object. makes sure it's never quiet again. susan kicks him to the curb within a month, threatening police involvement if he doesn't leave quickly and quietly.
so, he leaves.
(then, susan and max leave for the trailer park, becos neil Left. and that's all susan will say on the matter. and then the upside down comes back with a new big bad, and max is right back in the thick of things in a way she never was before, but then suddenly billy's back. billy's alive, and he's back, and he's pulling himself with his bare fucking hands out of the upside fucking down before reaching around and helping her pull herself out and he's covered in blood and black goo and scars and injuries for days and, honestly, she probably doesn't look much better, but he's coughing and bleeding yet his heart's still fucking beating. and they somehow fucking found and saved each other.
and max is sitting by his bedside in hospital after every single surgery, and she keeps him company and puts headphones over his ears to listen to music and picks out the comic books that she knows he likes to read and she does her best to just never mention anything home related.
billy makes it a week after being back from the dead before he asks about neil.
'he left,' she says, because that's all that matters.
and billy fucking remembers. he remembers how hard he fought, how it took everything within him to overpower the mindflayer, even for those brief few seconds. how the only thing on his mind was this is it. this is my only chance. this is all i've got. and he remembers neil's eyes, wide, scared, fearful, but the second billy broke through, the moment billy shed a tear, fucking begged for help, his voice cracking over the word 'dad', neil went from speechless to loud. his eyes going from uncertain to cold. how the one time billy remembers asking his dad for help, probably the first time he's asked his dad for help since he was a kid, neil didn't even take even a moment to think about it. just took one look at him begging and crying, and steamrolled right over him, fucking sentenced him to death. all because he asked for fucking help.
billy closes his eyes and nods, doesn't think he could ever face neil again without falling apart for good.)

“  i’m not used to letting people close. i don’t like being vulnerable— but i want to, with you. i want to let you in.  ” reabeau <:3c
idk which one but always accepting <:3c // @gottgenug
She wants to cry. Wants to kiss him and bury him in blankets and food and comfort until he's forgotten anything else could ever exist.
She thinks how unfair, that someone as kind and good as Beau has had to deal with such things. People may only be as solid as memories and yesterdays, but even if he could never stay the same as they were back in school, he at least deserved better.
"I know."
Still, she smiles, squeezing his hands so tight her own ache. Kisses their backs, and then his palms, and loosely tucks them against her cheeks; pulls away her own to cup his face in her gloved hands, fingertips raking against his scalp. Kisses him, feather-light, before peppering more to either cheek, the corner of his eyes, before finally pressing one firm and warm to his forehead.
Pulls away, rests her forehead against his, smiling wider despite the tears she allows to leak into her eyes. Kisses him, again.
"I know," she repeats, nuzzling into him, dragging in a heavy breath past the pain in her heart.
"It's okay. I'm here. I'm here, and you can take all the time you need, okay? I'm not going anywhere."
Tumblr media
I'm sorry, is all the back of her mind can scream, raging with hypocrisy. Thinks of basements and blood and Bulga, recuperating alone. Always, always alone—
Always dancing and pulling and distracting him from how she hasn't let him in, not really. How all he knows is facsimiles of better days and the cracks that they all share, now, rather than any that are uniquely hers.
Thinks of the gloves between her touch and his face and how, even now, even with this and all her platitudes, she's not really giving him what he wants. What he's asking for.
What he's all but begging for, despite how she's cried and ached and screamed for all these years to not be alone. All these years, all this love, and...
You deserve better.

Crackish Theory
but not really but maybe? Let me work through my thoughts and then you help me decide how serious I am.
I had a Shower Thought today about this ask.
Tumblr media
"Never quite as good as he likes to maintain." Neil has also said that Crowley is an unreliable narrator when it comes to his Fall, and we know from the show that his story keeps changing. He sauntered vaguely downwards, he did a million light year freestyle, he only asked questions but he also rode into battle during the War. Hm.
My initial thought was that his memory had been fucked with, and he genuinely doesn't know. And this could still be true, probably is true, but I was scrubbing conditioner of of my eyes this afternoon and just started to wonder if Crowley actually did something Bad to get the boot?
I don't think I've ever seen anyone suggest this before, which is INTERESTING. We've collectively agreed that he's just a sad wet cat who would never hurt anyone, but my niblings in Christ, he turned a bunch of paintball guns into real rifles bc he thought it was funny. (I'm convinced that the only reason he made sure nobody died was the Look Aziraphale gave him.) Muh point izzz, what if he committed an act of sabotage in the course of investigating or poking around or building a suggestion box or whatever he did to get answers that pissed off the Metatron?
Or maybe he was a spy. Remember his Bond fixation? Maybe he worked undercover for Lucifer bc he was promised answers that the Almighty wasn't giving up. Once you let go of the idea that he's just a wee soft boi who only asked questions with big sad Puss in Boots eyes, the possibilities are endless.
As are the fic ideas. I think I've got enough material here to keep me entertained until filming starts, at least.

Sadly, Gen didn't win the Unreliable Narrator poll. In fairness, he had a steep battle against Lemony Snicket, who I imagine is more broadly familiar to readers (something something conflating quirkily convoluted storytelling with intentional unreliability something something WHATEVER). Also, it's always been Gen's strategy to never show his full hand (HA), so maybe he prefers not winning, to keep folks underestimating him.
Anyway, I was reminded I've had this piece sitting in my folder for a while, so here are two absolutely reliable narrators who are frequently rendered unreliable by their proximity to Gen. Sophos would hardcore get a tattoo after marrying Helen, and she would add one to match--it's a pinecone and an olive branch!
